Progress in Novel Electrodeposited Bond Coats for Thermal Barrier Coating Systems

The increased demand for high performance gas turbine engines has resulted in a continuous search for new base materials and coatings. With the significant developments in nickel-based superalloys, the quest for developments related to thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems is increasing rapidly and is considered a key area of research. Of key importance are the processing routes that can provide the required coating properties when applied on engine components with complex shapes, such as turbine vanes, blades, etc. Despite significant research and development in the coating systems, the scope of electrodeposition as a potential alternative to the conventional methods of producing bond coats has only been realised to a limited extent. Additionally, their effectiveness in prolonging the alloys' lifetime is not well understood. This review summarises the work on electrodeposition as a coating development method for application in high temperature alloys for gas turbine engines and discusses the progress in the coatings that combine electrodeposition and other processes to achieve desired bond coats. The overall aim of this review is to emphasise the role of electrodeposition as a potential cost-effective alternative to produce bond coats. Besides, the developments in the electrodeposition of aluminium from ionic liquids for potential applications in gas turbines and the nuclear sector, as well as cost considerations and future challenges, are reviewed with the crucial raw materials' current and future savings scenarios in mind.

Analysis of EDM Performance, through a Thermal-Electrical Model with a Trunk-Conical Discharge Channel, Using a Steel Tool and an Aluminium Workpiece

In this article, a finite element (FE) thermal-electrical model with a trunk-conical discharge channel is employed to simulate individual EDM discharges with a time-on of 18 μs up to 320 μs, which are subsequently compared with the experimental results to validate the model. The discharge channel is a trunk-conical electrical conductor which dissipates heat by the Joule heating effect, being the correspondent factor equal to 1. Instead of the usual copper-iron electrode combination, steel (DIN CK45) and aluminium alloys (DIN 3.4365) are the implemented materials on both the tool and the workpiece, respectively. The numerical results were measured using the melting temperature of the materials as the boundary of material removal. The results obtained with the thermal-electrical model, namely the tool wear ratio, the tool wear rate, the material removal rate, and the surface roughness, are in good agreement with experimental results, showing that the new FE model is capable of predicting accurately with different materials for the electrodes.

Crystal structure characterization and electronic structure of a rare-earth-containing Zintl phase in the Yb-Al-Sb family: Yb3AlSb3

A rare-earth-containing compound, ytterbium aluminium antimonide, Yb₃AlSb₃ (Ca₃AlAs₃-type structure), has been successfully synthesized within the Yb-Al-Sb system through flux methods. According to the Zintl formalism, this structure is nominally made up of (Yb²⁺)₃[(Al^1-)(1b - Sb^2-)₂(2b - Sb^1-)], where 1b and 2b indicate 1-bonded and 2-bonded, respectively, and Al is treated as part of the covalent anionic network. The crystal structure features infinite corner-sharing AlSb₄ tetrahedra, [AlSb₂Sb_2/2]^6-, with Yb²⁺ cations residing between the tetrahedra to provide charge balance. Herein, the synthetic conditions, the crystal structure determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, and electronic structure calculations are reported.

Using chemical speciation modelling to discuss variations in patch test reactions to different aluminium and chromium salts

BACKGROUND

Allergic contact dermatitis to metals is diagnosed by applying a metal salt in a patch test. The bioavailability of the metal salt might depend on the choice of metal salt, the concentration, sweat composition, and pH.

OBJECTIVES

The main purpose of this study was to apply chemical speciation modelling, which is based on experimentally derived input data and calculates the concentrations of chemical forms (species) in solutions, to reproduce and discuss clinical patch test results of aluminium and chromium.

METHODS

Joint Expert Speciation System (JESS), Hydra/Medusa, and Visual MINTEQ were employed to study the bioavailable fraction and chemical form of clinically applied aluminium and chromium salts as a function of salt type, applied concentration, sweat composition, and pH.

RESULTS

Investigated aluminium and chromium salts can have a very low bioavailability with a large dependency on sweat composition, pH, metal salt, and concentration. Both aluminium and chromium ions could shift the pH towards acidic or basic values based on their chemical form.

CONCLUSIONS

Reported seasonal and interpatient variability in positive reactions to aluminium is likely related to sweat pH and composition. Potassium dichromate increases the pH, whereas aluminium and trivalent chromium chloride strongly decrease the pH, possibly increasing skin diffusion.

Metal-Dependent and Selective Crystallization of CAU-10 and MIL-53 Frameworks through Linker Nitration

The reaction of the V-shaped linker molecule 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid (H2 L0 ), with Al or Ga nitrate under almost identical reaction conditions leads to the nitration of the linker and subsequent formation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with CAU-10 or MIL-53 type structure of composition [Al(OH)(L)], denoted as Al-CAU-10-L0, 2, 4, 6 or [Ga(OH)(L)], denoted as Ga-MIL-53-L2 . The Al-MOF contains the original linker L0 as well as three different nitration products (L2 , L4 and L4/6 ), whereas the Ga-MOF mainly incorporates the linker L2 . The compositions were deduced by 1 H NMR spectroscopy and confirmed by Rietveld refinement. In situ and ex situ studies were carried out to follow the nitration and crystallization, as well as the composition of the MOFs. The crystal structures were refined against powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data. As anticipated, the use of the V-shaped linker results in the formation of the CAU-10 type structure in the Al-MOF. Unexpectedly, the Ga-MOF crystallizes in a MIL-53 type structure, which is usually observed with linear or slightly bent linker molecules. To study the structure directing effect of the in situ nitrated linker, pure 2-nitrobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (m-H2 BDC-NO2 ) was employed which exclusively led to the formation of [Ga(OH)(C8 H3 NO6 )] (Ga-MIL-53-m-BDC-NO2 ), which is isoreticular to Ga-MIL-53-L2 . Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the higher stability of Ga-MIL-53-L2 compared to Ga-CAU-10-L2 and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations (GCMC) are in agreement with the observed water adsorption isotherms of Ga-MIL-53-L2 .

Comparison of Different Materials for Self-Pressurized Vitrification of Feline Oocytes-First Results

Cryobanking is a crucial part on species conservation. Nowadays, there is no suitable protocol for vitrification of feline oocytes. Self-pressurized rapid freezing of different cell types proved to mimic the advantages of high pressure freezing. As this method could also be applied for gamete rescue under field conditions, the aim here was to analyse the impact of self-pressurized vitrification on feline cumulus-oocyte-complexes (COCs) and to determine the appropriate material. Therefore, COCs of domestic cat were randomly vitrified (n = 189) in metal tubes of different materials: Aluminium, silver, and titanium. No significant differences were found on oocytes' competence after thawing. On average, 44% of the COCs presented normal morphology and 48.2% of them showed a polar body after in vitro maturation (IVM) and were subsequently fertilised. Aluminium tubes were positive on toxicity tests, producing the lowest cleavage rates. Silver tubes showed no toxic effect, but the cleavage rate was lower than with titanium tubes, and a previous association with embryotoxicity and biological alterations makes us aware of its indiscriminate use. Titanium seems to be the only inert material of them, presenting a slightly higher maturation (55.6%) and cleavage (20%) rates. Nevertheless, more studies should follow to increase embryo competence after warming.

Comparing Xe+ pFIB and Ga+ FIB for TEM sample preparation of Al alloys: Minimising FIB-induced artefacts

Recently, the dual beam Xe+ plasma focused ion beam (Xe+ pFIB) instrument has attracted increasing interest for site-specific transmission electron microscopy (TEM) sample preparation for a local region of interest as it shows several potential benefits compared to conventional Ga+ FIB milling. Nevertheless, challenges and questions remain especially in terms of FIB-induced artefacts, which hinder reliable S/TEM microstructural and compositional analysis. Here we examine the efficacy of using Xe+ pFIB as compared with conventional Ga+ FIB for TEM sample preparation of Al alloys. Three potential source of specimen preparation artefacts were examined, namely: (1) implantation-induced defects such as amophisation, dislocations, or 'bubble' formation in the near-surface region resulting from ion bombardment of the sample by the incident beam; (2) compositional artefacts due to implantation of the source ions and (3) material redeposition due to the milling process. It is shown that Xe+ pFIB milling is able to produce improved STEM/TEM samples compared to those produced by Ga+ milling, and is therefore the preferred specimen preparation route. Strategies for minimising the artefacts induced by Xe+ pFIB and Ga+ FIB are also proposed. LAY DESCRIPTION: FIB (focused ion beam) instruments have become one of the most important systems in the preparation of site-specific TEM specimens, which are typically 50-100 nm in thickness. TEM specimen preparation of Al alloys is particularly challenging, as convention Ga-ion FIB produces artefacts in these materials that make microstructural analysis difficult or impossible. Recently, the use of noble gas ion sources, such as Xe, has markedly improved milling speeds and is being used for the preparation of various materials. Hence, it is necessary to investigate the structural defects formed during FIB milling and assess the ion-induced chemical contamination in these TEM samples. Here we explore the feasibility and efficiency of using Xe+ PFIB as a TEM sample preparation route for Al alloys in comparison with the conventional Ga+FIB.

Anharmonic effects on the dynamics of solid aluminium fromab initiosimulations

Two approaches to simulations of phonon properties of solids beyond the harmonic approximation, the self-consistentab initiolattice dynamics (SCAILD) and decoupled anharmonic mode approximation (DAMA) are critically benchmarked against each other and molecular dynamics simulations using a density-functional-theory description of electronic states, and compared to experimental data for fcc aluminium. The temperature-dependence of phonon dispersion and the phonon density-of-states, heat capacity, and the mean atomic displacement for fcc aluminium are examined with these approaches at ambient pressure. A comparison of results obtained with the harmonic approximation to the ones predicted by SCAILD and DAMA reveal a negligible anharmonic contribution to phonon frequencies, a small, but significant influence on heat capacity, and a strong effect on atomic mean-square displacement. The phase space accessed with SCAILD and DAMA is reduced relative to molecular and harmonic lattice dynamics simulations. In particular the DAMA results are in good agreement with displacement amplitudes determined by the Debye-Waller factor in x-ray diffraction experiments.

Aluminium contact allergy without vaccination granulomas: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Aluminium contact allergy is mainly seen as granulomas following immunization with aluminium-adsorbed vaccines and contact allergy following epicutaneous exposure may be overlooked. To investigate the prevalence of aluminium allergy confirmed by patch testing, with no association with vaccination granulomas, and explore whether epicutaneous exposure to aluminium can contribute to allergic contact dermatitis. Two authors independently searched PubMed and MEDLINE (OVID) for case studies on contact allergy to aluminium proven by patch testing. Age-stratified meta-analyses to calculate the pooled prevalence were performed. Twenty-five studies describing a total of 73 cases were included in the review. Seven studies were suitable for meta-analyses. The prevalence of aluminium contact allergy was 5.61% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.12%-11.08%) for children and 0.36% (95% CI 0.04%-0.67%) for adults. The studies described a variety of epicutaneous exposures, where metallic aluminium, topical medicaments, and deodorants were the main sources. Aluminium sensitization without a known exposure source was described in 10 of the 25 articles. The prevalence of aluminium contact allergy in the general public may be higher than expected and not solely related to vaccination granulomas. However, the clinical relevance is rare if not related to granulomas.

CMT Additive Manufacturing Parameters Defining Aluminium Alloy Object Geometry and Mechanical Properties

Additive manufacturing technologies based on metal melting use materials mainly in powder or wire form. This study focuses on developing a metal 3D printing process based on cold metal transfer (CMT) welding technology, in order to achieve enhanced productivity. Aluminium alloy test specimens have been fabricated using a special 3D printing technology. The probes were investigated to find correlation between the welding parameters and geometric quality. Geometric measurements and tensile strength experiments were performed to determine the appropriate welding parameters for reliable printing. The tensile strength of the product does not differ significantly from the raw material. Above 60 mm height, the wall thickness is relatively constant due to the thermal balance of the welding environment. The results suggest that there might be a connection between the welding parameters and the printing accuracy. It is demonstrated that the deviation of ideal geometry will be the smallest at the maximum reliable welding torch movement speed, while printing larger specimens. As a conclusion, it can be stated that CMT-based additive manufacturing can be a reliable, cost-effective and rapid 3D printing technology with enhanced productivity, but without significant decrease in mechanical stability.

The bioavailability of ingested 26Al-labelled aluminium and aluminium compounds in the rat

The fractional uptake of ingested aluminium and aluminium compounds (aluminium citrate, aluminium nitrate, aluminium chloride, aluminium sulphate, aluminium hydroxide, aluminium oxide, aluminium metal, powdered aluminium pot electrolyte, acidic sodium aluminium phosphate (SALP), basic sodium aluminium phosphate (Kasal), sodium aluminium silicate and FD&C red 40 aluminium lake) from the gastro-intestinal tract of adult female rats was measured. This was determined by comparing retained body burden of 26Al at seven days post-admistration of an i.v. injection of 26Al-labelled aluminium citrate with that retained following the gastric admistration of 26Al-labelled test compounds as either solutions or suspended solid. The calculated percentage uptake of 26Al for all the aluminium solutions was similar: aluminium citrate 0.08%, aluminium chloride 0.05%, aluminium nitrate 0.05% and aluminium sulphate 0.21%. The uptake of 26Al administered as insoluble particulates was lower: 0.03% for aluminium hydroxide; 0.02% for aluminium oxide; 0.04% for powdered pot electrolyte; 0.12% for sodium aluminium silicate; and 0.09% for FD&C red 40 aluminium lake. For aluminium metal, SALP and Kasal the amount of 26Al present in the rats was insufficient to determine uptake and was less than 0.03%. The results produced for aluminium citrate, aluminium hydroxide and aluminium sulphate are close to those published for man.

Impact of aluminium toxicity on vital human sperm parameters-Protective effects of silymarin

Aluminium is an environmental pollutant which induces oxidative stress, while silymarin is a potent antioxidant. This study was conducted to investigate the possible protective effects of silymarin on adverse effects of aluminium chloride on vital sperm parameters as well as its effects on oxidative stress markers in human spermatozoa. Human spermatozoa were divided into 5 groups as follows: (a) spermatozoa at 0 hr; (b) spermatozoa at 180 min (control); (c) spermatozoa treated with aluminium chloride; (d) spermatozoa treated with silymarin + aluminium chloride; and (e) spermatozoa treated with silymarin. The sperm samples were used to assess sperm vital parameters such as acrosome and plasma membrane integrity, viability, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and motility as well as sperm malondialdehyde (MDA) level and the total antioxidant capacity. The percentage of acrosome and plasma membrane integrity, viability, MMP, motility and the total antioxidant capacity of spermatozoa treated with aluminium chloride significantly decreased compared with control group, while the level of MDA significantly increased compared with the control group. In the silymarin + aluminium chloride group, silymarin could significantly compensate the adverse effects of aluminium chloride on these parameters. Administration of silymarin alone significantly increased the percentage of acrosome and plasma membrane integrity, viability, motility and total antioxidant capacity, while significantly reduced MDA levels compared with the control group. Aluminium chloride by inducing oxidative stress exerts disastrous effects on the vital parameters of human spermatozoa and silymarin, as a potent antioxidant, could reverse the effects of aluminium chloride on these parameters.

A Toxic Synergy between Aluminium and Amyloid Beta in Yeast

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most prevalent, age-related, neurodegenerative disease, is associated with the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) and oxidative stress. However, the sporadic nature of late-onset AD has suggested that other factors, such as aluminium may be involved. Aluminium (Al³⁺) is the most ubiquitous neurotoxic metal on earth, extensively bioavailable to humans. Despite this, the link between Al³⁺ and AD has been debated for decades and remains controversial. Using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model organism expressing Aβ42, this study aimed to examine the mechanisms of Al³⁺ toxicity and its interactions with Aβ42. S. cerevisiae cells producing Aβ42 treated with varying concentrations of Al³⁺ were examined for cell viability, growth inhibition, and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Al³⁺ caused a significant reduction in cell viability: cell death in yeast producing green fluorescent protein tagged with Aβ42 (GFP–Aβ42) was significantly higher than in cells producing green fluorescent protein (GFP) alone. Additionally, Al³⁺ greatly inhibited the fermentative growth of yeast producing GFP–Aβ42, which was enhanced by ferric iron (Fe³⁺), while there was negligible growth inhibition of GFP cells. Al³⁺- induced ROS levels in yeast expressing native Aβ42 were significantly higher than in empty vector controls. These findings demonstrate Al³⁺ has a direct, detrimental toxic synergy with Aβ42 that can be influenced by Fe³⁺, causing increased oxidative stress. Thus, Al³⁺ should be considered as an important factor, alongside the known characteristic hallmarks of AD, in the development and aetiology of the disease.

Movement Disorders and Dementia in a Woman With Chronic Aluminium Toxicity: Video-MRI Imaging

Background:

Aluminium encephalopathy results from exposure to aluminium from occupational, recreational, and environmental sources. Movement disorders, cerebellar ataxia, pyramidal tract signs, dementia, microcytic anemia and bone disease are typical manifestations.

Case Report:

A 55-year-old woman had clinical manifestations, persistent hyperaluminemia without magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan changes of toxic encephalopathy following a prolonged exposure to marine grade paints containing 30% aluminium. Chelation therapy with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) demonstrated decreased levels of aluminemia and significant neurological improvement over time.

Discussion:

This diagnosis should be entertained in patients with movement disorders, cerebellar ataxia, pyramidal signs, and dementia of unknown etiology.

Highlights:

Aluminium encephalopathy (AE) is a neurological syndrome caused by aluminium neurotoxicity. Manifestations include cognitive impairment, motor dysfunction, microcytic anemia and bone disease. This case illustrates AE with hyperaluminemia associated with chronic exposure to industrial paints and clinical and biochemical reversibility after chelation therapy with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Movement disorders are highlighted.

The structure of Ce2Al3Ge4 refined for the first time from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data

Single crystals of dicerium trialuminium tetragermanide, Ce₂Al₃Ge₄, have been synthesized from a high-temperature reaction using an eutectic mixture of Al and Ge as a metal flux. Through single-crystal X-ray diffraction it was established that Ce₂Al₃Ge₄ crystallizes in the centrosymmetric space group Cmce (No. 64) with the Ba₂Cd₃Bi₄ structure type (Pearson code oC36). Five atoms compose the asymmetric unit, i.e. one Ce, two Al, and two Ge atoms, all in special positions with Wyckoff symbols 8f (Ce), 4a and 8e (Al), and 8e and 8f (Ge). The structure can be described as a three-dimensional network of Al and Ge atoms, with Ce atoms occupying the cavities of the framework.

Chemoselective C-C σ-Bond Activation of the Most Stable Ring in Biphenylene*

The chemoselective cleavage of a six-membered aromatic ring in biphenylene is reported using an aluminum(I) complex. This type of selectivity is unprecedented. In every example of transition metal mediated C-C σ-bond activation reported to date, the reaction occurs at the central four-membered ring of biphenylene. Insight into the origin of chemoselectivity was obtained through a detailed mechanistic analysis (isolation of an intermediate, DFT studies, activation strain analysis). In conclusion, the divergent reactivity can be attributed to differences in both the symmetry and radial extension of the frontier molecular orbitals of the aluminum(I) fragment compared to that of common transition metal fragments.

Synthesis and Coordination Behavior of a New Hybrid Bidentate Ligand with Phosphine and Silylene Donors

This work describes the synthesis and coordination behavior of a new mixed-donor ligand PhC(NtBu)2 SiC6 H4 PPh2 (1) containing both silylene and phosphine donor sites. Ligand 1 was synthesized from a reaction of ortho-lithiated diphenylphosphinobenzene (LiC6 H4 PPh2 ) with chlorosilylene (PhC(NtBu)2 SiCl). Treatment of 1 with Se and GeCl2 resulted in SiIV compounds 2 and 3 by selective oxidation of the silylene donor. This strong σ-donor ligand induces dissociation of CuCl and PhBCl2 leading to formation of ionic complexes 4 and 5 respectively. The reaction of 1 with ZnCl2 and AlCl3 resulted in the formation of chelate complexes 5 and 7, respectively, while treatment with EtAlCl2 and GaCl3 forms monodentate complexes 8 and 9. X-ray analysis of 4 showed that the copper is in the spiro center of the two five-membered rings. Moreover, the copper(I)chloride has not been oxidized but dissociates to Cu+ and [CuCl2 ]- . All the compounds are well characterized by mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

Synthesis and crystal structures of [Al(H2O)6](SO4)NO3·2H2O and [Al(H2O)6](SO4)Cl·H2O

Common features in the crystal structures of [Al(H₂O)₆](SO₄)NO₃·2H₂O and [Al(H₂O)₆](SO₄)Cl·H₂O are [Al(H₂O)₆]³⁺ octa­hedra and sulfate tetra­hedra. These components, the remaining anion (NO₃⁻ and Cl⁻, respectively) and lattice water mol­ecules are separated from each other. Inter­actions are mediated via medium–strong hydrogen bonding.

Two novel aluminium double salts, [Al(H₂O)₆](SO₄)NO₃·2H₂O, hexa­qua­alumin­ium sulfate nitrate dihydrate, (1), and [Al(H₂O)₆](SO₄)Cl·H₂O, hexaqua­aluminium sulfate chloride hydrate, (2), were obtained in the form of single crystals. Their crystal structures are each based on an octa­hedral [Al(H₂O)₆]³⁺ unit and both structures have in common one charge-balancing SO₄²⁻ anion. The final positive charge from the aluminium(III) cation is balanced by an NO₃⁻ or a Cl⁻ anion for (1) and (2), respectively. Compound (1) further contains two unligated water mol­ecules while compound (2) only contains one unligated water mol­ecule. In the crystal structures, all components are spatially separated and inter­actions are mediated via medium–strong hydrogen bonding, compared to many other reported aluminium sulfates where corner-sharing of the building units is common. The two compounds represent rare cases where one aluminium(III) cation is charge-balanced by two different anions.

The Role of Symbiotic Microorganisms, Nutrient Uptake and Rhizosphere Bacterial Community in Response of Pea (Pisum sativum L.) Genotypes to Elevated Al Concentrations in Soil

Aluminium being one of the most abundant elements is very toxic for plants causing inhibition of nutrient uptake and productivity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of microbial consortium consisting of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), rhizobia and PGPR for counteracting negative effects of Al toxicity on four pea genotypes differing in Al tolerance. Pea plants were grown in acid soil supplemented with AlCl3 (pHKCl = 4.5) or neutralized with CaCO3 (pHKCl = 6.2). Inoculation increased shoot and/or seed biomass of plants grown in Al-supplemented soil. Nodule number and biomass were about twice on roots of Al-treated genotypes after inoculation. Inoculation decreased concentrations of water-soluble Al in the rhizosphere of all genotypes grown in Al-supplemented soil by about 30%, improved N2 fixation and uptake of fertilizer 15N and nutrients from soil, and increased concentrations of water-soluble nutrients in the rhizosphere. The structure of rhizospheric microbial communities varied to a greater extent depending on the plant genotype, as compared to soil conditions and inoculation. Thus, this study highlights the important role of symbiotic microorganisms and the plant genotype in complex interactions between the components of the soil-microorganism-plant continuum subjected to Al toxicity.

Genomic Instability Is an Early Event in Aluminium-Induced Tumorigenesis

Genomic instability is generally considered as a hallmark of tumorigenesis and a prerequisite condition for malignant transformation. Aluminium salts are suspected environmental carcinogens that transform mammary epithelial cells in vitro through unknown mechanisms. We report here that long-term culture in the presence of aluminium chloride (AlCl₃) enables HC11 normal mouse mammary epithelial cells to form tumours and metastases when injected into the syngeneic and immunocompetent BALB/cByJ strain. We demonstrate that AlCl₃ rapidly increases chromosomal structural abnormalities in mammary epithelial cells, while we failed to detect direct modulation of specific mRNA pathways. Our observations provide evidence that clastogenic activity—a well-recognized inducer of genomic instability—might account in part for the transforming abilities of aluminium in mammary epithelial cells.

Performance of Graphite and Titanium as Cathode Electrode Materials on Poultry Slaughterhouse Wastewater Treatment

Despite the potential applicability of the combination between aluminium (anode) and graphite or titanium (cathode) for poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment, their technical and economic feasibilities have not been comprehensively captured. In this study, aluminium (anode) and graphite and titanium as cathode electrode materials were investigated and compared in terms of their performance on poultry slaughterhouse wastewater treatment. The wastewater samples collected from the Izhevsk Production Corporative (PC) poultry farm in Kazakhstan were treated using a lab-based electrochemical treatment plant and then analyzed after every 20 and 40 min of the treatment processes. Cost analysis for both electrode combinations was also performed. From the analysis results, the aluminium-graphite electrode combination achieved high removal efficiency from turbidity, color, nitrite, phosphates, and chemical oxygen demand, with removal efficiency ranging from 72% to 98% after 20 min, as well as 88% to 100% after 40 min. A similar phenomenon was also observed from the aluminium-titanium electrode combination, with high removal efficiency achieved from turbidity, color, total suspended solids, nitrite, phosphates, and chemical oxygen demand, ranging from 81% to 100% after 20 min as well as from 91% to 100% after 40 min. This means the treatment performances for both aluminium-graphite and aluminium-titanium electrode combinations were highly affected by the contact time. The general performance in terms of removal efficiency indicates that the aluminium-titanium electrode combination outperformed the aluminium-graphite electrode combination. However, the inert character of the graphite electrode led to a positive impact on the total operating cost. Therefore, the aluminium-graphite electrode combination was observed to be cheaper than the aluminium-titanium electrode combination in terms of the operating cost.

Facile synthesis and application of cellulosic coagulant from banana peels in cadmium-spiked water

Cellulosic coagulant with low crystallinity and surface charge of -19.2 mV were extracted from wet banana peels (WBE) using kitchen-blending method. Functionalization with ferric chloride and aluminium chloride yielded higher surface charge of -23.8 mV (mWBE). Both WBE and mWBE coagulants were used to target cadmium ions from aqueous solution. Coagulants and the floccules (WBEA and mWBEA) were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, zeta sizer nano series, and SEM/EDs. The amount of cadmium ion coagulated was determined using ICP-OES. The FTIR analysis revealed the functional groups involved in the coordination and subsequent removal of the metals ions around 1634 cm-1, ascribed to the C = O vibrational band of carbonyl group. Microscopic analysis revealed that the mWBE is porous and exhibited microfibers with rod-like morphology. The effects of parameters such as the initial concentration, coagulant dosage and solution pH were investigated. Coagulation results showed that 10 mg of WBE and mWBE could remove about 80% and 90% of the Cd2+ ions respectively. However; the difference in the performance of both materials does not justify the essence of surface modification. Therefore, WBE is considered more efficient and environmentally friendly. Notwithstanding, the performance of these coagulants in real environmental samples will confirm their robustness.

Aluminum induces oxidative damage in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The mechanism of aluminum toxicity was studied in the model cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Cell growth of yeast was inhibited by aluminum. The spot assay showed that the mechanism of aluminum detoxification in yeast cells was different from that of heavy metal cadmium. After treatment with aluminum, intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species, protein carbonyl, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were dramatically increased. Meanwhile, the percentage of aluminum-treated cells permeable to propidium iodide was augmented significantly. These data demonstrated that aluminum toxicity was attributed to oxidative stress in yeast, and it induced oxidative damage by causing lipid peroxidation, injuring cell membrane integrity. Moreover, aluminum triggered the antioxidant defense system in the cells. Glutathione levels were found to be decreased, while activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase were increased after treatment with aluminum. Additionally, an oxidative-stress-related mutation sensitivity assay showed that aluminum-induced yeast oxidative stress was closely related to glutathione. These data demonstrated that the oxidative damage caused by aluminum was different from that of hydrogen peroxide, in yeast. Aluminum could cause DNA damage, and aluminum toxicity was associated with sulfhydryl groups, such as glutathione, while it was independent of YAP1.

Fabrication of Polytetrafluoroethylene Coated Micron Aluminium with Enhanced Oxidation

Aluminium (Al) powders of micron size are widely applied to energetic materials as a high energy fuel. However, its energy conversion efficiency is generally low due to low oxidation activity. In this paper, a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating layer with both protection and activation action was successfully introduced onto the surface of Al via adsorption and following heat treatment. The preparation conditions were optimized and the thermal activity of this core-shell composite material was studied. The potential enhancement mechanism for Al oxidation was proposed. The results showed that PTFE powders deformed into membrane on the surface of Al after the sintering process. This polymer shell could act as an effective passivation layer protecting internal Al from oxidation during aging. The reduction in metallic Al of Al/PTFE was decreased by 84.7%, more than that in original spherical Al when the aging time is 60 days. Moreover, PTFE could react with Al resulting in a thin AlF₃ layer, which could promote the destruction of Al₂O₃ shell. Thus, PTFE could enhance oxidation activity of micro-Al. The conversion of Al was increased by a factor of 1.8 when heated to 1100 °C. Improved aging-resistant performance and promoted oxidation activity of Al could potentially broaden its application in the field of energetic materials.
