Abstract
Our objective was to study the effects of procyanidin on the cell death of human hormone-resistant prostate carcinoma cell line PC-3 and its mechanism. PC-3 cells were treated with procyanidin of different concentrations. The cell apoptosis rates were detected by annexin V-FITC and propidium iodide double staining followed by flow cytometry (FCM) analysis. Mitochondrial membrane potential (Deltapsim) was analyzed by FCM with rhodamine 123 staining. After 24 hours of treatment with 300 microg/mL procyanidin, the apoptosis rate of PC-3 cells was 44.86%, and Deltapsim was significantly decreased by 87.30%. With the extending of procyanidin treatment, the apoptosis rate decreased whereas the necrosis rate increased. Procyanidin could induce apoptosis and necrosis in PC-3 cells, which might be related to down-regulation of Deltapsim.

Abstract
To date, there has been little or no research related to process control of subsurface remediation systems. In this study, a framework to develop an integrated process control system for improving remediation efficiencies and reducing operating costs was proposed based on physical and numerical models, stepwise cluster analysis, non-linear optimization and artificial neural networks. Process control for enhanced in-situ bioremediation was accomplished through incorporating the developed forecasters and optimizers with methods of genetic algorithm and neural networks modeling. Application of the proposed approach to a bioremediation process in a pilot-scale system indicated that it was effective in dynamic optimization and real-time process control of the sophisticated bioremediation systems.

Abstract
By performing an experiment on stimulated emission by two photons in the parametric amplification process and comparing it to a three-photon interference scheme, we present evidence in support of the idea that the underlying physics of stimulated emission is simply the constructive interference due to photon indistinguishability. So the observed signal enhancement upon the input of photons can be interpreted as a result of multiphoton interference of the input photons and the otherwise spontaneously emitted photon from the amplifier.

Abstract
Two experiments of four-photon interference are performed with two pairs of photons from parametric downconversion with the help of asymmetric beam splitters. The first experiment is a generalization of the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference effect to two pairs of photons while the second one utilizes this effect to demonstrate a four-photon de Broglie wavelength of lambda/4 by projection measurement.

Abstract
Groundwater contamination due to releases of petroleum products is a major environmental concern in many urban districts and industrial zones. Over the past years, a few studies were undertaken to address in situ bioremediation processes coupled with contaminant transport in two- or three-dimensional domains. However, they were concentrated on natural attenuation processes for petroleum contaminants or enhanced in situ bioremediation processes in laboratory columns. In this study, an integrated numerical and physical modeling system is developed for simulating an enhanced in situ biodegradation (EISB) process coupled with three-dimensional multiphase multicomponent flow and transport simulation in a multi-dimensional pilot-scale physical model. The designed pilot-scale physical model is effective in tackling natural attenuation and EISB processes for site remediation. The simulation results demonstrate that the developed system is effective in modeling the EISB process, and can thus be used for investigating the effects of various uncertainties.

Abstract
An experiment is performed to demonstrate the temporal distinguishability of a four-photon state and a six-photon state, both from parametric down-conversion. The experiment is based on a multiphoton interference scheme in a recently discovered projection measurement of a maximally entangled N-photon state. By measuring the visibility of the interference dip, we can distinguish the various scenarios in the temporal distribution of the pairs and, thus, quantitatively determine the degree of temporal distinguishability of a multiphoton state.

Abstract
Stable aerobic granules were successfully developed in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with glucose and sodium acetate as the main carbon sources, and then they were acclimatized to polish the effluent from an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. It was found that more than 95% chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 85% suspended solids (SS) in the UASB effluent could be removed by an aerobic granular SBR as a post treatment unit. The performance of the SBR was stable over the whole experimental period. At an organic loading rate (OLR) of 4.5 to 5.4 g l(-1) d(-1), the acclimatized aerobic granules had an average diameter of 3.5 to 6.0 mm and a minimal settling velocity of 72 m h(-1). The biomass concentration in the SBR was as high as 8.4 g (dry weight) l(-1). This study showed for the first time that aerobic granular sludge in SBR would be an effective means to polish the effluent from UASB reactor.

Abstract
Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) is an important complement-activating protein of the human immune system. As a result of one of three structural gene mutations in exon 1 (variants B, C and D) and/or the presence of a low-efficiency promoter polymorphism, MBL deficiency may be associated with increased susceptibility to infectious diseases and to autoimmune disorders, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Using a combined approach of heteroduplex generator and polymerase chain reaction, a systematic search for mutations in exon 1 and the promoter region of the MBL gene was performed in a Chinese study population comprising 41 SLE patients and 111 healthy controls. Two alleles, a wild-type allele A and a variant allele B (a previously reported mutation of GGC to GAC at codon 54), were identified in MBL exon 1. The frequency of the B allele (0.15) was higher in the SLE patients than in the healthy controls (0.09), but the difference did not attain statistical significance (P > 0.05). However, for two polymorphisms at positions -550 and -221 in the promoter region, the frequency of the low-MBL-producing haplotype (LX) in the patients (0.2073) was significantly higher than that in the controls (0.0855) (P = 0.003, relative risk = 2.79). Our results suggest that the LX haplotype represents a strong risk factor among Chinese SLE patients. Although of lesser importance, the MBL B allele also may be a risk component in the developing process of SLE in Chinese patients.

Abstract
This paper introduces a violation analysis approach for the planning of regional solid waste management systems under uncertainty, based on an interval-parameter fuzzy integer programming (IPFIP) model. In this approach, several given levels of tolerable violation for system constraints are permitted. This is realized through a relaxation of the critical constraints using violation variables, such that the model's decision space can be expanded. Thus, solutions from the violation analysis will not necessarily satisfy all of the model's original constraints. Application of the developed methodology to the planning of a waste management system indicates that reasonable solutions can be generated through this approach. Considerable information regarding decisions of facility expansion and waste flow allocation within the waste management system were generated. The modeling results help to generate a number of decision alternatives under various system conditions, allowing for more in-depth analyses of tradeoffs between environmental and economic objectives as well as those between system optimality and reliability.

Abstract
Capnography provides a substitute for monitoring of arterial carbon dioxide tension (PCO(2)). We performed a prospective study to evaluate a new application of capnography, using quantitative curve analysis in the pediatric ICU. Twenty-five infants and children admitted to the pediatric ICU after cardiovascular surgery for congenital heart diseases were included in the study. Capnographic curves were recorded during 3 phases of mechanical and spontaneous ventilation: phase 1, immediate postoperative period; phase 3, preextubation period; and phase 2, period between phases 1 and 3. Each recording included 17 sec of capnographic tracings from consecutive spontaneous and/or ventilator-driven breaths. Quantitative curve analysis was made to define parameters including peak value of exhaled PCO(2) (P), mean rate of rise of PCO(2) (R), and area under each capnographic curve (A). Qualitative inspection of the wave contour showed no obvious difference in phase 3 during spontaneous and mechanically assisted ventilator breaths. However, an obvious difference existed between spontaneous and mechanically assisted breaths in phase 2. For each parameter (P, R, and A), there was a significant difference in phases 2 and 3 from spontaneous breaths. However, there was no significant difference in phases 2 and 3 from ventilator-assisted breaths. We further calculated the ratio of parameters of spontaneous breaths (S) and ventilator-assisted breaths (V) in phase 2 and phase 3. The ratio of S/V for P, R, and A showed significant differences between phase 2 and phase 3. We conclude that quantitative analysis of exhaled end-tidal PCO(2) curves revealed significant changes of specific parameters during the transition from the ventilator-dependent state to the spontaneously breathing ventilator-independent state. This new approach provides a new way to estimate respiratory status in infants and children receiving ventilator therapy. Through quantitative capnographic curve analysis, if P, R, and A from spontaneous breaths approached those of ventilator-assisted breaths, patients have resumed reasonable pulmonary mechanics, and extubation may then be considered.

Abstract
Thiodiglycolic acid (TdGA) is the major metabolite of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) detected in human urine. Although urinary TdGA has been reported to be associated with ambient VCM exposure, the relationship between urinary TdGA and a low level of air VCM is not clear. Questionnaires were administered to 16 polyvinyl chloride manufacturing workers to obtain a detailed history of occupation and lifestyle. For each worker, personal air monitoring for VCM was performed and a time-weighted average for VCM exposure was calculated. The urinary TdGA levels at the end of a work shift, and at the commencement of the next shift, were also assessed for each worker. Urine analysis revealed that TdGA levels at the beginning of the next shift were higher than those at the end of that shift. Workers experiencing a VCM exposure greater than 5 ppm in air revealed a urinary TdGA level significantly greater than those experiencing a VCM exposure of less than 5 ppm (P < 0.05). The best fit of regression for urinary TdGA on air VCM was Y = 1.06 + 0.57X for urine collected at the commencement of the following work shift, where X is the air VCM concentration and Y is the urinary TdGA concentration (r2 = 0.65, P < 0.01). We conclude that the urinary TdGA level is best detected at the commencement of the next shift and that it can be used as an exposure marker for polyvinyl chloride workers when the air VCM level to which they are exposed is greater than 5 ppm.

Abstract
A dual-probe microdialysis technique was developed for the simultaneous monitoring of glucose and related metabolite levels during testicular ischemia in rats. The determinations of lactate and pyruvate were achieved by liquid chromatography within 5 min. Glucose was determined by a microdialysis analyzer. A unilateral ligation was produced by occlusion of the right artery for 2 or 4 h in anesthetized rats. Microdialysis probes were inserted in both sides of the testis to simultaneously monitor glucose, lactate and pyruvate during basal, ischemia and reperfusion periods. Dynamic and comparative changes in these analytes in ipsilateral and contralateral testes were demonstrated. The present technique can be used as a tool for exploring energy related metabolites and their relationships in testicular ischemia.

Abstract
PURPOSE The accurate diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is essential to prevent its complications and to initiate appropriate treatment. Doppler ultrasound (DUS), contrast venography, and intravenous radionuclide venography have been used for many years to detect DVT. However, obtaining venous access in the foot for injection of contrast agent can be difficult. METHODS The authors introduce the technique of subcutaneous radionuclide venography using Tc-99m in vivo tagged red blood cells and compare it with DUS, a widely used method. Sixty patients (120 lower extremities) underwent subcutaneous radionuclide venography and DUS. RESULTS The concordance rate was 94% in the femoral veins and 95% in the popliteal veins. Subcutaneous radionuclide venography revealed 10 iliac vein thromboses and 2 inferior vena cava thromboses that were not detected by DUS. CONCLUSIONS Subcutaneous radionuclide venography is a useful alternative method for detecting DVT. It is particularly valuable for evaluating DVT in the iliac veins and in the inferior vena cava.

Abstract
Inhaled steroids play a very important role in the prevention and treatment of asthma. Previous studies indicated that fluticasone propionate (FP) had low bioavailability and high local potency. However, the laboratory data in these studies were not obtained among Taiwan population. It is very important that native data should be established. Thus a 12-week research program was designed, involving 77 patients, 51 for FP group and 26 for beclomethasone dipropionate (BD) group. The objects were victims of moderate to severe asthma and their age ranged from 4 to 14 years old. An open, comparative and randomized method was adopted. Except for the 4-week-later daytime symptom score(P = 0.033, BD group was better), no other significant differences were found between the two groups in the symptom score improvement(P > 0.05). All the P-values for the daytime & night-time scores were lower than 0.001, which means obvious improvement after treatment in both groups. P-value for PEF improvement was 0.003 after 4 weeks (BD group was better) and 0.943 after 8 weeks; for FEV1 improvement, it was 0.005 after 4 weeks(BD group was better) and 0.252 after 8 weeks; and for FEV1/FVC improvements, it was 0.067 after 4 weeks and 0.097 after 8 weeks. There was no statistic significance in total eosinophil count (TEC), IgE, eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) serum level changes after 4 or 8 weeks. Adverse effects were all anticipated and no statistic significance showed up, either, between the two groups or in the cortisol levels (P > 0.05). In conclusion, native data indicated that the potency of 100 micrograms of FP was equal to that of 200 micrograms of BD and that few side effects were noted in FP group. It is recommended that this drug be introduced for clinical use.

Abstract
PURPOSE Helicobacter pylori is the principal cause of chronic gastritis and is strongly associated with peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer, as well as with gastric lymphoma (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue [MALT] type). H. pylori could be recovered by many kinds of media, however, it could not be detected efficiently. This study was trying to ameliorate the isolation and detection rate with selective and non-selective media. METHODS First, type strain (ATCC 43504) was cultured with twelve different kinds of sheep blood agar based on brain heart infusion medium for five days. Then five better non-selective media and five selective media were chosen for the biopsy, which were incubated at 37 degrees C in a microaerophilic incubator for five days. Endoscopic biopsies were collected from 623 patients at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital. RESULTS It was found that non-selective media, which contain 5% modified chocolate agar (the ratio of fresh and heated sheep blood is 2) with 1% Isovitalex, had the best detection rate (91.1 +/- 0.6)%. Furthermore, 5% modified chocolate agar with 1% Isovitalex and 1% antibiotics would increase the detection rate to (97.1 +/- 0.3)%. CONCLUSIONS According to Ansorg's method, the best detection rate (98.4 +/- 0.7)% could be obtained with two-section petri dishes which had 5% modified chocolate agar with antibiotics and the other without antibiotics.

Abstract
The general objective for this paper is to reveal the dynamic relationships between the rapid economic development, water pollution and the subsequent waste-load allocation in different economic sectors through a case-study in Shenzhen City, South China. Two-objective analysis model was employed based on the input-output table for Shenzhen with the full consideration of various constraints in local area. The improved Tchebycheff procedure was used for obtaining the solutions. The predictions were made on economic development and pollutants from wastewater in different sectors and different planning years. The present study allows for the consideration of the economic structural adjustment. It is found that the current situation of economic structure is generally good and is subject to further adjustment in Shenzhen, although it has undergone the rapid development in the past 18 years. When the maximum Gross Domestic Production and the minimum Chemical Oxygen Demand are chosen as the two objectives subject to other constraints, the harmonized results indicated a scheme that claims substantial reduction of polluting effluences in Shenzhen while closely keeping the economic growth rate as planned.

Abstract
Coagulase negative staphylococci are the commonest blood culture isolate from infants on neonatal intensive care units. The differentiation of contaminants from isolates representing true infection remains a significant clinical problem. Data from two neonatal intensive care units were collected prospectively in order to find those parameters, which best correlated with actual sepsis. Each case was assessed using clinical parameters to categorise infants into infection and contaminant groups. Logistic regression was then performed to find significant correlates. Three correlates were found, namely the presence of a long line (P = 0.001), abnormal white cell count (P = 0.037) and abnormal white cell morphology (P = 0.027). Abnormal white cell morphology was assessed by two experienced hematologists. More than half the isolates were probable contaminants and true infection may occur in the absence of a long line in this patient group.

Abstract
Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EG) is a rare allergy-related disease, especially in early childhood. We present the case of a 1 year 4 month old boy with congenital duodenal obstruction who developed EG. That diagnosis of EG was made by a series of imaging studies and was confirmed by upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopic biopsy studies which showed significant tissue eosinophilia in both mucosal and submucosal layers. No evidence of parasite segment or ova was found in the stool and biopsy specimen. Specific IgE antibodies to milk were estimated to be 2 + (CAP system). Cow's milk allergy was highly suspected but not confirmed by consecutive elimination and challenge tests since the child was too much suffered to be tested. There was partial response to the 2-week treatment with Alfare (semi-elemental formula) and oral prednisolone 1 mg/kg/day. One month after initial examination, perforation of the stomach occurred and exploratory laparotomy disclosed stenosis of the duodenum. Congenital duodenal obstruction was diagnosed based on operative findings and previous sonographic findings. There has been only one report of EG in an infant with congenital duodenal obstruction. The nature of the relationships among cow's milk allergy as a possible etiologic factor, congenital duodenal obstruction as an predisposing factor and EG involvement at both mucosal and submucosal layers remains unclear.

Abstract
Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare inherited disorder caused by defects in the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase complex of phagocytic leukocytes. The leukocytes of the CGD patients cannot produce adequate amount of superoxide and other oxygen metabolites which are toxic to microorganisms. As a result, the phagocytes fail to kill the ingested microorganisms, especially those with catalase activity. Typically, CGD patients suffer from recurrent pyogenic infections starting from the first year of life. We report a young boy who had experienced recurrent perianal abscess, osteomyelitis and bacterial enterocolitis. Flow cytometric analysis revealed defects in the neutrophil respiratory burst pathway and defined the carrier state of his mother and younger sister. He received antimicrobial prophylaxis at our out-patient clinics and remained well at present. We try to make clinical physician keep in mind the diagnosis of CGD by presenting this typical case. In the meantime, we review the recent literature regarding the advances in diagnosis and management of CGD.

Abstract
Extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) refers to the production of blood cells outside the bone marrow and is a compensatory mechanism for bone marrow dysfunction. A 34 year-old female patient with beta thalassemia major was found to have multiple large, well-circumscribed radiopaque paravertibral mass lesions in chest radiography. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thorax disclosed a right upper apical and two lower thoracic paraspinal mass lesions with heterogeneous isointensity on T1-weighted images and hypointensity on T2-weighted images. Because intrathoracic EMH is suspected in our case, which had obvious bone marrow dysfunction, radionuclide bone marrow scintigraphy is helpful in supporting the diagnosis. Tc99m sulfur colloid scintigraphy demonstrated three intense radioactive thoracic paraspinal mass lesions corresponding to the lesions seen on MRI. We believe whole body bone marrow scintigraphy with Tc99m sulfur colloid is the best convenient noninvasive method for supporting the diagnosis of EMH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES We aimed to determine the following in an experimental acute pain model in sheep: (1) whether multimodal analgesia with intravenous fentanyl and ketorolac was more effective than fentanyl alone; (2) whether secondary hyperalgesia (central sensitization) occurred in adjacent (foreleg) dermatomes after thoracic surgery; (3) whether ketorolac used preemptively influenced the development of secondary hyperalgesia after surgery. METHODS Changes in primary nociception were measured by increases to tolerated pressure, applied to the foreleg by a blunt pin, before foreleg withdrawal occurred. Changes to breath-to-breath interval and estimated end-tidal CO2 were used as indices of respiratory effects. Study 1 (n = 6) compared the paired responses to acute nociception after ketorolac (90 mg) or saline (control) pretreatment, followed by fentanyl (graded, 0 mg to 1.5 mg). Study 2 (n = 6) used a cross-over of ketorolac (90 mg) or saline (control) 24 hours and 1 hour, respectively, before a standardized thoracotomy incision, followed by antinociceptive testing with ketorolac (90 mg) and fentanyl (0.6 mg) daily over 4 days. RESULTS In study 1, fentanyl produced naloxone-antagonizable antinociception and respiratory depression. Ketorolac did not affect fentanyl antinociception, except for prolonging antinociception at the highest dose; it did not affect the respiratory effects. In study 2, preemptive ketorolac had no effect on the postoperative antinociceptive or respiratory effects of fentanyl. The pharmacokinetics of fentanyl were unaltered by ketorolac. CONCLUSIONS The results obtained in this acute pain model found no significant evidence of a fentanyl-ketorolac interaction, of central sensitization as shown by secondary hyperalgesia, or of a preemptive analgesic effect.

Abstract
Thallium-201 myocardial perfusion imaging is wildly used to detect and assess the extent of jeopardized myocardial ischemia in the coronary artery disease and the viability of myocardium post infarction. In recent years, there has been a great deal of pharmacological development of blockers and openers of potassium channel. In this study, we will discuss the interference of uptake of thallium-201 ion in cultured neonatal rat myocytes with existence of a variety of pharmacological agents. The cultures of neonatal rat myocardial cells were incubated with different agents such as potassium chloride, sodium-potassium ATPase pump inhibitor (ouabain), cesium compound, variable potassium channel blockers (4 AP, TEA and glibenclamide) and their openers (minoxidil, and cromakalim). The radioactivity of intracellular thallium-201 that could enter rat myocardial cells was detected by gamma counter sixty minutes after thallium-201 was added. In this study we found that thallium and potassium ions behave in an analogous manner in cultured rat myocardial cells. Both 2.5 mM and 5 mM concentration of extracellular potassium ion significantly result in reduction of thallium-201 ion influx in rat myocardial cells. 0.5 mM ouabain, an inhibitor of sodium-potassium ATPase pump, reduced about 40% of influx of thallium-201 ion in cultured rat myocardial cells via active transport. Combination of both potassium ion and ouabain inhibit most of thallium-201 ions influx in myocardial cells, but it is not completely inhibited. Cesium, a potassium antagonist, also interferes with the uptake of thallium-201 in cultured rat myocytes in our study. The most interesting finding in our investigation is that potassium channel blockers such as TEA and glibenclamide, inhibit the influx of thallium-201 in myocytes. However, potassium channel openers have no overt effect on influx of thallium-201 in cultured rat myocytes. We indirectly observe about 60% of influx of thallium-201 ion into cultured rat myocardial cells via active sodium-potassium ATPase pump. Potassium, cesium and potassium channel blockers, such as TEA and glibenclamide, inhibited the different percentage of influx of thallium-201 in cultured rat myocardial cells in this study.

Abstract
We examined the effect of parathyroid hormone and various signaling molecules on collagen synthesis and chloramphenicol acetyltransferase activity in cultured transgenic mouse calvariae carrying fusion genes of the rat Col1a1 promoter and the chloramphenicol acetyltransferase reporter. After 48 h of culture, parathyroid hormone, forskolin, dibutyryl cAMP, 8-bromo cAMP, and phorbol myristate acetate inhibited transgene activity, while the calcium ionophore ionomycin had no effect. Pretreatment of calvariae with the phosphodiesterase inhibitor isobutylmethylxanthine potentiated the inhibitory effect of 1 nM parathyroid hormone on transgene activity and collagen synthesis. Parathyroid hormone further inhibited transgene activity and collagen synthesis in the presence of phorbol myristate acetate. Parathyroid hormone inhibition of transgene activity and collagen synthesis was not affected by indomethacin or interleukin-6. After 48 h of culture, parathyroid hormone inhibited chloramphenicol acetyltransferase activity by 50-85% in cultured calvariae carrying transgenes having progressive 5' upstream deletions of promoter DNA down to -1683 bp. These data show that the inhibitory effect of parathyroid hormone on Col1a1 expression in mouse calvariae is mediated mainly by the cAMP signaling pathway. Prostaglandins and IL-6 are not local mediators of the parathyroid hormone response in this model. Finally, regions of the Col1a1 promoter downstream of -1683 bp are sufficient for parathyroid hormone inhibition of the Col1a1 promoter.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE:To define the infection types of 80 cases of ora-maxillofacial infection and investigate its anaerobes' distribution and the role of the anaerobes' metabolic products in their identification.METHODS:We isolated and cultured anaerobes from the purulent specimen and applied the gasliquid chromatograph (GLC) technique to analyze the anaerobes' metabolic products to define their genera and species in the meantime.RESULTS:Bacteria were isolated from all of the purulent specimen.Isolation rate of bacteria was 100.00% and isolation rate of anaerobes, which distributed in 8 genera,29 species, was 95.00%. The higher detectable rate of them were respectively peptostreptococcus, petococcus, bacteroides, fusobacterium, verillonella, eubacterium. The rate of mixed infection was 80.00%. The proportion ratio of aerobes and anaerobes was 1:1.08.CONCLUSION:Oral-maxillofacial infection mostly belongs to endogenous mixed infection in which anaerobes are preponderant bacteria. GLC technique is a effective, sensitive, selective and specific method for defining anaerobes' genera and species through analyzing their metabolic products. It is a promising and recommendable rapid anaerobes' identification method comparatively at present.

Abstract
The relationship between apoptosis of neutrophils and the change of their intracellular free Ca2+ concentration [Ca2+]i was studied. FMLP and A23187 were used to elevate the [Ca2+]i while BAPTA was used to deplete it. Fluorescence microscope, flow cytometry and gel electrophoresis were used to study the percentage of cell apoptosis and the change of f-actin during apoptosis. The results showed that the apoptosis was obviously inhibited by fMLP and A23187, while accelerated by BAPTA. The detection of f-actin showed that the f-actin depolymerized obviously during apoptosis. The elevation of [Ca2+]i inhibit the actin depolymerization while depletion of [Ca2+]i accelerated it. This result indicated that the apoptosis of neutrophil was obviously inhibited by [Ca2+]i elevation but accelerated by [Ca2+]i depletion.

Abstract
The mitochondrial DNAs (mtDNAs) from 30 pig breeds (29 Chinese native breeds and 1 European breed) and wild boars were investigated for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) to determine the phylogenetic relationships and genetic diversity among pig breeds and wild boars. Of the 24 enzymes used, 8 (AvaI, BclI, BglII, EcoRI, EcoRV, ScaI, StuI, and XbaI) detected polymorphisms. By combining the cleavage patterns for each enzyme, 108 individuals were sorted into eight mtDNA mitotypes. There are two haplotype lineages in domestic pigs, i.e., Chinese and European lineages. The pairwise nucleotide sequence divergence was calculated to be 0.56% between Chinese pigs and European pigs, suggesting that they might have diverged from a common ancestor approximately 280,000 years ago. The wild boars showed more extensive genetic variation, four mitotypes were detected in six wild boars. In addition, one of the Zhejiang wild boars was found to share the same mitotype with Chinese native pigs. A UPGMA tree based on genetic distance among mitotypes indicated that mtDNAs of Chinese pigs and European pigs are clearly divided into two clusters, and Chinese wild boars are more closely related to the Chinese pigs. Our results provide molecular evidence to support the previous hypothesis that pigs may be derived from two maternal origins, Asian and European wild boars. Chinese native pig breeds may have a single origin.

Abstract
Tc-D,D- and TC-L,L-HMPAO were synthesized. The stability of Tc-D,D- and TC-L,L-HMPAO in vitro is similar to that of d,l-isomers by the spectrophotometric and three strips methods. Cerebral uptake (%D in brain) for the L,L-isomer is higer than the D,D- and d,l-isomer in rats. Delayed studies shows that T-L,L-HMPAO reveals less washout and reflects a higher cerebral deposition properties than the D,D- and d,l-isomer.

Abstract
A 14-year-old boy gradually developed several subcutaneous masses over bilateral peri-auricular regions, neck, and both upper arms near the elbows over the past 2 years. The recent development of eyelid puffiness elicited his seeking medical attention. Hypereosinophilic syndrome was first considered due to the markedly elevated blood eosinophil count without other evidence of allergy or parasite infestation, but the absence of organ involvement made this diagnosis questionable. The histopathological investigation of the subcutaneous mass in the upper arm showed lymph node-like tissue with markedly reactive follicular hyperplasia and eosinophilic abscesses associated with granulomatous inflammation, thus leading to the final diagnosis of Kimura's disease. Oral prednisolone was prescribed successfully. This illness occurs mainly in young oriental males. We report this case to introduce it to pediatric clinicians as an important differential diagnostic entity in eosinophilia-associated diseases and reactive lymphadenopathy.

Abstract
AIM To study the relationship between Ureaplasma urealyticum (UU) infection and apoptosis of human spermatogenic cells. METHODS Spermatogenic cells were observed under light microscope with Wright-Giemsa staining and by means of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate (dUTP)-biotin nick-end labeling (TUNEL) technique. RESULTS Apoptotic rate of UU-infected males (15.5% +/- 6.8%) was significantly higher than that of controls (5.2% +/- 2.3%). CONCLUSION Apoptosis of spermatogenic cells can be caused by UU infection, which provides further evidence for UU-induced male infertility.

Abstract
The Truquant BR radioimmunoassay (RIA) using monoclonal antibody BR 27.29 to recognize a peptide sequence on the MUC-1 gene product for quantification of the CA 27.29 antigen in serum was used in this report to evaluate in 145 patients with breast cancer and compared the other conventional serum markers such as CA15-3 and CEA. The upper limit of normal (25 u/ml) was determined from CA27.29 values 12.4 +/- 4.1 u/ml (mean +/- 3 S.D.) for 112 female subjects apparently free of disease. The CA15-3 levels above 25 u/ml and CEA levels above 5 ng/ml were considered positive values. Thirty-seven cases of 145 patients studied had elevated CA 27.29 levels (sensitivity: 25.5%), 35 of 145 had positive CA15-3 levels (sensitivity 24.1%) and 27 of 145 patients had positive CEA levels (sensitivity: 18.6%) (p < 0.05). One hundred and ten cases of the breast cancer patients (75.8%) did not have metastatic disease. In this group CA 27.29 sensitivity was 6.4%, while CA15-3 sensitivity was 5.5% and CEA sensitivity was 4.5% (p > 0.05). Mean values were 10.2 +/- 9.2 u/ml for CA 27.29, 14.1 +/- 5.6 u/ml for CA 15-3 and 1.7 +/- 1.5 ng/ml for CEA. Thirty-five patients (24.2%) had metastatic disease. In this group CA 27.29 sensitivity was 85.7%, CA15-3 sensitivity was 82.8% and CEA sensitivity was 62.8% (p < 0.05). Mean values for CA27.29 was 152.6 +/- 131.6 u/ml, CA15-3 was 123.1 +/- 107.6 u/ml and 21.8 +/- 36.9 ng/ml of CEA. With regard to the correlation of three tumor markers with clinical stages, patients had significantly higher levels of CA27.29 than CEA, but they were similar to CA 15-3 in metastatic breast cancer. These results suggest CA27.29 to be more sensitive and specific than CEA, but that it is similar to CA15-3 for metastatic breast cancer detection and monitoring.

Abstract
Better understanding of the immunological mechanisms implying the insemination and the infertility of some men and women is needed and crucial to the development of an effective immunocontraceptive method. To provide good protection against conception or infection, and avoid any possible and unexpected complications which immunocontraceptive "vaccine" may arise of, it seems the right time for scientists to create a virtually new thinking for this extremely urgent and important issue. This conceptual article describes our original thoughts of the future development of immunocontraceptives, preferably, based on immunoglobulins rather than vaccines, against human sperm specific antigens and seminal plasma immunosuppressive factors. Its general correctness, advantages and feasibility for fertility regulation and prevention of infection are discussed.

Abstract
AIM To study the anti-spermatogenic mechanism of supra-physiological doses of testosterone undecanoate (TU). METHODS Twenty fertile adult men received four intramuscular injections of TU at monthly intervals, 1000 mg upon admission and 500 mg for the subsequent injections. The apoptotic germ cells in the semen were studied under light microscope with terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) and Wright-Giemsa staining methods. RESULTS After treatment, the sperm density and the number of spermatogenic cells in the semen were significantly decreased (P < 0.01), while the apoptotic ratios of spermatocytes and spermatids increased significantly (P < 0.01) as compared with the pretreatment levels. Apoptosis was found to be augmented in the whole series of castoff spermatogenic cells. CONCLUSION Besides its suppressive effect on spermatogenesis through a negative feed-back mechanism, TU enhances apoptosis of spermatogenic cells, which may be an additional mechanism of its anti-spermatogenic activity.

Abstract
The myocardial kinetics of meperidine and the relationship between these kinetics and the effect of meperidine on myocardial contractility (maximum positive rate of change of left ventricular pressure) were examined by analysis of previously published data collected in sheep after the i.v. injection of 100 mg of meperidine over 1 s. There was significant hysteresis between reductions in myocardial contractility and the arterial concentrations of meperidine, but not the coronary sinus blood (effluent from the heart) or calculated myocardial concentrations. The peak reduction in contractility occurred after the peak arterial concentration, at the time of the peak myocardial concentration, but before the peak coronary sinus concentration, suggesting that the site of drug action in the heart was not in equilibrium with either arterial blood or effluent blood from the heart. The most appropriate form of a dynamic model (a linear model with a threshold) was determined, without the need to assume a kinetic model, by directly fitting the observed reductions in myocardial contractility to the calculated myocardial concentrations. To determine the optimal kinetic and combined kinetic-dynamic models, a variety of one-, two-, and three-compartment models of the myocardium were fitted to the coronary sinus concentrations by using hybrid modeling. These included "tank in series" models that accounted well for drug dispersion and "peripheral compartment" models that accounted well for deep distribution. The most appropriate model was a "compilation" model, which incorporated features of both these extremes and was a better fit to the observed data than either a traditional single flow-limited compartment or a traditional membrane-limited model.

Abstract
Experiments are described in which a fatigue index is determined for the latissimus dorsi muscle of sheep in situ, using capacitive strain gauges. Parallel experiments for invasive and non-invasive measurements are conducted, measuring global contraction and relaxation rates and shortening duration for paced muscle. The results show that, above one pulse per burst (5 V, 100 microseconds pulsewidth), contraction rates (62 +/- 11 mm s-1) and relaxation rates (50 +/- 7 mm s-1) are constant for unloaded muscle. For one animal, fatigue testing with a 2.5 kg load at six pulses per burst shows shortening rates increasing to a maximum (80 mm s-1) after 30 s and reducing to 5 mm s-1 after 150 s. The decrease in shortening amplitude is used as a fatigue index, log displacement against time. Power output is load dependent, measuring 4.7 W kg-1 with a 2.5 kg load. There is good agreement between the invasive and non-invasive measurements, thus providing a method for monitoring changes in muscle parameters non-invasively during future pacing transformation.

Abstract
We examined the effect of parathyroid hormone (PTH) on basic fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) and FGF receptor (FGFR) expression in osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells and in neonatal mouse calvariae. Treatment of MC3T3-E1 cells with PTH(1-34) (10-8M) or forskolin (FSK; 10-5M) transiently increased a 7 kb FGF-2 transcript with a peak at 2 h. The PTH increase in FGF-2 mRNA was maintained in the presence of cycloheximide. PTH also increased FGFR-1 mRNA at 2 h and transiently increased FGFR-2 mRNA at 1 h. FGFR-3 and FGFR-4 mRNA transcripts were not detected in MC3T3-E1 cells. In cells transiently transfected with an 1800-bp FGF-2 promoter-luciferase reporter, PTH and FSK increased luciferase activity at 2 h and 4 h. Immunohistochemistry showed that PTH and FSK increased FGF-2 protein labeling in the nuclei of MC3T3-E1 cells. PTH also increased FGF-2 mRNA, and FGFR-1 and FGFR-2 mRNA levels within 30 minutes in neonatal mouse calvarial organ cultures. We conclude that PTH and cAMP stimulate FGF-2 mRNA abundance in part through a transcriptional mechanism. PTH also regulated FGFR gene expression. We hypothesize that some effects of PTH on bone remodeling may be mediated by regulation of FGF-2 and FGFR expression in osteoblastic cells.

Abstract
The cytokine, interleukin-6 (IL-6), is produced by osteoblasts and may in part mediate parathyroid hormone (PTH)-stimulated bone resorption. The goals of the present study were: (1) to examine PTH induction of IL-6 expression in 7-day-old mouse calvarial organ cultures; (2) to assess the role of intracellular signaling pathways in this model; and (3) to determine whether PTH regulates IL-6 expression by a transcriptional mechanism. Northern blot analysis of calvarial RNA showed that PTH(1-34) at 0.1-100 nmol/L induced IL-6 mRNA at 0.5 h with a peak at 2 h. Forskolin at 10 micromol/L and 8-bromocyclic-AMP at 3 mmol/L also induced IL-6 mRNA with a peak at 2 h. Phorbol myristate acetate induced IL-6 expression, whereas ionomycin and PTH(3-34) amide, an N-terminal-truncated PTH analog that has reduced ability to activate the cAMP-PKA pathway, were much less effective. PMA pretreatment of calvariae greatly blocked IL-6 mRNA induction by a subsequent dose of PMA and decreased induction by PTH and forskolin to a much lesser extent. A reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay was used to measure IL-6 heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA) and mRNA. A 5' primer spanning exons 1 and 2 and a 3' primer complementary to exon 5 of the murine IL-6 gene were used to detect IL-6 mRNA as a 638 bp product. A 5' primer corresponding to intron 4 of the murine IL-6 gene and the 3' primer were used to detect IL-6 hnRNA as a 370 bp product. RT-PCR of total calvarial RNA showed that the induction of IL-6 hnRNA by PTH and other agonists was similar to their induction of IL-6 mRNA. These data support the conclusion that PTH transcriptionally induces IL-6 gene expression in murine calvarial organ cultures mainly through the cAMP-PKA signaling pathway.

Abstract
Two cDNA clones, pIIG1 and pIIG2, corresponding to mRNAs that accumulate in maize root tips subjected to 10 min of physical impedance, were isolated by differential screening of a cDNA library. The deduced proteins, based on DNA sequence analysis, have molecular masses of 13 and 23 kDa for pIIG1 and pIIG2, respectively. pIIG1 showed 97% similarity at the nucleic acid level to a maize root cortical cell delineating protein (pZRP3) and was also similar to some bimodular proteins that are developmentally or stress regulated in other plant species. In situ localization of pIIG1 showed some expression in cortical cells of control maize roots; however, after a 10 min physical impedance treatment, pIIG1 accumulation increased greatly in cortical cells and extended to include the procambial region. pIIG2 did not show sequence similarity with any identified gene of known function, but a bipartite nuclear targeting sequence occurs in its deduced amino acid sequence which indicates it may function in the nucleus. Thus, rapid accumulation of specific mRNAs occurs in maize roots in response to impedance stress, and these mRNAs may be responsible for some responses of the roots to physical impedance.

Abstract
Previous reports have suggested that tachycardia alone can increase the rate of myocardial uptake of some drugs. As part of a systematic study of the determinants of the myocardial uptake and effects of drugs in critical illness, the effect of tachycardia induced by intracardiac pacing on the myocardial disposition and effects of lidocaine, verapamil, and thiopental were studied in chronically instrumented sheep. For each drug, seven sheep received either 100 mg of lidocaine, 10 mg of verapamil, or 750 mg of thiopental over 2 min in unpaced and paced (140 beats/min) states on separate occasions and in random order. Arterial and coronary sinus (effluent from the heart) blood samples were taken at regular intervals for 30 min, and the maximum rate of change of left ventricular pressure (LV dP/dtmax) was measured as an index of myocardial contractility. There were no differences between unpaced and paced studies in the time courses of arterial and coronary sinus concentrations, or the time-courses of myocardial contractility and blood flow, after bolus iv injections of these drugs. Tachycardia alone does not appear to influence the myocardial kinetics or dynamics of lipophilic drugs that can rapidly diffuse into the heart.

Abstract
The 13C-urea breath test (13C-UBT) is a non-invasive method for detecting Helicobacter pylori. This study was performed to determine the cutoff value and evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of 13C-UBT in Taiwan. 13C-Urea (100 mg of 99% 13C-labeled urea) was dissolved in 50 ml sterile water for the test. The test meal for delaying gastric emptying was 100 ml fresh milk. Patients fasted for at least 6h. A baseline breath sample was collected 5 min after they had the test meal. Two other samples were collected at 15 and 30 min after the patients ingested the 13C-urea. The test was evaluated in 352 patients after routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and the urease test, culture, and histopathology were taken as the gold standards for detecting H. pylori. According to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, we chose values of 2.8 and 4.2 excess delta 13CO2 per mil as the cut-off values for 15 and 30 min, respectively, post 13C-urea. The sensitivity and specificity of 13C-UBT were 99% and 93% at 15 min, and 98% and 93% at 30 min post 13C-urea, respectively. The 13C-UBT breath test is an efficient non-invasive method of high sensitivity and high specificity for detecting H. pylori infection. We suggest that the use of fresh milk as the test meal and the detection of excess delta 13CO2 15 min after the ingestion of 13C-urea are suitable for the clinical use of 13C-UBT. This test is simple and rapid.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Commercially available bupivacaine is an equimolar mixture of R(+)- and S(-)-bupivacaine. S(-)-bupivacaine (levobupivacaine) is the subject of current clinical evaluation. We conducted partial cross-over systemic and regional pharmacokinetic studies of i.v. bupivacaine (12.5-200 mg) and levobupivacaine (6.25-200 mg) in ewes. Enantiospecific analysis of blood drug concentration-time data and of regional myocardial and brain drug mass balance data indicated that (a) there was a higher mean total body clearance of R(+)-bupivacaine than of S(-)-bupivacaine (as previously reported); (b) there were no differences in the systemic pharmacokinetics of S(-)-bupivacaine whether administered alone or as a component of bupivacaine; (c) there was no evidence of dose-dependent pharmacokinetics with either enantiomer; (d) for both enantiomers, mean calculated myocardial tissue concentrations of 1%-4% dose occurred between 3 and 5 min. Mean brain concentrations of 0.2%-1% dose occurred between 2 and 4 min after the administration of bupivacaine but between 4 and 5 min after the administration of levobupivacaine. There was no evidence that systemic toxicity induced by these local anesthetics significantly modified their pharmacokinetics, and there was no evidence of an enantiomer-enantiomer pharmacokinetic interaction for bupivacaine. IMPLICATIONS Levobupivacaine comprises 50% of commercially available bupivacaine and is being considered for use in its own right. As a part of its preclinical evaluation, this study considered whether levobupivacaine behaved kinetically in the body in the same way as when administered as a component of bupivacaine.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Commercially available bupivacaine is an equimolar mixture of R(+)- and S(-)-bupivacaine. S(-)-bupivacaine (i.e., levobupivacaine) is currently undergoing preclinical evaluation. Cross-over studies with i.v. levobupivacaine and bupivacaine were conducted in two groups of seven conscious sheep. Doses were chosen to avoid convulsions (smaller dose 6.25-37.5 mg/min) or to be potentially toxic (larger dose 75-200 mg/3 min). In subconvulsive doses, both drugs produced similar time- and dose-dependent depression of left ventricular systolic contractility (dP/dt(max)). Convulsions occurred consistently with > or = 75 mg of bupivacaine and > or = 100 mg of levobupivacaine, producing an abrupt reversal of dP/dt(max) depression. Subconvulsive doses produced minor cardiovascular effects on heart rate and blood pressure, whereas both were increased by convulsions. Cardiac output and myocardial blood flow were decreased with larger doses of both drugs. Doses > 75 mg of bupivacaine or > 100 mg of levobupivacaine induced QRS widening and ventricular arrhythmias, but significantly fewer and less deleterious arrhythmias were induced by levobupivacaine. Three animals died after 150, 150, and 200 mg of bupivacaine from the sudden onset of ventricular fibrillation. These doses of levobupivacaine produced nonfatal arrhythmias that automatically returned to sinus rhythm. We conclude that levobupivacaine could offer a greater margin of clinical safety than bupivacaine. IMPLICATIONS Levobupivacaine comprises 50% of commercially available bupivacaine and is being considered for use in its own right. Local anesthetics can cause toxicity to the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. As a part of a preclinical evaluation of levobupivacaine, this study compared the toxic effects of levobupivacaine and bupivacaine in sheep.

Abstract
The lung, myocardial and systemic kinetics of the enantiomers of verapamil, and their myocardial effects, were measured after administration of 10 mg of racemic verapamil during 2 min to chronically instrumented sheep; the data were used to develop a physiological model of the process. Verapamil was characterized by relatively slow transit through the lungs and heart. The lung kinetic values were membrane limited, whereas the tissue/blood equilibrium half-life for the heart was approximately 8 min. There was little difference between the kinetic values of the enantiomers, with the exception of their extent of deep distribution into the lung. The time course of the increase in myocardial blood flow caused by verapamil was best related to the time course of the arterial verapamil concentrations, whereas the time course of increases in the interval between P and R waves of the electrocardiogram and decreases in the maximum rate of rise of left ventricular pressure were best related to the time course of its myocardial concentrations. Thus, the observed hysteresis for these effects compared with arterial blood was largely caused by the time required for the myocardial equilibration. The model predicted that the myocardial concentrations of verapamil were relatively insensitive to the duration of injection of a given bolus dose, but that rapid injection caused transient, high arterial concentrations. It also predicted that the bolus dose of verapamil should be modified over a 2-fold range to account for physiologically plausible variations in base-line cardiac output and myocardial blood flow.

Abstract
The cardiovascular effects of slow (over two minutes) intravenous infusions of thiopentone 750 mg in conscious instrumented sheep breathing 100% oxygen were examined for 30 minutes following the start of the infusion. The maximum rate of rise of left ventricular pressure (an index of myocardial contractility) decreased significantly from 1 to 10 minutes, to a minimum of 45% of baseline. Heart rate increased by up to 33% above baseline from 0.5 min onwards. Both mean arterial pressure and cardiac output were decreased from between 1 and 7 min. Left ventricular minute work was transiently decreased, but left coronary blood flow and myocardial oxygen consumption showed little or no change from baseline. We conclude that in vivo, thiopentone administered at a relatively slow rate caused large reductions in myocardial contractility, and therefore cardiac reserve, in the absence of significant changes in myocardial blood flow or oxygen consumption.

Abstract
Massive hydrothorax is an infrequent but well-recognized complication of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), and is often regarded as a contraindication to its use. We describe here a patient with massive hydrothorax that appeared during CAPD. Peritoneoscintigraphy was performed to demonstrate the clinical suspicion of a pleuroperitoneal communication and the pleurodesis using tetracycline was commenced and this allowed the successful continuance of CAPD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the histological effect of therapeutic ultrasound on arthritic cartilage of rats with various severities of induced osteoarthritis. METHODS Twenty-seven rats with 3 different stages (Grade I, II, III) of papain induced knee arthritis received 7 min pulse sonication treatment, 3 times/week for 4 weeks. Another 27 rats with the same severity of induced arthritis were studied as controls. The severity of arthritis and related histopathological changes of articular cartilage were evaluated by bone scan and histological findings with hematoxylin and eosin stain. RESULTS "Severity indexes" based on bone scan decreased after sonication treatment in each study group. Histopathological findings indicated marked cartilage repair in the early stage of induced arthritis (Grade I). However, progressive cartilage damage present in untreated Grade II, III induced arthritis was significantly reduced after sonication. CONCLUSION Therapeutic ultrasound enhances cartilage repair in the early stage, and has the effect of arresting further deteriorative damage in the later stage of induced arthritis.

Abstract
Group A streptococcal (GAS) septicemia is rare in occurrence but has a significant morbidity and mortality, whereas retropharyngeal abscess (RPA) is infrequent and it is most commonly found in children under the age of 6 years, with half of the cases occurring in children between 6 and 12 months old. This report concerns a case of GAS septicemia complicated with RPA. The patient, a five-year-old boy, was referred from a local medical department under the impression of meningitis. However, blood and throat cultures were both found to be positive for group A streptococci. Widening of the retropharyngeal space was noted in lateral neck roentgenography. RPA was confirmed by computed tomography (CT) of the neck. Ampicillin was prescribed for a period of four weeks. The patient was then discharged and oral form ampicillin was continued for four more weeks. No surgical incision and drainage was performed. Complete disappearance of the abscesses were noted via CT of the neck at an Outpatient Department follow-up.
