Abstract
Insect growth regulators (IGRs) disrupt the normal activity of the endocrine or hormone system of insects, affecting the development, reproduction, or metamorphosis of the target insects, and normally causing less detrimental effects to beneficial insects. The effects of three IGRs (pyriproxyfen, fenoxycarb, and buprofezin) on Encarsia formosa Gahan, an endoparasitoid of whiteflies, were determined using B. tabaci as a host. We assessed the effects of the IGRs on parasitoid's larval development, pupation, emergence, and contact effects of the dry residues on plant leaf and glass vial surface on adult mortality and parasitism. When the three IGRs were applied at larval stage, no or few larvae pupated in the pyriproxyfen treatments and the highest concentration of fenoxycarb, and a majority of larvae pupated in the buprofezin treatments; of those pupated, 62.3-88.1% became adults. When the IGRs were applied at the pupal stage, 2.3-17.5% developed to adults in the pyriproxyfen treatments, 59.7-89.0% in the fenoxycarb treatments, and 58.4-83.6% in the buprofezin treatments. The leaf residues of the IGRs had no appreciable effects on adults, whereas the residues on glass vial caused significantly lower adult survival than on plant leaves. The residues of pyriproxyfen and fenoxycarb slightly reduced parasitism as compared with buprofezin and controls. However, the rates of parasitoids that became adults were significantly lower, especially in the pyriproxyfen treatments. According to the standards of International Organization of Biological Control (IOBC), pyriproxyfen was harmful, while fenoxycarb and buprofezin were slightly or moderately harmful to larvae and harmless to E. formosa pupae.

Abstract
A precision measurement by AMS of the antiproton flux and the antiproton-to-proton flux ratio in primary cosmic rays in the absolute rigidity range from 1 to 450 GV is presented based on 3.49×10^{5} antiproton events and 2.42×10^{9} proton events. The fluxes and flux ratios of charged elementary particles in cosmic rays are also presented. In the absolute rigidity range ∼60 to ∼500 GV, the antiproton p[over ¯], proton p, and positron e^{+} fluxes are found to have nearly identical rigidity dependence and the electron e^{-} flux exhibits a different rigidity dependence. Below 60 GV, the (p[over ¯]/p), (p[over ¯]/e^{+}), and (p/e^{+}) flux ratios each reaches a maximum. From ∼60 to ∼500 GV, the (p[over ¯]/p), (p[over ¯]/e^{+}), and (p/e^{+}) flux ratios show no rigidity dependence. These are new observations of the properties of elementary particles in the cosmos.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is complicated and challenging because of the frequent presence of cirrhosis. Therefore, we propose a novel surgical approach to minimize the invasiveness and risk in patients with HCC, hypersplenism, and esophagogastric varices. METHODS This was a retrospective study carried out in 25 patients with HCC and hypersplenism and who underwent simultaneous laparoscopic-guided radio-frequency ablation and laparoscopic splenectomy with endoscopic variceal ligation. Tumor size was restricted to a single nodule of <3 cm. Characteristics of the patients (cirrhosis etiology, liver function, tumor size, spleen size), surgery (complications, blood loss, time of stay), and follow-up (recurrence and survival) were examined. RESULTS Mean operative time was 128 ± 18 min. Mean blood loss was 206 ± 57 mL. Length of stay was 7.0 ± 1.5 days. Mean total costs were 8064 USD. Cytopenia and thrombocytopenia recovered quickly after surgery. No procedure was converted to open surgery. Two patients showed worsening liver function after surgery, three patients showed worsening of ascites, and five patients suffered from portal vein thrombosis. The 1-year tumor-free survival was 78.8 %, and the 21-month tumor-free survival was 61.4 %. According to a literature review, these outcomes were comparable to those of simultaneous open hepatic resection and splenectomy. CONCLUSIONS Laparoscopic-guided radio-frequency ablation with laparoscopic splenectomy and endoscopic variceal ligation could be an available technique for patients with HCC <3 cm, hypersplenism, and esophagogastric varices. This approach may help to minimize the surgical risks and results in a fast increase in platelet counts with an acceptable rate of complications.

Abstract
Background Several staging systems have been developed to evaluate patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), including the China Staging System (CS), the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system, and seventh edition; the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system, and Cancer of the Liver Italian Program (CLIP) staging system. The optimal staging system for to evaluate patients in China with HCC has not been determined. This study was designed to determine the optimal staging system for predicting patient prognosis by comparing the performances of these four staging systems in a cohort of Chinese patients with HCC. Methods This study enrolled 307 consecutive Chinese patients with HCC in Shandong Province. The performances of the CS, TNM, BCLC, and CLIP staging systems were compared and ranked using a concordance index. Predictors of survival were identified using univariate and multivariate Cox model analyses. Results The mean overall survival of the patient cohort was 12.08 ± 11.87 months. Independent predictors of survival included tumor size, number of lesions, tumor thromboses, cirrhosis, serum albumin level and serum total bilirubin level. Compared with the other three staging systems, the CS staging system showed optimal performance as an independent predictor of patient survival. The BCLC staging system showed the poorest performance; its treatment algorithm was not suitable for patients in this study. Conclusions CS was the most suitable staging system for predicting survival of patients with HCC in China. Abstract
BACKGROUND To observe the anti-tumor effects and possible mechanism of C21 steroidal glycoside (17-β-Marsdenia tenacissima glycoside B (17-β-tenacigenin B)) and Xiaoaiping injection in the adenoid cystic carcinoma cell line SACC83. METHODS We used the salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma cell line SACC83 for the study and used MTT, flow cytometry, and Western-blot (WB) to study the anti-tumor efficacy and mechanism of 17-β-tenacigenin B and Xiaoaiping injection. Three groups were divided as follows: group 1: control group (without drug treatment), group 2: SACC83 treated with 17-β-Marsdenia tenacissima glycoside B, group 3: SACC83 treated with Xiaoaiping injec- tion. RESULTS The 17-β-tenacigenin B had no significant anti-tumor effect while the Xiaoaiping injection had a dosage-dependent growth inhibition effect on the adenoid cystic carcinoma cell line SACC83. According to WB, after the administration of the 17-p-tenacigenin B, the expression of apoptosis-related protein was not very significant; however, after the administration of the Xiaoaiping injection, the expression of apoptosis inhibition protein bcl-2 decreased while the expression of apoptosis promotion protein bax increased. CONCLUSIONS The 17-β-tenacigenin B had no obvious anti-tumor effects while the Xiaoaiping injection had good anti-tumor effects. Even though the 17-β-tenacigenin B is an important component of the Xiaoaiping injection, in the in vitro experiment, compared with the Xiaoaiping injection, the 17-β-tenacigenin B showed no good anti-tumor effects. However, we need further studies on in vivo experiments of 17-β-tenacigenin B and the anti-tumor effect of other C21 steroidal glycoside monomers in the Xiaoaiping injection.

Abstract
The objective of this paper was to identify hub genes and pathways associated with retinoblastoma using centrality analysis of the co-expression network and pathway-enrichment analysis. The co-expression network of retinoblastoma was constructed by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) based on differentially expressed (DE) genes, and clusters were obtained through the molecular complex detection (MCODE) algorithm. Degree centrality analysis of the co-expression network was performed to explore hub genes present in retinoblastoma. Pathway-enrichment analysis was performed using the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. Validation of hub gene expression in retinoblastoma was performed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis. The co-expression network based on 221 DE genes between retinoblastoma and normal controls consisted of 210 nodes and 3965 edges, and 5 clusters of the network were evaluated. By assessing the centrality analysis of the co-expression network, 21 hub genes were identified, such as SNORD115-41, RASSF2, and SNORD115-44. According to RT-PCR analysis, 16 of the 21 hub genes were differently expressed, including RASSF2 and CDCA7, and 5 were not differently expressed in retinoblastoma compared to normal controls. Pathway analysis showed that genes in 2 clusters were enriched in 3 pathways: purine metabolism, p53 signaling pathway, and melanogenesis. In this study, we successfully identified 16 hub genes and 3 pathways associated with retinoblastoma, which may be potential biomarkers for early detection and therapy for retinoblastoma.

Abstract
Knowledge of the precise rigidity dependence of the helium flux is important in understanding the origin, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays. A precise measurement of the helium flux in primary cosmic rays with rigidity (momentum/charge) from 1.9 GV to 3 TV based on 50 million events is presented and compared to the proton flux. The detailed variation with rigidity of the helium flux spectral index is presented for the first time. The spectral index progressively hardens at rigidities larger than 100 GV. The rigidity dependence of the helium flux spectral index is similar to that of the proton spectral index though the magnitudes are different. Remarkably, the spectral index of the proton to helium flux ratio increases with rigidity up to 45 GV and then becomes constant; the flux ratio above 45 GV is well described by a single power law.

Abstract
AIMS ASCL2, a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor, is putatively involved in tumour progression. This study aimed to evaluate ASCL2 expression level in non-small-cell carcinoma (NSCLC) and assess its prognostic value for patients. METHODS ASCL2 protein expression was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC cohort) in 79 cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and 67 cases of adenocarcinoma (AC). Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox regression analysis were performed to evaluate the prognostic significance of ASCL2. The same analyses were conducted in a cohort (n=790) from The Cancer Genome Atlas database (TCGA) to validate the expression pattern and prognostic value of ASCL2. RESULTS ASCL2 expression levels were significantly increased in SCC compared with normal lung tissue (p<0.001) and AC (p=0.008). High ASCL2 expression was associated with advanced tumour-node-metastasis (TNM) stage (p=0.023) and worse differentiation status (p=0.001) in SCC, but a positive correlation between ASCL2 expression level and advanced TNM stage (p=0.016) was observed in AC. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that ASCL2 was prognostic in SCC (p=0.004) but not in AC (p=0.183). Multivariable Cox regression analysis indicated that elevated expression of ASCL2 was an independent prognostic factor (HR 2.764; p=0.030) in SCC patients. The expression pattern and prognostic significance of ASCL2 in SCC and AC were validated using the TCGA cohort. CONCLUSIONS Elevated expression of ASCL2 may identify an aggressive subgroup in SCC and serve as an independent prognostic indicator in these patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the treatment effect of laparoscopic hepatectomy and microwave ablation for colorectal liver metastases. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 126 patients who received treatment for colorectal liver metastases in our hospital during Jan. 2009 to Jan. 2015, and these patients were divided into laparoscopic surgical group (40 cases), microwave group (42 cases) and open surgical group (44 cases). The overall survival rate and disease-free survival rate were compared by using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS The operation time in three groups were (120±35), (55±20), (100±30) min, respectively. The blood loss in the three groups were (300±120), (100±25), (250±95) ml, respectively. The operation time, blood loss and hospital stay in microwave group were less than the other two groups (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in survival time and postoperative complications in these groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Laparoscopic hepatectomy and microwave ablation in the treatment of colorectal liver metastases is effective compared to open hepatectomy. So the minimal invasive surgical techniques had benefit for patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE To introduce a convenient, quick and effective way to place self-expandable metal stents (SEMSs) to relieve dysphagia and fistula caused by esophageal carcinoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS A consecutive series of 36 patients (25 men, 11 women), aged 38-82 years (median, 52.7 years) underwent stent placement using a 7F long sheath of 55 cm and fully covered SEMS under local anesthesia with fluoroscopic control. RESULTS Stent placement was successful in all patients. Swallowing improved from mean dysphagia score 3.44 ± 0.50 to score 0.69 ± 0.71 (P = 0.000). There were no clinically significant complications during and after the deployment of stents. Migration was noted in 4 patients. Restenting was needed in 3 patients. Removal was needed in 2 patients. Mean survival following stenting was 134.14 d. CONCLUSIONS SEMSs provide rapid, safe and effective relief of dysphagia and fistula. Using the 7F long sheath of 55 cm could make the procedure easy, quick and safe.

Abstract
Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. tritici, is one of the most destructive diseases of wheat in the world. The Sichuan Basin is one of the most important regions of wheat production and stripe rust epidemics in China. Stripe rust resistance gene Yr26 (the same gene as Yr24) has been widely used in wheat breeding programs and in many cultivars grown in this region since the gene was discovered in the early 1990s. Virulence to Yr26 has increased in frequency since its first detection in 2008. The objective of this study was to assess the vulnerability of the wheat cultivars and breeding lines in the Sichuan Basin to Yr26-virulent races. In total, 85 wheat accessions were tested with Yr26-avirulent races CYR32, CYR33, and Su11-4 and two Yr26-virulent races, V26/CM42 and V26/Gui22. DNA markers for Yr26 were used to determine the presence and absence of Yr26 in the wheat accessions. Of the 85 wheat accessions, only 5 were resistant and 19 susceptible to all races tested, and the remaining 61 were resistant to at least one or more races tested in seedling stage. In all, 65 (76.5%) accessions were susceptible to the emerging Yr26-virulent race V26/Gui22. In field tests, susceptible accessions increased from 31.8% in a nursery inoculated with predominant and Yr26-avirulent races to 61.2% in the nursery inoculated with the predominant races mixed with V26/Gui22. Based on the results of the molecular marker and race tests, 33 (38.8%) accessions were determined to have Yr26, showing that the Yr26 virulence is a major threat to wheat production in the Sichuan Basin and potentially in other regions of China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the risk factors of portal hypertensive gastropathy (PHG) in patients with hepatitis B associated cirrhosis and establish a Logistic regression model of noninvasive prediction. METHODS The clinical data of 234 hospitalized patients with hepatitis B associated cirrhosis from March 2012 to March 2014 were analyzed retrospectively. The dependent variable was the occurrence of PHG while the independent variables were screened by binary Logistic analysis. Multivariate Logistic regression was used for further analysis of significant noninvasive independent variables. Logistic regression model was established and odds ratio was calculated for each factor. The accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of model were evaluated by the curve of receiver operating characteristic (ROC). RESULTS According to univariate Logistic regression, the risk factors included hepatic dysfunction, albumin (ALB), bilirubin (TB), prothrombin time (PT), platelet (PLT), white blood cell (WBC), portal vein diameter, spleen index, splenic vein diameter, diameter ratio, PLT to spleen volume ratio, esophageal varices (EV) and gastric varices (GV). Multivariate analysis showed that hepatic dysfunction (X1), TB (X2), PLT (X3) and splenic vein diameter (X4) were the major occurring factors for PHG. The established regression model was Logit P=-2.667+2.186X1-2.167X2+0.725X3+0.976X4. The accuracy of model for PHG was 79.1% with a sensitivity of 77.2% and a specificity of 80.8%. CONCLUSION Hepatic dysfunction, TB, PLT and splenic vein diameter are risk factors for PHG and the noninvasive predicted Logistic regression model was Logit P=-2.667+2.186X1-2.167X2+0.725X3+0.976X4.

BACKGROUND H2AX, one of the variants of histone H2A with conserved sequence, plays a vital role in maintaining genomic stability. DNA double-strand break (DSB) induces H2AX phosphorylation (γH2AX). Growing evidence indicated γH2AX was linked to thyroid disease. However, the precise expression of γH2AX in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and nodular goiter was unknown. In this study, the yH2AX expression in PTC and nodular goiter and the significance of the aberrant expression were investigated. METHODS The γH2AX expression level was evaluated by immunohistochemistry staining in 140 specimens with thyroid diseases (30 cases of nodular goiter, 30 cases of PTC, and 80 cases of PTC coexisting with nodular goiter). The possible relationships between γH2AX expression and patients' clinicopathological characteristics were analyzed. RESULTS In the set of nodular goiter, 20.0% (6/30) of nodular goiter component and 10.0% (3/30) of normal adjacent tissues exhibited high expression of γH2AX (p > 0.05). In the set of PTC, 70.0% (21/30) of PTC component and 0.0% (0/30) of normal adjacent tissues showed high expression of γH2AX (p < 0.05). In the set of PTC coexisting with nodular goiter, 95.0% (76/80) of PTC component, 12.5% (10/80) of nodular goiter component, and 8.8% (7/80) of normal adjacent specimens showed high expression of γH2AX (p < 0.05). 85.5% (65/76) of PTC patients with lymph node metastasis were found to have a high expression level of γH2AX, and the proportion was lower than that in patients without lymph node metastasis (34/34, 100.0%) (p = 0.003). High γH2AX expression was also found in 76.2% (16/21) of stage IV patients and the proportion was lower than that in stage I - III patients (83/89, 93.3%) (p = 0.034). No statistically significant correlation was found between yH2AX expression level and other clinicopathological features, including age, gender, capsular invasion, tumor size, tumor focus number, distant metastasis, and T status. CONCLUSIONS γH2AX expression was increased in PTC patients, while nodular goiter and normal adjacent tissues exhibited no statistically significant difference in γH2AX expression. yH2AX expression had a negative correlation with TNM stage and lymph node metastasis. γH2AX seems to play a more critical role in early-stage PTC rather than late-stage PTC and might inhibit lymph node metastasis.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer is one of the commonest head and neck cancer. According to the recent research, VI lymph nodes (also called the front area, including thyrocricoid lymph nodes, tracheal surrounding lymph nodes, thyroid surrounding lymph node, recurrent laryngeal nerve lymph nodes, retropharyngeal lymph nodes) is the most common site of involvement in the differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Thyrocricoid lymph nodes known as the Delphian lymph node(DLN) is located between the thyroid cartilage and the cricoid cartilage. The DLN is one of the most accurate predictor. This paper reviewed the clinical significance of the DLN, the role of DLN metastasis in papillary thyroid cancer, and the relationship between tumor size, multicentricity and DLN metastasis. We also discussed the association between DLN metastasis and additional central compartment metastasis, as well as lateral compartment metastasis.

Abstract
Objectives To investigate the role of pericytes in constructing the malformed microvessels (MVs) and participating microvascular architecture heterogeneity of glioma. Methods Forty human glioma tissue samples (WHO grade II-IV) were included in present study. Observation of blood vessel patterns, quantitative analysis of endothelial cells (ECs)- and pericyte-labeled MVs and comparison between malignant grades based on single- or double-immunohistochemical staining. The MV number density (MVND), microvascular pericyte number density (MPND), and microvascular pericyte area density (MPAD) were calculated. The expression of PDGFβ was also scored after immunostaining. Results In grade II glioma, most of tumor MVs were the thin-wall CD34+ vessels with near normal morphology. In addition to thin-wall CD34+ MVs, more thick-wall MVs were found in grade III glioma, which often showed α-SMA positive. Most of MVs in grade IV glioma were in the form of plexus, curled cell cords and glomeruloid microvascular proliferation while the α-SMA+ cells were the main components. The MVs usually showed disordered arrangement, loose connection and active cell proliferation as shown by Ki67 and α-SMA coexpression. With the increase of glioma grades, the α-SMA+ MVND, CD34+ MVND and MPND were significantly augmented although the increase of CD34+ MVND but not MPAD was statistically insignificant between grade III and IV. It was interesting that some vessel-like structures only consist of α-SMA+ cells, assuming the guiding role of pericytes in angiogenesis. The expression level of PDGFβ was upregulated and directly correlated with the MPND in different glioma grades. Conclusion Hyperplasia of pericytes was one of the significant characteristics of malignant glioma and locally proliferated pericytes were the main constituent of MVs in high grade glioma. The pathological characteristics of pericytes could be used as indexes of malignant grades of glioma.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the cosmic ray (e^{+}+e^{-}) flux in the range 0.5 GeV to 1 TeV based on the analysis of 10.6 million (e^{+}+e^{-}) events collected by AMS. The statistics and the resolution of AMS provide a precision measurement of the flux. The flux is smooth and reveals new and distinct information. Above 30.2 GeV, the flux can be described by a single power law with a spectral index γ=-3.170±0.008(stat+syst)±0.008(energy scale).

Abstract
We report a new stripe rust resistance gene on chromosome 7AS in wheat and molecular markers useful for transferring it to other wheat genotypes. Several new races of the stripe rust pathogen have established throughout the wheat growing regions of China in recent years. These new races are virulent to most of the designated seedling resistance genes limiting the resistance sources. It is necessary to identify new genes for diversification and for pyramiding different resistance genes in order to achieve more durable resistance. We report here the identification of a new resistance gene, designated as Yr61, in Chinese wheat cultivar Pindong 34. A mapping population of 208 F2 plants and 128 derived F2:3 lines in a cross between Mingxian 169 and Pindong 34 was evaluated for seedling stripe rust response. A genetic map consisting of eight resistance gene analog polymorphism (RGAP), two sequence-tagged site (STS) and four simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers was constructed. Yr61 was located on the short arm of chromosome 7A and flanked by RGAP markers Xwgp5467 and Xwgp5765 about 1.9 and 3.9 cM in distance, which were successfully converted into STS markers STS5467 and STS5765b, respectively. The flanking STS markers could be used for marker-assisted selection of Yr61 in breeding programs.

Abstract
Precision measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the primary cosmic-ray electron flux in the range 0.5 to 700 GeV and the positron flux in the range 0.5 to 500 GeV are presented. The electron flux and the positron flux each require a description beyond a single power-law spectrum. Both the electron flux and the positron flux change their behavior at ∼30 GeV but the fluxes are significantly different in their magnitude and energy dependence. Between 20 and 200 GeV the positron spectral index is significantly harder than the electron spectral index. The determination of the differing behavior of the spectral indices versus energy is a new observation and provides important information on the origins of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons.

Abstract
A precision measurement by AMS of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 500 GeV based on 10.9 million positron and electron events is presented. This measurement extends the energy range of our previous observation and increases its precision. The new results show, for the first time, that above ∼200 GeV the positron fraction no longer exhibits an increase with energy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was designed to explore the pathogenesis of psoriasis and to identify potential bio-targets. Genome array technology was used to analyze the gene expression profiles of lesional and non-lesional psoriatic skin samples and normal skin samples. METHODS Gene expression profile GSE14905 was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. This included skin biopsy samples from normal healthy donors (n = 21), lesional skin biopsy samples from psoriasis patients (n = 33), and non-lesional skin biopsy samples from psoriasis patients (n = 28). Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified using the Limma package in R language. Functions of specific DEGs were predicted by Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis. A protein-protein interaction network was constructed to display the interactions among common DEGs. Finally, DAVID and WebGestalt were used to achieve a functional analysis of common DEGs. RESULTS Totals of 1020, 562, and 643 genes, respectively, were identified as being differentially expressed in normal versus lesional, normal versus non-lesional, and lesional versus non-lesional samples. The specific DEGs in the three groups were enriched for several GO terms, including mitotic cell cycle, immune response, and response to organic matter. The 40 common DEGs in the three groups may be involved in the defense response pathway in the development of psoriasis. Furthermore, three genes (RGS1, SOCS3, and NAMPT) may play key roles in distinguishing lesional and non-lesional tissues from normal tissues, and 10 genes (PTRRC, ALDH1A3, SAMSA1, C15orf48, ZC3H12A, SOD2, IL8, LTF, RHCG, and IL7R) may play key roles in distinguishing non-lesional from normal and lesional samples. CONCLUSIONS These genes may be considered as potential diagnostic markers and targets of therapeutics in psoriasis.

Abstract
To evaluate the possible prognostic value of Steroid Receptor Coactivator-1 (SRC-1) and Twist1 expression in human breast cancer, we examined SRC-1 and Twist1 expression using immunohistochemistry on tissue microarray sections containing 137 breast cancer specimens. All patients were followed up for a median of 5 years following surgery. Survival curves were generated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazard regression model to assess the prognostic values. The results showed a positive correlation between SRC-1 and Twist1 expression at protein levels (P < 0.001). Also, SRC-1 expression positively correlated with HER2 expression (P = 0.024). The protein expression of Twist1 positively associated with lymph node metastasis (P < 0.001), but inversely correlated with PR status (P = 0.041). Patients with SRC-1 or Twist1-positive expression exhibited poorer overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) than did those with SRC-1 or Twist1-negative expression (P < 0.05 for all). In addition, SRC-1-negativeive/Twist1-negative patients had the best OS and DFS (P < 0.01 for both). In multivariate survival analysis, SRC-1 expression, tumor stage, and PR were found to be independent prognostic factors related to OS (P = 0.019, < 0.001 and 0.02, respectively) and Twist1 expression, lymph node status and PR were independent predictors of DFS (P = 0.006, 0.001 and 0.029, respectively). These results suggest that a combined SRC-1/Twist1 expression status could improve the prognostic judgment for breast cancer patients.

Abstract
Maize with high grain protein and oil contents offers great advantages for human food and animal feed. In this study, grain protein contents of 282 and 263 F7:8 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) of 2 crosses were evaluated in 4 environments within and between populations. The RILs were developed from crosses between an inbred high-oil maize line and 2 normal dent inbred maize lines. A total of 16 single-population QTLs and 19 joint-population QTLs were identified for protein content, and 21 QTLs were detected for protein-oil in each of the 4 environments tested and in combination. Most of the QTLs for protein content were greatly influenced by variation among populations and environments. Seven QTLs showed generational consistency compared with QTLs detected in the 2 F2:3 populations. However, 7 and 6 QTLs were detected in only the RIL and F2:3 populations, respectively. Protein and protein-oil QTLs with the same parental effects were detected at bins 3.03-3.05, 5.04-5.06, 6.03-6.05, 8.03-8.04, and 8.04-8.06, demonstrating that tightly linked and/or pleiotropic QTLs are controlling both traits at these bins. Four single-population QTLs and 11 joint-population QTLs identified at bins 3.02-3.03, 3.05, 7.01, 8.02, 8.03, 8.04-8.05, 8.05, 9.03, and 9.05 with intervals <5 cM could be used in marker-assisted selection. Along with the previously detected QTLs qPRO1-8-1 and qPRO1-5-1 at bins 8.03-8.04 and 5.02-5.04, the QTLs detected herein could be used to develop near isogenic lines and chromosome segment substitution lines in future studies.

Overexpression of the transcription factor MEF2D in hepatocellular carcinoma sustains malignant character by suppressing G2-M transition genes. Cancer Res 2014; 74:1452-62. Abstract
The underlying molecular pathogenesis in hepatocellular carcinoma remains poorly understood. The transcription factor MEF2D promotes survival in various cell types and it seems to function as an oncogene in leukemia. However, its potential contributions to solid cancers have not been explored. In this study, we investigated MEF2D expression and function in hepatocellular carcinoma, finding that MEF2D elevation in hepatocellular carcinoma clinical specimens was associated with poor prognosis. MEF2D-positive primary hepatocellular carcinoma cells displayed a faster proliferation rate compared with MEF2D-negative cells, and silencing or promoting MEF2D expression in these settings limited or accelerated cell proliferation, respectively. Notably, MEF2D-silencing abolished hepatocellular carcinoma tumorigenicity in mouse xenograft models. Mechanistic investigations revealed that MEF2D-silencing triggered G2-M arrest in a manner associated with direct downregulation of the cell-cycle regulatory genes RPRM, GADD45A, GADD45B, and CDKN1A. Furthermore, we identified MEF2D as an authentic target of miR-122, the reduced expression of which in hepatocellular carcinoma may be responsible for MEF2D upregulation. Together, our results identify MEF2D as a candidate oncogene in hepatocellular carcinoma and a potential target for hepatocellular carcinoma therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effects of B-cell specific Maloney leukemia virus integration site 1 (Bmi1) gene on endothelial cells promoting glioma stem cell (GSC)-like phenotype. METHODS Glioblastoma cell line GL261 and brain micro-vessel endothelial cell line b.END3 were used. Transwell co-culture system, limit dilution assay, xenograft, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Western blot, fluorescence activating cell sorter (FACS) and gene knock-down assay were used to determine the GSC-like phenotype and Bmi1 gene expression in glioma cells. RESULTS Compared with the control of GL261 cell alone, (1) more and larger tumor spheres formed after co-culturing with endothelial cells (62.5% ± 1.5% vs 25.0% ± 4.6% at 40 cells/well, P = 0.000). Xenografts generated by GL261 cells with b.END3 cells appeared earlier and were larger than that by GL261 cells alone ((0.798 ± 0.297) cm(3) vs (0.362 ± 0.123) cm(3), P = 0.000); (2) CD133 positive glioma cells increased after co-culturing with endothelial cells (8.48% ± 0.78% vs 4.81% ± 0.37%, P = 0.000); (3) the expression of Bmi1 in co-cultured glioma cells was up-regulated at mRNA level (2.72 ± 0.18 vs 1.00 ± 0.15, P = 0.000) and at protein level; (4) the above phenomenon was attenuated when Bmi1 gene expression was inhibited by siRNA in glioma cells, CD133 positive portion of Bmi1-knockdown GL261 cells co-culturing with b.END3 cells decreased than that of wildtype GL261 cells (0.34% ± 0.21% vs 1.70% ± 0.69%, P = 0.025). CONCLUSION Endothelial cells promote GSC-like phenotype by up-regulating the expression of Bmi1 in glioma cells.

Abstract
A precision measurement by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer on the International Space Station of the positron fraction in primary cosmic rays in the energy range from 0.5 to 350 GeV based on 6.8 × 10(6) positron and electron events is presented. The very accurate data show that the positron fraction is steadily increasing from 10 to ∼ 250 GeV, but, from 20 to 250 GeV, the slope decreases by an order of magnitude. The positron fraction spectrum shows no fine structure, and the positron to electron ratio shows no observable anisotropy. Together, these features show the existence of new physical phenomena.

Abstract
Background High invasion and metastasis are the primary factors causing poor prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying these biological behaviors have not been completely elucidated. In this study, we investigate the molecular mechanism by which hypoxia promotes HCC invasion and metastasis through inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Methods The expression of EMT markers was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. Effect of hypoxia on induction of EMT and ability of cell migration and invasion were performed. Luciferase reporter system was used for evaluation of Snail regulation by hypoxia-inducible factor -1α (HIF-1α). Results We found that overexpression of HIF-1α was observed in HCC liver tissues and was related to poor prognosis of HCC patients. HIF-1α expression profile was correlated with the expression levels of SNAI1, E-cadherin, N-cadherin and Vimentin. Hypoxia was able to induce EMT and enhance ability of invasion and migration in HCC cells. The same phenomena were also observed in CoCl2-treated cells. The shRNA-mediated HIF-1α suppression abrogated CoCl2-induced EMT and reduced ability of migration and invasion in HCC cells. Luciferase assay showed that HIF-1α transcriptional regulated the expression of SNAI1 based on two hypoxia response elements (HREs) in SNAI1 promoter. Conclusions We demonstrated that hypoxia-stabilized HIF1α promoted EMT through increasing SNAI1 transcription in HCC cells. This data provided a potential therapeutic target for HCC treatment.

Abstract
A set of 72 microsatellite markers distributed evenly among 24 linkage groups were selected from the published genetic linkage maps of Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. In two normal diploid full-sib families, the test for Mendelian inheritance showed that genotypic segregation deviations were not significant at all analysed loci. To estimate microsatellite-centromere map distances, four meiotic gynogenetic diploid lines were produced by the activation of eggs using UV irradiated sperm of red seabream Pagrus major and cold-shock treatment to block the extrusion of the second polar body. Under the assumption of complete interference, 21 markers were located in the centromeric region, 39 in the telomeric region and the rest in the intermediate region of linkage groups. A total of 192 mitotic gynogenetic diploids from one spawn were identified by these markers. Genotype analysis showed that the number of homozygous individuals decreased as microsatellite-centromere map distance increased on each linkage group.

Aly and THO are required for assembly of the human TREX complex and association of TREX components with the spliced mRNA. Nucleic Acids Res 2012; 41:1294-306. Abstract
The mRNA export complex TREX (TREX) is known to contain Aly, UAP56, Tex1 and the THO complex, among which UAP56 is required for TREX assembly. Here, we systematically investigated the role of each human TREX component in TREX assembly and its association with the mRNA. We found that Tex1 is essentially a subunit of the THO complex. Aly, THO and UAP56 are all required for assembly of TREX, in which Aly directly interacts with THO subunits Thoc2 and Thoc5. Both Aly and THO function in linking UAP56 to the cap-binding protein CBP80. Interestingly, association of UAP56 with the spliced mRNA, but not with the pre-mRNA, requires Aly and THO. Unexpectedly, we found that Aly and THO require each other to associate with the spliced mRNA. Consistent with these biochemical results, similar to Aly and UAP56, THO plays critical roles in mRNA export. Together, we propose that Aly, THO and UAP56 form a highly integrated unit to associate with the spliced mRNA and function in mRNA export.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is a member of the CXC chemokine family, which involved in tumor growth, metastasis and angiogenesis. The aim of this study is to investigate the expression of IL-8 in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its clinicopathologic significance. METHODS The expression of IL-8 protein and the intratumoral microvessel density (MVD) were detected in 114 cases of NSCLC on tissue array by immunohistochemical method (EnVisionTM method). RESULTS The positive rate of IL-8 expression was 81.6% (93/114) in 114 cases of the primary lung cancer and 79.1% (34/43) in metastatic lymph nodes respectively. And it was remarkably higher in NSCLC with lymph node metastasis (93.0%, 40/43)) than in those without lymph node metastasis (74.6%, 53/71) (P < 0.05). IL-8 protein expression in primary lung cancer tissues was positively related to TNM stages (P < 0.05), but not to histological type, differentiation degree, age and sex of patients (P > 0.05). In addition, there was significant difference in MVD between IL-8 positive NSCLC tissues (22.1±13.6) and negative ones (14.8±11.2) (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The present study suggests that there is overexpression of IL-8 in NSCLC, which is closely related to angiogenesis, TNM stages and lymph node metastasis. Detection of IL-8 protein may be helpful to evaluate biological characteristics and therapy for NSCLC.

Abstract
Background Biological molecular markers such as proto-oncogene erbB-2 (HER-2/neu, c-erbB-2), the CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4), estrogen receptor (ER), Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA), DNA topoisomerase II (topo II), P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) were observed for changes after administration of neochemotherapy and whether these protein expression changes were correlated with response to chemotherapy. Methods Sixty-four patients with primary breast cancer who had undergone neo-adjuvant chemotherapy were enrolled in the present study. The expressions of C-erbB-2, CXCR4 and ER-α were measured by immunohistochemistry (IHC) on full tissue sections and on tissue microarrays (TMAs). PCNA, TopoII, P-gp and GST were measured by IHC on TMAs. On the other hand, CXCR4, C-erbB-2 and ER-α expressions were detected using western blot analysis to 16 pairs of fresh preoperative core biopsies. The final surgical specimens were obtained from patients with breast carcinoma who received neo-adjuvant chemotherapy and obtained a partial response (PR). Results Our data demonstrated that the levels of C-erbB-2, CXCR4 and ER-α in patients decreased after they received neo-adjuvant chemotherapy on full tissue sections and on TMAs. The PCNA level was down-regulated after receiving neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, and no significant change was observed for TopoII, P-gp and GST. The levels of C-erbB-2, CXCR4 and ER-α were also down-regulated after neo-adjuvant chemotherapy was administered, as detected by western blot. In addition, the change expressions of C-erbB-2 and CXCR4 in specimens tended to be correlated with pathological change to neo-adjuvant chemotherapy on full tissue sections and on TMAs in a Pearson chi-square analysis. Conclusions As demonstrated in our study, after breast cancer patients were treated with neo-adjuvant systemic therapy, decreased expressions of C-erbB2, ER-α and CXCR4 were observed. Down-regulated expressions of c-erbB-2 and CXCR4 may be a novel mechanism of chemotherapy; the changes of these objective markers may be useful in evaluating the clinical response of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer.

Tumor-associated microglia/macrophages enhance the invasion of glioma stem-like cells via TGF-β1 signaling pathway. THE JOURNAL OF IMMUNOLOGY 2012; 189:444-53. Abstract
The invasion of malignant glioma cells into the surrounding normal brain tissues is crucial for causing the poor outcome of this tumor type. Recent studies suggest that glioma stem-like cells (GSLCs) mediate tumor invasion. However, it is not clear whether microenvironment factors, such as tumor-associated microglia/macrophages (TAM/Ms), also play important roles in promoting GSLC invasion. In this study, we found that in primary human gliomas and orthotopical transplanted syngeneic glioma, the number of TAM/Ms at the invasive front was correlated with the presence of CD133(+) GSLCs, and these TAM/Ms produced high levels of TGF-β1. CD133(+) GSLCs isolated from murine transplanted gliomas exhibited higher invasive potential after being cocultured with TAM/Ms, and the invasiveness was inhibited by neutralization of TGF-β1. We also found that human glioma-derived CD133(+) GSLCs became more invasive upon treatment with TGF-β1. In addition, compared with CD133(-) committed tumor cells, CD133(+) GSLCs expressed higher levels of type II TGF-β receptor (TGFBR2) mRNA and protein, and downregulation of TGFBR2 with short hairpin RNA inhibited the invasiveness of GSLCs. Mechanism studies revealed that TGF-β1 released by TAM/Ms promoted the expression of MMP-9 by GSLCs, and TGFBR2 knockdown reduced the invasiveness of these cells in vivo. These results demonstrate that TAM/Ms enhance the invasiveness of CD133(+) GSLCs via the release of TGF-β1, which increases the production of MMP-9 by GSLCs. Therefore, the TGF-β1 signaling pathway is a potential therapeutic target for limiting the invasiveness of GSLCs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) aneurysms are rare but life-threatening entities. This study summarizes our experience in providing therapeutic management for true aneurysms of the SMA. METHODS Between February 1998 and March 2010, 10 patients were diagnosed with true SMA aneurysms in our hospital. Medical data for demographics, clinical presentation, diagnosis, aneurysm characteristics, treatment modalities, outcomes, and follow-up were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS Ten patients (six women, four men) were enrolled with a mean age of 56.7 years (range, 42-69 years). One patient (10%) had aneurysm rupture and presented with abdominal pain, and seven (70%) were asymptomatic. The size of nonruptured aneurysms ranged from 1.2 to 8.0 cm (mean, 3.5 cm). Of 10 patients, five received endovascular stent graft repair, two were treated surgically, two were observed, and one with aneurysm rupture died of hemorrhagic shock before surgery. The two surgical patients underwent SMA reconstruction after aneurysmectomy, and segmental bowel resection was performed in one patient after reconstruction. The overall mortality rate was 10%. Postoperative gastroparesis was identified in one patient (14.3%). Mean operation time was 3.6 hours in the surgical group and 1.3 hours in the endovascular group. Mean postoperative hospital stay for the two groups was 20.0 days and 2.2 days, respectively. Mean follow-up was 30.9 months (range, 3-72 months). Endoleak was found in one patient 3 months after endovascular repair. CONCLUSION True SMA aneurysms are uncommon entities with definite rupture risk and mortality. Compared with surgical intervention, endovascular stent graft placement is associated with less trauma and rapid recovery. It may be a promising alternative to surgical intervention. The most appropriate treatment depends on the characteristics of the lesion and the condition of the patient.

Abstract
Grain yield is the most important and complex trait in maize. In this study, a total of 258 F(9) recombinant inbred lines (RIL), derived from a cross between dent corn inbred Dan232 and popcorn inbred N04, were evaluated for eight grain yield components under four environments. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) and their epistatic interactions were detected for all traits under each environment and in combined analysis. Meta-analysis was used to integrate genetic maps and detected QTL across three generations (RIL, F(2:3) and BC(2)F(2)) derived from the same cross. In total, 103 QTL, 42 pairs of epistatic interactions and 16 meta-QTL (mQTL) were detected. Twelve out of 13 QTL with contributions (R(2)) over 15% were consistently detected in 3-4 environments (or in combined analysis) and integrated in mQTL. Only q100GW-7-1 was detected in all four environments and in combined analysis. 100qGW-1-1 had the largest R(2) (19.3-24.6%) in three environments and in combined analysis. In contrast, 35 QTL for 6 grain yield components were detected in the BC(2)F(2) and F(2:3) generations, no common QTL across three generations were located in the same marker intervals. Only 100 grain weight (100GW) QTL on chromosome 5 were located in adjacent marker intervals. Four common QTL were detected across the RIL and F(2:3) generations, and two between the RIL and BC(2)F(2) generations. Each of five important mQTL (mQTL7-1, mQTL10-2, mQTL4-1, mQTL5-1 and mQTL1-3) included 7-12 QTL associated with 2-6 traits. In conclusion, we found evidence of strong influence of genetic structure and environment on QTL detection, high consistency of major QTL across environments and generations, and remarkable QTL co-location for grain yield components. Fine mapping for five major QTL (q100GW-1-1, q100GW-7-1, qGWP-4-1, qERN-4-1 and qKR-4-1) and construction of single chromosome segment lines for genetic regions of five mQTL merit further studies and could be put into use in marker-assisted breeding.

Overexpression of ΔNp63α induces a stem cell phenotype in MCF7 breast carcinoma cell line through the Notch pathway. Cancer Sci 2010; 101:2417-24. Abstract
To elucidate a role of ΔNp63α in breast cancer, the expression levels of p63, estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, p53, CK5, cerBb-2, and Notch1 were assayed in 50 clinical breast cancer specimens using immunochemistry. P63 was highly expressed in a subset of breast cancer with basal-like features. We then transfected MCF7 cells with ΔNp63α plasmid, and assayed its cancer stem cell-like features after transfection. Overexpression of ΔNp63α in MCF7 cells increased the percentage of CD24(-) CD44(+) subpopulation from 2.2±0.2% to 25.1±1.5% (P<0.05) and led to increased cancer cell proliferation, clonogenicity, anchorage-independent growth, and the incidence of xenograft grown in vivo. In addition, ΔNp63α overexpressing cancer cells were more drug resistant. Further studies suggested ΔNp63α-induced activation of the Notch pathway may play a role in these effects. Chromatin immunoprecipitation confirmed that ΔNp63α could directly bind to Notch1. In clinical breast cancer specimens, the expression level of p63 was also found to positively correlate with the expression level of Notch1. Our results suggest that ΔNp63α might serve as a tumor initiating transcription factor in breast cancer.

Abstract
Steroid receptor coactivator-3 (SRC-3) has been reported to be overexpressed in the development and progression of many tumor types. SRC-3 has been detected in several lung cancer cell lines, but its expression and clinical significance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain unclear. In this study, 48 NSCLC tissues were collected and tissue microarrays were performed. The expression of SRC-3 was examined using nickel-intensified IHC. The results showed that of these 48 cases, 18 (37.5%) exhibited high levels of SRC-3 immunoreactivity, 23 (47.9%) exhibited moderate levels of SRC-3 immunoreactivity, and 7 (14.6%) were negative; thus, the total frequency of SRC-3 overexpression was 85.4% (41/48). This SRC-3 overexpression frequency was similar to the overexpression frequency observed for squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma (82.1% vs 90%) and for metastasis and non-metastasis patients (84.6% vs 85.7%). Data analysis demonstrated a significantly higher overexpression frequency in male patients compared with that in female patients (88.6% vs 76.9%). However, female patients tended to have higher expression levels of SRC-3, as measured by immunoreactivity, than male patients. These results demonstrate a high frequency of SRC-3 overexpression in NSCLC with a gender difference, suggesting that there is a specific role for SRC-3 in the pathogenesis of NSCLC.

Abstract
Maize endosperm accounts for more than 80% of the grain weight. Cell division and grain filling are the two key stages for endosperm development. Previous studies showed that gene expression during differential stages in endosperm development is greatly different. However, information on systematic identification and characterization of the differentially expressed genes between the two stages are limited. In this study, suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) was used to generate four subtracted cDNA libraries for the two stages using two maize inbreds with large and small grain. Totally, 4,784 differentially expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were sequenced and 902 were non-redundant, which consisted of 344 unique ESTs. Among them 192 had high sequence similarity to the GenBank entries and represent diverse of functional categories, such as metabolism, cell growth/division, transcription, signal transduction, protein destination/storage, protein synthesis and others. The expression patterns of 75.7% SSH-derived cDNAs were confirmed by reverse Northern blot and semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, and exhibited the similar results (75.0%). Genes differentially expressed between two key stages for the two inbreds were involved in diverse physiological process pathway, which might be responsible for the formation of grain weight. 43.8% (70 of the 160 unique ESTs) of the identified ESTs were assigned to 39 chromosome bins distributed over all ten maize chromosomes. Eleven ESTs were found to co-localize with previous detected QTLs for grain weight, which might be considered as the candidate genes of grain weight for further study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the expression and significance of P311 and ITGB4BP in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS Tissue microarrays were prepared from 80 NSCLC specimens and examined by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS The positive rates of P311 and ITGB4BP expression were 77.5% (62/80) and 82.5% (66/80), respectively. The double positive expression rate was 73.8% (59/80). The consistency rate was 87.5%, and there was a significant consistency between P311 and ITGB4BP expressions (Kappa = 0.611, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION There may be a new signaling pathway P311-ITGB4BP in NSCLC, and it may regulate the lung cancer cell migration.

Abstract
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection represents a serious public health problem worldwide. Development of new therapeutics against HCV has been hampered by the lack of a small-animal model. Until now, it has been unclear which host factors influence the HCV infection. It was known that human CD81 (hCD81) or low-density lipoprotein receptor (hLDLR), the putative HCV receptors, induce concentration of viral particles on the cell surface. In this study, recombinant plasmids containing hCD81 or hLDLR genes were transfected to mouse hepatoma Hepa 1-6 cells and transgenic cell lines expressing hCD81 (hCD81/1-6 cell line) or hLDLR (hLDLR/1-6 cell line) on their surface have been established. HCV infection of these cell lines showed that the virus was bound, entered the cell, and replicated inside the cell. This finding is essential for the development of mouse model for the study of HCV replication in vivo.
