Abstract
Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins have been generated as unwanted by-products in many industrial processes. Although their widespread distribution in different environmental compartments has been recognized, little is known about their fate in the ultimate environment sinks. The highly stable dioxin isomer 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) has been called the most toxic compound known to man. In this laboratory microcosm study, TCDD bioavailability was evaluated under five reduction/oxidation (redox) conditions including aerobic biodegradation, aerobic cometabolism, methanogenesis, iron reduction, and reductive dechlorination. Activated sludge and aquifer sediments from a TCDD and a pentachlorophenol (PCP) contaminated site were used as the inocula. Acetate, sludge cake, and cane molasses were used as the primary substrates (carbon sources) in cometabolism and reductive dechlorination microcosms. After a 90-day incubation period, microcosms constructed under reductive dechlorination conditions were the only treatment showing promising remediation results. The highest TCDD degradation rate [up to 86% of TCDD removal (with an initial concentration of 96 microg/kg of soil)] was observed in the microcosms with anaerobic activated sludge as the microbial inocula and sludge cakes as the primary substrates. Except for reductive dechlorination microcosms, no significant TCDD removal was observed in the microcosms prepared under other conditions. Thus, application of an effective primary substrate to enhance the reductive dechlorination process is a feasible method for TCDD bioremediation. Bioremediation expense can be significantly reduced by the supplement of some less expensive alternative substrates (e.g., sludge cakes, cane molasses). Results would be useful in designing a scale-up in situ or on-site bioremediation system such as bioslurry reactor for field application.

Abstract
Chronic liver disease and its complications are major problems in renal transplant recipients. Our aim was to elucidate the influence of hepatitis B, C virus infection on the long-term outcome of renal transplantation. Four hundred and seventy-seven patients who received renal transplantation between January 1984 and December 1999, and who were followed up at our hospital were enrolled. HBsAg was detected by the RIA method and anti-HCV Ab was assayed by the second-generation RIA kit. SGOT/ SGPT were checked every 3 months. Hepatoma was diagnosed by dynamic CT scan, elevated alpha-fetoprotein, hypervascularity by angiography and confirmed by pathological examination. The prevalence of HBV, HCV, coinfected HBV/HCV was 9.9% (n = 47), 28.5% ( n = 136), 3.1% (n = 15), respectively. The incidences of hepatoma in the HBV-/HCV-, HBV-/HCV+, HBV+/HCV-, HBV+/HCV+ groups were 1.4% (n = 4), 4.4% (n = 6), 6.4% (n = 3), 6.7% (n = 1), respectively (p = 0.114). The incidences of liver cirrhosis/hepatic failure were 3.2% (n = 9), 6.6% (n = 9), 21.3% (n = 10), 20% (n = 3), respectively (p < 0.001). The frequencies of chronic liver disease were 10.4% (n = 29), 45.6% (n = 62), 66% (n = 31), 80% (n = 12), respectively (p < 0.001). Patient and graft survival rates were lower in the HBV-infected group than in the other groups. Cox regression analysis revealed that HBV infection is likely an independent risk factor for patient mortality although the statistical significance was only borderline. Patients with HBV as well as HCV infection were not at risk of graft loss according to this model of analysis. Patients with HBV infection showed higher incidences of hepatoma, hepatic failure, graft failure and death. Therefore, HBV-infected patients who are candidates for renal transplantation should be carefully evaluated. It seems that HCV infection has little influence on the outcome of renal transplant recipients. A longer period of follow-up is needed to clarify the impact of HCV on renal transplant recipients.

Abstract
A series of acyclic enediynes, 2-((6-substituted)-3-hexen-1,5-diynyl)benzonitriles (8--11), display potent inhibition against topoisomerase I without the formation of active biradical intermediates and show inhibitory activity against topoisomerase I at 10 microM, which is five times that of camptothecin from the results of agarose gel electrophoresis.

Abstract
A renal allograft transplant patient with high serum creatinine presented clinical symptoms of rejection. Sections of renal biopsy tissue showed mononuclear leukocyte infiltration in the tubulointerstitium and nuclear enlargement with inclusions in the tubular epithelium. The morphological characteristics resembled polyomavirus-induced interstitial nephritis. Electron microscopy of the nuclear inclusions showed paracrystalline arrays of naked viral particles with a diameter of 45 nm. Molecular studies revealed that a new variant of BK virus (BKV) with rearrangement at the regulatory region was involved in the nephritis. The BKV regulatory region contained a tandem repeat from the P-block to the Q-block causing duplication of several important transcriptional elements or transcriptional factor binding motifs. This is the first report to show a naturally occurring BKV variant with regulatory region rearrangement associated with tubulointerstitial nephritis.

Abstract
A quantitative scoring method was designed to assess the extent of muscle damage. Technetium-99m pyrophosphate (99mTc-PYP) scintigraphy was performed for 9 patients experiencing crush injury in the Chichi (Taiwan) earthquake. The magnitude of muscle uptake of 99mTc-PYP was graded as follows: grade 0, less than bone radioactivity (BRA); grade 1, equal to BRA; grade 2, higher than BRA; or grade 3, greatly higher than BRA. The area of muscle injury was estimated according to the rule of nines. The sum of the muscle injury size multiplied by its corresponding grading was defined as the anterior or posterior score according to the anterior or posterior images. Each image was interpreted by two physicians and average anterior and posterior scores were calculated. The muscle score was defined as the geometric mean of the average anterior and posterior scores. Significant correlations were obtained between the muscle score and duration of time trapped (r = 0.868, p < 0.01), peak serum creatine kinase level (r = 0.866, p < 0.01), peak serum phosphorus level (r = 0.877, p < 0.01) and number of hospital days (r = 0.875, p < 0.01). A negative correlation between the muscle score and blood pH (r = -0.706, p < 0.01) was also observed. We concluded that this scoring method may be used as an adjunct for evaluating the locations of trauma and the severity of crush syndrome, and for predicting the duration of hospital stay.

Abstract
Agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution is considered to be the largest single category resulting in water quality deterioration. Pesticide is one of the main detrimental agricultural NPS constituents causing the impairment of water bodies. In this study, a mountainous wetland located in McDowell County, North Carolina, was selected to demonstrate the effects of the natural wetland system on the removal of NPS pesticide (atrazine) pollution to maintain the surface water quality. The selected wetland receives water from two unnamed creeks, which drain primarily agricultural lands. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) for the wetland was approximately 10.5 days based on the results from a dye release study. Water quality monitoring of the wetland was conducted from March to October 1998. One major storm and baseline water quality samples were analyzed. Analytical results indicate that the wetland completely removed NPS atrazine flushed from the upgradient agricultural lands. Laboratory microcosm experiments were conducted to evaluate the feasibility of using the wetland sediments as the microbial sources to enhance the atrazine biodegradation. Microcosm results suggest that atrazine can be degraded under anaerobic or reductive dechlorinating conditions when sucrose was provided as the primary substrate. Atrazine can also serve as the nitrogen source for the growth of microorganisms under anaerobic conditions. Results from this study can provide us with further knowledge on evaluating the role of wetlands in controlling pesticide pollutants from stormwater runoff.

Abstract
Wetland creation and restoration is a reliable and efficient technology for the remediation of contaminated water. Knowledge from the natural wetland systems would be necessary to enhance the operational efficiency of constructed wetlands. In this study, a mountainous wetland located in McDowell County, North Carolina, USA was selected to demonstrate the effects of the natural filtration and restoration system on the maintenance of surface water quality. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) for the wetland was 10.5 days based on the results from a dye release study. Water quality monitoring of the wetland was conducted from May to August 1997. One major storm event and baseline water quality samples were collected and analyzed. Analytical results indicate that this wetland removed a significant amount of non-point source (NPS) pollutants [more than 80% N removal, 91% of total suspended solid removal, 59% of total phosphorus removal, and 66% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal] caused by the studied storm event. Sediment accretion monitoring results indicate that the accretion rate in the wetland was only 4 mm/year. Therefore, the wetland would require 100 years to fill at the measured sediment accretion rate. The high organic content of sediments (16%) indicates that the wetland is building the characteristic organic layer on the bottom of the wetland. Results from this study would be very useful in the maintenance of natural wetlands and design of constructed wetlands for water treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM The purpose of this study was to evaluate pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) for distinguishing between relapse and reinfection of Staphylococcus aureus infections in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). METHODS Between July 1993 and May 1997, 4 patients with recurrent CAPD-associated infections caused by S. aureus we enrolled in this study. There were nine episodes of peritonitis, one episode of temporary double lumen catheter infection, and one episode of Hickman catheter infection. A total of eleven S. aureus isolates were collected from peritoneal fluid (n = 9) and blood (n = 2). PFGE typing was applied. RESULTS In our study, from PFGE typing, the 11 S. aureus isolates were classified into seven patterns. Antibiogram profiling classified only four patterns. Patient A had a reinfection by another strain of S. aureus, and patient B had three episodes of peritonitis caused by the same strain of S. aureus due to exit site infections. Patient C had two episodes of CAPD peritonitis caused by two different strains, respectively. Patient D had four episodes of S. aureus infection (three CAPD peritonitis and one bacteremia); the first two episodes of peritonitis were caused by an identical strain of S. aureus, whereas the subsequent two infections were caused by other organisms. CONCLUSION PFGE has a high discriminatory power and can be an assistant method to antibiogram profiling for distinguishing relapse from reinfection in CAPD-associated peritonitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is evident that cytokines play an important role in the pathogenesis as well as disease progression in IgA nephropathy (IgAN). The level of cytokine production is influenced by different genotypes that reflect gene polymorphism of the pertinent cytokine. Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) gene polymorphism have been found to affect disease susceptibility and activity in several inflammatory diseases. However, the impact of these polymorphisms in IgAN patients has not previously been thoroughly studied. METHODS We investigated 111 cases of biopsy-proven IgAN and 100 healthy, normal controls for their IL-1ra and TNF-alpha gene polymorphism. IL-1ra gene polymorphism was characterized as a variable number of tandem repeats of a 86 bp sequence within intron 2. Five alleles were identified and were designated as IL1RN*1, IL1RN*2, IL1RN*3, IL1RN*4, and IL1RN*5, corresponding to 4, 2, 5, 3, 6 repeats, respectively. A polymorphism in the promoter region of the TNF-alpha gene was also studied. This polymorphism involved a guanidine to adenosine transition at position -308 and was designated as TNF1 (-308G) and TNF2 (-308A). RESULTS There were 54 male and 57 female patients with a mean age of 30.3 +/- 12.5 years and a disease duration of 66. 8 +/- 47.2 months. The mean duration of the follow-up period was 47. 3 +/- 32.6 months. In the patient group, the allele frequencies of IL1RN*1, IL1RN*2, IL1RN*3, IL1RN*4, and IL1RN*5 were 89.6%, 9.9%, 0%, 0.5%, and 0%, respectively, whereas the corresponding carriage rates were 100%, 19.8%, 0%, 0.9%, and 0%, respectively. An excessive carriage of IL2RN*2 was found in the patients when compared with normal controls (allele frequency, 9.9 vs. 2.5%, P < 0.0001). The allele frequencies of TNF1 and TNF2 were 94.1 and 5.9%, respectively, and the carriage rates were 99.1 and 10.8%, respectively, in the patients, which was not significantly different from those of normal controls. When the patients were stratified into mild and severe groups according to their initial presentation, none of the studied alleles correlated with the severity. However, patients with gross hematuria were associated with a higher carriage rate of TNF2 when compared with patients without gross hematuria (allele frequency, 15. 4 vs. 4.6%, P = 0.0552; carriage rate, 30.8% vs. 8.2%, P = 0.0272). Renal survival analysis revealed that the TNF2 carrier had a renal survival comparable with TNF2 (-) patients. However, the carriage of the IL1RN*2 allele was associated with a significantly poorer long-term outcome with a median survival time of 72 months, as compared with those without IL1RN*2 (134 months, P < 0.01). CONCLUSION IL-1ra and TNF-alpha gene polymorphism may affect disease susceptibility as well as disease activity and long-term outcome in human IgAN. Treatment with an IL-1ra or IL-1 blocking agent may be relevant in those carrying the IL1RN*2 allele.

Abstract
The dioxin isomer 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) has been called the most toxic compound known to man. Because of its poor bioavailability and low biodegradibility, bioremediation technology cannot effectively degrade TCDD when used alone. In this study, chemical pretreatment (partial oxidation) in combination with biodegradation technique was developed to efficiently remediate TCDD-contaminated soils. An oxidizing reagent [Fenton's Reagent (FR)] was applied in a slurry reactor to transform TCDD with a concentration of 96 microg per kg of soil to compounds more amenable to biodegradation. Up to 99% TCDD was transformed after the chemical pretreatment process. The slurry reactor was then converted to a bioreactor for the following biodegradation experiment. The detected TCDD oxidation byproducts including chlorophenols (CPs) and chlorobenzenes (CBs) were transformed in this bioreactor under aerobic conditions. Two other biodegradation experiments were performed in parallel to investigate the biodegradabiliy of TCDD under aerobic and anaerobic conditions without chemical pretreatment. Approximately 53% TCDD was transformed under anaerobic conditions possibly due to the reductive dechlorination process using organic materials contained in the activated sludge as the primary substrates. No TCDD degradation was observed under aerobic conditions. Results show that FR can oxidize TCDD to less-chlorinated and less-toxic byproducts, promoting their bioavailability to microbial communities. The bench-scale results indicate that the two-stage (partial oxidation followed by biodegradation) system has the potential to be developed to remediate TCDD-contaminated soils on-site.

Abstract
G(h) is a dual function protein. It has receptor signaling activity that requires GTP binding and Ca(2+)-activated transglutaminase (TGase) activity that is inhibited by GTP binding. G(h) shows no homology with other GTP-binding proteins, and its GTP-binding site has not been defined. Based on sequence analysis of [alpha-(32)P]GTP-photolabeled and proteolytically released internal peptide fragments, we report localization of GTP binding to a 15-residue segment ((159)YVLTQQGFIYQGSVK(173)) of the G(h) core domain. This was confirmed by site-directed mutagenesis; a G(h)/fXIIIA chimera (in which residues 162-179 of G(h) were substituted with the equivalent but nonhomologous region of the non-GTP-binding TGase factor XIIIA) and a G(h) point mutant, S171E, retained TGase activity but failed to bind and hydrolyze GTP and did not support alpha(1B)-adrenergic receptor signaling. Slight impairment of GTP binding (1.5-fold) and hydrolysis (10-fold) in the absence of altered TGase activity did not affect signaling by the mutant K173N. However, greater impairment of GTP binding (6-fold) and hydrolysis (50-fold) abolished signaling by the mutant K173L. Mutant S171C exhibited enhanced GTP binding and signaling. Thus, residues Ser(171) and Lys(173) are critical for both GTP binding and signaling but not TGase activity. Mutagenesis of residues N-terminal to Gly(170) impaired both GTP binding and TGase activity. From computer modeling of G(h), it is evident that the GTP-binding region identified here is distinct from, but interacts with, the TGase active site. Together with structural considerations of G(h) versus other GTP-binding proteins, these findings indicate that G(h) has a unique GTP-binding pocket and provide for the first time a mechanism for GTP-mediated regulation of the TGase activity of G(h).

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the exposure of synthetic leather workers to dimethylformamide (DMF), epichlorohydrin (ECH) and toluene, in a manufacturing plant. The correlation between biological and environmental monitoring for DMF was also investigated. Environmental monitoring of the three solvents included personal and area sampling based on time of day (morning and afternoon). Urine samples were taken at the end of the shift and urinary N-methylformamide (NMF) was then used to biologically monitor DMF levels. Results for solvent concentrations based on air sampling were considerably higher in area than in personal sampling. Of 41 area samples, 15 (36.6%) and five (12.2%) exceeded permissible exposure levels for DMF and ECH, respectively, compared with 22 (28.6%) and three (3.9%) based on 77 personal samples. Overall, urinary NMF concentrations were lower than the Biological Exposure Index (BEI) suggested by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). A significant correlation (r = 0.32; P < 0.05) was found between environmental and biological monitoring. Even though urinary NMF concentration was within permissible levels for Taiwan, the authors recommend that immediate measures be taken to decrease DMF and ECH concentrations in synthetic leather manufacturing plants.

Abstract
We studied the prevalence and the clinical spectrum of cryoglobulinemia (Cryo) among 101 maintenance hemodialysis (HD) patients and 148 kidney transplant (KT) recipients, with or without chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Cryo was present in 32% (16 of 50) of the HCV-positive HD patients, 5.9% (3 of 51) of the HCV-negative HD patients, 37.8% (28 of 74) of the HCV-positive KT recipients, and 27% (20 of 74) of the HCV-negative KT recipients. Cryoprecipitate in 56.3% (9 of 16) of the HCV-positive Cryo HD patients and 53.8% (14 of 26) of the HCV-positive Cryo KT recipients contained HCV-RNA. Interestingly, the cryocrit values among HD and KT patients were much lower than these in other reports on nonrenal failure cases. Also, the cryoglobulinemic syndrome (with purpura, arthralgia, etc.) in HD and KT patients with Cryo were not common (Tables 1 and 2). There was not correlation between Cryo and age,sex, and liver function. Only longer duration of end-stage renal disease was noted in these patients. In addition, we suggested that KT patients are more susceptible to having Cryo. Further studies are necessary to better define whether any other subclinical viral or nonviral chronic infection may induce Cryo in HCV-negative KT recipients.

Abstract
The shortage of donor kidneys available for transplantation has resulted in an expansion of the criteria used for donor selection. The use of cadaveric pediatric kidneys has been suggested as a means to overcome this shortage, but is debated because of technical complications and an increased incidence of functional allograft impairment. We examined the records of all adult patients receiving renal allograft transplants from January, 1983 through December 1994, to determine whether kidneys from pediatric donors can be used safely for transplantation. During the study period, 204 adult patients received kidney transplants. The patients were divided into three groups by donor age: group 1, 26 months to 7 years old (n = 12); group 2, 7 to 14 years old (n = 19); and group 3, adult donors (n = 173). Cyclosporine- and/or azathioprine-based immunosuppression regimens were used. The three groups did not differ from one anther with respect to recipient age, recipient sex, primary renal disease, human leukocyte antigen (HLA) mismatching, or the proportion of recipients with previous transplants. The graft survival rates at 1 and 3 years, respectively, were 75% and 75% in group 1,84% and 79% in group 2, and 85% and 72% in group 3 (p > 0.05). The patient survival rates at 1 and 3 years, respectively, were 75% and 75% in group 1,95% and 90% in group 2, and 90% and 83% in group 3 (p > 0.05). The frequency of fixed proteinuria (> or = 0.8 gm/day) in the first 3 years was higher in the two pediatric groups (50%) than in the adult group (28%) (p < 0.05). The frequency of surgical complications was higher with pediatric grafts (group 1 vs group 3: 67% vs 24%, p < 0.005). In particular, group 1 patients had much higher rates of lymphocele (50% vs 8%), renal graft artery stenosis (33% vs 11%), and hydronephrosis (33% vs 9%) than group 3. We conclude that pediatric donor kidneys can be used with reasonable safety, although surgical complications remain a major problem.

Four new compounds, a mixture of 20,23-cis-2,4-trans-bullatalicinone (1) and 20,23-cis-2,4-cis-bullatalicinone (2), rollimusin (3), and rolliacocin (4), along with eight known acetogenins, were isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of the unripe fruits of Rollinia mucosa. The structures and stereochemistry of 1-4 were determined on the basis of spectral data and chemical evidence.

Abstract
Machado-Joseph disease (MJD)/spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) is caused by unstable CAG trinucleotide repeat expansion in the coding region of the MJD gene. In this study, we describe a non-radioactive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method to detect the CAG repeat range of the MJD gene. This technique allows direct visualization of the PCR products on ethidium bromide-stained agarose gels within hours. In this study, genomic DNA samples isolated from peripheral lymphocytes, amniotic fluid cells, and chorionic villi were tested with two sets of commonly used MJD primers. PCR conditions were optimized, which resulted in clear visualization of both the primer sets on 3% agarose gels. Ten out of 25 candidate MJD patients have been identified with this method to date, with no false-positive or false-negative diagnoses. This simple, reliable, and cost-effective method can be used for patient diagnosis, pre-symptomatic diagnosis, and prenatal diagnosis.

Abstract
Skeletal muscle hypertrophy and regeneration are important adaptive responses to both physical activity and pathological stimuli. Failure to maintain these processes underlies the loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength that occurs with ageing and in myopathies. Here we show that stable expression of a gene encoding insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in C2C12 skeletal muscle cells, or treatment of these cells with recombinant IGF-1 or with insulin and dexamethasone, results in hypertrophy of differentiated myotubes and a switch to glycolytic metabolism. Treatment with IGF-1 or insulin and dexamethasone mobilizes intracellular calcium, activates the Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent phosphatase calcineurin, and induces the nuclear translocation of the transcription factor NF-ATc1. Hypertrophy is suppressed by the calcineurin inhibitors cyclosporin A or FK506, but not by inhibitors of the MAP-kinase or phosphatidylinositol-3-OH kinase pathways. Injecting rat latissimus dorsi muscle with a plasmid encoding IGF-1 also activates calcineurin, mobilizes satellite cells and causes a switch to glycolytic metabolism. We propose that growth-factor-induced skeletal-muscle hypertrophy and changes in myofibre phenotype are mediated by calcium mobilization and are critically regulated by the calcineurin/NF-ATc1 signalling pathway.

[reaction: see text] Treatment of 2-((3Z)-undecene-1,5-diynyl)benzonitrile with 5 equiv of sodium methoxide in refluxing methanol for 16 h gave 1-pentyl-6-methoxyphenanthridine in 12% yield, 1-pentyl-6-phenanthridone in 6% yield, and 2-(2-pentyl-6-methoxyphenyl)benzonitrile in 4% yield. Under the same reaction conditions, methanolysis of several other benzonitriles gave similar results. Phenanthridine and biphenyl derivatives were obtained as the major products. A mechanism for this novel cycloaromatization reaction of enediynes is proposed.

Abstract
AIM To define the long-term outcome of patients with minimal urinary abnormalities (defined by the presence of microscopic hematuria with no or less than 1 gm/day proteinuria), and normal renal function (defined by a serum creatinine < 1.3 mg/dl), we retrospectively studied patients who fulfilled the above criteria and had a kidney biopsy done before the year of 1992 (i.e. at least followed up for 5 years), with a definite pathological diagnosis. METHODS A total of 41 cases among 719 cases of primary glomerulonephritis (5.7%) were enrolled into the study. There were 19 males and 22 females with a mean age of 35.4+/-14.7 years at biopsy. The duration of renal disease was 116.0+/-60.5 months and the duration of follow-up post biopsy was 100.2+/-38.1 months. The pathological diagnosis was: IgA nephropathy (21 cases), focal glomerulosclerosis (9 cases), mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (8 cases), membranous glomerulonephritis (2 cases) and acute glomerulonephritis (1 case). RESULTS At the end of follow-up, 8 cases (19.5%) had a certain degree of renal insufficiency including 2 (4.9%) in end-stage renal disease. The other cases were either in complete remission (6 cases) or stable condition (27 cases) with persistent microscopic hematuria and normal renal function. The long-term outcome was not correlated with any of the following parameters: age, sex, disease duration, serum creatinine at presentation, daily protein loss at presentation, degree of glomerular change and degree of interstitial inflammatory cell infiltration. However, a poor long-term outcome was correlated with tubular atrophy (p < 0.05) and interstitial fibrosis (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION We conclude that a minimal urinary abnormality with normal renal function at presentation does not necessarily imply a favorable long-term outcome in certain patients. Tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis but not glomerular change correlates with a worse prognosis. This further emphasizes the importance of renal biopsy in such cases.

Abstract
Chromatographic fractionation of a MeOH extract from the stems of Annona cherimola led to the isolation of a new non-adjacent, bis-THF ring acetogenin (one THF ring being at C-4 and the other at C-16), aromin-A (1) along with the known cytotoxic acetogenin squamocin (2). The structures of these isolates were established by means of mass spectrometry and spectroscopic techniques.
