Perceived value of partnerships between schools of pharmacy and health systems

INTRODUCTION

This study sought to quantify opinions of statewide health systems stakeholders regarding the value of partnerships with schools of pharmacy. Being better able to meet the needs of preceptors and their employers will allow schools to increase capacity of high-quality pharmacy practice experiences.

METHODS

A brief survey was developed and administered to statewide contacts from systems currently partnering with member schools of the North Carolina Experiential Education Consortium. Respondents were asked to rate, using a Likert scale, 15 incentive statements relating to potential benefits provided by schools in exchange for experiential rotations.

RESULTS

Forty-one responses were received from 53 invitees (77% response rate). The two most highly-valued incentives per survey respondents were continuing education (CE) accreditation by the school (74% essential), and access to school resources (74% essential). The lowest scoring incentives included system-wide committee involvement by faculty (26% essential), co-funded faculty positions (29% essential), and resident precepting by faculty (34% essential).

CONCLUSIONS

Incentive ratings differed significantly from previous reports describing value, which primarily focus on clinical interventions and cost savings provided by student pharmacists. Experiential staff at schools of pharmacy should consider a similar study to ascertain how best to meet the needs of their local partners and maximize commitments for pharmacy practice experiences.

Cultural Sensitivity and Global Pharmacy Engagement in the United States

Objective. To provide a resource for schools and colleges of pharmacy in different regions of the world that are considering sending their students and faculty members to the United States for training. Methods. A literature review (2000-2018) was conducted that involved database and Internet searches using specific keywords and terms. Information was also solicited from authors in different regions of the United States who have hosted international students and faculty members. Recommendations for pharmacists and other health care practitioners on culturally sensitive engagement were formulated. Results. Global engagement between schools and colleges of pharmacy from different regions of the world and the United States is increasing. In addition to various cultural aspects, general information about the US health care system, pharmacy education programs, and pharmacy practice were found to be available to individuals who are charged with organizing and facilitating these exchanges. Common stereotypes and misconceptions about the United States were also identified. Conclusion. For international learners to have an enriching and fruitful engagement while in the United States, an understanding of American culture in general as well as the unique cultural aspects of different regions of the country as provided in this paper is critical.

Cultural Sensitivity and Global Pharmacy Engagement in Asia: China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan

Interest in global engagement among schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States and Asian countries is growing. To develop fruitful relationships and engage in mutually enriching experiences, the cultural aspects of these countries need to be understood and respected. The aim of this paper is to facilitate culturally sensitive interactions between practitioners, faculty members, and students in the United States and those in Asian countries when they engage in health care practice and/or education. This paper introduces general information about China (including Macau and Hong Kong), Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Unique characteristics of the health care system and pharmacy education are described for each country. Stereotypes and misconceptions are discussed. Recommendations are included for initiating interactions and developing learning programs and scholarly collaborations while promoting culturally sensitive engagement. These recommendations are provided for US scholars, health care professionals, and students traveling to these countries as well as for those hosting visitors from these countries in the United States.

Cultural Sensitivity and Global Pharmacy Engagement in Asia: India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam

Schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States increasingly interact with those in Asian countries for various purposes such as education and research. For both those visiting and those hosting, it is important to understand and respect the culture of the other's country to enrich these interactions. This paper, the second of two manuscripts on Asian countries, focuses on India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Vietnam. For each country, the following information is provided: general introduction, health care system, pharmacy practice, and pharmacy education, stereotypes and misconceptions, recommendations for US-based health care professionals, faculty members, and students who visit these Asian countries, and recommendations for them to host visitors from these Asian countries. The aim of this paper is to assist US health care professionals, faculty members, and students in initiating and promoting a culturally sensitive engagement.

A semester-long critical thinking course in the first semester of pharmacy school: Impact on critical thinking skills

INTRODUCTION

To determine whether critical thinking improved after student-pharmacists participated in a semester-long critical thinking course in the first semester of pharmacy school.

METHODS

Students took the Health Sciences Reasoning Test-Numeracy (HSRT-N) on the first and last day of the course. The overall HSRT-N score, percentile ranking, and eight sub-categories within the HSRT-N (analysis, interpretation, inference, evaluation, explanation, induction, deduction, and numeracy) were evaluated. A multivariable quantile regression model evaluated the association between the post-test percentile and student age, at which campus the student was enrolled, and how many minutes the students required to take the test.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences in overall scores, percentile, or the sub-category scores with the exception of a significant increase in the analysis score and a significant decrease in the induction score. There was a greater increase for students in the lower quartiles on the pre-test compared to students in the higher quartiles on the pre-test. The largest percentile change occurred in students in the 25th-50th percentiles.

CONCLUSION

A statistically significant improvement in the analysis category of the HSRT-N and a greater increase for students in the lower quartiles on the pre-test to the post-test suggests students with the lowest quartiles on the HSRT-N would benefit the most from a critical thinking course.

Cultural Sensitivity and Global Pharmacy Engagement in the Arab World

Objective. To create a resource on cultural sensitivity for schools and colleges of pharmacy that are currently engaged or considering future outreach opportunities in the Arab world. Methods. A literature review (2000-2018) of databases and Internet searches with specific keywords and terms were conducted. Authors who had experience in travelling to and hosting students and professionals from the Arab world and authors with local work experience in the Arab world were solicited. Results. General information about the Arab world, including unique aspects of individual countries, is presented. Stereotypes and misconceptions regarding the region and the people are discussed. Specific information about the government and infrastructure of each country, including their health care system is provided, with emphasis given to pharmacy education and practice in the region. In addition, recommendations for culturally sensitive engagement for pharmacy and other health care practitioners are discussed. Finally, recommendations for culturally sensitive engagement when hosting students and/or faculty members from the Arab world are also addressed. Conclusion. Global engagement between schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States and those in the Arab world is increasing. For an enriching and fruitful engagement, sensitivity toward the cultural and clinical needs of the people, and in particular, the professionals of that region is critical.

Cultural Sensitivity and Global Pharmacy Engagement in Africa

Global engagement between schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States and Africa is increasing. For a balanced and fruitful engagement, sensitivity towards the cultural and clinical needs of the people and professionals of the African region is critical. In this paper, we have divided the discussion into Southern, East, Central, and West Africa. General information about Africa, with unique aspects for individual subregions and countries, will be introduced. Stereotypes and misconceptions about the region and the people will also be discussed, along with recommendations for culturally sensitive engagement for pharmacy and other health care practitioners when hosting members from, or visiting this region. The paper is a resource for schools and colleges of pharmacy who are currently engaged or considering future outreach opportunities in Africa.

An update on characteristics of dual PharmD/MBA programs in the United States: 2016-2017

INTRODUCTION

This study was conducted to update current literature on the characteristics of dual doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) and master of business administration (MBA) programs in the United States.

METHODS

After a preliminary search of institutions' websites for public information regarding PharmD/MBA programs, an email was sent to representatives of each school requesting additional promotional or program information that was not found online. After the data was collected and organized, an electronic survey was sent to each representative. Characteristics obtained include those related to program history, student and school demographics, enrollment requirements, and program structure.

RESULTS

Sixty-six schools of pharmacy were included in the study and asked to complete an electronic survey, and 36 (54%) programs responded. The oldest program was established 29 years ago, while most of the programs (43%) have been active for 11 to 20 years. Programs were similar in enrollment requirements, point of entry, and time to dual degree completion. Programs varied in the program structure, including how dual degrees are awarded.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides updated information about the characteristics of dual PharmD/MBA programs across the United States. This information may be useful to programs interested in developing or modifying existing dual programs and to students deciding whether to pursue a dual PharmD/MBA.

Cultural Sensitivity and Global Pharmacy Engagement in the Caribbean: Dominica, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and St. Kitts

Sustainable and reciprocal partnerships in pharmacy education and practice exist between schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States and Caribbean countries and territories. This paper discusses the cultural considerations for such partnerships to flourish. First, general information on Caribbean countries and territories is covered. Next, the paper transitions into how to ensure culturally sensitive engagements when traveling to or hosting visitors from the Caribbean. This paper is intended to assist practitioners with integrating culturally sensitive considerations into the development of partnerships in this region.

An Introduction to Cultural Sensitivity and Global Pharmacy Engagement

Global engagement between schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States and many regions of the world is increasing. For an enriching and fruitful interaction, sensitivity toward the cultural, ethical, educational, religious, historical, political, regulatory, and practice issues is critical. Lack of sensitivity may negatively impact engagement among students, professionals and other people from different regions of the world. In this special issue, eight papers will introduce general information about five regions of the world that have established and increased global engagements with institutions in the United States: Africa, the Arab world, Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America. In addition, the special issue will include a paper with key information related to global engagement within the United States. For each paper, the specifics provided about the selected countries include: demographics, culture, climate, pharmacy education, and health care systems, as well as common stereotypes and misconceptions held by and about the people of the country. Further, recommendations for pharmacists and other health care professionals on culturally sensitive engagement will be emphasized. Finally, recommendations for culturally sensitive engagement when US schools are hosting students and faculty members from those regions will be summarized. The papers are based on literature reviews of databases from 2000 to 2018 and internet searches with specific keywords or terms, such as cultural sensitivity, global, pharmacy, stereotypes, and ethics. Additional keywords are identified in individual papers on specific regions. Authors for each paper consist of practitioners with experience in travelling to and hosting students and professionals from the regions; practitioners with local work experience, and professionals from each region. The special issue is intended to serve as a resource for US schools and colleges of pharmacy currently engaged in or considering future outreach opportunities in these regions, and for those seeking opportunities in the United States. The special issue will provide key information to facilitate culturally sensitive engagement in existing or future relationships.

A comparative study of the depth, breadth, and perception of pharmacogenomics instruction in a subgroup of US pharmacy curricula

INTRODUCTION

This study was designed to assess the depth, breadth, and perception of pharmacogenomics education in pharmacy curricula in the United States (US).

METHODS

A modified, online questionnaire from previous studies was sent to all accredited US schools and colleges of pharmacy. The survey covered three distinct areas related to the schools' educational environments, the depth and the extent of pharmacogenomics core competencies and topics taught, and the institutions' perceptions of the importance of pharmacogenomics in the curriculum and future plans for expanded pharmacogenomics education. Multiple approaches were used to increase the response rate, and results were analyzed using descriptive statistics.

RESULTS

Of the 133 eligible programs, 32 participated in the survey. Six invalid surveys were excluded from our study, resulting in a 19.6% response rate. Results revealed that all responding schools included pharmacogenomics in the curriculum. Interestingly, 76.9% of the respondents believed pharmacists do not have the appropriate knowledge of pharmacogenomics. However, only 30.7% indicated that their programs planned to expand pharmacogenomics in their curriculum.

CONCLUSIONS

The responding schools all included some pharmacogenomics in their curriculum. However, the depth and the extent of pharmacogenomics topics covered varied. Respondents perceived that pharmacists today do not possess the appropriate level of pharmacogenomics knowledge. Despite this, there is limited emphasis on expanding pharmacogenomics instruction in the responding schools' curriculums.

Quality Assurance and Improvement Practices of Experiential Education Programs in Schools of Pharmacy

Objective. To identify common practices for measuring quality of experiential education (EE) programs at US schools and colleges of pharmacy. Methods. In-depth, semi-structured phone interviews were conducted with directors of experiential education or their equivalent, to identify elements of quality assurance (QA) processes for EE. To ensure representativeness from all fully accredited programs, purposeful sampling was used for participant solicitation and enrollment until both code and meaning saturation were reached. Participants were asked questions in six domain areas (preceptor and student performance, site quality, role of site visits, coursework, and achievement of learning outcomes). An iterative data coding and analysis process identified themes and notable practices within each domain area. Results. Interviews were conducted with representatives of 29 programs. All participants reported evaluating preceptor performance. Fewer participants identified a deliberate site assessment process, with most equating preceptor and site evaluation. Participants conducted site visits primarily to assess site quality and maintain relationships with preceptors. Few participants were able to provide details of a process used for evaluating experiential education coursework and student outcomes. All participants used student performance assessments to measure the quality of student performance. Overall, participants almost universally reported collecting data, less frequently described processes for data evaluation, and rarely shared outcomes arising from data collection and analysis. Conclusion. Themes and notable practices identified in this study provide initial benchmarks for QA programs for EE and will inform content and metrics of subsequent follow-up studies. A six-step process for QA for EE is proposed.

A Global Comparison of Internationalization Support Characteristics Available on College of Pharmacy Websites

Objective. To compare the information regarding entry-level pharmacy degree programs available on college websites worldwide from the perspective of international students. Methods. Data on pharmacy colleges and schools were extracted from the Official World List of Pharmacy Schools on the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) website. The website of each pharmacy college was accessed and the content was analyzed. A scoring method was created to compare the websites. Results. Of the 1839 pharmacy colleges listed worldwide, 246 had no website. Approximately half of pharmacy colleges with websites did not have a complete English version of their site. Academic information considered important by students, including the course syllabi, admission requirements, program costs, and a faculty directory, was not available on 73%, 44%, 65% and 43% of the websites, respectively. The websites of pharmacy colleges in Oceania, North America, and Europe provided the best information for international students, with these regions scoring an average of 9.2, 8.8, and 6.7, respectively out of 12 points. In comparison, pharmacy colleges in Central Asia and East and Southeast Asia scored an average of only 0.2 and 1.5 points, respectively. Conclusion. There are still a high proportion of global colleges of pharmacy without websites. Also, the quality of pharmacy colleges' websites is unevenly distributed around the world. To fulfill the information needs of international students, pharmacy colleges should provide an English version of the website and include at least a complete syllabus of all the courses, financial information (costs and grants), a complete faculty directory, and all the administrative requirements for application and enrollment.

National Survey Exploring Drug Screening in Pharmacy Programs

Objective. To explore drug screening programs, including requirements, policies, and procedures among pharmacy programs; frequency of drug-related incidents; and types of substances misused by pharmacy students. Methods. IRB-approved web-based and paper surveys were sent to pharmacy deans, experiential education faculty, and student affairs personnel at 135 US ACPE-accredited and candidate status programs. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used to analyze the data, identify relationships and draw conclusions. Results. Administrators from 98 programs responded (73% response rate). Sixty-one percent reported implementing a urine drug screen requirement for students, with a 10-panel screen as the most common required screen (72%). Ninety-three percent of programs require students to pay for the screen, with costs averaging $42 per screen. Programs reported an average of 2.2 substance-related events per 100 students annually, with alcohol, marijuana, amphetamines, opioids and benzodiazepines most commonly involved. Schools that do not screen reported twice as many incidents as those that screen. Conclusion. A drug screening program can deter pharmacy students from inappropriate substance use. The results from this study can assist pharmacy administrators in evaluating the need to institute or enhance a drug screening program at their school or college of pharmacy.

A Quantitative Analysis of the Quality of Pharmacy Education in Brazil

Objective. To compare the quality indicators of public and private pharmacy schools in Brazil. Method. Descriptive data regarding undergraduate pharmacy schools recorded as of April 2016 was obtained from the website of Brazil's Ministry of Education. The quality indicators analyzed included scores on the National Student Performance Examination, preliminary classification of the school, and final classification of the school. The schools were graded on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being excellent. Results. Four hundred sixty-seven Brazilian pharmacy schools were analyzed. The number of schools and class sizes has been increasing since 1832. The number of private pharmacy schools has increased since 1996, with the majority located in non-capital cities. The results showed an isomorphic characteristic of the quality indicators and a central tendency of the scores (score of 3), which are indicators of satisfactory quality. Most public institutions received a score of excellent. Conclusion. The analysis found an increase in the number of pharmacy schools in the private sector in Brazil and that the quality of public institutions was better than that of private institutions. Qualitative research should be carried out to complement the quantitative findings reported here.

Admission type is a paradoxical predictor of performance in problem-based learning courses

INTRODUCTION

To determine if a difference in problem-based learning (PBL) performance or student attrition exists based on admission type.

METHODS

This retrospective review analyzed admission type and student academic performance in the PBL course series from 2002 to 2009. Student scores were compiled based on admission type: provisional (high school), traditional with degree (bachelor's or higher), and traditional without degree (some college). ANOVA was performed on overall scores amongst the three admission types. Continuous data were analyzed using two-sided unpaired t-tests, and dichotomous data were analyzed using chi-square test.

RESULTS

600 students received at least one score in the third-year (P3) PBL course series. 56% of students (n = 333) were admitted traditional without degree, while the remainder were split between provisional (n = 125) and traditional with degree (n = 142) admission. Provisionally admitted students had significantly higher scores than either of the other groups (p < 0.001 for both) and significantly fewer students failed a course versus either of the other groups (p < 0.001 for both). Additionally, traditional without degree students had significantly higher averages and fewer failing grades compared to traditional with degree students (p < 0.01 for both) over the eight years analyzed.

CONCLUSIONS

This study's results suggest that degrees may not be predictive of success during PBL in the P3 year. Further work is needed in order to truly assess predictive nature of this and other factors among prospective pharmacy students.

Factors associated with cultures of assessment at US schools and colleges of pharmacy

INTRODUCTION

Pharmacy education has standards for assessment that must be met, prompting many programs to develop cultures of assessment. This study assesses the extent to which assessment personnel perceive that a culture of assessment has been established within their schools/colleges of pharmacy (S/COPs) and determines whether a relationship exists between assessment structure and the perceived strength of the culture of assessment.

METHODS

An electronic survey was administered to assessment personnel at 134 S/COPs. Respondents were asked about changes within the past five years pertaining to assessment personnel/committees and factors prompting these changes. They were also asked to rate items related to support for institutional assessment (SIA scale) and faculty engagement with assessment (FEA scale). The reliability of each scale was estimated using Cronbach alpha and bivariate correlations were conducted to estimate the relationships among the two scales and other survey items.

RESULTS

The S/COP response rate was 84% (113/134). Most (58%) noted the formation or re-structuring of the assessment office, with 26% creating one or more new assessment positions. The most common source of change was new accreditation standards (55%) followed by a new leadership position created in assessment (40%). Cronbach alpha for the SIA scale was 0.79 and 0.84 for the FEA scale. Program size was strongly negatively correlated with school age (r_s = -0.58) and the FEA scale (r = -0.21).

CONCLUSIONS

There was a strong relationship between SIA and FEA. Future studies are warranted to determine the interdependency of support for assessment and faculty engagement with assessment.

Teaching History of Pharmacy in U.S. Pharmacy Schools

Objective. To determine how the standards for teaching pharmacy history were met by U.S. pharmacy schools, whether schools wanted to expand their commitment to pharmacy history, what pedagogical assistance, if any, was desired, and whether elective courses were offered. Methods. There were 133 school deans who were asked to identify the responsible faculty for teaching pharmacy history. A 10-question online survey instrument was designed and emailed to these faculty or the dean if no faculty were identified. Follow-up emails were sent at 2-week intervals. If they were non-responsive after three attempts, then telephone solicitation was attempted. Results. There were 100 schools (75%) that responded. Fifty-three percent were public and 47% were private; with 50% having class sizes of 100 or less, 41% with 101-250, and 9% having over 250. Eighty-six percent of respondents meet the ACPE requirement within a required course. Seventy-two percent devote only one to five hours of instruction to meet the requirement. Sixty-eight percent use no supporting literature, and among those who do, there was no common textbook. Interestingly, 21% wanted more teaching time, and 91% desired pedagogical assistance, varying from a packaged course (26%) to a syllabus with assignments and assessment banks (23%). Conclusion. Since no time or material guidelines were established to fulfill the ACPE pharmacy history educational requirements, these results provide a starting point to judge what is adequate and/or preferred. With the development of teaching guidelines and adoptable teaching materials, the pedagogical solution to this ACPE standard may become more complete and consistent.

Surveying the current landscape of assessment structures and resources in US schools and colleges of pharmacy

INTRODUCTION

Expectations for assessment in higher education have increased in recent decades, prompting institutions to invest additional resources in this area. This study aimed to determine the resources, structure, and perception of assessment resources in United States schools and colleges of pharmacy (S/COPs).

METHODS

Assessment personnel in S/COPs were surveyed electronically. Information collected included S/COP demographics, composition of assessment positions, experience and training of assessment personnel, and structure and responsibilities of committees engaged in assessment. Respondents' perception of their S/COPs having sufficient assessment personnel, recent changes in assessment, and the factors that prompted assessment changes were also surveyed.

RESULTS

Respondents included individuals from 113 S/COPs (84% response rate). Most S/COPs had 1-2 assessment positions and 1-2 assessment-related committees. The most common assessment position titles were assistant/associate dean, director, coordinator/specialist, and administrative assistant. Dean-level administrators typically had worked in assessment the longest, whereas directors were more likely to have formal assessment training. Most respondents (75%) agreed they had sufficient assessment personnel to meet the 2007 Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Standards. Nearly two-thirds of respondents agreed they had sufficient personnel to meet the 2016 Standards and support their current assessment plan/process. Most S/COPs had a formal assessment committee (93%) and an average of two committees overseeing assessment.

CONCLUSION

Most S/COPs reported having sufficient resources to support assessment activities. Although there were some consistent themes, there does not appear to be a single model for structuring assessment resources or committees. Effectiveness of various assessment structures represents an area for future research.

Evaluating a measure of the research training environment in a sample of pharmacy residents

INTRODUCTION

While an important predictor of future research involvement, formal assessment of the quality of the research training environment in pharmacy residency training has not been examined. The objective of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of a modified version of the shortened form of the revised Research Training Environment Scale (RTES-R-S) in pharmacy residents.

METHODS

The original wording of the 18 items from RTES-R-S was modified to reflect pharmacy residency training. Data were collected as part of a larger study involving a random sample of pharmacy residents in the United States during the 2016-2017 residency year. Internal consistency was assessed with Cronbach's α. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to assess the fit of the factor structures examined previously during the original RTES-R-S development.

RESULTS

Based on confirmatory factor analysis, the preferred model proposed a single, second-order factor predicting nine factors reflecting Gelso's previously described ingredients of the research training environment. This model had acceptable fit indices and was statistically better than models without second-order factors. Cronbach's α for the global scale was 0.86, with the two subscales >0.7.

CONCLUSIONS

Minor rewording of an existing instrument to measure residents' perceptions of the quality of the research training environment demonstrated acceptable internal consistency. The factor structure of the recommended use proposed by the original developers of the RTES-R-S was supported in this sample of pharmacy residents. Continued work with additional samples is needed to generate additional validity evidence supporting the use of this tool in pharmacy residents.

Evaluation of medical marijuana topics in the PharmD curriculum: A national survey of schools and colleges of pharmacy

INTRODUCTION

To summarize the status of medical marijuana instruction in the PharmD curriculum and capture future plans for the incorporation of medical marijuana content.

METHODS

One hundred and forty United States schools and colleges of pharmacy were contacted to complete an anonymous survey regarding inclusion of medical marijuana topics in their curriculum, future plans for inclusion, and evaluation of perceived importance of specific topics.

RESULTS

Forty nine percent (68/140) of schools and colleges completed the survey and 62% (44/68) include medical marijuana content in their curriculum. Of the schools and colleges that do not include it, 23% (6/26) plan to incorporate medical marijuana topics within the next 12 months. In regards to perceived importance of specific topics related to medical marijuana, all topics received a median score of three on a scale of one to five, with one being of high importance.

CONCLUSION

With more states legalizing medical marijuana, schools and colleges of pharmacy need to evaluate inclusion of medical marijuana topics in their curriculum to prepare student pharmacists to effectively care for patients using this product.

Student perceptions of an experiential education clinic within a pharmacy school

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Pharmacy schools would benefit from new models of experiential education. The University of Saskatchewan (Canada) recently opened a patient care clinic called the Medication Assessment Centre (MAC) as new experiential education model. The purpose of this paper is to describe the structure and function of the MAC and to report program evaluation data.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY AND SETTING

The MAC is a unique application of an existing experiential education model in that it is an pharmacist-run ambulatory clinic (which is common) that is physically located on campus amongst the classrooms and supervised by pharmacy faculty (which is unique). Students are all required to participate in the clinic on a regular basis, in between lectures, throughout the four years of the pharmacy program.

FINDINGS

Students were invited to participate in one of five focus groups to assess the value of the experience. Transcripts were analyzed using thematic analysis, and the results identified strong satisfaction amongst students. The overall themes fell into three categories: (1) aspects that students liked, (2) aspects that students found challenging, and (3) positive impact on student learning. Previously published studies have found strong support for the MAC amongst patients and physicians.

SUMMARY

Students felt that a faculty supervised experiential education clinic that is physically located within their pharmacy school was a valuable learning experience. This paper provides a description of how the MAC has been integrated into an existing pharmacy curriculum, which may be valuable to schools contemplating a similar addition to existing experiential learning.

Grading trends and evaluation of student performance across advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPE) in the Big Ten Academic Alliance (The GRAPPES study)

INTRODUCTION

With over a third of the doctor of pharmacy curriculum relying on experiential education (EE), it is critical that students are assessed and graded in accordance with their actual performance. The objective of this paper is to review advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) grading across the Big Ten Academic Alliance to describe how APPE grading occurs at these institutions and highlight differences in approach and outcomes.

METHODS

Experiential directors/deans were asked to import de-identified data (e.g., APPE curriculum, midpoint and final evaluation score and grade, number of preceptors, number of students, number of years of pharmacy school, total hours of APPEs offered, number and duration of APPEs per year, grading scale information). A chi-square test including pairwise comparisons with a Bonferroni p-value adjustment for multiple comparisons was performed.

RESULTS

Seven college/schools submitted data from over 3600 students between 2012-2015. The distribution of letter grades differed significantly across all colleges/schools in 2012-2013, 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 (p < 0.0001). Similarly, the distribution of letter grades by rotation type varied significantly for all colleges/schools (p < 0.0001). Students in acute care, ambulatory care, and other patient care rotation types were less likely to obtain an "A" and more likely to obtain a "B" compared to students in other rotation types.

CONCLUSIONS

When letter grades are used for APPEs, the trend suggests over 95% of students receive an "A" or "B" grade. Final grades varied by rotation type with more "B" grades observed in patient care rotations than "A" grades over the three-year period.
