A Bioinspired Gelatin-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate Coating on Titanium Implant for Bone Regeneration

Biocompatible and bio-active coatings can enhance and accelerate osseointegration via chemical binding onto substrates. Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) has been shown as a precursor to achieve mineralization in vertebrates and invertebrates under the control of biological macromolecules. This work presents a simple bioinspired Gelatin-CaPO4 (Gel-CaP) composite coating on titanium surfaces to improve osseointegration. The covalently bound Gel-CaP composite is characterized as an ACP-Gel compound via SEM, FT-IR, XRD, and HR-TEM. The amorphous compound coating exhibits a nanometer range thickness and improved elastic modulus, good wettability, and nanometric roughness. The amount of grafted carboxyl groups and theoretical thickness of the coatings are also investigated. More importantly, MC3T3 cells, an osteoblast cell line, show excellent cell proliferation and adhesion on the Gel-CaP coating. The level of osteogenic genes is considerably upregulated on Ti with Gel-CaP coatings compared to uncoated Ti, demonstrating that Gel-CaP coatings possess a unique osteogenic ability. To conclude, this work offers a new perspective on functional, bioactive titanium coatings, and Gel-CaP composites can be a low-cost and promising candidate in bone regeneration.

Bamboo-Inspired Structurally Efficient Materials with a Large Continuous Gradient

Because of its light weight and high strength, bamboo is used in many applications around the world. Natural bamboo is built from fiber-reinforced material and exhibits a porous graded architecture that provides its remarkable mechanical performance. This porosity gradient is generated through the unique distribution of densified vascular bundles. Scientists and engineers have been trying to mimic this architecture for a very long time with much of the work focusing on the effect of fiber reinforcement. However, there still lacks quantitative studies on the role of pore gradient design on mechanical properties, in part because the fabrication of bamboo-inspired graded materials is challenging. Here, the steep and continuous porosity gradient through an ingenious cellular design in Moso bamboo is revealed. The effect of gradient design on the mechanical performance is systematically studied by using 3D-printed models. The results show that not only the magnitude of gradient but also its continuity have a significant effect. By introducing a continuous and large gradient, the maximum flexural load and energy absorption capability can be increased by 40% and 110% when comparing to the structure without gradient. These bamboo-inspired cellular architectures can offer efficient solutions for the design of damage tolerant engineering structures.

An Adaptive Multispectral Mechano-Optical System for Multipurpose Applications

Mechano-optical systems with on-demand adaptability and a broad spectrum from the visible to microwave are critical for complex multiband electromagnetic (EM) applications. Most existing material systems merely have dynamic optical or microwave tunability because their EM wave response is strongly wavelength-dependent. Inspired by cephalopod skin, we develop an adaptive multispectral mechano-optical system based on bilayer acrylic dielectric elastomer (ADE)/silver nanowire (AgNW) films, which reconfigures the surface morphology between wrinkles and cracks via mechanical contraction and stretching. Such morphological evolution regulates the direct transmission/reflection and scattering behavior of visible-infrared light and simultaneously alters the conductive network in a AgNW film to influence its microwave characteristics. The designed system features switching between visible-infrared-microwave transparency and opacity, continuous regulation, wide spectral window (0.38-15.5 μm and 24,200-36,600 μm), excellent recyclability (500 times), and rapid response time (<1 s). These grant the system great potential as platforms for various promising applications such as smart windows, switchable EM devices, dynamic thermal management, adaptive visual stealth, and human motion detection.

Vacuole dynamics and popping-based motility in liquid droplets of DNA

Liquid droplets of biomolecules play key roles in organizing cellular behavior, and are also technologically relevant, yet physical studies of dynamic processes of such droplets have generally been lacking. Here, we investigate and quantify the dynamics of formation of dilute internal inclusions, i.e., vacuoles, within a model system consisting of liquid droplets of DNA 'nanostar' particles. When acted upon by DNA-cleaving restriction enzymes, these DNA droplets exhibit cycles of appearance, growth, and bursting of internal vacuoles. Analysis of vacuole growth shows their radius increases linearly in time. Further, vacuoles pop upon reaching the droplet interface, leading to droplet motion driven by the osmotic pressure of restriction fragments captured in the vacuole. We develop a model that accounts for the linear nature of vacuole growth, and the pressures associated with motility, by describing the dynamics of diffusing restriction fragments. The results illustrate the complex non-equilibrium dynamics possible in biomolecular condensates.

A novel effective bio-originated methylene blue adsorbent: the porous biosilica from three marine diatom strains of Nanofrustulum spp. (Bacillariophyta)

In the present paper, for the first time the ability of the porous biosilica originated from three marine diatom strains of 'Nanofrustulum spp.' viz. N. wachnickianum (SZCZCH193), N. shiloi (SZCZM1342), N. cf. shiloi (SZCZP1809), to eliminate MB from aqueous solutions was investigated. The highest biomass was achieved under silicate enrichment for N. wachnickianum and N. shiloi (0.98 g L-1 DW and 0.93 g L-1 DW respectively), and under 15 °C for N. cf. shiloi (2.2 g L-1 DW). The siliceous skeletons of the strains were purified with hydrogen peroxide and characterized by SEM, EDS, the N2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, TGA, and ATR-FTIR. The porous biosilica (20 mg DW) obtained from the strains i.e. SZCZCH193, SZCZM1342, SZCZP1809, showed efficiency in 77.6%, 96.8%, and 98.1% of 14 mg L-1 MB removal under pH 7 for 180 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity was calculated as 8.39, 19.02, and 15.17 mg g-1, respectively. Additionally, it was possible to increase the MB removal efficiency in alkaline (pH = 11) conditions up to 99.08% for SZCZP1809 after 120 min. Modelling revealed that the adsorption of MB follows Pseudo-first order, Bangham's pore diffusion and Sips isotherm models.

Honeycomb Biosilica in Sponges: From Understanding Principles of Unique Hierarchical Organization to Assessing Biomimetic Potential

Structural bioinspiration in modern material science and biomimetics represents an actual trend that was originally based on the bioarchitectural diversity of invertebrate skeletons, specifically, honeycomb constructs of natural origin, which have been in humanities focus since ancient times. We conducted a study on the principles of bioarchitecture regarding the unique biosilica-based honeycomb-like skeleton of the deep-sea glass sponge Aphrocallistes beatrix. Experimental data show, with compelling evidence, the location of actin filaments within honeycomb-formed hierarchical siliceous walls. Principles of the unique hierarchical organization of such formations are discussed. Inspired by poriferan honeycomb biosilica, we designed diverse models, including 3D printing, using PLA-, resin-, and synthetic-glass-prepared corresponding microtomography-based 3D reconstruction.

Bioinspired Adaptable Indwelling Microneedles for Treatment of Diabetic Ulcers

Microneedles provide an effective strategy for transdermal drug delivery. Many endeavors have been devoted to developing smart microneedles that can respond to and interact with pathophysiological environments. Here, novel bioinspired adaptable indwelling microneedles with therapeutic exosome encapsulation are presented for diabetic wound healing by a combined fabrication strategy of template replication and 3D transfer printing. Such microneedles are composed of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-exosomes-encapsulated adjustable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel needle tips and detachable 3M medical tape supporting substrate. As the mechanical strength of the PVA hydrogel is ionically responsive due to Hofmeister effects, the hardness of the resultant microneedle tips can be upregulated by sulfate ions to ensure skin penetration and be softened by nitrate ions after tip-substrate detachment to adapt to the surrounding tissue and release exosomes. Because the MSC-exosomes can effectively activate fibroblasts, vascular endothelial cells, and macrophages, the indwelling microneedles are demonstrated with the function of promoting tissue regeneration and diabetic wound healing in full-thickness cutaneous wounds of diabetic rat models. These features indicate that the bioinspired adaptable indwelling microneedles are with practical values and clinical prospects in tissue and wound regeneration.

In situ continuous Dopa supply by responsive artificial enzyme for the treatment of Parkinson's disease

Oral dihydroxyphenylalanine (Dopa) administration to replenish neuronal dopamine remains the most effective treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). However, unlike the continuous and steady dopamine signaling in normal neurons, oral Dopa induces dramatic fluctuations in plasma Dopa levels, leading to Dopa-induced dyskinesia. Herein, we report a functional nucleic acid-based responsive artificial enzyme (FNA-Fe3O4) for in situ continuous Dopa production. FNA-Fe3O4 can cross the blood-brain barrier and target diseased neurons relying on transferrin receptor aptamer. Then, FNA-Fe3O4 responds to overexpressed α-synuclein mRNA in diseased neurons for antisense oligonucleotide treatment and fluorescence imaging, while converting to tyrosine aptamer-based artificial enzyme (Apt-Fe3O4) that mimics tyrosine hydroxylase for in situ continuous Dopa production. In vivo FNA-Fe3O4 treatment results in recovery of Dopa and dopamine levels and decrease of pathological overexpressed α-synuclein in PD mice model, thus ameliorating motor symptoms and memory deficits. The presented functional nucleic acid-based responsive artificial enzyme strategy provides a more neuron friendly approach for the diagnosis and treatment of PD.

Non-enzymatic oligonucleotide ligation in coacervate protocells sustains compartment-content coupling

Modern cells are complex chemical compartments tightly regulated by an underlying DNA-encoded program. Achieving a form of coupling between molecular content, chemical reactions, and chassis in synthetic compartments represents a key step to the assembly of evolvable protocells but remains challenging. Here, we design coacervate droplets that promote non-enzymatic oligonucleotide polymerization and that restructure as a result of the reaction dynamics. More specifically, we rationally exploit complexation between end-reactive oligonucleotides able to stack into long physical polymers and a cationic azobenzene photoswitch to produce three different phases-soft solids, liquid crystalline or isotropic coacervates droplets-each of them having a different impact on the reaction efficiency. Dynamical modulation of coacervate assembly and dissolution via trans-cis azobenzene photo-isomerization is used to demonstrate cycles of light-actuated oligonucleotide ligation. Remarkably, changes in the population of polynucleotides during polymerization induce phase transitions due to length-based DNA self-sorting to produce multiphase coacervates. Overall, by combining a tight reaction-structure coupling and environmental responsiveness, our reactive coacervates provide a general route to the non-enzymatic synthesis of polynucleotides and pave the way to the emergence of a primitive compartment-content coupling in membrane-free protocells.

A Comprehensive Analysis of the Intrinsic Visible Fluorescence Emitted by Peptide/Protein Amyloid-like Assemblies

Amyloid aggregation is a widespread process that involves proteins and peptides with different molecular complexity and amino acid composition. The structural motif (cross-β) underlying this supramolecular organization generates aggregates endowed with special mechanical and spectroscopic properties with huge implications in biomedical and technological fields, including emerging precision medicine. The puzzling ability of these assemblies to emit intrinsic and label-free fluorescence in regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, such as visible and even infrared, usually considered to be forbidden in the polypeptide chain, has attracted interest for its many implications in both basic and applied science. Despite the interest in this phenomenon, the physical basis of its origin is still poorly understood. To gain a global view of the available information on this phenomenon, we here provide an exhaustive survey of the current literature in which original data on this fluorescence have been reported. The emitting systems have been classified in terms of their molecular complexity, amino acid composition, and physical state. Information about the wavelength of the radiation used for the excitation as well as the emission range/peak has also been retrieved. The data collected here provide a picture of the complexity of this multifaceted phenomenon that could be helpful for future studies aimed at defining its structural and electronic basis and/or stimulating new applications.

Bioinspired artificial spider silk photocatalyst for the high-efficiency capture and inactivation of bacteria aerosols

Bioaerosol can cause the spread of disease, and therefore, capture and inactivation of bioaerosols is desirable. However, filtration systems can easily become blocked, and are often unable to inactivate the bioaerosol once it is captured. Herein, we reported a bioinspired artificial spider silk (ASS) photocatalyst, consisting of a periodic spindle structure of TiO2 on nylon fiber that can efficiently capture and concentrate airborne bacteria, followed by photocatalytic inactivation in situ, without a power-supply exhaust system. The ASS photocatalyst exhibits a higher capture capacity than the nylon fiber substrate and a photocatalytic inactivation efficiency of 99.99% obtained under 4 h irradiation. We found that the capture capacity of the ASS photocatalyst can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of hydrophilicity, Laplace pressure differences caused by the size of the spindle knots and surface energy gradients induced by surface roughness. The bacteria captured by the ASS photocatalyst are inactivated by photocatalysis within droplets or at the air/photocatalyst interfaces. This strategy paves the way for constructing materials for bioaerosol purification.

Bioinspired Super Thermal Insulating, Strong and Low Carbon Cement Aerogel for Building Envelope

The energy crisis has arisen as the most pressing concern and top priority for policymakers, with buildings accounting for over 40% of global energy consumption. Currently, single-function envelopes cannot satisfy energy efficiency for next-generation buildings. Designing buildings with high mechanical robustness, thermal insulation properties, and more functionalities has attracted worldwide attention. Further optimization based on bioinspired design and material efficiency improvement has been adopted as effective approaches to achieve satisfactory performance. Herein, inspired by the strong and porous cuttlefish bone, a cement aerogel through self-assembly of calcium aluminum silicate hydrate nanoparticles (C-A-S-H, a major component in cement) in a polymeric solution as a building envelop is developed. The as-synthesized cement aerogel demonstrates ultrahigh mechanical performance in terms of stiffness (315.65 MPa) and toughness (14.68 MJ m^-3 ). Specifically, the highly porous microstructure with multiscale pores inside the cement aerogel greatly inhibits heat transfer, therefore achieving ultralow thermal conductivity (0.025 W m^-1 K^-1 ). Additionally, the inorganic C-A-S-H nanoparticles in cement aerogel form a barrier against fire for good fire retardancy (limit oxygen index, LOI ≈ 46.26%, UL94-V0). The versatile cement aerogel featuring high mechanical robustness, remarkable thermal insulation, light weight, and fire retardancy is a promising candidate for practical building applications.

Bioinspired MoS2 Nanosheet-Modified Carbon Fibers for Synergetic Bacterial Elimination and Wound Disinfection

Bacterial infection is one of the most frequent wound complications and has become a major public health concern. Increasing resistance to antibiotics has been noted with these agents broadly used in wound management. It is an urgent demand to develop alternative antibacterial strategies with a reduced chance of resistance. Herein, a Nepenthes-mimicking nanosheet array of MoS₂ on carbon fibers (CF-MoS₂ ) is proposed to achieve dual bactericidal activities. First, the sharp edges of synthesized surfaces are capable of inducing physical disruption of cell membranes, demonstrating mechanical antibacterial activity like their natural counterparts. Second, in the presence of near-infrared light, bioinspired CF-MoS₂ nanosheets are able to cause the death of damaged bacteria owing to their inherent photothermal properties. Such dual-functional modes endow the surfaces with nearly 100% killing efficiency for highly concentrated Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Furthermore, their potential to be applied as wound dressings for photothermal treatment of infectious wounds is also investigated in vivo. Bioinspired CF-MoS₂ dressings show advantages of synergistic disinfection and efficient promotion of wound regeneration. It is foreseen that this high-performance and multifunctional CF-MoS₂ could afford a feasible broad-spectrum treatment for non-antibiotic disinfection.

New insights in polydopamine formation via surface adsorption

Polydopamine is a biomimetic self-adherent polymer, which can be easily deposited on a wide variety of materials. Despite the rapidly increasing interest in polydopamine-based coatings, the polymerization mechanism and the key intermediate species formed during the deposition process are still controversial. Herein, we report a systematic investigation of polydopamine formation on halloysite nanotubes; the negative charge and high surface area of halloysite nanotubes favour the capture of intermediates that are involved in polydopamine formation and decelerate the kinetics of the process, to unravel the various polymerization steps. Data from X-ray photoelectron and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies demonstrate that in the initial stage of polydopamine deposition, oxidative coupling reaction of the dopaminechrome molecules is the main reaction pathway that leads to formation of polycatecholamine oligomers as an intermediate and the post cyclization of the linear oligomers occurs subsequently. Furthermore, TRIS molecules are incorporated into the initially formed oligomers.

Polarity and chirality control of an active fluid by passive nematic defects

Much like passive materials, active systems can be affected by the presence of imperfections in their microscopic order, called defects, that influence macroscopic properties. This suggests the possibility to steer collective patterns by introducing and controlling defects in an active system. Here we show that a self-assembled, passive nematic is ideally suited to control the pattern formation process of an active fluid. To this end, we force microtubules to glide inside a passive nematic material made from actin filaments. The actin nematic features self-assembled half-integer defects that steer the active microtubules and lead to the formation of macroscopic polar patterns. Moreover, by confining the nematic in circular geometries, chiral loops form. We find that the exact positioning of nematic defects in the passive material deterministically controls the formation and the polarity of the active flow, opening the possibility of efficiently shaping an active material using passive defects.

Polymer-Rich Dense Phase Can Concentrate Metastable Silica Precursors and Regulate Their Mineralization

Multistep mineralization processes are pivotal in the fabrication of functional materials and are often characterized by far from equilibrium conditions and high supersaturation. Interestingly, such 'nonclassical' mineralization pathways are widespread in biological systems, even though concentrating molecules well beyond their saturation level is incompatible with cellular homeostasis. Here, we show how polymer phase separation can facilitate bioinspired silica formation by passively concentrating the inorganic building blocks within the polymer dense phase. The high affinity of the dense phase to mobile silica precursors generates a diffusive flux against the concentration gradient, similar to dynamic equilibrium, and the resulting high supersaturation leads to precipitation of insoluble silica. Manipulating the chemistry of the dense phase allows to control the delicate interplay between polymer chemistry and silica precipitation. These results connect two phase transition phenomena, mineralization and coacervation, and offer a framework to achieve better control of mineral formation.

Enhancing CAR-T cell functionality in a patient-specific manner

Patient responses to autologous CD19 chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies are limited by insufficient and inconsistent cellular functionality. Here, we show that controlling the precise level of stimulation during T-cell activation to accommodate individual differences in the donor cells will dictate the functional attributes of CAR-T cell products. The functionality of CAR-T cell products, consisting of a diverse set of blood samples derived from healthy donors, acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and chronic lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL) patient samples, representing a range of patient health status, is tested upon culturing on artificial antigen-presenting cell scaffolds to deliver T-cell stimulatory ligands (anti-CD3/anti-CD28) at highly defined densities. A clear relationship is observed between the dose of stimulation, the phenotype of the T-cell blood sample prior to T-cell activation, and the functionality of the resulting CAR-T cell products. We present a model, based on this dataset, that predicts the precise stimulation needed to manufacture a desired CAR-T cell product, given the input T-cell attributes in the initial blood sample. These findings demonstrate a simple approach to enhance CAR-T functionality by personalizing the level of stimulation during T-cell activation to enable flexible manufacturing of more consistent and potent CAR-T cells.

Biomolecular condensates formed by designer minimalistic peptides

Inspired by the role of intracellular liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in formation of membraneless organelles, there is great interest in developing dynamic compartments formed by LLPS of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) or short peptides. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the formation of biomolecular condensates have not been fully elucidated, rendering on-demand design of synthetic condensates with tailored physico-chemical functionalities a significant challenge. To address this need, here we design a library of LLPS-promoting peptide building blocks composed of various assembly domains. We show that the LLPS propensity, dynamics, and encapsulation efficiency of compartments can be tuned by changes to the peptide composition. Specifically, with the aid of Raman and NMR spectroscopy, we show that interactions between arginine and aromatic amino acids underlie droplet formation, and that both intra- and intermolecular interactions dictate droplet dynamics. The resulting sequence-structure-function correlation could support the future development of compartments for a variety of applications.

A natural biological adhesive from snail mucus for wound repair

The discovery of natural adhesion phenomena and mechanisms has advanced the development of a new generation of tissue adhesives in recent decades. In this study, we develop a natural biological adhesive from snail mucus gel, which consists a network of positively charged protein and polyanionic glycosaminoglycan. The malleable bulk adhesive matrix can adhere to wet tissue through multiple interactions. The biomaterial exhibits excellent haemostatic activity, biocompatibility and biodegradability, and it is effective in accelerating the healing of full-thickness skin wounds in both normal and diabetic male rats. Further mechanistic study shows it effectively promotes the polarization of macrophages towards the anti-inflammatory phenotype, alleviates inflammation in chronic wounds, and significantly improves epithelial regeneration and angiogenesis. Its abundant heparin-like glycosaminoglycan component is the main active ingredient. These findings provide theoretical and material insights into bio-inspired tissue adhesives and bioengineered scaffold designs.

New Class of Multifunctional Bioinspired Microlattice with Excellent Sound Absorption, Damage Tolerance, and High Specific Strength

Although mutually independent, simultaneous sound absorption and superior mechanical properties are often sought after in a material. One main challenge in achieving such a material will be on how to design it. Herein, we propose a bamboo-inspired design strategy to overcome the aforementioned challenges. Building on top of the basic octet-truss design, we introduce a hollow-tube architecture to achieve lightweight property and mechanical robustness and a septum-chamber architecture to introduce acoustic resonant cells. The concept is experimentally verified through samples fabricated using selective laser melting with the Inconel 718 alloy. High sound absorption coefficients (>0.99) with broadband spectra, damage-tolerant behavior, high specific strength (up to 81.2 MPa·cm3/g), and high specific energy absorption of 40.1 J/g have been realized in this design. The sound absorption capability is attributed to Helmholtz resonance through the pore-and-cavity morphology of the structure. Microscopically speaking, dissipation primarily occurs via the viscous frictional flow and thermal boundary layers on the air and microlattice interactions at the narrow pores. The high strength is in turn attributed to the near-membrane state of stress in the plate structures and the excellent strength of the base material. Overall, this work presents a new design concept for developing multifunctional metamaterials.

Artificial optical synaptic devices with ultra-low power consumption

A BP/CdS heterostructure-based artificial photonic synapse with an ultra-low power consumption is proposed, presenting great potential in high-performance neuromorphic vision systems.

3D-Bioprinted Phantom with Human Skin Phototypes for Biomedical Optics

3D-bioprinted skin-mimicking phantoms with skin colors ranging across the Fitzpatrick scale are reported. These tools can help understand the impact of skin phototypes on biomedical optics. Synthetic melanin nanoparticles of different sizes (70-500 nm) and clusters are fabricated to mimic the optical behavior of melanosome. The absorption coefficient and reduced scattering coefficient of the phantoms are comparable to real human skin. Further the melanin content and distribution in the phantoms versus real human skins are validated via photoacoustic (PA) imaging. The PA signal of the phantom can be improved by: 1) increasing melanin size (3-450-fold), 2) increasing clustering (2-10.5-fold), and 3) increasing concentration (1.3-8-fold). Then, multiple biomedical optics tools (e.g., PA, fluorescence imaging, and photothermal therapy) are used to understand the impact of skin tone on these modalities. These well-defined 3D-bioprinted phantoms may have value in translating biomedical optics and reducing racial bias.

Treatment of peanut allergy and colitis in mice via the intestinal release of butyrate from polymeric micelles

The microbiome modulates host immunity and aids the maintenance of tolerance in the gut, where microbial and food-derived antigens are abundant. Yet modern dietary factors and the excessive use of antibiotics have contributed to the rising incidence of food allergies, inflammatory bowel disease and other non-communicable chronic diseases associated with the depletion of beneficial taxa, including butyrate-producing Clostridia. Here we show that intragastrically delivered neutral and negatively charged polymeric micelles releasing butyrate in different regions of the intestinal tract restore barrier-protective responses in mouse models of colitis and of peanut allergy. Treatment with the butyrate-releasing micelles increased the abundance of butyrate-producing taxa in Clostridium cluster XIVa, protected mice from an anaphylactic reaction to a peanut challenge and reduced disease severity in a T-cell-transfer model of colitis. By restoring microbial and mucosal homoeostasis, butyrate-releasing micelles may function as an antigen-agnostic approach for the treatment of allergic and inflammatory diseases.

Rational Design of Soft-Hard Interfaces through Bioinspired Engineering

Soft-hard tissue interfaces in nature present a diversity of hierarchical transitions in composition and structure to address the challenge of stress concentrations that would otherwise arise at their interface. The translation of these into engineered materials holds promise for improved function of biomedical interfaces. Here, soft-hard tissue interfaces found in the body in health and disease, and the application of the diverse, functionally graded, and hierarchical structures that they present to bioinspired engineering materials are reviewed. A range of such bioinspired engineering materials and associated manufacturing technologies that are on the horizon in interfacial tissue engineering, hydrogel bioadhesion at the interfaces, and healthcare and medical devices are described.

Anomalous inapplicability of nacre-like architectures as impact-resistant templates in a wide range of impact velocities

Nacre is generally regarded as tough body armor, but it was often smashed by predators with a certain striking speed. Nacre-like architectures have been demonstrated to dissipate abundant energy by tablets sliding at static or specific low-speed loads, but whether they're still impact-resistant templates in a wide range of impact velocities remains unclear. Here, we find an anomalous phenomenon that nacre-like structures show superior energy-dissipation ability only in a narrow range of low impact velocities, while they exhibit lower impact resistance than laminated structures when impact velocity exceeds a critical value. This is because the tablets sliding in nacre-like structure occurs earlier and wider at low impact velocities, while it becomes localized at excessive impact velocities. Such anomalous phenomenon remains under different structural sizes and boundary conditions. It further inspires us to propose a hybrid architecture design strategy that achieves optimal impact resistance in a wide range of impact velocities.
