Abstract
We present single crystal neutron diffraction measurements on multiferroic LuFe(2)O(4). Magnetic reflections are observed below transitions at 240 and 175 K indicating that the magnetic interactions in LuFe(2)O(4) are three-dimensional in character. The magnetic structure is refined as a ferrimagnetic spin configuration below the 240 K transition. Below 175 K a significant broadening of the magnetic peaks is observed along with the buildup of a diffuse component to the magnetic scattering.

Manifestations of broken symmetry: the surface phases of Ca(2-x)SrxRuO4. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2008; 100:066102. Abstract
The surface structural phases of Ca(2-x)SrxRuO4 are investigated using quantitative low energy electron diffraction. The broken symmetry at the surface enhances the structural instability against the RuO6 rotational distortion while diminishing the instability against the RuO6 tilt distortion occurring within the bulk crystal. As a result, suppressed structural and electronic surface phase transition temperatures are observed, including the appearance of an inherent Mott metal-to-insulator transition for x=0.1 and possible modifications of the surface quantum critical point near x(c) approximately 0.5.

Magnetic and orbital ordering in the spinel MnV2O4. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2008; 100:066404. Abstract
Neutron inelastic scattering and diffraction techniques have been used to study the MnV2O4 spinel system. Our measurements show the existence of two transitions to long-range ordered ferrimagnetic states, the first collinear and the second noncollinear. The lower temperature transition, characterized by development of antiferromagnetic components in the basal plane, is accompanied by a tetragonal distortion and the appearance of a gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum. The low-temperature noncollinear magnetic structure has been definitively resolved. Taken together, the crystal and magnetic structures indicate a staggered ordering of the V d orbitals. The anisotropy gap is a consequence of unquenched V orbital angular momentum.

Abstract
Mott transitions, which are metal-insulator transitions (MITs) driven by electron-electron interactions, are usually accompanied in bulk by structural phase transitions. In the layered perovskite Ca(1.9)Sr(0.1)RuO4, such a first-order Mott MIT occurs in the bulk at a temperature of 154 kelvin on cooling. In contrast, at the surface, an unusual inherent Mott MIT is observed at 130 kelvin, also on cooling but without a simultaneous lattice distortion. The broken translational symmetry at the surface causes a compressional stress that results in a 150% increase in the buckling of the Ca/Sr-O surface plane as compared to the bulk. The Ca/Sr ions are pulled toward the bulk, which stabilizes a phase more amenable to a Mott insulator ground state than does the bulk structure and also energetically prohibits the structural transition that accompanies the bulk MIT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In a trial of patients with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative chronic hepatitis B, 24 week post-treatment biochemical and virological response rates with peginterferon alpha-2a with or without lamivudine were significantly higher than with lamivudine alone. The effect of pre-treatment factors on post-treatment responses was investigated. METHODS Multivariate analyses were performed using available data from 518 patients treated with peginterferon alpha-2a with or without lamivudine, or with lamivudine alone. A post-treatment response was defined as alanine aminotransferase (ALT) normalisation and hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA level of <20,000 copies/ml. RESULTS In logistic regression analyses across all treatment arms, peginterferon alpha-2a (with or without lamivudine) therapy, younger age, female gender, high baseline ALT, low baseline HBV DNA and HBV genotype were identified as significant predictors of combined response at 24 weeks post-treatment. In the peginterferon alpha-2a and lamivudine monotherapy arms, patients with genotypes B or C had a higher chance of response than genotype D infected patients (p<0.001), the latter responding better to the combination than to peginterferon alpha-2a monotherapy (p = 0.015). At 1 year post-treatment, response rates by intention-to-treat analysis were 19.2% for the peginterferon alpha-2a, 19.0% for the combination, and 10.0% for the lamivudine groups, with genotypes B or C associated with a sustained combined response to peginterferon alpha-2a with or without lamivudine therapy. CONCLUSIONS Baseline ALT and HBV DNA levels, patient age, gender, and infecting HBV genotype significantly influenced combined response at 24 weeks post-treatment, in patients treated with peginterferon alpha-2a and/or lamivudine. At 1 year post-treatment HBV genotype was significantly predictive of efficacy for patients treated with peginterferon alpha-2a with or without lamivudine.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known about the epidemiology of adult attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). AIMS To estimate the prevalence and correlates of DSM-IV adult ADHD in the World Health Organization World Mental Health Survey Initiative. METHOD An ADHD screen was administered to respondents aged 18-44 years in ten countries in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East (n=11422). Masked clinical reappraisal interviews were administered to 154 US respondents to calibrate the screen. Multiple imputation was used to estimate prevalence and correlates based on the assumption of cross-national calibration comparability. RESULTS Estimates of ADHD prevalence averaged 3.4% (range 1.2-7.3%), with lower prevalence in lower-income countries (1.9%) compared with higher-income countries (4.2%). Adult ADHD often co-occurs with other DSM-IV disorders and is associated with considerable role disability. Few cases are treated for ADHD, but in many cases treatment is given for comorbid disorders. CONCLUSIONS Adult ADHD should be considered more seriously in future epidemiological and clinical studies than is currently the case.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Delayed puberty is common among individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) and is usually attributed to chronic disease and/or poor nutrition. However, it has recently been recognised that pubertal delay can occur even in the setting of good nutritional and clinical status. This finding, along with evidence that Cftr is expressed in rat brain, human hypothalamus, and a gonadotropin releasing hormone secreting cell line, raises the possibility that some of the pubertal delay in CF could stem directly from alterations in Cftr function that affect the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. METHODS To examine this hypothesis, we investigated pubertal timing (as assessed by vaginal opening (VO)) in a mouse model of CF (Cftr(tm1Unc)) engineered to produce a truncated Cftr mRNA and referred to as S489X. Homozygous knockout, heterozygote, and wild type (WT) female mice were examined. RESULTS As expected, the S489X-/S489X- knockout mice, which have chronic inflammation and gastrointestinal disease, grew more slowly and had later onset of puberty than WT animals. We anticipated that the S489X-/S489X+ heterozygotes, which have no clinical CF phenotype, might display an intermediate timing of puberty. Surprisingly, however, these mice had earlier VO than WT. These findings were confirmed in a second, independent model of CF engineered to generate the deltaF508 mutation in mice. Again, the homozygotes displayed later pubertal timing, while the heterozygotes displayed earlier VO than the WT animals. CONCLUSIONS These data provide further evidence that Cftr can directly modulate the reproductive endocrine axis and raise the possibility that heterozygote mutation carriers may have a reproductive advantage.

Abstract
Temperature dependent high resolution photoemission spectra of quasi-one-dimensional Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17)evince a strong renormalization of its Luttinger-liquid density-of-states anomalous exponent. We trace this new effect to interacting charge neutral critical modes that emerge naturally from the two-band nature of the material. Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17) is shown thereby to be a paradigm material that is capable of revealing new Luttinger physics.

Abstract
Ca(2-x)Sr(x)RuO4 single crystals with 0.1 < or = x < or = 2.0 have been studied systematically using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). In contrast with the well-ordered lattice structure, the local density of states at the surface clearly shows a strong doping dependent nanoscale electronic inhomogeneity, regardless of the fact of isovalent substitution. Remarkably, the surface electronic roughness measured by STM and the inverse spectral weight of quasiparticle states determined by ARPES are found to vary with x in the same manner as the bulk in-plane residual resistivity, following the Nordheim rule. For the first time, the surface measurements--especially those with STM--are shown to be in good agreement with the bulk transport results, all clearly indicating a doping-induced electronic disorder in the system.

Abstract
We present temperature dependent scanning tunneling spectroscopy data of the quasi-one-dimensional conductor Li0.9Mo6O17. The differential tunneling current in our low-temperature spectra shows a power-law behavior around the Fermi energy, which is expected for a clean Luttinger liquid. The power-law exponent is found to be 0.6. Spectra for a temperature range of 5 to 55 K can be fitted fairly well with a model for tunneling into a Luttinger liquid at the appropriate temperature. A fit with a model based on a zero bias anomaly is significantly worse compared to the Luttinger liquid model. No signature of a phase transition at T = 24 K is observed in our temperature dependent data.

Abstract
We report a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study on Na(x)CoO2 for a wide range of Na concentrations (0.3 < or = x < or = 0.72). In all the metallic samples at different x, we observed (i) only a single holelike Fermi surface centered around gamma and (ii) its area changes with x according to the Luttinger theorem. We also observed a surface state that exhibits a larger Fermi surface area. The e'(g) band and the associated small Fermi surface pockets near the K points predicted by band calculations are found to sink below the Fermi energy in a manner almost independent of the doping and temperature.

Abstract
We have measured the polarized Raman scattering spectra of Cd2Re2O7, the first superconducting pyrochlore, as a function of temperature. For temperatures below the cubic-to-tetragonal structural phase transition (SPT) at 200 K, a peak with B1 symmetry develops at zero frequency with divergent intensity. We identify this peak as the first observation of the Goldstone phonon in a crystalline solid. The Goldstone phonon is a collective excitation that exists due to the breaking of the continuous symmetry with the SPT. Its emergence coincides with that of a Raman-active soft mode. The order parameter for both features derives from an unstable doubly degenerate vibration (with Eu symmetry) of the O1 atoms which drives the SPT.

Abstract
We report angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy results of the Fermi surface of Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4, which is at the boundary of magnetic/orbital instability in the phase diagram of the Ca-substituted Sr ruthenates. Three t(2g) energy bands and the corresponding Fermi surface sheets are observed, which are also present in the Ca-free Sr2RuO4. We find that while the Fermi surface topology of the alpha, beta (d(yz,zx)) sheets remains almost the same in these two materials, the gamma (d(xy)) sheet exhibits a holelike Fermi surface in Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 in contrast to being electronlike in Sr2RuO4. Our observation of all three volume conserving Fermi surface sheets clearly demonstrates the absence of orbital-selective Mott transition, which was proposed theoretically to explain the unusual transport and magnetic properties in Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4.

Abstract
The electronic structure of single crystals Na0.6CoO2, which are closely related to the superconducting Na0.3CoO2.yH(2)O (T(c) approximately 5 K), is studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. While the measured Fermi surface (FS) is consistent with the large FS enclosing the Gamma point from the band theory, the predicted small FS pockets near the K points are absent. In addition, the band dispersion is found to be highly renormalized, and anisotropic along the two principal axes (Gamma-K, Gamma-M). Our measurements also indicate that an extended flatband is formed slightly above E(F) along Gamma-K.

Abstract
A class of materials known as "ferroelectric metals" was discussed theoretically by Anderson and Blount in 1965 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 14, 217 (1965)]], but to date no examples of this class of materials have been reported. Here we present measurements of the elastic moduli of Cd2Re2O7 through the 200 K cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition. A Landau analysis of the moduli reveals that the transition is consistent with Cd2Re2O7 being classified as a ferroelectric metal in the weaker sense described by Anderson and Blount (loss of a center of symmetry). First-principles calculations of the lattice instabilities indicate that the dominant lattice instability corresponds to a twofold degenerate mode with E(u) symmetry and that motions of the O ions forming the O octahedra dominate the energetics of the transition.

Abstract
Poly- and single-crystalline NaxCoO2 has been successfully intercalated with H2O and D2O as confirmed by x-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements show bulk superconductivity with T(c) close to 5 K in both cases. The substitution of deuterium for hydrogen has an effect on T(c) of less than 0.2 K. Investigation of the resistivity anisotropy of NaxCoO2.yH(2)O single crystals shows (a). almost zero resistivity below T(c), and (b). an abrupt upturn at T(*) approximately 52 K in both the ab plane and the c direction. The implications of our results on the possible superconducting mechanism will be discussed.

Abstract
We report the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the in-plane thermal conductivity (kappa(ab)) of high-quality monocrystalline Nd2CuO4. Isothermal measurements of the field dependence of kappa(ab) at low temperatures (2 K<or=T<or=5 K) show no change in kappa(ab) below a critical magnetic field H(c) (H(c) approximately 4.5 T for H parallel [100]) and H(c) approximately 2.5 T for H approximately parallel [110]). Above H(c), kappa(ab) more than doubles as H is increased to 9 T. At H(c), there is a transition from a noncollinear to a collinear arrangement of the Nd and Cu spins and a collapse of the gap, Delta, in an acoustic magnon branch at k=0. Closure of this gap appears to allow the conduction of substantial amounts of heat by acoustic magnons.

Abstract
We report transverse-field and zero-field muon spin rotation and relaxation studies of the superconducting rhenium oxide pyrochlore, Cd2Re2O7. Transverse-field measurements (H=0.007 T) show line broadening below T(c), which is characteristic of a vortex state, demonstrating conclusively the type-II nature of this superconductor. The penetration depth is seen to level off below about 400 mK (T/T(c) approximately 0.4), with a rather large value of lambda(T=0) approximately 7500 A. The temperature independent behavior below approximately 400 mK is consistent with a nodeless superconducting energy gap. Zero-field measurements indicate no static magnetic fields developing below the transition temperature.

Abstract
We report experimental evidence for a full orbital ordering transition in the two-dimensional lanthanum ruthenate La4Ru2O10. The observable consequences of this orbital ordering include the loss of the Ru local moment, a structural distortion which partitions Ru-O bonds into axially oriented short and long sets, a sharp jump in electrical resistivity, and the opening of a spin gap that is visible in neutron scattering experiments. This is a rare example of a discrete orbital ordering transition in a 4d transition metal oxide and demonstrates that orbital effects can have an influence on the properties of layered ruthenates, a family of compounds that notably includes the p-wave superconductor Sr2RuO4 and the field-tuned quantum critical metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7.

Abstract
Glutamate is the principal excitatory neurotransmitter within the mammalian CNS, playing an important role in many different functions in the brain such as learning and memory. In this study, a combination of molecular biology, X-ray structure determinations, as well as electrophysiology and binding experiments, has been used to increase our knowledge concerning the ionotropic glutamate receptor GluR2 at the molecular level. Five high-resolution X-ray structures of the ligand-binding domain of GluR2 (S1S2J) complexed with the three agonists (S)-2-amino-3-[3-hydroxy-5-(2-methyl-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)isoxazol-4-yl]propionic acid (2-Me-Tet-AMPA), (S)-2-amino-3-(3-carboxy-5-methylisoxazol-4-yl)propionic acid (ACPA), and (S)-2-amino-3-(4-bromo-3-hydroxy-isoxazol-5-yl)propionic acid (Br-HIBO), as well as of a mutant thereof (S1S2J-Y702F) in complex with ACPA and Br-HIBO, have been determined. The structures reveal that AMPA agonists with an isoxazole moiety adopt different binding modes in the receptor, dependent on the substituents of the isoxazole. Br-HIBO displays selectivity among different AMPA receptor subunits, and the design and structure determination of the S1S2J-Y702F mutant in complex with Br-HIBO and ACPA have allowed us to explain the molecular mechanism behind this selectivity and to identify key residues for ligand recognition. The agonists induce the same degree of domain closure as AMPA, except for Br-HIBO, which shows a slightly lower degree of domain closure. An excellent correlation between domain closure and efficacy has been obtained from electrophysiology experiments undertaken on non-desensitising GluR2i(Q)-L483Y receptors expressed in oocytes, providing strong evidence that receptor activation occurs as a result of domain closure. The structural results, combined with the functional studies on the full-length receptor, form a powerful platform for the design of new selective agonists.

Abstract
The thermal conductivity and heat capacity of single crystals of the spin 1/2 quasi-2D Heisenberg antiferromagnet K(2)V(3)O(8) have been measured from 1.9 to 300 K in magnetic fields from 0 to 8 T. The zero field thermal conductivity data are consistent with resonant scattering of phonons by magnons near the zone boundary. Application of a magnetic field greater than 1 T, however, produces a new magnetic ground state with substantial heat transport by long wavelength magnons.

METHODS 31 liver cirrhosis patients were treated with rh GH (0.25 IU/kg/day-) and 20 such patients with human albumin (10 g/day) as control all for 10 days. Serum levels of growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and albumin (ALB) were measured by radio-immunoassay before 24h and after 24h and 10 days of rhGH therapy. Serum levels of GH and IGF-1 of 10 age matched healthy subjects were also measured. RESULTS As compared with healthy subjects, the pretreatment serum GH level of liver cirrhosis patients was high (4.96 +/- 3.97 vs 1.62 +/- 2.26, P <0.05), and the IGF-1 level was markedly lower (36.53 +/- 12.77 vs 56.95 +/- 16.46, P <0.01). After 10 days of rhGH administration, the serum IGF-1 and ALB levels of the treated group increased significantly as compared with the control group (P <0.01). CONCLUSIONS Exogenous rhGH therapy can overcome the GH resistance of liver cirrhosis patient s and can increase significantly the serum albumin level as compared with the control group who were treated with human albumin only.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the annual incidence of thyroid diseases before and after the increase of iodized salt intake. METHOD A total of 26,010 persons were examined from mid August to the end of December in 1999. RESULTS 1. Three hundred and ten patients of thyroid diseases were identified from 1990 to July 1999. One hundred and eighty-three patients were diagnosed after iodine supplementation. 2. The constitution of thyroid diseases had changed significantly regarding the increase of hyperthyroidism, simple goiter and thyroid nodule. 3. Fifty-five patients with hyperthyroidism including 39 patients (70.91%) receiving iodine supplementation were diagnosed. The average annual incidence of hyperthyroidism after iodine supplementation was 36.87 per 100,000, a three-time increase as compared with that before iodine supplementation. The incidence of hyperthyroidism began to show a significant rise in 1996. The year with highest annual incidence was 1997, remaining at high level after supplying iodized salt. Since then the annual relative risk for hyperthyroidism had been increasing. CONCLUSION The number of patients with thyroid diseases showed a significant increase after mass iodine supplement. At the same time, the spectrum of thyroid diseases had also changed. Iodized salt intake and the incidence of hyperthyroidism showed a significant correlation. However, the typical model of the change of disease patterns incidence needs further study.

Abstract
A photoinduced method for converting large quantities of silver nanospheres into triangular nanoprisms is reported. The photo-process has been characterized by time-dependent ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy, allowing for the observation of several key intermediates in and characteristics of the conversion process. This light-driven process results in a colloid with distinctive optical properties that directly relate to the nanoprism shape of the particles. Theoretical calculations coupled with experimental observations allow for the assignment of the nanoprism plasmon bands and for the first identification of two distinct quadrupole plasmon resonances for a nanoparticle. Unlike the spherical particles they are derived from that Rayleigh light-scatter in the blue, these nanoprisms exhibit scattering in the red, which could be useful in developing multicolor diagnostic labels on the basis not only of nanoparticle composition and size but also of shape.

Prostaglandin E1 protects lung transplants from ischemia-reperfusion injury: a shift from pro- to anti-inflammatory cytokines. Transplantation 2001; 72:1505-12. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) has been demonstrated to reduce ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury following lung transplantation. However, the cytoprotective mechanisms remain largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the mechanism through which PGE1 improves IR injury is related to the level of apoptosis or the release of inflammatory cytokines. METHODS In a rat single-lung-transplant model, animals were randomly allocated into four groups of five animals each. Group 1 received normal saline (NS) in the preservation solution and during the 2-hr reperfusion period. Group 2 received NS in the preservation solution and PGE1 during the reperfusion period. Group 3 received PGE1 in the preservation solution and NS during the reperfusion period. Group 4 received PGE1 in the preservation solution and during the reperfusion period. RESULTS The two groups that received PGE1 during the reperfusion period had a significantly higher partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2), lower wet-dry weight ratio, and lower peak airway pressure at the end of the reperfusion period than did the two groups that received NS. In the two groups that received PGE1 during the reperfusion period, we observed significantly higher levels of interleukin (IL)-10 in the transplanted lung tissue and plasma and significantly lower levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interferon (IFN)-gamma, and IL-12 in lung tissue. The levels of IL-4 and macrophage inflammatory protein-2 (MIP-2) were not significantly different between groups. The number of apoptotic cells and the expression of Bcl-2 were not significantly different between groups. CONCLUSIONS PGE1 does not decrease the amount of apoptosis after reperfusion and does not significantly upregulate Bcl-2. We have demonstrated that PGE1 administered during the reperfusion period reduces IR injury and improves lung function through a mechanism that is likely mediated by a shift between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokine release.

Abstract
In addition to coordinating immune and inflammatory responses, NF-kappaB/Rel transcription factors control cell survival. Normally, NF-kappaB dimers are sequestered in the cytoplasm by binding to inhibitory IkappaB proteins, and can be activated rapidly by signals that induce the sequential phosphorylation and proteolysis of IkappaBs. Activation of NF-kappaB antagonizes apoptosis or programmed cell death by numerous triggers, including the ligand engagement of 'death receptors' such as tumour-necrosis factor (TNF) receptor. The anti-apoptotic activity of NF-kappaB is also crucial to oncogenesis and to chemo- and radio-resistance in cancer. Cytoprotection by NF-kappaB involves the activation of pro-survival genes; however, its basis remains poorly understood. Here we report that NF-kappaB complexes downregulate the c-Jun amino-terminal kinase (JNK) cascade, thus establishing a link between the NF-kappaB and the JNK pathways. This link involves the transcriptional upregulation of gadd45beta/myd118 (ref. 4), which downregulates JNK signalling induced by the TNF receptor (TNF-R). This NF-kappaB-dependent inhibition of the JNK pathway is central to the control of cell death. Our findings define a protective mechanism that is mediated by NF-kappaB complexes and establish a role for the persistent activation of JNK in the apoptotic response to TNF-alpha.

Abstract
pT181 is a small rolling-circle plasmid from Staphylococcus aureus whose initiator protein, RepC, melts the plasmid's double-strand origin (DSO) and extrudes a cruciform involving IR II, a palindrome flanking the initiation nick site. We have hypothesized that the cruciform is required for initiation, providing a single-stranded region for the assembly of the replisome (R. Jin et al., 1997, EMBO J. 16, 4456-4566). In this study, we have tested the requirement for cruciform extrusion by disrupting the symmetry of the IR II palindrome or by increasing its length. The modified DSOs were tested for replication with RepC in trans. Rather surprisingly, disruption of the IR II symmetry had no detectable effect on replication or on competitivity of the modified DSO, though plasmids with IR II disrupted were less efficiently relaxed than the wild type by RepC. However, in conjunction with IR II disruption, modification of the tight RepC binding site IR III blocked replication. These results define two key elements of the pT181 initiation mechanism--the IR II conformation and the RepC binding site (IR III)--and they indicate that pT181 replication initiation is sufficiently robust to be able to compensate for significant modifications in the configuration of the DSO.

Abstract
Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis is a useful method to measure the ability of a clinical risk model to discriminate between hospital deaths and survivors. Its use in medicine originated as a method for synthesizing the specificity and sensitivity of diagnostic tests across a spectrum of possible cut points. The area under the ROC curve can be interpreted as a probability of correct classification or prediction. We illustrate its use in three steps: first, with a dichotomous variable to introduce specificity and sensitivity; next, with a categorical risk factor (surgical urgency) to produce a primitive ROC curve; and finally, with a continuous risk factor (age) to approximate the usual ROC curve used for clinical risk models.

Abstract
The tunneling spectrum of the superconducting phase with Tc approximately 3.0 K has been measured in the Ru-embedded region of Sr2RuO4 using cleaved junctions. A sharp zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) has been observed below 3 K. All characteristics of this ZBCP suggest that it originates from Andreev surface bound states, indicating that the pairing in the 3-K phase is also non- s-wave. Below the bulk Tc of Sr2RuO4 (approximately 1.5 K), a crossover from sharp to bell-shaped ZBCP was found. This supports the theory that there is a phase transition in the 3-K phase region near the bulk Tc.

Abstract
Sequence analysis of the nifA gene, including its 5' flanking region, of Mesorhizobium huakuii revealed the presence of a novel IS-like element called ISMh2. It is 828 bp in length and possesses two imperfect terminal inverted repeats of 14 bp with only one mismatch. The putative transposase encoded by ISMh2 is composed of 204 amino acids. In comparison with other insertion sequences ISMh2 likely belongs to the IS6 family. Multiple copies of ISMh2 were detected in the genome of M. huakuii 159 by Southern hybridization. RT-PCR analysis showed that nifA and ISMh2 cotranscribed. Attempts to detect the transposition ability of ISMh2 were unsuccessful.

Abstract
Understanding the complexities of electronic and magnetic ground states in solids is one of the main goals of solid-state physics. Transition-metal oxides have proved to be particularly fruitful in this regard, especially for those materials with the perovskite structure, where the special characteristics of transition-metal-oxygen orbital hybridization determine their properties. Ruthenates have recently emerged as an important family of perovskites because of the unexpected evolution from high-temperature ferromagnetism in SrRuO3 to low-temperature superconductivity in Sr2RuO4 (refs 1, 2). Here we show that a ruthenate in a different structural family, La4Ru6O19, displays a number of highly unusual properties, most notably non-Fermi-liquid behaviour. The properties of La4Ru6O19 have no analogy among the thousands of previously characterized transition-metal oxides. Instead, they resemble those of CeCu6-xAux-a widely studied f-electron-based heavy fermion intermetallic compound that is often considered as providing the best example of non-Fermi-liquid behaviour. In the ruthenate, non-Fermi-liquid behaviour appears to arise from just the right balance between the interactions of localized electronic states derived from Ru-Ru bonding and delocalized states derived from Ru-O hybridization.

Metallothionein 1F mRNA expression correlates with histological grade in breast carcinoma. Breast Cancer Res Treat 2001; 66:265-72. Abstract
Immunohistochemical expression of metallothioneins (MTs), a group of intracellular metal-binding proteins, is well documented in breast cancer. However, there is a paucity of information on the expression of the different MT isoforms in breast cancer tissues. The dichotomous association of MT overexpression with tumour types and progression led us to examine the role of the MT-1F mRNA isoform in breast cancer. We evaluated MT expression in 48 primary invasive ductal breast cancer tissues by immunohistochemistry, and the corresponding MT-1F mRNA expression via a semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay. The specificity of the RT-PCR products was confirmed by direct cycle sequencing and restriction enzyme digestion. Immunohistochemical analysis of MT revealed a significantly higher MT expression in histological grade 3 tumours as compared to grade 1 and 2 tumours (p = 0.021). Similarly, MT-1F mRNA expression was found to be significantly higher in grade 3 tumours (p < 0.001). The results suggest that the MT-1F isoform influences histological differentiation in invasive ductal breast cancer. The converse is also true in that the histological grade may determine the level of MT-1F expression in breast cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the location and distribution of transfusion transmitted virus (TTV) in the liver and extrahepatic tissues. METHODS TTV DNA was detected in paraffin-embedded autopsy liver and extrahepatic tissues, including liver, pancreas, kidney, spleen, testicle, and heart from 13 patients with non A-G hepatitis by nested-PCR and in situ hybridization (ISH) techniques. RESULTS Positive hybridization signals of TTV nucleus acid were observed in 5 liver, 3 kidney, 2 pancreas and spleen tissues, respectively. TTV DNA was detected in one from each two samples of testicle and heart. Positive signal was mainly located in nucleoli of the liver and extrahepatic parenchymal cells. There was not obvious pathological damage in those extrahepatic tissues. The positive rate of PCR approximately corresponded to ISH. CONCLUSIONS TTV can infect hepatic and extrahepatic tissues and its infection in extrahepatic tissues might be responsible for a state of reinfection and higher prevalence in different population.

Abstract
Metallothioneins (MTs), a group of cysteine-rich proteins with a small molecular mass, are known to have metalloregulatory functions. MT gene expression has been demonstrated to be cell type-specific and differentially regulated (possibly related to their germ layer origin and different functional states). In vitro studies suggest that MT-2A, MT-IE, and MT-1F isoforms may be related to breast cancer. In this study, data on MT-2A, MT-1E, MT-1F mRNA analysis via reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in invasive ductal breast cancer tissues and their adjacent benign breast tissues from 27 mastectomies are presented. Expression of mRNA in all the three MT isoforms was detected in both cancerous and adjacent benign breast tissues (with MT-2A mRNA expression being the highest). MT-1F expression was significantly higher in benign breast tissues compared with the breast cancers (P=0.017). In situ hybridization confirmed the expression of MT-2A mRNA in the myoepithelial cells of the breast tissues. Immunohistochemical localization of the MT protein revealed that myoepithelial cells consistently expressed the MT protein, while the cancer cells expressed MT with great variation. Based on our immunohistochemical and mRNA analysis, it is likely that the three MT isoforms are specifically expressed in myoepithelial cells of benign breast tissues and cancer cells of the invasive ductal breast cancer tissues. As MT expression occurs in myoepithelial cells and ductal breast cancer cells, our finding supports the proposition that loss of myoepithelial cells in invasive mammary cancers may be compensated in part by changes in the tumor cells, which may subsequently be the basis for studying the role of MT in breast physiology and carcinogenesis. Differential MT-1F expression in breast myoepithelial cells warrants further study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To establish national baseline information on asthma management practices of physicians, to compare the reported practices with the Canadian Consensus recommendations and to identify results potentially useful for interventions that improve physician asthma management practices. DESIGN National, stratified cross-sectional survey. SETTINGS The 10 provinces and two territories of Canada, from 1996 to 1997. PARTICIPANTS Questionnaires were sent to 4489 physicians stratified by province/territory and specialty group (family/general practice, respirology, internal medicine, pediatrics and allergy/immunology); 2605 responses were received. OUTCOME MEASURES Methods for the diagnosis, treatment, education and follow-up of patients with asthma ('asthma management practices'). RESULTS Significant variations existed among the five specialty groups in asthma management practices. A low use of objective measures of airflow limitation to assist with diagnosis was found among some respondents (mostly family physicians). Up to 40% of physicians regarded the daily fixed dosing (three or four times a day) of inhaled, short acting beta2-agonist as 'first-line therapy' for moderate to severe asthma. A minority of physicians reported using written action plans for patients or referring them to other health professionals for asthma education. Insufficient time during appointments and a perceived lack of appropriate educational materials were frequently cited as reasons for not providing asthma education. The perceived knowledge of the Canadian Consensus recommendations varied among physicians but was lowest among nonspecialists. CONCLUSIONS The survey showed variations in certain aspects of the management of asthma by physicians. The findings will help to target specific areas for future physician education programs and other behavioural change strategies.

Abstract
Evidence from several different experimental systems suggests that regulatory cells specific for self-antigens exist in the normal immune repertoire, and that these cells are necessary for maintenance of self-tolerance and prevention of autoimmune disease. We attempted to demonstrate the existence of regulatory cells specific for central nervous system (CNS) antigens in normal mice. We tested the effects of myelin basic protein (MBP), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and a mixture of soluble brain proteins (SBP) on cultured splenocytes. MBP at 50 microg/ml inhibited antigen-driven proliferation and this suppressive effect could be partially blocked by neutralizing antibodies to transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta. MBP decreased expression of mRNA for the cytokines IL-2 and IFN-gamma, and slightly increased mRNA expression for TGF-beta. These effects did not appear to be mediated by regulatory cells specific for MBP, since MBP also suppressed proliferation in MBP-deficient shiverer mice and the suppressive effect could not be reproduced with selected MBP peptides. SBP at 250 microg/ml also inhibited antigen-driven proliferation, but this effect could not be blocked by neutralizing antibodies against IL-4, IL-10 or TGF-beta. SBP reduced expression of mRNA for IL-2, IL-10 and TGF-beta. These results are more consistent with the presence of a soluble inhibitory factor than with the action of SBP-specific regulatory cells. GFAP had no significant effect on proliferation. These results do not support the existence of regulatory cells specific for CNS antigens. Further investigation into non-antigen-specific mechanisms will be important in defining how autoimmune damage in the CNS is prevented.

Abstract
BACKGROUND PG27 is an immunosuppressive fraction purified from an extract of a Chinese medicinal plant, Tripterygium wilfordii. We tested PG27 in rat cardiac and renal allotransplantation, and we examined the immunosuppressive interaction with cyclosporine (CsA). METHODS Brown Norway (BN) rat heart or kidney allografts were transplanted into the abdomen of Lewis rats, which were treated by the intraperitoneal or oral route with PG27, CsA, or both. RESULTS PG27 administered intraperitoneally to Lewis recipients for 16 days at 10-30 mg/kg/day significantly increased the median survival time of BN heart allografts from 7 to 18-22 days. Oral administration was effective, with cardiac allograft survival prolonged to > 100 days with 52 days of treatment. PG27 at 20-30 mg/kg/day significantly extended the median survival time of BN kidney allograft recipients from 9 to 36.5-77 days, and 30 mg/kg/day for 52 days extended survival beyond 200 days. PG27 combined with CsA significantly enhanced heart and kidney allograft survival, even at doses of CsA ineffective when administered alone. The addition of 5 or 10 mg/kg/day PG27 reduced by 50-75% the CsA dose needed for 100% kidney allograft survival. The combination index was less than 1.0, indicating synergy of PG27 with CsA in prolonging cardiac and renal allograft survival. Furthermore, the PG27/CsA combination exerted a positive influence on renal allograft function. PG490 (triptolide, a constituent of PG27) and PG490-88 (a semisynthetic derivative of PG490) suppressed rejection of cardiac and renal allografts. CONCLUSIONS The PG27 herbal extract demonstrated immunosuppressive activity by prolonging heart and kidney allograft survival, displaying synergy in the immunosuppressive interaction with CsA, and improving renal allograft function in combination with CsA. PG490 and PG490-88 compounds were also effective.

Abstract
BACKGROUND PG27 is an immunosuppressive fraction purified from an extract of a Chinese medicinal plant Tripterygium wilfordii, which we investigated alone and in combination with cyclosporine (CsA) in a concordant, hamster-to-rat cardiac xenotransplantation model. METHODS Golden Syrian hamster hearts were heterotopically transplanted into the abdomen of Lewis rat recipients, which were treated intraperitoneally or orally with PG27, CsA, or both. RESULTS Combination therapy with 30 mg/kg(day of PG27 and CsA at 10 mg/kg/day successfully suppressed acute hamster-to-rat cardiac xenograft rejection. Treatment with PG27 or CsA alone was ineffective. Among several effective combinations, the best regimen involved PG27 at 30 mg/kg/day and CsA at 5 mg/ kg/day from days 8 to 35 and then CsA at 5 mg/kg/day from days 36 to 100, which produced 100% survival beyond 100 days. CsA suppressed the heterospecific lymphocytotoxic antibody response and inhibited IgG but not IgM xenoantibody production (which led to xenograft rejection), whereas PG27 alone did not prevent antibody production. The PG27/CsA combination blocked the lymphocytotoxic antibody response and IgG and IgM xenoantibody production induced by cardiac xenotransplantation. CONCLUSIONS PG27 combined with CsA substantially prolonged hamster-to-rat cardiac xenograft survival, as well as completely inhibiting xenoantibody production.

Metallothionein 1E mRNA is highly expressed in oestrogen receptor-negative human invasive ductal breast cancer. Br J Cancer 2000; 83:319-23. Abstract
Metallothioneins (MTs), a group of ubiquitous metalloproteins, comprise isoforms encoded by ten functional genes in humans. Different MT isoforms possibly play different functional roles during development or under various physiological conditions. The MT-1E isoform mRNA has been recently shown to be differentially expressed in oestrogen receptor (OR)-positive and OR-negative breast cancer cell lines. In this study, we evaluated MT-1E mRNA expression via semi-quantitative RT-PCR in 51 primary invasive ductal breast cancer tissues, concurrently with OR-positive and progesterone receptor (PR)-positive MCF7 cells, OR-negative and PR-negative MDA-MB-231 cells and PR-transfected MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells (ABC28). We demonstrated significantly higher MT-1E mRNA expression in OR-negative compared with OR-positive breast cancer tissues (P = 0.026). MCF7 cells lacked MT-1E mRNA expression, while both OR- and PR-negative MDA-MD-231 cells exhibited a high level of MT-1E mRNA expression. The level of MT-1E mRNA expression in progesterone-treated and -untreated ABC28 cells remained similar as the parental cell line MDA-MB-231-C2 cells. The results suggest that MT-1E may have specific and functional roles in OR-negative invasive ductal breast cancers, possibly mediated via effector genes downstream of the oestrogen receptor, but not through the PR pathway.

Abstract
The nifA gene from Mesorhizobium huakuii 159 was identified and sequenced. An open reading frame coding for 44734D. NifA protein would detected. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequence with other NifA proteins revealed the presence of the conserved central domain and the C-terminal DNA-binding domains. But the predicted M. huakuii NifA protein lacked a N-terminal domain that is present in the homologous proteins. Mutants with Nif- phenotype were obtained by site-directed Tn5 mutagenesis. A nifA constitutively expressed plasmid was constructed, and this plasmid could activate the nifH expression in YMC11.
