Abstract
The relationship between broiler breast meat color and pH, moisture content, water-holding capacity (WHC), and emulsification capacity (EC) was investigated. In each of three replicate trials, fillets were collected from three different commercial processing plants according to breast meat lightness (L*) values as follows: lighter than normal (light, L* > 53), normal (48 < L* < 53), and darker than normal (dark, L* < 46). Color values of lightness (L*), redness (a*), and yellowness (b*) were measured at 0 and 24 h after collection. Fillets were then ground and homogenized prior to determining color, pH, moisture, WHC, and EC of the ground meat. There was a significant difference among the three color groups (light, normal, and dark) in L*, a*, pH, WHC, and EC. The L* values of whole raw breast fillets had significant negative correlation coefficients with ground meat EC (-0.9237), pH (-0.9610), and a* (-0.6540). Emulsification capacity had significant positive correlations with pH (0.9572) and water-holding capacity (0.7080). WHC had significant correlations with a* (0.8143), moisture (-0.7647), and pH (0.7963). Lighter-than-normal meat was associated with low pH, high moisture, low EC, and low WHC. These results indicate that wide differences in raw breast meat color exist and that these differences may be used by poultry further processors as an indicator of fillets with altered functional properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We sought to study arterial endothelial function and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), both early markers of atherosclerosis, in overweight compared to normal children. DESIGN Case-control comparison. SUBJECTS A total of 36 asymptomatic overweight children (body mass index (BMI)>23; mean 25+/-3) aged 9-12 y and 36 age- and gender-matched nonobese healthy children (BMI<21) from a school community. MEASUREMENTS The key parameters were: BMI, arterial endothelial function (ultrasound-derived endothelium-dependent dilation) and carotid artery IMT. The secondary parameters measured included body fat content, waist-hip ratio (WHR), blood pressures, blood lipids, insulin and glucose. RESULTS The two groups were well matched for blood pressures, cholesterol and glucose levels, but BMI (P<0.0001), body fat (P=0.001), WHR (P<0.05), fasting blood insulin (P=0.001) and triglyceride levels (P<0.05) were higher in obese children. Overweight was associated with impaired arterial endothelial function (6.6+/-2.3 vs 9.7+/-3.0%, P<0.0001) and increased carotid IMT (0.49+/-0.04 mm vs 0.45+/-0.04 mm, P=0.006). The degree of endothelial dysfunction correlated with BMI (P<0.003) on multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION Obesity, even of mild-to-moderate degree, is independently associated with abnormal arterial function and structure in otherwise healthy young children.

Abstract
Three replicate trials were conducted to determine the influence of raw breast meat color and pH on subsequent cooked meat color and pH. In each trial, approximately 50 breast fillets were obtained from a commercial processing plant based on being either normal, lighter than normal, or darker than normal. Color (L* = lightness, a* = redness, and b* = yellowness) of each fillet was determined in triplicate on the underside surface of the fillet (to avoid scalding effects), and the pH was determined on a tissue sample removed from the posterior portion of each fillet. Fillets were then cooked in steam at 98 C for 20 min and cooled to room temperature, and a second sample was removed from the posterior section for cooked meat pH. Cooked meat color was measured on an exposed surface, to avoid cooking-related discoloration. The data were subjected to linear regression analysis to determine the relationship between raw and cooked values. Results indicated a significant linear relationship between raw and cooked values for each color parameter as well as pH. Model R2 values were 0.43, 0.40, 0.64, and 0.78 for L*, a*, b*, and pH, respectively. There were also significant linear relationships between raw meat L* and raw muscle pH (R2 = 0.59) as well as cooked meat L* and raw meat pH (R2 = 0.36). These results indicate that raw breast meat color and pH affect cooked breast meat color and pH but that cooking reduces the degree of color variation. Moreover, cooked meat lightness is more closely associated with raw breast meat pH than with cooked meat pH.

Abstract
Fungal hydrophobins are a group of surface active, self-assembling proteins. The filamentous fungus Trichoderma reesei produces two (class II) hydrophobins, HFBI and HFBII. We have studied how these water-soluble hydrophobins behave in two-phase systems using a series of nonionic surfactants with different characteristics. It was found that both hydrophobins, but especially HFBI, had a very high affinity for the surfactants. The highest partitioning coefficient, over 2500, was observed for HFBI with C(11)EO(2). Reducing the disulfides in the protein resulted in a complete loss of affinity for the surfactant, which demonstrates that the interaction is dependent on the disulfide-stabilized conformation. The hydrophobins could be efficiently extracted back from the surfactant phase by addition of alcohols such as isobutanol. Effects of the type of surfactant, temperature, pH, and ionic strength were investigated. The use of this method for purifying the proteins from crude fungal culture supernatants is demonstrated and implications of the protein-polymer interaction are discussed.

Abstract
Experiments were conducted to compare the chemical composition of broiler breast meat that was naturally lighter than normal, normal, and darker than normal. In each of three separate replicated trials (wk), fillets were obtained from three commercial processing plants. Approximately 25 fillets of each color group were selected based on International Commission on Illumination (CIE) lightness values as follows: lighter than normal (L* > 53), normal (48 < L* < 51), and darker than normal (L* < 46). The fillets from each replicate, plant, and color group were ground and mixed together, and samples for the 27 treatment groups subjected to color, pH, and chemical analyses (protein, ash, moisture, total lipids, iron, glycogen, and fatty acids profile). The whole fillets had significantly different color values for the three color groups at 0 and 24 h prior to grinding. Of the ground meat samples, there were significant treatment and plant differences in composition. There were no color treatment effects on moisture, lipid, glycogen, iron, ash, or fatty acid ratios. Meat from the light group had significantly lower protein values than the normal or dark meat and lower ash than the dark group. The light group also had significantly higher levels of C16:1 and lower levels of C18:0 and C20:4 fatty acids than the dark group. Among the three plants, there were significant effects for breast meat color and composition. Results indicated that, although plant had more effect on composition, differences by color group might indicate that extreme variation in color may be due to long-term genetic factors as well as short-term antemortem stress.

Abstract
Upon activation, the enzyme 5-lipoxygenase converts arachidonic acid into principally three products, the peptidoleukotrienes, 5-hydroperoxyeicosatetraenoic acid (5-HETE) or the leukotriene B4. We have shown that the peptido-leukotrienes (known as LTC4, LTD4, or LTE4) and 5-HETE induce osteoclastic bone resorption and that receptors for LTD4 are present on isolated avian osteoclast-like cells. Here, we show the effects of the third metabolic product of the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism, the leukotriene LTB4, on osteoclastic bone resorption both in vivo and in vitro. Because LTB4 production is increased in a number of inflammatory conditions, it may be an important contributor to the bone loss which occurs in these disorders. LTB4 increased osteoclastic bone resorption in vivo following local administration over the calvariae of normal mice and in vitro in organ cultures of neonatal mouse calvariae. When LTB4 was injected over the calvaria of mice, there was a significant increase in bone resorption, osteoclast numbers, and eroded surfaces. LTB4 also increased the formation of resorption lacunae by isolated neonatal rat osteoclasts. Greater potency was observed with LTB4 compared with the peptido-leukotriene LTD4. This is in contrast to prostaglandins of the E series, which are reported to inhibit isolated osteoclasts. Experiments using marrow cultures suggest that LTB4 stimulates bone resorption in part by enhancing the formation of osteoclasts.

Abstract
Matrix vesicles, media vesicles, and plasma membranes from three well-characterized, osteoblast-like cells (ROS 17/2.8, MG-63, and MC-3T3-E1) were evaluated for their content of enzymes capable of processing the extracellular matrix. Matrix vesicles were enriched in alkaline phosphatase specific activity over the plasma membrane and contained fully active neutral, but not acid, metalloproteinases capable of digesting proteoglycans, potential inhibitors of matrix calcification. Matrix vesicle enrichment in neutral metalloproteinase varied with the cell line, whereas collagenase, lysozyme, hyaluronidase, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP) were not found in any of the membrane fractions examined. MC-3T3-E1 cells were cultured for 32 days in the presence of ascorbic acid (100 micrograms/ml), beta-glycerophosphate (5 mM), or a combination of the two, to assess changes in matrix vesicle enzymes during calcification. Ascorbate or beta-glycerophosphate alone had no effect, but in combination produced significant increases in both active and total neutral metalloproteinase in matrix vesicles and plasma membranes, with the change seen in matrix vesicles being the most dramatic. This correlated with an increase in the formation of von Kossa-positive nodules. The results of the present study indicate that osteoblast-like cells produce matrix vesicles enriched in proteoglycan-degrading metalloproteinases. In addition, the observation that matrix vesicles contain significantly increased metalloproteinases under conditions favorable for mineralization in vitro lends support to the hypothesis that matrix vesicles play an important role in extracellular matrix processing and calcification in bone.

Abstract
Three replicate trials were conducted to determine the effect of raw broiler breast meat color on marinated and cooked meat quality. In each trial, 90 fillets were collected from a commercial processing plant based on lightness (L*) values of breast meat as follows: light, L* > 53; normal, 48 < L* < 51; and, dark, L* < 46. For each fillet the color, pH, and weight were determined, and the fillets were marinated in three lots of 10 fillets from each color group (20% wt:wt of 5% salt and 2.5% sodium tripolyphosphate in a vacuum tumbler). Marination uptake was determined; the samples were held for 24 h at 2 C, and color, pH, and weight again were determined. Next, the samples were cooked, and the meat was subjected to color, pH, cooked yield, shear force, and moisture analyses. Results showed that absolute color values changed with marination and cooking, but that L* and pH differences by color group were maintained through marination and cooking. There were also significant differences in marinade absorption, cooked yield, and shear value, particularly among the extremes of light and dark meats. There was no significant difference in final cooked meat moisture. As expected, there were significant negative correlations between meat lightness and pH; however, raw muscle pH was not correlated to final product moisture or shear but was positively correlated to cooked meat yield and negatively correlated to marinade absorption. These results indicate that the pH variation associated with extreme raw breast meat color variation can affect breast meat marination and cooked meat quality.

Abstract
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), one of popular antidepressants as "one-compound-one-target" paradigm, cannot but discontinue because of inhibiting gut movement. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Chaihu-Sugan-San (CSS) can simultaneously exert anti-depression and prokinetics. From this thread, we aimed to find a new antidepressant with polypharmacological mechanisms. In vivo antidepressive and prokinetic comparisons between CSS and its absorbed compound ferulic acid (FA) were made. And FA's action mechanisms involved in monoaminergic systems, HPA axis and gastrointestinal peptide ghrelin was then studied in forced swimming test (FST) of rat. Lastly, the jejunal contraction activity evoked by FA was measured in vitro. Compared with vehicle, FA reduced immobility time, increased locomotor activity, accelerated gastric emptying and intestinal transit similar to CSS whose absorbable component FA was identified in hippocampus and jejunum. FA's prokinetics in vivo was further supported by its jejunal contraction in vitro. FA-induced anti-immobility was prevented by pretreated with PCPA, WAY-100635, ketanserin, sulpiride, SCH233390, haloperidol and yohimbine, respectively. CRH, ACTH and 5-HT were significantly decreased, but ghrelin was apparently increased compared with vehicle. In summary, FA induced anti-depression and prokinetics similar to CSS via inhibiting serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine reuptakes, regulating HPA axis, increasing ghrelin and stimulating jejunal contraction simultaneously.

Abstract
The biosynthesis, immunity and regulation of nisin, a lanthionine-containing antimicrobial peptide produced by Lactococcus lactis, is encoded by two gene clusters, nisA/ZBTCIPRK and nisFEG. The mutant strain LAC46 with a deletion in the translocator gene nisT could not secrete nisin but nisin activity was detected from cell lysates. The nisT mutation was complemented by a NisT-expression plasmid resulting in restored capacity to secrete nisin. These results demonstrate that NisT is the transport protein dedicated to translocate nisin and that dehydration and lanthionine formation in nisin maturation can occur independently of transport.

Abstract
The efficacy of DNA vaccines encoding the duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) pre-S/S and S proteins were tested in Pekin ducks. Plasmid pcDNA I/Amp DNA containing the DHBV pre-S/S or S genes was injected intramuscularly three times, at 3-week intervals. All pre-S/S and S-vaccinated ducks developed total anti-DHBs and specific anti-S antibodies with similar titers reaching 1/10,000 to 1/50,000 and 1/2,500 to 1/4,000, respectively, after the third vaccination. However, following virus challenge, significant differences in the rate of virus removal from the bloodstream and the presence of virus replication in the liver were found between the groups. In three of four S-vaccinated ducks, 90% of the inoculum was removed between <5 and 15 min postchallenge (p.c.) and no virus replication was detected in the liver at 4 days p.c. In contrast, in all four pre-S/S-vaccinated ducks, 90% of the inoculum was removed between 60 and 90 min p.c. and DHBsAg was detected in 10 to 40% of hepatocytes. Anti-S serum abolished virus infectivity when preincubated with DHBV before inoculation into 1-day-old ducklings and primary duck hepatocyte cultures, while anti-pre-S/S serum showed very limited capacity to neutralize virus infectivity in these two systems. Thus, although both DNA vaccines induced high titers of anti-DHBs antibodies, anti-S antibodies induced by the S-DNA construct were highly effective in neutralizing virus infectivity while similar levels of anti-S induced by the pre-S/S-DNA construct conferred only very limited protection. This phenomenon requires further clarification, particularly in light of the development of newer HBV vaccines containing pre-S proteins and a possible discrepancy between anti-HBs titers and protective efficacy.

Abstract
Seven samples of feed- or pet food-grade fats (feed- and pet food-grade poultry greases, restaurant grease, white grease, animal/vegetable oil blend, palm oil, yellow grease) and one food-grade edible fat (soybean oil) were evaluated for quality and fatty acid composition. Active oxygen method (AOM) stability at 20 h ranged from 2 to 370 meq/kg; iodine value from 78 to 130 g/100 g; total moisture, insolubles, and unsaponifiables from 0.46 to 3.33%; initial peroxide values from 0.2 to 18.4 meq/kg; and free fatty acids from 0.08 to 21.0%. The ME of the fats ranged from 7.1 to 12.7 kcal/g and was positively correlated with AOM stability and iodine value. When the fats were incorporated into corn-and-soybean-meal-based diets at 3 or 6%, no differences in live performance due to fat source were observed. Increasing fat level from 3 to 6% decreased feed conversion by 3.4 points (1.628 vs. 1.662 g/g). Feeding feed-grade poultry grease resulted in significantly smaller abdominal fat pads compared to the other fat sources. Only moisture, insolubles, unsaponifiables, and free fatty acids were significantly correlated with performance responses. Differences were noticed in abdominal fat pad color (lightness and redness) due to fat source. Differences in MEn were not reflected in differences in bird performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Age-dependent changes in T2-weighted MR images have been reported in cerebral hypoxia-ischemia. However, the biophysical mechanisms responsible for the image changes remain poorly defined. We investigated whether cerebral hypoxia-ischemia-induced T2 changes correlate with alterations in either water content or protein extravasation. METHODS One- and 4-week-old rats were subjected to unilateral carotid artery occlusion plus hypoxia in 8% oxygen. T2 images were acquired before, during, and 1 or 24 hours after hypoxia-ischemia. Blood-brain barrier disruption and brain edema were evaluated by immunohistological detection of IgG extravasation and measurement of water content by dry-wet weight and specific gravity methods. RESULTS In 1-week-old rats, T2 values, areas of hyperintensity on T2-weighted images, and water content in the ipsilateral hemisphere increased during hypoxia-ischemia, recovered at 1 hour after hypoxia-ischemia, and increased again at 24 hours after hypoxia-ischemia. Extravasation of IgG occurred during hypoxia-ischemia and remained detectable 24 hours after hypoxia-ischemia. In 4-week-old rats, an increase in T2 or extravasation of IgG did not occur until 24 hours after hypoxia-ischemia despite a comparable elevation in water content during and soon after hypoxia-ischemia. CONCLUSIONS T2 imaging appears reliable for detecting edema associated with disruption of the blood-brain barrier but not necessarily an increase in cerebral water or plasma proteins alone. The different hypoxic-ischemic changes in T2 in immature and older brain are associated with differences in alterations in water content plus extravasation of protein, consistent with age-dependent differences in hypoxic-ischemic alterations in vascular permeability.

Abstract
The antibiotic peptide nisin produced by Lactococcus lactis is used as a food preservative due to its activity against spores and vegetative cells of Gram-positive bacteria. The post-translational maturation of this secreted peptide includes dehydration of serine and threonine residues, lanthionine formation and a proteolytic processing of 23 amino acids from the N-terminus. Mutations in the nisZ, nisB and nisP genes of the biosynthetic nisZBTCIPRK nisin operon were made by gene replacement or integration of a plasmid. The mutations caused a drastic decrease of the transcription from the promoters upstream of the nisZBTCIPRK and nisFEG operons resulting in loss of nisin production and nisin immunity. The transcription of the nisin operons and nisin immunity could be partially restored by adding nisin to the growth medium of the cells. Nisin induction of the mutant strains also increased the level of the putative immunity NisI protein. These results showed that the nisZBTCIPRK operon is positively autoregulated and that the nisFEG operon is in the same regulon.

Abstract
An 11.6 kb area downstream from the structural gene of nisin Z in the conjugative nisin-sucrose transposon of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis N8 was cloned and sequenced. Analysis of the sequence revealed eight open reading frames, nisZBTClPRK, followed by a putative rho-independent terminator (delta G degrees = -4.7 kcal/mol). The C-terminal hydrophilic domain of the NisK protein is homologous to the C-termini of several histidine kinases of bacterial two-component regulator systems, such as SpaK from Bacillus subtilis and KdpD and RcsC of Escherichia coli. The nisin Z biosynthetic genes were highly similar with the genes of the nisin A operons having, however, a 0-3% difference in the amino acid sequences of the individual proteins. The codon usage of eleven genes within the same conjugative transposon was calculated and found to be strikingly different from that of other lactococcal genes. This, together with the low GC-content (32%) compared to the 38% (G+C) of the lactococcal chromosome in general strongly suggests a non-lactococcal origin of this transposon.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The extensive involvement of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the pathogenesis of psoriasis is well documented. However, little is known about the contribution of specific miRNAs to the prevalence of this disease. OBJECTIVES To explore the role of miR-145-5p in psoriasis. METHODS miRNA microarray analysis was performed in four patients with psoriasis and four controls. Quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and fluorescence in situ hybridization were used to identify the dysregulated miRNAs. Luciferase assays were performed to determine whether miR-145-5p targets mixed-lineage kinase (MLK)3. CCK-8 assay and Magnetic Luminex Assay were performed to measure cell proliferation and chemokine secretion. Western blot analysis was used to investigate the protein levels of MLK3 and its downstream effectors. Mouse models of psoriasis were established for in vivo experiments. RESULTS miR-145-5p was downregulated in psoriatic lesional skin. Luciferase assays showed that MLK3 is a direct target of miR-145-5p. Overexpression of miR-145-5p in normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEKs) suppressed cell proliferation and secretion of chemokines. In contrast, silencing miR-145-5p promoted NHEK proliferation and increased chemokine secretion. Silencing MLK3 abrogated miR-145-5p inhibitor-induced promotion of cell proliferation and chemokine expression. miR-145-5p regulates nuclear factor-κB and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 by targeting MLK3. Delivery of agomiR-145-5p into the skin decreased epidermal hyperplasia and ameliorated psoriasis-like dermatitis. Delivery of antagomiR-145-5p led to the opposite effects. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that miR-145-5p negatively regulates proliferation and chemokine secretion of NHEKs by targeting MLK3, and downregulation of miR-145-5p contributes to skin inflammation in psoriasis lesions.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether the neuropathologic changes produced by vigabatrin (VGB; gamma-vinyl GABA) administration in the developing rat brain are reversible. METHODS We injected rats daily with VGB (25-40 mg/kg/day, s.c.) from age 12 days for 2 weeks followed by 2 weeks of a drug-free period. Behavioral testing, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, biochemical assays, and histologic technique were used to assess the adverse effect of VGB in developing brain and its reversibility. RESULTS At the end of 2 weeks' VGB administration: (a) there was a hyperactivity and a shortened latency to escape out of cool water; (b) white matter appeared hyperintense in T2 and diffusion-weighted MR images with 4-15% increases in T2; (c) microvacuolation, TUNEL-positive nuclei, and swollen axons were observed in the corpus callosum; (d) myelin staining indicated a reduction in myelination, as did the reduction in activities of myelin and oligodendrocyte-associated enzymes and the decrease in myelin basic protein on Western blots. Two weeks after stopping VGB administration: (a) MR images were normal, and microvacuolation was no longer in the white matter; (b) reduction in myelination reversed partially; (c) the T2 relaxation time remained elevated in the hypothalamus; and (d) the behavioral response remained abnormal. CONCLUSIONS Long-term VGB administration to young rats causes brain injury, which recovers partially on its cessation. The observed cell death, disrupted myelination, and alterations in behavior indicate a need for further safety assessment in infants and children.

Abstract
Diagnosis of Q fever has largely been dependent upon serology, which may lead to delayed diagnosis as seroconversion can take weeks to develop. During a recent Q fever outbreak (27 patients) in rural South Australia, we compared the diagnostic rate of serology with two separate real-time PCRs, the 27kDa outer membrane protein and the insertion sequence. PCR was positive (on either or both PCR assays) in sera of 67% of the patients. Median time required for making serological diagnosis was 17 days, compared with 4 days by PCR. Q fever PCR is an effective tool in the diagnosis of acute Q fever infection.

Abstract
A cell monolayer radioimmunoassay was established to detect hepatitis B virus (HBV)-binding activity. HBV was shown to bind to HepG2 and HuH7 cells, but not to LTK- and HeLa cells. The binding activity was inhibited by peptide 21-47 from the large hepatitis B surface antigen (L-HBsAg) region, but not by other peptides from the L- and middle-HBsAg. A monoclonal antibody to L-HBsAg (MA18/7) and a polyclonal antibody to HBsAg (anti-HBs) also inhibited the binding. However, only the Fab fragment of MA18/7 showed blocking activity, suggesting that these two antibodies may neutralize virus by different mechanisms. Excess HBV was able to saturate the binding activity of HepG2 cells. The virus was also shown to be internalized; virus DNA was detected in the cytoplasmic fraction 1-2 hr postadsorption and was associated with the nuclear fraction 2 hr later. Furthermore, immunoprecipitation experiments showed that the virus DNA remained encapsidated 48 hr after internalization. Nuclear fractionation experiments showed that the encapsidated HBV DNA remained associated with the nuclear membrane. Trypsinization of intact nuclei resulted in disassociation of the nucleocapsid from the nuclear membranes, suggesting that the nuclear membrane presents a barrier to intact HBV virions or nucleocapsids. This may explain why HepG2 cells are refractile to infection although permissive for HBV replication after transfection of viral DNA.

Abstract
Treatment of ducks congenitally infected with the duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) using the guanosine analogue ganciclovir resulted in prompt and profound inhibition of viral DNA replication in serum and liver. By the end of the treatment period all the replicative intermediates, except the supercoiled DNA form, could not be detected. Within 2 weeks of cessation of treatment viral replication returned and, in some cases, rebound occurred. Sequential treatment with prednisolone followed by ganciclovir also resulted in inhibition of viral replication and, even though relapse was observed after therapy was discontinued, the rebound phenomenon was reduced. Ganciclovir significantly and selectively inhibited DHBV DNA replication but may be more efficacious if used in combination with compounds targeted to the viral supercoiled DNA form.

Abstract
Increasing evidence has suggested that the GABAergic neurotransmitter system is involved in the pathogenesis of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). We used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS) to investigate whether PMDD is associated with alterations in brain GABA levels. Levels of glutamate-glutamine (Glx) were also explored. Participants comprised 22 women with PMDD and 22 age-matched healthy controls who underwent 3T (1)H MRS during the late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. GABA+ and Glx levels were quantified in the anterior cingulate cortex/medial prefrontal cortex (ACC/mPFC) and the left basal ganglia (ltBG). Water-scaled GABA+ concentrations and GABA+/tCr ratios were significantly lower in both the ACC/mPFC and ltBG regions of PMDD women than in healthy controls. Glx/tCr ratios were significantly higher in the ACC/mPFC region of PMDD women than healthy controls. Our preliminary findings provide the first report of abnormal levels of GABA+ and Glx in mood-related brain regions of women with PMDD, indicating that dysregulation of the amino acid neurotransmitter system may be an important neurobiological mechanism in the pathogenesis of PMDD.

Abstract
Nine ducks congenitally infected with the duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) were treated either orally (four ducks for 10 weeks) or intraperitoneally (five ducks for 12 weeks) with the Indian traditional herbal remedy Phyllanthus amarus. Compared to placebo-treated control ducks, these treatments did not result in a reduction of circulating viral DNA in the serum or in the level of viral DNA replication in the liver. In two of the five intraperitoneal-treated ducks, a reduction in the levels of duck hepatitis B surface antigenaemia (DHBsAg) was observed. The data strongly suggest that Phyllanthus amarus has no significant inhibitory effect on DHBV DNA replication and only a minor effect on DHBsAg production.
