Abstract
Xenobiotic transport proteins are involved in cellular defence against accumulation of xenobiotics participating in multixenobiotic resistance (MXR). In order to study the transcriptional regulation of MXR genes in fish exposed to common chemical pollutants we selected the thicklip grey mullet (Chelon labrosus), since mugilids are widespread in highly degraded estuarine environments where they have to survive through development and adulthood. Partial sequences belonging to genes coding for members of 3 different families of ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporter proteins (ABCB1; ABCB11; ABCC2; ABCC3; ABCG2) and a vault protein (major vault protein, MVP) were amplified and sequenced from mullet liver. Their liver and brain transcription levels were examined in juvenile mullets under exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and to fresh (F) and weathered (WF) Prestige-like heavy fuel oil for 2 and 16 days. In liver, PFOS significantly up-regulated transcription of abcb1, abcb11 and abcg2 while in brain only abcb11 was up-regulated. Both fuel treatments significantly down-regulated abcb11 in liver at day 2 while abcc2 was only down-regulated by WF. mvp was significantly up-regulated by F and down-regulated by WF at day 2 in the liver. At day 16 only a significant up-regulation of abcb1 in the F group was recorded. Brain abcc3 and abcg2 were down-regulated by both fuels at day 2, while abcb1 and abcc2 were only down-regulated by F exposure. After 16 days of exposure only abcb11 and abcg2 were regulated. In conclusion, exposure to organic xenobiotics significantly alters transcription levels of genes participating in xenobiotic efflux, especially after short periods of exposure. Efflux transporter gene transcription profiling could thus constitute a promising tool to assess exposure to common pollutants.

Abstract
There is a need for sensitive biological effect methods by which to detect impacts of chronic exposure to low concentrations of contaminants. Two methods shown to be potentially useful for monitoring purposes in fish include lysosomal membrane stability and peroxisome proliferation. These biological endpoints were assessed in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) head kidney following exposure to a mixture of produced water components including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phenol, and alkylphenols. Lysosomal damage of head kidney cells occurred within the first two weeks and did not recover during the entire exposure period (32 weeks). Lysosomal membrane stability was not affected by gender and was responsive at low concentrations of contamination, indicating that lysosomal membrane stability measured in the head kidney could be a useful biomarker for effects of offshore pollution. Peroxisome proliferation, measured as acyl-CoA oxidase activity in the head kidney, appeared to be a potential biomarker in male cod exposed less than 16 weeks.

Abstract
Mussels (Mytilus edulis) were continuously exposed to dispersed crude oil (0.015-0.25mg/l) for 7 months covering the whole gamete development cycle. After 1 month exposure to 0.25 mg oil/l, the level of alkali-labile phosphates (ALP) and the volume density of atretic oocytes in female gonads were higher than those in the gonads of control females, indicating that oil affected the level of vitellogenin-like proteins and gamete development. Spawning of mussels was induced after 7 months oil exposure. Parental oil exposure did not affect subsequent fertilization success in clean seawater but this was reduced in 0.25 mg oil/l. Parental exposure to 0.25 mg oil/l caused both slow development and a higher percentage of abnormalities in D-shell larvae 2 days post-fertilization; reduced growth 7 days post-fertilization. These effects were greatly enhanced when larval stages were maintained at 0.25 mg oil/l. Similar studies are warranted for risk assessment prognosis.

Abstract
In order to assess the long-term lysosomal responses to the Prestige oil spill (POS), mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, were collected in 22 localities from Galicia and the Bay of Biscay (North Iberian peninsula) in July, and September 2003, April, July, and October 2004-2005 and April 2006. Lysosomal membrane stability (labilisation period, LP) and lysosomal structural changes (lysosomal volume density, Vv(L) and lysosomal surface-to-volume ratio, S/V(L)) were measured as general stress biomarkers. The most remarkable long-term effects after the POS were drastic changes in lysosomal size (lysosomal enlargement) and membrane stability (extremely low LP values) up to April-04. Later on, a recovery trend was envisaged all along the studied area after July-04, albeit membrane stability continued to be below 20 min throughout the studied period up to April-06, which indicates a "distress-to-moderate-stress" condition. Lysosomal Response Index (LRI) revealed that environmental stress was more marked in Galicia than in the Bay of Biscay, mainly in the first sampling year, although a "moderate-to-high-stress" condition persisted until July-05. Overall, although lysosomal size returned to reference values, membrane stability was not fully recovered indicating a stress situation throughout the studied period.

Abstract
In order to assess the biological effects of the Prestige oil spill (POS), mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, were collected in 22 localities along the North coast of the Iberian Peninsula over 3 years (April 2003-April 2006). Different tissue-level biomarkers including cell type composition (volume density of basophilic cells, Vv(BAS)) in digestive gland epithelium, structural changes of digestive alveoli (mean luminal radius to mean epithelial thickness, MLR/MET) and histopathological alterations (prevalence and intensity) of the digestive gland were analysed. Severe alterations in the general condition of the digestive gland tissue were observed all over the study area up to 2004-2005. High Vv(BAS) values were recorded mainly in Galicia but also to a lesser extent in the Bay of Biscay in 2003-2004. Atrophy of the digestive alveoli, measured in terms of MLR/MET, was detected all along the studied area up to 2006. Inflammatory responses cannot be related to pollution due to the POS: (a) prevalence and intensity of focal hemocytic infiltration were higher in the Bay of Biscay than in Galicia but they did not show a clear temporal trend; (b) high intensities of brown cell aggregates were only sporadically recorded; and (c) granulocytomas were more frequently recorded in the Bay of Biscay than in Galicia and especially in localities (i.e. Arrigunaga) subjected to chronic pollution. Likewise, Marteilia, trematodes, intracellular ciliates, unidentified eosinophilic bodies, R/CLO and Mytilicola did not follow any recognisable pattern that could be associated to the POS. In contrast, high Nematopsis intensities recorded in several localities in 2003 might suggest some response of local interest after the POS (i.e., in combination with particular factors/conditions). More data at a regional scale are needed before histopathology may provide a reliable ecosystem health assessment but the present results suggest that the approach is worthwhile. Overall, although Vv(BAS) returned to reference values by 2004-2005, MLR/MET values indicated that the mussel health condition was affected during the whole study period up to April 2006.

Abstract
The Urdaibai estuary is a UNESCO biosphere reserve impacted by recreational, agricultural and industrial activities. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are major pollutants in Urdaibai, and their control and the identification of their sources is central on the preservation of the area. Chemical analysis by GC-MS showed a significant pollution by PAHs in Urdaibai sediment samples, mainly from pyrolytic sources, with minor contributions from oil spills. Measurement of the dioxin-like activity using a yeast-based bioassay showed an excess of biological activity in sediment samples from the inner part of the estuary. Analysis of PAH metabolites in bile of thicklip grey mullet (Chelon labrosus) showed a large excess of 2-naphthol over 1-naphthol or 1-pyrenol, suggesting a specific contamination in the inner Urdaibai estuary by some industrial process. Therefore, the combination of these three techniques defined different PAH pollution sources in Urdaibai: a major pyrolytic origin, occasional oil spills, and specific industrial activities.

Abstract
Mussels are used as bioindicators of chemical pollution in coastal and estuarine waters. We measured the concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), phthalate esters (PEs), butyltins, and metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, and Zn) in mussel tissues collected from the lower Bilbao estuary (Arriluze, north of Spain) every 2 months from November 2002 to March 2004. The concentration (microg g(-1) dry weight) of PAHs, PCBs, and PEs ranged from 5.1 to 18.3, from 0.04 to 0.2, and from 1.5 to 27.6, respectively. Temporal pattern variations, including maximum and minimum values, were determined for metals and BTs from their concentration profiles during a period of 1 year. The main feature of organic microcontaminants was relatively high concentration values, reflecting the overall industrial and harbour activities of the site. Moreover, the ratios of methylated species and certain other diagnostic ratios suggested a petrogenic origin for PAHs. Finally, the relations among the concentrations found in mussel tissues and the levels of several cell biomarkers were established by a partial least squares model.

Abstract
Urdaibai is a Biosphere's Reserve, containing rich bivalve populations. In the present work we aimed to characterize the reproductive cycle and to study possible disturbances in reproduction in mussel populations from Urdaibai. During an annual gametogenic cycle (January 2003-March 2004) samples of gonads were collected bimonthly and gamete development (gonad index), histopathology of mantle tissue and vitellogenin-like protein levels by alkali labile phosphate (ALP) method were measured. No significant changes were detected in ALP levels out of those related to gametogenic development in females. However, severe oocyte atresia was observed in female mussels in January and March 2003. Male mussels showed low ALP values with the exception of high ALP levels in March 2003. High prevalence of hermaphrodite/intersex mussels (26%) was detected in March 2004. Hermaphrodites/intersex and oocyte atresia were not found in mussels from the nearby Abra estuary. In conclusion, these results suggest that mussels inhabiting the Urdaibai estuary could be exposed to toxic chemicals such as endocrine disruptors.

Abstract
Thicklip grey mullets Chelon labrosus inhabit coastal and estuarine areas where they can be chronically exposed to commonly released pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and perfluorinated compounds. These pollutants can also originate from accidental spills, such as the Prestige oil spill in 2002, which resulted in the release of a heavy fuel oil that affected coastal ecosystems in the Bay of Biscay. Peroxisome proliferation (PP), induced biotransformation metabolism, immunosuppression and endocrine disruption are some of the possible biological effects caused by such chemicals. With the aim of studying the effects of organic toxic chemicals on such biological processes at the transcriptional and at the cell/tissue level, juvenile mullets were exposed to the typical mammalian peroxisome proliferator perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), and to fresh (F) and weathered (WF) Prestige-like heavy fuel oil for 2 and 16 days. First, fragments of genes relevant to biotransformation, immune/inflammatory and endocrine disruption processes were cloned using degenerate primers. Fuel oil elicited a significant PP response as proved by the transcriptional upregulation of palmitoyl-CoA oxidase (aox1), peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha (pparalpha) and retinoic X receptor, by the AOX1 activity induction and by the increased peroxisomal volume density. PFOS only elicited a significant induction of AOX1 activity at day 2 and of PPARalpha mRNA expression at day 16. All treatments significantly increased catalase mRNA expression at day 16 in liver and at day 2 in gill. Cyp1a transcription (liver and gill) and EROD activity were induced in fuel oil treated organisms. In the case of phase II metabolism only hepatic glutathione S-transferase mRNA was overexpressed in mullets exposed to WF for 16 days. Functionally, this response was reflected in a significant accumulation of bile PAH metabolites. WF treated fish accumulated mainly high molecular weight metabolites while F exposure resulted in accumulation of mainly low molecular ones. Fuel oil significantly regulated immune response related complement component C3 and hepcidin transcription followed by a significant regulation of inflammatory response related apolipoprotein-A1 and fatty acid binding protein mRNAs at day 16. These responses were accompanied by a significant hepatic inflammatory response with lymphocyte accumulations (IRLA) and accumulation of melanomacrophage centers (MMC). PFOS did not elicit any transcriptional response in the studied biotransformation and immune related genes, although histologically significant effects were recorded in IRLA and MMC. A significant reduction of lysosomal membrane stability was observed in all exposed animals. No endocrine disruption effects were observed in liver while brain aromatase mRNA was overexpressed after all treatments at day 2 and estrogen receptor alpha was downregulated under WF exposure at day 16. These results show new molecular and cellular biomarkers of exposure to organic chemicals and demonstrate that in mullets PP could be regulated through molecular mechanisms similar to those in rodents, although the typical mammalian peroxisome proliferator PFOS and heavy fuel oil follow divergent mechanisms of action.

Abstract
Peroxisomal proteomics was applied to assess possible biological effects after the Prestige's oil spill. Mussels were sampled in July 2004 and 2005 in four stations in the NW (closest to the spill) and NE coasts of the Iberian Peninsula. Principal components analysis (PCA) suggested differences in protein expression among stations and sampling years. Several proteins were putatively identified by mass spectrometry and immunolocalization. PC1 separated the NW stations in 2004 from the rest of the stations and sampling years mainly due to up-regulation of peroxisomal beta-oxidation proteins and PMP70. PC3 separated the NE stations, based on up-regulation of the antioxidant enzyme catalase in 2004 compared to 2005. PC4 separated the stations in the NE and the NW. This work shows that environmental proteomics, together with multivariate data analysis, could provide information to interpret the effects of oil spills at cellular level in mussels.

Abstract
Urdaibai was declared a Biosphere's Reserve by UNESCO in 1984. Because we observed a high prevalence of hermaphroditism in mussels sampled in Urdaibai in March 2004, we started the present research work in order to determine the presence of endocrine disruptors (EDs) in sediments and to study possible EDs effects on mussels and oysters using gonad index and vitellogenin (VTG)-like protein levels as biomarkers. Samples were collected at five localities in April 2007 and 2008, and in October 2007. Estrogenic hormones were not detected in sediments and levels of bisphenol A and organotin compounds were very low. Alkylphenols were found at moderate levels and showed a time-dependent decrease. Phthalates were found at levels up to 8000 ng/g. High prevalence of oocyte atresia and necrosis occurred in mussels sampled in April. Retarded gametogenesis was observed in an oyster population from a shipyard. Hermaphrodites or alterations in VTG-like protein levels were not found but the high prevalence of histopathological alterations in oocytes is of concern.

Abstract
Aquatic organisms are exposed to diverse xenobiotics that cause peroxisome proliferation and/or endocrine disruption, both modulated in vertebrates by transcription factors of the nuclear receptor (NR) superfamily. Peroxisome proliferators are agonists of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) that heterodimerize with the retinoid X receptor (RXR). Many xenoestrogens activate the estrogen receptor (ER). Here, 1090 bp of PPARalpha, 1255 bp of PPARgamma, 278 bp of RXRalpha, and 578 bp of ERalpha of thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus were cloned. Sequences were highly conserved, although relevant changes with respect to mammalian homologs were identified in PPARgamma and ERalpha. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR was used to determine if these NRs were expressed in different tissues of male, female and undifferentiated mullets captured in January and June. Expression of PPARs was highest in liver and lowest in muscle. RXRalpha expression was homogeneous excepting a low expression in male and female gill in January and brain and heart of undifferentiated fish in January and June. ERalpha expression predominated in liver and female gonad in June. The expression level of PPARs and ERalpha was significantly higher in liver in January than in gills in January or June. The present results show tissue-dependent modulation of expression of NRs in mullets.

Abstract
Bivalve molluscs, as filter-feeding organisms, are known to accumulate metals that can produce deleterious effects on organisms. The phagocytic activity of haemocytes and lysosomal alterations in the digestive gland cells were measured in the freshwater Asian clam exposed to cadmium, in order to assess the possible use of immunocompetence and lysosomal responses as biomarkers of freshwater quality. Clams were exposed in the laboratory to nominal concentrations of 3, 10, 21.4, 46.5 and 100 microg 1(-1) of cadmium and sampled after 7, 15 and 30 days of exposure. The results show a decrease of phagocytic activity after only 7 days of exposure to 10 microg 1(-1) of cadmium. This response was also observed as the exposure time was increased. Lysosomes in the digestive cells increased in size and number after 7 days of exposure as cadmium concentration increased. After 30 days of exposure, a decrease in size and number indicated a change in the response to the metal from concentrations of 46.5 microg 1(-1) of cadmium. A dose and time response both in phagocytic activity of haemocytes and lysosomal structure demonstrated a possible use of these biomarkers in freshwater biomonitoring.

Abstract
Metallothionein (MT) induction is widely used as a biomarker of exposure to metals in mussels. The aims of the present work were first to compare the suitability of spectrophotometry and differential pulse polarography (DPP) for MT detection in mussels exposed to 200 ppb cadmium for 9 days in a laboratory experiment and in mussels sampled in different seasons from expected pollution gradients along the Mediterranean Sea; second, to intercalibrate the widely used spectrophotometric method using mussels from Saronikos Gulf. In the intercalibration of the spectrophotometric method, similar results (p>0.05) were obtained by two different research teams indicating a good reproducibility of the technique. However, polarographic and spectrophotometric methods gave significantly (p<0.05) different results in laboratory and field studies. In the laboratory experiment, MT values detected with DPP were nine times higher than with spectrophotometry. The results obtained by the two methods were significantly correlated. Both methods could discriminate between control and exposed mussels. In field studies, MT values obtained by DPP were 34-38-fold higher than with spectrophotometry, and MT concentrations measured by both methods were not correlated. This discrepancy could be due to several factors, including the low levels of bioavailable metals in the studied areas and the possibility that the different methods can measure MT isoforms differentially. Further work is needed to decipher the functions of MT isoforms in mussels. This information is relevant for the application of MT as a biomarker in biomonitoring programmes.

Abstract
Cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A), benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) activation and biliary elimination, phase II activities, and peroxisomal and antioxidant activities of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) were studied in a long-term controlled experiment. Fish were serially exposed in water on day 1 and on completion of months 3, 6 and 9 to 0.1, 0.2, 0.1 and 0.1mg B(a)P/l, respectively, while another group was identically treated with additional PCB77 (3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl) at 1% of concomitant B(a)P (w/w). Temporally persistent responses were obtained by sampling on week 3 and 3 months from each latest exposure. Serial exposure to B(a)P+PCB77 progressively induced liver 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity and CYP1A protein levels (ELISA, western blotting) towards months 9, 12 and gill EROD activity on month 12. It associated with an apparent increase in liver benzo(a)pyrene diol epoxide (BPDE)-DNA adduct levels (ultrasensitive enzyme radioimmunoassay), and elevated bile B(a)P metabolite levels on month 9 females as compared to males. In contrast, B(a)P alone did not cause (p>0.05) comparable effects on liver EROD, CYP1A, adducts nor on bile metabolites. Both exposed groups demonstrated evidence for lasting oxidative stress as hepatic superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were significantly altered (p<0.05) with symptomatic pro-oxidant associations among them. Both treatments affected liver somatic index similarly (increase on month 3, decrease on month 9 in males). Continued exposure on month 18 (0.2mg B(a)P/l, 1% PCB77) followed by sampling 6 months later showed sustained induction (p<0.001) of hepatic EROD in B(a)P+PCB77 group, which was not seen in B(a)P alone treatment. Thus, PCB77 co-exposure prolonged CYP1A induction and contributed to a persistent oxidative challenge in B(a)P-exposed turbot. The results indicate synergistic effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) exposure in the aquatic environment.

Abstract
A biomonitoring program was carried out in spring and autumn in three pollution hot-spots and sensitive areas of the NW Mediterranean Sea using red mullets (Mullus barbatus) as sentinel organisms and a battery of biomarkers together with gonad histology. In fish from anthropogenic impacted areas (Fos-sur-mer, Cortiou, Arenzano, Delta of Ebro) lysosomal membrane destabilization occurred indicating disturbed health. There were no significant differences in metallothionein (MT) levels among stations. Peroxisomal acyl-CoA oxidase (AOX) activity was highest in fish from Cortiou. Both MT levels and AOX activities were significantly correlated with gamete development. Prevalence of melanomacrophage centers were high in Cortiou in all samplings and in Fos-sur-mer in September samplings. In conclusion, the application of a battery of biomarkers in red mullets provided relevant data for the assessment of environmental pollution in the NW Mediterranean Sea but also showed the difficulties of using native fish as sentinels. For future studies caging strategies are recommended.

Abstract
With the aim of assessing the biological effects of pollution along three gradients of pollution in the NW Mediterranean Sea, a biomonitoring survey was implemented using a battery of biomarkers (lysosomal membrane stability, lysosomal structural changes, metallothionein (MT) induction and peroxisome proliferation) in mussels over a period of two years as part of the EU-funded BEEP project. Mussels from the most impacted zones (Fos, Genova and Barcelona harbours) showed enlarged lysosomes accompanied by reduced labilisation period of lysosomal membranes, indicating disturbed health. MT levels did not reveal significant differences between stations and were significantly correlated with gonad index, suggesting that they were influenced by gamete development. Peroxisomal acyl-CoA oxidase (AOX) activity was significantly inhibited in polluted stations possibly due to interactions among mixtures of pollutants. In conclusion, the application of a battery of effect and exposure biomarkers provided relevant data for the assessment of biological effects of environmental pollution along the NW Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract
Metallothioneins (MTs) are metal-inducible proteins that can be used as biomarkers of metal exposure. In mussels two families of MT isoforms (MT10 and MT20) have been characterized. In this study, mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were exposed to 200 ppb Cd and 40 ppb Cu for 2 and 9 days to characterize the tissue and isoform specificity of metal-induced MT expression. Non-radioactive in situ hybridization demonstrated that both MT isoforms were mainly transcribed in digestive tubule epithelial cells, especially in basophilic cells. Weaker MT expression was detected in non-ciliated duct cells, stomach and gill epithelial cells, haemocytes, adipogranular cells, spermatic follicles and oocytes. RT-PCR resulted in cloning of a novel M. galloprovincialis isoform homologous to recently cloned Mytilus edulis intron-less MT10B isoform. In gills, Cd only affected MT10 gene expression after 2 days of exposure while increases in MT protein levels occurred at day 9. In the digestive gland, a marked increase of both isoforms, but especially of MT20, was accompanied by increased levels of MT proteins and basophilic cell volume density (Vv(BAS)) after 2 and 9 days and of intralysosomal metal accumulation in digestive cells after 9 days. Conversely, although metal was accumulated in digestive cells lysosomes and the Vv(BAS) increased in Cu-exposed mussels, Cu exposure did not produce an increase of MT gene expression or MT protein levels. These data suggest that MTs are expressed in a tissue-, cell- and isoform-specific way in response to different metals.

Abstract
Aquatic organisms living in coastal and estuarine areas are exposed to diverse contaminants which can cause peroxisome proliferation. Peroxisome proliferators are agonists of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), members of the nuclear receptor superfamily. We have recently demonstrated expression of the three PPAR isoforms in liver of mullet Chelon labrosus and other fish species by immunohistochemistry. The goal of the present study was first to clone PPARalpha and second to investigate its expression pattern in various tissues of mullet. PCR-based screening of mullet cDNA with PPARalpha specific degenerate primers resulted in amplification, subcloning and sequencing of a 1090 bp cDNA fragment (AY618315) that encodes mullet PPARalpha and exhibits highest amino acid identity to fish Sparus aurata PPARalpha (90%). Semi-quantitative RT-PCR was used to characterize the expression of PPARalpha in brain, muscle, liver, spleen, gill, heart and female gonad of juvenile and adult male and female mullet. For this, mullet 18S-rRNA (AY825252), beta-actin (AY836368) and elongation factor alpha (AY836369) were cloned and used as internal reference for RT-PCR. Expression of PPARalpha was detected in all tissues, was highest in liver and lowest in adult male and female muscle.

Abstract
To assess the biological effects of the Prestige oil spill (November 2002) on coastal ecosystems, mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were sampled in 22 locations along the coast of Galicia and the Bay of Biscay in April, July and September 2003 and in February, April, July and October 2004. Several cell and tissue-level biomarkers were measured in digestive gland. Flesh condition index and gamete development stages were assessed as supporting parameters. AOX activity, a marker of exposure to peroxisome proliferating compounds including PAHs, was particularly low in Galicia in 2003 and further was markedly increased in several localities in 2004. Values of the labilization period (LP) of the lysosomal membrane were low in all the studied localities, especially in Galicia in 2003. In 2004, LP values raised, evidencing a certain recovery in mussel's health. In agreement, the volume density of basophilic cells was markedly high in 2003 and showed a decreasing trend throughout 2004. Parameters defining the structure of digestive alveoli showed few variations between 2003 and 2004. Significant correlations between several biomarkers and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were found. In conclusion, employed biomarkers detected highest degree of disturbance in areas most impacted by the oil spill (Galicia) and were able to evidence a recovery trend during 2004, related to a decrease in total PAH concentrations in mussels.
