Hybrid metal organic frameworks as an Exotic material for the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants present in wastewater: A review

In this world, water is considered as the Elixir for all living creatures. Human life rolls with water, and every activity depends upon water. Worldwide water resources are being contaminated due to the elevation in the population count, industrialization and urbanization. Ejection of chemicals by industries and domestic sewages remains the major reason in the destruction of natural water resources. Contaminated water with harmful microbes, chemical dyes, pesticides, and carcinogens are the root cause of many diseases and deaths of living species. In this scenario, researchers engaged in producing ultra components to remove the contaminants. Metal organic frameworks (MOF) are the desired combination of organic and inorganic materials to achieve the required target. MOFs possess unique characteristics like tunable internal structure, porosity, crystallinity and high surface area which enable them for energy and environmental application. For the past years, MOFs are concentrated more as a photocatalyst in the treatment of polluted water. These research studies discuss the improvement of photocatalytic performance of MOF by the incorporation of metals, metal coupled with nanoparticles like polymers, graphene, etc., into it to achieve the enhanced photocatalytic activity by scavenging entire chemicals and harmful microbes to retain the quality of water. The target of this review article is to focus on the state of the art research work on MOFs in photocatalytic water treatment technique.

Invasive plants as biosorbents for environmental remediation: a review

Water contamination is an environmental burden for the next generations, calling for advanced methods such as adsorption to remove pollutants. For instance, unwanted biowaste and invasive plants can be converted into biosorbents for environmental remediation. This would partly solve the negative effects of invasive plants, estimated at 120 billion dollars in the USA. Here we review the distribution, impact, and use of invasive plants for water treatment, with emphasis on the preparation of biosorbents and removal of pollutants such as cadmium, lead, copper, zinc, nickel, mercury, chromate, synthetic dyes, and fossil fuels. Those biosorbents can remove 90-99% heavy metals from aqueous solutions. High adsorption capacities of 476.190 mg/g for synthetic dyes and 211 g/g for diesel oils have been observed. We also discuss the regeneration of these biosorbents.

Green synthesis of ZrO2 nanoparticles and nanocomposites for biomedical and environmental applications: a review

Pollution and diseases such as the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) are major issues that may be solved partly by nanotechnology. Here we review the synthesis of ZrO₂ nanoparticles and their nanocomposites using compounds from bacteria, fungi, microalgae, and plants. For instance, bacteria, microalgae, and fungi secret bioactive metabolites such as fucoidans, digestive enzymes, and proteins, while plant tissues are rich in reducing sugars, polyphenols, flavonoids, saponins, and amino acids. These compounds allow reducing, capping, chelating, and stabilizing during the transformation of Zr⁴⁺ into ZrO₂ nanoparticles. Green ZrO₂ nanoparticles display unique properties such as a nanoscale size of 5-50 nm, diverse morphologies, e.g. nanospheres, nanorods and nanochains, and wide bandgap energy of 3.7-5.5 eV. Their high stability and biocompatibility are suitable biomedical and environmental applications, such as pathogen and cancer inactivation, and pollutant removal. Emerging applications of green ZrO₂-based nanocomposites include water treatment, catalytic reduction, nanoelectronic devices, and anti-biofilms.

Evaluating green silver nanoparticles as prospective biopesticides: An environmental standpoint

The current method of agriculture entails the usage of excessive amounts of pesticides and fertilizers. The blatant use of conventional pesticides and fertilizers over several decades has led to their bioaccumulation with adverse effects on soil biodiversity and the development of resistance by pests. With the decline in clinically useful antibiotics and increase in multi drug resistant microbes, it is imperative to develop new and effective antimicrobial therapies. Growing awareness and demand for efficacious biorational pesticides are on the rise. Silver nanoparticles are widely known antimicrobials and have been in use for several purposes for a long time. This work reviews the implications of applying silver nanoparticles in agriculture and their possible consequences. The physiological and biochemical changes in plants due to the uptake of silver nanoparticles as a consequence of its morphology, capping biomolecules and method of application are comprehensively discussed in this review article. Studies on tolerance levels or stress due to silver nanoparticles by variation in concentration/doses on diverse flora and fauna are also analyzed here. Further, phytotoxicity and genotoxicity due to the metal as well as its transformation in soil, water and sludge are taken into account. We also gauge the potential of biogenic silver nanoparticles-viable antimicrobial agents for enhanced applications in agriculture as biopesticides.

Recent advances and sustainable development of biofuels production from lignocellulosic biomass

Many countries in the world are facing the demand for non-renewable fossil fuels because of overpopulation and economic boom. To reduce environmental pollution and zero carbon emission, the conversion of biomass into biofuels has paid better attention and is considered to be an innovative approach. A diverse raw material has been utilized as feedstock for the production of biofuel, depending on the availability of biomass, cost-effectiveness, and their geographic location. Among the different raw materials, lignocellulosic biomass has fascinated many researchers around the world. The current review discovers the potential application of lignocellulosic biomass for the production of biofuels. Various pretreatment methods have been widely used to increase the hydrolysis rate and accessibility of biomass. This review highlights recent advances in pretreatment methodologies for the enhanced production of biofuels. Detailed descriptions of the mechanism of biomass processing pathway, optimization, and modeling study have been discussed.

Thermochemical conversion of municipal solid waste into energy and hydrogen: a review

The rising global population is inducing a fast increase in the amount of municipal waste and, in turn, issues of rising cost and environmental pollution. Therefore, alternative treatments such as waste-to-energy should be developed in the context of the circular economy. Here, we review the conversion of municipal solid waste into energy using thermochemical methods such as gasification, combustion, pyrolysis and torrefaction. Energy yield depends on operating conditions and feedstock composition. For instance, torrefaction of municipal waste at 200 °C generates a heating value of 33.01 MJ/kg, while the co-pyrolysis of cereals and peanut waste yields a heating value of 31.44 MJ/kg at 540 °C. Gasification at 800 °C shows higher carbon conversion for plastics, of 94.48%, than for waste wood and grass pellets, of 70-75%. Integrating two or more thermochemical treatments is actually gaining high momentum due to higher energy yield. We also review reforming catalysts to enhance dihydrogen production, such as nickel on support materials such as CaTiO₃, SrTiO₃, BaTiO₃, Al₂O₃, TiO₃, MgO, ZrO₂. Techno-economic analysis, sensitivity analysis and life cycle assessment are discussed.

Current advances in microbial fuel cell technology toward removal of organic contaminants - A review

At present, water pollution and demand for clean energy are most pressing global issues. On a daily basis, huge quantity of organic wastes gets released into the water ecosystems, causing health related problems. The need-of-the-hour is to utilize proficient and cheaper techniques for complete removal of harmful organic contaminants from water. In this regard, microbial fuel cell (MFC) has emerged as a promising technique, which can produce useful electrical energy from organic wastes and decontaminate polluted water. Herein, we have systematically reviewed recently published results, observations and progress made on the applications of MFCs in degradation of organic contaminants, including organic synthetic dyes, agro pollutants, health care contaminants and other organics (such as phenols and their derivatives, polyhydrocarbons and caffeine). MFC-based hybrid technologies, including MFC-constructed wetland, MFC-photocatalysis, MFC-catalysis, MFC-Fenton process, etc., developed to obtain high removal efficiency and bioelectricity production simultaneously have been discussed. Further, this review assessed the influence of factors, such as nature of electrode catalysts, organic pollutants, electrolyte, microbes and operational conditions, on the performance of pristine and hybrid MFC reactors in terms of pollutant removal efficiency and power generation simultaneously. Moreover, the limitations and future research directions of MFCs for wastewater treatment have been discussed. Finally, a conclusive summary of the findings has been outlined.

SARS-CoV-2 variants and environmental effects of lockdowns, masks and vaccination: a review

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is continuously evolving and four variants of concern have been identified so far, including Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta variants. Here we review the indirect effect of preventive measures such as the implementation of lockdowns, mandatory face masks, and vaccination programs, to control the spread of the different variants of this infectious virus on the environment. We found that all these measures have a considerable environmental impact, notably on waste generation and air pollution. Waste generation is increased due to the implementation of all these preventive measures. While lockdowns decrease air pollution, unsustainable management of face mask waste and temperature-controlled supply chains of vaccination potentially increases air pollution.

Biomass-derived carbon-based and silica-based materials for catalytic and adsorptive applications- An update since 2010

Biomass, which defined as plant- or animal-based materials, is intriguing tremendous scientific attentions due to its renewable attribute in serving energy security. Amongst, the plant-based biomasses, particularly those that co-generated in the agriculture activities, are commonly regarded as fuel for burning, which overlooked their hidden potentials for high-end applications. Organically, the plant-based biomass constitutes of lignocellulose components, which can be served as promising precursors for functionalized carbon materials. Meanwhile, its inorganic counterpart made up of various minerals, with Si being the most concerned one. With the advancement of biomass technologies and material synthesis in recent years, numerous attempts were endeavoured to obtain valorised products from biomass. Particularly, syntheses of catalytic and adsorptive materials are actively researched in the field of biomass reutilization. Herein, our work systematically summarized the advancements of biomass-materials for these applications in recent 10 years (2010-2020), with a special focus on the carbon-based and Si-based catalytic/adsorptive materials. Significantly, the deriving steps, inclusive of both pre-treatment and post-treatment of such materials, are incorporated in the discussion, alongside with their significances revealed too. The performance of the as-obtained materials in the respective application is systematically correlated to their physicochemical properties, hence providing valuable insights to the readers. Challenges and promising directions to be explored are raised too at the end of the review, aiming to advocate better-usage of biomass while offering great opportunities to sustain catalysis and adsorption in the industrial scale.

Recent advancements in microbial fuel cells: A review on its electron transfer mechanisms, microbial community, types of substrates and design for bio-electrochemical treatment

Accelerated charge transfer in well-designed S-scheme Fe@TiO2/Boron carbon nitride heterostructures for high performance tetracycline removal and selective photo-reduction of CO2 greenhouse gas into CH4 fuel

Designing and fabrication of smart hybrid multifunctional materials for energy/fuel production and environmental detoxification is indeed of great significance for sustainable development. Herein, we synthesized a new well-structured S-scheme heterostructure Fe@TiO₂/Boron Carbon nitride (FT/BCN) with high performance tetracycline degradation and selective CO₂ photo-reduction to CH₄. Under visible light irradiation, 96.3% tetracycline was degraded in 60 min using best performing FT30/BCN sample with a high 83.2% total organic carbon removal in 2 h. The tetracycline degradation rate for FT30/BCN composite catalyst was ∼7 times than bare boron carbon nitride (BCN). The impact of reaction parameters as pH, presence of interfering electrolytes, light source and water matrix was also investigated. The FT30/BCN photocatalyst shows dramatic improvement in CO₂ photoreduction as exhibited in 24.7 μmol g^-1 h^-1 CH₄ and 2.4 μmol g^-1 h^-1 CO evolutions with optimal 91.1% CH₄ selectivity. Pure BCN shows a poor 39.1% selectivity. Further, effect of alkali activation, CO₂/H₂O feed ratio, reducing agent and light source onto CH₄ production and selectivity was also investigated. The CH₄ evolution and selectivity was improved because of enhanced visible light absorption, high adsorption potential, charge carrier separation and high reducing power of photogenerated electrons induced by an effective S-scheme heterojunction between Fe@TiO₂ and boron carbon nitride. An S-scheme (step-scheme) charge transfer mechanism is here operative both during tetracycline removal and CO₂ reduction. The drug degradation route and photocatalytic mechanism for antibiotic removal and CO₂ reduction was also predicted.

Linearized and nonlinearized modellings for comparative uptake assessment of metal-organic framework-derived nanocomposite towards sulfonamide antibiotics

The emergent occurrence of sulfonamide species involving sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethazine (SMZ) in aquatic systems can cause a wide range of potential risks; hence, remediation strategies need to be necessary. Here, we develop the novel metal-organic framework-derived nanocomposite, and apply for the adsorption of SDZ and SMZ antibiotics. To assess the best-fitting kinetic (pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order) and isotherm (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Redlich-Peterson, Sips, Toth, and Khan) models, a series of numerous statistical analysis was performed. Numerous error functions including squares of the errors (SSE), hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID), Marquardt's percent standard deviation (MPSD), and mean relative error (MRE) were also analyzed to assess the linear and nonlinear models. The results indicated that both linear and nonlinear kinetic models were mostly fitted well with pseudo second-order models (R_adj)² > 0.97. Although linear kinetics gave better (R_adj)², error functions (MRE, SSE, HYBRID, and MPSD) were mostly higher than those of nonlinear kinetics. For adsorption isotherm, nonlinear Redlich-Peterson was the most compatible model with extremely high adjusted coefficients of determination (R_adj)² ~ 1.0000. While nonlinear Langmuir model gave relatively high (R_adj)² (0.9898-0.9960) and acceptable error functions, we found the considerable difference of error functions and parameters among four types of linear Langmuir (Types I, II, III, IV). The findings indicate potential errors as selecting one of linearized Langmuir types in equilibrium study. It is suggested that nonlinear models should be applied for better fitness.

A review on recent advancements in photocatalytic remediation for harmful inorganic and organic gases

Due to the continuous increase in industrial pollution and modern lifestyle, several types of air contaminants and their concentrations are emerging in the atmosphere. Besides, photocatalysis has gained much attention in the elimination of air pollution. Several ultraviolet and visible light active photocatalysts were tested in air pollutant treatment and thereby, the number of reports was increased in the past few years. In this context, this review describes the photocatalytic treatment of gaseous inorganic contaminants like NO_x, H₂S, and organic pollutants like formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and benzene derivatives. Different photocatalysts with their air pollutant removal efficiency were explained. Improving strategies such as metal/non-metal doping, composite formation for photocatalyst activities have been studied. Moreover, an analysis is presented from each of the existing photocatalytic immobilization approaches. Also, factors responsible for effective photocatalysis were explained. Overall, the photocatalytic abatement technique is an auspicious way to eliminate different air contaminants. Besides, existing drawbacks and future challenges are also discussed.

Green approach and strategies for wastewater treatment using bioelectrochemical systems: A critical review of fundamental concepts, applications, mechanism, and future trends

Millions of litters of multifarious wastewater are directly disposed into the environment annually to reduce the processing costs leading to eutrophication and destroying the clean water sources. The bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have recently received significant attention from researchers due to their ability to convert waste into energy and their high efficiency of wastewater treatment. However, most of the performed researches of the BESs have focused on energy generation, which created a literature gap on the utilization of BESs for wastewater treatment. The review highlights this gap from various aspects, including the BESs trends, fundamentals, applications, and mechanisms. A different review approach has followed in the present work using a bibliometric review (BR) which defined the literature gap of BESs publications in the degradation process section and linked the systematic review (SR) with it to prove and review the finding systematically. The degradation mechanisms of the BESs have been illustrated comprehensively in the current work, and various suggestions have been provided for supporting future studies and cooperation.

Critical review on hazardous pollutants in water environment: Occurrence, monitoring, fate, removal technologies and risk assessment

Water is required for the existence of all living things. Water pollution has grown significantly, over the decades and now it has developed as a serious worldwide problem. The presence and persistence of Hazardous pollutants such as dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, heavy metals, fertilizer and pesticides and their transformed products are the matter of serious environmental and health concerns. A variety of approaches have been tried to clean up water and maintain water quality. The type of pollutants present in the water determines the bulk of technological solutions. The main objective of this article was to review the occurrences and fate of hazardous contaminants (dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, heavy metals, and pesticides) found in wastewater effluents. These effluents mingle with other streams of water and that are utilized for a variety of reasons such as irrigation and other domestic activities that is further complicating the issue. It also discussed traditional treatment approaches as well as current advances in hazardous pollutants removal employing graphite oxides, carbon nanotubes, metal organic structures, magnetic nano composites, and other innovative forms of useable materials. It also discussed the identification and quantification of harmful pollutants using various approaches, as well as current advancements. Finally, a risk assessment of hazardous pollutants in water is provided in terms of the human health and the environment. This data is anticipated to serve as a foundation for future improvements in hazardous pollutant risk assessment. Furthermore, future studies on hazardous pollutants must not only emphasize on the parent chemicals, as well as on their possible breakdown products in various media.

Engineering conversion of Asteraceae plants into biochars for exploring potential applications: A review

Asteraceae presents one of the most globally prevalent, cultivated, and fundamental plant families. However, a large amount of agricultural wastes has been yearly released from Asteraceae crops, causing adverse impacts on the environment. The objective of this work is to have insights into their biomass potentials and technical possibility of conversion into biochars. Physicochemical properties are systematically articulated to orientate environmental application, soil amendment, and other utilizations. Utilizations of Asteraceae biochars in wastewater treatment can be categorized by heavy metal ions, organic dyes, antibiotics, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and explosive compounds. Some efforts were made to analyze the production cost, as well as the challenges and prospects of Asteraceae-based biochars.

Analysis and effective separation of toxic pollutants from water resources using MBBR: Pathway prediction using alkaliphilic P. mendocina

Azo dyes are highly toxic, which acts as a notable mutagen and carcinogen. This has a significant effect on human health, plants, animals, aquatic and terrestrial environments. Thus, the degradation of the azo dyes is exclusively studied using the conventional methods of which biodegradation is an eco-friendly approach. Hence, the present study is focused on the elucidation of reactive mixed azo dye degradation pathway using MBBR and laccase enzyme produced by an alkaliphilic bacterium P. mendocina. Synthetic wastewater treatment performed using MBBR was very effective which reduced the COD and BOD to 90 mg/L and 460 mg/L. The potential degrader P. mendocina was isolated and laccase enzyme was screened. Finally, the degradation pathway was elucidated. The in silico toxicity analysis predicted Reactive Red and Reactive Brown as developmental toxicants during Reactive Black as Developmental non-toxicant. Docking studies were performed to understand interaction of laccase with compounds evolved from dyes.

Adsorptive removal of Pb(II) ions onto surface modified adsorbents derived from Cassia fistula seeds: Optimization and modelling study

Cassia fistula seeds has been utilized for the abstraction of Pb(II) ions from the aqueous environment. Raw Cassia fistula seeds (RCF) and three different surface modified (physically treated - PMCF and chemically treated - HMCF and SMCF) adsorbent material were taken for investigation. The adsorption properties of these materials and their contact amongst the Pb(II) ion and sorbent materials were characterized by FTIR and SEM analysis. The parameters influencing the adsorption capacity of varied adsorbents were evaluated: maximum solution pH for Pb(II) is 5.0; interactive time is 30 min; dosage is 8.0 g/L for RCF, 4.0 g/L for HMCF, 2.5 g/L for PMCF and 1.0 g/L for SMCF. The modelling study reveals that Freundlich isotherm and Pseudo first order kinetics fits well and the utmost adsorption measurements for the varied adsorbents were found to be 13.22, 28.28, 48.66 and 129.3 mg/g, respectively.

A review on the microbial degradation of chlorpyrifos and its metabolite TCP

Chlorpyrifos (CPF) falls under the category of organophosphorus pesticides which are in huge demand in the agricultural sector. Overuse of this pesticide has led to the degradation of the quality of terrestrial and aquatic life. The chemical is moderately persistent in the environment but its primary metabolite 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) is comparatively highly persistent. Thus, it is important to degrade the chemical and there are many proposed techniques of degradation. Out of which bioremediation is considered to be highly cost-effective and efficient. Many previous studies have attempted to isolate appropriate microbial strains to degrade CPF which established the fact that chlorine atoms released while mineralising TCP inhibits further proliferation of microorganisms. Thus, it has been increasingly important to experiment with strains that can simultaneously degrade both CPF and TCP. In this review paper, the need for degrading CPF specifically the problems related to it has been discussed elaborately. Alongside these, the metabolism pathways undertaken by different kinds of microorganisms have been included. This paper also gives a detailed insight into the potential strains of microorganisms which has been confirmed through experiments conducted previously. It can be concluded that a wide range of microorganisms has to be studied to understand the possibility of applying bioremediation in wastewater treatment to remove pesticide residues. In addition to this, in the case of recalcitrant pesticides, options of treating it with hybrid techniques like bioremediation clubbed with photocatalytic biodegradation can be attempted.

Advances in biosorbents for removal of environmental pollutants: A review on pretreatment, removal mechanism and future outlook

Environmental pollutants are a serious threat for decades causing contamination of soil and water systems. The release from various industries is the main source of these pollutants. Biosorption has been accepted as an alternative eco-friendly green technology for the removal of various pollutants utilizing microbes such as bacteria, fungi and algae, and yeasts. This review features on overview of studies on materials as biosorbents, their pretreatment process, desorption of adsorbed pollutants from biosorbents, and safe disposal of biosorbent material in detail. Pretreatment is mainly performed for increasing the efficiency and adsorption rate which can be performed using various methods. Desorbing eluents can be used for recovering adsorbed pollutants and regeneration of biosorbents can be performed chemically, thermally, or electrochemical methods. In the case of large-scale commercial utilization of biosorbents, final disposal of biosorbents without any effects has paid better attention. Cost is also one of the major factors and it has an impact on the overall economy of the biosorption process. Additional efforts are required for discovering novel biosorbent materials and desorbing eluents for an economically feasible and efficient treatment process.

Cephalexin removal by a novel Cu-Zn bionanocomposite biosynthesized in secondary metabolic products of Aspergillus arenarioides EAN603 with pumpkin peels medium: Optimization, kinetic and artificial neural network models

The present study aimed to investigate the removal efficiency of cephalexin (CFX) by a novel Cu-Zn bionanocomposite biosynthesized in the secondary metabolic products of Aspergillus arenarioides EAN603 with pumpkin peels medium (CZ-BNC-APP). The optimization study was performed based on CFX concentrations (1, 10.5 and 20 ppm); CZ-BNC-APP dosage (10, 55 and 100 mg/L); time (10, 55 and 100 min), temperature (20, 32.5 and 45 °C). The artificial neural network (ANN) model was used to understand the CFX behavior for the factors affecting removal process. The CZ-BNC-APP showed an irregular shape with porous structure and size between 20 and 80 nm. The FTIR detected CC, C-O and OH groups. ANN model revealed that CZ-BNC-APP dosage exhibited the vital role in the removal process, while the removal process having a thermodynamic nature. The CFX removal was optimized with 12.41 ppm CFX, 60.60 mg/L of CZ-BNC-APP, after 97.55 min and at 35 °C, the real maximum removal was 95.53% with 100.52 mg g^-1 of the maximum adsorption capacity and 99.5% of the coefficient. The adsorption of CFX on CZ-BNC-APP was fitted with pseudo-second-order model and both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms models. These findings revealed that CZ-BNC-APP exhibited high potential to remove CFX.
