Abstract
In recent years, bacterial cellulose (BC) has been fabricated in tubular shape as scaffold for vascular tissue engineering. However, in order to improve the blood compatibility and regenerative ability of BC, BC nano-fibres should be cross-linked with some materials which can prevent the formation of blood clot. In this work, a novel BC-chitosan (CS)/heparin (Hep) composite was prepared. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyse the obtained samples. It is observed by SEM and TEM that the obtained composites remain the three-dimensional (3D) network and porous structure. The results of XRD reveal that the curve of BC-CS/Hep composite assumes the characteristic absorption peaks of BC, CS and Hep. The FTIR results also confirm the presence of CS and Hep on the surface of BC nano-fibres. In conclusion, BC-CS/Hep composites were obtained by the co-synthesis technique and the cross-linking method, respectively. Furthermore, the MC3T3-E1 cells were seeded on the obtained samples to test the cell compatibility. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide results indicated that the BC-CS/Hep composites were suitable for cell proliferation and ingrowth.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Countermeasures are desirable to retard bone loss during long-term space flight. We evaluated the effect of an intervention protocol on bed rest-induced bone loss. INTRODUCTION We developed a resistive vibration exercise (RVE) platform to test if an intervention RVE protocol would be effective to protect bed rest-induced bone loss. METHODS Fourteen male subjects were assigned randomly to either the RVE group (n = 7) that performed daily supervised resistive vibration exercise or to the no any exercise control (CON) group (n = 7). Both dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and peripheral quantitative computed tomography were used to monitor changes in bone mineral density. RESULTS RVE significantly prevented bone loss at multiple skeletal sites, including calcaneus, distal tibia, hip, and lumbar spine (L2-L4). The ratio of urinary calcium and creatinine was found higher after starting bed rest in CON group while no significant changes were observed in RVE group. No significant temporal change was found for osteocalcin-N during and after bed rest in CON group. However, a significant increase was shown after bed rest in RVE group. In both groups, the urinary concentration of bone resorption markers, such as C-telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX-I) and deoxypyridinoline (DPD), were significantly elevated after bed rest. In the CON group, no significant temporal effect was found for hydroxyproline (HOP), CTX-I, and DPD during bed rest and the serum concentration of HOP and TGF-β significantly increased about 52.04% and 24.03%, respectively only after bed rest. However, all these markers tended to decrease in the RVE group. CONCLUSIONS Our results might imply that the intervention of RVE retarded bone loss induced by simulated microgravity in humans that was mainly attributed to its anabolic effects.

Abstract
A new approach of utilizing microwave to pattern gradient concentric silver nanoparticle ring structures has been presented. The width and height of a single ring and the space between adjacent rings can be adjusted by changing the silver colloidal concentration and the microwave output power. By simply enhancing the ambient vapour pressure to the saturated value during microwave-assisted evaporation, sub-100 nm rings can be deposited in between adjacent micro-rings over a distance of millimetres. Combined with microwave sintering, this approach can also create conductive silver tracks in a single step, showing huge potential in fabricating micro- and nano-electronic devices in an ultra-fast and cost-effective fashion.

Abstract
Testosterone (T) and vitamin D (VD) interact in androgen deficient men, however, this interaction and subsequent semen quality and bone mineral density (BMD) status is not clear in infertile men. Our objective was to investigate T, VD, semen quality, BMD and their relationships in Chinese infertile men. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 559 men aged 20-40 years, including 195 fertile men, 9 infertile men with known risk factors for osteoporosis (WR) and 355 infertile men without known risk factors for osteoporosis (WOR). WOR infertile men constituted 314 oligo-, astheno-, teratospermic or normospermic infertile men (OATN men) and 41 non-obstructive azoospermic men (NOA men). Differences of parameters were assessed, and the relationships were adjusted by multiple linear regression. WOR infertile men had significantly lower T, lumbar spine and total hip BMD than fertile men (all p < 0.05). Bioavailable T (Bio-T) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] were independent determinants of BMD in WOR infertile men (all p < 0.01) but not in fertile men. After stratifying Bio-T, WOR infertile men had lower BMD than fertile men (all p < 0.05) in low Bio-T subgroups (Bio-T ≤ 11.6 nmol/L), but not high Bio-T subgroups (Bio-T > 11.6 nmol/L). 25(OH)D was an independent determinant of sperm motility and morphology in WOR OATN men (all p < 0.05), with only borderline significance in fertile men(motility: p = 0.047; morphology: p = 0.056). T determined sperm concentration (square root) and morphology in WOR OATN men (all p < 0.001). No correlations between T and 25(OH)D were found in all groups. We suggest that infertile men have lower T and BMD than fertile men. 25(OH)D and T were associated with low BMD and poor semen quality in infertile men.

Abstract
In livestock, the ovarian reserve of follicles is established during the fetal stage. However, at least two-thirds of the oocytes present in the reserve die because of apoptosis before birth. Notably, mitochondria have been reported to play a crucial role in the fate (life/death) of oocytes. In this study, mitochondrial regulators nuclear respiratory factor-1 (NRF-1) and PPAR γ coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1α) were examined during this period of follicle development to investigate their effects on follicular development and apoptosis. Fetal and neonatal Capra haimen were used, ranging in age from 60 d postcoitum (dpc) to 30 d postpartum (dpp). Our data demonstrated that egg nests were the earliest recognizable gamete cells in ovaries of fetal and neonatal doelings. Proportions of egg nests decreased from 92.68 to 25.08% whereas single follicles increased from 7.32 to 74.92% between 60 and 120 dpc. Subsequently, between 90 and 120 dpc, the proportion of primordial follicles increased from 9.98 to 61.56% (P < 0.01). However, it did not change between 1 and 30 dpp (P = 0.12). The proportion of primary follicles increased from 1.23 to 37.93% between 90 dpc to 1 dpp (P = 0.01) but did not change between 1 and 30 dpp (P = 0.11). Meanwhile, proportions of secondary and tertiary follicles increased in an age-dependent manner. In addition, results of this study suggested that NRF-1 and PGC-1α proteins are mainly localized in germ cells of egg nests, cytoplasm of oocytes, and granulosa cells of follicles ranging from primordial to tertiary follicles. The transcript abundance of NRF-1 mRNA was up-regulated in 60-dpc-old ovaries compared with 1-dpp-old ovaries (P < 0.05), but the PGC-1α mRNA expression pattern did not change (P = 0.05). Nevertheless, the number of terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase UTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) positive cells and caspase-3 activity in 60-dpc-old ovaries was less than those in 1-dpp-old ovaries (P < 0.01, P = 0.01). In conclusion, our results demonstrate that the key stage of primordial follicle formation is between 90 and 120 dpc in Capra haimen. Also, this study suggests that NRF-1 and PGC-1α might have roles in cell apoptosis during ovarian development of fetal and neonatal Capra haimen. These results improve our understanding of apoptotic mechanisms in oogenesis and folliculogenesis.

Abstract
To study the common molecular mechanisms of various viruses infections that might result in congential cardiovascular diseases in perinatal period, changes in mRNA expression levels of ECV304 cells infected by rubella virus (RUBV), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) were analyzed using a microarray system representing 18,716 human genes. 99 genes were found to exhibit differential expression (80 up-regulated and 19 down-regulated). Biological process analysis showed that 33 signaling pathways including 22 genes were relevant significantly to RV, HCMV and HSV-II infections. Of these 33 biological processes, 28 belong to one-gene biological processes and 5 belong to multiple-gene biological processes. Gene annotation indicated that the 5 multiple-gene biological processes including regulation of cell growth, collagen fibril organization, mRNA transport, cell adhesion and regulation of cell shape, and seven down- or up-regulated genes [CRIM1 (cysteine rich transmembrane BMP regulator 1), WISP2 (WNT1 inducible signaling pathway protein 2), COL12A1 (collagen, type XII, alpha 1), COL11A2 (collagen, type XI, alpha 2), CNTN5 (contactin 5), DDR1 (discoidin domain receptor tyrosine kinase 1), VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor precursor)], are significantly correlated to RUBV, HCMV and HSV-2 infections in ECV304 cells. The results obtained in this study suggested the common molecular mechanisms of viruses infections that might result in congential cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Due to the fibrous shape and durability of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), concerns regarding their potential for producing environmental and human health risks, including carcinogenesis, have been raised. This study sought to investigate how previously identified lung cancer prognostic biomarkers and the related cancer signaling pathways are affected in the mouse lung following pharyngeal aspiration of well-dispersed MWCNT. A total of 63 identified lung cancer prognostic biomarker genes and major signaling biomarker genes were analyzed in mouse lungs (n=80) exposed to 0, 10, 20, 40, or 80μg of MWCNT by pharyngeal aspiration at 7 and 56days post-exposure using quantitative PCR assays. At 7 and 56days post-exposure, a set of 7 genes and a set of 11 genes, respectively, showed differential expression in the lungs of mice exposed to MWCNT vs. the control group. Additionally, these significant genes could separate the control group from the treated group over the time series in a hierarchical gene clustering analysis. Furthermore, 4 genes from these two sets of significant genes, coiled-coil domain containing-99 (Ccdc99), muscle segment homeobox gene-2 (Msx2), nitric oxide synthase-2 (Nos2), and wingless-type inhibitory factor-1 (Wif1), showed significant mRNA expression perturbations at both time points. It was also found that the expression changes of these 4 overlapping genes at 7days post-exposure were attenuated at 56days post-exposure. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) found that several carcinogenic-related signaling pathways and carcinogenesis itself were associated with both the 7 and 11 gene signatures. Taken together, this study identifies that MWCNT exposure affects a subset of lung cancer biomarkers in mouse lungs.

Abstract
The case of a female patient who failed to get pregnant due to delayed menstruation is reported. Gynecological examination showed that the patient had a male pubic distribution, hypertrophic clitoris, unobstructed vagina and hypertrophic cervices with smooth and medium texture. B ultrasonic examination detected a 42 x 30 mm in size medium echo mass. This mass had irregular shape, smooth surface, relatively clear boundary and hard texture. Examination with paraffin-embedded section indicated that the tumor was composed of supporting cells and to a lesser amount of interstitial components. Some regions had particle-like cell differentiation. These results suggested that the tumor was gynandroblastoma. We found that the increased level of serum testosterone in the patient was the reason for amenorrhea and infertility. The diagnosis and treatment for patients with gynandroblastoma is also discussed.

Abstract
In murine models, the adoptive transfer of CD4(+) /CD25(+) regulatory T cells (T(regs) ) inhibited graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). Previous work has indicated a critical role for the adhesion molecule L-selectin (CD62L) in the function of T(regs) in preventing GvHD. Here we examined the capacity of naive wild-type (WT), CD62L(-/-) and ex vivo expanded CD62L(Lo) T(regs) to inhibit acute GvHD. Surprisingly, we found that CD62L(-/-) T(regs) were potent suppressors of GvHD, whereas CD62L(Lo) T(regs) were unable to inhibit disease despite being functionally competent to suppress allo T cell responses in vitro. Concomitant with improved outcomes, WT and CD62L(-/-) T(regs) significantly reduced liver pathology and systemic pro-inflammatory cytokine production, although CD62L(-/-) T(regs) were less effective in reducing lung pathology. While accumulation of CD62L(-/-) T(regs) in GvHD target organs was equivalent to WT T(regs) , CD62L(-/-) T(regs) did not migrate as well as WT T(regs) to peripheral lymph nodes (PLNs) over the first 2 weeks posttransplantation. This work demonstrated that CD62L was dispensable for T(reg) -mediated protection from GvHD.

Abstract
Floodplain forests provide unique ecological structure and function, which are often degraded or lost when watershed hydrology is modified. Restoration of damaged ecosystems requires an understanding of surface water, groundwater, and vadose (unsaturated) zone hydrology in the floodplain. Soil moisture and porewater salinity are of particular importance for seed germination and seedling survival in systems affected by saltwater intrusion but are difficult to monitor and often overlooked. This study contributes to the understanding of floodplain hydrology in one of the last bald cypress [Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich.] floodplain swamps in southeast Florida. We investigated soil moisture and porewater salinity dynamics in the floodplain of the Loxahatchee River, where reduced freshwater flow has led to saltwater intrusion and a transition to salt-tolerant, mangrove-dominated communities. Twenty-four dielectric probes measuring soil moisture and porewater salinity every 30 min were installed along two transects-one in an upstream, freshwater location and one in a downstream tidal area. Complemented by surface water, groundwater, and meteorological data, these unique 4-yr datasets quantified the spatial variability and temporal dynamics of vadose zone hydrology. Results showed that soil moisture can be closely predicted based on river stage and topographic elevation (overall Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency = 0.83). Porewater salinity rarely exceeded tolerance thresholds (0.3125 S m(-1)) for bald cypress upstream but did so in some downstream areas. This provided an explanation for observed vegetation changes that both surface water and groundwater salinity failed to explain. The results offer a methodological and analytical framework for floodplain monitoring in locations where restoration success depends on vadose zone hydrology and provide relationships for evaluating proposed restoration and management scenarios for the Loxahatchee River.

Abstract
In 2009, prostate cancer ranked as the most common cancer and the second most fatal cancer in men in the United States. Unfortunately, the current clinical diagnostic methods (e.g. prostate-specific antigen (PSA), digital rectal examination, endorectal MRI, transrectal ultrasound, biopsy) used for detecting and staging prostate cancer are limited. It has been shown that cancerous prostate tissue has significantly different electrical properties when compared to benign tissues. Based on these electrical property findings, a transrectal electrical impedance tomography (TREIT) system is proposed as a novel prostate imaging modality. The TREIT system comprises an array of electrodes interfaced with a clinical transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) probe. We evaluate this imaging system through a series of phantom imaging experiments to assess the system's ability to image high and low contrast objects at various positions. We found that the TREIT system can easily discern high contrast inclusions of 1 cm in diameter at distances centered at two times the radius of the TREIT probe away from the probe surface. Furthermore, this technology's ability to detect low contrast inclusions suggests that it has the potential to successfully detect prostate cancer.

Abstract
Transrectal electrical impedance tomography (TREIT) has been proposed as an adjunct modality for enhancing standard clinical ultrasound (US) imaging of the prostate. The proposed TREIT probe has an array of electrodes adhered to the surface of a cylindrical US probe that is introduced inside of the imaging volume. Reconstructing TREIT images in the open-domain geometry established with this technique poses additional challenges to those encountered with closed-domain geometries, present in more conventional EIT systems, because of the rapidly decaying current densities at increasing distances from the probe surface. We developed a finite element method (FEM)-based dual-mesh reconstruction algorithm which employs an interpolation scheme for linking a fine forward mesh with a coarse grid of pixels, used for conductivity estimation. Simulation studies using the developed algorithm demonstrate the feasibility of imaging moderately contrasting inclusions at distances of three times the probe radius from the probe surface and at multiple angles about the probe's axis. The large, dense FEM meshes used here require significant computational effort. We have optimized our reconstruction algorithm with multi-core processing hardware and efficient parallelized computational software packages to achieve a speedup of 9.3 times when compared to a more traditional Matlab-based, single CPU solution. The simulation findings and computational optimization provide a state-of-the-art reconstruction platform for use in further evaluating transrectal electrical impedance tomography.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to systematically examine the proportion of accurate readings attained by automatic digital blood pressure (BP) devices in published validation studies. We included studies of automatic digital BP devices using recognized protocols. We summarized the data as mean and s.d. of differences between measured and observed BP, and proportion of measurements within 5 mm Hg. We included 79 articles (10 783 participants) reporting 113 studies from 22 different countries. Overall, 25/31 (81%), 37/41 (90%) and 34/35 (97%) devices passed the relevant protocols [BHS, AAMI and ESH international protocol (ESH-IP), respectively]. For devices that passed the BHS protocol, the proportion of measured values within 5 mm Hg of the observed value ranged from 60 to 86% (AAMI protocol 47–94% and ESH-IP 54–89%). The results for the same device varied significantly when a different protocol was used (Omron HEM-907 80% of readings were within 5 mm Hg using the AAMI protocol compared with 62% with the ESH-IP). Even devices with a mean difference of zero show high variation: a device with 74% of BP measurements within 5 mm Hg would require six further BP measurements to reduce variation to 95% of readings within 5 mm Hg. Current protocols for validating BP monitors give no guarantee of accuracy in clinical practice. Devices may pass even the most rigorous protocol with as few as 60% of readings within 5 mm Hg of the observed value. Multiple readings are essential to provide clinicians and patients with accurate information on which to base diagnostic and treatment decisions.

Abstract
In current clinical practice, the primary diagnostic method for testing for prostate cancer is ultrasound-guided biopsy. In this paper, we consider using a sonolucent array of electrodes, printed on a thin Kapton layer and positioned on the imaging window of a transrectal ultrasound probe, as a method for providing coregistered electrical and ultrasound imaging of the prostate. As the electrical properties of malignant tissues have been shown to differ significantly from benign tissues, the estimation of the electrical properties is expected to be helpful in distinguishing certain beginning pathologies from cancer and in improving the detection rate that current biopsy methods provide. One of the main difficulties in estimating electrical properties of tissues with this electrode configuration is the rapid decay of the sensitivity with distance from the sensing array. In order to partially overcome this difficulty, we propose to use prior information from the ultrasound (US). Specifically we intend to delineate the boundaries of the prostate from the US, to subdivide the organ into a small number of voxels and to estimate the conductivity as constant on each of these subvolumes. We use a 3D forward model based on the finite element method for studying the sensitivity of a simulated segmented prostate for three different electrode array designs. The three designs present different electrode areas and inter-electrode gaps. Larger electrodes are desirable as they present a better contact, but we show that as they result in smaller inter-electrode gaps, shunting currents can be significant and the sensitivity is reduced. Because our clinical measurement system employs a single current source, we consider tetrapolar measurement patterns for evaluating these electrode configurations. Optimal measurement patterns are well defined for adaptive systems, where multiple currents are injected at the same time. For the electrode array designs we consider, which are three dimensional, there are no established systematic methods for forming sets of linearly independent tetrapolar measurement patterns. We develop a novel method for automatically computing a full set of independent tetrapolar measurement patterns that maximizes the sensitivity in a region of interest (ROI). We use these patterns in the forward modeling and sensitivity studies. In addition to the electrode arrays on the probe, we study the use of a further configuration, where a distal electrode is positioned on the exterior of the body and used for current injection.

Abstract
We have investigated the therapeutic potential of a prototypic melanoma vaccine based on recombinant adenovirus expressing human dopachrome tautomerase in the B16F10 murine melanoma model. We found that in the presence of a tumor, the magnitude of T-cell immunity evoked by the vaccine was significantly reduced. This impairment was compounded by defects in cytokine production and degranulation within the tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). We showed that the combination of vaccination with high-dose cyclophosphamide was able to skew the response toward the target antigen and enhanced both the quantity and quality of antigen-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T-cell responses in tumor-bearing mice, which resulted in the inhibition of tumor growth. Furthermore, when tumor-specific antigens were targeted by the vaccine, the combination therapy could actually produce tumor regression, which appeared to result from the high frequency of antigen-specific T cells. These data show that recombinant adenovirus vaccines are compatible with conventional high-dose chemotherapy and that the combined treatment results in improved therapeutic outcomes relative to either agent individually.

Abstract
The spread of a virus--whether in a human population, computer network or cell-to-cell--is closely tied to the spatial (graph) topology of the interactions among the possible infectives. The authors study the problem of allocating limited control resources (e.g. quarantine or recovery resources) in these networks in a way that exploits the topological structure, so as to maximise the speed at which the virus is eliminated. For both multi-group and contact-network models for spread, these problems can be abstracted to a particular decentralised control problem for which the goal is to minimise the dominant eigenvalue of a system matrix. Explicit solutions to these problems are provided, using eigenvalue sensitivity ideas together with constrained optimisation methods employing Lagrange multipliers. The proposed design method shows that the optimal strategy is to allocate resources so as to equalise the propagation impact of each network component, as best as possible within the constraints on the resource. Finally, we show that this decentralised control approach can provide significant advantage over a homogeneous control strategy, in the context of a model for SARS transmission in Hong Kong.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) released from enterochromaffin cells influences intestinal homeostasis by altering gut physiology and is implicated in the pathophysiology of various gut disorders. The mechanisms regulating 5-HT production in the gut remain unclear. This study investigated the T helper (Th) 1/Th2-based immunoregulation of enterochromaffin cell function and 5-HT production in a model of enteric infection. METHODS AND RESULTS Trichuris muris-infected AKR (susceptible to infection and generates Th1 response), BALB/c (resistant to infection and generates Th2 response), Stat4-deficient (impaired in Th1 response) and Stat6-deficient (impaired in Th2 response) mice were investigated to assess enterochromaffin cells, 5-HT and cytokines. In association with the generation of a Th2 response we observed higher enterochromaffin cell numbers and 5-HT content in the colon of BALB/c mice compared with AKR mice. Numbers of enterochromaffin cells and amount of 5-HT were significantly lower in Stat6-deficient mice after infection compared with Stat4-deficient mice. In addition, enterochromaffin cell numbers and 5-HT content were significantly higher after reconstitution of severe combined immunodeficient mice with in-vitro polarised Th2 cells. CONCLUSION The study demonstrated that enterochromaffin cell and 5-HT responses to the same infectious agent are influenced by Th1 or Th2 cytokine predominance and suggests that the immunological profile of the inflammatory response is important in the regulation of enterochromaffin cell biology in the gut. In addition to new data on enterochromaffin cell function in enteric infection and inflammation, this study provides important information on the immuno-endocrine axis in the gut, which may ultimately lead to improved strategies against gut disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore a new predictor of renal flares after successful inductive treatment for diffuse proliferative glomerulonephritis(DPGN) in patients with lupus nephritis. METHODS A cohort of patents with SLE DPGN who were treated initially with prednisone and cyclophosphamide were studied. Those who responded to inductive treatment were followed up for the occurrence of renal flares. Urinary levels of RANTES, MCP-1 and M-CSF were measured by ELISA. Other clinical and laboratory data were collected. The predictors and outcome of renal flare were analyzed. RESULTS Seventy-three qualified patients with SLE DPGN were investigated. After a mean follow-up of 24.5 +/- 6.4 months, 22 patients experienced renal flares. The median time to relapse was 14.1 +/- 4.1 months. The patients experiencing renal flare showed higher urinary RANTES, MCP-1 and M-CSF. However, independent predictors of renal flares were increased urinary RANTES and M-CSF. Eight patents developed doubling of the serum creatinine (CRX2) level. The occurrence of renal flares was the only predictor of CRX2. CONCLUSIONS Persistently increased urinary levels of RANTES and M-CSF after initial remission are predictors of renal flare in patients with SLE DPGN. Our results indicate monitoring urinary pro-inflammatory factors may direct us in managing those patients.

Abstract
Clinoptilolite (a species of zeolite) as grower hog feed additive can potentially improve nutrient ingestion and lower manure nutrient levels. A first objective was to establish the optimal particle size of the zeolite powder, as a fine size increases the adsorption surface while a coarse size can facilitate handling. The second objective tested the effect of feeding zeolite on manure nutrient levels. For the first objective, three zeolite powders (250-500 microm; 50-250 microm, and 50-500 microm) were exposed to an NH(4)(+) solution under a pH of either 7.0 or 2.0. The resulting solutions were tested for cation exchange. A commercial zeolite was also tested for the pH of 2.0 to evaluate zeolite stability. At 0%, 5% and 10% humidity, the same three particle size powders were subjected to shear tests to determine the zeolite's angle of friction. For the second objective using metabolic cages, female hogs were subjected to one of four rations (a control and three with zeolite) while collecting and analyzing their manures. For the first objective, the coarse particle zeolite performed best, adsorbing 158 and 123 Cmol(+)/kg of NH(4)(+) under neutral and acid pH, respectively, and releasing an equivalent amount of minerals only under neutral pH. The commercial zeolite with less clinoptilolite released more Al, Fe, Cu and Pb, showing less stability. The high internal angle of friction of zeolite did not vary with particle size and moisture, indicating funnel flow under gravity. For the second objective, hogs fed a zeolite diet produced manure with 15% and 22% less N and P, respectively, and demonstrated a better feed conversion, although not statistically significant (P>0.05). These results show that there is some potential in using high quality clinoptilolite in the ration of grower hogs.

Abstract
10609 Background: Skp2 (S-phase kinase-associated protein 2) is substrate-recognizing subunit of an ubiquitin E3 ligase SCF (Skp1, Cullin and F-box) complex and has a major role in p27 regulation. Overexpression of Skp2 is frequently seen in human tumors, often correlating with poor prognosis. Anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C) is another most prominent ubiquitin E3 ligase in cell cycle control, and its function is tightly controlled by activating subunit Cdh1 (Fizzy-related). APC-Cdh1 complex is supposed to be involved in Skp2 proteolysis and have essential role for S phase entry, however clinical significance of Cdh1 have not evaluated yet. Herein we examined the significance of Cdh1 in breast cancer. Methods: Firstly, MCF7 human breast cancer cells and MCF10A normal breast epithelial cells were analyzed in vitro and in vivo. Thereafter, using tissue microarray, we evaluate the expression profile of Cdh1, Skp2 and p27 in both breast cancer and normal breast epithelial tissue. Moreover, clinicopathological significance (age, tumor size, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, histological grade, and stage) of Cdh1 was analyzed from 126 breast cancer patients. Chi square-test, Fisher's exact test were used for statistical analysis of immunostaining results and clinicopathological data. p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Overexpression of Cdh1 induced attenuation of Skp2 and increased p27 protein expression, resulted in growth suppression. Moreover, knockdown of Cdh1 promoted higher Skp2 expression and S-phase population, reduced p27 and consequently induced cell transformation and proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Tissue microarray results appeared that positive Cdh1 and p27 was more frequently seen in normal breast tissue and statistically significant. On the other hand, Skp2 was less in normal tissue. Furthermore, Cdh1 positive breast cancer was more frequently seen in low histological grade tumors and statistically significant (p=0.04). Conclusions: Skp2 protein expression is regulated by Cdh1 in breast cancer. Cdh1 expression could be possible novel biomarker in patient with breast cancer. Abstract
BACKGROUND IFN-alpha has been shown to be effective against hematologic malignancies. However, it is ineffective against most solid tumors and has not been satisfactory because of its toxicity. METHODS The NGR (Asn-Gly-Arg) peptide is a tumor-homing peptide. In order to increase the anti-tumor activity of IFN-alpha2a and lower the dose, we coupled a cyclic NGR peptide with the C terminus of IFN-alpha2a (named IFN-alpha2a-NGR). RESULTS The fusion protein was expressed in E. coli and purified by ion-exchange chromatography. The purity of IFN-alpha2a-NGR was >98% and the final purification yield of IFN-alpha2a-NGR was approximately 18 mg/L. The anti-tumor efficacy and the binding ability of IFN-alpha2a-NGR with tumor vasculature were investigated in vitro and in vivo. DISCUSSION Our study has demonstrated that the anti-tumor efficacy of IFN-alpha2a-NGR is significantly increased in comparison with IFN-alpha2a, and IFN-alpha2a-NGR could selectively target tumor vessels. These data indicate that the tumor-homing peptide (NGR) can enhance the therapeutic efficacy of IFN-alpha2a against tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Painful diabetic neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes and often resistant to treatment with standard analgesics. Treatment of diabetic neuropathy with antiepileptic drugs may provide pain relief. AIM To evaluate the long-term safety and tolerability of oxcarbazepine in two studies investigating the treatment of diabetic neuropathy. OBJECTIVES Patients with diabetes and a history of neuropathic pain were included. Study 1 was a multicenter, open-label study comprising a screening and 12-month treatment phase. Study 2 was a multicenter, open-label extension to a double-blind, randomized study. Oxcarbazepine was initiated at 300 mg/day and titrated over 4 weeks to tolerability or a maximum dose of 900 mg b.i.d. Safety was assessed by monitoring adverse events (AEs), serious AEs (SAEs), hematology, blood chemistry, urinalysis values, and vital signs. RESULTS Adverse events were most frequently reported in the nervous and gastrointestinal systems; 20.5% and 21.6% of patients withdrew because of AEs in study 1 and study 2, respectively. SAEs were reported in 13.7% and 14.4% of patients in study 1 and study 2, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Long-term treatment with oxcarbazepine is generally well tolerated in patients with painful diabetic neuropathy. Rapid titration of oxcarbazepine may be responsible for discontinuations resulting from AEs during early stages of treatment.

Abstract
Seasonality is often the major exogenous effect that must be compensated for or removed to discern trends in water quality. Our objective was to provide a methodological example of trend analysis using water quality data with seasonality. Selected water quality constituents from 1979 to 2004 at three monitoring stations in southern Florida were evaluated for seasonality. The seasonal patterns of flow-weighted and log-transformed concentrations were identified by applying side-by-side boxplots and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (p < 0.05). Seasonal and annual trends were determined by trend analysis (Seasonal Kendall or Tobit procedure) using the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Estimate TREND (ESTREND) program. Major water quality indicators (specific conductivity, turbidity, color, and chloride), except for turbidity at Station C24S49, exhibited significant seasonal patterns. Almost all nutrient species (NO(2)-N, NH(4)-N, total Kjeldahl N, PO(4)-P, and total P) had an identical seasonal pattern of concentrations significantly greater in the wet than in the dry season. Some water quality constituents were observed to exhibit significant annual or seasonal trends. In some cases, the overall annual trend was insignificant while opposing trends were present in different seasons. By evaluating seasonal trends separately from all data, constituents can be assessed providing a more accurate interpretation of water quality trends.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy and safety of oxcarbazepine (1200 mg/day) in patients with painful diabetic neuropathy in a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 16-week study. METHODS A total of 141 patients were randomized to oxcarbazepine (1200 mg/day) (n = 71) or placebo (n = 70). The primary efficacy variable was the change in mean visual analogue scale (VAS) score from baseline to the last week the patient participated in the study. RESULTS The reduction in mean VAS score from baseline to the last study week was similar between the oxcarbazepine and placebo groups. The majority of adverse events (most of which first occurred during titration) were mild to moderate in severity and resolved over the course of the study. CONCLUSIONS In this study, no statistically significant difference in therapeutic effect was observed between oxcarbazepine (1200 mg/day) and placebo. However, further studies are necessary to assess the effective dose range of oxcarbazepine in the treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate resting energy expenditure (REE) in surgical infants and define the effects of the degree of stress on its level. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Between June 1999 and June 2003 forty-five infants awaiting surgery (boys/girls: 32/13) from the Department of Pediatric Surgery were entered in the study. Indirect calorimetry was used to measure the REE of all the patients before operation and 1 - 7 days after operation. Clinical data were collected, including age, weight, height, diagnosis, operative method, site and duration, and first day postoperative C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. RESULTS The REE before operation did not differ significantly from the postoperative values (paired t-test, p > 0.05). The predicted REE was significantly higher than the measured REE even before and after the operation (p < 0.01). REE values in the first three postoperative days were lower in the mild stress group than in the severe surgical stress group. CONCLUSIONS REE variation among the patients is relatively large. Changes in REE may be related to the degree of stress. Predicted REE values may be not a good reflection of measured REE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the efficacy and safety of oxcarbazepine in patients with diabetic neuropathy in a multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-ranging 16-week study. METHODS A total of 347 patients were randomized to oxcarbazepine 600 mg/day (n = 83), 1,200 mg/day (n = 87), 1,800 mg/day (n = 88), or placebo (n = 89). The primary efficacy variable was change in mean visual analog scale (VAS) score from baseline to the last week of the study. RESULTS No difference between any oxcarbazepine group and the placebo group was noted for the primary efficacy variable. Both the 1,200- and 1,800-mg/day groups showed a trend toward statistical significance (P = 0.101, P = 0.096, respectively). Statistically significant differences were found between the oxcarbazepine 1,200-mg/day (P = 0.038) and 1,800-mg/day (P = 0.005) groups and placebo in the overall mean weekly VAS scores for the entire double-blind treatment phase. CONCLUSIONS Although the primary efficacy variable did not reach statistical significance, patients taking oxcarbazepine 1,200 and 1,800 mg/day showed improvements in VAS scores compared with placebo. Oxcarbazepine may provide clinically meaningful pain relief in patients with painful diabetic neuropathy.
