Biotechnology and the new right: neoconservatism's red menace

Although the neoconservative movement has come to dominate American conservatism, this movement has its origins in the old Marxist Left. Communists in their younger days, as the founders of neoconservatism, inverted Marxist doctrine by arguing that moral values and not economic forces were the primary movers of history. Yet the neoconservative critique of biotechnology still borrows heavily from Karl Marx and owes more to the German philosopher Martin Heidegger than to the Scottish philosopher and political economist Adam Smith. Loath to identify these sources--or perhaps unaware of them--neoconservatives do not acknowledge these intellectual underpinnings or their implications. Thus, in the final analysis, their critique is incoherent and even internally inconsistent. By not acknowledging and embracing their intellectual roots, neoconservatives are left with a deeply ambivalent and often confused view of biotechnology and the society that gives rise to it.

Anarchy, socialism and a Darwinian left

In A Darwinian left Peter Singer aims to reconcile Darwinian theory with left wing politics, using evolutionary game theory and in particular a model proposed by Robert Axelrod, which shows that cooperation can be an evolutionarily successful strategy. In this paper I will show that whilst Axelrod's model can give support to a kind of left wing politics, it is not the kind that Singer himself envisages. In fact, it is shown that there are insurmountable problems for the idea of increasing Axelrodian cooperation within a welfare state. My surprising conclusion will be that a Darwinian left worthy of the name would be anarchistic.

Gender, politics, and radioactivity research in interwar Vienna: the case of the Institute for Radium Research

This essay explores the significance of political and ideological context as well as experimental culture for the participation of women in radioactivity research. It argues that the politics of Red Vienna and the culture of radioactivity research specific to the Viennese setting encouraged exceptional gender politics within the Institute for Radium Research in the interwar years. The essay further attempts to provide an alternative approach to narratives that concentrate on personal dispositions and stereotypical images of women in science to explain the disproportionately large number of women in radioactivity research. Instead, the emphasis here is on the institutional context in which women involved themselves in radioactivity in interwar Vienna. This approach places greater importance on contingencies of time and place and highlights the significance of the cultural and political context in a historical study while at the same time shedding light on the interrelation between scientific practices and gender.

Employee and union inputs into occupational health and safety measures in Chinese factories

Few studies have addressed the impact of employees' inputs on the protection of their health and safety. The research presented in this paper focuses on Chinese factories and measures employees' evaluation of the effectiveness in OHS issues of their enterprise trade union and staff and workers' representative congress (SWRC). The data for the study draws upon a national survey of employees of enterprises in manufacturing industry conducted in 1997 by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. The study finds that the input of the trade union and SWRC does have a significant impact on the protection of the workers' occupational health and safety.

A culture of threat: right-wing extremism and negative identity formation in German youth

The specific case of Eastern Germany is illustrative of a more general framework for how identity formation, family processes, and humiliation, alienation, and deprivation are linked to local conditions or situational contexts.

Behavioral medicine in Hungary: past, present, and future

During the socialist period before 1989, training in behavioral medicine and behavioral science was not a priority in Hungary's medical schools despite the nation's long tradition of psychosomatic and behavioral medicine. In this article, the authors review the development of behavioral medicine and behavioral science in Hungarian medical schools and outline some of the problems and future challenges these departments face. The resistance of faculty members has influenced the acceptance of behavioral medicine and behavioral science courses, attitudes toward the acceptance of departments of behavioral science, and evaluations of the staff's scientific research. Although research is emphasized in these departments of behavioral medicine, closer integration of teaching, research, and health policy is necessary. The primary message of this approach is that modern physicians should see beyond molecular substances and perceive humans from a total biopsychosocial perspective.

Applied ethics in mental health in Cuba: part I--guiding concepts and values

As part of a project on professionals' lived experience of ethics, this article explores the guiding concepts and values concerning ethics of mental health professionals in Cuba. The data, obtained through individual interviews and focus groups with 28 professionals, indicate that Cubans conceptualize applied ethics in terms of its central role in professional practice and its connection to the social context and subjective processes. Findings also show that Cuban professionals are guided not only by a set of professional values but by a set of civic values as well. The former are subdivided into other-oriented values and self-oriented values. The study of ethics in another culture such as Cuba offers a unique point of view from which to critique the social construction of our own conceptions of applied ethics in North America.

Drugs in the postsocialist transitions of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland

The article discusses problems related to illicit drugs in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia against the background of the postsocialist transitions of the 1990s. Besides the drug problem, the political and market reforms of the 1990s were accompanied by a surfacing of a variety of social problems, some of which had already been present during the authoritarian socialist regimes. Gaining reliable and comparable statistics on drug-related harm has become very difficult due to changes in treatment system and health statistics. Nevertheless, all available evidence suggests that the use of illicit drugs has grown rapidly in all four countries, it now being close to the Western European level. As a result of international impulses rather than domestic interest, strictly restrictive drug policies have been adopted. Drug problems are aggravated by a marginalisation of a large part of the populations. Accordingly, their reduction may require a more general revision of the four countries' economic and social policies.

[Migration mobility and movement of the population]

"The functions of migration are reviewed from the viewpoint of the demographic situation in the USSR (by regions, sex, age, education, profession, labour and social activity, nationality, rural-urban, etc.). Some effects of migration on fertility are shown. The authors investigate the role of the economic functions of migration for the process of professional mobility. The territorial mobility of the population is analysed on a wider scale as a part of the social mobility in the socialist society.
