Abstract
Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant disorder that manifests as varying combinations of tumors of endocrine and other tissues (parathyroids, pancreatic islets, duodenal endocrine cells, the anterior pituitary and others). The MEN1 gene is on chromosome 11q13; it was recently identified by positional cloning. We previously reported 32 different germline mutations in 47 of the 50 familial MEN1 probands studied at the NIH. Eight different germline MEN1 mutations were encountered repeatedly in two or more apparently unrelated families. We analyzed the haplotypes of families with recurrent MEN1 mutations with seven polymorphic markers in the 11q13 region surrounding the MEN1 gene (from D11S1883 to D11S4908). Disease haplotypes were inferred from germline DNA and also from tumors with 11ql3 loss of heterozygosity. Two different disease haplotype cores were shared by apparently unrelated families for two mutations in exon 2 (five families with 416delC and six families with 512delC). These two repeat mutations were associated with the two founder effects that we reported in a prior haplotype analysis. The disease haplotypes for each of the other six repeat mutations (seen twice each) were discordant, suggesting independent origins of these recurrent mutations. Most of the MEN1 germline mutations including all of those recurring independently occur in regions of CpG/CpNpG, short DNA repeats or single nucleotide repeat motifs. In conclusion, recurring germline mutations account for about half of the mutations in North American MEN1 families. They result from either founder effects or independent occurrence of one mutation more than one time.

Abstract
To study the mechanism(s) of neuronal cell death during scrapie infection, we investigated the expression of Bax and Bcl-2 in brains of hamsters infected with 263K scrapie agent. The expression of Bcl-2 mRNA was significantly decreased in the brains of 263K scrapie-infected hamsters compared with controls, whereas the expression levels of Bax mRNA were significantly increased in scrapie-infected brain. The levels of Bax and Bcl-2 proteins in brains of scrapie and control animals reflected the difference in mRNA levels. Immunoreactivity for Bax and Bcl-2 were found predominantly within neurons. In scrapie-infected brains, the number of neuronal cells positive for Bcl-2 was significantly lower in the hippocampal CA3 region and was decreased in the cerebral cortex, whereas the number of neuronal cells positive for Bax was significantly increased in both regions. The possibility that differential regulation of Bax and Bcl-2 expression may play an important role in neuronal cell death induced by scrapie infection is discussed.

Abstract
Abeta derived from amyloid plaques of Alzheimer's disease-affected brain contain several oxidative posttranslational modifications. In this study we have characterized the amino acid content of human amyloid-derived Abeta and compared it with that of human synthetic Abeta subjected to metal-catalyzed oxidation. Human amyloid derived Abeta has an increased content of arginine (46%) and glutamate/glutamine residues (28%), but a decreased content of histidine residues (-32%) as compared to the expected amino acid content. Incubation of synthetic human Abeta with Cu(II), but not Fe(III), in the presence of H2O2 similarly induced a decrease in histidine residues (-79%), but also a decrease in tyrosine residues (-28%). Our results suggest that histidine and tyrosine are most vulnerable to metal mediated oxidative attack, consistent with our earlier findings that Cu coordinated via histidine residues is redox competent. Our results suggest that the loss of histidine residues in human amyloid-derived Abeta may be a result of Cu oxidation, and that unidentified post-translational mechanisms operate to modify other amino acids of Abeta in vivo.

Abstract
Human mucin genes include membrane-bound mucins (MUC1, MUC3, MUC4) and secretory mucins (MUC2, MUC5AC, MUC5B, MUC6). Our aim was to determine mucin gene expression in human gallbladder cell lines, normal gallbladder from liver donors (N = 7) and surgical specimens with mild chronic cholecystitis (N = 29), chronic cholecystitis (N = 48), and acute and chronic cholecystitis (N = 27). MUC1 mRNA was ubiquitous; however, only rare MUC1 immunoreactivity was detected. MUC3, MUC5AC, MUC5B, and MUC6 mRNA were present in all gallbladder specimens and cell lines examined. Prominent MUC3, MUC5AC, MUC5B, and MUC6 immunoreactivity was present in 86-100% of normal gallbladders. The frequency of MUC5AC reactivity was decreased in specimens with acute cholecystitis (P < 0.05). In contrast, MUC2-reactivity was absent in normal gallbladder and present in 53.8% of acute cholecystitis specimens (P < 0.05). Surface epithelium is characterized by MUC3, MUC5AC, and MUC5B, whereas deeper mucosal folds display MUC5B and MUC6 immunoreactivity. Gallbladder epithelium demonstrates a unique and diverse pattern of mucin core proteins that becomes altered with increasing degrees of inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular side effects of clozapine are not uncommon, but few systematic studies of these effects have been performed. In this study, we reviewed data on the electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities in patients treated with clozapine. METHOD Sixty-one patients treated with clozapine were selected from the Seoul National University Hospital Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia Clinic. A retrospective chart review was conducted to identify ECG abnormalities and cardiovascular side effects. RESULTS The prevalence of ECG abnormalities in patients who had been using antipsychotics other than clozapine was 13.6% at baseline, which increased significantly to 31.1% after commencement of clozapine treatment. Among the 53 patients without baseline ECG abnormalities, 13 showed new-onset ECG abnormalities after using clozapine. Normal ECG under previous antipsychotic medication reduced the risk of new-onset ECG abnormalities, whereas increased age was found to increase the risk. The occurrence of orthostatic hypotension or tachycardia was not related to the development of ECG abnormalities. Most of the newly developed abnormalities had little clinical significance, and they tended to occur during the initial phase of treatment. In 10 patients, ECGs normalized despite the continued use of clozapine. Clozapine increased corrected QT interval (QTc) in a dose-dependent fashion; however, the clinical significance of this observation is uncertain. Pathologic prolongation of QTc was found to be rare. CONCLUSION Although a substantial portion of patients treated with clozapine developed ECG abnormalities, most of the abnormalities were benign and did not hinder further treatment.

Abstract
Malonyl-CoA synthetase (MCS) has been previously purified and characterized from Bradyrhizobium japonicum USDA 110. The gene encoding this enzyme is now cloned, sequenced, and expressed in Escherichia coli. The enzyme contains 509 amino acid residues, with a calculated molecular mass of 55,239 Da. The recombinant enzyme was also purified from the transformed E. coli. The enzyme was essentially indistinguishable from the MCS of B. japonicum by the criteria of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and biochemical properties. Based on inhibitor studies of Rhizobium trifolii MCS reported previously and database analysis, Arg173, Lys175, His211, and Glu308 were selected for site-directed mutagenesis in order to identify amino acid residues essential for substrate binding and/or catalysis. Five different mutant enzymes (R173G, K175M, H211L, K175M/H211L, and E308Q) were prepared and then subjected to steady-state kinetic studies. The kinetic data measured for the mutants suggest that Lys175 and His211 participate in the formation of malonyl-AMP, whereas Glu308 may play a role in malonate binding.

Abstract
Pulmonary aspergillosis may be classified under three categories, depending upon whether the host is atopic or immunocompromised: invasive aspergillosis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) or aspergilloma. However, it is not always possible to effectively categorize this disease. We experienced a case of endobronchial aspergilloma, which was difficult to categorize, in a healthy male patient. The chest X-ray and computed tomography showed an ill-defined nodule mimicking lung cancer. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed an aspergilloma without cavity formation in the left lower laterobasal segmental bronchial orifice. The aspergilloma was removed and the patient's symptoms were relieved. We present this unusual case with a review of the literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The usefulness of K-ras mutation in pancreatic juice for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is questionable. Telomerase is positive in pancreatic cancer but rarely in benign pancreatic diseases. We conducted this study to determine the usefulness of K-ras mutation and telomerase activity in pancreatic juice for the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. METHODS Pancreatic juice collected during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography was examined in 31 patients: 12 with pancreatic cancer, 11 with chronic pancreatitis, and 8 control patients. The K-ras gene was detected by using the restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Telomerase activity was detected by using the telomeric repeat amplification protocol. RESULTS K-ras mutation was positive in 75% (9 of 12) of pancreatic cancers and in 27% (3 of 11) of cases of chronic pancreatitis but in none of the control patients. Telomerase activity was detected in 92% (11 of 12) of pancreatic cancers and in 18% (2 of 11) of cases of chronic pancreatitis. The diagnostic value in pancreatic cancer was comparable between K-ras mutation and telomerase when evaluated separately. However, by combining these 2 methods, the specificity rose to 100%. CONCLUSIONS For the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, telomerase activity in pancreatic juice may possibly be complementary to K-ras mutation because it may decrease the rate of false-positive diagnosis.

Abstract
Ygr203p, a 148-residue protein encoded by the ygr203w gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is a homologue of the yeast Acr2 arsenate reductase encoded by the acr2 (or ypr200c) gene. It also shows significant sequence similarity to the human cell-cycle control Cdc25 phosphatase family. It has been overexpressed in soluble form in Escherichia coli with a His(6) tag at its C-terminus. The recombinant protein has been crystallized at 296 K using sodium chloride as precipitant. The crystals belong to the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 40.48, b = 50.95, c = 91.95 A. The asymmetric unit contains a monomer, giving a crystal volume per protein mass (V(m)) of 2.61 A(3) Da(-1) and a solvent content of 53.8%. The crystals diffract to better than 1.9 A resolution with Cu Kalpha X-rays. They are therefore suitable for high-resolution structure determination.

Abstract
Although the mechanism of susceptibility to chronic persistent hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is not well clarified, immunogenetic factors of the host may have a role. Recently, a strong association between HLA-DR13 and the self-limited course of HBV infection has been reported. To determine whether the elimination of HBV is related to a particular HLA allele, we studied the HBV markers and HLA-DR phenotypes of 1,272 Koreans who had visited Yonsei University Medical Center for renal transplantation. They included 330 renal transplant donors. Subjects were categorized into 3 different groups: the "Unexposed Group" (UE; n = 946) with negative HBV markers, the "Chronic Carrier Group" (CC; n = 83), who were hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive, and the "Spontaneously Cleared Group" (SC; n = 243), who were HBsAg-negative with antibodies to HBsAg (anti-HBs) and hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc). HLA-DR4 was the most common type in all groups. HLA-DR6 was significantly more frequent in 69 of 243 subjects with SC (28. 4%) than in 8 of 83 subjects with CC (9.6%) (P <.001; relative risk [RR] = 3.72). HLA-DR9 was significantly more frequent in CC than in SC (P <.001; RR = 0.33). HLA-DR13 showed a stronger association with the clearance of HBV than the other HLA-DR6 subgroup. The distribution of HLA-DR phenotypes was similar regardless of renal disease. Our data indicate that HLA-DR6, especially HLA-DR13, is one of the host factors, which influences the immune response to HBV, and may be associated with self-elimination of HBV in Koreans.

Abstract
We report here three cases of Amanita virosa induced toxic hepatitis. Two of the three cases recovered but the other died 10 days after mushroom ingestion. Since the mortality of Amanita mushroom induced toxic hepatitis is very high, prompt diagnosis and aggressive therapeutic measures should be initiated as soon as possible. Our cases showed that the initial serum aminotransferase levels might not predict the clinical outcome of the patient, but that the prothrombin time (PT) seemed to be a more useful prognostic marker. Close monitoring of aminotransferase levels and PT as well as appropriate therapy are recommended. All three cases showed signs of proteinuria and we were able to characterize mixed tubular and glomerular type proteinuria at 3 or 4 days after ingestion in two cases. Among the previously reported Korean cases of suspected Amanita induced toxic hepatitis, most species could not be identified except for four cases of Amanita virosa. No cases of Amanita phalloides induced toxic hepatitis have been identified in Korea so far.

Abstract
In rat cortical astrocytes, we investigated the occurrence of cross-talks between purinoceptor and endothelin (ET) receptor, or glutamate receptor. The treatments of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), ET-1, and glutamate induced the increase of intracellular calcium level in the astrocytes. In repetitive additions of ATP to astrocytes, the second application of ATP exhibited comparable amplitude of calcium response, but the stimulation with ATP completely blocked subsequent ET-1- or glutamate-evoked calcium responses showing complete heterologous desensitization. In contrast, ET-1 and glutamate failed to desensitize the response elicited by ATP. Preincubation with sphingosine, a protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor, reversed the ATP-induced desensitization of ET-1- and glutamate-evoked calcium responses. Taken together, these results demonstrate the resistance of purinoceptor to homologous desensitization, and unidirectional desensitization between ATP and other receptors such as ET and glutamate receptors, suggesting a dominant role of purinoceptor in modulating calcium signal of astrocytes.

Abstract
It has been known that melanoma cells can suppress the immune system by the Fas ligand. The present study investigated whether interleukin (IL)-18, which can enhance Fas ligand expression, is produced by B16F10 melanoma cells and is involved in immune escape of tumor cells. Immunohistology, reverse transcription-PCR, intracellular fluorescence-activated cell-sorting analysis, and immunoblotting demonstrated that melanoma cells express IL-18. C57BL/6 splenocytes cultured with culture supernatants of B16F10 melanoma cells enhanced IFN-gamma production, which was blocked by anti-IL-18 antibody, indicating that IL-18 in the culture supernatants is functional. In addition to IL-18, the IL-18 receptor was also detected in B16F10 melanoma cells, suggesting a role of this cytokine in regulating the functions of B16F10 melanoma cells. The functional effect of IL-18 on B16F10 melanoma cells was shown by reduction of Fas ligand expression in cells treated with anti-IL-18 antibody or transfected with IL-18 antisense cDNA. In addition, the same treatments decreased intracellular reactive oxygen intermediate levels in B16F10 melanoma cells, indicating that IL-18 regulates reactive oxygen intermediate production, which is involved in Fas ligand expression. Furthermore, transfection of IL-18 antisense cDNA into melanoma cells increased the susceptibility of tumor cells to natural killer cells in vitro. When IL-18 antisense transfectants were implanted into syngeneic mice, severe reduction of tumor cell growth was observed with concomitant infiltrated natural killer cells in the tumor area. Taken together, these results demonstrate that IL-18 has a critical role as a survival factor for B16F10 melanoma cells.

Abstract
Amino acids are common constituents of floral nectars and can be critical components in the diets of insect pollinators. Yet the means through which insects detect amino acids can be complex and arise from pre- and post-ingestive mechanisms. Furthermore, the response to an amino acid can change depending on an insect's nutritional status. Here we use a sensitive feeding assay and Proboscis Extension Response (PER) conditioning in the honey bee to assay the effect of glycine, which is a common constituent of nectars and pollens. Subjects preferred to feed on a sucrose stimulus that contained glycine, and the highest relative preference was recorded for the highest concentration of glycine. However, the highest response rate occurred at lower than maximal concentrations and differed depending on the physiological status of the subjects. These results are consistent with a model in which subjects attempt to maintain a physiological target amount of glycine/amino acid relative to other nutrients. All concentrations of glycine enhanced the rate and magnitude of a conditioned response to an odor in the PER assay, which demonstrates that animals can learn to modify their responses to an odor conditioned stimulus based on the presence of amino acid. This capability would enhance a honey bee's ability to evaluate the quality of floral nectars, which are associated with, among other things, odor cues given off by flowers. In future studies these techniques will allow us to evaluate the physiological roles that amino acids play in honey bee diet and choice behavior.

Abstract
Local cytokine concentrations are required for inhibition of tumor growth with less toxic side-effects. However, genetically engineered tumor cells secreting cytokines still induce toxicity and activate bystander cells. To circumvent such problems, membrane-bound forms of IL-4 (IL-4m) were expressed on MethA fibrosarcoma tumor cells. Chimeric forms of IL-4 with the type I transmembrane protein CD4 or type II transmembrane protein TNF were designed to express IL-4 in opposite orientations on the tumor cell surface. The IL-4m on tumor clones was able to support cell growth of the IL-4 dependent cytotoxic cell line (CT.4S) and the Th2 cell clone (D10). Furthermore, the IL-4m tumor clones stimulated proliferation of 2C TCR transgenic spleen cells which are responsive to Ld MHC class I molecules. Expression of the IL-4/TNF chimeric protein on MethA cells elicited antitumor immunity and protected from MethA tumor challenge. The proposed tumor vaccine may serve as an effective gene therapy method to avoid the toxicity of recombinant cytokines and bulk bystander leukocyte stimulation encountered in conventional cytokine gene therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Fas ligand (FasL, CD95L) is a type II transmembrane protein of the tumor necrosis factor family that induces cells to send an apoptotic signal to cells expressing Fas (CD95, APO-1). It has been shown that cancers have a dysregulated expression of Fas and FasL system, conferring a survival advantage. It is important to understand FasL and Fas expression in tumors, because the growth of cancer might be controlled by Fas-mediated apoptosis. METHODS The expressions of FasL and Fas were studied by immunohistochemical analyses in 51 cases of renal cell carcinomas and the adjacent normal renal tissues, respectively. In addition, their expressions were compared with prognostic factors, such as tumor size, nuclear grade, TNM stage, and histologic types. RESULTS In nonneoplastic renal tissues, FasL was expressed in all nephron segments, whereas Fas also expressed in all tubules, except for glomeruli. In renal cell carcinomas, FasL protein was detected in 50 (98.0%) of 51 cases, whereas Fas expressed in 38 (74.5%) of 51 cases. In fact, the immunostaining of Fas was less intense than that in the adjacent normal segments of all cases. The staining pattern showing both high expression of FasL and low expression of Fas was found in 36 (70.6%) (P = .04) of 51 cases, most of which were Fuhrman grade 2 or 3 tumors. However, the expression pattern did not correlate statistically with the tumor size, histologic type, or clinical stage. On the other hand, most grade 4 tumors displayed high expression of both FasL and Fas (P<.001). CONCLUSION These data indicate that high expression of FasL and low expression of Fas protein in renal cell carcinomas may play a role in evading surveillance of the immune system. In addition, the FasL and Fas expressions appear to have a therapeutic implication for high-grade tumors rather than a prognostic one.

Abstract
It is shown that the Lorentz group is the natural language for two-beam interferometers if there are no decoherence effects. This aspect of the interferometer can be translated into six-parameter representations of the Lorentz group, as in the case of polarization optics where there are two orthogonal components of one light beam. It is shown that there are groups of transformations which leave the coherency or density matrix invariant, and this symmetry property is formulated within the framework of Wigner's little groups. An additional mathematical apparatus is needed for the transition from a pure state to an impure state. Decoherence matrices are constructed for this process, and their properties are studied in detail. Experimental tests of this symmetry property are possible.

Abstract
Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE) is a unique tumor, mainly of adults, which is characterized by epithelioid or histiocytoid endothelial cells. It is a low-grade malignant vascular tumor first described as a distinctive entity in 1982 by Weiss and Enzinger. An 8-year-old girl presented with an approximately 3-year history of an erythematous plaque on the left frontal area of the scalp. The diagnosis of EHE confined to the skin was made by clinicopathologic and radiologic evaluation. To our knowledge, there are only 5 reported cases of EHE with skin involvement, 2 of which showed concomitant systemic involvement, and all occurred in adults. Our case is the fourth reported case of EHE confined to the skin and the first to describe childhood onset of isolated cutaneous EHE.

Abstract
Caco-2 cells undergo differentiation to an enterocytic-like cell when maintained in a post-confluent state for 1-2 weeks. During this period Caco-2 cells begin to express high levels brush border membrane associated enzymes such as dipeptidyl peptidase IV. Using the dipeptidyl peptidase IV gene promoter in electrophoretic mobility shift assays, we have shown for the first time that levels of hepatocyte nuclear factor 1alpha increase three- to fourfold during Caco-2 cell differentiation. Transient cotransfection experiments with 3T3 cells using dipeptidyl peptidase IV promoter constructs and expression vectors containing hepatocyte nuclear factor 1alpha and beta show that the ratio of alpha and beta modulates reporter gene expression. These results suggest that the increase in levels of hepatocyte nuclear factor 1alpha that occur during intestinal cell differentiation, are important for expression of dipeptidyl peptidase IV and other intestinal proteins.

Abstract
7-Bromomethylbenz[a]anthracene is a known mutagen and carcinogen. The two major DNA adducts produced by this carcinogen, i.e., N2-(benz[a]anthracen-7-ylmethyl)-2'-deoxyguanosine (2, b[a]a2G) and N6-(benz[a]anthracen-7-ylmethyl)-2'-deoxyadenosine (4, b[a]a6A), as well as the simpler benzylated analogs, N2-benzyl-2'-deoxyguanosine (1, bn2G) and N6-benzyl-2'-deoxyadenosine (3, bn6A), were prepared by direct aralkylation of 2'-deoxyguanosine and 2'-deoxyadenosine. To determine the site-specific mutagenicity of these bulky exocyclic amino-substituted adducts, the suitably protected nucleosides were incorporated into 16-base oligodeoxyribonucleotides in place of a normal guanine or adenine residues which respectively are part of the ATG initiation codon for the lac Z' alpha-complementation gene by using an in situ activation approach and automated phosphite triester synthetic methods. The base composition and the incorporation of the bulky adducts into synthetic oligonucleotides were characterized after purification of the modified oligonucleotides by enzymatic digestion and HPLC analysis.

Abstract
Chondroitin sulfates proteoglycans were isolated from human placenta. For the identification of enzymatic digestion products of isolated proteoglycan, strong anion, exchange-high performance liquid chromatography (SAX-HPLC) was performed. By the action of chondroitin ABC and chondroitin B lyase, three unsaturated disaccharides 2-acetamide-2-deoxy-3-O-(beta-D-gluco-4-enepyranosyluronic acid)-D-galactose (deltaDi-OS), 2-acetamide-2-deoxy-3-O-(beta-D-gluco-4-enepyranosyluronic acid)-6-O-sulfo-D-galactose (deltaDi-6S) and 2-acetamide-2-deoxy-3-O-(beta-D-gluco-4-enepyranosyluronic acid)-4-O-sulfo-D-galactose (deltaDi-4S) were produced from the human placenta proteoglycan. The anticoagulant activity of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan was evaluated by activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) assay and thrombin time (TT) assay. The clotting times of aPTT and TT were increased from 72 to 144 sec and 19 to 27 sec, respectively. The immuno-modulating activity of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan was examined by cell proliferation assay and these results suggest that it may play a role in suppression of the function of immune-related cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The term trichrome vitiligo describes lesions that have a tan zone of varying width between normal and totally depigmented skin, which exhibits an intermediate hue. However, the pathogenesis and the histopathologic characteristics of trichrome vitiligo are unknown. OBJECTIVE Our purpose was to investigate the clinical and histopathologic characteristics and the pathogenesis of trichrome vitiligo. METHODS Four punch biopsy specimens were taken from 21 patients with trichrome vitiligo; they were from vitiliginous skin, light brown skin, perilesional normal skin, and normal skin as far as 5 cm from the nearest vitiligo spot. The sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin; in selected cases, we performed immunohistochemical staining with S-100 protein and CD1a. RESULTS Trichrome vitiligo occurred most frequently on the trunk in active vitiligo vulgaris. Focal vacuolar degeneration of the basal cell layer and mild inflammatory cell infiltration of the epidermis and dermis were more prominent in light brown skin and perilesional normal skin than in vitiliginous skin and normal skin. The number of melanocytes was decreased in light brown skin compared with perilesional normal skin (P <.05) and in vitiliginous skin compared with light brown skin (P <.05); a few melanocytes were observed even in skin affected by trichrome vitiligo. The number of Langerhans cells was increased in the epidermis of light brown skin and perilesional normal skin compared with vitiliginous and normal skin (P <.05). PUVA therapy yielded excellent repigmentation. CONCLUSION Trichrome vitiligo is a variant of active vitiligo. The changes of melanocytes, keratinocytes, and Langerhans cells may be involved in the pathogenesis of depigmentation in trichrome vitiligo.

Abstract
A distance learning nursing course is offered via two-way interactive video and the Internet from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to nursing students at Mie Prefecture College of Nursing in Japan. The course was designed to teach Japanese students nursing practices and issues in the United States. The classroom environment used a combination of synchronous (two-way interactive video connections over an Integrated Services Digital Network) and asynchronous technologies (electronic mail, Internet-based discussion forums, and World Wide Web pages). Students' course evaluations highlighted areas of success, and pointed out some of the challenges that remain for effective implementation of international education courses.
