Distinct response patterns of plants and soil microorganisms to agronomic practices and seasonal variation in a floodplain ecosystem

Introduction

Climate change and anthropogenic activities are the greatest threats to floodplain ecosystems. A growing body of literature shows that floodplain ecosystems have experienced increased chemical fertilizer and pesticide loads, which will disturb the above and belowground ecosystems. However, we lack knowledge regarding the effects of such human activities on the vegetation and soil microbiomes in these ecosystems.

Methods

In the present study, plant functional traits and Illumina Mi-Seq sequencing were to assess the impact of nitrogen fertilizer and glyphosate addition on the structure and function of the vegetation and soil microbiomes (bacteria, fungi, and protists) in a floodplain ecosystem, and to assess the influence of seasonal variation.

Results

We identified distinct response mechanisms of plant and microbial communities to the addition of nitrogen fertilizer and glyphosate, and seasonal variation. Nitrogen fertilizer and glyphosate significantly affected plant diversity, aboveground and underground biomass, and C and N content and significantly changed the leaf area and plant stature of dominant plants. However, the addition of nitrogen fertilizer and glyphosate did not significantly affect the diversity and structure of bacterial, fungal, and protist communities. The application of nitrogen fertilizer could improve the negative effects of glyphosate on the functional traits of plant communities. The seasonal variation of floodplain has significantly changed the soil's physical, chemical, and biological properties. Our results showed that compared with that in summer, the soil ecosystem multifunctionality of the floodplain ecosystem in autumn was significantly lower. Seasonal variation had a significant effect on plant diversity and functional traits. Moreover, seasonal variation significantly affected the community compositions, diversity, and structure of bacteria, fungi, and protists. Seasonal variation had a stronger impact on fungal community assembly than on that of bacteria and protists. In summer, the assembly of the fungal community was dominated by a deterministic process, while in autumn, it is dominated by a stochastic process. In addition, the negative association among bacteria, fungi, and protists has been strengthened in autumn and formed a more robust network to cope with external changes.

Discussion

These results extended our understanding of the ecological patterns of soil microbiomes in floodplain ecosystems and provided support for enhancing the ecological barrier function and the service potential of floodplain ecosystems.

Impact of seasonal variation on four labdane-type diterpenoids in Coleus forskholii Briq

The present study has been planned to evaluate the impact of seasonal variation in labdane-type diterpenoids namely isoforskolin, forskolin, 1,9-dideoxyforskolin and 1-deoxyforskolin in Coleus forskholii (roots). The plant samples were harvested in different seasons from our experimental field located at CSIR-NBRI garden, Lucknow (India) and metabolite contents were estimated through validated high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) method. The HPTLC plate was developed in tertiary mobile phase of toluene-ethyl acetate-methanol (8.5-1-0.05 v/v) for separation of all the four metabolites. The metabolite content viz. isoforskolin, forskolin, 1,9-dideoxyforskolin and 1-deoxyforskolin varies from 0.0247% to 0.198%, 0.238 to 0.730%, 0.056 to 0.161% and 0.0401 to 0.332% on dry weight basis respectively. The maximum content of metabolites was recorded in winter season and was found optimum for harvesting of C. forskholii roots. Optimization of harvesting season for this industrially valuable medicinal plant will lead to sustainable sources of good quality raw material to herbal drug industry.

The Level of Selected Blood Parameters in Young Soccer Players in Relation to the Concentration of 25(OH)D at the Beginning and End of Autumn

This study aimed to demonstrate the changes of selected blood parameters in relation to 25(OH)D concentration during the autumn period in young soccer players. A total of 35 participants’ results (age: 17.5 ± 0.6 years, body mass 71.3 ± 6.9 kg) were tested twice: in mid-September and in mid-December and divided into subgroups with regard to two criteria. First, according to the initial level of the 25(OH)D concentration (optimal group—ODG, suboptimal group—SDG), second, according to drops in 25(OH)D concentration (high drop group—HDG, low drop group—LDG). A significant decrease (p < 0.001) in the 25(OH)D concentration was reported in the total group (TGr) and in all subgroups. Blood parameters such as white blood cells, red blood cells, haemoglobin and haematocrit increased significantly (p < 0.05) in TGr during the analysed period of time. The analysis of changes in the lipid profile did not expose significant differences except triglycerides. The asparagine amino transferase and creatine kinase activity decreased significantly after autumn in all analysed groups. The declining level of 25(OH)D concentration should be compensated (e.g., with vitamin D supplementation) during autumn. Applied training loads could also influence the blood parameters variability in young soccer players. Regular measurements of 25(OH)D concentration are helpful in identifying potential drops and allows for the preparation of individual supplementation plans for the players.

Statistical analysis, source apportionment, and toxicity of particulate- and gaseous-phase PAHs in the urban atmosphere

Introduction

The concentrations of particulate and gaseous Polycyclic Hydrocarbons Carbon (PAHs) were determined in the urban atmosphere of Delhi in different seasons (winter, summer, and monsoon).

Methodology

The samples were collected using instrument air metric (particulate phase) and charcoal tube (gaseous phase) and analyzed through Gas chromatography. The principal component and correlation were used to identify the sources of particulate and gaseous PAHs during different seasons.

Results and discussion

The mean concentration of the sum of total PAHs (TPAHs) for particulate and gaseous phases at all the sites were found to be higher in the winter season (165.14 ± 50.44 ng/m3 and 65.73 ± 16.84 ng/m3) than in the summer season (134.08 ± 35.0 ng/m3 and 43.43 ± 9.59 ng/m3), whereas in the monsoon season the concentration was least (68.15 ± 18.25 ng/m3 and 37.63 1 13.62 ng/m3). The principal component analysis (PCA) results revealed that seasonal variations of PAHs accounted for over 86.9%, 84.5%, and 94.5% for the summer, monsoon, and winter seasons, respectively. The strong and positive correlation coefficients were observed between B(ghi)P and DahA (0.922), B(a)P and IcdP (0.857), and B(a)P and DahA (0.821), which indicated the common source emissions of PAHs. In addition to this, the correlation between Nap and Flu, Flu and Flt, B(a)P, and IcdP showed moderate to high correlation ranging from 0.68 to 0.75 for the particulate phase PAHs. The carcinogenic health risk values for gaseous and particulate phase PAHs at all sites were calculated to be 4.53 × 10-6, 2.36 × 10-5 for children, and 1.22 × 10-5, 6.35 × 10-5 for adults, respectively. The carcinogenic health risk for current results was found to be relatively higher than the prescribed standard of the Central Pollution Control Board, India (1.0 × 10-6).

Seasonal variation of airborne fungal diversity and community structure in urban outdoor environments in Tianjin, China

Airborne fungi are ubiquitous in human living environments and may be a source of respiratory problems, allergies, and other health issues. A 12 months study was performed to investigate the diversity, concentration and community structure of culturable airborne fungi in different outdoor environments of Tianjin City, using an HAS-100B air sampler. A total of 1,015 fungal strains belonging to 175 species and 82 genera of Ascomycota 92.5%, Basidiomycota 7%, and Mucoromycota 0.3% were isolated and identified using morphological and molecular analysis. The most abundant fungal genera were Alternaria 35%, Cladosporium 18%, Penicillium 5.6%, Talaromyces 3.9%, Didymella 3%, and Aspergillus 2.8%, while the most frequently occurring species were A. alternata (24.7%), C. cladosporioides (11%), A. tenuissima (5.3%), P. oxalicum (4.53%), and T. funiculosus (2.66%). The fungal concentration ranged from 0 to 340 CFU/m³ during the whole study. Environmental factors, including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and air pressure exerted a varying effect on the presence and concentration of different fungal taxa. The four analyzed seasons showed significantly different airborne fungal communities, which were more strongly influenced by air temperature and relative humidity in spring and summer, whereas wind speed and air pressure had a stronger effect in autumn and winter. Fungal communities from green and busy sites did not show significant differences over the four analyzed seasons, which may be due to the effect of the surrounding environments characterized by high human activities on the air of the relatively small parks present in Tianjin. The present study provided valuable information on the seasonal dynamics and the environmental factors shaping the diversity and concentration of the analyzed outdoor airborne fungal communities, which can be of help for air quality monitoring, microbial contamination control, and health risk assessment in urban environments.

Seasonal fluctuations attenuate stimulatory or inhibitory impacts of colonial birds on abundance, structure and diversity of soil biota

Soil microorganisms and free-living nematodes were investigated in association with the nesting and roosting habitats of the following piscivorous and omnivorous colonial birds: black kite (Milvus migrans), great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) and little egret (Egretta garzetta), in Israel's Mediterranean region. Abiotic variables, abundance, trophic structure, sex ratio and genus diversity of soil free-living nematodes, and total abundance of bacteria and fungi, were measured during the wet season, following our previous study conducted during the dry season. The observed soil properties were important drivers of soil biota structure. Presence of the most efficient elements for soil organisms, such as phosphorus and nitrogen, was strongly dependent on the diet of the compared piscivorous and omnivorous bird colonies; levels of these nutrients were notably higher in the bird habitats than in their respective control sites during the study period. Ecological indices showed that the different species of colonial birds can have different (stimulatory or inhibitory) impacts on abundance and diversity of the soil biota, affecting the structure of the soil free-living nematode population at the generic, trophic and sexual levels during the wet season. A comparison with results from the dry season illustrated that seasonal fluctuations can change, and even attenuate the effect of bird activity on the abundance, structure and diversity of the soil communities.

Spatial and Temporal Volatility of PM2.5, PM10 and PM10-Bound B[a]P Concentrations and Assessment of the Exposure of the Population of Silesia in 2018-2021

Air pollution both indoors and outdoors is a major cause of various diseases and premature deaths. Negative health effects are more frequently observed in a number of European countries characterized by significant pollution. In Poland, especially in Upper Silesia, the most serious problem is the high concentration of particulate matter (PM) and PM10-bound benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P). The main source of these two pollutants is so-called "low emissions" associated with the burning of solid fuels mainly in domestic boilers and liquid fuels in road traffic. This study examined the variability in the PM and PM10-bound B[a]P concentrations and their relationships with meteorological parameters, i.e., atmospheric pressure, air temperature and wind speed, in 2018-2021 at 11 monitoring stations. In many Silesian cities, the average annual concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and B[a]P were much higher than those recorded in other European countries. At each station, the average daily PM10 concentrations were exceeded on 12 to 126 days a year. Taking into account the WHO recommendation for PM2.5, the highest recorded average daily concentration exceeded the permissible level by almost 40 times. The same relationships were observed in all measurement years: PM10 concentrations were negatively correlated with air temperature (R = -0.386) and wind speed (R = -0.614). The highest concentrations were observed in the temperature range from -15 °C to -5 °C, when the wind speed did not exceed 0.5 m·s^-1. The calculated lifetime cancer risk (LCR) associated with the exposure to B[a]P in the Silesian Voivodeship suggested 30-429 cases per 1 million people in the heating season depending on the scenario used for the calculations (IRIS, EPA or WHO).

Seasonal Variation Characteristics and the Factors Affecting Plankton Community Structure in the Yitong River, China

To explore how environmental factors affected the plankton structure in the Yitong River, we surveyed the water environmental factors and plankton population in different seasons. The results showed high total nitrogen concentrations in Yitong River throughout the year, while the total phosphorus, water temperature (WT), and chemical oxygen demand in summer were significantly higher than those in other seasons (p < 0.05), and the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations and TN/TP ratio were significantly lower (p < 0.01) than those in other seasons. There was no significant seasonal change in other environmental factors. Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, and Bacillariophyta were the main phytoplankton phylum, while Protozoa and Rotifera were the main zooplankton phylum. The abundance and biomass of zooplankton and phytoplankton in the summer were higher than those in other seasons. Non-Metric Multidimensional scaling methods demonstrated obvious seasonal variation of phytoplankton in summer compared to spring and winter, while the seasonal variation of the zooplankton community was not obvious. The results of the redundancy analysis showed that WT, DO and nitrate nitrogen were the main environmental factors affecting phytoplankton abundance. In contrast to environmental factors, phytoplankton was the main factor driving the seasonal variation of the zooplankton community structure. Cyanophyta were positively correlated with the changes in the plankton community.

Seasonal patterns of rhizosphere microorganisms suggest carbohydrate-degrading and nitrogen-fixing microbes contribute to the attribute of full-year shooting in woody bamboo Cephalostachyum pingbianense

Compared with the ordinary single-season shooting among woody bamboos in Poaceae, the attribute of full-year shooting in Cephalostachyum pingbianense represents a unique shooting type or mechanism. Nevertheless, except for the overall physiological mechanism, the effect of ecological factors, especially soil microorganisms, on this full-year shooting characteristic remains unclear. In this study, 16S rRNA and ITS rRNA genes were sequenced using the Illumina platform. Our aims were to detect the seasonal changes in rhizospheric microbial communities of C. pingbianense and to discover the correlations of soil microbes with soil properties and bamboo shoot productivity. The results showed that seasonal change had no significant effect on bacterial alpha diversity, but significantly affected bacterial and fungal community structures as well as fungal richness. Among all soil properties examined, soil temperature, soil moisture and organic matter were the predominant factors affecting bacterial community diversity and structure. Soil temperature and soil moisture also significantly influenced fungal community structure, while available phosphorus had the greatest effect on fungal diversity. In each season, bacterial genera Acidothermus, Roseiarcus, and Bradyrhizobium, along with fungal genera Saitozyma, Mortierella, Trichoderma, etc., were dominant in bacterial and fungal communities, respectively. Bacterial community functions in four seasons were dominated by chemoheterotrophy, cellulolysis, and nitrogen fixation. Saprotrophic fungi occupied a high proportion in soil samples of all seasons. In addition, correlation analysis revealed that the bamboo shoot productivity was positively correlated with multiple microbial taxa involved in carbon and nitrogen cycles. It is proposed that highly abundant microbes involved in carbohydrate degradation and nitrogen fixation in the rhizosphere soil may contribute to the attribute of producing bamboo shoots all year round in C. pingbianense. This study is among the few cases revealing the connection between bamboo shooting characteristics and soil microorganisms, and provides new physiological and ecological insights into the forest management of woody bamboos.

Seasonal variation of ambulatory blood pressure in Chinese hypertensive adolescents

BACKGROUND

Blood pressure (BP) exhibits seasonal variation with lower levels at higher temperatures and vice versa. This phenomenon affects both sexes and all age groups. So far, only a few research studies have investigated this condition in adolescents and none of them were based on hypertensive population or ever applied ambulatory blood pressure monitor (ABPM). Therefore, we carried out the first study that used ABPM to record seasonal variation of blood pressure in hypertensive adolescents.

METHODS

From March 2018 to February 2019, 649 ABPMs from hypertensive adolescents between 13 and 17 years who were referred to wear an ABPM device in Beijing and Baoding were extracted. Seasonal change in ambulatory BP value, dipping status, and prevalence of different BP phenotypes were analyzed and compared.

RESULTS

Mean age of participants was 14.9 ± 1.5 years and 65.8% of them were boys. Of the participants, 75.3% met the criteria of overweight or obesity. From summer to winter, average 24-hour, day-time, and night-time BP showed significant rise, which was 9.8/2.8, 9.8/3.0, and 10.9/3.4 mmHg, respectively. This seasonal effect on BP was not dependent on the obesity degree. In addition, higher prevalence of nondippers and risers existed in winter while white coat hypertension was more frequent in warmer seasons.

CONCLUSION

Hypertensive adolescents showed evident seasonal change in their ABPM results, which was featured by elevated BP level and more frequent abnormal dipping patterns in winter. On the contrary, higher prevalence of white coat hypertension was found in warmer seasons. Physicians should take seasonal variation into consideration when managing adolescent hypertension.

The Influence of the Reduction in Clay Sediments in the Level of Metals Bioavailability-An Investigation in Liujiang River Basin after Wet Season

The seasonal elevation of metals' bioavailability can aggravate the threat of metal contamination in the aquatic environment. Nevertheless, their regulations have rarely been studied, particularly the connections between metals' transformation and environmental variations. Therefore, the catchment area of Liujiang River was taken as an example in this study, their seasonal variations in metals' bioavailability in sediments, especially during the wet season, was investigated to recover the processes associated with metals' speciations and multiple environmental factors. The results revealed that the concentration of metals in sediments were high overall in the wet season, but low in the dry season. The significantly reduced ratio of metals in non-residual forms was largely related to the overall reduction in metals in oxidizable and reducible forms after the wet season. However, the elevated BI indexes of most metals suggested their increased bioavailability in the dry season, which should be closely related to their corresponding elevations in carbonate-bound and exchangeable forms after the wet season. The variations in metals' bioavailability were primarily related to their predominance of exchangeable and carbonate-bound form. The higher correlation coefficients suggested the destabilization of the oxidizable form should be treated as a critical approach to the impact of metals' bioavailability after the wet season. In view of that, sediments' coarsening would pose the impacts on the destabilization of exogenous metals in sediments, the reduction in clay sediments should be responsible for the elevation of metals bioavailability after the wet season. Therefore, the monitoring of metals' bioavailability in sediments should be indispensable to prevent metal contamination from enlarging the scope of their threat to the aquatic environment of the river, especially after the wet season.

Seasonal Diversity and Occurrence of Filamentous Fungi in Smallholder Dairy Cattle Feeds and Feedstuffs in South Africa

This study investigated 65 (35 in summer and 30 in winter) smallholder dairy cattle feeds from Free State and Limpopo provinces in South Africa from 2018 to 2019 for fungal contamination and assessed the impacts of seasonal variation on fungal contamination levels, isolation frequency, and diversity. Samples were examined for fungal contamination using macro- and microscopic approaches, and their identities were confirmed by molecular means. A total of 217 fungal isolates from 14 genera, including Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Penicillium, were recovered from feeds from both seasons. The most prevalent fungal species recovered were A. fumigatus and P. crustosum. Mycological analyses showed that 97% of samples were contaminated with one or more fungal isolates, with the summer fungal mean level (6.1 × 103 to 3.0 × 106 CFU/g) higher than that of feeds sampled during winter (mean level: 1.1 × 103 to 4.1 × 105 CFU/g). Independent sample t-test revealed that the isolation frequencies of the genera Aspergillus and Fusarium were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher in summer than winter, while Penicillium prevalence in both seasons was not statistically (p > 0.05) different. Furthermore, the Shannon−Weiner diversity index (H′) revealed a higher fungal diversity in summer (H′ = 2.8) than in winter (H′ = 2.1). This study on fungal contamination could be used for future fungal control and mycotoxin risk management in South Africa.

[Spatiotemporal Characteristics of Dissolved Oxygen and Control Mechanism of Hypoxia (Low Oxygen) in the Watershed-Coastal System in Fujian Province]

Dissolved oxygen is a key parameter to measure water environment quality and ecosystem health. Currently, the problem of hypoxia (low oxygen) is prominent in coastal areas in China, but there is a lack of research on the spatiotemporal characteristics of dissolved oxygen and the control mechanism of hypoxia in the watershed-coastal system. Based on the data of 135 surface water (including estuaries) and 66 coastal water monitoring sites in Fujian Province from 2011 to 2020, this study analyzed the spatiotemporal variation pattern of dissolved oxygen at seasonal and interannual time scales. The data of hypoxia (10% quantile, corresponding to 67% saturation) were selected to study the characteristics and control mechanism of hypoxia in four types of water bodies (i.e., rivers, reservoirs, estuaries, and coastal waters) using mathematical statistics and a random forest model. The results showed that the dissolved oxygen saturation was the highest in the coast[(98.2±10.2)%] and the lowest in the estuary[(79.2±17.9)%]. Compared with that in the 12^th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), the frequency of hypoxia detection in rivers and reservoirs in the 13^th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) was significantly reduced, but the change in estuaries was not significant. Counting the points with hypoxia detection, the multi-year average hypoxia detection frequency of rivers and reservoirs was highest in autumn, and the frequency of estuaries was highest in summer. Hypoxia in reservoirs and estuaries was the most prominent but with different mechanisms. Specifically, hypoxia in reservoir reaches was related to summer runoff carrying large amounts of organic matter input, stratification leading to continuous oxygen depletion in the bottom water, and vertical mixing or discharge through dams in autumn, whereas hypoxia in estuaries was associated with strong pollution inputs and reductive materials. Systematic management and regionalized control mechanisms need to be established to further strengthen watershed-coastal pollution abatement to help mitigate eutrophication and hypoxia problems.

Forensic anthropology casework at the Cook County Illinois Medical Examiner's Office, Chicago, IL, 2012-2022

Forensic anthropology has grown in recent years with increased methodological standardization, technical advancements, and increasing numbers of academic institutions offering coursework and programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. However, few practicing forensic anthropologists publish the composition of their casework, resulting in limited understanding of the true mechanics of the field by academics and forensic professionals. This study reports on forensic anthropology casework at the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office between March 2012 and February 2022. A total of 132 cases were evaluated. Results indicate that peak months of discovery were June (n = 19) and September (n = 17), with the fewest in January (n = 5). Most discovery contexts were outdoor surface recoveries (n = 55) and were fully skeletonized (n = 47). The majority of consultation requests consisted of biological profile estimation (n = 99). An average of 77.1 days elapsed from discovery to anthropology consult, 60.3 days from consultation to anthropological analysis, and 14.1 days from analysis to report submission. Assessment of the data indicates that the impact of seasonal variation, changing Medical Examiner personnel, as well as the complexity of cases influence forensic anthropology casework in Cook County. Report and discussion of forensic anthropologists' casework strengthens our understanding of the field, allows for the formulation of best practices, and serves as data upon which decisions regarding protocol, funding, resources, and need can be based. With additional practitioners collecting and sharing their data, a clearer understanding of the scope and utility of the field will be appreciated by colleagues and the greater forensic scientific community.

Regional differences and seasonal variation of the burden of skin diseases in southern Germany: a retrospective analysis of internet data

Background

Skin diseases are associated with a considerable burden for patients and their relatives. Not every affected individual, however, seeks medical health care and their families are often forgotten, which makes it challenging to identify all unmet needs.

Objectives

This study aimed to identify regional differences and seasonal variations related to dermatology via an internet search and further investigate whether regional factors influence search behaviour.

Materials & Methods

A retrospective longitudinal study using Google Ads Keyword Planner was carried out to identify skin disease-related terms throughout Bavaria, southern Germany, from June 2015 to May 2019. Terms were categorized and assessed for regional and seasonal differences.

Results

From 976 human skin-related terms, with a total search volume of 9,928,630 queries, 7,988,220 referred to "human skin disease", with a higher search volume in rural compared to urban areas (p = 0.012). Search queries for "allergy" and "human skin diseases" displayed significant seasonality (p>0.001 and p = 0.002, respectively).

Conclusion

Future monitoring and assessment of this type of Google data for predefined regional areas could identify specific medical needs and provide timed and targetgroup-oriented medical care and information. These could be beneficial for affected people, their family members, physicians, and public health officials.

Seasonal Effects on Hospitalizations Due to Mood and Psychotic Disorders: A Nationwide 31-Year Register Study

Purpose

To examine seasonal patterns of hospital admissions due to mood and psychotic disorders and to investigate whether the admission rates show variation according to the seasonal daylength (photoperiods).

Patients and Methods

A retrospective nationwide register-based cohort of all psychiatric admissions (N=978,079) during 1987–2017 in Finland was utilized. The smoothed time-series of adjusted ratio of observed and expected (O/E) daily counts were estimated to examine seasonal variation. The mean O/E with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was used to study the admission rates by photoperiods. The calendar days were classified into the 71-day photoperiods based on the daylength (long/summer, short/winter, equal/spring, equal/fall) and the pace of change in daylength (slowly/rapidly increasing/decreasing daylength).

Results

Manic episodes peaked in summer during the long (mean O/E=1.10, 95% CI=1.06–1.13) and slowly decreasing (1.09, 1.06–1.13) photoperiods and had a nadir in winter during the slowly increasing (0.93, 0.89–0.98) photoperiod. Admissions for unipolar depressive (UPD) episodes peaked in autumn and in spring at the end of the rapidly decreasing (1.03, 1.02–1.04) and increasing (1.03, 1.01–1.04) photoperiod, and dropped in summer during the long and slowly decreasing (0.95, 0.94–0.96) photoperiods. Bipolar depressive (BPD) and mixed episodes signaled excess admissions in autumn and in spring. Admissions for schizophrenia were higher than expected from summer to early-autumn, during the long and slowly decreasing photoperiods (1.02, 1.02–1.03), and lower than expected in other seasons, especially in mid-spring during the rapidly increasing photoperiod (0.98, 0.98–0.99).

Conclusion

The study indicates the seasonality and photoperiodicity of mental disorders, especially for manic episodes. The seasonal pattern is similar between schizophrenia and manic episodes, and between UPD, BPD, and mixed episodes.

Seasonal variations and risk factors of Streptococcus pyogenes infection: a multicenter research network study

Background:

Streptococcus pyogenes, or Group A Streptococcus (GAS), causes acute pharyngitis and necrotizing fasciitis. Seasonal variations in GAS infections are not robustly characterized. We assessed seasonal variations and risk factors of GAS pharyngitis and ICD-10-diagnosed necrotizing fasciitis.

Methods:

From the period 2010–2019, we conducted a case–control study using laboratory-confirmed cases of GAS pharyngitis and a descriptive observational study of necrotizing fasciitis using ICD-10 codes. Data were collected from TriNetX, a federated research network. We extracted seasonal (quarterly) incidence rates. We used an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to assess seasonal variations. Demographic characteristics and 1-month outcomes were compared among adults with or without GAS pharyngitis.

Results:

We identified 224,471 adults with GAS pharyngitis (test-positive) and 546,142 adults without it (test-negative). GAS pharyngitis adults were younger (25.3 versus 30.2 years of age, p < 0.0001), more likely to be Hispanic individuals (10% versus 8%, p < 0.0001) and slightly more likely to be Black or African American individuals (14% versus 13%, p < 0.0001). Propensity score matching found that adults with test-positive cases of GAS pharyngitis had a higher risk of acute rheumatic fever while having no significant differences in risk of intensive care unit admission and mortality compared with test-negative cases. GAS pharyngitis average incidence peaked in the winter while dipping in the summer (0.32 versus 0.18 and 4.07 versus 1.78 per 1000 adults and pediatric patients, respectively). Necrotizing fasciitis diagnoses were highest during summer (0.032 per 1000 adults). There was a significant ARIMA seasonal variation in the time series analysis for adult and pediatric GAS pharyngitis (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.014, respectively). Necrotizing fasciitis diagnosis was not associated with seasonal variation (p = 0.861).

Conclusion:

Peaks in GAS pharyngitis occur in the winter months. ICD code–based necrotizing fasciitis did not show a quarterly seasonal variation.

Seasonal Variation of Peritonsillar Abscess Presentation to an Emergency Department in an Atlantic Canadian Climate: A Retrospective Review

OBJECTIVES

Patients with a peritonsillar abscess (PTA) often present to emergency departments as the first point of medical contact. Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are more frequent in the winter. Therefore, we hypothesize that the incidence of PTAs will be more frequent in colder winter months as well. This is the first study assessing the seasonal variation and epidemiology of PTA presentations to an emergency department in Atlantic Canada, home to a unique maritime climate.

METHODS

A retrospective cohort study was conducted through a chart review of all patients who presented to the Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2020. Patient characteristics, treatment, and microbiology were reported. A chi-square goodness-of-fit test assessed the seasonal variation of PTA. Pearson correlations assessed PTA incidence per mean monthly temperature and humidity.

RESULTS

A total of 75 patients were included. 57.3% were male and 42.7% were female, with a mean age (±SD) of 35.9 ± 14.0. Most patients presented afebrile (82.7%, cutoff ≥ 38.0°C). Approximately half of all patients had an elevated WBC count (49.3%, cutoff ≥ 10.9 × 10⁹). The most common bacteria isolated were Streptococcus species followed by anaerobic bacteria (17.9%). No significant variation was found with respect to season (X²(3) = 1.0, P = .801), temperature (r(70) = 0.198, P = .096), or humidity, (r(70) = 0.063, P = .599).

CONCLUSION

This study did not find a seasonal variation of PTA in a maritime climate. These findings question the anecdotal hypothesis that PTA is associated with progression from acute URTIs and therefore would be more common in the winter months.

Forest Management Practice Influences Bird Diversity in the Mid-Hills of Nepal

Forest management practice plays a critical role in conserving biodiversity. However, there are few studies on how forest management practice affects bird communities. Here, we compare the effectiveness of the Panchase Protection Forest (PPF; protected forest with government administration) and the Tibrekot Community Forest (TCF; community forest with community forest users' group administration) in hosting bird diversity in the mid-hills of Nepal. We examined 96 point count stations during summer and winter in 2019 and recorded 160 species of birds with three globally threatened vultures (red-headed vulture Sarcogyps calvus, slender-billed vulture Gyps tenuirostris, and white-rumped vulture Gyps bengalensis). Forest management practice, season, and elevation all influenced the richness and abundance of birds. The diversity, richness, and abundance of birds and the most common feeding guilds (insectivore, omnivore, and carnivore) were higher in TCF than in PPF; however, globally threatened species were only recorded in PPF. We also recorded a higher bird species turnover (beta diversity) in TCF than in PPF. Our study indicates that community-managed forests can also provide quality habitats similar to those of protected forests managed by the government, and provide refuge to various bird species and guilds. However, we recommend more comparative studies in other tropical and sub-tropical areas to understand how different forest management practices influence bird diversity.

[Soil respiration rate and its influencing factors in artificial land-bridge islands system]

It is of great significance to understand the pattern of soil respiration rate in fragmented forests for further revealing terrestrial ecosystem carbon cycling. With different habitats (island vs. mainland, island edge vs. island interior) of the artificial land-bridge island system in Thousand Island Lake (TIL) region as the objects, we analyzed the seasonal dynamics of soil respiration rate and its relationships with soil physicochemical factors. The results showed that: 1) Soil respiration rates varied significantly across different seasons, with an order of summer (3.74 μmol·m^-2·s^-1) &gt; autumn (2.30 μmol·m^-2·s^-1) &gt; spring (1.82 μmol·m^-2·s^-1) &gt; winter (1.40 μmol·m^-2·s^-1). 2) Forest fragmentation had significant effects on soil respiration rate, with soil respiration rate of island (2.37 μmol·m^-2·s^-1) being significantly higher than that of mainland (2.08 μmol·m^-2·s^-1) and the soil respiration rate of island edge (2.46 μmol·m^-2·s^-1) being significantly higher than that of island interior (2.03 μmol·m^-2·s^-1). 3) Soil temperature significantly promoted soil respiration rate, explaining 56.1% of the total variation. 4) There was a significant positive correlation between soil respiration rate and soil total carbon, ammo-nium nitrogen content, and vegetation coverage. The soil total carbon and ammonium nitrogen content of island edge were significantly higher than those of island interior. In all, forest fragmentation promoted soil respiration rate, with soil physicochemical factors as the drivers for its variation.

Seasonal variation, treatment outcome, and its associated factors among the snakebite patients in Somali region, Ethiopia

Background

Snakebite is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in many areas, particularly in the rural tropics, and is a major public health problem around the world. It also imposes significant economic burdens on snakebite victims due to treatment-related expenses and lost productivity.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to assess seasonal variation, treatment outcomes, and its associated factors among snakebite in Denan health center in the Somali region, Ethiopia.

Method

A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from 10 to 30 September 2020 in Denan health center, Somali region, Ethiopia. All snakebite cases in Denan health center from 1 September 2015 to 31 August 2020 were included. Data were collected using a pre-tested structured checklist from the patient cards. Data were entered into EpiData version 3.1 and analyzed using SPSS version 22 (IBM SPSS Statistics, 2013). The prevalence was reported by proportion with 95% confidence interval (CI) and summary measures. Predictors were assessed using a multivariable logistic regression analysis model and reported using an adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI. Statistical significance was declared at p-value < 0. 05.

Result

The overall prevalence of poor outcome of venomous snakebites was 31.4% (95% CI 26.3% 35.4%). Study participants with an age of less than 10 years old (AOR = 2.01; 95% CI 1.39, 4.05), age between 10 and 30 years old (AOR = 2.06; 95% CI 1.39, 9.30), arrival times greater than or equal to 6 hours (AOR = 2.37; 95% CI 1.39, 4.05), and timing of snakebite (AOR = 0.49; 95% CI 0.31-0.87) were factors found to be significantly associated with poor treatment outcome.

Conclusion

According to this study, about one in every three snakebite patients have a poor outcome. Patients with poor outcomes were those who did not improve as a result of treatment or died as a result of it. Designing appropriate engagement of public health education about snakebite prevention techniques, particularly during entry and exit of rainy seasons and establishment of appropriate case management protocol is strongly recommended, as well as increasing the accessibility or availability of antivenoms will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the reduction of mortality and disability related to that of the snakebites.

Investigating the Variation of Benzene and 1,3-Butadiene in the UK during 2000-2020

The concentrations of benzene and 1,3-butadiene in urban, suburban, and rural sites of the U.K. were investigated across 20 years (2000-2020) to assess the impacts of pollution control strategies. Given the known toxicity of these pollutants, it is necessary to investigate national long-term trends across a range of site types. We conclude that whilst legislative intervention has been successful in reducing benzene and 1,3-butadiene pollution from vehicular sources, previously overlooked sources must now be considered as they begin to dominate in contribution to ambient pollution. Benzene concentrations in urban areas were found to be ~5-fold greater than those in rural areas, whilst 1,3-butadiene concentrations were up to ~10-fold greater. The seasonal variation of pollutant concentration exhibited a maximum in the winter and a minimum in the summer with summer: winter ratios of 1:2.5 and 1:1.6 for benzene and 1,3-butadiene, respectively. Across the period investigated (2000-2020), the concentrations of benzene decreased by 85% and 1,3-butadiene concentrations by 91%. A notable difference could be seen between the two decades studied (2000-2010, 2010-2020) with a significantly greater drop evident in the first decade than in the second, proving, whilst previously successful, legislative interventions are no longer sufficiently limiting ambient concentrations of these pollutants. The health impacts of these pollutants are discussed, and cancer impact indices were utilized allowing estimation of cancer impacts across the past 20 years for different site types. Those particularly vulnerable to the adverse health effects of benzene and 1,3-butadiene pollution are discussed.

[Characteristics of Carbonaceous Species in PM2.5 in Chengdu Under the Background of Emission Reduction]

The Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan and Three-year Plan on Defending the Blue Sky promulgated by the State Council of the People's Republic of China have played an important role in the overall improvement of air quality in China. However, few studies have evaluated the implementation effects of these two policies in Sichuan Basin and the new characteristics of PM_2.5 chemical components after the implementation of these policies. The key periods for evaluating the implementation effects of these two pollution reduction policies are 2017 and 2020, respectively. In order to study the atmospheric PM_2.5 and carbonaceous species in Chengdu during these two periods, this study sampled the PM_2.5 in Chengdu from October 2016 to July 2017 and December 2020, respectively, and the organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) were analyzed. The results showed that the annual ρ(PM_2.5) from 2016-2017 in Chengdu was (114.0±76.4) μg·m^-3. The maximum value of the ρ(PM_2.5) appeared in winter[(193.3±98.5) μg·m^-3], and the minimum value appeared in spring[(73.8±32.3) μg·m^-3]. By contrast, the ρ(PM_2.5) in winter decreased significantly in 2020, with a value of (96.0±39.3) μg·m^-3. The annual ρ(OC) and ρ(EC) from 2016-2017 were (21.1±16.4) μg·m^-3 and (1.9±1.3) μg·m^-3, which accounted for 18.5% and 1.7% of the PM_2.5 mass, respectively. The seasonal variation characteristic of ρ(OC) was:winter[(40.6±21.5) μg·m^-3]>autumn[(17.0±7.0) μg·m^-3]>summer[(14.4±3.9) μg·m^-3]>spring[(12.6±6.0) μg·m^-3], whereas the ρ(EC) in the four seasons were close, ranging from 1.3 to 2.4 μg·m^-3. The annual ρ(SOC) was (9.4±9.1) μg·m^-3, which accounted for 44.5% of the OC mass. Compared with that in winter 2016, the ρ(OC) decreased by 52.7% in winter 2020, whereas the ρ(EC) increased by 26.1%. With the aggravation of pollution, the change trends of carbon species and their contributions were different. Compared with that in winter 2016, the variation in the contribution of OC with the aggravation of pollution in winter 2020 was more stable, whereas the proportion of SOC increased more obviously. There were obvious differences in the direction of air masses and the potential source area of pollutants in each season. Although there was no significant change in the direction of air masses in winter 2020 compared with those in winter 2016, the pollutant concentrations corresponding to each cluster decreased significantly, and the potential source area of pollutants expanded significantly to the eastern area.

The Kuroshio Regulates the Air-Sea Exchange of PCBs in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean

Calculating accurate air-sea fluxes for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is an essential condition for evaluating their transport in the atmosphere. A three-dimensional hydrodynamic-ecosystem-PCB coupled model was developed for the northwestern Pacific Ocean to assess the air-sea fluxes of four PCBs and examine the influences of ocean currents on the fluxes. The model revealed a fine structure in the air-sea flux that is sensitive to the Kuroshio, a western boundary current with a high surface speed. Intense downward and upward fluxes (-23.6 to 44.75 ng m^-2 d^-1 for ∑₄PCBs) can be found in the Kuroshio region south of Japan and the Kuroshio Extension east of Japan, respectively. In strong (weak) current regions, it takes ∼4 and ∼1 days (1-3 and 3-12 days) for dissolved PCBs to reach an equilibrium in scenarios where only air-sea exchange or only ocean advection is considered, respectively. In strong current regions, the ocean advection has a shorter response time than the air-sea exchange, indicating that dissolved PCBs from upstream carried by strong current can easily change the downstream concentration by disrupting the equilibrium with original air-sea exchange and induce new air-sea fluxes there. Therefore, strong western boundary currents should be correctly considered in future atmospheric transport models for PCBs.

A Review of Studies on the Seasonal Variation of Indoor Radon-222 Concentration

Due to their electrostatic nature, radon decay products can attach to solid particles and aerosols in the air. Inhalation and ingestion are therefore the two main routes through which people are exposed to radon and its decay products. During the inhalation of these radioactive aerosols, deposition takes place in different regions of the human respiratory tract. The deposited aerosols carrying radon and its progeny undergo a continuous radioactive transformation and expose the lung to ionizing alpha radiation, which can destroy the sensitive cells in the lung, causing a mutation that turns cancerous. Radon which is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless radioactive noble gas is a major health concern and is the second leading cause of lung cancer. To address this, an indoor radon survey was conducted in many countries internationally, with results showing that indoor radon concentration has a seasonal variation. This is due to the fluctuation of environmental parameters and the geological nature of buildings. Its concentration was found to be maximum in the cool (winter) season and a minimum concentration was recorded in the warm (summer) season of the year.
