Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze factors associated with discordance between tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) results among household contacts of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients. DESIGN TST (purified protein derivative) and IGRA (QuantiFERON-TB Gold) were performed on household contacts of PTB patients diagnosed between 2006 and 2007 in Salvador, Brazil. Discordant test groups were compared with the TST-/IGRA- group. RESULTS Of 261 household contacts satisfactorily tested by TST, 145 (55.6%) had positive TST results; of 298 satisfactorily tested by IGRA, 127 (43.1%) had positive results. The test agreement was 0.76 (kappa = 0.53, 95%CI 0.43-0.63). Sixty-one (24%) were discordant: 44 (72%) with TST+/IGRA- and 17 (28%) with TST-/IGRA+ results. Compared to the TST-/IGRA- group, the TST+/IGRA- and TST+/IGRA+ groups were significantly more likely to have a chest X-ray showing old lung scars (OR = 6.8, 95%CI 1.3-35.0; OR = 7.4, 95%CI 2.2-24.4, respectively). The TST-/IGRA+ group was exposed to their index cases for significantly longer than the TST-/IGRA- group (OR = 7.2, 95%CI 1.7-29.3). CONCLUSION The TST+/IGRA- and TST+/IGRA+ groups shared more similar characteristics with each other than with the TST-/IGRA- group. In a setting endemic for TB, TST results appear to be more suitable in the decision to treat latent TB infection.

Abstract
Obstructive nonapnoeic event (ONE) scoring is shrouded in confusion. This is important in patients with mild disease, in whom precision is crucial. The aims of the present study were: 1) to identify ONEs using oesophageal pressure (OP) (OP-ONEs) and a noninvasive (NI) method (NI-ONEs); 2) to compare both methods of scoring; and 3) to determine the contribution of ONE definitions to clinical findings. Patients with suspected sleep apnoeas (respiratory disturbance index <or=10) during a first polysomnography were subjected to a second with an OP measurement. OP-ONEs and NI-ONEs were defined as an increase in OP or discernible reduction in the amplitude of thoracoabdominal bands with both desaturation and/or arousal. Bland-Altman analysis established agreement. Comparisons were made between OP-ONEs, NI-ONEs and clinical findings. In our sample (n = 90), the addition of an arousal to the NI-ONEs or OP-ONEs with only desaturation increased the number of NI-ONEs by 329 and 362%, respectively. NI-ONEs with arousal and/or desaturation detected 91% of OP-ONEs. The association with sleepiness depended on the incorporation of arousal into the definition of ONEs. In patients with mild disease, the addition of an arousal to ONEs, with only desaturation, markedly increased respiratory disturbance index, with probable therapeutic implications. Scoring respiratory events as apnoea and ONEs is easier and sufficiently accurate.

Abstract
A method for long chain fatty acids (LCFA) extraction, identification and further quantification by gas chromatography was developed and its application to liquid and solid samples collected from anaerobic digesters was demonstrated. After validation, the usefulness of this method was demonstrated in a cow manure digester receiving pulses of an industrial effluent containing high lipid content. From the LCFA analysis data it was showed that the conversion of oleic acid, the main LCFA fed to the reactor, by the adapted biomass became faster and more effective along the successive pulses. Conversely, the accumulation of palmitic acid in the solid phase suggests that degradation of this LCFA, under these conditions, is less effective.

Abstract
The development of RBC autoantibodies resulting from or associated with allogeneic blood transfusions is not an easily determined complication of RBC transfusions. This report discusses one patient who developed RBC autoantibodies in association with an allogeneic blood transfusion and alloimmunization leading to a temporary bystander immune hemolysis. A 72-year-old woman was hospitalized as a result of severe anemia and received two units of ABO- and D-compatible RBCs. She had a history of two pregnancies 40 years before, but no history of RBC transfusion, and her antibody screen was negative. On the tenth day after transfusion her hemoglobin dropped, and alloanti-c was identified in her serum and eluate. At this time she received another two units of compatible blood according to her phenotype (group O, R1R1, K:-1). After 48 hours, she developed joint pain, pyrexia, and hemoglobinuria, and her Hb dropped from 9.2 g/dL to 5.3 g/ dL. The direct antiglobulin test was positive, an IgG autoantibody was present in the eluate, and the antibody investigation revealed the presence of anti-Jk(b) in addition to the previously identified alloanti-c. Her genotype was determined, and, based on the findings, two additional units were selected, found to be compatible, and transfused without incident. Transfusions were discontinued, and she was treated with IVIG and corticosteroids. Her Hb increased to 9.7 g/dL, and the patient made an uneventful recovery. It was concluded that transfusion of incompatible RBCs induced the formation of an autoantibody in this patient, resulting in lysis of bystander RBCs. The need for additional blood transfusion was successfully avoided by treatment with IVIG, steroid therapy, and rituximab.

Abstract
A multitype bisexual branching process is considered to model the behaviour of a Y-linked gene with two genotypes in a two-sex population. It is assumed perfect fidelity mating with preference of females for the males carrying certain allele of the gene. Under these assumptions, we study the rate of growth of each genotype on the event of non-extinction. The rate of growth of a genotype may depend on whether the other survives or becomes extinct and, in general, both genotype frequencies grow at different rates. We also investigate conditions for the simultaneous explosion of both genotypes to have positive or zero probability.

Abstract
We investigate the probabilistic evolution of a near-critical bisexual branching process with mating depending on the number of couples in the population. We determine sufficient conditions which guarantee either the almost sure extinction of such a process or its survival with positive probability. We also establish some limiting results concerning the sequences of couples, females, and males, suitably normalized. In particular, gamma, normal, and degenerate distributions are proved to be limit laws. The results also hold for bisexual Bienaymé–Galton–Watson processes, and can be adapted to other classes of near-critical bisexual branching processes.

Abstract
We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of homogeneous multidimensional Markov chains whose states have nonnegative integer components. We obtain growth rates for these models in a situation similar to the near-critical case for branching processes, provided that they converge to infinity with positive probability. Finally, the general theoretical results are applied to a class of controlled multitype branching process in which random control is allowed.

Abstract
Yarrowia lipolytica converts methyl ricinoleate to gamma-decalactone, a high-value fruity aroma compound. The highest amount of 3-hydroxy-gamma-decalactone produced by the yeast (263 mg l(-1)) occurred by increasing the k(L)a up to 120 h(-1) at atmospheric pressure; above it, its concentration decreased, suggesting a predominance of the activity of 3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase. Cultures were grown under high-pressure, i.e., under increased O(2) solubility, but, although growth was accelerated, gamma-decalactone production decreased. However, by applying 0.5 MPa during growth and biotransformation gave increased concentrations of dec-2-en-4-olide and dec-3-en-4-olide (70 mg l(-1)).

Abstract
Long-chain fatty acids (LCFA) associated with anaerobic sludge by mechanisms of precipitation, adsorption, or entrapment can be biodegraded to methane. The mineralization kinetics of biomass-associated LCFA were established according to an inhibition model based on Haldane's enzymatic inhibition kinetics. A value around 1,000 mg COD-LCFA..g VSS(-1) was obtained for the optimal specific LCFA content that allowed the maximal mineralization rate. For sludge with specific LCFA contents of 2,838 +/- 63 and 4,571 +/- 257 mg COD-LCFA..g VSS(-1), the specific methanogenic activities in the presence of acetate, butyrate, and H(2)/CO(2) were significantly enhanced after the mineralization of the biomass-associated LCFA. For sludge with a specific LCFA content near the optimal value defined by the kinetic model, the effect of adding VFA to the medium was studied during the mineralization of the biomass-associated LCFA. Different patterns were obtained for each individual substrate. Acetate and butyrate were preferentially consumed by the consortium, but in the case of propionate no evidence of a sequential consumption pattern could be withdrawn. It was concluded that LCFA do not exert a bactericidal neither a permanent toxic effect toward the anaerobic consortia. A discussion is addressed to the relative roles of a reversible inhibitory effect and a transport limitation effect imposed by the LCFA surrounding the cells.

Abstract
Increase in air or oxygen pressure in microbial cell cultures can cause oxidative stress and consequently affect cell physiology and morphology. The behaviour of Saccharomyces cerevisiae grown under hyperbaric atmospheres of air and pure oxygen was studied. A limit of 1.0 MPa for the air pressure increase (i.e. 0.21 MPa of oxygen partial pressure) in a fed-batch culture of S. cerevisiae was established. Values of 1.5 MPa air pressure and 0.32 MPa pure oxygen pressure strongly inhibited the metabolic activity and the viability of the cells. Also, morphological changes were observed, especially cell-size distribution and the genealogical age profile. Pressure caused cell compression and an increase in number of aged cells. These effects were attributed to oxygen toxicity since similar results were obtained using air or oxygen, if oxygen partial pressure was equal to or higher than 0.32 MPa. The activity of the antioxidant enzymes, catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) (cytosolic and mitochondrial isoformes) indicated that the enzymes have different roles in oxidative stress cell protection, depending on other factors that affect the cell physiological state.
