Abstract
We present a new mechanism that allows the stable existence of domain walls between oppositely traveling waves in pattern-forming systems far from onset. It involves a nonlinear mode coupling that results directly from the nonlinearities in the underlying momentum balance. Our work provides the first observation and explanation of such strongly nonlinearly driven domain walls that separate structured states by a phase generating or annihilating defect. Furthermore, the influence of a symmetry breaking externally imposed flow on the wave domains and the domain walls is studied. The results are obtained for vortex waves in the Taylor-Couette system by combining numerical simulations of the full Navier-Stokes equations and experimental measurements.

Abstract
The effect of an externally applied flow on symmetry degenerated waves propagating into opposite directions and standing waves that exchange stability with the traveling waves via mixed states is analyzed. Wave structures that consist of spiral vortices in the counter rotating Taylor-Couette system are investigated by full numerical simulations and explained quantitatively by amplitude equations containing quintic coupling terms. The latter are appropriate to describe the influence of inversion-symmetry-breaking perturbations on many oscillatory instabilities with O(2) symmetry.

Abstract

Abstract
HER2/neu overexpression is a driving force in the carcinogenesis of several human cancers. In breast cancer the prognostic influence of HER2/neu was shown to be at least partly based on increased metastatic potential mediated by the chemokine–chemokine receptor pair SDF-1(CXCL12)/CXCR4. We wanted to evaluate the influence of HER2/neu on ovarian cancer prognosis and to investigate whether compromised survival would correlate with CXCR4 expression and/or SDF-1 abundance. Therefore, we analysed HER2/neu, CXCR4, and SDF-1 in 148 ovarian tumour samples by means of immunohistochemistry on tissue microarrays. Overexpression of HER2/neu was found in 27.6% of ovarian cancer tissues and in 15% of ovarian borderline tumours. In ovarian cancer patients, overexpression of HER2/neu correlated closely with overall survival (univariate hazard ratio (HR) 2.59, P=0.005; multiple corrected HR 1.92, P=0.074). In contrast, CXCR4 expression and SDF-1 abundance had no impact on overall survival, and both parameters were not correlated with HER2/neu expression. As expected, cytoplasmic CXCR4 expression and SDF-1 abundance correlated closely (P<0.0001). Our results confirm a univariate influence of HER2/neu expression on overall survival, which was completely independent of the expression of CXCR4 and the abundance of SDF-1, implying significant differences between the HER2/neu downstream pathways in ovarian cancer compared with breast cancer.

Abstract
Only a few monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) have been isolated that recognize conserved sites in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) Env proteins and possess broad neutralizing activities. Other MAbs directed against targets in various domains of Env have been described that are strongly neutralizing, but they possess limited breadth. One such MAb, 2909, possesses a uniquely potent neutralizing activity specific for a quaternary epitope on SF162 Env that requires the presence of both the V2 and the V3 domains. We now show that replacement of the SF162 V3 sequence with consensus V3 sequences of multiple subtypes led to attenuated but still potent neutralization by 2909 and that the main determinants for the type specificity of 2909 reside in the V2 domain. A substitution at position 160 completely eliminated 2909 reactivity, and mutations at position 167 either attenuated or potentiated neutralization by this antibody. Different substitutions at the same positions in V2 were previously shown to introduce epitopes recognized by MAbs 10/76b and C108g and to allow potent neutralization by these MAbs. Two substitutions at key positions in the V2 domain of JR-FL Env also allowed potent expression of the 2909 epitope, and single substitutions in YU2 V2 were sufficient for expression of the 2909, C108g, and 10/76b epitopes. These results demonstrate that the minimal epitopes for 2909, C108g, and 10/76b differed from that of the clade B consensus sequence only at single positions and suggest that all three MAbs recognize distinct variants of a relatively conserved sequence in V2 that is a particularly sensitive mediator of HIV-1 neutralization.

Abstract

Abstract
Ovarian masses in children are an uncommon occurrence. They represent less than 2% of all tumours in girls less than 16 years of age. Mucinous tumours of the ovary occur principally in middle adult life and are extremely rare prior to menarche. To the best of our knowledge, there are only 13 previous cases of benign mucinous cystadenoma (MCA) of the ovary in perimenarchal girls reported in the literature. We present six cases of this rare tumour. We reviewed the charts of six patients who presented with large MCA of the ovary. The patient's ages ranged from 13 to 14 years (mean 13.6 years). Two were premenarchal and four were within 1 year of menarche. All children presented with marked abdominal distension and discomfort. Except for one child who had ultrasound scan alone, all the others had either CT or MRI scan as well. Ultrasound demonstrated a large multiloculated cystic mass arising from the pelvis reaching the level of the xiphoid. CT demonstrated an enormous mass occupying almost the entire abdomen. The mass was partly solid, partly cystic and the cystic elements were multiloculated in all patients. Three patients demonstrated contralateral hydronephrosis on imaging. Laparotomy revealed a tumour arising from the left ovary in five patients and from the right ovary in one. Several litres of fluid were aspirated in order to deliver the tumour from the abdomen. All patients underwent oophorectomy or salpingo-oophorectomy. Histology revealed benign MCA of the ovary in all cases. On follow up, ranging from 2.4 to 5 years, all patients were well with no evidence of recurrence. MCA in perimenarchal girls usually affects the left ovary. Although this tumour is rare, this diagnosis should be considered in 11 to 15-year-old girls presenting with a very large abdominal mass.

Abstract
Stability, bifurcation properties, and the spatiotemporal behavior of different nonlinear combination structures of spiral vortices in the counterrotating Taylor-Couette system are investigated by full numerical simulations and by coupled amplitude-equation approximations. Stable cross-spiral structures with continuously varying content of left- and right-spiral modes are found. They provide a stability transferring connection between the initially stable, axially counterpropagating wave states of pure spirals and the axially standing waves of so-called ribbons that become stable slightly farther away from the onset of vortex flow.

Abstract
Numerical calculations of vortex flows in Taylor-Couette systems with counter rotating cylinders are presented. The full, time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved with a combination of a finite difference and a Galerkin method. Annular gaps of radius ratio eta=0.5 and of several heights are simulated. They are closed by nonrotating lids that produce localized Ekman vortices in their vicinity and that prevent axial phase propagation of spiral vortices. The existence and spatiotemporal properties of rotating defects, modulated Ekman vortices, and the spiral vortex structures in the bulk are elucidated in quantitative detail.

Abstract
Samples of 10 and 14 Ctenocephalides felis felis fleas were collected on dogs from Pedreira and Mogi das Cruzes municipalities, respectively, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, for detection of Rickettsia spp. Individual fleas were submitted to Polymerase Chain Reaction targeting the 17-kDa and the 190-kDa (OmpA) genes of Rickettsiae. This later gene is specific for spotted fever group. Nine fleas from Pedreira (90%) and four fleas from Mogi das Cruzes (28%) were positive for the 17-kDa gene, and eight fleas from Pedreira (80%) and four from Mogi das Cruzes (28%) were positive for 190-kDa gene. The nucleotide sequence of the 190-kDa products of one flea from Pedreira and one flea from Mogi das Cruzes were 100% identical to each other, and when compared to the GenBank Data, they were 100% identical to the 190-kDa sequence of R. felis. This was the first report of its occurrence in the State of São Paulo.

Abstract
We present numerical simulations of vortices that appear via primary bifurcations out of the unstructured circular Couette flow in the Taylor-Couette system with counter rotating as well as with corotating cylinders. The full, time dependent Navier Stokes equations are solved with a combination of a finite difference and a Galerkin method for a fixed axial periodicity length of the vortex patterns and for a finite system of aspect ratio 12 with rigid nonrotating ends in a setup with radius ratio eta=0.5. Differences in structure, dynamics, symmetry properties, bifurcation, and stability behavior between spiral vortices with azimuthal wave numbers M=+/-1 and M=0 Taylor vortices are elucidated and compared in quantitative detail. Simulations in axially periodic systems and in finite systems with stationary rigid ends are compared with experimental spiral data. In a second part of the paper we determine how the above listed properties of the M=-1, 0, and 1 vortex structures are changed by an externally imposed axial through flow with Reynolds numbers in the range -40< or =Re< or =40. Among other things we investigate when left handed or right handed spirals or toroidally closed vortices are preferred.

Abstract
The prevalence of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in dogs in an urban area of the municipality of Monte Negro, Rondônia, Brazil, was evaluated using an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Blood samples were taken from 157 dogs living in 85 of the 94 blocks of the city. A seropositivity of 76.4% (120/157) was found and associations between the prevalence and the variables sex, age, type of raising and food were studied. The prevalence tended to increase with age (p < 0.05); dogs over 24 months old had 85.5% (100/117) positivity, compared with 50% (20/40) in dogs less than 24 months old, showing postnatal exposure to the agent. It was also observed that dogs with access to the streets showed greater prevalence (84.9%) than companion animals (58.8%). There was no association between sex or the type of food (home-made or commercial) and anti-T. gondii antibodies.

Abstract
Neospora caninum is an important cause of abortion in dairy cattle worldwide. Dogs are important in the epidemiology of this parasite because they are the only hosts known to excrete N. caninum oocysts. Antibodies to N. caninum were assayed in serum samples from 157 dogs from Monte Negro, Rondônia, Amazon, Brazil using the indirect fluorescent antibody test. Antibodies to N. caninum were found in 13 (8.3%) of dogs in titers of 1:50 in 1, 1:100 in 2, 1:200 in 5, 1:800 in 1, 1:1600 in 2, and 1:3200 in 2 dogs. These data indicate that N. caninum infection is prevalent even in remote areas of the Amazon.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Paraurethral or Skene's duct cysts are a rare congenital abnormality in the female neonate and are characterized by a round, yellow or orange-coloured cystic mass on either side of the urethra meatus. In the past 17 y we have treated six cases of paraurethral cysts in our unit. All patients underwent incision and unroofing of the cyst resulting in complete healing. The diagnosis and therapeutic options for this rare lesion are reviewed. CONCLUSION Paraurethral cysts are not as rare as suggested in the literature. Excision, marsupialization and needle aspiration of the cyst are all effective methods of treatment. However, spontaneous resolution has also been reported. It is suggested that the least aggressive therapy should be used.

Abstract
The influence of an axial through flow on the spatiotemporal growth behavior of different vortex structures in the Taylor-Couette system with radius ratio eta=0.5 is determined. The Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) linearized around the basic Couette-Poiseuille flow are solved numerically with a shooting method in a wide range of through flow strengths Re and different rates of co-rotating and counter-rotating cylinders for toroidally closed vortices with azimuthal wave number m=0 and for spiral vortex flow with m=+/-1. For each of these three different vortex varieties we have investigated (i) axially extended vortex structures, (ii) axially localized vortex pulses, and (iii) vortex fronts. The complex dispersion relations of the linearized NSE for vortex modes with the three different m are evaluated for real axial wave numbers for (i) and over the plane of complex axial wave numbers for (ii) and (iii). We have also determined the Ginzburg-Landau amplitude equation (GLE) approximation in order to analyze its predictions for the vortex structures (ii) and (iii). Critical bifurcation thresholds for extended vortex structures are evaluated. The boundaries between absolute and convective instability of the basic state for vortex pulses are determined with a saddle-point analysis of the dispersion relations. Fit parameters for power-law expansions of the boundaries up to Re4 are listed in two tables. Finally, the linearly selected front behavior of growing vortex structures is investigated using saddle-point analyses of the dispersion relations of NSE and GLE. For the two front intensity profiles (increasing in positive or negative axial direction) we have determined front velocities, axial growth rates, and the wave numbers and frequencies of the unfolding vortex patterns with azimuthal wave numbers m=0,+/-1, respectively.

Abstract
Metabolic Syndrome X is a clinical entity which comprises the following factors: diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, high levels of triglyceride and/or low levels of HDL cholesterol, central obesity and microalbuminuria (by WHO criteria). The first goal of this study was to determine the frequency of the Metabolic Syndrome X (MSX) in patients with acute myocardial infarction compared with the general population. The second goal of the study was to examine the frequency of heart failure and reinfarction rate in the patients with myocardial infarction, with and without MSX. Furthermore, the relationship between gender and MSX was analyzed. A total of 101 patients with acute myocardial infarction took part in randomized trial (32 women and 69 men). MSX and all of its components were diagnosed according to WHO criteria. To determine statistical significance of our results, we used chi2 test and t-test for independent samples. From 101 patient 48 had MSX (47.52%), while in the general population incidence of MSX is 3-4%. The reinfarction and the heart failure rate were significantly higher in the group of patients with MSX (p = 0.0067 and p = 0.0217, respectively). To conclude, the results of the present study confirm that MSX is a high risk factor for myocardial infarction and its complications.

Abstract
To evaluate the sex ratio of field collected nymphal Amblyomma cajennense ticks, we collected 5326 engorged nymphs from naturally infested horses in Pirassununga county and allowed them to molt to adults in the laboratory. They yielded a sex ratio of 1:1.83 (M:F). Three and two engorged females were collected from horses pastured at Pirassununga county and from tapirs pastured in Sorocaba county, respectively. These females were allowed to oviposit and their progeny were reared until the adult stage in the laboratory. Engorged females collected from Pirassununga yielded a sex ratio of 1:1.57 (M:F) and a sex ratio of 1.14:1 (M:F) were obtained for those ticks collected from tapirs. In addition, unfed tick larvae were collected from Pedreira county and reared in the laboratory until the adult stage. This collection yielded a sex ratio of 1.11:1 (M:F). These results showed significantly different (P<0.05) sex ratio constitutions among different tick populations. Laboratory rabbits were infested once with A. cajennense male ticks, which showed feeding periods varying from 7 to 86 days. During this period, the rabbits were re-infested regularly with A. cajennense female ticks. A total of 179 engorged females were collected from the rabbits and their engorged weight, feeding, preovioposition and egg incubation periods, weight of deposited eggs, percent of hatched eggs and egg production efficiency were compared to the male feeding period and to the number of live males present on the host. None of the female variables were affected by the male feeding period. Male ticks remained fertile for the whole feeding period. Percent of hatched eggs was the only female variable that significantly decreased as the number of live males decreased on the host. The results showed that although some A. cajennense populations are composed of more females than males after molting, this female predominance is compensated by a long male feeding period and maintenance of its reproductive performance.

Abstract
Although many human sera possess potent neutralizing activities for primary HIV-1 viruses, such activities are not efficiently induced by the current generation of vaccine candidates, and the epitopes mediating this neutralization are not known. The V3 loop of gp120 is believed to be the principal neutralization domain of laboratory-adapted viruses, but the importance of this region in neutralization of primary isolates is unclear. This question was explored using polyclonal anti-V3 antibodies purified by immunoaffinity methods from sera of HIV-1-infected patients. To include antibodies that might be directed against conformational and/or glycan-dependent epitopes not presented by synthetic peptides, the antibody isolations were performed with a fusion glycoprotein expressing the native V3 region of JR-CSF, a primary R5 isolate. V3-reactive antibody fractions from all eight sera examined showed potent neutralization of at least one of the three primary HIV-1 isolates tested; four of these antibody preparations neutralized all three primary viruses. For a number of serum-virus combinations 90% neutralization doses (ND(90)) between 1 and 5 microg/ml were obtained, and the most potent anti-V3 fraction had ND(50) values at or below 0.3 microg/ml for all three primary isolates. These neutralization activities against primary viruses were higher than those of potent monoclonal antibodies assayed in the same experiment. These data indicate that the V3 region can be an important neutralization target in primary isolates, and suggest that effective presentation of V3 epitopes in a vaccine formulation might induce protective humoral responses against natural infection by HIV-1.

Abstract
Ticks on 140 domestic dogs from both urban and rural areas of Franca region in São Paulo state were identified with 102 dogs from urban areas and 38 from rural areas. Of urban dogs, 27.5% were infested exclusively by Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks. Of the rural dogs, 36.8% were infested with the following tick species: R. sanguineus, Boophilus microplus, Amblyomma ovale and A. cajennense. Mixed infestations included a dog hosting A. cajennense and A. ovale and another with B. microplus and R. sanguineus. The most intense infestations were detected on urban dogs. Hemolymph tests of these ticks performed to detect rickettsial or Borrelia bacteria yielded negative results.

Abstract
Intravenous antiarrhythmic drugs can be used as diagnostic tools; for example, adenosine can be used to reveal the underlying rhythm in narrow QRS tachycardia. Newer class III antiarrhythmic agents, like ibutilide and dofetilide, are effective at the conversion of acute atrial fibrillation; however, electrical cardioversion is still the most effective method for restoration of sinus rhythm in persistent atrial fibrillation. Lidocaine and bretylium in the treatment and prevention of ventricular tachyarrhythmia are de-emphasized because of inefficacy, safety concerns (lidocaine), or shortage of drug (bretylium). Procainamide is effective for stable ventricular tachycardia, and amiodarone is effective in the treatment of shock-refractory ventricular fibrillation. Adrenergic blockade is likely important in the management of tachyarrhythmias, particularly in electrical storm, but more data will be necessary to establish its role.

Abstract
To determine the long-term outcome of congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM), the records of all patients with CCAM treated in three Hungarian paediatric surgical centers between 1977 and 1996 were reviewed. Patients were followed for up to 20 years following diagnosis and treatment. In 20 patients CCAM was diagnosed postnatally and in 3 prenatally. Biodata including the operative procedures are presented. Follow-up findings between 18 months and 20 years after diagnosis showed better height and weight growth in patients operated upon in later childhood compared with those operated upon in infancy. The older the patient at the time of diagnosis, the better was the long-term outcome.

The hypervariable domain of the murine leukemia virus surface protein tolerates large insertions and deletions, enabling development of a retroviral particle display system. J Virol 1999; 73:1802-8. Abstract
The surface proteins (SU) of murine type-C retroviruses have a central hypervariable domain devoid of cysteine and rich in proline. This 41-amino-acid region of Friend ecotropic murine leukemia virus SU was shown to be highly tolerant of insertions and deletions. Viruses in which either the N-terminal 30 amino acids or the C-terminal 22 amino acids of this region were replaced by the 7-amino-acid sequence ASAVAGA were fully infectious. Insertions of this 7-amino-acid sequence at the N terminus, center, and the C terminus of the hypervariable domain had little effect on envelope protein (Env) function, while this insertion at a position 10 amino acids following the N terminus partially destabilized the association between the SU and transmembrane subunits of Env. Large, complex domains (either a 252-amino-acid single-chain antibody binding domain [scFv] or a 96-amino-acid V1/V2 domain of HIV-1 SU containing eight N-linked glycosylation sites and two disulfides) did not interfere with Env function when inserted in the center or C-terminal portions of the hypervariable domain. The scFv domain inserted into the C-terminal region of the hypervariable domain was shown to mediate binding of antigen to viral particles, demonstrating that it folded into the active conformation and was displayed on the surface of the virion. Both positive and negative enrichment of virions expressing the V1/V2 sequence were achieved by using a monoclonal antibody specific for a conformational epitope presented by the inserted sequence. These results indicated that the hypervariable domain of Friend ecotropic SU does not contain any specific sequence or structure that is essential for Env function and demonstrated that insertions into this domain can be used to extend particle display methodologies to complex protein domains that require expression in eukaryotic cells for glycosylation and proper folding.
