Abstract
Subcooled liquid vapor pressures (P(L)) are of great importance for assessing the persistent behavior of organic pollutants. As P(L) cannot be determined by direct experiments, it is of interest to develop and evaluate various predictive methods. In the current study, gas chromatography retention index (GC-RI) and quantitative structure-property relationship (QSPR) methods were used to develop predictive models for P(L) of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). The model development was based on P(L) values converted from consistent experimental solid vapor pressures (P(S)). The P(L) values predicted by the two methods are highly consistent with each other, and in-between sets of values predicted by others. Since the QSPR method can be regarded as independent of experiments, and can be used to interpret intermolecular interactions that govern the magnitude of P(L), it may be superior to the GC-RI method.

Abstract
Using both laser-excited fluorescence and optical absorption methods, we have determined 57 crystal-field (CF) energy levels of Sm 3+ in crystals of Sm(Et2Dtc)3(bipy). The analysis of the energy levels is based on a model Hamiltonian consisting of both free-ion and CF terms. The CF modeling of the experimental energy levels yielded physically reasonable Hamiltonian parameters with a final rms deviation of 17.3 cm(-1). In comparison with Sm 3+ in other hosts, the CF splitting of Sm 3+ in the lattice of Sm(Et2Dtc)3(bipy) is rather weak. The observed fluorescence decay of the 4G(5/2) manifold is single-exponential, with a lifetime of 24.5 mus, indicating only one site of Sm3+ in the lattice. According to the Judd-Ofelt theory, values of three intensity parameters were obtained (Omega(2,4,6) = 1.57, 2.65, and 3.65, in units of 10(-20) cm(-1)). The calculated branching ratios for transitions from the 4G(5/2) manifold are in agreement with experimental values. The calculated radiative lifetime of the 4G(5/2) manifold is 3.24 ms, and the corresponding fluorescence quantum efficiency is only 0.75%. Efficient multiphonon relaxation processes induced by the localized high-frequency vibrational modes in the bipyridyl group may lead to the extremely low quantum efficiency observed. The thermal line broadening and shifts of the 4G(5/2)(1) --> 6F(1/2) transition were observed and fitted very well by the McCumber-Sturge equations with an assumption of Raman phonon scattering processes as the leading relaxation mechanism. The Debye temperature for this crystal is predicted to be 350 K.

Abstract
Mechanisms that control the proliferation capability of the initiated cells during hepatocarcinogenesis are still largely unclear. We investigated the role of a pro-death Bcl-2 family protein, Bid, in liver tumor development using a neonatal diethylnitrosamine model. Diethylnitrosamine was administrated to 15-day-old wild-type and bid-null mice. The development of microfoci at the early stage and of gross tumors at the later stage was compared between the two groups of mice. Both microfoci and gross tumor development were significantly retarded in the bid-null mice, despite reduced cell death as measured by TUNEL staining. Further studies indicated that there were significantly less proliferating cells in diethylnitrosamine-treated bid-null livers. The regulation of cell proliferation by Bid was confirmed in two other systems not involving carcinogenesis. Hepatocyte proliferation following partial hepatectomy and T lymphocyte proliferation following anti-CD3 stimulation were both retarded in bid-null mice. Thus, these studies revealed a previously undisclosed function of Bid in regulating cell proliferation, which can be important to tumor development. Furthermore, the role of Bid in promoting hepatocarcinogenesis is in contrast to its reported role in suppressing myeloid leukemia and thus suggests an organ- and/or etiology-specific role of the Bcl-2 family proteins in regulating oncogenesis.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the role of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and its downstream cytokine cascade in necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). METHODS AND RESULTS The expression of MIF mRNA and protein in NEC guts was assayed by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, respectively. Concentrations of MIF, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 in the serum and in the supernatant of macrophage cultures were examined by ELISA. Increased expression of MIF mRNA and protein was observed in the NEC guts, mainly in the infiltrating macrophages in the mucosa and submucosal layers. Up-regulation of MIF was associated with the accumulation of macrophages and T cells. In addition, serum levels of MIF, IL-6 and IL-8 in NEC patients during the acute stage of the disease were significantly increased. The expression of MIF decreased both locally and systemically after the disease was resolved. MIF was also found to increase the secretion of IL-6 and IL-8 by macrophages isolated from healthy individuals in vitro in NEC. CONCLUSIONS MIF acts by stimulating macrophage production of IL-6 and IL-8. This further aggravates the inflammatory process by increasing the infiltration of neutrophils and activating inflammatory cells. The results of this study suggest that MIF plays an important role in the pathogenesis of NEC and may serve as a target for therapeutic intervention in NEC.

Abstract
In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility to collect off-electronic resonance chiral sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectra from interfacial proteins and peptides at the solid/liquid interface in situ. It is difficult to directly detect a chiral SFG vibrational spectrum from interfacial fibrinogen molecules. By adopting an interference enhancement method, such a chiral SFG vibrational spectrum can be deduced from interference spectra between the normal achiral spectrum and the chiral spectrum. We found that the chiral SFG vibrational spectrum of interfacial fibrinogen was mainly contributed by the beta-sheet structure. For a beta-sheet peptide tachyplesin I, which may be quite ordered at the solid/liquid interface, chiral SFG vibrational spectra can be collected directly. We believe that these chiral signals are mainly contributed by electric dipole contributions, which can dominate the chiroptical responses of uniaxial systems. For the first time, to our knowledge, this work indicates that the off-electronic resonance SFG technique is sensitive enough to collect chiral SFG vibrational spectra of interfacial proteins and peptides, providing more structural information to elucidate interfacial protein and peptide structures.

Abstract
We demonstrated that sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy can distinguish different secondary structures of proteins or peptides adsorbed at solid/liquid interfaces. The SFG spectrum for tachyplesin I at the polystyrene (PS)/solution interface has a fingerprint peak corresponding to the B1/B3 mode of the antiparallel beta-sheet. This peak disappeared upon the addition of dithiothreitol, which can disrupt the beta-sheet structure. The SFG spectrum indicative of the MSI594 alpha-helical structure was observed at the PS/MSI594 solution interface. This research validates SFG as a powerful technique for revealing detailed secondary structures of interfacial proteins and peptides.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Influenza is an acute respiratory communicable disease which can cause high morbidity and mortality in an epidemic. Traditional Chinese medicinal herbs following a particular theory may be a potential medicine of choice. OBJECTIVES The objective of this review was to assess the therapeutic effect and adverse reaction of Traditional Chinese medicinal herbs in treating uncomplicated influenza. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library Issue 3, 2004); MEDLINE (January 1966 to October 2004); EMBASE (January 1988 to October 2004); CBM (Chinese Biomedical Database) (January 1980 to December 2003); and the Chinese Cochrane Center's Controlled Trials Register (up to December 2003). We also searched Current Controlled Trials (www.controlled-trials.com) and the National Research Register (http://www.update-software.com/National/) for ongoing trials and reference lists of articles. We wrote to researchers in the field, or authors of studies evaluated in the review for more information. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised and quasi-randomised trials comparing traditional Chinese medicinal herbs with placebo, or various other Chinese medicinal herbs, or with other current regimes normally used in care or comparing drugs with herbal preparations to simple drugs in treating defined uncomplicated influenza patients. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS At least two reviewers extracted data and assessed trial quality. MAIN RESULTS Eleven studies with the number of participants ranged from 52 to 479. In total 2,088 participants were included in the review. As the interventions of the included studies were different from each other and most of the studies were of low quality, we did not perform a summary meta-analysis. Some of the studies showed positive results favouring Traditional Chinese medicinal herb treatment compared to antiviral or antipyretic-analgesic drugs or the combination of them. Only three studies mentioned adverse reactions but no detailed data were acquired in the included studies. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS The small number of included studies and participants, as well as the low quality of most studies, made the evidence far from conclusive for clinical decision making, although traditional Chinese medicinal herbs as a whole seem to be comparatively or more effective compared to different chemical drugs. A certain herbal preparation could not be recommended for there was not enough evidence. More high quality randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with similar interventions are required to strengthen the evidence for the efficacy and safety of certain herbal preparation.

Abstract
The optimal cutoff point of glutamate decarboxylase antibody (GAD-Ab) titers for differentiating two latent autoimmune diabetes (LADA) subtypes remains unclear. One hundred and forty-five GAD-Ab-positive patients screened from phenotypic type 2 diabetes were diagnosed as LADA. The clinical features were compared among LADA patients with different GAD-Ab titers. The receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic value of GAD-Ab titers and to define the optimal cutoff point. The heterogeneity of clinical features in LADA could be discriminated by five GAD-Ab titers, with maximal differences at the titer of 175 U/mL. The ROC curve analysis showed that the optimal cutoff point for discriminating two LADA subtypes was at the titer of 175 U/mL, with sensitivity and specificity of 54.5% and 92.1%, respectively. These findings demonstrated that the two clinically distinct subtypes of LADA can be optimally discriminated by the GAD-Ab titers.

Abstract
1. A sensitive liquid chromatographic-tandem mas spectrometric assay was developed and validated to determine the major metabolite of betahistine, 2-pyridylacetic acid, in human plasma. 2. The analyte was extracted from plasma samples by liquid-liquid extraction and analysed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry with an electrospray ionization interface. The method has a lower limit of quantitation of 1 ng ml(-1) fir a 0.5-ml plasma aliquot. The intra- and interday precision (relative standard deviation), calculated from quality control (QC) samples, was less than 10%. Accuracy as determined from QC samples was within +/-7%. 3. The validated method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study of betahistine in healthy volunteers. After oral administration of a single dose of 24 mg betahistine mesylate to 20 healthy Chinese male volunteers, Cmax was 339.4 ng ml(-1) (range 77.3-776.4 ng ml(-1)). The t(1/2) was 5.2 h (range 2.0(-1)-11.4h). The AUC(0-t) obtained was 1153.5 ng ml(-1) h (range 278.5-3150.8 ng ml(-1)). The disposition of the metabolite exhibited a marked interindividual variation. 4. The plasma concentrations of the parent drug were less than 0.5 ng ml(-1), suggesting that it undergoes almost complete first-pass metabolism. The reported two active metabolites were not detected in the plasma of any volunteer. Although there is no evidence that the major metabolite has pharmacological activity, the clinical importance of 2-pyridylacetic acid in humans should be reinvestigated.

Abstract
This study was conducted at the long-term experimental plots in Ecological Experimental Station of Red Soil in Yujiang County (28 degrees 15'30''N, 116 degrees 55'30''E ), Jiangxi Province, subtropical China. Earthworm population was investigated seasonally from May 1999 to February 2000, under different vegetations including four artificial woodlands [deciduous broadleaf woodland (Quercus chenii, Qc), evergreen broadleaf woodland (Schima superba, Ss), coniferous woodland (Pinus massonina, Pm) and mixed woodland (Schima superba-Pinus massonina, Sm)], two grasslands [gently-disturbed grassland (G1), undisturbed grassland (G2)] and control wasteland (CK). The results indicated that the population structure was very simple. Only Drawinda gisti characterized by pioneer was found. The seasonal averages of density and biomass were in the order of G2 > G1 > Qc > Ss > Pm > Sm > CK, and those of G2, G1 and Qc were significantly higher than those of the latters (P < 0.05). Seasonal fluctuations were obvious with dry-hot summer depressing the earthworm population sharply, leading to the aestivation of earthworm. Based on the variation coefficients of density and biomass, Qc had the highest ecosystem stability, followed by Sm and Ss, and G1, G2, and Pm had the lowest stability. The overall differentiation of earthworm population could be drawn through canonical discriminant analysis. There were significant correlations between earthworms and some soil properties (P < 0.01). Overall, the differentiation of earthworm population was driven by the quantity and quality of soil organic matter returned by the vegetations. Additionally, based on earthworm population, the importance of selecting appropriate vegetation types during the restoration of degraded red soil was emphasized.

Abstract
In recent years, China has conducted considerable research focusing on the emission and effects of sulphur (S) on human health and ecosystems. By contrast, there has been little emphasis on anthropogenic nitrogen (N) so far, even though studies conducted abroad indicate that long-range atmospheric transport of N and ecological effects (e.g. acidification of soil and water) may be significant. The Sino-Norwegian project IMPACTS, launched in 1999, has established monitoring sites at five forest ecosystems in the southern part of PR China to collect comprehensive data on air quality, acidification status and ecological effects. Here we present initial results about N dynamics at two of the IMPACTS sites located near Chongqing and Changsha, including estimation of atmospheric deposition fluxes of NOx and NHx and soil N transformations. Nitrogen deposition is high at both sites when compared with values from Europe and North America (25-38 kg ha(-1) yr(-1)). About 70% of the deposited N comes as NH4, probably derived from agriculture. Leaching of N from soils is high and nearly all as NO3-. Transformation of N to NO3- in soils results in acidification rates that are high compared to rates found elsewhere. Despite considerable leaching of NO3- from the root zone of the soils, little NO3- appears in streamwater. This indicates that N retention or denitrification, both causing acid neutralization, may be important and probably occur in the groundwater and groundwater discharge zones. The soil flux density of mineral N, which is the sum of N deposition and N mineralization, and which is dominated by the N mineralization flux, may be a good indicator for leaching of NO3- in soils. However, this indicator seems site specific probably due to differences in land-use history and current N requirement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between the life quality of advanced laryngeal squamous cell cancer patients and their personality, coping style and other psychological factors. METHODS The life quality were measured for 2 sub-groups of advanced laryngeal cancer patients and the normal control group. The Eysenck personality questionnaire (EPQ), coping style questionnaires (CSQ) and University of Washington-quality of life (UW-QOL) were used for life quality evaluation. The 2 sub-groups of the patients on the worse speech, job and ability (group I), the better speech, job and ability (group II), and normal control. RESULTS (1) UW-QOL score: the total, activity, recreation, job and speech scores of group II were significantly higher than those of group I (P < 0.01). Group II was better than group I in appearance (P < 0.05). (2) EPQ score: the P and N scores in group II were lower than that in group I (P < 0.05). The E scores in group II were significantly higher than that in group I (P < 0.01). (3) CSQ score: the problem-saving factor and help-seeking factor in group II were more significantly lower than that in group I (P < 0.01). The self-blaming factor in group II were higher than that in group I (P < 0.05). (4) There was positive correlation between total scores of QOL and the problem-saving factor, help-seeking factor of CSQ, the E scores of EPQ (P < 0.05), there was negative correlation between total scores of QOL and the P scores, the N scores of EPQ (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The advanced laryngeal cancer patients of group II have better life quality, and their personalities showed more extroversive, stable feeling, adaptable, mature coping styles. The above characteristics may have good effects on the prognosis of advanced laryngeal cancer.

Abstract
A new approach for the surface grafting of polymer chains to colloidal substrates is described. A cationic macroinitiator has been designed for the surface polymerization of a wide range ofhydrophilic methacrylates from ultrafine inorganic oxide sols by atom transfer radical polymerization in protic media at ambient temperature. One advantage of this approach is that it allows one-pot syntheses: the macroinitiator is adsorbed onto the sol, followed by an in situ polymerization. Nonionic, cationic, and betaine monomers can be polymerized directly by this protocol, with reasonably high conversions being obtained, as judged by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Anionic monomers such as sodium 4-styrenesulfonate cannot be polymerized directly due to incompatibility problems with the cationic macroinitiator-coated sol. However, hydroxylated monomers such as glycerol monomethacrylate can be surface-polymerized and then converted to anionic polyelectrolytes by reaction with succinic anhydride under mild conditions. This derivatization was confirmed by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopic analysis. Thermogravimetry was used to assess the degree of polymer grafting. Higher target degrees of polymerization led to increased grafted polymer loadings, as expected. Particle morphologies and relative degrees of dispersion in aqueous solution were assessed by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering, respectively. Surface characterization of the polymer-grafted sols was achieved by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and aqueous electrophoresis measurements. Most of the data reported in this study concern surface polymerizations from ultrafine silica sols, but some preliminary data for ultrafine tin(IV) oxide sols are also presented. Since most surfaces are negatively charged, this cationic macroinitiator approach can, in principle, be extended to include a wide range of sols, latexes, and planar substrates without requiring a separate surface functionalization step.

Abstract
A gnotobiotic microcosm experiment was conducted to study the influence of bacterivorous nematodes (Protorhabditis sp.) on bacteria (Pseudomonas fluorescens) population under different conditions including substrate concentration, oscillation pattern, and numbers of nematodes inoculated. When the bacteria were incubated under intermittent oscillation by hand (6 times at 0.5 h intervals, 22 degrees C), their growth was stimulated in the presence of nematoedes, and the bacteria grew faster with the increase of nematode numbers and substrate (liquid potato-sucrose medium) concentration. However, when the incubation was under continuous oscillation (100 rpm, 22 degrees C), bacteria population was deflated with the addition of nematodes, and the inhibition was greater when a higher concentration of substrate was used. It was found that the stimulation or inhibition of bacteria population by nematodes occurred in the logarithmic stage of bacteria growth. The optimal and over-grazing of nematodes on regulating bacteria population was discussed.

Abstract
In this Communication, we demonstrate the novel observation that it is feasible to collect amide signals from polymer/protein solution interfaces in situ using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. Such SFG amide signals allow for acquisition of more detailed molecular level information of entire interfacial protein structures. Proteins investigated include bovine serum albumin, mussel protein mefp-2, factor XIIa, and ubiquitin. Our studies indicate that different proteins generate different SFG amide signals at the polystyrene/protein solution interface, showing that they have different interfacial coverage, secondary structure, or orientation.

Abstract
AIMS To characterize directly the conjugated metabolites of morphine in urine samples of cancer patients. METHODS Urine samples from the patients were treated by solid-phase extraction method and chromatographed using three high-performance liquid chromatography systems. Conjugated metabolites were directly detected with liquid chromatographic/ion trap mass spectrometric (LC/MSn) technique by selected ion monitoring, full scan MS/MS and MS3 modes. RESULTS Six conjugated metabolites including two new metabolites M5 and M6 were found. Morphine-3-glucuronide (M-3-G) and morphine-6-glucuronide (M-6-G) were identified by comparing their l.c. retention times and multistage mass spectra with those of the reference substances. Two novel metabolites, morphine-3-glucoside and morphine-6-glucoside, as well as normorphine glucuronides were identified by comparing their mass fragment patterns and l.c. retention times with those of M-3-G and M-6-G. Hydrolysis of urine samples with beta-glucosidase and beta-glucuronidase provided further evidence of the metabolites M5 and M6 as morphine glucosides. The excretion amounts of morphine conjugates in urines were in the order of morphine glucuronides, morphine glucosides and normorphine glucuronides. CONCLUSIONS In the present study, the applications of l.c. separation and multistage mass spectra have permitted the direct identification of conjugated metabolites of morphine. To our knowledge, this is the first report about O-linked glucosides of morphine at 3-aromatic and 6-aliphatic hydroxyl groups.

Abstract
This study was carried out in the Experimental Station of Nanjing Agricultural University, which is in a subtropical monsoon region characterized by a warm-wet spring and a hot-dry summer. The annual average temperature, precipitation and evaporation are 15.6 degrees C, 1010 mm and 1560 mm, respectively. In 1999, the experimental plots (2.8 m x 1.0 m x 0.6 m) were established by concrete frame. Soil in the plots was orthic aquisols collected from Rugao County, Jiangsu Province. Crop rotation was upland rice and winter wheat. At the beginning of the first crop (rice) season, earthworms (Pheretima sp.) were inoculated at a density of 10.m-2 and 20.m-2, respectively, in the plots with an application of corn residues at the rate of 1500 g.m-2(750 g.m-2 in the following seasons). The responses of soil carbon and nitrogen and crop yield to earthworm activity were investigated from 1999 to 2001. The results showed that earthworms had no significant influences on total soil carbon and nitrogen content, which implied that there was no depletion of soil carbon and nitrogen pools in the presence of earthworms. The maintenance of soil carbon might be explained by low assimilation efficiency of organic matter by earthworms, and by the compensation of carbon returning from plant production enhancement. Soil mineral nitrogen, soil microbial biomass carbon and microbial biomass nitrogen were increased, and nitrogen mineralization was strengthened by earthworm activities, which was more obvious at jointing/booting and heading stages. In comparison with no-worm treatments, the yield of rice wheat increased by 9.3% and 5.1%, respectively, in the treatments inoculated with earthworms. It was concluded that earthworm was very important in promoting nitrogen recycling of crop residues and plant productivity, and in keeping the balance of soil carbon pool as well.

Abstract
Rice is the principal food for over half of the population of the world. With its genome size of 430 megabase pairs (Mb), the cultivated rice species Oryza sativa is a model plant for genome research. Here we report the sequence analysis of chromosome 4 of O. sativa, one of the first two rice chromosomes to be sequenced completely. The finished sequence spans 34.6 Mb and represents 97.3% of the chromosome. In addition, we report the longest known sequence for a plant centromere, a completely sequenced contig of 1.16 Mb corresponding to the centromeric region of chromosome 4. We predict 4,658 protein coding genes and 70 transfer RNA genes. A total of 1,681 predicted genes match available unique rice expressed sequence tags. Transposable elements have a pronounced bias towards the euchromatic regions, indicating a close correlation of their distributions to genes along the chromosome. Comparative genome analysis between cultivated rice subspecies shows that there is an overall syntenic relationship between the chromosomes and divergence at the level of single-nucleotide polymorphisms and insertions and deletions. By contrast, there is little conservation in gene order between rice and Arabidopsis.

Abstract
An experiment has been carried out to investigate the self-correction function of a self-correction ultrasonic stepping motor. When a slider (rotor) is placed on a vibrating beam (stator), it will stay at a stable equilibrium position. If the slider is slightly moved off the equilibrium position, a restoring force will urge the slider back towards its equilibrium position. The experimental result shows that the position of the maximum restoring force on the slider differs from that predicted by using the linear theory. Study found that when a quadratic form is assumed for the dynamic friction coefficient, the theoretical and experimental results are in good agreement.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the relation between Helicobacter pylori associated gastroduodenal diseases and lymphoid tissue hyperplasia in the antral mucosa and to pursue its evolution after eradication of H pylori. METHODS Gastric antral biopsy specimens were obtained from 438 patients with H pylori positive gastroduodenal diseases (185 chronic gastritis, 69 gastric ulcer, and 184 duodenal ulcer) and 50 H pylori negative healthy controls. Lymphoid follicles and aggregates were counted and other pathological features were scored according to the updated Sydney system for classification of chronic gastritis. After a course of anti-H pylori treatment, biopsy specimens were obtained at four to six weeks, 12 months, and 24 months in the chronic gastritis patient group. RESULTS The total prevalence of lymphoid follicles and aggregates in the biopsies was 79.9% (350 of 438; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 0.76 to 0.84). The prevalence and density of lymphoid follicles and aggregates were significantly different in the various gastroduodenal diseases. The highest prevalence (89.9%; 95% CI, 0.83 to 0.97) and density (0.82) of lymphoid follicles and aggregates occurred in patients with gastric ulcers. The lowest prevalence of lymphoid follicles and aggregates was found in patients with chronic gastritis (74.6%; 95% CI, 0.68 to 0.81), and the lowest density of lymphoid follicles and aggregates (0.56) was seen in patients with duodenal ulcers. The prevalence and density of lymphoid follicles and aggregates correlated strongly with the activity and severity of gastric antral mucosal inflammation. The eradication of H pylori resulted in a decrease in the prevalence and density of lymphoid follicles and aggregates. CONCLUSION The prevalence and density of lymphoid follicles and aggregates in gastric antral mucosal biopsies correlated closely with H pylori infection.

Abstract
AIM: To study the purifying method and characteristics of new gosling viral enteritis virus (NGVEV), the etiological agent of new gosling viral enteritis (NGVE) which was first recognized in China, as well as the pathomorphological development in goslings infected artificially with NGVEV.
METHODS: ① NGVEV virions were purified by the procedure of treatment with chloroform and ammonium sulfate precipitation, dialysis to remove the sulfate radical and ammonium ion and separation by gel filtration chromatography, and SDS-PAGE. ② Forty 2-day-old White Sichuan goslings were orally administered with NGVEV and 24 h later 2 birds were randomly selected and killed at 24 h intervals until death occurred. Specimens (duodenum, ileum, liver, heart, kidney, spleen, lung, proventriculus, pancreas, esophagus, and the intestinal embolus) were taken until all birds in this group died and were sectioned and stained with hemotoxylin and eosin and studied by light microscope.
RESULTS: NGVEV shared the typical characteristics of Adenovirus and which structural proteins consisted of 15 polypeptides. Necrosis and sloughing of the epithelial cells covering the villus tips of the duodenum were first observed in goslings 2 d postinfection artificially with NGVEV. With the progress of infection, this lesion rapidly occurred in the epithelium at the base of the villus and with infiltration of the inflammatory cells, the jejunum tended to be involved. With the intensification of mucosa necrosis and inflammatory exudation of the small intestine, fibrinonecrotic enteritis was further developed and embolus composed of either intestinal contents wrapped by pseudomembrane or of the mixture of fibrous exudate and necrotic intestinal mucosa were observed in the middle-lower part of the small intestine. This structure occluded the intestinal tract and made the intestine dilated in appearance. The intestinal glandular cells underwent degeneration, necrosis and might be found sloughed into the lumen. Hemorrhage and hyperemia could be observed on the lung and kidney. Epithelial cells of the renal tubular underwent degeneration. In some cases, granular degeneration and fatty degeneration could be found in the liver and in some cases at a later stage of this disease the epithelial cells of trachea and proventriculus might be found sloughed. In some cases at an early stage of this disease, cardiac hyperemia and hemorrhage could be observed. Esophagus, pancreas and brain were found normal. Analyses and comparisons between the pathologic lesions of NGVE and Gosling Plague (GP) were available in this paper as well.
CONCLUSION: ① NGVEV is adenovirus. ② Pathological characteristic could be as the data for NGVE diagnosis.

Abstract
In order to assess the long-term effects of implanted electrodes on motor unit properties, we studied triceps surae (TS) motor units in rats implanted for 3-10 months with a tibial nerve cuff electrode for H-reflex elicitation and intramuscular electrodes for recording TS electromyographic activity. Motor units with sag from implanted rats displayed greater tetanic force than those from unimplanted rats. Motor units without sag had shorter twitch contraction times. This disrupted the relationship between sag and contraction time that was always present in unimplanted rats. These differences were consistent with a small degree of muscle denervation and subsequent reinnervation. Further analyses ascribed this effect to the nerve cuff rather than to the intramuscular electrodes. Comparable changes in motor unit properties may occur in humans with implanted nerve cuffs.
