Feasible attack on detector-device-independent quantum key distribution

Recently, to bridge the gap between security of Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) and a high key rate, a novel protocol, the so-called detector-device-independent QKD (DDI-QKD), has been independently proposed by several groups and has attracted great interest. A higher key rate is obtained, since a single photon bell state measurement (BSM) setup is applied to DDI-QKD. Subsequently, Qi has proposed two attacks for this protocol. However, the first attack, in which Bob's BSM setup is assumed to be completely a "black box", is easily prevented by using some additional monitoring devices or by specifically characterizing the BSM. The second attack, which combines the blinding attack and the detector wavelength-dependent efficiency, is not explicitly discussed, and its feasibility is not experimentally confirmed. Here, we show that the second attack is not technically viable because of an intrinsically wavelength-dependent property of a realistic beam splitter, which is an essential component in DDI-QKD. Moreover, we propose a feasible attack that combines a well-known attack-detector blinding attack with intrinsic imperfections of single-photon detectors. The experimental measurement and proof-of-principle test results confirm that our attack can allow Eve to get a copy of quantum keys without being detected and that it is feasible with current technology.

[The clinical characteristics and treatment strategies of differentiated thyroid carcinoma in adolescents and children]

Objective:To study the clinical characteristics and treatment strategies of differentiated thyroid carcinoma in adolescents and children.Method:From 1983 to 2014, total 2936 patients with the thyroid cancer were collected in our hospital, among which there were 85 patients of adolescents and children with 61 female and 24 male. The age was from 9 to 21 years old (median 18.3 years). There were 12 cases less than 14 years.The pathologic diagnoses were papillary carcinoma 76 cases and follicular carcinoma 9 cases. The clinical material, history of disease, clinical presentation, TNM classification, histopathological features, treatment method, and the final follow-up results were analyzed and studied. Result:Overall survival rate was 100%, follow-up from 0.5 to 31 years(medium 10.9 years), 10 year progression free survival rate was 87.1%. There was no mortality and 8(9.4%)cases occurred recurrence,who followed by surgery and resumed finally. There were 20 cases found extrathyroid extention, including 8 cases less than 14 years and 12 cases older than 15 years. The extrathyroid extention rate was significantly higher in cases of lower years(66.7%)than other group(16.4%)(P<0.01). Forty-nine(57.6%) cases were found lymphanods metastases, among them ≤14 years metastases rate 92.0%（11/12）significantly more than ≥15 years metastases rate 52.1%(38/73) (P<0.05). Three patients suffered with pulmonary metastases and all of them were ≤14 years patients. All of 85 patients were received surgery treatment included total, subtotal and oneside thyroidectomy. The neck lymph nodes were underwent modefied, radical or no neck dissection. Fifteen patients were received 131I therapy postoperatively, the dosage was 50～170 mCi. All of 85 patients were received TSH suppression therapy. 13 cases(15.3%) occurred complications,such as laryngeal recurrent nerve paralysis and hypoparathyroidism commonly. Conclusion:Majority of thyroid cancer for adolescents and children are papillary and follicular carcinoma. The histopathologic feature has significant invasion beyond thyroid capsula, and metastasis to the lymphanods and distante area,especially ≤14 years patients significant more than ≥15 years. The prognosis is favorable, it is few death from thyroid cancer. The treatment means is surgery to resect all of the disease, sometimes should perform total or neartotal thyroidectomy if there are distant metastasis and extensive invasion. It should pay attention to preserve the function of recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid gland. Most of them can be performed unilateral lobectomy if the tumor located oneside thyroid gland. The lymphanode metastasis should be undertaken modified neck dissection, make effort to avoid radical neck dissection. It should be carful to use 131I internal radiation therapy and avoid the excessive treatment.

Effect of the R92H and A379V genotypes of platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase on its enzyme activity, oxidative stress and metabolic profile in Chinese women with polycystic ovary syndrome

Background

The G994T polymorphism in platelet-activating factor acetylhydrolase (PAF-AH) gene is associated with the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between R92H and A379V variants of the PAF-AH gene and the risk of PCOS and to evaluate the effects of the genotypes on PAF-AH activities and clinical, metabolic and oxidative stress indexes in Chinese women.

Methods

A total of 862 patients with PCOS based on the Rotterdam consensus criteria and 750 control women from a population of Chinese Han nationality in the Chengdu area were studied from 2006–2015. PAF-AH genotypes were determined by PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Plasma PAF-AH, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated PAF-AH (H-PAF-AH) and apolipoprotein (apo) B-containing lipoprotein-associated PAF-AH (apoB-PAF-AH) activities were measured using the trichloroacetic acid precipitation procedure with PAF C-16 as a substrate. Circulating markers of oxidative stress, including serum total oxidant status, total antioxidant capacity, oxidative stress index and malondialdehyde levels, and clinical and metabolic parameters were also analyzed.

Results

No significant differences were observed in the frequencies of R92H and A379V genotypes and alleles of the PAF-AH gene between PCOS and control groups (P > 0.05). Compared with patients with the 92RR genotype, patients with H allele of R92H (RH + HH genotype) had significantly higher plasma PAF-AH and apoB-PAF-AH activities (P < 0.05) and tended to exhibit increased H-PAF-AH activity (P = 0.063) after adjusted for age and BMI. However, when serum LDL-C, HDL-C, TG and HOMA index were added as covariates, the comparisons no longer remained statistical significance (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences in clinical, hormonal, metabolic and circulating oxidative stress parameters and the frequencies of PAF-AH G449T genotype according to PAF-AH R92H or A379V genotyping in patients with PCOS and control women.

Conclusions

There were no significant associations between R92H and A379V variants of PAF-AH gene and risk of PCOS in Chinese women. The increased plasma PAF-AH and apoB-PAF-AH activities in patients with H allele of R92H are related to the R92 → H variation, changes in plasma lipoprotein levels, insulin resistance, aging, and gaining weight and thus may be involved in the pathogenesis of PCOS and the increased risks of future cardiovascular diseases.

Tunable terahertz reflection of graphene via ionic liquid gating

We report a highly efficient tunable THz reflector in graphene. By applying a small gate voltage (up to ±3 V), the reflectance of graphene is modulated from a minimum of 0.79% to a maximum of 33.4% using graphene/ionic liquid structures at room temperature, and the reflection tuning is uniform within a wide spectral range (0.1-1.5 THz). Our observation is explained by the Drude model, which describes the THz wave-induced intraband transition in graphene. This tunable reflectance of graphene may contribute to broadband THz mirrors, deformable THz mirrors, variable THz beam splitters and other optical components.

Electroacupuncture Attenuates Hyperalgesia in Rats Withdrawn from Chronic Alcohol Drinking via Habenular Mu Opioid Receptors

BACKGROUND

Hyperalgesia or increased sensitivity to pain is often found in alcoholics during alcohol withdrawal and may contribute to relapse drinking. Alternative therapies such as acupuncture and electroacupuncture (EA), through mechanisms involving opioid receptors, may reduce pain and substance dependence and withdrawal syndromes. The lateral habenula (LHb), an epithalamic structure rich in mu opioid receptors (MORs), is a critical target for both drugs of abuse and pain. We previously observed hyperalgesia in rats withdrawn from chronic ethanol (EtOH) drinking and found that EA at the acupoint Zusanli (ST36) reduced EtOH intake. This raised question of whether EA can alleviate hyperalgesia during alcohol withdrawal and, if so, whether the mechanism involves MORs in the LHb.

METHODS

We trained male rats to drink EtOH using the intermittent access 20% EtOH 2-bottle free-choice drinking paradigm for 8 weeks, after which the alcohol supply was discontinued. We measured pain sensitivity using radiant heat (a light beam directed at the hind paw of rats) and compared the paw withdrawal latencies (PWLs) with and without EA at ST36.

RESULTS

The PWLs were significantly shorter in rats at 24, 48, and 72 hours and 7 days after the discontinuation of EtOH when compared to EtOH-naïve rats. After a single administration of 2-Hz EA for 20 minutes at ST36, the PWLs at 24 hours after the withdrawal of EtOH were significantly greater than those of the sham group (2-Hz EA at the tail). Furthermore, the effect of EA on PWLs was significantly attenuated by bilateral intrahabenula infusion of the MOR antagonist naltrexone.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that EA can alleviate hyperalgesia during EtOH withdrawal through a mechanism involving MORs in the habenula. Based on this, EA could be of potential value as a therapy for hyperalgesia in alcohol dependence.

[Determination of Impurity Elements in Rosin with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry]

An analytical method for the content determining of impurity elements in rosin was established. After being dissolved and diluted in ethanol, the rosin was analyzed directly with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Some experiment conditions were optimized, such as the RF power, carrier gas flow, sample amount, and increase the temperature of plasma center channel, to improve the ionization efficiency. Proper oxygen concentration was added in plasma to make sure organic carbon been complete burned, resulting in carbon deposits eliminate and signal stable. Though equipment turn and isotopes selection can effectively eliminate interferences caused by oxide and doubly charged ions mass spectrums. A large amount of isobars and polyatomic ion interference were avoided. The collision reaction cell (CRC) technology was used to further eliminate the mass spectra interference, with He collision model and H2 reaction model, respectively. The results showed that detection limits of different impurity elements were within the range from 0.002 to 0.035 μg·g-1, and the recoveries of real added sample were between the range from 94.00% to 106.00%, and relative standard deviation is less than 3.34%. This method enables to detect rosin dissolved in ethanol directly and needs no special sample preparation equipment. This simple, fast and accurate approach provides us a new analysis method for the quality valuation of impurity elements in rosin.

Persulfate-assisted photodegradation of diethylstilbestrol using monoclinic BiVO4 under visible-light irradiation

In this study, the photosynergistic performance of BiVO₄ with persulfate (PS) is demonstrated under visible light irradiation for the first time. Diethylstilbestrol (DES) was selected as a reluctant compound, and factors including dosages of PS and catalyst, solution pHs, initial concertration of DES, and inorganic anions were evaluated. The morphology and chemical state of bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄) was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). It was found that the degradation of DES was promoted in either acid or alkaline solutions. The increase of PS and BiVO₄ dosages was beneficial to the reactions, while incremental concentration of DES showed the inhibiting effect. By scavenging h_VB⁺, Cl^- was able to make the promotion, differentiated from the exsiting HCO- 3. Moreover, the photocatalytic mechanism for the BiVO₄/PS/vis-light system was proposed by using several probe compounds (isopropanol, tert-butanol, and 1,4-benzoquinone), which consists of h+ VB/e- CB generation and recombination on the surface of BiVO₄ as well as free radical oxidation in the solutions. The study provides a distinctive method to treat organic contaminants using visible light in the aqueous environment.

Effects of jasmonic acid signalling on the wheat microbiome differ between body sites

Jasmonic acid (JA) signalling helps plants to defend themselves against necrotrophic pathogens and herbivorous insects and has been shown to influence the root microbiome of Arabidopsis thaliana. In this study, we determined whether JA signalling influences the diversity and functioning of the wheat (Triticum aestivum) microbiome and whether these effects are specific to particular parts of the plant. Activation of the JA pathway was achieved via exogenous application of methyl jasmonate and was confirmed by significant increases in the abundance of 10 JA-signalling-related gene transcripts. Phylogenetic marker gene sequencing revealed that JA signalling reduced the diversity and changed the composition of root endophytic but not shoot endophytic or rhizosphere bacterial communities. The total enzymatic activity and substrate utilisation profiles of rhizosphere bacterial communities were not affected by JA signalling. Our findings indicate that the effects of JA signalling on the wheat microbiome are specific to individual plant compartments.

Microsteganography on WS2 Monolayers Tailored by Direct Laser Painting

We present scanning focused laser beam as a multipurpose tool to engineer the physical and chemical properties of WS₂ microflakes. For monolayers, the laser modification integrates oxygen into the WS₂ microflake, resulting in ∼9 times enhancement in the intensity of the fluorescence emission. This modification does not cause any morphology change, allowing "micro-encryption" of information that is only observable as fluorescence under excitation. The same focused laser also facilitates on demand thinning down of WS₂ multilayers into monolayers, turning them into fluorescence active components. With a scanning focused laser beam, micropatterns are readily created on WS₂ multilayers through selective thinning of specific regions on the flake.

SOX9 Overexpression Promotes Glioma Metastasis via Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling

SOX9 gene encodes a transcription factor essential for a central role in the development and differentiation of multiple cell lineages, such as in neurogenesis, neural crest development, etc. Recent study reported that overexpression of SOX9 mRNA is closely associated with poor clinical outcome of patients with malignant gliomas. In the present study, we have explored the regulatory role of SOX9 in glioma metastasis. To investigate the role of SOX9 in glioma metastasis, SOX9 overexpressed in human glioma cell line U251 on cell migration and invasion was evaluated via wound scratch, Transwell assay without or with Matrigel. SOX9-induced changes in EMT process were evaluated by Western blot. Furthermore, the role of β-catenin in the regulatory effect of SOX9 on cell migration and invasion, and EMT process was explored by suppressing β-catenin expression in SOX9-overexpressed U251 cells. SOX9 overexpression in U251 cells resulted in a significant increase in cell migration and invasion. SOX9 overexpression also markedly promoted the EMT process. More importantly, our results revealed that SOX9 stimulated metastasis through activating Wnt/β-catenin signaling. In summary, this study indicated that the promoting effect of SOX9 on glioma metastasis was, at least in part, through Wnt/β-catenin signaling. The findings in this study highlight the effectiveness and therapeutic potential to utilize SOX9 targeted strategies in the treatment of glioma.

Inner Plant Values: Diversity, Colonization and Benefits from Endophytic Bacteria

One of the most exciting scientific advances in recent decades has been the realization that the diverse and immensely active microbial communities are not only 'passengers' with plants, but instead play an important role in plant growth, development and resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. A picture is emerging where plant roots act as 'gatekeepers' to screen soil bacteria from the rhizosphere and rhizoplane. This typically results in root endophytic microbiome dominated by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and to a lesser extent Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes, but Acidobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes being almost depleted. A synthesis of available data suggest that motility, plant cell-wall degradation ability and reactive oxygen species scavenging seem to be crucial traits for successful endophytic colonization and establishment of bacteria. Recent studies provide solid evidence that these bacteria serve host functions such as improving of plant nutrients through acquisition of nutrients from soil and nitrogen fixation in leaves. Additionally, some endophytes can engage 'priming' plants which elicit a faster and stronger plant defense once pathogens attack. Due to these plant growth-promoting effects, endophytic bacteria are being widely explored for their use in the improvement of crop performance. Updating the insights into the mechanism of endophytic bacterial colonization and interactions with plants is an important step in potentially manipulating endophytic bacteria/microbiome for viable strategies to improve agricultural production.

Transcriptomic Response of Chinese Yew (Taxus chinensis) to Cold Stress

Taxus chinensis is a rare and endangered shrub, highly sensitive to temperature changes and widely known for its potential in cancer treatment. How gene expression of T. chinensis responds to low temperature is still unknown. To investigate cold response of the genus Taxus, we obtained the transcriptome profiles of T. chinensis grown under normal and low temperature (cold stress, 0°C) conditions using Illumina Miseq sequencing. A transcriptome including 83,963 transcripts and 62,654 genes were assembled from 4.16 Gb of reads data. Comparative transcriptomic analysis identified 2,025 differently expressed (DE) isoforms at p < 0.05, of which 1,437 were up-regulated by cold stress and 588 were down-regulated. Annotation of DE isoforms indicated that transcription factors (TFs) in the MAPK signaling pathway and TF families of NAC, WRKY, bZIP, MYB, and ERF were transcriptionally activated. This might have been caused by the accumulation of secondary messengers, such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) and Ca²⁺. While accumulation of ROS will have caused damages to cells, our results indicated that to adapt to low temperatures T. chinensis employed a series of mechanisms to minimize these damages. The mechanisms included: (i) cold-enhanced expression of ROS deoxidant systems, such as peroxidase and phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase, to remove ROS. This was further confirmed by analyses showing increased activity of POD, SOD, and CAT under cold stress. (ii) Activation of starch and sucrose metabolism, thiamine metabolism, and purine metabolism by cold-stress to produce metabolites which either protect cell organelles or lower the ROS content in cells. These processes are regulated by ROS signaling, as the "feedback" toward ROS accumulation.

Oxidative stress status in Chinese women with different clinical phenotypes of polycystic ovary syndrome

OBJECTIVE

To determine oxidative stress status and its association with clinical and metabolic parameters in Chinese women with different clinical phenotypes of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

PATIENTS

A total of 544 patients with PCOS and 468 control women were included.

MEASUREMENTS

The total oxidant status (TOS) was determined using a microplate colorimetric method. Total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), oxidative stress index (OSI, the ratios of TOS to T-AOC) and clinical, hormonal and metabolic parameters were also analysed.

RESULTS

TOS and OSI were significantly higher in each of the four PCOS phenotypes based on the Rotterdam criteria than in the control women and higher in patients with hyperandrogenism (HA) than in those without HA (P < 0·05). TOS, T-AOC and OSI were higher in lean patients than in lean controls (P < 0·05). These values, except OSI, were also higher in overweight/obese patients than in lean patients, and lean or overweight/obese controls (P < 0·05). Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated that apolipoprotein (apo)A1, the Ferriman-Gallwey score, triglyceride (TG), oestradiol (E₂ ), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and 2-h glucose levels were the main predictors of TOS; the Ferriman-Gallwey score, E₂ , apoA1, TG and HDL-C levels were the main predictors of OSI.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with PCOS with HA have higher oxidative stress levels compared with those without HA. The increased oxidative stress in PCOS is related to HA status, increased plasma glucose, TG, HDL-C and E₂ levels, decreased apoA1 concentrations and a relative shortage of antioxidant capacity.

Co-culture microorganisms with different initial proportions reveal the mechanism of chalcopyrite bioleaching coupling with microbial community succession

The effect of co-culture microorganisms with different initial proportions on chalcopyrite bioleaching was investigated. Communities were rebuilt by six typical strains isolated from the same habitat. The results indicated, by community with more sulfur oxidizers at both 30 and 40°C, the final copper extraction rate was 19.8% and 6.5% higher, respectively, than that with more ferrous oxidizers. The variations of pH, redox potential, ferrous and copper ions in leachate also provided evidences that community with more sulfur oxidizers was more efficient. Community succession of free and attached cells revealed that initial proportions played decisive roles on community dynamics at 30°C, while communities shared similar structures, not relevant to initial proportions at 40°C. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed different microbial functions on mineral surface. A mechanism model for chalcopyrite bioleaching was established coupling with community succession. This will provide theoretical basis for reconstructing an efficient community in industrial application.

Universal Approach for Predicting Crystallography of Heterogeneous Epitaxial Nanocrystals with Multiple Orientation Relationships

Heteroepitaxial nanocrystals are one of the most fundamentally and technologically important classes of materials systems. The correlation between form, dictated by crystallographic features such as growth habit and direction, and function, in terms of the ultimate physio-chemical properties is well established, thus placing an onus on precise synthesis control of nanocrystal morphology. Yet, nanocrystal heteroepitaxy can be a frustrating, time-consuming iterative process, particularly during the initial stages of development. What is desired is a powerful predictive tool that is able to successfully predict not only the interface or habit plane, but also rationalize the occurrence of epitaxial growth complexities such as multiple orientation relationships (MORs) and high-index faceting planes for a diverse range of materials. Here we provide such a powerful approach that is based on an invariant deformation element (IDE) model, and fundamentally founded on the crystallography of diffusional phase transformations. We demonstrate its impact by detailed computations supported by transmission electron microscopy evidence, for an archetypical complex metal oxide nanocrystal system (that has up to five MORs for three differing growth orientations). The method is then applied to successfully explain growth for different materials ranging from metals to metal carbides to transition metal oxides, even in thin film form. Thus, this relatively simple yet powerful predictive guide significantly reduces the systemic inefficiencies of guesswork and blind growth. Ultimately it can be easily integrated with machine learning techniques toward reliable and efficient advanced nanomaterials fabrication.

Coherent-Interface-Assembled Ag2O-Anchored Nanofibrillated Cellulose Porous Aerogels for Radioactive Iodine Capture

Nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) has received increasing attention in science and technology because of not only the availability of large amounts of cellulose in nature but also its unique structural and physical features. These high-aspect-ratio nanofibers have potential applications in water remediation and as a reinforcing scaffold in composites, coatings, and porous materials because of their fascinating properties. In this work, highly porous NFC aerogels were prepared based on tert-butanol freeze-drying of ultrasonically isolated bamboo NFC with 20-80 nm diameters. Then nonagglomerated 2-20-nm-diameter silver oxide (Ag₂O) nanoparticles (NPs) were grown firmly onto the NFC scaffold with a high loading content of ∼500 wt % to fabricate Ag₂O@NFC organic-inorganic composite aerogels (Ag₂O@NFC). For the first time, the coherent interface and interaction mechanism between the cellulose I_β nanofiber and Ag₂O NPs are explored by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and 3D electron tomography. Specifically, a strong hydrogen between Ag₂O and NFC makes them grow together firmly along a coherent interface, where good lattice matching between specific crystal planes of Ag₂O and NFC results in very small interfacial straining. The resulting Ag₂O@NFC aerogels take full advantage of the properties of the 3D organic aerogel framework and inorganic NPs, such as large surface area, interconnected porous structures, and supreme mechanical properties. They open up a wide horizon for functional practical usage, for example, as a flexible superefficient adsorbent to capture I^- ions from contaminated water and trap I₂ vapor for safe disposal, as presented in this work. The viable binding mode between many types of inorganic NPs and organic NFC established here highlights new ways to investigate cellulose-based functional nanocomposites.

The Hsp90 Co-chaperones Sti1, Aha1, and P23 Regulate Adaptive Responses to Antifungal Azoles

Heat Shock Protein 90 (Hsp90) is essential for tumor progression in humans and drug resistance in fungi. However, the roles of its many co-chaperones in antifungal resistance are unknown. In this study, by susceptibility test of Neurospora crassa mutants lacking each of 18 Hsp90/Calcineurin system member genes (including 8 Hsp90 co-chaperone genes) to antifungal drugs and other stresses, we demonstrate that the Hsp90 co-chaperones Sti1 (Hop1 in yeast), Aha1, and P23 (Sba1 in yeast) were required for the basal resistance to antifungal azoles and heat stress. Deletion of any of them resulted in hypersensitivity to azoles and heat. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis showed that the toxic sterols eburicol and 14α-methyl-3,6-diol were significantly accumulated in the sti1 and p23 deletion mutants after ketoconazole treatment, which has been shown before to led to cell membrane stress. At the transcriptional level, Aha1, Sti1, and P23 positively regulate responses to ketoconazole stress by erg11 and erg6, key genes in the ergosterol biosynthetic pathway. Aha1, Sti1, and P23 are highly conserved in fungi, and sti1 and p23 deletion also increased the susceptibility to azoles in Fusarium verticillioides. These results indicate that Hsp90-cochaperones Aha1, Sti1, and P23 are critical for the basal azole resistance and could be potential targets for developing new antifungal agents.
