Abstract
The purpose of this study was to verify that the organic status of pork purchased in the markets from four different regions of China can be authenticated by the combined analysis of stable isotopes and multiple elements. Four stable isotope ratios (δ13C, δ15N, δ2H and δ18O) and the concentrations of seven elements (K, Na, Mg, Ca, Fe, Cu and Se) were determined in organic and conventional pork samples from four locations of China. Principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) were used to analyze stable isotope ratios and multi-element concentrations in pork. Based on the limited database of analytical values, the methodology would be potentially able to confirm whether a sample of pork came from the region and organic status it claimed. These results provide a possibility for authenticity of organic agricultural products from a large scope such as a province even a country.

Abstract
Algal bioremediation becoming most fascinating to produce biomass as biofuels feedstock while remediating wastes, also improving carbon-footprint through carbon capturing and utilization (CCU) technology. Non-algae process however offers effective treatment but metabolic CO2 emission is major drawback towards sustainable bioprocess. Mixotrophic cultivation strategy (MCS) enables to treat organic and inorganic wastes which broadly extend microalgae application towards cleaner and sustainable bioeconomy. Latest focus of global think-tanks to encourage bioprocess holding promise of sustainability via CCU ability as important trait. Several high CO2 emitting industries forced to improve their carbon-footprints. MCS driven microalgae treatment could be best solution for those industries. This review covers recent updates on MCS applications for waste-to-value (biofuels) and environment remediation. Moreover, recommendations to fill knowledge gaps, and commercial algal biofuel could be cost-effectiveness and sustainable technology for biocircular economy if fuelled by waste streams from other industries.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Salmonella is one of the top causes for bacterial foodborne infections in the United States, emphasizing the importance of controlling this pathogen for protecting public health. Poultry and poultry products are commonly associated with Salmonella, and interventions during production and processing are necessary to manage the risk of infection due to consumption of poultry products. In recent times, the demand for organic and antibiotic-free poultry has increased owing to consumer perceptions and concerns of increasing prevalence of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens. However, the microbiological effect of these management practices is not clear. This study was conducted to determine the difference in the AMR of Salmonella isolated from poultry processed conventionally and organically. Fecal samples, carcass rinses, and environmental samples were collected over 1 year and analyzed for the prevalence of Salmonella and AMR. Results of this experiment showed that organic chickens were associated with statistically higher levels of Salmonella during early processing steps. However, no difference in Salmonella prevalence was observed between organic and conventional carcasses postchill. In addition, for most antimicrobial agents tested, prevalence of AMR Salmonella in conventional processing was lower in this study than was reported by the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System for chickens at slaughter. These observations indicate that organic methods may introduce greater risk of Salmonella contamination; however, proper interventions during processing can abate this risk. In addition, this study supports the assertion that raising chickens without the use of antibiotics may result in lower prevalence of AMR Salmonella. HIGHLIGHTS

Abstract
Until now, there has been a lack of analytical methods that can reliably verify the authenticity of organically grown plants and derived organic food products. In this study, stable isotope ratio analysis of hydrogen (H, δ2H), carbon (C, δ13C), nitrogen (N, δ15N), oxygen (O, δ18O) and sulfur (S, δ34S) was conducted along the tomato passata production process using organic and conventionally grown tomatoes from two Italian regions over two years. A gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS) based method was developed and applied for analysis of C and N isotope ratios in amino acids derived from tomatoes. Of the bulk isotope ratios, δ15N was the most significant parameter for discriminating organic from conventional products. The classification power was improved significantly by compound-specific isotope analysis regardless of the production years and regions. We conclude that isotope analysis of amino acids is a novel analytical tool for complementing existing certification and control procedures in the organic tomato sector.

Abstract
Voltage data acquired after probe signal transmitted through the organic film and reflected off the film surface as a function of 0.36 mW millimeter wave signal frequency in the range 110–160 GHz. Five different organic photovoltaic (OPV) materials and one 95:5 blend produced at 2 spin rates are used. These materials are a) fluorinated 2-alkyl-benzol[d] [1–3]triazole (FTAZ), a high hole-mobility polymer used for transistors and photovoltaics, b) diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP3T), an acceptor polymer used in field-effect transistors (FET), c) Y5(PffBT4T-2OD) film that possesses remarkable temperature controllable morphology, d) a neat conjugated polymer P3HT, Poly(3-(hexylthiophene-2,5diyl) film that is used in optoelectronic devices and as a conductive binder for Li-ion batteries, e) phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) films and its soluble derivatives used as n-type organic semiconductors, and f) excitonic photovoltaic material 95%:5% donor-acceptor blend P3HT:PCBM produced by 2 different spin rates. Measurement of direct-current (dc) transmitted and reflected power (RF voltage signal) are measured using a newly developed continuous wave (CW) D-waveguide band probe (110–160 GHz) apparatus named time-resolved millimeter wave conductivity (TR-mmWC) [1]. Transmission and first surface reflection voltages are captured by a zero-bias Schottky barrier diode (ZBD) and converted to relevant dc voltages. Original voltage signal datasets attached with this can be utilized for photovoltaic, dielectric property estimation, and other semiconductor physics applications. A manually collected dataset of transmission and reflection coefficient at incident probe power level ∼0.9 mW for 95:5 P3HT:PCBM films produced at 2 different spin rates, and one separately only for the neat P3HT film are also presented here in tabular form.

Abstract
The relationships between the fatty acid (FA) composition in forage and milk (F&M) from different dairy systems were investigated. Eighty milk samples and 91 forage samples were collected from 40 farms (19 organic, 11 pasture and 10 conventional) in the Netherlands, during winter and summer. The FA profiles of F&M samples were measured with gas chromatography. The results showed that the F&M of organic farms were significantly differentiated from the F&M of other farms, both in summer and winter. The differences are likely due to the different grazing strategies in summer and different forage composition in winter. The Pearson's correlation results showed the specific relationship between individual FAs in forages and related milk. A PLS-DA model was applied to classify all milks samples, resulting in 87.5% and 83.3% correct classifications of training set and validation set.

Abstract
Desorption of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) from sedimentary materials plays a vital role in dictating the fate and transport of HOCs in the environment. Desorption irreversibility is a commonly observed phenomenon in laboratory sorption/desorption studies of HOCs. A desorption-resistant fraction (DRF) typically exists during the desorption process. To correctly evaluate the DRF of HOCs can considerably contribute to the understanding of availability and bioavailability of HOCs. This can substantially benefit contaminant remediation and cleanup operations. Conventional batch method to measure the DRF replies on repetitive washing of the sediments, which is time-consuming and can be impractical. This study presents an experimental protocol to quantify the DRF of the sediment-sorbed organic contaminants in a rapid manner. This protocol utilizes cosolvent to expedite desorption kinetics and adopts an ultrafiltration/centrifugation combined method to achieve a complete separation of sediment and solution phases. This proposed experimental protocol can facilitate the quantification of the DRF of sorbed contaminants to understand and minimize the uncertainties associated with risk-based pollution remediation approach. This protocol has the potential to be widely used in environmental studies to characterize sorption and desorption properties of HOCs with soil and sedimentary materials.

Abstract
Dairy production systems have rapidly intensified over the past several decades. Dairy farms in many world regions are larger and concentrated in fewer hands. Higher productivity can increase overall economic gains but also incurs site-specific social and environmental costs. In this paper, we review the drivers and impacts of dairy intensification. We identify in the literature four prominent concerns about dairy intensification: the environment, animal welfare, socioeconomic well-being, and human health. We then critically assess three frameworks-sustainable intensification, multifunctionality, and agroecology-which promise win-win solutions to these concerns. We call for research and policy approaches that can better account for synergies and trade-offs among the multiple dimensions of dairy impacts. Specifically, we suggest the need to (1) consider dairy system transitions within broader processes of social-environmental change and (2) investigate how certain framings and metrics may lead to uneven social-environmental outcomes. Such work can help visualize transformations towards more equitable, ethical, and sustainable food systems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Negative energy balance during the transition period is a concern for both conventional and certified organic dairy systems. During early lactation, supplemental strategies are used to cope with nutrient deficiencies that are associated with impaired health, production, and reproduction. As organic certified dairies in the United States face restricted access to dietary supplements, the evaluation of products especially formulated for organic production is needed. Our objective was to assess the effect of supplementing 0.45 kg/d of an organic rumen-protected fat (RPF) on health, metabolic status, and productive and reproductive performance of organic certified Holstein cows from 1 to 150 days in milk (DIM). Two-hundred and two cows were enrolled in a randomized blocked controlled trial conducted from January to July 2017 in a certified organic dairy located in Northern Colorado (USA). Two groups were randomly assigned to be individually supplemented with organic RPF (ORG; n = 100) or control pellets (CON; n = 102) once per day, in addition to the total mixed ration (TMR). Outcomes of interest included milk yield (kg/d) and milk components, serum concentration of glucose, and non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), resumption of cyclicity, time-to-first artificial insemination (AI), conception at first AI, and conception within 150 DIM, disease occurrence, culling, mortality. RESULTS A significant effect for the inclusion of RPF was found in daily milk yield; RPF supplemented cows had greater milk yield (1.6 kg/d) compared to CON cows up to 150 DIM (P = 0.03). During grazing, multiparous (MP) ORG cows had greater milk yield compared to MP CON cows, whereas no effect was found in primiparous (PP) cows. Health outcomes, serum metabolite concentrations, and reproductive performance were not affected by the inclusion of RPF. Body condition loss was smaller in the ORG group up to 80 DIM; however, there was no effect on body condition during the grazing season and in the overall study period. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that supplementation of RPF increased daily milk yield and prevented body condition loss during at 90 DIM. However, RPF supplementation did not affect health, serum metabolite concentration, milk components, and reproductive outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the iodine concentration in semi-skimmed cow's milk available on the Dutch market. METHODS The iodine content of 16 milk brands was determined at four times (June, September, December 2016 and March 2017) using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Brands included 12*pasteurized (n = 48 samples) and 4*UHT (n = 16 samples) milk, the brands subdivided into 8* organic and 8*conventional milk (each 32 samples). RESULTS The median iodine concentration was 15.9 μg/100 g. The iodine concentration increased from June 2016 to March 2017 from 12.4 μg/100 g to 19.9 μg/100 g. The time trend with difference between summer and winter milk iodine content was stronger in organic than conventional producing farms indicating more uncertainties to supply iodized minerals by pasture feeding. Despite reflection of the time trend in the investigated kinds of milk, the distributions of iodine concentrations were similar between organic and conventional produced milk and between pasteurized and UHT milk. CONCLUSIONS Milk was shown as a valuable iodine source for the Dutch consumer. The significant time trend in the iodine concentration in favor of the milk from a stable feeding period (Dec and March) compared with a pasture feeding period (June and September) is a challenge to keep all year round the cow's iodine supply level constant, mainly in organic producing farms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The tendency of some sectors of the population to consume organic food has also come to include baby food. Nevertheless, it is necessary to develop studies to support the true nutritional and toxicological value of these products, making special emphasis in several trace elements. To our knowledge, no studies have been conducted on this type of organic food. METHODS Weaning foods with different formulations categorized as organic were analyzed to determine Se and Cd contents as well as its bioaccesibility. The analyses were conducted by electro thermal atomic absorption spectroscopy (ET - AAS) after the treatment of the samples with acid mineralization. Besides, macronutrient analyses (protein, fat and dietary fiber) were also developed. Finally, a novelty statistic approach such as @Risk was used to evaluate contributions to DRI or PTWI of Se and Cd derived for consumption of these weaning foods. RESULTS Se content ranged between 2.44-15.4 μg Kg 1. Samples with meat ingredients showed the highest Se contents, while weaning foods consisting of fruits or vegetables presented the lowest concentrations. Se bioccessible concentration ranged between 1.90-4.35 μg Kg-1 with a greater uniformity amongst analyzed samples. Regarding Cd, concentrations of this heavy metal ranged between 1.23 and 3.64 μg Kg-1. Furthermore, Cd bioaccessibility of organic weaning foods ranged between 0.17 and 1.38 μg Kg-1. The solubility of all samples studied was around 20% from the initial Cd concentration. A negative statistical correlation between fat content - Cd bioaccesible (p < 0.05; r = - 0.756) and Cd content - Se bioaccesible (p < 0.05; r = - 0.777) were also found. CONCLUSIONS Cd concentrations are considerably lower than those reported in weaning formulas which were not categorized as organic. On the other hand, the analysed organic jars did not represent a significant source of Se. The probabilistic assessment developed, showed that contributions to DRI of Se for infants 1-3 years old by consumption of these weaning foods, are excessively low (15% at best).

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two non-antibiotic treatment options for digital dermatitis (DD) on an organic certified dairy farm. A randomized clinical trial was conducted using 70 multiparous Holstein cows with an early DD lesion at a USDA certified organic dairy farm in Northern Colorado, USA. Cows were enrolled in the study based on the presence of early DD lesions (scores M1 and M2) and randomly assigned to one of three treatments: (1) topical application of copper sulfate and iodine (CUI); (2) topical application of honey and iodine (HOI); and (3) control subject to no treatment (CON). Cows were evaluated at enrolment and on days 3, 12, 28, and 120 post treatment for pain and lesion size and received a locomotion and a lesion score. Cure was defined as the transition from active to non-active stages (M1/M2 to M0 or M4). The formulations had variable effects on the treatment of DD. The cure rate was numerically higher for CUI on all follow up days. The proportion of cows experiencing pain on d3 after treatment was greater in CON, followed by HOI and CUI. However, this proportion increased in HOI during the follow up period. The CUI group had a greater reduction in lesion size and larger lesions persisted in HOI. Non-antibiotic treatment formulations were partially effective in the treatment of DD in organic dairy cows: The two non-antibiotic formulations resulted in an earlier transition to mature lesions compared with the control group. The CUI combination was the most effective treatment in reducing lesion size, pain, and lameness in affected cows. However, this combination had short-term efficacy, which did not persist throughout the duration of the study. The HOI combination produced only transient reduction in lesion size.

Abstract
Status considerations have recently been linked to prosocial behaviors. This research shows that even everyday consumer behaviors such as favoring organic foods serve as prosocial status signaling. Key ideas from the continuum model of consumer impression formation and the theories of costly signaling and symbolic consumption are synthetized to make sense of this phenomenon. Two web-surveys (Ns = 187, 259) and a field study (N = 336) following experimental designs are conducted. This approach allows the analysis of both the more and less conscious reactions of consumers. Study 1 shows that the image of consumers favoring organic product versions is marked by characteristics consistent with prosocial status signaling. Study 2 replicates these findings with another sample and a wider range of products and demonstrate that observers' conservative values influence the image formed of organic food users. Study 3 establishes that similar image effects also emerge through a less conscious formation process and that they extend to how organic food users are socially treated. This research advances the current understanding concerning the interlinkages between organic food usage, prosocial status signaling, consumer impressions and reputation management. Substantively, the studies provide novel compelling empirical evidence for the ability of non-luxurious everyday consumer behaviors to qualify as prosocial status signaling. Conceptually, the integration of evolutionary and sociocultural perspectives represents a major contribution. More specifically, this research yields new understanding as regards the role of individual variation in sensing and interpreting status symbols.

Abstract
Poultry production is the fastest growing meat sector worldwide. In the last five years, growing concerns have been expressed by international health agencies and consumers about the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria from poultry meat to human. Consequently, poultry producers have adopted alternative production systems based on reduced antibiotic usage, including organic and antibiotic-free (AF) production. However, the effect of these production systems on the antibiotic resistance of the gut flora in slaughtered poultry has been poorly investigated. We hypothesized that organic and AF production systems reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance in the commensal Escherichia coli of broilers at slaughter compared with conventional production. Cecal content from broilers raised in conventional (292), AF (291), or organic (272) flocks (855 broilers in total) belonging to the same company was sampled. E. coli loads [colony-forming units (CFU/g)] and numbers of E. coli resistant to nalidixic acid (E. colinal) were determined for each sample. Antibiotic susceptibility of one isolate per sample was evaluated using the disc diffusion method; colistin resistance was determined by using the broth microdilution method. The differences in bacterial loads from the three production types were evaluated using one-way ANOVA. Differences in the proportion of resistant isolates in the three production lines were evaluated using Pearson's χ2 or Fisher's test. The strength of the association was evaluated by using odds ratio (OR), with the conventional production type as a reference (OR = 1). Overall, the analysis revealed a high level of resistance (50% or higher) to ampicillin, cefazolin, sulfonamides, nalidixic acid, and tetracycline, independently of the production type. High proportion of ciprofloxacin resistance (52%) was observed, with 4.5% isolates resistant to cefotaxime and 1.8% resistant to colistin. The average loads (log CFU/g cecal content) of E. colinal were determined as 6.84 for AF, 6.38 for organic type, and 7.27 for conventional type. The difference was significant (p < 0.00001). Interestingly, broilers from AF flocks had higher E. colinal loads than broilers from organic flocks. This trend (conventional > AF > organic) was confirmed by qualitative data. However, the magnitude of the effect, measured as a reduced risk of resistance, varied broadly for the antibiotics tested. These findings suggest that poultry production systems alternative to the conventional broiler production are associated with reduced frequency of antibiotic-resistant E. coli among the commensal gut flora, posing a lower risk to the environment and the consumer.

Abstract
Food production processes may have both positive and negative environmental sustainability impacts. This makes decision-making challenging in the transition towards more sustainable food production systems. In this paper, a new method for presenting environmental impacts in the context of planetary boundaries is demonstrated. This will help food and agricultural producers compare the magnitudes of various environmental impacts. The environmental sustainability impacts of an organic sheep farm in the boreal climate zone in Finland are studied herein first using a life cycle assessment method. The results are then normalized and presented in a planetary boundary framework to ascertain the extent of different environmental impacts. The results show that in the planetary boundary context, there are positive impacts of sheep grazing on biosphere integrity (genetic diversity) and biogeochemical flows and negative impacts on climate change, land use or freshwater use. Magnitudes of the impacts greatly dependent on the assumptions made especially regarding biosphere integrity impacts. In the future, it is crucial that decision-making be based on the evaluation of various environmental impacts and that the focus be more on complex sustainability thinking, rather than on one single environmental impact. This research demonstrates that results from a life cycle assessment can be modified and presented in a planetary boundaries context. A planetary boundary framework approach similar to that proposed herein could be further used to identify different environmental sustainability perspectives and to help one better recognize the multifunctional aspects of the ecosystem processes.

Abstract
The effect of pre-treatment (dipping and vacuum impregnation in lemon juice solution), freezing and frozen storage (FS) on single and total polyphenols (free and conjugated) content and antioxidant activity (AOA) of organic and conventional apples, was investigated. Fresh organic and conventional fruits showed different profiles of free and conjugated polyphenols while their total phenolic content and AOA were similar. Organic and conventional apple tissues showed different physiological responses to physical stresses described by changes in phenolic profiles. Vacuum impregnation in lemon juice affected the polyphenols extractability of both the organic and conventional apples and favored their enrichment with bioactive compounds (AOA = +11.5%). FS decreased the single and conjugated polyphenols content of the pre-treated apple samples and the effect was different between organic and conventional fruits. After FS, not pre-treated organic apples showed a lower AOA reduction than the conventional ones (-13% vs -25%), while no differences were found on pre-treated samples.

Abstract
The physico-elemental profiles of commercially attained and roasted organic coffee beans from Ethiopia, Colombia, Honduras, and Mexico were compared using light microscopy, X-ray micro-computed tomography, and external beam particle induced X-ray emission. External beam PIXE analysis detected P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, and Sr in samples. Linear discriminant analysis showed that there was no strong association between elemental data and production region, whilst a heatmap combined with hierarchical clustering showed that soil-plant physico-chemical properties may influence regional elemental signatures. Physical trait data showed that Mexican coffee beans weighed significantly more than beans from other regions, whilst Honduras beans had the highest width. X-ray micro-computed tomography qualitative data showed heterogeneous microstructural features within and between beans representing different regions. In conclusion, such multi-dimensional analysis may present a promising tool in assessing the nutritional content and qualitative characteristics of food products such as coffee.

Abstract
Background Antimicrobial use (AMU) in livestock is a debated topic, mainly due to the risk of associated development of antimicrobial resistance. There is focus on reducing AMU in the Danish pig production, which accounts for the largest proportion of AMU for animals in Denmark. Due to special restriction on AMU in organic pig production, the AMU in organic pig production is lower than in conventional pig production. There is concern that reduced AMU could jeopardize animal health and welfare, if it reflects insufficient treatment of sick animals, which might be reflected by the prevalence and types of lesions found at meat inspection. However, little is known about the associations between AMU and meat inspection findings in pigs from organic farms. Furthermore, excess amount of antimicrobial product after a treatment cannot be re-prescribed in organic pig herds. The initial prescription is recorded in the national database VetStat, but the unused amount is not deducted leading to uncertainty when reporting AMU. The objectives of this study were to 1) describe AMU patterns based on prescription data for organic pig production and compare with those of the conventional pig production for year 2016, 2) study the associations between herd-level AMU prescription data and meat inspection data for organic pig herds and 3) validate herd-level AMU prescription data in VetStat against treatment records collected on-farm in organic Danish pig herds. Results and conclusions Gastrointestinal indications account for the largest proportion of AMU in both organic pig herds (65 and 54% of treatment doses for weaners and finishers, respectively) and conventional pig herds (80 and 68% of doses for weaners and finishers, respectively). A larger proportion is prescribed for respiratory indications in organic than conventional weaners and arthropathic indications in finishers. No associations between AMU and meat inspection data were found. This needs further investigation as the prevalence of lesions at slaughter was slightly (non-significantly) higher in herds with no registered AMU than with AMU prescriptions. Only 8 out of 31 herds had recorded their AMU sufficiently detailed to compare, and using VetStat as a proxy for AMU led to 9–88% overestimation of the actual use in 7 out of these 8 herds and 120% underestimation in one herd.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Consumption of cow's milk, which is associated with diet and health benefits, has decreased in the USA. The simultaneous increase in demand for more costly organic milk suggests consumer concern about exposure to production-related contaminants may be contributing to this decline. We sought to determine if contaminant levels differ by the production method used. DESIGN Half-gallon containers of organic and conventional milk (four each) were collected by volunteers in each of nine US regions and shipped on ice for analysis. Pesticide, antibiotic and hormone (bovine growth hormone (bGH), bGH-associated insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1)) residues were measured using liquid or gas chromatography coupled to mass or tandem mass spectrometry. Levels were compared against established federal limits and by production method. SETTING Laboratory analysis of retail milk samples. RESULTS Current-use pesticides (5/15 tested) and antibiotics (5/13 tested) were detected in several conventional (26-60 %; n 35) but not in organic (n 34) samples. Among the conventional samples, residue levels exceeded federal limits for amoxicillin in one sample (3 %) and in multiple samples for sulfamethazine (37 %) and sulfathiazole (26 %). Median bGH and IGF-1 concentrations in conventional milk were 9·8 and 3·5 ng/ml, respectively, twenty and three times that in organic samples (P < 0·0001). CONCLUSIONS Current-use antibiotics and pesticides were undetectable in organic but prevalent in conventionally produced milk samples, with multiple samples exceeding federal limits. Higher bGH and IGF-1 levels in conventional milk suggest the presence of synthetic growth hormone. Further research is needed to understand the impact of these differences, if any, on consumers.

Abstract
Curcumin has recently attracted much attention due to the wide range of its physiological actions such as anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, anti-diabetic and anti-microbial effects. This phytochemical can be used as a sensing material for the detection of chemicals due to its optical properties as a fluorescent polyphenol. Curcumin and its derivatives can make complexes with many cations such as Cu2+, Fe2+, Hg2+, Pt2+, Re3+ and Al3+via bearing 1,3-diketones with keto-enol isomerization. The complexation of curcumin with certain metal ions leads to its solubility in water and producing various hues of colors as well as cytotoxic and antimicrobial effects. Curcumin can also form complexes with certain metal ions and thus serve as a chelating agent for anions such as ClO-, CN-, F- and S2-. Moreover, conjugation of curcumin with some organic compounds such as cysteine and poly-glycerol acrylate provides an efficient fluorescence detection system for picric acid and 2-vinyl pyridine in aqueous media. In this review, we focused on curcumin as a key element in a membrane composition of chemical sensors. In addition, the latest sensing platforms based on curcumin and its derivatives are briefly described.

Abstract
The effect of dairy management system (conventional, CNV; organic, ORG; free-range, FRG) and month on retail milk phytoestrogen composition was assessed for 12 consecutive months. ORG milk contained more secoisolariciresinol, matairesinol, lariciresinol, sum of plant lignans, daidzein, genistein, formononetin, naringenin, equol, sum of isoflavones and coumestrol, than CNV and FRG milk. This may be explained by the higher supply of pasture, and grazed or ensiled clover, in ORG dairy diets. Seasonal variation in milk phytoestrogen concentrations was higher for ORG than CNV and FRG systems. Phytoestrogen composition did not vary between FRG and CNV milk. Consuming organic milk can increase intake of potentially beneficial lignans and isoflavonoids, and in particular equol; but, any effects on human health from such milk compositional differences cannot be implied.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of UK dairy production system, month, and their interaction, on retail milk fatty acid (FA) profile throughout the year. Milk samples (n = 120) from four conventional (CON), four organic (ORG) and two free-range (FR) brands were collected monthly. ORG milk had more nutritionally-desirable polyunsaturated FA, including rumenic acid and the omega-3 PUFA α-linolenic, eicosapentaenoic and docosapentaenoic acids, and less of the nutritionally-undesirable palmitic acid. Milk FA profile was similar between FR and CON systems, but FR milk had less saturated FA (SFA) and/or palmitic acid, and/or greater α-linolenic and rumenic acids in certain months within the peak-grazing season. According to the measured milk FA profiles and UK milk fat intakes, milk and dairy products contribute around one-third of the maximum recommended SFA intake. A small increased intake of beneficial PUFA may be expected by consuming ORG milk but human health implications from such differences are unknown.

Abstract
The European Court of Justice's recent ruling that the new techniques for crop development are to be considered as genetically modified organisms under the European Union's regulations exacerbates the need for a critical evaluation of those regulations. The paper analyzes the regulation from the perspective of moral and political philosophy. It considers whether influential arguments for restrictions of genetically modified organisms provide cogent justifications for the policies that are in place, in particular a pre-release authorization requirement, mandatory labelling, and de facto bans (in the form of withholding or opting out of authorizations). It is argued that arguments pertaining to risk can justify some form of pre-release authorization scheme, although not necessarily the current one, but that neither de facto bans nor mandatory labelling can be justified by reference to common arguments concerning naturalness, agricultural policy (in particular the promotion of organic farming), socio-economic effects, or consumers' right to choose.

Abstract
Sangiovese red wines produced from organic (ORG) and biodynamic (BDN) vineyards over two consecutive vintages (2011 and 2012) were compared for chemical and sensory parameters to investigate a sustainable approach to grape production. The effects of management practice, vintage, and their interaction were investigated. The ORG wines showed higher total acidity and lower volatile acidity and pH. Although trained panelists highlighted some differences in astringency and odor complexity between ORG and BDN wines, consumers had no preference. The concentrations of anthocyanins, phenolic and cinnamic acids, and flavonols, as well as colour components, did not differ-contrary to results from the conversion period from ORG to BDN (2009 and 2010) in the same vineyard (Parpinello, Rombolà, Simoni, & Versari, 2015). Together, these two studies demonstrate that ORG and BDN wine characteristics tend to be similar after the first year of conversion, indicating that the BDN method can produce high-quality Sangiovese wine.

Abstract
Shale gas flowback fluid (SGF) is generated during shale gas extraction and typically contains a variety of toxic and refractory organic compounds. In this work, a microwave-activated persulfate process (MW-PS process) was developed to pretreat SGF. The major factors influencing the treatment efficiency of the MW-PS process (PS dose, initial pH, MW power, and reaction time) were optimized, and the synergetic effect (SE), degradation of recalcitrant matter, and energy consumption were systematically investigated. Results showed that the SE of the process reached a high index (i.e., 9.85), suggesting a significant synergetic effect of MW and PS. In addition, under the optimal MW-PS condition (PS dose of 2.5 g/L, MW power of 900 W, and initial pH of 2), chemical oxygen demand removal reached 66.40% in a short reaction time of 10 min. Other analyses demonstrated that benzene series compounds, organic acids, lipid substances, alkanes, antioxidants, and fluorescent dissolved organic matter in SGF were decomposed to smaller-molecule organic matter, suggesting that refractory and toxic organic matter was removed by the MW-PS treatment process. Overall, the results of this study showed that MW-PS technology is an effective and promising method to treat SGF once the operation parameters are optimized.
