Abstract
Our previous study revealed PAHs' wide occurrence in corals from multiple coral reef regions (CRRs) in the South China Sea. However, little is known about their occurrence, distribution, fate, and sources in the ambient environment of these CRRs. This study aimed to resolve these research gaps. The results showed ∑15PAHs (total concentrations of 15 US EPA priority controlled PAHs exclude naphthalene) in the atmosphere (gas-phase: 0.31-49.6 ng m-3; particle-phase: 2.6-649 pg m-3) were mainly influenced by air mass origins. Southwesterly wind caused higher ∑15PAHs than the southeasterly wind. The ∑15PAHs in seawater from the nearshore (462 ± 244 ng L-1) was higher than that from offshore Zhongsha Islands (80.5 ± 72.1 ng L-1) because of the effect of terrigenous pollution and ocean current. Source apportionment indicated that the mixed sources of spilled oil and combustion from neighboring countries were the main contributors to PAHs in these CRRs. The total deposition fluxes showed that PAHs tended to migrate from the atmosphere to seawater. Global warming may inhibit this process, but PAHs still have a migration pattern of atmosphere-ocean-corals, which will further increase the environmental pressure on coral reef ecology.

Abstract
Environmental conditions between the outer reef slope (ORS) and lagoon in tropical atolls are significantly different, but the variations of juvenile coral-microbiomes in the two environments and their relationship with coral thermal acclimatization are poorly understood. We explored this issue based on local water conditions and the microbiome of juvenile corals in the ORS and lagoon in the central South China Sea. Coral-symbiotic Symbiodiniaceae showed significant differences among coral species; Pocillopora verrucosa and Pachyseris rugosa in the ORS, and Acropora formosa in the lagoon were dominated by Durusdinium, but other corals were dominated by Cladocopium. Although A. formosa in the ORS were dominated by Cladocopium (C3u), they were dominated by Durusdinium (D1/D1a) and Cladocopium (C50) in the lagoon. Other coral species were both dominated by Cladocopium in the lagoon and ORS. The relative abundance of bacteria in the Deinococcus-Thermus was generally higher in the lagoon corals than in the ORS corals. Our study indicates that P. verrucosa, P. rugosa and Porites lutea may have high thermal tolerance based on the relatively high abundance of heat-tolerant Durusdinium and Thermus scotoductus. Likewise, A. formosa in the lagoon may acclimatize to the thermal environment based on a high relative abundance of heat-tolerant Durusdinium.

Abstract
Developing novel functional materials with promising desired properties in enhancing energy conversion and lowering the catalytic reaction barriers is essential for the demand to solve the increasingly severe energy and environmental crisis nowadays. Metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) are widely used in the field of catalysis because of its excellent catalytic characteristics. Introduction of defects, in addition to the adjustment of composition and atomic arrangement in the materials can effectively improve the materials' catalytic performance. Especially, introducing oxygen vacancies (OVs) into the lattice structure of MOS has been developed as a facile route to improve MOS's optical and electronic transmission characteristics. And a large number of metal oxides with rich OVs have been served in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2-RR) photo-degradation of organic pollutants, etc. This small review briefly outlines some preparation techniques to introduce OVs into MOS, and the characterization techniques to identify and quantify the OVs in MOS. The applications of OVs contained MOS especially in energy and environmental catalysis areas are also discussed. The effects of OVs types and concentrations on the catalytic performances are deliberated. Finally, the defective structure-catalytic property relationship is highlighted, and the future status and opportunities of MOS containing OVs in the catalytic field are suggested.

Abstract
Background Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive intracranial tumor which can be divided into two subtypes based on status of isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH). A small fraction of patients after receiving standard treatment can be long-term survivors (LTS). This study was designed to disclose the predictors and clinical implications associated with LTS in IDH wildtype and mutant GBM. Methods Patients who survived beyond five years after diagnosis of GBM were defined as LTS, while those with a survival less than one year were defined as short-term survivors (STS). A total of 211 patients with diagnosis of GBM in Beijing Tiantan Hospital from January 2007 to January 2015 were enrolled, including 44 (20.9%) LTS and 167 (79.1%) STS. The clinical, radiological and molecular features between groups were systematically compared. Results Compared with STS, LTS were a subgroup of patients with a younger age at diagnosis (P=0.006), a higher KPS score (P=0.011), higher rates of cystic change (P=0.037), O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation (P=0.007), and IDH mutation (P=0.049), and more likely to have undergone gross total resection (P<0.001). Survival analysis demonstrated that LTS with wildtype IDH conferred a longer progression-free survival (66.0 vs. 27.0 months, P=0.04), but a shorter post-progression survival (46.5 months vs. not reached, P=0.0001) than those of LTS with mutant IDH. LTS with mutant IDH showed a trend towards increased survival after receiving re-operation (P=0.155) and reirradiation (P=0.127), while this clinical benefit disappeared in the subset of LTS with wildtype IDH (P>0.05). Conclusion The prognostic value and therapeutic implications associated with LTS in GBM population significantly differed on the basis of IDH status. Our findings provide a new approach for physicians to better understand the two subtypes of GBM, which may assist in making more tailored treatment decisions for patients.

Abstract
Background World Health Organization (WHO) grade IV glioma remains one of the most lethal tumors with a dismal prognosis and inevitable recurrence. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of immunotherapy with radiotherapy in this population of patients. Methods This study was a single-arm, open-label, phase I trial based on patients with recurrent WHO grade IV glioma. Patients were treated with intracranial and systemic immunoadjuvants in combination with low-dose reirradiation. The primary endpoint of the present trial was safety. Secondary endpoints were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). This trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03392545. Results Thirty patients were enrolled. The most common adverse events (AEs) were fever (66.7%), vomiting (33.3%), headache (30.0%), and fatigue (23.3%). Only a single patient experienced grade 3 fever, and no grade 4 AEs or deaths related to treatment were observed. Of the 30 patients, 1 (3.3%) had a complete response, 5 (16.7%) had a partial response, 9 (30.0%) had stable disease, and 15 (50.0%) had progressive disease, resulting in an objective response rate of 20.0%. The median PFS of the entire cohort was 88.0 (61.0-254.0) days, and the median OS was 362.0 (197.0-601.0) days. Patients could be divided into responders and non-responders, and these groups exhibited a significant difference in terms of survival time, T lymphocyte subsets, frequency of cell division cycle 27 (CDC27) mutation status, and CD15 and CD68 expression (P<0.05). Conclusion The combination of immunotherapy and radiotherapy is well tolerated and may provide clinical benefit for patients with recurrent WHO grade IV glioma. A prospective phase II study is needed to further validate the efficacy of our therapeutic regimen.

Abstract
Background: Pseudoprogression (PsP) mimics true early progression (TeP) in conventional imaging, which poses a diagnostic challenge in glioblastoma (GBM) patients who undergo standard concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT). This study aimed to investigate whether perioperative markers could distinguish and predict PsP from TeP in de novo isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) wild-type GBM patients. Methods: New or progressive gadolinium-enhancing lesions that emerged within 12 weeks after CCRT were defined as early progression. Lesions that remained stable or spontaneously regressed were classified as PsP, otherwise persistently enlarged as TeP. Clinical, radiological, and molecular information were collected for further analysis. Patients in the early progression subgroup were divided into derivation and validation sets (7:3, according to operation date). Results: Among 234 consecutive cases enrolled in this retrospective study, the incidences of PsP, TeP, and neither patterns of progression (nP) were 26.1% (61/234), 37.6% (88/234), and 36.3% (85/234), respectively. In the early progression subgroup, univariate analysis demonstrated female (OR: 2.161, P = 0.026), gross total removal (GTR) of the tumor (OR: 6.571, P < 001), located in the frontal lobe (OR: 2.561, P = 0.008), non-subventricular zone (SVZ) infringement (OR: 10.937, P < 0.001), and methylated O-6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter (mMGMTp) (OR: 9.737, P < 0.001) were correlated with PsP, while GTR, non-SVZ infringement, and mMGMTp were further validated in multivariate analysis. Integrating quantitative MGMTp methylation levels from pyrosequencing, GTR, and non-SVZ infringement showed the best discriminative ability in the random forest model for derivation and validation set (AUC: 0.937, 0.911, respectively). Furthermore, a nomogram could effectively evaluate the importance of those markers in developing PsP (C-index: 0.916) and had a well-fitted calibration curve. Conclusion: Integrating those clinical, radiological, and molecular features provided a novel and robust method to distinguish PsP from TeP, which was crucial for subsequent clinical decision making, clinical trial enrollment, and prognostic assessment. By in-depth interrogation of perioperative markers, clinicians could distinguish PsP from TeP independent from advanced imaging.

Abstract
Regional acclimatisation and microbial interactions significantly influence the resilience of reef-building corals facing anthropogenic climate change, allowing them to adapt to environmental stresses. However, the connections between community structure and microbial interactions of the endemic coral microbiome and holobiont acclimatisation remain unclear. Herein, we used generation sequencing of internal transcribed spacer (ITS2) and 16S rRNA genes to investigate the microbiome composition (Symbiodiniaceae and bacteria) and associated potential interactions of endemic dominant coral holobionts (Pocillopora verrucosa and Turbinaria peltata) in the South China Sea (SCS). We found that shifts in Symbiodiniaceae and bacterial communities of P. verrucosa were associated with latitudinal gradient and climate zone changes, respectively. The C1 sub-clade consistently dominated the Symbiodiniaceae community in T. peltata; yet, the bacterial community structure was spatially heterogeneous. The relative abundance of the core microbiome among P. verrucosa holobionts was reduced in the biogeographical transition zone, while bacterial taxa associated with anthropogenic activity (Escherichia coli and Sphingomonas) were identified in the core microbiomes. Symbiodiniaceae and bacteria potentially interact in microbial co-occurrence networks. Further, increased bacterial, and Symbiodiniaceae α-diversity was associated with increased and decreased network complexity, respectively. Hence, Symbiodiniaceae and bacteria demonstrated different flexibility in latitudinal or climatic environmental regimes, which correlated with holobiont acclimatisation. Core microbiome analysis has indicated that the function of core bacterial microbiota might have changed in distinct environmental regimes, implying potential human activity in the coral habitats. Increased bacterial α diversity may lead to a decline in the stability of coral-microorganism symbioses, whereas rare Symbiodiniaceae may help to retain symbioses. Cladocopium, γ-proteobacteria, while α-proteobacteria may have been the primary drivers in the Symbiodiniaceae-bacterial interactions (SBIs). Our study highlights the association between microbiome shift in distinct environmental regimes and holobiont acclimatisation, while providing insights into the impact of SBIs on holobiont health and acclimatisation during climate change.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of speckle-type POZ protein (SPOP) on proliferation, apoptosis, migration and invasion of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and explore the potential mechanisms. OBJECTIVE Renal carcinoma cell lines (786-O, A704, and Caki-2) cultured in vitro were transfected with a SPOP-overexpressing plasmid, and the changes in proliferation of the cells were detected using colony formation and MTT assay; TUNEL assay was used to assess apoptosis of the cells. The changes in migration and invasion abilities of the cells were examined using wound healing assay and Transwell assay. The mRNA and protein levels of SPOP and c-Jun in the transfected cells were measured using real-time PCR and Western blotting. OBJECTIVE SPOP over-expression obviously promoted the proliferation, migration and invasion of 786-O, A704 and Caki-2 cells (P < 0.05). Compared with the control cells, 786-o and Caki-2 cells over-expressing SPOP exhibited significantly lowered apoptosis rates (P < 0.05). The results of real-time PCR demonstrated that the transfected cells did not show obvious changes in the mRNA level of c-Jun, but the protein expressions of SPOP and c-jun increased significantly as shown by Western blotting (P < 0.05). OBJECTIVE SPOP can promote proliferation, migration, and invasion and suppress apoptosis of renal carcinoma cells possibly by promoting the expression of c-Jun.

Abstract
Objectives: The mortality rate of sepsis remains very high. Metabolomic techniques are playing increasingly important roles in diagnosis and treatment in critical care medicine. The purpose of our research was to use untargeted metabolomics to identify and analyze the common differential metabolites among patients with sepsis with differences in their 7-day prognosis and blood PD-1 expression and analyze their correlations with environmental factors. Methods: Plasma samples from 18 patients with sepsis were analyzed by untargeted LC-MS metabolomics. Based on the 7-day prognoses of the sepsis patients or their levels of PD-1 expression on the surface of CD4+ T cells in the blood, we divided the patients into two groups. We used a combination of multidimensional and monodimensional methods for statistical analysis. At the same time, the Spearman correlation analysis method was used to analyze the correlation between the differential metabolites and inflammatory factors. Results: In the positive and negative ionization modes, 16 and 8 differential metabolites were obtained between the 7-day death and survival groups, respectively; 5 and 8 differential metabolites were obtained between the high PD-1 and low PD-1 groups, respectively. We identified three common differential metabolites from the two groups, namely, PC (P-18:0/14:0), 2-ethyl-2-hydroxybutyric acid and glyceraldehyde. Then, we analyzed the correlations between environmental factors and the common differences in metabolites. Among the identified metabolites, 2-ethyl-2-hydroxybutyric acid was positively correlated with the levels of IL-2 and lactic acid (Lac) (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively). Conclusions: These three metabolites were identified as common differential metabolites between the 7-day prognosis groups and the PD-1 expression level groups of sepsis patients. They may be involved in regulating the expression of PD-1 on the surface of CD4+ T cells through the action of related environmental factors such as IL-2 or Lac, which in turn affects the 7-day prognosis of sepsis patients.

Abstract
Some scleractinian corals exhibit high thermal adaptability to climate changes, although the mechanism of their adaptation is unclear. This study investigated the adaptability of scleractinian coral Pocillopora damicornis to thermally variable reef environments by applying a nanopore-based RNA sequencing method to characterize different transcription responses that promote heat tolerance of P. damicornis. We identified 1414 novel genes and optimized 6256 mis-annotated loci. Based on full-length transcriptome data, we identified complex alternative polyadenylation and alternative splicing events, which can improve our understanding of the genome annotation and gene structures of P. damicornis. Furthermore, we constructed differentially expressed lncRNA-mRNA co-expression networks, which may play a crucial role in the P. damicornis thermal adaptive response. KEGG function enrichment analysis revealed that P. damicornis from the high-temperature pool had a lower metabolic rate than that from the low-temperature pool. We hypothesize that metabolic readjustment, in the form of a lower metabolic rate, positively correlated with increased heat tolerance in P. damicornis in thermally variable reef environments. Our study provides novel insights into lncRNAs that promote thermally tolerance of scleractinian corals in the thermally variable reef environment, suggesting potential mechanisms for their adaptation to global warming in the future.

Abstract
Seven popular fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs) in synthetic marine aquaculture water were subject to sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) disinfection scenario to investigate their reaction kinetics and transformation during chlorination. Reactivity of each FQ to NaClO was following the order of ofloxacin (OFL) > enrofloxacin (ENR) > lomefloxacin (LOM) > ciprofloxacin (CIP) ~ norfloxacin (NOR) >> pipemedic acid (PIP), while flumequine did not exhibit reactivity. The coexisting chlorine ions and sulfate ions in the water slightly facilitated the oxidation of FQs by NaClO, while humic acid was inhibitable to their degradation. The bromide ions promoted degradation of CIP and LOM, but restrained oxidation of OFL and ENR. By analysis of liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), eight kinds of emerging brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs) caused by FQS were primarily identified in the chlorinated synthetic marine culture water. Through density functional theory calculation, the highest-occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) characteristic as well as the charge distribution of the FQs were obtained to clarify transformation mechanisms. Their formation involved decarboxylation, ring-opening/closure, dealkylation and halogenation. Chlorine substitution occurred on the ortho-position of FQs's N4 and bromine substitution occurred on C8 position. The piperazine ring containing tertiary amine was comparatively stable, while this moiety with a secondary amine structure would break down during chlorination. Additionally, logKow and logBAF of transformation products were calculated by EPI-SuiteTM to analyze their bioaccumulation. The values indicated that Br-DBPs are easier to accumulate in the aquatic organism relative to their chloro-analogues and parent compounds.

Abstract
β-Glucosidase is a microbial cellulose multienzyme that plays an important role in the regulation of the entire cellulose hydrolysis process, which is the rate-limiting step in bacterial carbon cycling in marine environments. Despite its importance in coral reefs, the diversity of β-glucosidase-producing bacteria, their genes, and enzymatic characteristics are poorly understood. In this study, 87 β-glucosidase-producing cultivable bacteria were screened from 6 genera of corals. The isolates were assigned to 21 genera, distributed among three groups: Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. In addition, metagenomics was used to explore the genetic diversity of bacterial β-glucosidase enzymes associated with scleractinian corals, which revealed that these enzymes mainly belong to the glycosidase hydrolase family 3 (GH3). Finally, a novel recombinant β-glucosidase, referred to as Mg9373, encompassing 670 amino acids and a molecular mass of 75.2 kDa, was classified as a member of the GH3 family and successfully expressed and characterized. Mg9373 exhibited excellent tolerance to ethanol, NaCl, and glucose. Collectively, these results suggest that the diversity of β-glucosidase-producing bacteria and genes associated with scleractinian corals is high and novel, indicating great potential for applications in the food industry and agriculture.

Abstract
The healthy status of corals in the isolated atolls of the central South China Sea (SCS) remains unclear. Symbiodiniaceae density (SD) can effectively reflect the thermal tolerance and health of hard corals. Here, the SDs of 238 samples from the Huangyan Atoll (HA) were analyzed. The results revealed significantly intergeneric and geomorphological differences in SD. Intergeneric variation may reflect that corals with high SD have stronger thermal tolerance. Geomorphic analysis showed that the SDs at the outer reef slope were higher than in the lagoon. Hydrodynamics and sea surface temperature were likely the main influencing factors. Most notably, corals in SCS HA had higher SDs than those at neighboring reefs, indicating that their thermal tolerance were strong, which may be related to HA's local upwelling. These results suggest that the HA has the potential to serve as a refuge for corals, but increasing human disturbance limit its function.

Abstract
Antibiotic residues in mariculture environments have been detected globally, while little information is available about their dynamic levels, source, behavior, and fate during the whole culture process. In this study, the dynamic occurrence, bioaccumulation, source, fate, and human dietary risk of 19 antibiotics were investigated in different breeding stages of mariculture ponds near the Maowei Sea, South China. Fourteen antibiotics, including three sulfonamides (SAs), five fluoroquinolones (FQs), three macrolides (MLs), and two chloramphenicols (CAPs), were detected in the mariculture ponds, with FQs being the most abundant antibiotics. Significant variations of antibiotic concentration occurred during the whole culture process. Severe weather, especially typhoons and rainstorms, resulted in the average highest levels of ∑19antibiotics (mean: 567 ng L-1) in mariculture ponds. The source apportionment estimated for the mariculture ponds showed that direct application was the primary source of antibiotics (91.2%). The antibiotics in mariculture ponds were mainly discharged through aquaculture wastewater (65.8%) and settling particles (33.8%). The estimated annual input of antibiotics into the Maowei Sea was 2.24 times higher through the two main rivers (48.0 kg a-1) than through the mariculture wastewater (24.1 kg a-1). The apparent bioaccumulation factors (ABAFs) confirmed that young and adult tilapia accumulated more sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and norfloxacin (NOX), respectively. The result from the estimated daily intakes suggested that the antibiotics in the seafood could not pose a risk to human health by dietary exposure assessment. CAPSULE: Big variation of antibiotic concentration occurred during the whole culture process in the mariculture farms, and the storm increased antibiotic application.

Abstract
Nephrotoxicity, the most important toxicity in high-dose methotrexate (MTX) therapy, is partly caused by the formation of crystal deposits in the kidney due to poor water solubility of MTX and its metabolites 7-hydroxy methotrexate (7-OH MTX), deoxyaminopteroic acid (DAMPA) and 7-hydroxy deoxyaminopteroic acid (7-OH DAMPA). Plasma MTX level-guided urine alkalinization, leucovorin rescue and glucarpidase detoxification are common strategies to overcome MTX-related nephrotoxicity. However, overestimation is a problem for MTX analysis by immunoassays due to the cross-reactivity of MTX metabolites (7-OH MTX and DAMPA). An UHPLC-MS/MS method for the simultaneous determination of MTX, 7-OH MTX, DAMPA and 7-OH DAMPA in human urine was developed, validated and applied in clinical practice. Samples were treated by one-step protein precipitation and analyzed within 3 min. The calibration range was 0.02 to 4 μmol/L for MTX and DAMPA, and 0.1 to 20 μmol/L for 7-OH MTX and 7-OH DAMPA. For all analytes, the intra-day and inter-day bias and imprecision were -8.0 to 7.6 and <9.0%, the internal standard normalized recovery and matrix factor were 92.34 to 109.49 and <20.68%. The plasma MTX and 7-OH MTX levels increased with the urine drug levels, age, serum creatinine and alanine transaminase, but urine could not replace blood for MTX monitoring due to their poor correlation (R2, 0.16 to 0.51). Dose-normalized urine and plasma MTX and 7-OH MTX levels were similar between different patient groups (urine pH <7 or ≥7). Due to the large inter-individual variance of the analytes levels in both plasma and urine, these findings should be treated with caution.

Abstract
Hydrodynamic factors have always been considered as the predominant factors determining the transportation of suspended particulate matter in tidal flats. However, whether such factors also affect the transportation of microplastics (MPs) in mangrove forests remains largely unknown. In our study, the extent to which the two most critical hydrodynamic factors (tidal range and current velocity) impact the distribution of MPs in mangrove sediments was evaluated. In the different zones of the mangrove forest, strong linear relationships were observed between the tidal current velocity and MPs content during both the flood and ebb tide periods (p = 0.002, R2 > 0.837). Similarly, in the same mangrove forest, the MPs content significantly differed, and a general increasing trend was found from the seaward boundary (ranging from 80 ± 16 item/kg to 1020 ± 89 item/kg) to the landward boundary (ranging from 520 ± 32 to 6040 ± 114 item/kg). The MPs growth rates showed obvious linear relationships with the tidal current velocity (p < 0.005, R2 > 0.905), but there were no relationships with the tidal range (p = 0.717). The results of this work highlight that tidal current velocity and tidal range should be taken into account when exploring the mechanisms of MPs distributions in mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract
Background This study was designed to explore the progression patterns of IDH-wildtype glioblastoma (GBM) at first recurrence after chemoradiotherapy. Methods Records from 247 patients who underwent progression after diagnosis of IDH-wildtype GBM was retrospectively reviewed. Progression patterns were classified as either local, distant, subependymal or leptomeningeal dissemination based on the preoperative and serial postoperative radiographic images. The clinical and molecular characteristics of different progression patterns were analyzed. Results A total of 186 (75.3%) patients had local progression, 15 (6.1%) patients had distant progression, 33 (13.3%) patients had subependymal dissemination, and 13 (5.3%) patients had leptomeningeal dissemination. The most favorable survival occurred in patients with local progression, while no significant difference of survival was found among patients with distant progression, subependymal or leptomeningeal dissemination who were thereby reclassified into non-local group. Multivariable analysis showed that chemotherapy was a protective factor for non-local progression, while gender of male, subventricular zone (SVZ) involvement and O6-methylguanine-DNA-methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation were confirmed as risk factors for non-local progression (P < 0.05). Based on the factors screened by multivariable analysis, a nomogram was constructed which conferred high accuracy in predicting non-local progression. Patients in non-local group could be divided into long- and short-term survivors who differed in the rates of SVZ involvement, MGMT promoter methylation and reirradiation (P < 0.05), and a nomogram integrating these factors showed high accuracy in predicting long-term survivors. Conclusion Patients harboring different progression patterns conferred distinct clinical and molecular characteristics. Our nomograms could provide theoretical references for physicians to make more personalized and precise treatment decisions.

Abstract
Effective vocal communication often requires the listener to recognize the identity of a vocalizer, and this recognition is dependent on the listener's ability to form auditory memories. We tested the memory capacity of a social songbird, the zebra finch, for vocalizer identities using conditioning experiments and found that male and female zebra finches can remember a large number of vocalizers (mean, 42) based solely on the individual signatures found in their songs and distance calls. These memories were formed within a few trials, were generalized to previously unheard renditions, and were maintained for up to a month. A fast and high-capacity auditory memory for vocalizer identity has not been demonstrated previously in any nonhuman animals and is an important component of vocal communication in social species.

Abstract
A series of flow-through reactor experiments were undertaken to assess the potential effect of porewater advection and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentration on benthic DIP dynamics in permeable sediments collected from the Weizhou Island, northern South China Sea. The flux of DIP ranged from -0.13 to 0.05 mmol m-2 h-1, and the reversal from DIP efflux to influx occurred when the DIP concentration reached a threshold. DIP release from the sediment into the seawater peaked at intermediate advection rate, which perhaps provide optimum conditions for DIP release related to CaCO3 dissolution. Phosphorus limitation in seawater could be relieved by DIP release from the sediment, and CaCO3-bound P in carbonate sands may play a major role in benthic DIP release and decrease in the molar nitrogen/phosphorus ratio in seawater around the Weizhou Island.

Abstract
Casestudy: Phaeohyphomycosis is a group of infections caused by pigmented, black, dematiaceous fungi and is responsible for cutaneous, superficial and deep mycoses, disseminated infection and brain abscesses. The primary agents involved include Alternaria spp., Exophiala spp. and Cladophialophora spp. Cerebral phaeohyphomycosis is particularly devastating with mortality rates as high as 70-80%. These fungi are becoming increasingly important opportunistic pathogens in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTR). We report a case of cerebral phaeohyphomycosis in a 65-year-old male with living donor kidney transplant for four years and has been maintained on immunosuppressive therapy with tacrolimus and prednisone. The patient presented with aphasia, frontal headache, loss of peripheral vision of right eye, and mental status change for three months due to several left- sided parieto-occipital brain abscesses. Left occipital abscess resection and parietal partial lobectomy were performed to reduce intracranial hypertension and to remove abscesses. Histopathological evaluation revealed brain abscess with pigmented fungal organisms with elongated, branched and septate. The pus aspirated during surgical excision of brain lesions grew black mold, identified as Cladophialophora bantiana. The patient’s neurological neurological condition had imporved after several weeks of combination antifungal therapy with posaconazole, liposomal amphotericin, and flucytosine. The lesions were initially suspected to be of tuberculous etiology, which was ruled out by histopathological examination. Such diagnostic dilemmas are common in the infection caused by Cladophialophora, which can cause treatment delay and death. Early diagnosis is therefore mandatory for the rapid treatment and survival of patients. As the number of SOTR increases, so does the incidence of fungal infections in that population. Surgery, along with antifungal therapy and a reduction in immunosuppression, are the cornerstones of treatment.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of the generic azacitidine in Chinese patients with higher-risk myelodysplastic syndromes(MDS). Methods: Between October 2013 and 2016, 72 patients were eligible for enrollment at 9 sites from China received generic subcutaneous azacitidine 75 mg·m(-2)·d(-1) for 7 days per 28-day cycle, for ≥6 cycles. Pharmacokinetic blood samples were collected on day 1 of a single-dose. Results: For each patient at cycle 6 or at the time of study discontinuation, whichever came first, the overall response rate, which included complete remission (CR)and partial remission(PR), was 6.9%(5/72), the rate of patients who had the best effect with CR or PR during the treatment was 12.5%(9/72). Patients who were dependent on red-blood-cell transfusions and platelet transfusions at baseline became transfusion independent were 46.3%(19/41)and 41.2% (7/17), respectively. The median time of treatment was 6 cycles, and the median OS was 16.1 months (95%CI 10.9-20.6 months). For 36 patients(50%)received treatment at ≥6 cycles, and the median OS was 22.3 months(95%CI 16.1- not evaluative). Most common grade Ⅲ-Ⅳ hematologic treatment-emergent adverse events were neutropenia(55%), leukopenia(47%), and thrombocytopenia(61%). Pharmacokinetic profiles were similar for generic and original azacitidine in Chinese patients. Conclusion: Generic azacitidine treatment was favorable and safe and can be used as a standard treatment for patients with higher-risk MDS.

Abstract
A novel Gram-stain-negative, non-endospore-forming, motile, and aerobic bacterial strain, M105T, was isolated from coral Porites lutea, and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Global alignment based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that M105T shares the highest sequence identity of 94.5 % with Aliikangiella marina GYP-15T. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) and average amino acid identity (AAI) between M105T and A. marina GYP-15T was 69.8 and 71.6 %, respectively. On the basis of the results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic, phylogenomic, and comparative genomic analyses, it is concluded that M105T should represent a novel species in the genus Aliikangiella, for which the name Aliikangiella coralliicola sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is M105T (=MCCC 1K03773T= KCTC 72442T). Furthermore, the family Kangiellaceae was classified into two families on the basis of phylogenetic, phylogenomic, polar lipid profile and motility variations. The novel family Pleioneaceae fam. nov. is proposed to accommodate the genera Aliikangiella and Pleionea.

Environmental exposure to organophosphate esters (OPEs) continues to be a concern. Little is known about their bioaccumulation and trophodynamics, especially in tropical food webs. This study collected seawater and fifteen types of organism from a tropical ecosystem, South China Sea, to investigate the species-specific compositional, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer of OPEs. The total concentrations of 11 target OPEs (ng/g dw) in the organisms decreased with the increase of their trophic levels in the order: phytoplankton (922) > zooplankton (660) > oysters (309) > crabs (225) > coral tissues (202) > fishes (58.2). The composition profiles (relative abundances) of OPEs were different among the species of organisms, which is likely affected by metabolism and the physicochemical property of OPEs. The trophic biomagnification of tripentyl phosphate (TPTP) in the pelagic food web was unexpected and requires further investigation. The trophic magnification factors (TMFs) of OPEs were generally lower in this tropical aquatic food web than in temperate and frigid aquatic food web. Our analysis suggests that there is a significant positive linear correlation between latitude and TMF. Intakes of OPEs through the consumption of the seafood involved in this work does not pose health risk to adults.

Abstract
A novel Gram-stain-negative, non-endospore-forming, non-motile, aerobic bacterium (strain R33T) was isolated from coral Porites lutea and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. The G+C content was 44.5 mol%. The only detected respiratory quinone was menaquinone 6 (MK-6). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 and iso-C15 : 1 ω6c. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and two unidentified lipids. Global alignment based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain R33T shares the highest sequence identity of 93.2 % with Muriicola marianensis A6B8T in the family Flavobacteriaceae. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain R33T forms a distinct branch in a stable clade comprising strain R33T and members of the genera Muriicola, Robiginitalea, Eudoraea and Zeaxanthinibacter. The phylogenomic analysis also supported this 16S rRNA gene-based phylogenetic result. Comparative genomic analysis indicated that strain R33T is rich in AraC-type DNA-binding domain-containing protein-coding genes, which means the regulation of carbon utilization is very complex. Low 16S rRNA gene identity, different polar lipids and/or cellular fatty acid profiles could readily distinguish strain R33T from any validly published type strains. Therefore, strain R33T is suggested to represent a new species in a new genus, for which the name Poritiphilus flavus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R33T (=MCCC 1K03853T=KCTC 72443T).

Abstract
Biodegradable porous magnesium (Mg) scaffolds are promising for application in the regeneration of critical-sized bone defects. Although additive manufacturing (AM) carries the promise of offering unique opportunities to fabricate porous Mg scaffolds, current attempts to apply the AM approach to fabricating Mg scaffolds have encountered some crucial issues, such as those related to safety in operation and to the difficulties in composition control. In this paper, we present a room-temperature extrusion-based AM method for the fabrication of topologically ordered porous Mg scaffolds. It is composed of three steps, namely (i) preparing a Mg powder loaded ink with desired rheological properties, (ii) solvent-cast 3D printing (SC-3DP) of the ink to form scaffolds with 0 °/ 90 °/ 0 ° layers, and (iii) debinding and sintering to remove the binder in the ink and then get Mg powder particles bonded by applying a liquid-phase sintering strategy. A rheological analysis of the prepared inks with 54, 58 and 62 vol% Mg powder loading was performed to reveal their viscoelastic properties. Thermal-gravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), carbon/sulfur analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated the possibilities of debinding and sintering at one single step for fabricating pure Mg scaffolds with high fidelity and densification. The resulting scaffolds with high porosity contained hierarchical and interconnected pores. This study, for the first time, demonstrated that the SC-3DP technique presents unprecedented possibilities to fabricate Mg-based porous scaffolds that have the potential to be used as a bone-substituting material. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Biodegradable porous magnesium scaffolds are promising for application in the regeneration of critical-sized bone defects. The judicious chosen of formulated binder system allowed for the negligible binder residue after debinding and the short-time liquid-phase sintering strategy led to a great success in sintering pure magnesium scaffolds. The resulting scaffolds with hierarchical and interconnected pores have great potential to be used as a bone-substituting material.

Abstract
Field ecological observations indicate that scleractinian coral exposed to early thermal stress are likely to develop higher tolerance to subsequent heat stress. The causes of this phenomenon, however, remain enigmatic. To unravel the mechanisms underlying the increased heat tolerance, we applied different thermal treatments to the scleractinian coral Acropora pruinosa and studied the resulting differences in appearance, physiological index, Symbiodiniaceae and bacterial communities, and transcriptome response. We found that early heat stress improved the thermal tolerance of the coral holobiont. After thermal acclimation, the community structure and symbiotic bacterial diversity in the microbiota were reorganized, whereas those of Symbiodiniaceae remained stable. RNA-seq analysis revealed that the downregulated coral host genes were mainly involved in pathways relating to metabolism, particularly the nitrogen metabolism pathway. This indicates that thermal acclimation led to decrease in the metabolism level in the coral host, which might be a self-protection mechanism. We suggest that thermal acclimation may increase scleractinian coral thermal tolerance by slowing host metabolism, altering the dominant bacterial population, and increasing bacterial diversity. This study offers new insights into the adaptive potential of scleractinian coral to heat stress from global warming.

Abstract
Recent changes to the guidelines for screening and early diagnosis of lung cancer have increased the interest in preserving post-radiotherapy lung function. Current investigational approaches are based on spatially mapping functional regions and generating regional avoidance plans that preferentially spare highly ventilated/perfused lung. A potentially critical, yet overlooked, aspect of functional avoidance is radiation injury to peripheral airways, which serve as gas conduits to and from functional lung regions. Dose redistribution based solely on regional function may cause irreparable damage to the 'supply chain'. To address this deficiency, we propose the functionally weighted airway sparing (FWAS) method. FWAS (i) maps the bronchial pathways to each functional sub-lobar lung volume; (ii) assigns a weighting factor to each airway based on the relative contribution of the sub-volume to overall lung function; and (iii) creates a treatment plan that aims to preserve these functional pathways. To evaluate it, we used four cases from a retrospective cohort of SAbR patients treated for lung cancer. Each patient's airways were auto-segmented from a diagnostic-quality breath-hold CT using a research virtual bronchoscopy software. A ventilation map was generated from the planning 4DCT to map regional lung function. For each terminal airway, as resolved by the segmentation software, the total ventilation within the sub-lobar volume supported by that airway was estimated and used as a function-based weighting factor. Upstream airways were weighted based on the cumulative volumetric ventilation supported by corresponding downstream airways. Using a previously developed model for airway radiosensitivity, dose constraints were determined for each airway corresponding to a <5% probability of airway collapse. Airway dose constraints, ventilation scores, and clinical dose constraints were input to a swarm optimization-based inverse planning engine to create a 3D conformal SAbR plan (CRT). The FWAS plans were compared to the patients' prescribed CRT clinical plans and the inverse-optimized clinical plans. Depending on the size and location of the tumour, the FWAS plan showed superior preservation of ventilation due to airflow preservation through open pathways (i.e. cumulative ventilation score from the sub-lobar volumes of open pathways). Improvements ranged between 3% and 23%, when comparing to the prescribed clinical plans, and between 3% and 35%, when comparing to the inverse-optimized clinical plans. The three plans satisfied clinical requirements for PTV coverage and OAR dose constraints. These initial results suggest that by sparing pathways to high-functioning lung subregions it is possible to reduce post-SAbR loss of respiratory function.

Abstract
Relatively high-latitude waters are supposed as a refuge for corals under ocean warming. A systematic assessment of the Weizhou Island reef in the northern South China Sea, a relatively high-latitude region, shows that the ecosystem restoration index decreased from 0.96 to 0.62 during the period between 1990 and 2015. Although the biotic community, supporting services, and regulating services remained at good or very good states, the provisioning services, cultural services, and especially habitat structure deteriorated to very poor or moderate states. Gray relational analysis showed that these ecological declines exhibited a strong relationship with human pressures from tourism activities and the petrochemical industry. The recoveries of the biotic community and supporting services that benefited from wintertime warming appeared to be partly offset by intensive human pressures. The long-term effects on ecosystem structure and functions suggest that anthropogenic disturbances have impaired the possibility of this area serving as a potential thermal refuge for reef-building corals in the South China Sea. This study thus provides an integrated approach for assessing the adaptive responses of coral reef ecosystems to climate change and local human activities.

Abstract
As emerging pollutants, the occurrence and risks of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in mariculture farms should be concerned; however, information is limited. Beibu Gulf is one of the essential mariculture zones in China. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of OPEs in mariculture farms of the Beibu Gulf, their phase distribution and bioaccumulation among sediment, organisms (shrimp, crab, and oyster), water, and feed. Human exposure to OPEs through seafood consumption was also assessed. The total concentrations of the 11 target OPEs (∑11OPEs) in the water samples ranged 32.9-227 ng L-1. It was significantly higher in water from the culture ponds (mean 122 ng L-1) than in water from the estuaries and nearshore areas (mean 51.1 ng L-1) (nonparametric test, p < 0.05). ∑11OPEs in the feeds averaged 46.0 (range 21.7-84.5) ng g-1 dw, which is similar to the level in the organism samples (mean 55.5, range 21.3-138 ng g-1 dw) and 4.4 times higher than that in the sediment (mean 10.9, range 35-22.1 ng g-1 dw). The ∑11OPEs released from the feeds to the culture ponds was estimated to be 49 μg m-2 per three-month period. In the aquaculture ponds, the sediment-water distribution coefficient (log KOC), and the bioaccumulation factors from the water (log BWAFs) or the feed (log BFAFs) to the organisms, depend linearly on the hydrophobicity (log KOW) of OPEs. The log BWAFs and log BFAFs increased with increasing log KOW within the log KOW range of 1-7. The human exposure to OPEs through consumption of shrimp, crab, and oysters from the mariculture farms does not pose a health risk at present.

Abstract
Laboratory studies demonstrated that the mussels were good model organisms in revealing microplastics (MPs) uptake and toxicity. However, only limited field study data on the MPs in benthic marine mesoherbivores collected from mangrove forests are currently available. In this study, the MPs in the snails (Ellobium chinense) organs, rather than the shell, from a mangrove forest were dominant fraction (maximum reaching to 60%). Unexpectedly, no significant linear relationships were found between the levels of MPs in the organs of the snails and the levels in the sediment/tidal water. Further studies were done to explore the sources of the MPs in snail organs. MPs in snail organs at both the landward (interior) and seaward (exterior) zones mainly origin from the pore water. Moreover, the MPs found in the snails showed no relevance to the particulate matter (PM) collected from pore water. The findings reported here imply that both the MPs and PM in pore water affect the extent of MPs enter into the organs of benthic marine mesoherbivores collected from mangrove forest.

Abstract
Coral species display varying susceptibilities to biotic or abiotic stress. To address the causes underlying this phenomenon, we profiled the Symbiodiniaceae clade type, bacterial communities and coral transcriptome responses in Pavona decussata and Acropora pruinosa, two species displaying different environmental tolerances in the Weizhou Island. We found that C1 was the most dominant Symbiodiniaceae subclade, with no difference detected between A. pruinosa and P. decussata. Nevertheless, P. decussata exhibited higher microbial diversity and significantly different community structure compared with that of A. pruinosa. Transcriptome analysis revealed that coral genes with significantly high expression in P. decussata were mostly related to immune and stress-resistance responses, whereas, those with significantly low expression were metabolism-related. We postulate that the higher tolerance of P. decussata as compared with that of A. pruinosa is the result of several traits, such as higher microbial diversity, different dominant bacteria, higher immune and stress-resistant response, and lower metabolic rate.

Abstract
Global warming has degraded coral reef ecosystems worldwide. Some corals develop thermal tolerance by associating with heat-tolerant Symbiodiniaceae. Here, we studied the mechanisms surrounding the dispersal, genetic variation and symbionts interaction of heat-tolerant Durusdinium trenchii across 13° latitudes in the South China Sea (SCS), to explore the possible mechanisms underlying these changes. Our results showed that Durusdinium trenchii are widely distributed in the seawater from the SCS. Our analyses of microsatellite loci revealed that D. trenchii has a high genetic diversity in the SCS; STRUCTURE analysis indicated that D. trenchii can be divided into four populations within the SCS; There exist positive correlations between genetic variation and geographic isolation, average sea surface temperature (SST) and variations in SST. Network modelling inferences showed that D. trenchii is a key species in the Symbiodiniaceae communities in the tropical SCS and contributes the greatest number of co-exclusion relationships. These results indicated that D. trenchii can affect the rare Symbiodiniaceae community. The long lifespan and the monsoon-driven ocean currents have shaped the wide distribution of D. trenchii. But low SST limits the ability of D. trenchii to establish stable symbioses with coral in the subtropical habitats. Geographical isolation and SST have shaped significant genetic variation of D.trenchii around the SCS. Our data reveals the biogeography and genetic population characteristics of D. trenchii in the Indo-Pacific region, and suggests that heat-tolerance and high genetic diversity of D. trenchii aid the corals with their adaptation to climate change.

Abstract
Coral reef ecosystems cannot operate normally without an effective nitrogen cycle. For oligotrophic coral reef areas, coral-associated diazotrophs are indispensable participants in the nitrogen cycle. However, the distribution of these diazotrophs and the correlation with the physical and chemical variables of the surrounding seawater remain unclear. To this end, 68 scleractinian coral colonies were sampled from 6 coral reef areas with different environmental variables in the South China Sea to investigate the composition of associated diazotrophs based on nifH gene amplification using high-throughput sequencing. The six coral reefs can be clearly divided into two types (fringing reefs and island reefs), are affected by varying degrees of human activities and are located at different latitudes from 9°20’06”N to 22°34’55”N with different seawater temperatures. Alpha- and beta-diversity analyses showed that the distribution of diazotrophs among coral reefs exhibited significant geographical fluctuations (p ≤ 0.05) and non-significant interspecific fluctuations (p > 0.05). The predominant bacterial phyla included Proteobacteria, Chlorobi, Cyanobacteria, and two unclassified phyla. Chlorobi exhibited a relative abundance of 47–96% in coral samples from the high-latitude Daya Bay fringing reef affected by eutrophication. Unclassified bacteria II, with a relative abundance of 28–87%, was found in all coral samples from the midlatitude Luhuitou fringing reef affected by eutrophication. However, unclassified bacteria I and Proteobacteria dominated (>80% relative abundance) in most of the coral samples from the Weizhou Island fringing reef, which is far from land, and three island reefs (Huangyan Island, Xinyi Reef, and Sanjiao Reef) at relatively low latitudes. At the genus level, some core diazotrophs were found in different coral sample groups. In addition, correlation analysis with various environmental variables revealed that the variables were positively or negatively correlated with different diazotrophic genera. Coral-associated diazotrophs were common among coral individuals. However, their composition was closely related to the different environmental variables. These results provide insights into the geographical distribution characteristics of coral-associated diazotrophs and their evolutionary trends in response to environmental change in the South China Sea.

Abstract
Triethylamine (TEA), a typical kind of volatile organic compound, is widely used as an industrial solvent, which is a threat to environment and human health. In this paper, a novel In2O3 nanocube gas sensing material with high sensing performances was synthesized through a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. The gas sensing test results are satisfactory such that the single phase of In2O3 nanocubes even exhibits a quite higher response of 12-10 ppm of TEA at a lower temperature (180 °C) than many conventional In2O3-based complexes and maintains high consistency in morphology and stability after the consecutive tests of 2 months. This work provides a facile and quite effective gas sensing material for TEA gas monitoring with high sensitivity and stability and good selectivity at lower working temperature that can be prepared in batch and further used as templates.

Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, aerobic, curved rod-shaped bacterium, designed strain R142T, was isolated from a coralline algae Tricleocarpa sp. in the Beibu Gulf, China. Optimal growth occurred with 0-0.5 % (w/v) NaCl, at 25 °C and at pH 8. Global alignment based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain R142T shared 93.8 % similarity with its closest type strain, Pseudomaricurvus alkylphenolicus KU14GT. Phylogenetic analyses showed that strain R142T forms a distinct branch alongside Maricurvus nonylphenolicus KU41ET, Pseudoteredinibacter isoporae SW-11T, Pseudomaricurvus alkylphenolicus KU14GT, Pseudomaricurvus alcaniphilus MEBiC06469T and Aestuariicella hydrocarbonica SM-6T. The major polar lipids of strain R142T were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The primary cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0, C16 : 1ω7c, C18 : 1ω7c, C18 : 0 and C14 : 0. The genome DNA G+C ratio was 56.4 mol%. The only detected respiratory quinone was ubiquinone 8. The low 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and differences in cellular fatty acids readily distinguished strain R142T from all validly published type strains. Strain R142T is therefore suggested to represent a novel species of a new genus, for which the name Exilibacterium tricleocarpae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Exilibacterium tricleocarpae is R142T (=MCCC 1K03816T=KCTC 72138T).

Abstract
A Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, aerobic, motile, curved rod-shaped bacterium, designed strain R148T was isolated from a coralline algae Tricleocarpa sp. collected from Weizhou island, PR China. The optimal growth of R148T occurred at 25 °C, pH 8-9 in the presence of 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl on the basis of amended marine broth 2216. The genomic DNA G+C content was 59.5 mol%. The only detected respiratory quinone was Q-10. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, and three unidentified ninhydrin-positive lipids. The major cellular fatty acids were C18 : 1ω7c, C16 : 1ω7c, C19 : 0cyclo 9, 10 DMA and C18 : 0. The results of 16S rRNA gene-based global alignment indicated that the closest neighbour of strain R148T was Pelagibius litoralis DSM 21314T (93.1 % similarity), the second is Limibacillus halophilus KCTC 42420T (92.2 %). The results of phylogenetic analysis indicated that R148T forms a distinct branch in the robust clade of R148T and P. litoralis DSM 21314T, while the taxonomic position of this clade in the family Rhodospirillaceae is ambiguous among phylogenetic approaches. The low 16S rRNA gene similarity and distinct polar lipid and cellular fatty acid profile could readily distinguish R148T from closely related type strains. So R148T is suggested to represent a novel species in a novel genus, for which the name Denitrobaculum tricleocarpae gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is R148T (=MCCC 1K03781T=KCTC 72137T).

Abstract
Protease-producing bacteria play a vital role in degrading organic nitrogen in marine environments. However, the diversity of the bacteria and extracellular proteases has seldom been addressed, especially in communities of coral reefs. In this study, 136 extracellular protease-producing bacterial strains were isolated from seven genera of scleractinian corals from Luhuitou fringing reef, and their protease types were characterized. The massive coral had more cultivable protease-producing bacteria than branching or foliose corals. The abundance of cultivable protease-producing bacteria reached 106 CFU g−1 of coral. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolates were assigned to 24 genera, from which 20 corresponded to the phyla Firmicutes and Proteobacteria. Bacillus and Fictibacillus were retrieved from all coral samples. Moreover, Vibrio and Pseudovibrio were most prevalent in massive or foliose coral Platygyra and Montipora. In contrast, 11 genera were each identified in only one isolate. Nearly all the extracellular proteases from the bacteria were serine proteases or metalloproteases; 45.83% of isolates also released cysteine or aspartic proteases. These proteases had different hydrolytic ability against different substrates. This study represents a novel insight on the diversity of cultivable protease-producing bacteria and their extracellular proteases in scleractinian corals.

Abstract
Coral tissue thickness (CTT) is an effective indicator of the adaptability of corals to environmental stress, but the relationships between the spatial and intergeneric variation of coral tissue across latitudes and tolerance to environmental stress are not well understood. To investigate this, the CTT of 768 specimens of 10 typical coral genera and surrounding seawater parameters were measured in six coral reef regions (CRRs) across the 9-22°N latitudes in the South China Sea (SCS). Results showed significant differences in CTT between different genera of corals and CRRs. CTTs were significantly higher in the northern SCS than in the southern SCS. There was also notable intergeneric variation, with the abundance of branching Acropora and foliaceous Pavona being significantly lower than that of massive Porites, Galaxea, Favia, Favites, Hydnophora, Platygyra, and encrusting Montipora, Psammocora across these CRRs. Redundancy analysis showed that dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), sea surface temperature (SST), turbidity, and transparency were the main factors affecting CTT. Overall CTT, irrespective of genus, was significantly positively correlated with DIN, SRP, and latitude, but was significantly negatively correlated with transparency and SST. Further analysis suggested that corals in the southern SCS are mainly threatened by thermal stress, whereas in the northern SCS, corals have often suffered from destructive anthropogenic disturbance. Although seawater conditions were normal during on-site investigation, a large number of branching corals (e.g., Acropora corals) have been lost in the last several decades due to destructive human activity. In contrast, massive and encrusting corals may have higher energy reserves and photo-protective capacities due to their thicker tissues, and consequently have higher tolerance to environmental stress. Therefore, the coral communities of the SCS have gradually been transformed from branching corals to massive/encrusting corals.

Abstract
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is a highly lethal cancer, and epidemiological studies have suggested positive associations with iron and red meat intake. Rare mutations in genes involved in the hepcidin-regulating pathway are known to cause iron overload and hemochromatosis. We hypothesize that the hepcidin-regulating pathway as characterized by common variants from genome-wide association studies will be associated with PDAC. Methods: We conducted a large pathway-based meta-analysis of the hepcidin-regulating genes using the summary based adaptive rank truncated product (sARTP) method in 9,253 PDAC cases and 12,525 controls of European descent from the Pancreatic Cancer Cohort (PanScan) and the Pancreatic Cancer Case-Control (PANC4) consortia. Our analysis included 11 hepcidin-regulating genes (BMP2, BMP6, FTH1, FTL, HAMP, HFE, HJV, NRF2, SLC40A1, TFR1, TFR2) and adjacent genomic regions (20 kb upstream and downstream) with a total of 412 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We also conducted the sARTP with four iron status biomarkers (serum iron, transferrin, transferrin saturation, and ferritin, n = 23,986) using summary statistics from previous GWAS studies (Benyamin, et al. 2014) to examine if the hepcidin-regulating genes were also associated with these iron traits. The sARTP method combines SNP-level associations across variants in a gene or a pathway. Signals from up to five of the most associated SNPs for each gene studied were accumulated. Results: The hepcidin-regulating pathway was significantly associated with PDAC (P-value = 0.002) with the HJV, TFR2, and TFR1 genes contributing the most to the association (gene level P-values = 0.001, 0.014, and 0.019, respectively). The pathway associations were more significant in women than men. This pathway was also significantly associated with the four biomarkers of iron metabolism (P-values <1.5 × 10–7). Conclusions: Our results support that genetic susceptibility related to the hepcidin-regulating pathway is associated with PDAC and a potential role of iron metabolism in pancreatic carcinogenesis. Further studies are needed to evaluate the modifying effect of iron-rich foods and genetic susceptibility of this pathway and PDAC risk.

Abstract
As a key environmental parameter to induce radiation dose and effect on non-human species, radioactivity level is rarely evaluated in typical ecosystems of coral reefs, mangroves, and hydrothermal vents. In this study, naturally occurring radionuclides (238U, 226Ra, 228Ra, and 40K) in carbonate, silicate, and sulfide sediments collected from coral reefs, mangroves, and hydrothermal vents were simultaneously measured using high purity germanium (HPGe) γ spectrometry. Radioactivity levels and radionuclide fingerprints (226Ra/238U and 228Ra/226Ra) were interpreted and explored for tracking sources and formation processes of marine sediments in distinct marine ecosystems. Additionally, ionizing radiation dose rate on representative marine biotas (mollusc-bivalve, crustacean, polychaete worm, benthic fish, and pelagic fish) was evaluated using the ERICA tool with an increasing rank in coral reefs < mangroves < hydrothermal vents. Polychaete worm received the highest radiation dose relative to other marine biotas. We also emphasized the dominant contribution of 210Po to total radiation dose rate on marine biotas.

Abstract
The ultraviolet/peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS) system was used to degrade ofloxacin (OFL) in fresh water, synthetic marine aquaculture water and synthetic seawater. The comparison of the reaction degradation rate constants proved that the order of reaction rate was the following: synthetic seawater (0.77 min-1) > synthetic marine aquaculture water (0.74 min-1) > freshwater (0.30 min-1). Bromide (Br-) and bicarbonate (HCO3-) promote the degradation of OFL, whereas chloride (Cl-) inhibits the degradation. The piperazine ring of OFL was the main reactive group, and atoms N1, C6, C7 and N2 were identified as the reaction sites. Based on the intermediate and final products, the possible degradation pathways of OFL in the three kinds of water were proposed. Additionally, during the UV/PDS treatment of synthetic marine aquaculture water containing Cl- and Br-, the oxidation products of OFL showed a slight toxicity to Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa) and Priacanthus tayenus (P. tayenus). The maximum growth inhibition rate of the products to C. pyrenoidosa was 9.72%. The products also caused liver cells of P. tayenus to be damaged and reduced the species richness and diversity of intestinal microorganism. Nevertheless, compared with the products degraded by traditional disinfection methods using NaClO, the biological toxicities were much lower. UV/PDS can be used for seawater as a new alternative disinfection method.

Abstract
Coral reef fishes are about 10% of commercial fishes worldwide. Their pollution is close to human's health. Antibiotics are one group of emerging organic pollutants in the marine environment. However, little data is available on the bioaccumulation and dietary risks of antibiotics in coral reef fish from the South China Sea (SCS) or any other parts of the global coral reef environment. In this study, we examined 19 antibiotics in 18 species of coral reef fish collected from coastal and offshore regions in the SCS. The results revealed that 17 antibiotics were detected in the fishes. Their average concentrations ranged from 1.3 × 10-5 to 7.9 × 10-1 ng/g ww, which were at the lower end of the global range about antibiotic levels in fish. The average total antibiotic concentrations (∑19ABs) were significantly higher in the offshore fish (1.2 ng/g ww) than in the coastal fish (0.16 ng/g ww). Different fish species or the protection of mucus produced by coastal fish at severe environmental stress may cause the differences. Fluoroquinolones (FQs) accounted for 89% and 74% of the average ∑19ABs in the offshore and coastal fish, respectively. It may relate to their relative high aqueous solubility and adsorption ability to particles. The log BAFs (bioaccumulation factors) of the antibiotics ranged from -0.34 to 4.12. Norfloxacin, dehydrated erythromycin (DETM), and roxithromycin were bioaccumulative in some offshore fish samples with their log BAFs higher than 3.7. The results of trophic magnification factors (TMFs) demonstrated that DETM underwent significant trophic dilution while enoxacin underwent trophic magnification in the food web of coral reef fishes. The estimated daily intakes of antibiotics via fish consumption by China residents ranged from 2.0 × 10-4 to 2.7 ng/kg weight body/day, which was 3 to 8 orders of magnitude lower than the respective acceptable daily intakes.

Abstract
Fishery activities are an important source of microplastic pollution in coastal areas but have received little attention. The Beibu Gulf, a traditional fishing ground of China and the China-Indo Peninsula, was selected in this study, and the focus was on the impacts of fishery activities on the horizontal distribution of microplastics in sediment. The results showed that the dominant contaminants (polypropylene fibers and polyethylene fibers) might originate from the abrasion of fishing gear and contributed to 61.6% of the total abundance of microplastics in surface sediment. The abundance of polypropylene fibers and polyethylene fibers exhibited a strong correlation (R2 = 0.8586, p = 0.015) with values of fishery yields of different districts, which highlighted the effects of different fishery activities on microplastic contamination in marine sediment. Microplastics could be "hidden" in deep sediment to a depth of 60 cm. The estimated storage of microplastics in deep sediment (185 tons) was 5 times that in surface sediment. The assessment of microplastic storage worldwide might be underestimated because most previous studies only examined surface sediment. The abundance distribution and size distribution of microplastics in the sediment core suggested long-term burial of microplastics in deep sediment. Bioturbation might be responsible for the vertical transport of microplastics, leading to "fresh microplastics" preservation in "old sediment".

Abstract
Coral reefs have suffered degradation from climate change and water quality deterioration. Studies have shown that PAHs are present widely in some coastal seawater and coral tissues. However, no studies have focused on the PAHs in coastal coral mucus and offshore coral tissues. Targeting the South China Sea, this study for the first time investigated the occurrence, tissue-mucus partitioning, and bioaccumulation of PAHs in coastal and offshore corals. The tissue and mucus of the corals were processed separately. The results indicated that the total concentration of 15 of the 16 PAHs that are prioritized by U.S. EPA (excluding naphthalene) (∑15PAHs) was significantly higher in the coastal tissues (173 ± 314 ng g-1 dw) than in the offshore tissues (71 ± 109 ng g-1 dw), as well as in coastal seawater (196 ± 96 ng L-1) than in the offshore water (54 ± 9 ng L-1). ∑15PAHs is two orders of magnitude higher in the mucus (3200 ± 6470 ng g-1 dw) than in the tissues (128 ± 43 ng g-1 dw). By average, 29% of ∑15PAHs were accumulated in the mucus. The results suggest that mucus plays an important role in the bioaccumulation of PAHs by corals from ambient seawater.

Abstract
Fluoroacetic acid (FAcOH) was once a highly toxic rodenticide widely used in the world. In the past, studies on the toxicity of FAcOH have focused on animal experiments. The toxicity of FAcOH to humans and the changes of FAcOH in plasma have not been studied. Therefore, the present study aimed to describe the changes of plasma FAcOH concentrations, hematological, and biochemical characteristics in patients with FAcOH intoxication. According to clinical symptoms, 68 patients from the emergency department were divided into different groups: convulsion group, unconsciousness group, death group, and control groups. Plasma FAcOH concentrations, hematological, and biochemical parameters were investigated. Results demonstrated that patients in the convulsion group and the unconsciousness group had a significant increase (p < 0.01) in the level of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), creatine kinase MB (CKMB), glucose (GLU), and white blood cell count (WBC) and a significant decrease (p < 0.01) in serum potassium compared with the control group, respectively. Moreover, patients in the death group had a significant increase (p < 0.01) in the level of NSE, CKMB, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, GLU, and WBC and a significant decrease (p < 0.01) in serum potassium and total calcium compared with the survival group. The concentrations of FAcOH in plasma in the convulsion group, the unconsciousness group, and the death group were 72.31 ± 42.29, 118.33 ± 55.41, and 163.78 ± 43.32 μg/mL, respectively. These changes and the plasma FAcOH concentrations may increase our understanding of the toxicity of FAcOH to humans and may help doctors to judge the clinical prognosis of patients with FAcOH intoxication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Salmonella is one of the most important enteric pathogenic bacteria that threatened poultry health. AIMS This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella isolates in goose farms. METHODS A total of 244 cloacal swabs were collected from goose farms to detect Salmonella in Northeast China. Antimicrobial susceptibility, and resistance gene distribution of Salmonella isolates were investigated. RESULTS Twenty-one Salmonella isolates were identified. Overall prevalence of Salmonella in the present study was 8.6%. Among the Salmonella isolates, the highest resistance frequencies belonged to amoxicillin (AMX) (85.7%), tetracycline (TET) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (SXT) (81%), followed by chloramphenicol (CHL) (76.2%), florfenicol (FLO) (71.4%), kanamycin (KAN) (47.6%), and gentamycin (GEN) (38.1%). Meanwhile, only 4.8% of the isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin (CIP) and cefotaxime (CTX). None of the isolates was resistant to cefoperazone (CFP) and colistin B (CLB). Twenty isolates (95%) were simultaneously resistant to at least two antimicrobials. Ten resistance genes were detected among which the bla TEM-1, cmlA, aac(6')-Ib-cr, sul1, sul2, sul3, and mcr-1.1 were the most prevalent, and presented in all 21 isolates followed by tetB (20/21), qnrB (19/21), and floR (15/21). CONCLUSION Results indicated that Salmonella isolates from goose farms in Northeast China exhibited multi-drug resistance (MDR), harboring multiple antimicrobial resistance genes. Our results will be useful to design prevention and therapeutic strategies against Salmonella infection in goose farms.
