Abstract
Pleural effusions are categorized as transudative or exudative, with transudative effusions usually reflecting the sequala of a systemic etiology and exudative effusions usually resulting from a process localized to the pleura. Common causes of transudative pleural effusions include congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, and renal failure, whereas exudative effusions are typically due to infection, malignancy, or autoimmune disorders. This document summarizes appropriateness guidelines for imaging in four common clinical scenarios in patients with known or suspected pleural effusion or pleural disease. The American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria are evidence-based guidelines for specific clinical conditions that are reviewed annually by a multidisciplinary expert panel. The guideline development and revision process support the systematic analysis of the medical literature from peer reviewed journals. Established methodology principles such as Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation or GRADE are adapted to evaluate the evidence. The RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method User Manual provides the methodology to determine the appropriateness of imaging and treatment procedures for specific clinical scenarios. In those instances where peer reviewed literature is lacking or equivocal, experts may be the primary evidentiary source available to formulate a recommendation.

Abstract
The precise regulation of cellular behaviors within a confined, crowded intracellular environment is highly amenable in diagnostics and therapeutics. While synthetic circuitry system through a concatenated chemical reaction network has rarely been reported to mimic dynamic self-assembly system. Herein, a catalytic self-defined circuit (CSC) for the hierarchically concatenated assembly of DNA domino nanostructures is engineered. By incorporating pre-sealed symmetrical fragments into the preying hairpin reactants, the CSC system allows the hierarchical DNA self-assembly via a microRNA (miRNA)-powered self-sorting catalytic hybridization reaction. With minimal strand complexity, this self-sustainable CSC system streamlined the circuit component and achieved localization-intensified cascaded signal amplification. Profiting from the self-adaptively concatenated hybridization reaction, a reliable and robust method has been achieved for discriminating carcinoma tissues from the corresponding para-carcinoma tissues. The CSC-sustained self-assembly strategy provides a comprehensive and smart toolbox for organizing various hierarchical DNA nanostructures, which may facilitate more insights for clinical diagnosis and therapeutic assessment.

Abstract
This document summarizes the relevant literature for the selection of preprocedural imaging in three clinical scenarios in patients needing endovascular treatment or cardioversion of atrial fibrillation. These clinical scenarios include preprocedural imaging prior to radiofrequency ablation; prior to left atrial appendage occlusion; and prior to cardioversion. The appropriateness of imaging modalities as they apply to each clinical scenario is rated as usually appropriate, may be appropriate, and usually not appropriate to assist the selection of the most appropriate imaging modality in the corresponding clinical scenarios. The American College of Radiology Appropriateness Criteria are evidence-based guidelines for specific clinical conditions that are reviewed annually by a multidisciplinary expert panel. Abstract
Orbital tuberculosis is a manifestation of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis that is challenging to diagnose and treat. Here, we describe the pivotal role of serial imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of orbital tuberculosis. A 28-year-old male presented with recurrent right upper eyelid swelling and a supraduction deficit associated with a firm painless orbital mass, seen on initial computed tomography to be an extensive superomedial lesion producing mass effect. Biopsy revealed a tuberculosis-like granulomatous inflammation, which, coupled with a positive QuantiFERON gold test, led to empiric anti-tuberculin treatment. Serial radiologic imaging following initiation of treatment showed progressive reduction in mass size, supporting the diagnosis and determining the length of treatment. This rare case demonstrates the utility of serial radiologic exams in the diagnosis and treatment of orbital tuberculosis.

Abstract
This review focuses on the initial imaging in the reproductive age adult population with acute pelvic pain, including patients with positive and negative beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) levels with suspected gynecological and nongynecological etiology. For all patients, a combination of transabdominal and transvaginal pelvic ultrasound with Doppler is usually appropriate as an initial imaging study. If nongynecological etiology in patients with negative β-hCG is suspected, then CT of the abdomen and pelvis with or without contrast is also usually appropriate. In patients with positive β-hCG and suspected nongynecological etiology, CT of the abdomen and pelvis with contrast and MRI of the abdomen and pelvis without contrast may be appropriate. In patients with negative β-hCG and suspected gynecological etiology, CT of the abdomen and pelvis with contrast, MRI of pelvis without contrast, or MRI of pelvis with and without contrast may be appropriate. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the accuracy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-synthesised lateral cephalograms (CSLCs) compared with conventional lateral cephalograms for cephalometric analysis in human participants and skull models. METHODS The authors performed a search of PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and Embase databases on 4 October 2021. Included studies met the following criteria: published in English; compared conventional lateral cephalograms and CSLCs; assessed hard- and soft-tissue landmarks; and were performed on human or skull models. Data extraction from eligible studies was performed by two independent reviewers. The quality of evidence was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist tool - diagnostic accuracy studies. RESULTS A total of 20 eligible articles were included in this systematic review. Of these 20 studies, 17 presented with a low risk of bias, while three were found to have a moderate risk of bias. Hard- and soft-tissue analyses were evaluated for each imaging modality. The findings reveal that CSLCs are accurate and comparable to conventional lateral cephalograms for cephalometric analysis and demonstrate good inter-observer reliability. Four studies reported a higher accuracy with CSLCs. CONCLUSION Overall, the diagnostic accuracy and reproducibility of CSLCs were comparable to conventional lateral cephalograms in cephalometric analysis. It is justified that patients who have an existing CBCT scan do not need an additional lateral cephalogram, minimising unnecessary radiation exposure, expenses and time for the patient. Larger voxel sizes and low-dose CBCT protocols can be considered to minimise radiation exposure. REGISTRATION This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021282019).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enlarged pituitary gland volume could be a marker of psychotic disorders. However, previous studies report conflicting results. To better understand the role of the pituitary gland in psychosis, we examined a large transdiagnostic sample of individuals with psychotic disorders. METHODS The study included 751 participants (174 with schizophrenia, 114 with schizoaffective disorder, 167 with psychotic bipolar disorder, and 296 healthy controls) across six sites in the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes consortium. Structural magnetic resonance images were obtained, and pituitary gland volumes were measured using the MAGeT brain algorithm. Linear mixed models examined between-group differences with controls and among patient subgroups based on diagnosis, as well as how pituitary volumes were associated with symptom severity, cognitive function, antipsychotic dose, and illness duration. RESULTS Mean pituitary gland volume did not significantly differ between patients and controls. No significant effect of diagnosis was observed. Larger pituitary gland volume was associated with greater symptom severity (F = 13.61, p = 0.0002), lower cognitive function (F = 4.76, p = 0.03), and higher antipsychotic dose (F = 5.20, p = 0.02). Illness duration was not significantly associated with pituitary gland volume. When all variables were considered, only symptom severity significantly predicted pituitary gland volume (F = 7.54, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS Although pituitary volumes were not increased in psychotic disorders, larger size may be a marker associated with more severe symptoms in the progression of psychosis. This finding helps clarify previous inconsistent reports and highlights the need for further research into pituitary gland-related factors in individuals with psychosis.

Abstract
Background: Young athletes are thought to be models of peak physical condition, capable of exceptional physical accomplishments. However approximately 64 UK athletes aged 12 to 35 will die each year from a phenomenon known as Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD). SCD can be defined as an unexpected death as a result of abrupt loss of cardiac function within an hour of symptom onset. Undiagnosed heart conditions such as arrhythmias are often found to be the cause of SCD. Advantageous physical attributes found in athletes' hearts can complicate diagnoses as hearts with inherited conditions can appear physiologically similar to hearts adapted to strenuous exercise. Growing research surrounding SCD within sporting populations aims to decrease mortality rates however there is an absence of study specifically into SCD in dance. Within sport, the topic of cardiac screening has generated widespread controversy which is fueled by a lack of empirical evidence. There is currently no international consensus of pre participation cardiac screening methods within dance or sport, potentially leaving many dancers and athletes at risk. Methods: As part of this study, existing material surrounding the topics of SCD and cardiac screening in athletes and dancers was gathered. All existing studies at the time of writing in relation to cardiac screening in athletes and dancers were collected and analysed in order to compare results and evaluate the methodological limitations.This process aimed to identify gaps in current knowledge and research to inform future study. Results: This article aimed to analyze the epidemiology of SCD within sport and dance and to make recommendations for pre-participation screening within dance institutions. The study highlights the need to increase awareness of SCD within the dance community and determine appropriate screening approaches depending on context and setting.

Abstract
New tasks are often learned in stages with each stage reflecting a different learning challenge. Accordingly, each learning stage is likely mediated by distinct neuronal processes. And yet, most rodent studies of the neuronal correlates of goal-directed learning focus on individual outcome measures and individual brain regions. Here, we longitudinally studied mice from naïve to expert performance in a head-fixed, operant conditioning whisker discrimination task. In addition to tracking the primary behavioral outcome of stimulus discrimination, we tracked and compared an array of object-based and temporal-based behavioral measures. These behavioral analyses identify multiple, partially overlapping learning stages in this task, consistent with initial response implementation, early stimulus-response generalization, and late response inhibition. To begin to understand the neuronal foundations of these learning processes, we performed widefield Ca2+ imaging of dorsal neocortex throughout learning and correlated behavioral measures with neuronal activity. We found distinct and widespread correlations between neocortical activation patterns and various behavioral measures. For example, improvements in sensory discrimination correlated with target stimulus evoked activations of licking-related cortices along with distractor stimulus evoked global cortical suppression. Our study reveals multidimensional learning for a simple goal-directed learning task and generates hypotheses for the neuronal modulations underlying these various learning processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The piriform cortex (PC) occupies both banks of the endorhinal sulcus and has an important role in the pathophysiology of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). A recent study showed that resection of more than 50% of PC increased the odds of becoming seizure free by a factor of 16. OBJECTIVE We report the feasibility of manual segmentation of PC and application of the Geodesic Information Flows (GIF) algorithm to automated segmentation, to guide resection. METHODS Manual segmentation of PC was performed by two blinded independent examiners in 60 patients with TLE (55% Left TLE, 52% female) with a median age of 35 years (IQR, 29-47 years) and 20 controls (60% Women) with a median age of 39.5 years (IQR, 31-49). The GIF algorithm was used to create an automated pipeline for parcellating PC which was used to guide excision as part of temporal lobe resection for TLE. RESULTS Right PC was larger in patients and controls. Parcellation of PC was used to guide anterior temporal lobe resection, with subsequent seizure freedom and no visual field or language deficit. CONCLUSION Reliable segmentation of PC is feasible and can be applied prospectively to guide neurosurgical resection that increases the chances of a good outcome from temporal lobe resection for TLE.

Abstract
Electron microscopy (EM) revolutionized the way to visualize cellular ultrastructure. Volume EM (vEM) has further broadened its three-dimensional nanoscale imaging capacity. However, intrinsic trade-offs between imaging speed and quality of EM restrict the attainable imaging area and volume. Isotropic imaging with vEM for large biological volumes remains unachievable. Here, we developed EMDiffuse, a suite of algorithms designed to enhance EM and vEM capabilities, leveraging the cutting-edge image generation diffusion model. EMDiffuse generates realistic predictions with high resolution ultrastructural details and exhibits robust transferability by taking only one pair of images of 3 megapixels to fine-tune in denoising and super-resolution tasks. EMDiffuse also demonstrated proficiency in the isotropic vEM reconstruction task, generating isotropic volume even in the absence of isotropic training data. We demonstrated the robustness of EMDiffuse by generating isotropic volumes from seven public datasets obtained from different vEM techniques and instruments. The generated isotropic volume enables accurate three-dimensional nanoscale ultrastructure analysis. EMDiffuse also features self-assessment functionalities on predictions' reliability. We envision EMDiffuse to pave the way for investigations of the intricate subcellular nanoscale ultrastructure within large volumes of biological systems.

Abstract
Background Considered a normal anatomic variant, the Buford complex has not been studied in children. Hypothesis A Buford complex is not a normal anatomic variant and would, therefore, be present at a lower rate than that seen in the adult population. Study Design Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods Measurements were recorded from magnetic resonance imaging performed over 13 years in children aged ≤11 years for various pathologies unrelated to glenohumeral instability. Interrater reliability was determined to identify Buford complexes, sublabral foramens and tears, and normal shoulders via 16 preadolescent and adolescent patients with confirmed arthroscopic correlation. The Buford complex and labral foramen rates were then compared with a published rate in adults using a binomial probability test. Results A total of 122 children (62 girls; mean age, 6.4 years [age range, 2 months-10.9 years]) were evaluated. Interrater reliability was 0.846 (95% CI, 0.56-1) to identify anterosuperior labral variants. The expected sublabral foramen count was 23 children, but only 1 was identified (P < .001). The expected Buford complex count was 8 children, but none could be identified (P < .001). Conclusion The absence of Buford complexes and the significant reduction in sublabral foramen abundance in younger children suggest that these anatomic variants are more likely to be developmental than congenital. The distinct possibility that these previously considered normal variants are truly pathologic findings cannot be ignored. Evidence of a Buford complex could potentially signify an underlying, long-term shoulder instability issue to the treating provider that warrants further investigation or management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the utility of preoperative imaging before velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) surgery in children with 22q11 Deletion Syndrome (22qDS) in evaluating internal carotid artery (ICA) medialization. DATA SOURCES PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL. REVIEW METHODS Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic review was performed. Studies of children with 22qDS who underwent preoperative imaging (MRA or CTA) to identify ICA anomalies were included. High-risk medialized ICAs were defined as either submucosal, retropharyngeal, Pfeiffer Grade III-IV, or <3 mm from the pharyngeal mucosa. Meta-analyses of proportions were performed. RESULTS Eleven studies met inclusion criteria, comprising 398 patients with 22qDS (weighted mean age 7.6 years). In 372 patients with imaging, the rate of ICA medialization on imaging was 47.1% (95%CI 29.2-65.5), of which 46.3% (95%CI 27.4-65.8) were determined high risk. Operative plans were modified in 19.4% (95%CI 5.7-38.8) of 254 surgeries due to medialized ICA. In studies attempting to use nasopharyngoscopy pulsations to identify medialization for 214 patients, the true-positive rate was 53.9% (95%CI 27.5-79.2) and the false-positive rate was 16.2% (95%CI 7.9-26.8). Nine of eleven studies (81.8%) recommended universal preoperative imaging of the ICAs in children with 22qDS undergoing VPD surgery. No cases of perioperative bleeding secondary to ICA injury were identified. CONCLUSION Although most studies endorse routine preoperative imaging to assess for ICA medialization in children with 22qDS undergoing VPD surgery, only a minority of these cases led to surgical modification. Additional studies are needed to compare outcomes in children with and without preoperative imaging given the low rates of ICA injury in the literature. Abstract
Background Complex degenerative cervical spondylotic myelopathy (DCM) is characterized by a variety of complex imaging features. The surgical method for DCM remains controversial. This study aimed to examine the correlation between the imaging characteristics of DCM with varying degrees of complexity and the surgical approach and clinical outcome. Methods A retrospective cohort study involving retrospective data collection was performed. A total of 139 patients with DCM who underwent surgery between January 2015 and January 2018 in the Orthopedics Department of Shanxi Bethune Hospital were divided into 3 groups according to the complexity of imaging features: 18 patients in the mild group, 66 patients in the moderate group, and 55 patients in the severe group. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores were used to compare the effects of neck pain and neural function prior to surgery according to the rate of improvement as of the last follow-up. Routine X-ray films were obtained at the follow-up of 3-6 months. The necessity of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations was determined based on clinical findings and X-ray images. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare groups, the least significant difference (LSD) test was used for multiple comparisons, and the Chi-square test was used to compare classification indicators (imaging manifestations, gender), with P<0.05 being statistically significant. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the primary influencing factors of the JOA recovery rate. Results In all three groups, JOA and VAS scores at the final follow-up were significantly higher than those before surgery (P<0.001). There were significant differences in the preoperative VAS and JOA scores between any two groups, as well as in the VAS and JOA scores and improvement rates at the last follow-up between the mild group and the moderate group and between the mild group and the severe group (P<0.001). Age, preoperative JOA scores, MRI intramedullary hyperintensity signal, and the degree of spinal cord compression were primarily related to the nervous system recovery rate (P<0.001). Conclusions Age, MRI intramedullary hyperintensity signal, degree of spinal cord compression, and other variables were associated with the improvement of neural function in patients with DCM. Therefore, in addition to the JOA improvement rate or VAS score, additional factors, such as the patient's condition, the improvement in quality of life, and the patient's financial capacity, should be considered in evaluating the improvement of postoperative neck pain and neural function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acoustically activatable perfluoropropane droplets (PD) can be formulated from commercially available microbubble preparations. Diagnostic transthoracic ultrasound frequencies have resulted in acoustic activation (AA) predominately within myocardial infarct zones (IZ). OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that the AA area following acute coronary ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) would selectively enhance the developing scar zone, and target bioeffects specifically to this region. METHODS We administered intravenous PD in 36 rats and 20 pigs at various stages of myocardial scar formation (30 minutes, 1 day, and 7 days post I/R) to determine what effect infarct age had on the AA within the IZ. This was correlated with histology, myeloperoxidase activity, and tissue nitrite activity. RESULTS The degree of AA within the IZ in rats was not associated with collagen content, neutrophil infiltration, or infarct age. AA within 24 hours of I/R was associated with increased nitric oxide utilization selectively within the IZ (P < .05 compared with remote zone). The spatial extent of AA in pigs correlated with infarct size only when performed before sacrifice at 7 days (r = .74, P < .01). CONCLUSIONS Acoustic activation of intravenous PD enhances the developing scar zone following I/R, and results in selective tissue nitric oxide utilization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The PEDSPINE I and PEDSPINE II scores were developed to determine when patients require advanced imaging to rule out cervical spine injury (CSI) in children younger than 3 years of age with blunt trauma. This study aimed to evaluate these scores in an institutional cohort. METHODS The authors identified patients younger than 3 years with blunt trauma who received cervical spine MRI from their institution's prospective database from 2012 to 2015. Patient demographics, injury characteristics, and imaging were compared between patients with and without CSI using chi-square and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. RESULTS Eighty-eight patients were identified, 8 (9%) of whom had CSI on MRI. The PEDSPINE I system had a higher sensitivity (50% vs 25%) and negative predictive value (93% vs 92%), whereas PEDSPINE II had a higher specificity (91% vs 65%) and positive predictive value (22% vs 13%). Patients with CSI missed by the scores had mild, radiologically significant ligamentous injuries detected on MRI. Both models would have recommended advanced imaging for the patient who required halo-vest fixation (risk profile: no CSI, 81.9%; ligamentous, 10.1%; osseous, 8.0%). PEDSPINE I would have prevented 52 (65%) of 80 uninjured patients from receiving advanced imaging, whereas PEDSPINE II would have prevented 73 (91%). Using PEDSPINE I, 10 uninjured patients (13%) could have avoided intubation for imaging. PEDSPINE II would not have spared any patients intubation. CONCLUSIONS Current cervical spine clearance algorithms are not sensitive or specific enough to determine the need for advanced imaging in children. However, these scores can be used as a reference in conjunction with physicians' clinical impressions to reduce unnecessary imaging.

Abstract
PURPOSE Aseptic loosening often requires major, expensive and invasive revision surgery. Current diagnostic modalities merely show indirect signs of loosening. A recent proof of concept study proposed a non-invasive technique for the quantitative and visual assessment of implant movement as a diagnostic aid for tibial component loosening. The primary research question addressed is whether this novel diagnostic modality can safely and effectively aid the diagnosis of aseptic loosening. METHODS This clinical study included patients suspected of aseptic total knee arthroplasty (TKA) loosening listed for revision surgery and asymptomatic patients. Safety was evaluated using a numerical rating scale (NRS) for discomfort and by registration of adverse events. Feasibility was assessed by recording the duration and ease of the procedure. Intra- and interrater reliability were evaluated. In symptomatic patients, diagnostic accuracy metrics were evaluated with intra-operative assessment as a reference test. RESULTS In total, 34 symptomatic and 38 asymptomatic knees with a TKA were analysed. The median NRS for discomfort during loading was 6 (interquartile range [IQR]: 3.75-7.00) in symptomatic patients and 2 (IQR: 1.00-3.00) in asymptomatic patients. No adverse events were reported. The majority of users found the use of the loading device easy. The median time spent in the computed tomography room was 9 min (IQR: 8.00-11.00). Excellent to good intra- and interrater reliabilities were achieved. Diagnostic accuracy analysis resulted in a sensitivity of 0.91 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.72-0.97) and a specificity of 0.72 (95% CI: 0.43-0.90). CONCLUSIONS The proposed diagnostic method is safe, feasible, reliable and accurate in aiding the diagnosis of aseptic tibial component loosening. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level II.

Abstract
Understanding how the host immune system engages complex pathogens is essential to developing therapeutic strategies to overcome their virulence. While granzymes are well understood to trigger apoptosis in infected host cells or bacteria, less is known about how the immune system mobilizes individual granzyme species in vivo to combat diverse pathogens. Toward the goal of studying individual granzyme function directly in vivo, we previously developed a new class of radiopharmaceuticals termed "restricted interaction peptides (RIPs)" that detect biochemically active endoproteases using positron emission tomography (PET). In this study, we showed that secreted granzyme B proteolysis in response to diverse viral and bacterial pathogens could be imaged with [64Cu]Cu-GRIP B, a RIP that specifically targets granzyme B. Wild-type or germline granzyme B knockout mice were instilled intranasally with the A/PR/8/34 H1N1 influenza A strain to generate pneumonia, and granzyme B production within the lungs was measured using [64Cu]Cu-GRIP B PET/CT. Murine myositis models of acute bacterial (E. coli, P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae, and L. monocytogenes) infection were also developed and imaged using [64Cu]Cu-GRIP B. In all cases, the mice were studied in vivo using mPET/CT and ex vivo via tissue-harvesting, gamma counting, and immunohistochemistry. [64Cu]Cu-GRIP B uptake was significantly higher in the lungs of wild-type mice that received A/PR/8/34 H1N1 influenza A strain compared to mice that received sham or granzyme B knockout mice that received either treatment. In wild-type mice, [64Cu]Cu-GRIP B uptake was significantly higher in the infected triceps muscle versus normal muscle and the contralateral triceps inoculated with heat killed bacteria. In granzyme B knockout mice, [64Cu]Cu-GRIP B uptake above the background was not observed in the infected triceps muscle. Interestingly, live L. monocytogenes did not induce detectable granzyme B on PET, despite prior in vitro data, suggesting a role for granzyme B in suppressing their pathogenicity. In summary, these data show that the granzyme response elicited by diverse human pathogens can be imaged using PET. These results and data generated via additional RIPs specific for other granzyme proteases will allow for a deeper mechanistic study analysis of their complex in vivo biology.

Abstract
The field of nanomedicine shows promising implications in the concurrent delivery of therapeutic and diagnostic (theranostics) compounds in a single platform. Nanotheranostics is incredibly promising since it offers simultaneous non-invasive disease detection and treatment together with the exciting ability to track drug release and distribution in real-time, thereby forecasting and evaluating the efficacy of the therapy. The cancer theranostic approach improves the cancer prognosis safely and effectively. Common classes of nanoscale biomaterials, including magnetic nanoparticles, quantum dots, upconversion nanoparticles, mesoporous silica nanoparticles, carbon- based nanoparticles, and organic dye-based nanoparticles, have demonstrated enormous potential for theranostic activity. The need for improved disease detection and enhanced chemotherapeutic treatments, together with realistic considerations for clinically translatable nanomaterials will be key driving factors for theranostic agent research shortly. The developments of precision theranostic nanomaterials are employed in imaging systems like, MRI, PET, and SPECT with multifunctional ability. In this review, different nanoparticles/nanomaterials that are used/developed for theranostic activity are discussed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Exodontia is commonly considered as a risk factor for the development of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in individuals exposed to bone modifying agents. This study was aimed at assessing the efficiency and safety of a gaseous oxygen-ozone mixture as an adjuvant to a standard exodontia to reduce the risk of MRONJ development. METHODS A randomized, open-label, phase II, single-center clinical trial involving 117 patients at risk of MRONJ was conducted. The study protocol tested injections of an oxygen-ozone mixture in the post-extraction site. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: oxygen-ozone therapy, and standard tooth extraction protocol. Post-extraction wound healing was assessed using the Inflammatory Proliferative Remodeling (IPR) Wound Healing Scale. RESULTS The oxygen-ozone therapy group exhibited a significant improvement in wound healing post-extraction during the inflammatory and proliferative phases, as indicated by the IPR scale scores at 3-5 days (p = 0.006) and 14 days (p < 0.001) respectively. CONCLUSION Oxygen-ozone therapy shows promise in improving post-extraction healing in patients at risk of MRONJ. Future studies with larger sample sizes and multicenter collaborations are recommended to confirm the validity of these findings and explore the long-term efficacy of ozone therapy.

Abstract
Neurons generate various spike patterns to execute different functions. Understanding how these physiological neuronal spike patterns are related to their molecular characteristics is a long-standing issue in neuroscience. Herein, we review the results of recent studies that have addressed this issue by integrating physiological and transcriptomic techniques. A sequence of experiments, including in vivo recording and/or labeling, brain tissue slicing, cell collection, and transcriptomic analysis, have identified the gene expression profiles of brain neurons at the single-cell level, with activity patterns recorded in living animals. Although these techniques are still in the early stages, this methodological idea is principally applicable to various brain regions and neuronal activity patterns. Accumulating evidence will contribute to a deeper understanding of neuronal characteristics by integrating insights from molecules to cells, circuits, and behaviors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Automated segmentation of three-dimensional pulp space on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images presents a significant opportunity for enhancing diagnosis, treatment planning, and clinical education in endodontics. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the performance of AI-driven automated pulp space segmentation on CBCT images. METHODS A comprehensive electronic search was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases, up until February 2024. Two independent reviewers participated in the selection of studies, data extraction, and evaluation of the included studies. Any disagreements were resolved by a third reviewer. The Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 (QUADAS-2) tool was used to assess the risk of bias. RESULTS Thirteen studies that met the eligibility criteria were included. Most studies demonstrated high accuracy in their respective segmentation methods, although there was some variation across different structures (pulp chamber, root canal) and tooth types (single-rooted, multi-rooted). Automated segmentation showed slightly superior performance for segmenting the pulp chamber compared to the root canal and single-rooted teeth compared to multi-rooted ones. Furthermore, second mesiobuccal (MB2) canal segmentation also demonstrated high performance. In terms of time efficiency, the minimum time required for segmentation was 13 seconds. CONCLUSION AI-driven models demonstrated outstanding performance in pulp space segmentation. Nevertheless, these findings warrant careful interpretation, and their generalizability is limited due to the potential risk and low evidence level arising from inadequately detailed methodologies and inconsistent assessment techniques. In addition, there is room for further improvement, specifically for root canal segmentation and testing of AI performance in artifact-induced images.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the most prevalent liver tumor, is usually linked with chronic liver diseases, particularly cirrhosis. As per the 2020 statistics, this cancer ranks 6th in the list of most common cancers worldwide and is the third primary source of cancer-related deaths. Asia holds the record for the highest occurrence of HCC. HCC is found three times more frequently in men than in women. The primary risk factors for HCC include chronic viral infections, excessive alcohol intake, steatotic liver disease conditions, as well as genetic and family predispositions. Roughly 40-50% of patients are identified in the late stages of the disease. Recently, there have been significant advancements in the treatment methods for advanced HCC. The selection of treatment for HCC hinges on the stage of the disease and the patient's medical status. Factors such as pre-existing liver conditions, etiology, portal hypertension, and portal vein thrombosis need critical evaluation, monitoring, and appropriate treatment. Depending on the patient and the characteristics of the disease, liver resection, ablation, or transplantation may be deemed potentially curative. For inoperable lesions, arterially directed therapy might be an option, or systemic treatment might be deemed more suitable. In specific cases, the recommendation might extend to external beam radiation therapy. For all individuals, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach should be adopted when considering HCC treatment options. The main treatment strategies for advanced HCC patients are typically combination treatments such as immunotherapy and anti-VEGFR inhibitor, or a combination of immunotherapy and immunotherapy where appropriate, as a first-line treatment. Furthermore, some TKIs and immune checkpoint inhibitors may be used as single agents in cases where patients are not fit for the combination therapies. As second-line treatments, some treatment agents have been reported and can be considered.

Abstract
Human vision excels in perceiving nighttime low illumination due to biological feedforward adaptation. Replicating this ability in biomimetic vision using solid-state devices has been highly sought after. However, emulating scotopic adaptation, entailing a confluence of efficient photoexcitation and dynamic carrier modulation, presents formidable challenges. Here, we demonstrate a low-power and bionic scotopic adaptation transistor by coupling a light-absorption layer and an electron-trapping layer at the bottom of the semiconducting channel, enabling simultaneous achievement of efficient generation of free photocarriers and adaptive carrier accumulation within a single device. This innovation empowers our transistor to exhibit sensitivity-potentiated characteristics after adaptation, detecting scotopic-level illumination (0.001 lx) with exceptional photosensitivity up to 103 at low voltages below 2 V. Moreover, we have successfully replicated diverse scotopic vision functions, encompassing time-dependent visual threshold enhancement, light intensity-dependent adaptation index, imaging contrast enhancement for nighttime low illumination imaging, opening an opportunity for artificial night vision.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and challenges the capacity of health care systems globally. Atherosclerosis is the underlying pathophysiological entity in two-thirds of patients with CVD. When considering that atherosclerosis develops over decades, there is potentially great opportunity for prevention of associated events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. Subclinical atherosclerosis has been identified in its early stages in young individuals; however, there is no consensus on how to prevent progression to symptomatic disease. Given the growing burden of CVD, a paradigm shift is required-moving from late management of atherosclerotic CVD to earlier detection during the subclinical phase with the goal of potential cure or prevention of events. Studies must focus on how precision medicine using imaging and circulating biomarkers may identify atherosclerosis earlier and determine whether such a paradigm shift would lead to overall cost savings for global health.
