Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the role of diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) in the regulation of feed intake in age-matched broiler and layer cockerels. In addition, the effect of genotype on endocrine functioning and key metabolites of the intermediary metabolism as well as on the expression of muscular uncoupling protein (avUCP) was explored. One-day-old male broiler (Ross) and layer (ISA Brown) chicks were reared under standard conditions on commercial broiler starter and finisher diets. From 22 d of age, twice per week, 3 broiler and 6 layer cockerels were placed in open circuit respiratory chambers. After adaptation, the animals were feed-deprived for 24 h, and heat production was measured by indirect calorimetry. During the subsequent 7-h refeeding period, feed intake and DIT were measured. Blood samples were taken after feed deprivation and re-feeding. Muscle samples were taken after refeeding for determination of avUCP expression. A significantly higher heat production per metabolic BW (MBW) in the layer compared with the broiler cockerels, independent of nutritional state, suggests that the broilers used a greater proportion of the metabolizable energy intake for growth. The DIT per MBW and per gram of feed intake was higher for the layer than for the broiler cockerels. However, feed intake per MBW was also significantly higher in the layer cockerels. Thus, no feedback effect of DIT on feed intake per MBW was observed, and the model formulated for adult mammals relating feed intake to DIT could not be corroborated. The muscular expression of avUCP was not different between genotypes, which does not support the hypothesis of an involvement of avUCP in the higher DIT measured in layer cockerels. Circulating uric acid, glucose, triglyceride, and free fatty acid levels were significantly elevated in the layer compared with the broiler cockerels. As the diet was formulated according to broiler requirements, the higher metabolite levels of the layer cockerels might reflect a relative oversupply of dietary nutrients.

Abstract
Day-old chicks are the endproduct of the hatchery industry and form important starting material for the broiler farms. The major objective is to obtain a high hatchability of marketable chicks and a low spread of hatch. For the farmers, these chicks have to perform well, which is translated in high viability, high growth rate, high breast meat yield, and low feed conversion. A good-quality 1-d-old chick is hence a crucial hinge between the hatchery and the broiler farm. Moreover, maximal hatchability is not always synonymous with maximal posthatch viability and growth potential of the chick. Quantitative and qualitative scoring of chick quality is assessed. We will briefly discuss some recently developed scoring systems, which will convert differences in qualitative parameters into a quantitative score. Preincubation factors such as egg storage duration and age of broiler breeders, as well as incubation conditions, affect day-old chick quality and subsequent broiler performance. Heat production and metabolism, hormonal balances of thyroid hormones and corticosterone, and gas exchange (O(2), CO(2)) are of fundamental importance for embryonic development and survival during incubation. Results from our studies indicated that embryos with higher pCO(2) levels in the air cell and higher triiodothyronine-thyroxine ratios at internal pipping or in the newly hatched chicks had higher hatchability, chick quality, and posthatch chick growth until 7 d of age. Incubation factors such as temperature, turning conditions, or gaseous environment also affect development, change concentrations of hormones related to metabolism and growth of the embryo, and in this way affect 1-d-old chick quality. Moreover, the spread of the hatch process is affected by incubation conditions as well as by the aforementioned preincubation factors. Depending on the spread of the hatching curve together with the place in the sequence of hatching (early or late) and in interaction with quality of the eggs set for incubation, storage duration, and age of breeders, there will be a period between hatch and first feeding of variable length. This may have repercussions on overall growth and many related physiological processes such as yolk uptake, metabolic level, and gastrointestinal development. In its turn, time of first feeding is related to some crucial hormone levels and enzyme activities for growth that are strongly influenced by posthatch food intake such as insulin and p70S6 kinase activity, a key enzyme in the control of protein synthesis. The magnitude of the effect of delayed feeding is dependent on the spread of hatching as well as on the hatching period within the hatching window. This may be related to the different intrinsic quality or characteristics of chicks, e.g., early vs. late hatchers, as is shown by their respective hormonal levels. The latter may be a causal factor for the actual hatching time within the hatching window as well as for the later intrinsic quality of the hatched chick, which is not reflected in any of the actual scoring systems for chick quality. This is largely ignored in previous studies and in hatchery practice so far.

Abstract
Commercial broiler chickens are exposed to a number of potential stressors prior to slaughter, including catching, crating, and transportation. To ameliorate animal welfare and prevent product quality loss during these processes, numerous scientific studies have been performed. As a result, different technical innovations have been presented such as mechanical catching instead of manual catching. The success of a catching machine as an alternative for manual catching of broilers will not only depend on its economic, animal, and human welfare benefits but also on its acceptance by society and consumers. The aim of this research was to assess if individuals' subjective perceptions of catching methods align with objective scientific facts. This research was focused on questions and issues related to the consumers' expected bottlenecks and motives for accepting these technologies after being exposed to video segments of each catching method. In general, the gap between consumer perception and scientific evidence related to manual and mechanical catching is limited. For those bottlenecks where science is inconclusive, respondents also have no explicit preference. Despite absence of major gaps between consumer perception and expert knowledge, preferences of particular consumer segments do not align well with scientific evidence. This holds in particular for female, younger, urban individuals who attach high importance to animal welfare issues.

Abstract
1. The objective of the present study was to examine whether the commonly applied duration of feed withdrawal (10 h) should be altered if broilers receive a commercial whole wheat (WW) diet instead of a completely pelleted (C) diet. 2. Inclusion of whole wheat in the diet did not affect weight gain, feed intake or feed conversion.3. The effect of different feed withdrawal (FW) durations on body weight loss was similar for both diets. 4. Gall bladder content was not significantly greater after longer feed withdrawal periods, irrespective of diet composition. Birds given the WW diet had significantly greater gall bladder contents than birds receiving the C diet. 5. Both diets had similar effects on wet weight of the total gut contents, mean relative wet contents of each gut region and percentage water content of the gut contents. 6. These results indicate that a feed withdrawal period of 10 h is sufficient for broilers on the WW diet.

Abstract
In this study we investigated the temporal relationship between ovulation, egg formation, oviposition and the changes in plasma concentrations of progesterone, luteinizing hormone and estradiol-17beta during the egg laying cycle in farmed ostriches. In 10 egg-producing birds, transcutaneous ultrasound scanning was performed at 3h intervals and blood sampling at hourly intervals during a period of at least 48h (one egg laying cycle). In hens (n=8) that ovulated during the observational period, the ovulated egg was first detected 2h after oviposition; thus, ovulation occurred shortly after oviposition in all birds. During the period between two consecutive ovipositions, the developing egg remained for 9h in the proximal part (infundibulum, magnum or isthmus) and for 39h in the distal part of the oviduct (uterus). In ovulating hens, plasma progesterone concentrations showed a characteristic and consistent profile: from basal levels of around 0.1ng/ml concentrations started to increase 12h before oviposition, reached an average maximum of 3.5ng/ml at 3h before oviposition and returned to basal levels 3h and 30min after oviposition. Changes in plasma luteinizing hormone and estradiol-17beta concentrations showed comparable patterns of elevation and decline relative to the timing of oviposition and ovulation. However, variation in their individual basal concentrations was generally larger and peak values were less conspicuous than those of progesterone. In non-ovulating hens (n=2) neither progesterone, nor luteinizing hormone nor estradiol-17beta showed elevations to peak concentrations before oviposition. These data demonstrate that during the egg laying cycle of ostriches, events such as ovulation, egg development and oviposition evolve according to a rather strict time schedule, and that progesterone, luteinizing hormone and estradiol-17beta reach peak concentrations shortly before ovulation. Additionally, our findings also show that on-farm ultrasound scanning is a useful technique to discriminate between ovulating and non-ovulating hens.

Abstract
Growing interest in ameliorating animal welfare has prompted numerous studies that compare various aspects of manual and mechanical catching. In general, mechanical catching has been adopted as a realistic alternative for manual catching. The success of a catching machine as an alternative for manual catching does not only depend on its practical applicability, but also on its acceptance by "the general public." In the history of technological change, public perception of new technologies has often been ambivalent. Against this background, it is important to know how consumers perceive the production methods. This paper provides an evaluation of the preferences for catching methods by "society" to investigate whether there is a shift in preference due to the confrontation with video segments and the potential effect of awareness and importance attached to animal welfare on preference. Data were gathered through a questionnaire-based survey, including 450 respondents, performed in Belgium. For this study, the data indicated that when subjects were provided information concerning catching methods of broilers, they liked the technology much more. However, for those respondents without prior awareness of both catching methods or with high importance attached to animal welfare, giving information could not convince them of the advantage of using a mechanical catching machine. It is obvious that preference varies with the awareness and experience of the respondents. Future research should move forward from simple assessments of consumer concerns about the technologies and focus more directly on questions and issues related to the consumer's expected bottlenecks of these technologies. In this way, working at a better understanding can directly influence the acceptance of these technologies.

Abstract
Pit-1 is a pituitary-specific POU-domain DNA binding factor, which binds to and trans-activates promoters of growth hormone- (GH), prolactin- (PRL) and thyroid stimulating hormone-beta- (TSHbeta) encoding genes. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) is located in the hypothalamus and stimulates TSH, GH and PRL release from the pituitary gland. In the present study, we successfully used the cell aggregate culture system for chicken pituitary cells to study the effect of TRH administration on the ggPit-l* (chicken Pit-1), GH and TSHbeta mRNA expression in vitro. In pituitary cell aggregates of 11-day-old male broiler chicks the ggPit-l * mRNA expression was significantly increased following TRH administration, indicating that the stimulatory effects of TRH on several pituitary hormones are mediated via its effect on the ggPit-l* gene expression. Therefore, a semiquantitative RT-PCR method was used to detect possible changes in GH and TSHbeta mRNA levels. TRH affected both the GH and TSHbeta mRNA levels. The results of this in vitro study reveal that ggPit-1 * has a role in mediating the stimulatory effects of TRH on pituitary hormones like GH and TSHbeta in the chicken pituitary.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether differences in susceptibility to colibacillosis are associated with maternal antibodies, antibody response, and alterations in thyroid hormones [triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4)] and to investigate the effect of genotype on the changes in T3 and T4 during challenge and antibody response. A challenge experiment was executed in 2 trials. Per trial, 24 chicks per genotype were challenged, and 20 chicks per genotype were controls. At 7 d of age, challenged chicks were intratracheally inoculated with 0.3 mL of Escherichia coli O78K80 and controls with 0.3 mL of PBS. All chicks were euthanized at 14 or 15 d. Thyroid hormone plasma concentrations and E. coli-specific antibody titers (AB) were measured at 7 d (T(3 d7), T(4 d7), and AB(d7)) and 14 or 15 d (change from 7 to 14 or 15 d was analyzed: DeltaT(3), DeltaT(4), and DeltaAB). Susceptibility was defined based on mortality, lesions, growth retardation, and eating behavior. There was a significant effect of challenge on T(3 d7); probably due to eating pattern in association with circadian rhythm. The challenge group was suggested to have functional hypothyroidism relative to the control group, indicating metabolic changes due to the challenge, and it was indicated that an antibody response was elicited. Differences in susceptibility were not significantly related to differences in T(3 d7), T(4 d7), DeltaT(3), or DeltaT(4) or to maternal antibodies (AB(d7)), but the antibody response tended to increase (decreasing DeltaAB) with increasing susceptibility. There were indications of genetic variation in T(4 d7), DeltaT(4), AB(d7), and DeltaAB, but there was no observed effect of genotype on DeltaT(3) and DeltaT(4) during challenge or on the antibody response. Further, there were indications that selection for growth traits has resulted in alterations in DeltaT(4) due to challenge, as indicated by a lower DeltaT(4) in the challenge group relative to the control group for more intensively selected genotypes as opposed to a higher DeltaT(4) for less intensively selected genotypes.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to investigate whether feed efficiency, as measured by residual feed intake as a phenotypic trait, affects energy partitioning in pullets that have received Salmonella inoculation as an immune challenge. In each of 8 trials, energy partitioning was measured during 5 wk in 15-wk-old efficient (R-) and nonefficient (R+) pullets, which were housed per efficiency group in 2 identical climate respiration chambers. After 1 wk of adaptation, the pullets in 4 trials were orally inoculated with 10(8) cfu of Salmonella enteritidis; pullets in the remaining trials were not inoculated and served as controls. Heat production was calculated from continuous recordings of O(2) consumption and CO(2) production. Energy and N partitioning were recorded on a weekly basis. Blood samples for analyses on thyroid hormones were taken at 16, 17, and 19 wk of age. There were no interactions between efficiency type and Salmonella treatment or Salmonella treatment effects in energy partitioning, except for a short-term increase in heat production in inoculated pullets. Nonefficient pullets had higher gross energy and ME intake, higher estimated ME for maintenance, lower ME:gross energy ratio, and higher total heat production and nonactivity-related heat production compared with R- pullets. Triiodothyronine levels in R+ pullets were higher at 16 and 17 wk but were lower at 19 wk of age compared with R- pullets. Thyroxine levels were higher in R- at 16 wk and showed interactions between efficiency type and Salmonella treatment at 17 and 19 wk of age. Body weights and spleen weights did not differ between efficiency groups. Nonefficient pullets had higher heart, liver, and ovary weights and more large yellow follicles than R- pullets. There were no Salmonella effects on body and organ weights. We conclude that R+ pullets have a faster running energy metabolism and that they put more resources into organ development than R- pullets. Inoculation with Salmonella has a short-term effect on nonactivity-related heat production but does not affect energy partitioning, regardless of efficiency type.

Abstract
We first tried to monitor the critical points for eggshell breakage in different logistic chains. Second, we examined whether there was a difference in eggshell strength among eggs produced in different housing systems. Finally, we developed a model to investigate the relation between eggshell strength and the likelihood of an egg cracking during handling and grading. Four logistic chains with different housing systems (battery cages, furnished cages, aviary, and free-range), all housing Bovans Goldline chickens in their mid-lay (45 wk), were compared. In every chain, a randomized set of 1,500 eggs was sampled, and the strength was defined. At every critical point in every logistic chain, the eggs were reexamined for breakage. The classic and furnished cage systems showed the highest percentage of breakage directly at point of lay (6.73 and 10.72%), whereas the other systems showed lower breakage (1.94% in the aviary and 1.99% in the free-range system). Further, in the logistic chain, grading and packing of the eggs generated the second highest percentage of breakage (from 1.50 to 2.65%). Breakage due to transportation ranged from 0.16 to 2.65%. There was a significant difference among the eggshell strength (shell stiffness and damping ratio) of eggs from chickens in different housing systems, showing eggs from chickens in the aviary system to be stronger than cage eggs (classic and furnished) and free-range eggs to be weaker than the other eggs. A significant correlation was found between eggshell strength and the likelihood of breakage in the production chains. In conclusion, it was first shown that, besides the laying, packing of the eggs is a critical point in the logistic chain of consumption eggs; second, the strength of the eggs in the different housing systems differed, and, finally, the eggshell stiffness and damping ratio of consumption eggs are an acceptable measure for rapid eggshell quality assessment and could provide a good predictive value for eggshell breakage in all types of table egg production chains.

Abstract
Based on an old paradigm that the extra-embryonic membranes develop semiautonomously from the embryo, it can also be postulated that subembryonic fluid (SEF) will be formed semiautonomously against embryonic growth, because the formation of SEF is mediated by the yolk sac membrane. In this study, we interfered in the development of SEF or the embryo. The acoustic resonance technique (which measures the resonant frequency of an excited egg) was used as a nondestructive tool to monitor the development of SEF. In the first experiment, in which the embryo was killed chemically with NaN3, it was proven that the formation of SEF continued, even when the embryo was killed after the initiation of the growth of the yolk sac membrane. In the second experiment, in which the development of SEF was inhibited chemically with amiloride, it was shown that the embryo developed further, although SEF formation was inhibited. In the last experiment, it was shown that the age of the flock affected the development of the embryo and the sudden decrease of the resonant frequency in a different way. However, some presetting conditions, such as storage, may affect both in a similar way. Our results further strengthen the idea that the formation of SEF develops semiautonomously against embryonic development by using the nondestructive acoustic resonance technique as an indirect method to monitor yolk sac membrane formation.

Abstract
Two replicate experiments were done to investigate if special diets provided to broilers in their last phase of life could reduce the negative effects of feed withdrawal and transport without an increased content of the digestive tract. In each experiment, 240 broilers were used. The experiments consisted of 2 interventions: the feed intervention and the transport intervention. The feed intervention took 72 h, in which broilers had full access to a conventional grower diet, a conventional grower diet with an increased carbohydrate level, a conventional grower diet with an increased fat level, a semisynthetic diet, or a semisynthetic diet with an increased carbohydrate level. The diets differed remarkably in carbohydrate content; carbohydrate content was approximately 67% in the semisynthetic diets and 42%, on average, in the conventional diets. Moreover, all of the carbohydrates in semisynthetic diets were highly soluble and digestible. The diets were compared with a feed withdrawal period of 24 h before transport. The transport intervention took 3 h; broilers were caught, crated, loaded, transported for 1.5 h, and had to wait in the crates for 1 h thereafter; or remained in the pens. After the transport intervention, blood samples were taken to determine plasma corticosterone, triiodothyronine, glucose, lactate, uric acid, nonesterified fatty acid, and triglyceride concentrations. Also, changes in live weight (LW) and digestive tract mass were assessed. The LW losses of broilers fed with semisynthetic diets after transport were 0.24% per hour less than of feed-withdrawn broilers. Moreover, intake of semisynthetic diets was approximately 200 g, whereas the intake of conventional diets was approximately 300 g. Therefore, the digestive tract mass as a percentage of LW was lower for semisynthetic-fed broilers in comparison with conventional-fed broilers, which can lead to a lesser degree of contamination during evisceration. No increase of corticosterone was found due to transport in semisynthetic-fed broilers. Semisynthetic feed with high carbohydrate concentration could be a good alternative for the feed withdrawal period held before transportation to the processing plant.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare and relate plasma hormone levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), progesterone (P4), estradiol (E2), and the in vitro P4 production capacity of the largest yellow (F1) follicle granulosa cells with the laying performance of 2 genotypes (a standard S line and a dwarf cross-experimental E line) maintained under ad libitum (SA, EA) or restricted (SR, ER) feeding regimens. Age-related hormone changes were determined from 4 to 50 wk, hormone changes during the ovulatory cycle were determined during lay, and changes in follicle granulosa cell P4-producing capacity in response to LH with or without growth factors were measured in vitro at different ages. The mean laying rate was similar for SR, EA, and ER but were lower for the SA. Plasma LH and FSH concentrations increased with age in all groups and peaked at puberty. Restricted feeding delayed puberty in both genotypes. Concentrations of E2 and P4 increased after puberty in all groups but delayed in restricted hens. Plasma levels of LH, FSH, P4, and E2 before and after puberty were not correlated with egg-laying performance, but peak E2 levels were. Luteinizing hormone and P4 concentrations during the ovulatory cycle showed differences that may be associated with the different laying performances of the 2 genotypes under ad libitum and restricted feeding. The increase in plasma LH concentration (from basal) during the preovulatory surge was higher in the SR than in the SA but was similar for EA, ER, and SA. The increase in P4 was also higher in SR than in the SA with no difference between EA and ER. In vitro P4 production by granulosa cells in response to LH with insulin-like growth factors, and bone morphogenetic protein-7 was different among the SA, SR, EA, and ER; the EA, SR, and ER had greater responses, and the SA had less response. The presence of insulin-like growth factors and bone morphogenetic protein-7 enhanced LH effects depending on the feeding regimen and age of hen. This finding suggests that differences in laying performances among genotypes fed at different nutritional levels may be partly due to differences in processes associated with follicular maturation modulated by gonadotropins and growth factors. It is concluded that the age at puberty is determined mainly by feed allowance, irrespective of genotype, and that differences in laying performance may be due to a combination of factors that include changes in the levels of gonadotropins or ovarian hormones and growth factors, BW, and the condition of the different genotypes under different feeding allowances.

Abstract
A gross postmortem investigation was done on 302 broilers that died between catching and slaughter to establish predisposing factors for dying in this period. Special attention was paid to heart disorders, which were established by determining the ratio of the right ventricle mass to the total ventricle mass (RV:TV) and to postmortem changes in hearts and lungs of broilers that were dead on arrival (DOA). Macroscopic pathologic lesions were found in 89.4% of DOA broilers. Signs of infectious diseases appeared to be most frequent (64.9%), followed by heart and circulation disorders (42.4%), and trauma (29.5%). The RV:TV was significantly higher for DOA broilers in comparison with slaughtered broilers. The prevalence of hearts with an abnormal RV:TV in DOA broilers was 34.4 vs. 4.1% in slaughtered broilers. The DOA broilers with an abnormal heart ratio more frequently showed ascites and hydropericardium. Postmortem changes in lungs depend on the position of the carcass the first several hours after death. Broilers, which remain in dorsal recumbency for several hours after death, develop engorged lungs. A good health status as well as more attention for the catching and crating process is crucial in decreasing the percentage of DOA broilers. Prevention of an increased heart ratio and of ascites will improve the livability in the broiler house and also decrease the DOA rate enormously.

Abstract
The main objectives of this study were to explore the role of diet-induced thermogenesis in the regulation of voluntary feed intake and to determine the glucose oxidation of broiler chicken strains, known to differ in glucose-insulin balance. From 2 to 7 wk of age, male broiler chickens of a fat and a lean line were reared on 1 of 2 isoenergetic diets with constant gross energy and carbohydrate levels but with substitutions between fat and protein. The low protein (LP/HF) diet contained 126 g of protein/kg and 106 g of fat/kg, whereas the low fat (LF/HP) diet contained 242 g of protein/kg and 43 g of fat/kg. There was no significant effect of the genetic background of the broilers on the glucose oxidation rate (as measured by stable isotope breath test) or protein oxidation (as measured by plasma uric acid levels). Considering the difference in carcass composition (fat content) of both lines, this leads to the hypothesis that the lines differ predominantly in fat metabolism. Although there was no line effect on plasma triglyceride and free fatty acid concentrations, it was hypothesized that there might be differences in fat oxidation or de novo lipogenesis, or both, between the genotypes. Diet-induced thermogenesis per metabolic body weight (kg of BW0.75) per 24 h, expressed per gram of feed intake, was not significantly influenced by genetic background or by diet composition. Therefore, a model linking feed intake to diet-induced thermogenesis, as postulated for adult mammals, could not be corroborated for growing broiler chickens.

Abstract
The effects of corticosterone (CORT) administration on the development of muscular tissues of broiler chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) fed with diets differing in lipid content were investigated. The experimental chickens were given one of two experimental diets: high lipid diet (9.9% crude fat) or control diet, from 21 d of age. At 28 d of age, half of the chickens in each dietary treatment were exposed to CORT treatment, supplemented with 30 mg CORT/kg diet for 12 days, while the other half continued to consume the former diet. The zootechnical parameters were recorded at 21, 28, 35 and 39 d, and a blood sample was obtained from 8 birds of each group, respectively. The growth performance of broiler chickens was significantly depressed by CORT administration, but not by dietary treatment. Corticosterone treatment resulted in enhanced energy expenditure. The results indicate that the development of breast muscle was more susceptible to stress mimicked by CORT administration. The results suggest that corticosterone administration enhanced hepatic fatty acid synthesis and resulted in the redistribution of energy to abdominal store from peripheral tissues. Diet rich in lipid content was favorable to the central fat deposit in stressed broiler chickens.

Abstract
Ghrelin injection, either centrally or peripherally strongly stimulates feeding in human and rodents. In contrast, centrally injected ghrelin inhibits food intake in neonatal chickens. No information is available about the mechanism and its relationship with energy homeostasis in chicken. Since ghrelin is predominantly produced in the stomach, we investigated the effect of peripherally injected ghrelin (1 nmol/100g body weight) on food intake and energy expenditure as measured in respiratory cells by indirect calorimetry for 24h in one-week-old chickens. Plasma glucose, triglycerides, free fatty acids, total protein and T(3) were measured in a separate experiment until 60 min after injection. Food intake decreased until at least 1h after intravenous ghrelin administration. The respiratory quotient (RQ) in ghrelin-injected chickens was reduced until 14 h after administration whereas plasma glucose and triglycerides concentrations were not altered. Free fatty acids and total protein levels also remained unchanged. Ghrelin did not influence heat production and this was supported by the absence of changes in plasma T(3) levels when compared to the control values. In conclusion, peripheral ghrelin reduces food intake as well as RQ and might influence the type of substrate (macronutrient) that is used as metabolic fuel.

Abstract
Ascites is a prevalent cardiovascular disease among modern broilers with negative impacts on production and animal welfare. The peak of mortality due to ascites occurs at the end of the growing period, but the etiology of this problem may start during embryonic development. A few recent reports have demonstrated that the signs of ascites susceptibility are manifested during the late stages of incubation. In the current study, we used a nondestructive method based on egg acoustic resonance parameters [resonant frequency (RF) and damping] to establish a relationship between embryo physiological events during early development in broiler eggs and susceptibility to ascites. The hatching eggs of 3 broiler lines differing in ascites susceptibility were used for this study: ascites-resistant dam line (DAR), ascites-sensitive dam line (DAS), and ascites-sensitive sire line (SASL). These lines were selected on the basis of fast growth, high breast meat yield, and ascites induction at low temperatures such that the order of ascites susceptibility in terms of mortality was SASL >> DAS > DAR. Eggs were incubated under standard conditions in forced-draft incubators. We measured egg weights at setting, albumen pH, Haugh units (HU) at setting, and embryo weights at d 11 and 18, at internal pipping (IP), and at hatch. The durations of IP, external pipping (EP), and hatching were also determined. At 2 hourly periods during incubation, egg RF and damping were also measured. There were differences in egg weights between DAR and SASL vs. DAS, but albumen HU, albumen pH, and the ratio of yolk weight to egg weight were similar. There were differences in RF, damping, embryonic growth rates, and hatching events. Changes in resonant frequency and damping, which certainly suggest eggshell differences among lines, were not totally related to variations in physiological events during early and late embryonic development. A comparison between DAR and DAS, between DAS and SASL, or DAR and SASL indicates that sensitivity to ascites and selection for rapid growth rate in ascites-sensitive lines have different effects on embryonic parameters. We concluded that the sensitivity of broiler breeders to ascites does not influence egg internal quality, but the occurrence of ascites sensitivity in broilers could not be reliably predicted by early in ovo acoustic resonance parameters and hatching events.

Abstract
Ascites is a metabolic disorder that accounts for over 25% of overall mortality in the broiler industry. This disorder is manifested between wk 5 and 6 posthatch, but there are previous indications that predisposition may be identified during embryonic development. In this current study, we determined embryonic physiological and metabolic parameters that may be associated with ascites predisposition. For this purpose, we used broiler eggs from 3 lines that differed in ascites sensitivity. These included an ascites-sensitive dam line (DAS), an ascites-resistant dam line (DAR), and an ascites-sensitive sire line (SASL). Eggs were incubated for 21 d under standard conditions. The following parameters were measured during incubation: egg weights at setting, egg weight losses at 18 d, embryo body weights and embryo heart weights throughout development, air cell partial gas pressures (pCO2 and pO2) levels at d 18 and at internal pipping (IP); plasma triiodothyronine, thyroxine, and corticosterone levels at d 18, IP, and hatch; heat production from d 17 until hatch, hematocrit values at hatch, and posthatch growth rate to 7 d along with hematocrit values. The data obtained revealed that selection for ascites sensitivity or rapid growth rate had no consistent influence on some of these parameters such that they could be wholly associated with ascites sensitivity for predictive purposes. Whereas differences in embryonic developmental patterns were apparent throughout embryonic development, these differences in physiological and metabolic parameters may be due partly to genetic differences unrelated to ascites sensitivity.

Abstract
Three trials were conducted to investigate the effect of RH (35, 60, and 85%) on thermoregulation of 1-wk-old broiler chickens at different temperatures (35, 30, and 25 degrees C). The response to humidity in rectal temperature and plumage temperature at the back and breast within 24 h after exposure were recorded at 5 time points (1,4,8,16, and 24 h). Humidity affected the thermoregulation of 1-wk-old broiler chickens by redistributing heat within the body at high, low, and thermoneutral temperatures. The redistribution of heat resulted in decreased rectal temperature and increased peripheral temperature, which were, respectively, beneficial and unfavorable at high and low temperatures. These results suggested that feedback effects of surface temperature on core temperature also exist in poultry, as already observed in mammals, and could be induced not only by changed ambient temperature but also by the changes in humidity at high temperature. The disturbance of thermal equilibrium could not be established solely by changes in RT, but rather core and surface temperatures had to be considered. The daily rhythms in rectal and surface temperatures were affected by humidity.

Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of RH (35, 60, and 85%) on thermoregulation of broiler chickens at high (35 degrees C) and mild (30 degrees C) temperatures at the age of 4 wk. The effects of humidity on rectal temperature (RT) and plumage temperature at back (PBAT) and skin temperature at breast (SBRT) were determined at 1, 4, 8, 16, and 24 h after exposure. The RT, PBAT, and SBRT were all significantly increased by high temperature (35 degrees C). Humidity had a significant influence on RT at 35 degrees C but not at 30 degrees C. The peripheral temperatures (PBAT and SBRT) were significantly affected by humidity but responded differently at high (35 degrees C) compared with mild temperature (30 degrees C). In conclusion, high humidity above 60% impaired the heat transmission from body core to the periphery at 35 degrees C but facilitated it at 30 degrees C in 4-wk-old broiler chickens. The effect of humidity on nonevaporative heat loss was depended on air temperature, as nonevaporative heat loss was suppressed by high humidity (>60% RH) at high temperature but enhanced at the mild temperature. The effect of humidity on the relationship between peripheral and core temperature depends on ambient temperature as well as on the age of the broiler chicken. The disturbance of thermal balance could not be determined only by changes in RT or peripheral temperature at a single time point but could be determined by mean body temperature within a certain time frame.

Abstract
Delay in access to feed for 1-d-old chicks impairs posthatch growth. It is a standard practice that 1-d-old chicks are deprived of feed for about 48 h before they are placed on farms. During incubation, there is a spread of 24 to 48 h for late versus early hatching. As spread of hatch increases, number of chicks that are feed-deprived for a longer time before free access (IA) to feed and water increases. In this current study, we investigated the effects of time delay in feed access on chick juvenile relative growth (RG: a measure of speed of growth) up to d 7, taking into consideration the duration of egg storage and spread of hatch. Our results confirmed that delay in feed access caused weight loss during holding time and depressed growth rate after access to feed. The magnitude of the effect depended on the hatching period within the hatching window. It also depended on whether the biological age (BA) or the chronological age (CA) of the chick was considered. Immediate access to feed produced significantly different results depending on CA or BA. Both ways, the method seemed to benefit the late hatchers. This finding contrasts with the effect of delayed feeding in which early hatchers benefited more. Long duration of egg storage depressed RG not only of chicks with immediate access to feed but also in those denied access after hatch. Delay in feed access significantly aggravated the effects of long egg storage duration on RG. Triiodothyronine levels were lower in feed-deprived chicks, and the effect was greater in late hatchers. It is concluded that the beginning of delay in feed access should be determined from the time of hatch not at the end of hatch. It is suggested that the adverse effects of delay in feed access can be reduced by providing a source of energy in hatching baskets or during transportation.

Abstract
Two experiments were completed to observe the combined effects of feed withdrawal and the catching and transport process on stress and energy metabolism. During one experiment 192 male broilers (46 d of age) were used, and in the other we used 240 male broilers (49 d of age). The experiments consisted of 2 interventions: feed intervention and transport intervention. The feed intervention took 10 h, in which broilers had full access to feed or feed was withdrawn and, thereafter, had a transport intervention that took 3 h, in which broilers were caught, crated, loaded, transported, and then had to wait in the crates for 1 h or remained in the pens. After the transport intervention, blood samples were taken to determine plasma corticosterone, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, glucose, lactate, uric acid, nonesterified fatty acid, and triglyceride concentrations. Changes in BW were also assessed. Broilers from which feed was withdrawn before the transport intervention showed higher thyroxine concentration and lower triiodothyronine, triglyceride, glucose, and lactate concentrations compared with broilers that had access to feed before the transport intervention. These findings indicate a negative energy balance and stress. Broilers that were transported after feed withdrawal had BW losses of approximately 0.42% per hour, which is approximately 0.30% per hour more than those that had full access to feed. To continue feeding broilers until catching resulted in higher BW at the slaughterhouse and less stress, as shown by a negative energy balance and might improve meat quality.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of dietary macronutrient ratio on postprandial (5 or 48 h after refeeding) endocrine functioning and metabolites of the intermediary metabolism and to relate these parameters with dietary-induced alterations in energy, protein, and lipid metabolism. Male broilers were reared from 1 to 7 wk of age on isoenergetic diets with substitutions between fat and protein but similar carbohydrate contents [low protein (LP): 126 vs. 242 g protein/ kg; low fat (LF): 43 vs. 106 g fat/kg]. The LP chickens had significantly increased postprandial plasma triglyceride levels. This was likely the result of stimulated hepatic lipogenesis, as corroborated by their significantly higher respiratory quotients. Plasma free fatty acid concentrations were higher in LP broilers, whereas glucose levels were unaffected by dietary composition, suggesting that these chickens preferred carbohydrates as an energy source over free fatty acids. Plasma uric acid levels were lower in LP compared with LF chickens, indicating a more efficient protein retention in the former group. LP birds that were fasted and refed at 48 h had higher plasma 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) levels, corroborating their increased heat production. The postprandial T3 increase was more pronounced in the LF chickens, possibly induced by their higher protein consumption. In conclusion, diet-induced changes in heat production and energy partitioning are reflected in circulating levels of intermediary metabolites and hormones.
