Abstract
A spontaneous T-cell-rich B-cell lymphoma (TCRBCL) occurred as a subcutaneous mass in the buccal region and enlarged submandibular lymph node in a 6-year-old female cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis). The constituent cells were examined by histology, immunohistochemistry and the double labeled-immunofluorescence method (dl-IF). Further, in situ hybridization (ISH) was employed to detect the gene expression of Epstein Barr virus (EBV). Histologically, the mass was comprised mainly of neoplastic large lymphoid cells and reactive small mononuclear cells. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic large lymphoid cells were positive for CD20, CD79 alpha, MHC class II, and either IgG, IgM, or IgA. Polyclonal Ig production by the neoplastic large lymphoid cells was demonstrated by dl-IF, although IgG-positive ones predominated in number. On the other hand, most of the small mononuclear cells were positive for CD3 and were regarded as reactive T lymphocytes, while the remaining cells appeared to be histocytes or reactive B-cells. Transcripts of EBV gene were not demonstrated in these neoplastic or reactive cells by ISH. This is the first reported case of spontaneous TCRBCL in the cynomolgus monkey.

Abstract
The morbidity and immunological response to naturally acquired Schistosoma mansoni infection in a population of wild baboons ( n=28) was investigated. Serum obtained from the baboons was assayed for adult worm (SWAP) and schistosome egg (SEA)-specific immunoglobulin (Ig)G and IgM antibodies. The animals were euthanised, perfused to recover adult schistosome worms and schistosome-related pathology was assessed. Nineteen animals (68%) had high serum levels of SWAP-specific IgG antibodies and 15 (54%) had high levels of SEA-specific IgG antibodies. Nine animals (32%) had high levels of SWAP-specific IgM antibodies and six (21%) had high levels of SEA-specific IgM antibodies. Mild schistosome-related pathology was noted in 18 animals (64%). However, adult schistosome worms were recovered from only three animals (10%). The results indicate a high exposure to schistosomiasis for free-ranging baboons inhabiting an endemic area, as evidenced by the high prevalence of parasite-specific humoral antibody response. However, this high exposure is associated with low worm recovery and mild pathology. In addition, parasite-specific IgM antibodies provided a good indicator of an active schistosome infection.

Abstract
The goal of this study was to determine, for each of four dengue serotypes, whether owl monkeys (Aotus nancymae) become viremic and develop antibody responses in patterns similar to those seen in humans and whether any behavioral parameters are reliably associated with immunologic responses. A secondary goal was to investigate effects of chronic blood sampling on hematologic parameters in this genus. We inoculated 20 owl monkeys with 2 x 10(4) plaque-forming units of one of four dengue serotypes. Blood samples ranging from 0.4 to 0.7 ml per animal were taken each day for 12 consecutive days after inoculation, as well as on days 21, 28, and 60 post-inoculation. The total amount of blood taken per monkey was 8.0 ml during the first 12 days and 9.5 ml during the first 30 days of the study (i.e., up to 17% total blood volume per week and up to 20% total blood volume per month). Detailed behavioral assessments of all animals were made twice daily on every day of sample collection. The dengue-1 group were viremic for an average of 3.75 days. Dengue-2, -3, and -4 groups had average viremias of 1.00, 1.25, and 1.33 days, respectively. All animals demonstrated appropriate antibody responses as determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbency assay (ELISA). Animals tolerated repeated phlebotomy well, as all animals remained within clinically normal hematocrit (HCT) reference ranges, and no lasting effects on HCT occurred in any monkey. Final HCT for most animals was greater than 45% (mean final hematocrit, 45%). The maximum decrease in HCT ranged from 3.5 to 19 (mean, 8.9) percentage points. No consistent correlation of any behavioral disease parameters with viremia and antibody status was demonstrated, although overt illness did occur in two animals. Aotus can be an affordable and safe model for testing dengue vaccine efficacy; further testing with higher doses of dengue-2, -3 and -4 viruses is warranted.

Abstract
A variety of animals have been used for tuberculosis research, and each animal model has its strengths and weaknesses. We sought to develop a non-human primate model of tuberculosis to model aspects of human tuberculosis that are difficult to model in other animals, including the pathology in the lungs, various progression to disease, and immunologic correlates of infection or disease that are likely to be similar in humans. To date, we have infected 17 cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fasicularis) with a low dose (15-25CFU) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strain Erdman. The monkeys were grouped into three categories on the basis of disease progression: rapid progression (advanced disease by 3 months post-infection), active/chronic infection (signs of disease but a slower progression), and latent infection (no signs of clinical disease). Animals were followed clinically post-infection, including blood work, physical examinations, serial bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and gastric aspirates for M. tuberculosis culture, chest radiographs, and tuberculin reactivity. Immunologic assays on cells from blood, BAL fluid, and tissue, have been performed, including proliferation, flow cytometry, ELIspot assays, cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) assays, and ELISAs. The spectrum of disease observed in these monkeys is similar to humans, and this model may be very useful for studying pathogenesis and immunology of tuberculosis, as well as testing vaccines, diagnostic reagents, and drugs prior to use in human populations.

Abstract
Chronic enterocolitis is the leading cause of morbidity in colonies of captive rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). This study's aim was to identify the common enteric pathogens frequently associated with chronic enterocolitis in normal, immunocompetent rhesus monkeys and to elucidate the influence of this clinical syndrome on the host immune system. We analyzed the fecal specimens from 100 rhesus macaques with or without clinical symptoms of chronic diarrhea. Retrospective analysis revealed an increased incidence of Campylobacter spp. (Campylobacter coli and Campylobacter jejuni), Shigella flexneri, Yersinia enterocolitica, adenovirus, and Strongyloides fulleborni in samples collected from animals with chronic diarrhea (P < 0.05). The presence of additional enteric pathogens, such as Escherichia coli, carrying the eaeA intimin or Stx2c Shiga toxin virulence genes, Balantidium coli, Giardia lamblia, Enterocytozoon bieneusi, and Trichuris trichiura was found in all animals regardless of whether diarrhea was present. In addition, the upregulation of interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha), IL-3, and tumor necrosis factor alpha cytokine genes, accompanied by an increased presence of activated (CD4(+) CD69(+)) T lymphocytes was found in gut-associated lymphoid tissues collected from animals with chronic enterocolitis and diarrhea in comparison with clinically healthy controls (P < 0.05). These data indicate that chronic enterocolitis and diarrhea are associated, in part, with a variety of enteric pathogens and highlight the importance of defining the microbiological status of nonhuman primates used for infectious disease studies. The data also suggest that chronic colitis in rhesus macaques may have potential as a model of inflammatory bowel disease in humans.

Abstract
GBV-B virus is a close relative to hepatitis C virus (HCV) that causes hepatitis in tamarins, and thus, is an attractive surrogate model for HCV. In this study, we demonstrate that the host range of GBV-B extends to the common marmoset with an infection profile similar to that observed for tamarins. Marmoset hepatocytes were susceptible to in vitro infection with GBV-B. Virus was efficiently secreted into the medium, and approximately 25% of hepatocytes were positive for NS3 staining. In an attempt to induce persistent infections, tamarins were immunosuppressed with FK506 and inoculated with GBV-B. Although no chronic infections were induced, the duration of viremia was increased in most animals. In one animal, the duration of viremia was extended to 46 weeks, but viral clearance occurred 18 weeks after stopping FK506 therapy. The greater availability of marmosets in comparison to tamarins will greatly facilitate future research efforts with this model.

Abstract
Tuberculosis is a significant threat to non-human primates and their caretakers. The diagnosis of tuberculosis in living non-human primates is currently based on the tuberculin skin test, which is cumbersome and sometimes inaccurate. Development of an accurate serodiagnostic test requires identification of the key antigens of Mycobacterium tuberculosis involved in antibody production. When sequential serum samples obtained from 17 cynomolgus, rhesus, and African green monkeys up to seven months since experimental infection with M. tuberculosis Erdman were screened for antibody against purified proteins of M. tuberculosis, three highly seroreactive antigens were identified. One protein, ESAT-6, reacted with sera from all infected animals. Two additional proteins, alpha-crystallin and MTSA-10, were recognized by sera from approximately 90% of infected animals. Time course analysis of antibody production indicated that the earliest response was usually to ESAT-6 alone or to ESAT-6 and other antigen(s). These results provide experimental evidence of the potential value of ESAT-6 as an antigen for use in serodiagnosis of tuberculosis in non-human primates.

Abstract
The association of the microsporidia Enterocytozoon bieneusi with chronic diarrhea and wasting in individuals with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has been demonstrated. The disease caused by E. bieneusi has been linked to decreased levels of circulating CD4+ T lymphocytes. In this study, we investigated the relationship between the extent of excretion of E. bieneusi in feces of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected juvenile macaques and the CD4+ T lymphocyte counts in the peripheral blood. Twelve juvenile rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were intravenously inoculated with the pathogenic molecular clone SIVmac239. Numbers of CD4+ T lymphocytes were assessed by three-color flow cytometry. The presence of E. bieneusi DNA in feces was assessed by nested PCR. In addition, selected samples of feces were examined by competitive quantitative PCR to assess the level of E. bieneusi infection. Low (n = 5) to undetectable (n = 7) quantities of E. bieneusi were present in feces of the twelve animals in prior to inoculation with SIV. After SIV inoculation the number of animals shedding E. bieneusi increased (n = 10) as did the quantity of E. bieneusi shedding in the feces. Of the twelve juvenile animals, five animals died within 8 months post-SIV inoculation with symptoms of AIDS. Four of the five deceased animals showed shedding of E. bieneusi DNA in feces (> or =100 spores/g) for at least three consecutive months. Increased number of E. bieneusi in feces was accompanied by decreased counts of circulating CD4+ T lymphocytes and increased SIV plasma viral load.

Abstract
Serum samples from 54 monkeys were collected from healthy individuals in a monkey farm in Luzon island, Philippines, in 1999, and examined by IgM-capture ELISA and indirect IgG ELISA for the presence of dengue (DEN), Japanese encephalitis (JE) and chikungunya (CHIK) viruses. The positive rates for IgM ELISA were 3.7, 35.2 and 14.8% against DEN, JE and CHIK, respectively. Higher positive rates were obtained when indirect IgG ELISA was used: 100% against flaviviruses (JE or DEN) and 59.3% against CHIK virus. The results indicate a high prevalence of flavivirus infections such as JE and DEN, and a lesser prevalence of CHIK virus infections, among monkeys in the Philippines. These findings suggest possible sylvatic transmission cycles of these viruses.

Abstract
Ebola virus (EBOV) is a member of the family Filoviridae and is classified as a biosafety level 4 virus. This classification makes the preparation of antigen and performance of diagnostic assays time-consuming and complicated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the value of EBOV immunoassays based on recombinant nucleoprotein (r-NP) and recombinant VP35 (r-VP35) using large serum panels of African origin and from primates. Furthermore, we investigated whether the results obtained with EBOV r-VP35 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) could improve on the findings obtained with the EBOV r-NP ELISA. The full-length EBOV NP and VP35 of the EBOV subtype Zaire were expressed as histidine-tagged recombinant proteins in the baculovirus expression system. The antigenic reactivity and specificity of these recombinant proteins were determined by Western blotting and ELISA using EBOV specific monoclonal antibodies. The results obtained with the r-NP and r-VP35 ELISAs were compared with the results obtained in an indirect immunofluorescence assay based on native EBOV subtype Zaire. EBOV specific monoclonal antibodies reacted specifically with the respective proteins in both Western blot and ELISA. Five hundred and twenty six samples from humans and primates were tested with r-NP and r-VP35 ELISAs. Monkey serum samples positive for EBOV subtype Reston and Zaire were both positive in the EBOV r-NP ELISA, whereas only the EBOV Zaire infected monkeys were positive in the r-VP35 ELISA. The sensitivity and specificity values of the EBOV recombinants' ELISAs compared to those of the immunofluorescence assay were 92% and 99% for r-NP and 44% and 100% for r-VP35. r-NP ELISA proved to be a sensitive and specific assay for EBOV diagnosis and for epidemiological studies for both EBOV subtypes Reston and Zaire. The use of r-VP35 in an ELISA format has no additional value for EBOV serodiagnosis.

Abstract
The rhesus macaque breeding colony of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) was established in 1932 from a founding stock of 100 animals. This population has remained closed to new animal introductions for almost 70 years. A serologic survey was performed to determine the prevalence of antibodies to selected viruses as a first approach to identifying viral pathogens endemic in this population. Banked serum samples were tested for antibodies to simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), simian T-lymphotropic virus (STLV), simian type D retrovirus (SRV), cercopithecine herpesvirus type-1 (B virus), rhesus cytomegalovirus (RhCMV), measles virus (MV), and hepatitis A virus (HAV). All samples were negative for antibodies against the simian retroviruses. The overall prevalence of antibodies was 95% for RhCMV, 45% for B virus, 35% for HAV, and 1% for MV. Prevalence was found to vary by age group.

Abstract
A primate model of leishmaniasis was developed with the objective of future vaccine testing. Lesion development and immunological parameters were studied upon primary and secondary infections. Seven Cebus apella were injected subcutaneously with 2 x 10(6) Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis promastigotes. Erythematous nodules appeared 19-29 days p.i., which disappeared 100 days p.i. Four months later, six of the monkeys were challenged with the same inoculum; three of them developed erythematous nodules after 7 days p.i., with ulcer formation in two of these subjects. The lesions were short-lived and all were cured 40 days post challenge. Anti-Leishmania IgG antibodies were detected and they increased after the challenge infection. Leishmania antigen-induced lymphoproliferation was found 1 month post-primary infection, which coincided with IFN-gamma production and lesion development. It decreased to control levels afterwards, but at the time of the challenge dose, it was significantly above the initial level. After the challenge infection, it first increased then decreased sharply at 40 days post-challenge, coinciding with the healing of the lesion. It increased again to a higher level at 60 days post-challenge. Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis-infection in C. apella did not induce complete protection against a secondary infection with a homologous parasite although specific antibody production and lymphoproliferation with IFN-gamma production were observed. This fact indicates that vaccine has to be better than infection in the induction of protective immunity, and raises a question on in vitro parameters that should be considered as a counterpart of expected protection induced by vaccine candidate. In addition, we conclude that this is a useful primate model for the evaluation of candidate vaccines.

Abstract
The comparative pathology of Herpesvirus papio 2 (HVP2) of baboons and SA8 virus of African green monkeys relative to that of herpes simplex virus (HSV1) of man was investigated in young adult mice inoculated intramuscularly and observed for 21 days. The 50% infectious dose (ID(50)) for HVP2 was approximately 10(2.0) plaque-forming units (PFU), while the ID(50) for HSV1 and SA8 was 10(2.5) and 10(3.8), respectively. There were marked differences in the ability of these three viruses to invade the central nervous system (CNS) and cause clinical neurological disease. HSV1 produced neurological signs in a few animals given 10(6)PFU, but SA8 did not. In contrast, HVP2 readily invaded the CNS and produced fatal disease with doses as low as 10(2)PFU. Two isolates of HVP2 tested had a 50% CNS disease dose (CNSD(50)) of 10(2.5) and 10(3.0)PFU and an LD(50) of 10(3.8) and 10(4.3)PFU, respectively. Histopathological examination of tissue from HVP2-infected mice revealed severe lesions of inflammation and necrosis in the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems, as well as of other tissues including skin, adrenal glands and the gastrointestinal tract. Viral antigens were detected immunohistochemically in lesions. This study showed that while both HVP2 and SA8 could infect mice, there were marked differences in the ability of these two closely related viruses to cause clinical disease and CNS lesions. This murine model may prove useful in the investigation of viral or host determinants responsible for the varying neurovirulence of these simian alpha-herpesviruses.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of filarial limb edema is not known. The role of parasitological variables and parasite-mediated phenomena in the development of limb edema was investigated in the Presbytis entellus-Brugia malayi model. Infection was initiated with subcutaneous inoculation of infective third-stage larvae (L(3)), and the animals were reexposed to different doses of L(3) at the prepatent, patent, and diminishing microfilaremia (0 to 5% of peak microfilaremia count) stages of infection. A large L(3) inoculum size and repeated inoculation in the ankle region during the prepatent, patent, and diminishing microfilaremia stages of infection were found to be necessary for reproducible induction of limb edema. The preadult stage of the parasite was found to be the most potent inducer of limb edema, followed by L(5) and L(4). The presence of the proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-1beta, and interleukin-6 in edema fluid in the leg receiving the parasite challenge indicated that the limb edema development was due to parasite-mediated cytokine responses. The absence of bacterial infection or anti-streptolysin O titer in the edema fluid and blood indicated that bacterial infection is not necessary for the development of limb edema.

Abstract
Contact between sooty mangabeys (SMs) and a pigtailed macaque prompted the serological screening of SMs for evidence of infection with B virus. Serological tests detected SM antibodies that reacted with B virus polypeptides. Additional testing was performed with sera from SMs with no previous contact with macaques. Results from these tests indicated that 56% (33/59) of the SMs had antibodies that reacted with B virus and SA8. SM antibodies also reacted with herpesvirus papio 2 and to a lesser extent with human alpha herpesviruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2). There was an age-related increase in the presence of these antibodies in SMs that was consistent with the serological pattern of reactivity observed in other nonhuman primate species infected with alpha herpesviruses. These data suggest that SMs may be a host for a herpesvirus that is antigenically similar to those viruses present in other Old World nonhuman primates.

Abstract
Better assays are needed for the detection of simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV), which induces persistent infection without overt signs of disease in most old world monkeys, but causes a fatal hemorrhagic fever in macaques. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is described here that is useful in identifying primates previously exposed to SHFV. This assay involves testing serum samples against SHFV and cell antigens to obtain an ODvirus-to-ODcell ratio that eliminates potential high background values associated with primate serum. High correlation was found using this assay, compared with that found with the current "gold standard" indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). However, this ELISA is less time consuming, less subjective, and not as prone to human error than the SHFV-IFA.

Abstract
To describe the transmission pattern of natural infection with Ebola Reston (EBO-R) virus in a breeding colony, the chronological and spatial analysis of mortality during the 1996 EBO-R virus outbreak was done in this study. The EBO-R virus infection among monkeys in the facility was widespread. Over a period of 3 months, 14 out of 21 occupied units were contaminated with antigen positive animals. A large number of wild-caught monkeys were involved in this outbreak suggesting that wild-caught monkeys have a high susceptibility to EBO-R virus infection. In this outbreak, morbidity patterns for individual animal units were very different regardless of the type and size of cages, individual or gang cages. The results suggest that not only the cage size but also poor animal husbandry practices may be risk factors for the spread of EBO-R infection.

Abstract
Common marmosets (Callithrixjacchus) were orally inoculated with a Brazilian strain (HAF-203) of hepatitis A virus (HAy). Three monkeys were euthanized at postinoculation hours 6, 12 and 24 to investigate the early events of HAV infection. Following others three inoculated and one control marmosets remained throughout the 46 day to evaluation of viral excretion. Different samples were collected to detect sequential presence of HAV RNA by nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in liver, saliva, bile and stools at 6 hours to 461h days postinoculation. Liver tissues were examined by immunofluorescence assay in a confocal laser-scanning microscope for the presence of HAV antigen. HAV RNA was detected in saliva during the course of the study, in bile from 24 hours to 46 days. in stools from 7 to 46 days and liver at 12 hours postinfection. In immunofluorescence of liver stained preparations, viral antigen was present at six hours after inoculation throughout the remainder of the 46-day study. The animals developed histological and biochemical acute hepatitis after second week postinoculation. Spleen, duodenum, and mesenteric lymph nodes specimens were negative for HAV antigens. This study supports the possibility that in Callithrixjacchus orally inoculated with hepatitis A virus the saliva route may be additional way of viral elimination. The viral replication in the liver was responsible for biliary HAV presence and latter HAV detection in fecal samples.

Abstract
Ebola virus (EBO) causes the most severe form of viral hemorrhagic fever in humans and nonhuman primates with up to 90% of infections culminating in death. The requirement of maximum containment laboratories for Ebola virus research has limited opportunities to study the pathogenesis of EBO infections. While tissue damage does occur, often it would appear not to be sufficient to explain death, indicating that soluble mediators play an important role in disease progression. In previous studies, fatal human infections with the Zaire subtype of Ebola (EBO-Z) were associated with an increase in the levels of inflammatory cytokines. In this investigation, a new multiplex assay was developed and used to measure circulating levels of cytokines and chemokines in cynomolgus macaques infected with the Reston subtype of EBO (EBO-R). Increased levels of IL-6, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, IL-2, IL-4, IL-8, IL-10, and GM-CSF were detected in infected animals, and the increase in circulating cytokines correlated with an increase in circulating viral antigen. Blood samples from animals showing high levels of cytokines were also tested for the chemokines: MCP-1, IL-1beta, MIP-1alpha, MIP-1beta, IP-10, and RANTES. High levels of MCP-1 and MIP-1beta, and RANTES were found in infected primates and, while levels were more variable, IL-1beta was detected only in infected animals.

Abstract
Herpes B virus (Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1) is endemic in captive macaque populations and poses a serious threat to humans who work with macaques or their tissues. A vaccine that could prevent or limit B virus infection in macaques would lessen occupational risk. To that end, a DNA vaccine plasmid expressing the B virus glycoprotein B (gB) was constructed and tested for immunogenicity in mice and macaques. Intramuscular (IM) or intradermal (ID) immunization in mice elicited antibodies to gB that were relatively stable over time and predominately of the IgG2a isotype. Five juvenile macaques were immunized by either IM+ID (n=2) or IM (n=3) routes, with two booster immunizations at 10 and 30 weeks. All five animals developed antibodies to B virus gB, with detectable neutralizing activity in the IM+ID immunized animals. These results demonstrated that DNA immunization can be used to generate an immune response against a B virus glycoprotein in uninfected macaques.

Abstract
The gene encoding glycoprotein D (gD) of the monkey B virus (Cercopithecine herpesvirus 1) was cloned into a mammalian expression vector, pcDNA3.1(-), and the recombinant plasmid DNA was transfected into COS7 cells. The expression of gD in transfected COS7 cells was detected by indirect immunofluorescence assay or radioimmunoprecipitation analysis (RIPA). Although the expressed gD protein was revealed to react well with sera from monkeys naturally infected with B virus by RIPA, some sera showed reduced reactivity when analyzed by the Western blotting (WB) method. Some sera also showed relatively high background when the WB was performed using gD expressed from recombinant plasmid. The mutant gD protein lacking the transmembrane domain (TM) and cytoplasmic tail (CT) was next expressed in COS7 cells. The mutant protein was secreted into culture medium without apparent loss of the antigenicity. Using the secretory form of the gD protein as antigen in dot blot analysis, sera from B virus-infected monkeys were shown to react with the mutant protein without nonspecific reaction. Since the recombinant gD or its derivative lacking TM and CT could be expressed in mammalian cells with proper antigenicity, these antigens appeared to be useful for serological detection of B virus infection in monkeys.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) kills more people in the world today than any other infectious disease. A better vaccine to prevent clinical tuberculosis is greatly needed. Candidate vaccines are often evaluated by infecting rabbits, mice and guinea pigs by an aerosol of virulent tubercle bacilli and culturing their lungs for viable bacilli at various times thereafter. In all three species, however, the number of viable bacilli usually does not continuously increase until the host succumbs. The number of viable bacilli increases logarithmically for only about 3 weeks. Then, the host develops delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) and cell-mediated immunity (CMI), which keep the number of viable bacilli rather constant during the subsequent weeks. In the immunized host, DTH and CMI stop the logarithmic increase sooner than in the unimmunized controls, so that the stationary bacillary levels that follow are lower. This review analyzes host-parasite interactions in the lungs of rabbits, mice and guinea pigs. All three species cannot prevent inhaled fully virulent tubercle bacilli from establishing an infection, but they differ markedly in the type of the disease produced once it is established.

Abstract
Several cases of hydatid echinococcosis were diagnosed in a laboratory colony of 19 pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) at the Paul Ehrlich Institute, Germany. Three hydatid cysts were found in the liver of an euthanized animal. The diagnosis of an Echinococcus granulosus infection was confirmed by histopathology and the results of a specific polymerase chain reaction. The serum of five of 14 other monkeys tested for Echinococcus antibodies using a genus-specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was positive or weakly positive; none of the animals, however, showed specific reactions in a E. multilocularis-specific ELISA. On ultrasonographic examination, alterations in the liver were found in four of the serologically positive monkeys, and two animals showed clinical signs such as progressive anorexia, apathy and icterus. The monkeys had most probably acquired the E. granulosus infection in their breeding colony in Slovenia.

Abstract
OESOPHAGOSTOMUM BIFURCUM: larvae, cultured from human stools collected in northern Ghana, were used to establish experimental infections in monkeys. A patent infection was established in a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) and this infection was used to generate larvae to inoculate additional monkeys. In all, 17 animals were inoculated. Thirteen of 15 animals developed antibodies to the infection between 19 and 62 days post inoculation (PI); two animals had a positive response before inoculation. Four of ten animals developed patent infections between 88 and 134 days and passed eggs in the faeces. Egg shedding was consistent in only one animal, but at low levels of one or two eggs per 2 mg direct smear, and extended over a 400 day period. In the other three animals, egg shedding was sporadic and of only 2-4 weeks duration. In seven animals necropsied between 19 and 22 days PI, one to 17 early fourth-stage larvae were recovered from nodules in the bowel wall; in an eighth animal examined at 314 days, six immature adult worms (early fifth stage) were recovered from nodules in the bowel wall. The morphological features and growth of these recovered larvae are described. Three animals were inoculated with larvae that had been dried for one week at 28 degrees C; two animals began shedding eggs at 128 and 134 days PI, respectively. The present results suggest that the parasite obtained from humans is poorly adapted to lower primate hosts, and supports the concept that Oesophagostomum bifurcum found in humans and monkeys in the same geographical region of northern Ghana and Togo are distinct and that the infections in humans are not likely to represent zoonotic infections acquired from monkeys.

Abstract
Plasma levels of the chemokine RANTES were examined in monkeys infected with either a pathogenic simian and human immunodeficiency chimeric virus (SHIV) or a non-pathogenic SHIV to determine whether RANTES levels were related to the pathogenicity of the virus, the plasma viral load, or the kinetics of CD4+ T-cells. In the results no significant correlation was found between the RANTES kinetics and changes in the CD4+ T-cell numbers nor the plasma viral loads in any of the monkeys, although a transient decrease of the RANTES level was observed in the pathogenic virus-infected monkeys. At least, the plasma RANTES level can not be used as an index of the pathogenicity of the virus at the early stage of infection.
