Abstract
BACKGROUND Schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) shares social deficits and cognitive impairment with schizophrenia, but is not typically characterized by frank psychosis. Because striatal size and functional activity have both been shown to be associated with psychotic symptoms, we carried out the first study of SPD to assess the caudate and putamen for comparison with findings in schizophrenia. METHODS Patients with SPD (n = 16), schizophrenic patients (n = 42), and age- and sex-matched normal control subjects (n = 47) were assessed with magnetic resonance imaging. All of the patients with SPD and subsamples of the schizophrenic patients (n = 27) and control subjects (n = 32) were also assessed with positron emission tomography using fluorodeoxyglucose F-18. RESULTS The relative size of the putamen in controls was significantly larger than in patients with SPD and significantly smaller than in schizophrenic patients, while the relative size of the caudate was similar in all 3 groups. Compared with control values, relative glucose metabolic rate in the ventral putamen was significantly elevated in patients with SPD and reduced in schizophrenic patients. When subsamples of schizophrenic patients (n = 10) and patients with SPD (n = 10) both of whom never received medication were compared, this pattern was more marked, with the highest value for the putamen being found in patients with SPD for the ventral slice and the lowest value for the right dorsal putamen. CONCLUSIONS Patients with SPD showed reduced volume and elevated relative glucose metabolic rate of the putamen compared with both schizophrenic patients and controls. These alterations in volume and activity may be related to the sparing of patients with SPD from frank psychosis.

Abstract
This study examines the degree to which two putative biologically influenced personality traits, affective instability and impulsive aggression, are associated with some of the interpersonal and intrapsychic disturbances of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and with choice of defense mechanism. In a sample of 152 personality disorder patients, affective instability and impulsive aggression were measured. Defense mechanisms were assessed in 140 of these patients using the Defensive Style Questionnaire (DSQ). The correlations between the traits of affective instability and impulsive aggression and the eight DSM-III-R criteria for borderline personality disorder and 20 DSQ defenses were examined. Affective instability was significantly correlated with the DSM-III-R criteria of identity disturbance, chronic emptiness or boredom, inappropriate anger, suicidality, and the affective instability criteria. It also was associated with the defenses of splitting, projection, acting out, passive aggression, undoing, and autistic fantasy. Impulsive aggression was related to unstable interpersonal relationships, inappropriate anger and impulsiveness and with the defense of acting out. It was negatively correlated with the defenses of suppression and reaction formation. A number of the interpersonal and experiential disturbances and defense mechanisms that are features of BPD are associated with the traits of affective instability and impulsive aggression among patients with personality disorders.

Abstract
Argentine ants, Linepithema humile, were attacked by their nestmates following contact with a particular prey item, the brown-banded cockroach, Supella longipalpa. Contact with prey, as brief as 2 min, provoked nestmate aggression. Argentine ants contaminated with hydrocarbons extracted from S. longipalpa also released nestmate aggression behavior similar to that released by the whole prey item, confirming the involvement of hydrocarbons. In contrast to S. longipalpa, little or no nestmate aggression was induced by other ant prey from diverse taxa. A comparison of prey hydrocarbon profiles revealed that all hydrocarbons of S. longipalpa were very long chain components with 33 or more carbons, while other prey had either less, or none, of the very long chain hydrocarbons of 33 carbons or greater. We identified the hydrocarbons of S. longipalpa and some new groups of long chain hydrocarbons of L. humile. The majority of S. longipalpa hydrocarbons were 35 and 37 carbons in length with one to three methyl branches, and closely resembled two previously unidentified groups of compounds from L. humile of similar chain length. The hydrocarbons of S. longipalpa and L. humile were compared and their role in the Argentine ant nestmate recognition is discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicidality and impulsive aggression are partially heritable, and postmortem brain studies suggest that abnormalities in serotonin 1B may be associated with suicide. Studies of serotonin 1B "knockout" mice show an increase in aggressive behavior relative to wild-type mice. METHODS We assessed the relationship between genotype at the HTR1B locus and both suicide history and impulsive aggression in personality disorders. RESULTS The "G" allele of a polymorphic gene at the HTR1B locus was associated with a history of suicide attempts in white patients with personality disorders [chi(2)(1) = 9.3, p =.01, n = 90]. No relationship was found between HTR1B genotype and self-reported impulsive aggression. CONCLUSIONS This preliminary finding suggests that allelic variability at the HTR1B locus may be associated with the susceptibility to suicide attempts in patients with personality disorders.

Abstract
Liquids and gels are common delivery forms used in commercial ant baits, but the relative effectiveness of each is unknown. We compared the feeding responses of the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile (Mayr), to liquid and gel compositions of sucrose. In choice assays, more workers were counted on gel than liquid; however, substantially more liquid was consumed. Because workers could stand on the gel, more workers could feed simultaneously on the gel. The feeding bouts of individual workers, however, were much less efficient at extracting sucrose in gel form. Workers fed eightfold longer on the gel, yet removed fivefold less sucrose than workers feeding on liquid. This potential bias should be considered during attraction and palatability studies that use physically different bait compositions. When the toxicant fipronil was added to the compositions, a greater proportion of the colony died after workers had fed on liquid than gel baits. This finding suggests that liquid formulations may provide more effective control of Argentine ants due to the greater speed and abundance in which it is ingested.

Abstract
The volumes of the whole temporal lobe, the superior temporal gyrus and the corpus callosum were measured on magnetic resonance images from 13 patients with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), 27 patients with schizophrenia, and 31 age- and sex-matched controls. Temporal lobe structures were traced on consecutive 1.2mm thick SPGR images. Both patient groups had smaller temporal lobes than normal volunteers, a difference that was more marked for the area outside the superior temporal gyrus than for the STG. Correcting for brain volume diminished differences between normal subjects and schizophrenia patients, but the differences between normal subjects and SPD patients remained. Normal volunteers and SPD patients showed significant correlations between the sagittal section area of the posterior portion of the corpus callosum, which carries temporal interhemispheric connections, and the white matter volume of the temporal lobe. While the sample size is modest, taken together, these results suggest that the psychopathological symptoms of SPD may be related to temporal gray matter loss with relatively intact white matter connectivity, while the cognitive and psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia may be related to temporal gray loss combined with disruption of normal patterns of white matter development.

Abstract
There is evidence that reduced cholinergic activity may play a role in the pathophysiology of cognitive impairment in the schizophrenia spectrum. We tested the effects of physostigmine, an anticholinesterase inhibitor, on visuospatial working memory as evaluated by the Dot test, and on verbal learning and recall as measured by a serial learning task in patients with schizotypal personality disorder. Physostigmine tended to improve the Dot test, but not serial verbal learning performance in these patients.

Abstract
Discriminating nestmates from alien conspecifics via chemical cues is recognized as a critical element in maintaining the integrity of insect societies. We determined, in laboratory experiments, that nestmate recognition in an introduced population of the Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, is modified by hydrocarbons acquired from insect prey, and that workers from spatially isolated colony fragments, each provided with prey that possessed distinct cuticular hydrocarbons, displayed aggressive behavior towards their former nestmates. Isolation for 28 days or more between colony fragments fed different prey was sufficient to prevent re-establishment of inter-nest communication for at least an additional 28 days through the introduction of a bridge between the nests. Ants possessed intrinsic cuticular hydrocarbons plus only those hydrocarbons from the prey they received during the isolation period. Colony fragments which were isolated for less than 28 days reunited with workers possessing both prey hydrocarbons. Therefore, L. humile nestmate recognition may be dynamic, being in part dependent on the spatio-temporal distribution of prey, along with physical factors permitting or restricting access of subcolony units to those prey.

Abstract
Nestmate recognition plays a key role in the behavior and evolution of social insects. We demonstrated that hydrocarbons are the chemical cues used in Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, nestmate recognition, and that these hydrocarbons can be acquired from insect prey. Consequently, Argentine ant cuticular hydrocarbon patterns reveal the same hydrocarbons present in their diet. Diet alters both the recognition cues present on the cuticular surface and the response of nestmates to this new colony odor, resulting in aggression between former nestmates reared on different insect prey.

Abstract
The size and shape of the corpus callosum were assessed on sagittal section magnetic resonance images in 27 patients with schizophrenia, 13 patients with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), and 30 healthy volunteers. High-resolution 1.2mm axial SPGR images were acquired and resectioned so that the sagittal plane passed through the anterior and posterior commissures and was parallel to the interhemispheric fissure. The corpus callosum and the whole brain were traced on midsagittal section slices of each brain, and the callosum was divided into 30 anteroposterior sectors. Pixel-by-pixel chi-square and thin-plate spline analyses were used to assess between-group shape differences. Size of the corpus callosum was smaller anteriorly in the genu of the corpus callosum and posteriorly in the splenium in schizophrenic patients than in normal controls. The genu of the corpus callosum was larger in SPD patients than in schizophrenic patients or normal controls. The posterior corpus callosum was largest in normal controls, smaller in SPD patients, and smallest in schizophrenic patients. Shape analysis was consistent with these size comparisons, and suggested a downward bowing of the corpus callosum in schizophrenic and SPD patients. SPD patients also had a region of the callosum just posterior to the genu that was narrower than in the other two groups. The decreases in corpus callosal size in schizophrenia varied directly with length of illness, perhaps indicative of a progressive process. The patient-control differences in callosal size and shape are consistent with a hypothesis of decreased connectivity between the left and the right hemispheres in schizophrenia and SPD.
