Abstract
We have previously shown that dietary red palm oil (RPO) supplementation improves functional recovery in hearts subjected to ischaemia-reperfusion. However, little knowledge exists concerning the effects of RPO supplementation of a high-cholesterol diet on ischaemia-reperfusion injury. The signalling mechanisms responsible for RPO's effects in the presence of cholesterol also remain to be elucidated. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the effects of RPO, given with a high-cholesterol diet, on mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) phosphorylation and apoptosis. Long-Evans rats were fed a control diet, a control diet containing 2% cholesterol, or a control diet containing 2% cholesterol and 7 g RPO per kg (CRPO) for 5 weeks. Hearts were excised and mounted on an isolated working heart perfusion apparatus. Cardiac function was measured after which hearts were freeze-clamped and used to assess MAPK phosphorylation and to evaluate apoptosis. Cholesterol supplementation caused a poor aortic output (AO) recovery compared with the control group (35.5 (sem 6.2) v. 55.4 (sem 2.5) %), but when RPO was added, the percentage AO increased significantly. The cholesterol group's poor AO was associated with a significant increase in p38-MAPK phosphorylation, whereas the CRPO-supplemented group showed as significant reduction in p38-MAPK phosphorylation when compared with the cholesterol-supplemented group. This significant reduction in p38-MAPK was also associated with reduced apoptosis as indicated by significant reductions in caspase-3 and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage.

Abstract
The aim of our present study was to compare the efficiency of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) and fish oil in modulating atherogenic risk markers. Adult male hamsters were given a cholesterol-rich diet (0·6 g/kg) for 8 weeks; the diet was supplemented with 5 gcis-9,trans-11-CLA isomer/kg, 12 g CLA mixture (CLA-mix)/kg, 12 g fish oil/kg or 12 g fish oil + 12 g CLA-mix/kg. The plasma cholesterol status was improved only with thecis-9,trans-11-CLA (HDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol:LDL-cholesterol ratio,P<0·05), but was of borderline significance for CLA-mix (HDL-cholesterol:LDL-cholesterol ratio,P=0·06), with an increase (33–40 %) in the liver lipoprotein receptors (scavenger receptor-type I and LDL ApoB/E receptor) and HDL-binding protein 2 (P<0·05). A 100 % pigment gallstones incidence and a slight insulin resistance (homeostatic model assessment index) were observed in the CLA-mix-fed hamsters (P=−0·031). In comparison, fish-oil feeding alone improved merely the scavenger receptor-type I and HDL-binding protein 2 liver status and faeces sterol output. For most of our present observations, the concomitant intake of fish oil and CLA-mix gave dominant effects that were exclusive and specific to one or the other oil. In conclusion, part of the beneficial effects of CLA in the present study can be ascribed to thecis-9,trans-11-isomer, and these did not generally overlap with those of fish oil. In addition, the CLA-mix effects are clearly affected by the marine (n-3) fatty acids.

Abstract
There have been numerous efforts to alter the lipid content of cardiovascular tissues. Although equally important, only limited information is available about musculoskeletal tissues. I characterized joint and bone marrow lipids in patients having joint replacement surgery and explored the effects of fish oils and statins on lipid composition in bone marrow and joint fluid. Joint drainage catheters were used to collect marrow lipids from 84 patients having 128 hip and knee replacements for osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, and femoral neck fractures (osteoporosis). Statins reduced the amount of lipid by 22% in patients with osteoporosis, 26% in patients with osteoarthritis, and 41% in patients with osteonecrosis compared with pretreatment lipid levels in the same patients. Taking fish oils reduced the amount of lipid in bone marrow by 20%. Lipid profiles of disturbed marrow and joint fluid from patients who took statins or dietary fish oil showed an increase in the proportion of unsaturated fatty acids and longer-chain fatty acids relative to pretreatment profiles. The ability to change the amount and character of bone and joint lipids may have major importance for strengthening bone, reducing the severity or preventing osteonecrosis, and enhancing joint lubrication.

Abstract
A growing awareness and understanding of the profiles of local children in County Durham, UK, experiencing learning and behavioural difficulties throughout the education system, has resulted in a number of school based nutritional intervention studies being undertaken. Evidence suggests that some children and young adults with developmental difficulties have a deficiency of particular omega 3 and omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids and supplementation with these nutrients can have an impact on their behaviour, concentration and performance on standardised assessments. The first randomised placebo controlled trial to be carried out on children in Durham with developmental coordination disorder has demonstrated significant effects of fatty acid supplementation on behaviour, reading and spelling performance. We are conducting further scientific studies within Durham and neighbouring Authorities in the North of England to be published at a future time. We have also carried out a number of open label treatment studies within schools to help us understand better the role that nutritional intervention can play across a broader range of age groups and abilities. The results suggest positive outcomes for a substantial proportion of children who are more able to engage with the educational opportunities presented to them. This is an important finding to be shared with educationalists, health professionals and importantly the parents.

Abstract
Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that the increased intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids significantly reduces the risk of ischemic cardiovascular disease, but no investigations have been performed in hereditary cardiomyopathies with diffusely damaged myocardium. In the present study, delta-sarcoglycan-null cardiomyopathic hamsters were fed from weaning to death with an alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)-enriched versus standard diet. Results demonstrated a great accumulation of ALA and eicosapentaenoic acid and an increased eicosapentaenoic/arachidonic acid ratio in cardiomyopathic hamster hearts, correlating with the preservation of myocardial structure and function. In fact, ALA administration preserved plasmalemma and mitochondrial membrane integrity, thus maintaining proper cell/extracellular matrix contacts and signaling, as well as a normal gene expression profile (myosin heavy chain isoforms, atrial natriuretic peptide, transforming growth factor-beta1) and a limited extension of fibrotic areas within ALA-fed cardiomyopathic hearts. Consequently, hemodynamic indexes were safeguarded, and more than 60% of ALA-fed animals were still alive (mean survival time, 293+/-141.8 days) when all those fed with standard diet were deceased (mean survival time, 175.9+/-56 days). Therefore, the clinically evident beneficial effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are mainly related to preservation of myocardium structure and function and the attenuation of myocardial fibrosis.

Abstract
The final proof about the specific mechanisms by which the different components of olive oil, the principal source of fat in a typical "Mediterranean diet", exert their potential protective effects on the promotion and progression of several human cancers requires further investigations. A recent discovery that dietary fatty acids can interact with the human genome by regulating the amount and/or activity of transcription factors has opened a whole new line of research aimed to molecularly corroborate the ant-cancer benefits of the olive oil-based Mediterranean diet and the underlying mechanisms. Our most recent findings reveal that oleic acid (OA; 18:1n-9), the main olive oil's monounsaturated fatty acid, can suppress the overexpression of HER2 (erbB-2), a well-characterized oncogene playing a key role in the etiology, invasive progression and metastasis in several human cancers. First, exogenous supplementation with physiological concentrations of OA significantly down-regulates HER2-coded p185(Her-2/neu) oncoprotein in human cancer cells naturally harboring amplification of the HER gene. Second, OA exposure specifically represses the transcriptional activity of the human HER2 gene promoter in tumor-derived cell lines naturally exhibiting HER2 gene amplification and p185(Her-2/neu) protein overexpression but not in cancer cells expressing physiological levels of HER2. Third, OA treatment induces the up-regulation of the Ets protein PEA3 (a transcriptional repressor of the HER2 gene promoter) solely in cancer cells naturally displaying HER2 gene amplification. Fourth, HER2 gene promoter bearing a PEA3 site-mutated sequence cannot be negatively regulated by OA, while treatment with OA fails to repress the expression of a human full-length HER2 cDNA controlled by a SV40 viral promoter. Fifth, OA-induced inhibition of HER2 promoter activity does not occur if HER2 gene-amplified cancer cells do no concomitantly exhibit high levels of Fatty Acid Synthase (FASN; Oncogenic antigen-519) as specific depletion of FASN, which itself similarly suppresses HER2 overexpression by inducing PEA3-dependent repression of HER2 gene promoter, strongly antagonizes the inhibitory effects of OA on HER2 gene promoter activity. Considering that OA treatment efficiently blocks FASN activity and down-regulates FASN protein expression, it is reasonable to suggest that an accumulation of supra-physiological concentrations of the FASN substrate malonyl-CoA, due to its reduced utilization by FASN in the presence of exogenous OA, appears to act as an indicator of "cell fuel" availability capable to suppress HER2 expression via formation of inhibitory "PEA3 protein-PEA3 DNA binding site" complexes on the endogenous HER2 promoter. Indeed, malonyl-CoA on its own dramatically decreases HER2 promoter activity, while OA or malonyl-CoA similarly up-regulates PEA3 gene promoter activity. This previously unrecognized ability of OA to directly affect the expression of a cluster of interrelated human cancer genes (i.e., HER2, FASN and PEA3) should open a new line of research aimed to explore the anti-cancer effects of OA. Certainly, an appropriate dietary intervention reproducing this prominent anti-oncogenic feature of the "Mediterranean diet" must be carried out in animal models and human pilot studies in the future. Only then we will know whether the old "Mediterranean dietary traditions" will become a new molecular approach in the management of cancer disease.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in developed countries. In Canada, in 1999, cardiovascular disease was responsible for 36% of all deaths. Ischemic heart disease accounts for the greatest percentage of these deaths (20% of all deaths), half of which are due to the acute effects of myocardial infarction. The other half are related to the late manifestations and complications of myocardial infarction. Once coronary arteriosclerosis has reached the point where it results in myocardial infarction, two main complications can ensue, loss of myocardial function and disturbance of cardiac rhythm. Progressive loss of myocardial pump function results in the syndrome of congestive heart failure. Abnormalities of the heart rhythm result in ventricular fibrillation, which is the direct cause of sudden death. Congestive heart failure rates have been easy to track because of the frequent need for hospitalization and we know from analysis of administrative databases that the annual rate of death from heart failure is about 2.5% in Canada. Sudden death, however most often occurs at home and without warning, making it much more difficult to quantitate its impact. However, the most conservative estimates suggest that no less than 25% of deaths in patients with a diagnosis of ischemic heart disease are due to ventricular fibrillation.

Abstract
AIM To update dietetic guidelines based on systematic review evidence on dietary advice to prevent further events in people with existing cardiovascular disease (CVD) (secondary prevention). METHODS The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE and EMBASE were comprehensively searched to January 2005 for systematic reviews on aspects of diet and heart health. Reviews were included if they searched systematically for randomized controlled trials relating to diet and secondary prevention of CVD. Each review was critically appraised by at least two members of the UK Heart Health and Thoracic Dietitians Group. The quality and results of each review were discussed and summarized at a group meeting. RESULTS Evidence-based strategies that reduce cardiovascular events in those with CVD include reduction in saturated fat and substitution with unsaturated fats. Individuals who have suffered a myocardial infarction may also benefit from adopting a Mediterranean type diet and increasing intake of omega 3 fats, but it is not clear whether they are beneficial for all patients with CVD. There is no systematic review evidence to support the use of antioxidant vitamins supplements, low glycaemic index diets, or homocysteine lowering therapies in this group. CONCLUSION There remains good evidence that reducing saturated fat reduces morbidity in patients with CVD. This advice is consistent for most manifestations of CVD, with the addition of Mediterranean dietary advice and increased omega 3 fats for those who have had a myocardial infarction.

Abstract
30 years ago the observation of a lower incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Inuits (Eskimos) was related to the higher fish consumption when compared to the residual Danish population. Clinical studies confirmed this finding. It was explained by the higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in fish, especially of omega-3 PUFAs. Experimental studies in cell cultures and also in animals with and without infarction models verified the anti-arrhythmic effect of omega-3 PUFAs among other possible contributing factors when compared to other fatty acids. In clinical studies a significant reduction (ca. 40%) of sudden cardiac deaths (SCD) could be found in patients after an acute myocardial infarction, if they were treated with at least 1 g omega-3 PUFAs daily, either by consumption of fish twice weekly or of a highly purified preparation omega-3 PUFAs in capsules. These findings led to recommendations of the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology to a higher fish consumption and/or the daily intake of 1 g omega-3 PUFAs for primary and especially for secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The much fewer side-effects, and the standardised dosage on one hand and the negative effect of the sometimes higher mercury content of fish make the intake of omega-3 PUFAs as capsules the better choice.

Abstract
Medical progress has reduced the mortality from infectious diseases in most countries, but allergic diseases have become more prevalent worldwide over the same period, especially in industrialized countries. This has prompted speculation that modern lifestyles have altered the relationship between heredity and environment so as to promote development of an atopic phenotype when exposure to infection decreases. A healthy uterine microenvironment is known to favor Th2 lymphocyte development. However, some evidence suggests that persistence of the Th2 pattern of immunity directs the developing organism's immune response towards a long-lasting atopic phenotype. Even though the outcome also depends on other factors (such as infection, functional state of the intestinal microflora, and exposure to environmental allergens at times critical to development), it seems that the immune system during the perinatal period is responsive to interventions that are no longer effective in adulthood. We have reviewed the literature accessible through Medline to identify recent advances in the prevention of allergic disease through interventions in the fetal-maternal relationship. Diet seems to have a significant impact on the immunological profile of the pregnant uterus, as well as on the postnatal development of allergic disease in the offspring, as suggested by the effects of probiotic bacteria and by manipulations of the dietary content of polyunsaturated fatty acids and antioxidants. This highlights the need for further studies, in order to define the best intervention methods, the most appropriate time interval and the individuals who will most likely benefit from them.

Abstract
Olive oil is an integral ingredient of the "Mediterranean diet" and accumulating evidence suggests that it may have a potential role in lowering the risk of several types of cancers. The mechanisms by which the cancer-preventing effects of olive oil can be performed, however, are not known. We recently hypothesized that a novel molecular explanation concerning the anti-cancer actions of olive oil may relate to the ability of its monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) oleic acid (OA; 18:1n-9) to specifically regulate cancer-related oncogenes. Supporting our hypothesis, exogenous supplementation of cultured breast cancer cells with physiological concentrations of OA was found to suppress the overexpression of HER2 (Her-2/neu, erbB-2), a well-characterized oncogene playing a key role in the etiology, progression and response to chemotherapy and endocrine therapy in approximately 20% of breast carcinomas. OA treatment was also found to synergistically enhance the efficacy of trastuzumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody binding with high affinity to the ectodomain (ECD) of the Her2-coded p185(HER2) oncoprotein. Moreover, OA exposure significantly diminished the proteolytic cleavage of the ECD of HER2 and, consequently, its activation status, a crucial molecular event that determines both the aggressive behavior and the response to trastuzumab of Her2-overexpressing breast carcinomas. Our most recent findings further reveal that OA exposure may suppresses HER2 at the transcriptional level by up-regulating the expression of the Ets protein PEA3 -a DNA-binding protein that specifically blocks HER2 promoter activity- in breast, ovarian and stomach cancer cell lines. This anti-HER2 property of OA offers a previously unrecognized molecular mechanism by which olive oil may regulate the malignant behavior of cancer cells. From a clinical perspective, it could provide an effective means of influencing the outcome of Her-2/neu-overexpressing human carcinomas with poor prognosis. Indeed, OA-induced transcriptional repression of HER2 oncogene may represent a novel genomic explanation linking "Mediterranean diet", olive oil and cancer as it seems to equally operate in various types of Her-2/neu-related carcinomas.

Abstract
Despite progress that has been made in the treatment of asthma, the prevalence and burden of this disease has continued to increase. While pharmacological treatment of asthma is usually highly effective, medications may have significant side effects or exhibit tachyphylaxis. Alternative therapies for treatment that reduce the dose requirements of pharmacological interventions would be beneficial, and could potentially reduce the public health burden of this disease. Ecological and temporal data suggest that dietary factors may have a role in recent increases in the prevalence of asthma. A possible contributing factor to the increased incidence of asthma in Western societies may be the consumption of a proinflammatory diet. In the typical Western diet, 20- to 25-fold more omega (n)-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) than n-3 PUFA are consumed, which promotes the release of proinflammatory arachidonic acid metabolites (leukotrienes and prostanoids). This review will analyze the evidence for the health effects of n-3 PUFA in asthma- and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB). While clinical data evaluating the effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in asthma has been equivocal, it has recently been shown that fish oil supplementation, rich in n-3 PUFA, reduces airway narrowing, medication use, and proinflammatory mediator generation in nonatopic elite athletes with EIB. These findings are provocative and suggest that dietary fish oil supplementation may be a viable treatment modality and/or adjunct therapy in asthma and EIB.

Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS). Oligodendrocyte damage and subsequent axonal demyelination is a hallmark of this disease. Different pathomechanisms, for example, immune-mediated inflammation, oxidative stress and excitotoxicity, are involved in the immunopathology of MS. The risk of developing MS is associated with increased dietary intake of saturated fatty acids. Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and antioxidant deficiencies along with decreased cellular antioxidant defence mechanisms have been observed in MS patients. Furthermore, antioxidant and PUFA treatment in experimental allergic encephalomyelitis, an animal model of MS, decreased the clinical signs of disease. Low-molecular-weight antioxidants may support cellular antioxidant defences in various ways, including radical scavenging, interfering with gene transcription, protein expression, enzyme activity and by metal chelation. PUFAs may not only exert immunosuppressive actions through their incorporation in immune cells but also may affect cell function within the CNS. Both dietary antioxidants and PUFAs have the potential to diminish disease symptoms by targeting specific pathomechanisms and supporting recovery in MS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Rheumatoid arthritis is a common inflammatory condition. A large number of patients seek alternative or complementary therapies of which diet is an important component. This article reviews the evidence for diet in rheumatoid arthritis along with the associated concept of oral tolerization. METHODS References were taken from Medline from 1966 to September 2004. The keywords, rheumatoid arthritis, diet, n-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and oral tolerization, were used. RESULTS Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) indicate that dietary supplementation with n-3 fatty acids provides modest symptomatic benefit in groups of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Epidemiological studies and RCTs show cardiovascular benefits in the broader population and patients with ischemic heart disease. A number of mechanisms through which n-3 fats may reduce inflammation have been identified. In a small number of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, other dietary manipulation such as fasting, vegan, and elimination diets may have some benefit. However, many of these diets are impractical or difficult to sustain long term. CONCLUSIONS Dietary manipulation provides a means by which patients can a regain a sense of control over their disease. Dietary n-3 supplementation is practical and can be easily achieved with encapsulated or, less expensively, bottled fish oil.

Abstract
Fish oils are the source of nutrients important for health maintenance. The most significant are essential fatty acids (EFA) of n-3 family, alkylglycerols and squalene. N-3 EFA are of great importance in atherosclerosis prevention. Alkylglycerols and squalene are modulators of immunity to infections and cancer. Shark liver oil contains great amounts of alkylglycerols and squalene, and moderate of n-3 EFA. Therefore, it is used as an adjunctive agent in cancer therapy, especially in radiotherapy, and in the treatment of infectious diseases.

Abstract
The dietary approach to allergic disease in infancy is evolving from passive allergen avoidance to active stimulation of the immature immune system, the aim of which is to support the establishment of tolerance. This may include probiotics providing maturational signals for the gut-associated lymphoid tissue and by balancing the generation of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines in addition to their capacity to reduce the dietary antigen load by degrading and modifying macromolecules. Probiotics have also been shown to reverse the increased intestinal permeability characteristic of children with food allergy and to enhance specific IgA responses frequently defective in children with food allergy. The promotion of gut barrier functions by probiotics also includes the normalization of the gut microecology, alterations in which have been demonstrated in allergic individuals. Dietary lipids, especially long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, regulate immune function and may modify the adherence of microbes in the mucosa thereby contributing to host-microbe interactions. The properties of specific dietary compounds in optimal combinations and the joint effects of nutrients can be exploited in the development of specific prophylactic and therapeutic interventions. To meet these targets, rigorous scientific effort is required to elucidate how the food matrix and the dietary content impacts on the complex cascade of interrelated immunological mechanisms in food allergy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare associations of lean fish vs fatty fish (tuna or other fish) intake with dementia, Alzheimer disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD) and in relation to APOE epsilon4 status in the Cardiovascular Health Cognition Study (CHCS). METHODS Fish intake was assessed by food frequency questionnaires. Incident dementia, AD, and VaD were determined through a series of cognitive tests, physician's assessment, and committee consensus. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to calculate hazard ratios of dementia, AD, and VaD with lean fried fish, fatty fish, or total fish intake, which were then stratified by the presence of APOE epsilon4. RESULTS Although consumption of lean fried fish had no protective effect, consumption of fatty fish more than twice per week was associated with a reduction in risk of dementia by 28% (95% CI: 0.51 to 1.02), and AD by 41% (95% CI: 0.36 to 0.95) in comparison to those who ate fish less than once per month. Stratification by APOE epsilon4 showed this effect to be selective to those without the epsilon4 allele. Adjustment by education and income attenuated the effect. CONCLUSION In the Cardiovascular Health Cognition Study, consumption of fatty fish was associated with a reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer disease for those without the APOE epsilon4 allele.

Abstract
Gesättigte Fette scheinen wesentlich zu Atherosklerose beizutragen, insbesondere der koronaren Herzkrankheit. Im Gegensatz dazu ist der schützende Effekt von einfach-ungesättigten Fettsäuren (Oleinsäure im Olivenöl) als Bestandteil der mediterranen Diät epidemiologisch sehr gut belegt. Wenn gesättigte Fette (tierischer Herkunft) teilweise durch Omega-6-Fettsäuren (Linolsäure) ersetzt werden, zeigt sich ein bescheidener Effekt auf die klinischen Manifestationen der koronaren Herzkrankheit. Dagegen haben Studien mit Zusatz von Omega-3-Fettsäuren in der Diät (Fischöl reich an Eicosapentaensäure, Dokosahexaensäure und Rapsöl reich an Linolensäure) eine signifikante Verminderung des plötzlichen kardialen Todes und der nicht fatalen Myokardinfarkte gezeigt. Omega-3-Fettsäuren haben eine direkte antiarrhythmische Wirkung auf die Myozyten. Die Reduktion der nicht fatalen Myokardinfarkte könnte mindestens teilweise auf eine die Thrombozytenaggregation hemmende und somit antithrombotische Wirkung und auf eine Stabilisation von unstabilen Plaques zurückgeführt werden.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Oral administration of 300 mg/l thioacetamide (TAA) for 4 months causes hepatic lesions comparable to those described in alcoholic liver cirrhosis in humans and associated protein-energy malnutrition. In this sense, direct supplementation with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and/or polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) might provide an advantage in the correction of the fatty acid deficiency in these patients. PUFAs are essential components of cell membranes maintaining its fluidity and function, important energy sources, and precursors of eicosanoids. Moreover, these fatty acids also modulate gene transcription, mRNA stability, and cellular differentiation. METHODS Fifty-four female Wistar rats (Interfauna Ibérica, Barcelona, Spain) weighing 110-120 g were used in this study. The animals were divided into two groups: one group was treated with 300 mg/l TAA dissolved in drinking water during 4 months, and the other group, which served as a control, was given water without TAA. To evaluate the changes induced by the administration of TAA for 4 months, TAA-treated (n = 7) and control animals (n = 5) were killed. Then, the TAA treatment was stopped and the rest of the animals in both TAA and control groups were divided into three experimental groups and three control groups which received for 2 weeks different type of diets. Using the TAA-induced liver cirrhosis model in rats, we analysed the effects of dietary supplementation with MUFAs and PUFAs on binuclearity and ultrastructure of hepatocytes. After TAA-induced cirrhosis, we analysed whether dietary supplementation with fatty acids may restore the normal percentage of binucleated cells, as well as the ultrastructure, nuclear area, and nuclear/cytoplasm index of hepatocytes. RESULTS Treatment with TAA causes cirrhosis characterized by the appearance of parenchyma nodules and fibrous septae, as well as qualitative and quantitative alterations in liver and plasma lipids. Our results indicate that dietary MUFAs support hepatocyte recovery regarding its ultrastructural and morphometric values. However, PUFAs-enriched diets (n-3 and n-3 + n-6) do not correct hepatomegaly, fibrosis or lipid accumulation. Thus, dietary PUFAs do not enhance hepatocyte recovery from morphological and ultrastructural alterations. CONCLUSIONS In our experimental model of cirrhosis, dietary supplementation with a high proportion of long-chain PUFAs (n-3 or n-6) negatively influences liver recovery. This negative effect was likely due to the increased susceptibility of cell membranes to lipid peroxidation, together with an alteration in lipid metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Unsaturated fatty acids are important constituents of neuronal cell membranes and have neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. OBJECTIVE To determine if a high intake of unsaturated fatty acids might be associated with a lower risk of Parkinson disease (PD). METHODS In the Rotterdam Study, a prospective population-based cohort study of people ages > or =55, the association between intake of unsaturated fatty acids and the risk of incident PD was evaluated among 5,289 subjects who were free of dementia and parkinsonism and underwent complete dietary assessment at baseline. PD was assessed through repeated in-person examination, and the cohort was continuously monitored by computer linkage to medical records. The data were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS After a mean follow-up of 6.0 years, 51 participants with incident PD were identified. Intakes of total fat, monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were significantly associated with a lower risk of PD, with an adjusted hazard ratio per SD increase of energy-adjusted intake of 0.69 (95% CI 0.52 to 0.91) for total fat, of 0.68 (95% CI 0.50 to 0.94) for MUFAs, and 0.66 (95% CI 0.46 to 0.96) for PUFAs. No associations were found for dietary saturated fat, cholesterol, or trans-fat. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that high intake of unsaturated fatty acids might protect against Parkinson disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Fruits of Momordica charantia L.-cucurbitaceae have been frequently used in folk medicine for rapid healing of cutaneous lesions and peptic ulcer, especially in Western Anatolia in Turkey. METHODS The anti-ulcerogenic effect of the oily extract of Momordica charantia fruits was investigated in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals were separated into six groups. Distilled water (control group), famotidine (40 mg/kg), oily extracts (5 and 10 ml/kg), and vehicles (olive oil -5 and 10 ml/kg) were given orally (gavage). Thirty minutes later indomethacin (25 mg/kg) was administrated to all the groups. Six hours later, animals were killed with decapitation. For each stomach, ulcerated and total areas were measured (mm2). The ulcer indexes for each stomach and the ulcer inhibition rates for each group were calculated, after which the stomachs were evaluated pathologically (polymorphonuclear leukocytes infiltration). RESULTS Ulcer inhibition rates were as follows: famotidine -91.54%, oily extract (5 ml/kg) -53.80%, oily extract (10 ml/kg) -98.04%, vehicle (olive oil -5 ml/kg) -18.40%, and vehicle (olive oil -10 ml/kg) -88.02%. According to polymorphonuclear leukocytes infiltration, oily extract (10 ml/kg) and vehicle (10 ml/kg) had similar effects to famotidine. CONCLUSIONS The olive oil extract of M. charantia fruit did show a protective effect macroscopically.
