Abstract
Vitamin E status of Chinese population with different age groups was studied by determining plasma vitamin E levels (PE) and hydrogen peroxide-induced erythrocyte hemolysis (HPEH). The mean PE of 99 adults, ages 23 to 78, was 1.05 +/- 0.47 mg/100 ml. There was no significant difference between sexes. PE was negatively correlated with HPEH (P less than 0.01). There was a significant positive correlation (P less than 0.01) between PE and plasma cholesterol level. The mean PE of four young men of Yami tribesmen, ages 16 to 19, was 0.60 +/- 0.10 mg/100 ml. HPEH was low. After daily supplementation of 200 mg dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate for 16 days, PE increased 54%, but the plasma cholesterol was not affected. The mean PE of 39 elementary school children ages 12 to 13, was 0.70 +/- 0.31 mg/100 ml. The mean PE of 20 newborn infants was 0.23 +/- 0.08 mg/100 ml. HPEH was as high as 56.5 +/- 31.9% indicating a state of vitamin E deficiency. PE of total population was positively correlated with age (P less than 0.01). It was concluded that the vitamin E status of Chinese population in Taiwan was comparable to that of population groups in many other parts of the world.

Abstract
Bidirectional sodium fluxes were measured across toad bladder sacs after eliminating active transport with ouabain. Transepithelial potential was clamped to 100 mV or the Nernst potential, psieq, at varying sodium concentrations, Cm, in the mucosal medium. Serosal sodium concentration, Cs, was held constant. Equations were derived for permeability, partial ionic conductance, and unidirectional fluxes as functions of Cm and Cs, based in part on the assumption that the ratio, Q, of bulk sodium permeability to tracer sodium permeability is a constant, independent of concentration and potential. The results conformed closely to these equations.

Abstract
The conductance, ga, and electromotive force, E, of active ion transport across toad bladders mounted as sacs were estimated from electrical measurements made before and after addition of sufficient ouabain (1.89 X 10(-3) M) to eliminate spontaneous potential. The ratio of net sodium transport (estimated from bidirectional fluxes) to external current in bladders voltage clamped to 0 mV was significantly less than unity in a normal medium containing HCO3- and Cl- ions, and also when Cl- was replaced with SO42-. However, when acetazolamide was added or when HCO3- was replaced by phosphate, short-circuit current and net sodium transport became equal. Spontaneous potential, E, and ga were all reduced about 20% by these maneuvers. The response of bidirectional sodium fluxes to voltage clamping at 0 mV or 120 mV in a bicarbonate-free medium was otherwise similar to that observed in a normal medium: net flux varied linearly with potential and calculated fluxes in the active transport path indicated a value significantly greater than unity for the empirical constant Q in the equation for change in the flux ratio, f, with change in potential, psi, viz., delta ln f = Q(ZF/RT)delta psi, similar to the high value for this constant that we have found in a bicarbonate-containing medium. We conclude that bicarbonate ions facilitate active sodium transport and also may be actively transported from serosa to mucosa in Dominican toads. However, coupling between bicarbonate and sodium fluxes does not account for the high value for Q for sodium in the active transport path.

Abstract
In Experiment 1, six age groups of rats were trained to run an alley for either partial (PRF) or continuous reinforcement (CRF). Training was during a 2-day period starting at six different ages, and extinction was initiated about 12 hr later. There was a clear partial reinforcement extinction effect (PREE) at all ages and, particularly after PRF training, an inverse relationship between resistance to extinction and age. In Experiment 2, retention and durability of persistence as well as immediate persistence were tested following acquisition at three different ages. The immediate extinction tests confirmed the results of Experiment 1. In the delayed extinction tests, greater resistance to extinction following PRF than following CRF was found in all age groups after both the retention and durability manipulations. In neither test was there an effect of age in original acquisition on the magnitude of adult persistence. These experiments confirm earlier findings of remarkable persistence in rats trained and tested at weanling age, show that the persistence is even greater in pre-weanlings, and show that it is retained into young adulthood.

Abstract
Bidirectional sodium fluxes across toad bladder were measured after eliminating active transport with ouabain. Mucosal sodium concentration, Cm, was progressively reduced (from 114 to 3 mM) while serosal sodium remained constant. Potential difference was maintained at zero by current passage. The ratio, Q, of the bulk permeability coefficient for sodium, P, to the tracer sodium permeability coefficient, P, was found to remain constant as Cm decreased. Equations were derived on this basis for bidirectional fluxes and for P and P as functions of Cm, which corresponded closely to the observed data. The explanation for the observed value of Q and its constancy under these conditions is uncertain.

Abstract
Hydrogenase from C. pasteurianum is an iron-sulfur protein containing at least two tetrameric iron-sulfur centers. Information on the structure of the remaining iron atoms must await future investigation. Although the EPR spectra of dithionite-reduced hydrogenase and eight-iron Fd showed some similarity, the CD spectra clearly indicated a difference. The tetrameric iron-sulfur centers of hydrogenase were shown to undergo redox changes when hydrogenase was oxidized or reduced. However, no evidence is now available to support a role for the tetrameric Fe-S centers, responsible for the EPR spectrum A, as the primary site for H2 binding and activation. Because we have found that the [Fe4S4(SR)4]-containing ferredoxins do not have hydrogenase activity, it is conceivable that the additional iron atoms and/or certain amino acid residues of hydrogenase also contribute to the unique catalytic properties of this enzyme. Chemical synthesis of Fe-S clusters with different peptide environments and with hydrogenase function would lead to the identification of these functional groups. X-ray diffraction studies on hydrogenase will certainly complement the other approaches. Knowledge of the structure of the active site of hydrogenase will certainly accelerate research into: (1) the synthesis of a stable catalyst to replace hydrogenase in systems designed to produce H2 by coupling this catalyst to a photoreducing system; and (2) the elucidation of the active sites of more complicated iron-sulfur enzymes such as nitrogenase.

Abstract
The interaction of the nerve growth factor with the neurotubule protein has been studied with the aim of elucidating the nature of the large complexes that they form when incubated together and the factors and control this event. The results show that the binding of nerve growth factor to tubulin is followed by the formation of large structures that, in certain experimental conditions, accelerate the rate of tubulin polymerization to form microtubules or catalyze their assembly in conditions where this process does not occur spontaneously. The formation of large nerve growth factor-tubulin complexes starts to occur only at a molar ratio of 1.0-1.5 NaCL or GTP strongly inhibit this proceed without a detectable effect on NGF binding. Two hypotheses are postulated explain these findings. Firstly, that tubulin has two sites with different affinity for nerve growth factor and the polymerization occurs only when the second NGF molecule has interacted with the microtubule protein. Alternatively, free tubulin in solution is the polymerization by hindering site of tubulin-factor complexes present in solution at a 1.1 molar ratio. In both cases, GTP, Na-+ or H-+ will affect the formation of large unsoluble, tubulin-NGF complexes, by changing their conformation or by decreasing electrostatic interactions.

Abstract
To assess the active components of sodium flux across toad bladder as a function of transepithelial potential, unidirectional sodium fluxes between identical media were measured before and after adding sufficient ouabain (1.89 X 10(-3)M) to eliminate active transport, while clamping transepithelial potential to 0, 100 or 150 mV. Evidence was adduced that ouabain does not alter passive fluxes, and that fluxes remain constant if ouabain is not added. Hence, the ouabain-inhibitable fluxes represent fluxes through the active path. Results were analyzed by a set of equations, previously shown to describe adequately passive fluxes under electrical gradients in this tissue, here modified by the insertion of E, the potential at which bidirectional sodium fluxes (beta E, and theta E) through the active pathway are equal. According to these equations, beta E and theta E are the logarithmic mean of bidirectional fluxes through the active path at any potential, and the flux ratio in this path is modified by a constant factor Qia, which represents the ratio of the bulk diffusion coefficient to the tracer diffusion coefficient in this pathway. The data are shown to conform closely to these equations. Qia averages 2.54. Hence, serosal-to-mucosal flux vanishes rapidly as potential falls below E. Mean E in these experiments was 158 +/- 1 mV. Thus, linear dependence of net flux in both active and passive pathways on potential is present, even though the sodium fluxes in both paths fail to conform to the Ussing flux ratio equation. Qip less than 1 in the passive path (qualitatively similar to exchange diffusion) and Qia greater than 1 in the active path (as in single file pore diffusion). Both of these features tend to reduce the change in serosal-to-mucosal sodium flux induced by depolarization from spontaneous potential to zero potential ("short-circuiting").

Abstract
A dietary and nutritional survey of Taiwan aborigines, Atayals and Paiwans, as a follow-up study, and as a new survey on Yamis who live on an off-shore island, has been carried out recently. Great improvements in the nutritional status of the first two tribes during the last 15 years were observed. They may be attributed to a series of socio-economic reforms including education, sanitation, agriculture, and employment. The nutrient intake of the Atayals and the Paiwans appeared to be sufficient, except for riboflavin and niacin. This was indicated by a better physical growth in school children than ever before particularly at ages 11 and 12 for boys and girls alike. Their average heights and weights were all within the range of 91-95 and 78-87 % of the Iowa Standard, respectively. The nutritional status of Paiwans was better than that of Atayals. Though they are still living in a rather primitive life, Yamis showed a better supply in various nutrients than the other two tribes as a result of a high fish intake. There was almost no difference in physical growth of Yami children in comparison with the other tribes. Traditionally, Yami adults accept no other vegetables than taro and sweet potatoes. Raw fish livers and eyeballs are consumed in fair amounts as delicacies. Because of the topographic limitation of the small island and the traditional way of living of the Yamis, the authors have commented on the interrelationship between population growth and local food supply in the foreseeable future. The effects of the various programs implemented on the nutritional status of these people are discussed.
