Abstract
CONTEXT The ability to effectively communicate through posters and podium presentations using appropriate visual content and style is essential for health care educators. OBJECTIVES To offer suggestions for more effective visual elements of posters and podium presentations. METHODS We present the experiences of our multidisciplinary publishing group, whose combined experiences and collaboration have provided us with an understanding of what works and how to achieve success when working on presentations and posters. Many others would offer similar advice, as these guidelines are consistent with effective presentation. FINDINGS/SUGGESTIONS: Certain visual elements should be attended to in any visual presentation: consistency, alignment, contrast and repetition. Presentations should be consistent in font size and type, line spacing, alignment of graphics and text, and size of graphics. All elements should be aligned with at least one other element. Contrasting light background with dark text (and vice versa) helps an audience read the text more easily. Standardized formatting lets viewers know when they are looking at similar things (tables, headings, etc.). Using a minimal number of colors (four at most) helps the audience more easily read text. For podium presentations, have one slide for each minute allotted for speaking. The speaker is also a visual element; one should not allow the audience's view of either the presentation or presenter to be blocked. Making eye contact with the audience also keeps them visually engaged. CONCLUSIONS Health care educators often share information through posters and podium presentations. These tips should help the visual elements of presentations be more effective.

Abstract
The large number of individuals in Scotland who became infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the 1970s and 1980s leads us to expect liver-related morbidity and mortality to increase in the coming years. We investigated the contribution of HCV to liver-related mortality in the period January 1991 to June 2006. The study population consisted of 26,861 individuals whose death record mentioned a liver-related cause (underlying or contributing). Record-linkage to the national HCV Diagnosis database supplied HCV-diagnosed status for the study population. The proportion diagnosed with HCV among people dying from a liver-related cause rose from 2.8% (1995-1997) to 4.4% (2004-June 2006); the largest increase occurred in those aged 35-44 years at death (7% to 17%). Among all deaths from a liver-related cause, an HCV-positive diagnosis was more likely in those who died in 2001 or later than those who died in 1995-1997 (2001-2003: odds ratio=1.4, 95% confidence interval: 1.1-1.7; 2004-June 2006: 1.6, 1.3-2.0), and in those who died at under 55 compared with at least 55 years of age. HCV infection represents a significant, growing, public health burden in Scotland in terms of early deaths from liver disease.

Abstract
The neutron elastic magnetic form factor was extracted from quasielastic electron scattering on deuterium over the range Q;{2}=1.0-4.8 GeV2 with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. High precision was achieved with a ratio technique and a simultaneous in situ calibration of the neutron detection efficiency. Neutrons were detected with electromagnetic calorimeters and time-of-flight scintillators at two beam energies. The dipole parametrization gives a good description of the data.

Abstract
We report on the results of the first measurement of exclusive f_{0}(980) meson photoproduction on protons for E_{gamma}=3.0-3.8 GeV and -t=0.4-1.0 GeV2. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The resonance was detected via its decay in the pi;{+}pi;{-} channel by performing a partial wave analysis of the reaction gammap-->ppi;{+}pi;{-}. Clear evidence of the f_{0}(980) meson was found in the interference between P and S waves at M_{pi;{+}pi;{-}} approximately 1 GeV. The S-wave differential cross section integrated in the mass range of the f_{0}(980) was found to be a factor of about 50 smaller than the cross section for the rho meson. This is the first time the f_{0}(980) meson has been measured in a photoproduction experiment.

Abstract
Because of the accessible and renewable nature of feedstock and the potential for the reduction of harmful combustion emissions and greenhouse gases, biodiesels have received increasing interest as an alternate fuel. Oral exposure to biodiesels is a concern because of contact during refuelling, accidental ingestion and exposure through ground water contamination. Although biodiesels from various feedstock are in use commercially and experimentally, very little is known about their potential adverse effects and no data is available on their potential for ground water contamination. A study was performed on male rats following oral treatment with experimental biodiesels (dissolved in corn oil) derived from canola oil (Bio-C), soy oil (Bio-S) and fish oil (Bio-F), at 500 mg/kg body weight/day, 5 days per week, for 4 weeks. Separate groups of animals were treated with low sulfur diesel (LSD) for comparison purpose, and with corn oil alone to serve as control. The potential for ground water contamination by biodiesels was investigated by the preparation of water-accommodated fractions (WAF) followed by gas chromatographic analysis. WAF from Bio-F and Bio-S was found to have the highest level of dichloromethane extractable materials. Gas chromatographic analysis indicated that the extractable materials from biodiesels contained much higher proportion of C15-C30 materials than LSD. Increased liver weight was observed in animal treated with Bio-C, Bio-S and LSD and decreased thymus weight was found in those treated with Bio-S. Histopathological changes typical of male-rat specific hyaline-droplet nephropathy were detected in kidney tubules of animals treated with LSD, Bio-S and Bio-C. Mild adaptive changes were observed in thyroids of animals treated with LSD, Bio-S and Bio-F. Clinical chemical and biochemical changes were confined to Bio-S and LSD treated rats and included elevation in some hepatic phase-I and phase-II drug metabolizing enzymes and hepatic palmitoyl Co-A oxidase, and elevated urinary concentrations of ascorbic acid and albumin. At the given dose level of 500 mg/kg bw/day, the overall treatment-related effects of biodiesels and LSD are mild, and the severity of the treatment effects may be ranked as: LSD>Bio-S>Bio-C>Bio-F. Considered together with the presence of a higher level of water extractable materials, Bio-S may be more of a concern for potential human health than Bio-C and Bio-F in an oral exposure scenario. Further studies are needed to identify and characterize the constituents contributing to the treatment-related effects specific to these experimental biodiesels.

Abstract
AIM To test the reliability, validity and sensitivity of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-MY24 questionnaire, designed to assess the quality of life of myeloma patients with the QLQ-C30. METHODS The study was carried out through the EORTC Quality of Life Group using clinical trials in seven countries. All trials used the QLQ-C30 and QLQ-MY24 at baseline and a follow-up timepoint. RESULTS Two hundred and forty patients participated. The questionnaires were acceptable to patients. The hypothesised scale structure (disease symptoms, side-effects, body image and future perspective) was confirmed by multi-trait scaling, internal consistency and correlation analysis. Most scales demonstrated sensitivity to change and discriminated between clinically different patients. The social support scale (4 items) was removed due to observed ceiling effects. CONCLUSION The final questionnaire contains 20 items, QLQ-MY20, and is a reliable and valid instrument recommended for use with the QLQ-C30 in myeloma patients.

Abstract
Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a meditation-based intervention designed to reduce recurrence in people with histories of relapsing unipolar major depression. MBCT is an eight-session course delivered to groups of participants who are currently not (or only mildly) depressed. We sought to determine whether MBCT is suitable for older people, and what modifications they may require. We recruited 38 participants aged over 65, of whom 30 completed an MBCT course. Their responses at assessment, post-course and one-year follow-up interviews, plus comments at three-monthly 'reunion' meetings, provided data for thematic analysis. Main themes emerging for participants as a group are considered, as are individuals' understandings and uses of MBCT, and how these developed during and following the course. We found MBCT promising as a cost-effective addition to clinicians' repertoire for addressing depression in old age, and identified issues for further research. Participants' comments indicated that they considered MBCT a helpful intervention for older sufferers from recurring depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of children with migraine are limited given the paucity of randomized controlled trials, especially in the emergency department (ED). Our objectives were to: (1) characterize the treatment of children with migraine in the ED; (2) determine whether treatment varies in pediatric versus mixed (pediatric and adult) EDs. METHODS Children aged 5 to 17 years presenting to 4 regional emergency departments in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada during the 2003/2004 fiscal year with a diagnostic code of headache or migraine were selected. A standardized retrospective chart abstraction was performed and migraine or probable migraine cases were classified based on the International Classification of Headache Disorders II. RESULTS Three hundred and eighty-two cases were identified of which 48.7% (n = 186/382) met sufficient criteria for migraine. No treatment was given in 44.2% (n = 169/382). Simple oral analgesics (23.3%; n = 89/182) and dopamine antagonists (metoclopramide and prochlorperazine; 20.7%; n = 79/182) were prescribed first-line most commonly. Opiate medications (5.5%), ketorolac (4.7%), dihydroergotamine (1%) were prescribed first-line infrequently. There was a significant difference in the management choices between pediatric and mixed adult/pediatric EDs (chi(2)= 19.695; df = 5; P= .001). The pediatric ED was more likely to prescribe a dopamine antagonist (12.9 vs 6.8%; P= .044) while the mixed adult/pediatric EDs were more likely to prescribe an opiate (28.1% vs 18.4%; P= .031). Children with migraine in all EDs were significantly more likely to receive drug therapy (68.3% vs 42.9%; P < .001) or a dopamine antagonist (32.3% vs 9.7%; P < .001). Polypharmacy (31.2%; n = 119/382) and neuroimaging (29.1%; n = 111/382) were common. Outcome was poorly documented overall. No adverse events were recorded. CONCLUSIONS Significant variation in practice in the management of acute headaches in children was observed between mixed population and pediatric-only emergency physicians in the same city. Most children do not receive any drug therapy. Children presenting to the pediatric ED were significantly more likely to receive a dopamine antagonist while opiates were prescribed more commonly in the mixed ED. More clinical trials are required in children to clarify areas of clinical uncertainty on which evidence-based practice guidelines can be formed.

Abstract
Men outperform women on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT; A. Bechara, H. Damasio, D. Tranel, & A. R. Damasio, 1997). In this study, the authors show that sex differences are not due to differences in general emotional arousal or the abilities to calculate or reverse responses. Imaging studies have shown that, during the IGT, men increase activity in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and lateral orbital PFC, whereas women increase activity in the left medial orbital PFC. Deliberation of personal moral (PM) dilemmas also increases activity in medial and lateral dorsal PFC, whereas deliberation of moral impersonal (MI) dilemmas increases activity in lateral dorsal PFC. In the present study, men and women performed the IGT during PM, MI, or control deliberations. Deliberation of only PM dilemmas increased women's IGT performance to the level of men.

Abstract
Calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)(2)) has been used extensively to induce dentine regeneration through formation of dentine bridges at sites of pulp exposure after dental tissue injury, however, the biological processes underpinning these events are unclear. We hypothesise that growth factors and other bio-active molecules, sequestered within dentine matrix, may be released by the action of Ca(OH)(2) and signal gene expression in pulp cells, which mediates the changes in cell behaviour observed during regeneration. Powdered sound, human dentine samples were extracted with either 0.02 m Ca(OH)(2), pH 11.7 or 10% EDTA, pH 7.2 ( a control known extractant of bio-active and other ECM molecules from dentine) over a 14-day period. Extracts were compared for non-collagenous protein (NCP) and glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content using dye binding assays and protein compositions were analysed by 1D-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (1D-PAGE) and TGF-beta1 ELISA. The effects of extracts on TGF-beta1, Collagen-1alpha and Nestin gene expression were analysed using semi-quantitative RT-PCR in the dental MDPC-23, OD-21 and fibroblastic Swiss 3T3 cell lines following 24h of exposure. Ca(OH)(2) solubilised NCPs and GAGs from the dentine ECM, although with a lower yield than the EDTA solution and with different kinetics. 1D-PAGE analysis demonstrated some differences in profiles for proteins solubilised from dentine by Ca(OH)(2) and EDTA. Both solutions released TGF-beta1 from the dentine with higher concentrations present in the EDTA (1.395 +/- 0.036 ng/mg) versus the Ca(OH)(2) (0.364 +/- 0.012 ng/mg) extract. Notably, both extracts induced similar gene expression profiles in all cell lines. These data provide a rational explanation for the action of Ca(OH)(2) during pulp capping in which the cellular activities involved in dentine bridge formation may be mediated through release of growth factors and other bio-active molecules from the dentine by Ca(OH)(2).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effectiveness of four mass media campaigns on calls to a national Quitline by Māori (the indigenous people of New Zealand). METHODS Monthly Quitline call data and calls within one hour of a television commercial (TVC) being shown were analysed for the 2002-2003 period. Data on target audience rating points (TARPs) and expenditure on TVCs were also used (n = 2319 TVC placements). RESULTS Māori were found to register with the Quitline at higher rates during the most intense six campaign months (15% more registrations compared to less intense months). The most effective campaign generated 115 calls per 100 TARPs by Māori callers within one hour of TVC airing (the "Every cigarette" campaign). A more Māori orientated campaign with both health and cultural themes generated 91 calls per 100 TARPs from Māori callers. For these two campaigns combined, the advertising cost per new registration with the Quitline by a Māori caller was NZD 30-48. Two second hand smoke campaigns that did not show the Quitline number were much less effective at 25 and 45 calls per 100 TARPs. CONCLUSIONS These television advertising campaigns were effective and cost effective in generating calls to a national Quitline by Māori. Health authorities should continue to explore the use of both "threat appeal" style media campaigns and culturally appropriate campaigns to support Quitline use by indigenous peoples.

Abstract
The extent to which free-living microorganisms exist in geographically isolated, genetically distinct populations is a subject of continuing debate. Some authorities contend that many microorganisms have cosmopolitan distributions, while others provide evidence that more limited geographical distribution of genetically distinct populations can occur. We report the occurrence of two morphologically similar, but genetically distinct, populations of the microbial eukaryote Peridinium limbatum (Stokes) Lemmermann from neighboring Northern Wisconsin freshwater bodies. Five strains of P. limbatum were cultured by single-cell isolation from both Crystal Lake and Crystal Bog (Oneida Co., WI). Genetic variation between the two populations encompassed 8.9% (mean of 35.4 of 397 nucleotides) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS1 and ITS2) region. In contrast, 0.5% (mean of 2.25 of 397 nucleotides) variation was observed within the Crystal Lake population and 0.3% (mean of 1.21 of 397 nucleotides), within the Crystal Bog population. This difference between the two populations was highly statistically significant (p-value << 0.001). The extent of genetic variation between the two P. limbatum populations was greater than that reported in the literature for some morphologically distinguishable microalgal species, suggesting the occurrence of cryptic sister species. On the other hand, hybrid sequences obtained from one of the Crystal Lake strains suggest that the two populations may still be members of a single sexually compatible biological species. Our data suggest that the two neighboring P. limbatum populations may be diverging genetically under conditions of limited gene flow, suggesting a mechanism for the origin of geographically isolated, genetically distinct populations of microbial eukaryotes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The diagnosis of gastric cancer is based on histological confirmation at endoscopy with the emphasis on early detection to improve prognosis. The aims of this study were to identify the proportion of patients with gastric adenocarcinoma in whom the diagnosis was missed at first endoscopy and the subsequent delay which occurred before the histological diagnosis was established. METHODS Retrospective review of 137 consecutive patients with biopsy-proven gastric adenocarcinoma presenting to one surgical unit over a five-year period. RESULTS Two patients with a biopsy diagnosis at laparotomy and 6 patients in whom case notes could not be traced were excluded from the study. Of the remaining 129 patients, the diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma was missed at first endoscopy in 18 (14%). The median delay to histological diagnosis in this subgroup of patients was 13 weeks (range 3-102). CONCLUSION Delays in establishing the diagnosis of gastric adenocarcinoma following initial endoscopy occur in a number of patients. Greater suspicion and a more rigorous protocol for repeat endoscopy and biopsy must be implemented in order to reduce the number of missed diagnoses after initial endoscopy.

Abstract
Numerous signaling molecules associate with lipid rafts, either constitutively or after engagement of surface receptors. One such molecule, phospholipase Cgamma-1 (PLCgamma1), translocates from the cytosol to lipid rafts during T-cell receptor (TCR) signaling. To investigate the role played by lipid rafts in the activation of this molecule in T cells, an influenza virus hemagglutinin A (HA)-tagged PLCgamma1 was ectopically expressed in Jurkat T cells and targeted to these microdomains by the addition of a dual-acylation signal. Raft-targeted PLCgamma1 was constitutively tyrosine phosphorylated and induced constitutive NF-AT-dependent transcription and interleukin-2 secretion in Jurkat cells. Tyrosine phosphorylation of raft-targeted PLCgamma1 did not require Zap-70 or the interaction with the adapters Lat and Slp-76, molecules that are necessary for TCR signaling. In contrast, the Src family kinase Lck was required. Coexpression in HEK 293T cells of PLCgamma1-HA with Lck or the Tec family kinase Rlk resulted in preferential phosphorylation of raft-targeted PLCgamma1 over wild-type PLCgamma1. These data show that localization of PLCgamma1 in lipid rafts is sufficient for its activation and demonstrate a role for lipid rafts as microdomains that dynamically segregate and integrate PLCgamma1 with other signaling components.

Abstract
This study examines the diagnostic accuracy and acceptability of telemedicine in the field of rheumatology. One hundred patients had a telephone and televisual consultation and the results were compared with a face-to-face consultation. While the telephone consultations were often unsatisfactory, the televisual consultations were highly accurate (97%) and acceptable to patients, general practitioners, and specialists.

Abstract
CYP2J2 is abundant in human heart and its arachidonic acid metabolites, the epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs), have potent vasodilatory, antiinflammatory and cardioprotective properties. This study was designed to examine the role of CYP2J2 in hypoxia-reoxygenation-induced injury in cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs). Early passage BAECs were exposed to 24-h hypoxia followed by 4-h reoxygenation (HR). HR resulted in cell injury, as indicated by significant increases in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and trypan blue stained cells (p < 0.01) and was associated with a decrease in CYP2J2 protein expression. Transfection of BAECs with the CYP2J2 cDNA resulted in increased CYP2J2 expression and arachidonic acid epoxygenase activity, compared with cells transfected with an irrelevant green fluorescent protein (GFP) cDNA. HR induced significant injury in GFP-transfected BAECs, as indicated by increases in LDH release and trypan blue-stained cells (p < 0.01); however, the HR-induced injury was markedly attenuated in CYP2J2-transfected cells (p < 0.01). HR increased cellular 8-iso-prostaglandin F(2alpha) (p < 0.05), and decreased eNOS expression, L-arginine uptake and conversion, and nitrite production (p < 0.01) in GFP-transfected BAECs. CYP2J2 transfection attenuated the HR-induced increase in 8-iso-prostaglandin F(2alpha) (p < 0.05) and decreased the amount of extracellular superoxide detected by cytochrome c reduction under normoxic conditions (p < 0.05) but did not significantly affect HR-induced decreases in eNOS expression, L-arginine uptake and conversion, and nitrite production. Treatment of BAECs with synthetic EETs and/or epoxide hydrolase inhibitors also showed protective effects against HR injury (p < 0.05). These observations suggest: (1) HR results in endothelial injury and decreased CYP2J2 expression; (2) transfection with the CYP2J2 cDNA protects against HR injury; and (3) the cytoprotective effects of CYP2J2 may be mediated, at least in part, by antioxidant effects.
