[Glomuvenous malformation: a clinicopathological analysis of 31 cases]

Objective: To investigate the clinicopathological features of glomuvenous malformation (GVM). Methods: Thirty-one cases of GVM diagnosed at the Henan Provincial People's Hospital from January 2011 to December 2021 were collected. Their clinical and pathological features were analyzed. The expression of relevant markers was examined using immunohistochemistry. The patients were also followed up. Results: There were 16 males and 15 females in this study, with an average age of 11 years (range, 1-52 years). The locations of the disease included 13 cases in the limbs (8 cases in the upper limbs, 5 cases in the lower limbs), 9 cases in the trunks, and 9 cases in the foot (toes or subungual area). Twenty-seven of the cases were solitary and 4 were multifocal. The lesions were characterized by blue-purple papules or plaques on the skin surface, which grew slowly. The lumps became larger and appeared to be conspicuous. Microscopically, GVM mainly involved the dermis and subcutaneous tissue, with an overall ill-defined border. There were scattered or clustered irregular dilated vein-like lumens, with thin walls and various sizes. A single or multiple layers of relatively uniform cubic/glomus cells were present at the abnormal wall, with scattered small nests of the glomus cells. The endothelial cells in the wall of abnormal lumen were flat or absent. Immunohistochemistry showed that glomus cells strongly expressed SMA, h-caldesmon, and collagen IV. Malformed vascular endothelial cells expressed CD31, CD34 and ERG. No postoperative recurrence was found in the 12 cases. Conclusions: GVM is an uncommon type of simple venous malformation in the superficial soft tissue and different from the classical glomus tumor. Morphologically, one or more layers of glomus cells grow around the dilated venous malformation-like lumen, which can be combined with common venous malformations.

Polygenic risk score for Parkinson's disease and olfaction among middle-aged to older women

INTRODUCTION

Olfactory impairment and Parkinson's disease (PD) may share common genetic and environmental risk factors. This study investigates the association of a PD polygenic risk score (PRS) with olfaction, and whether the associations are modified by environmental exposures of PM2.5, NO2, or smoking.

METHODS

This analysis included 3358 women (aged 50-80) from the Sister Study with genetic data and results from the Brief Smell Identification Test (B-SIT) administered in 2018-2019. PD PRS was calculated using 90 single nucleotide polymorphisms. Olfactory impairment was defined with different B-SIT cutoffs, and PD diagnosis was adjudicated via expert review. We report odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) from multivariable logistic regression.

RESULTS

As expected, PD PRS was strongly associated with the odds of having PD (OR highest vs. lowest quartile = 3.79 (1.64, 8.73)). The highest PRS quartile was also associated with olfactory impairment, with OR ranging from 1.24 (0.98, 1.56) for a B-SIT cutoff of 9 to 1.42 (1.04, 1.92) for a cutoff of 6. For individual B-SIT items, the highest PRS quartile was generally associated with lower odds of correctly identifying the odorant, albeit only statistically significant for pineapple (0.72 (0.56, 0.94), soap (0.76 (0.58, 0.99)) and rose (0.70 (0.54, 0.92)). The association of PD PRS with olfactory impairment was not modified by airborne environmental exposures or smoking.

CONCLUSION

These preliminary data suggest that high PD genetic susceptibility is associated with olfactory impairment in middle-aged and older women.

Integrated near-infrared fiber-optic photoacoustic sensing demodulator for ultra-high sensitivity gas detection

An integrated near-infrared fiber-optic photoacoustic sensing demodulator was established for ultra-high sensitivity gas detection. The demodulator has capacities of interference spectrum acquisition and calculation, laser modulation control as well as digital lock-in amplification. FPGA was utilized to realize all the control and signal processing functions, which immensely improved the integration and stability of the system. The photoacoustic signal detection based on fiber-optic Fabry-Perot (F-P) acoustic sensor was realized by applying ultra-high resolution spectral demodulation technique. The detectable frequency of photoacoustic signal achieved 10 kHz. The system integrated lock-in amplification technology, which made the noise sound pressure and dynamic response range of sound pressure detection reached 3.7 μPa/√Hz @1 kHz and 142 dB, respectively. The trace C2H2 gas was tested with a multi-pass resonant photoacoustic cell. Ultra-high sensitivity gas detection was accomplished, which was based on high acoustic detection sensitivity and the matching digital lock-in amplification. The system detection limit and normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient were reached 3.5 ppb and 6.7 × 10-10 cm-1WHz-1/2, respectively. The devised demodulator can be applied for long-distance gas measurement, which depends on the fact that both the near-infrared photoacoustic excitation light and the probe light employ optical fiber as transmission medium.

Noncontact longitudinal shear wave imaging for the evaluation of heterogeneous porcine brain biomechanical properties using optical coherence elastography

High-resolution quantification of heterogeneous brain biomechanical properties has long been an important topic. Longitudinal shear waves (LSWs) can be used to assess the longitudinal Young's modulus, but contact excitation methods have been used in most previous studies. We propose an air-coupled ultrasound transducer-based optical coherence elastography (AcUT-OCE) technique for noncontact excitation and detection of LSWs in samples and assessment of the nonuniformity of the brain's biomechanical properties. The air-coupled ultrasonic transducer (AcUT) for noncontact excitation of LSWs in the sample has a center frequency of 250 kHz. Phase-resolved Doppler optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to image and reconstruct the propagation behavior of LSWs and surface ultrasound waves at high resolution. An agar phantom model was used to verify the feasibility of the experimental protocol, and experiments with ex vivo porcine brain samples were used to assess the nonuniformity of the brain biomechanical properties. LSWs with velocities of 0.83 ± 0.11 m/s were successfully excited in the agar phantom model. The perivascular elastography results in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) of the ex vivo porcine brains showed that the Young's modulus was significantly higher in the longitudinal and transverse directions on the left side of the cerebral vessels than on the right side and that the Young's modulus of the PFC decreased with increasing depth. The AcUT-OCE technique, as a new scheme for LSW applications in in vivo elastography, can be used for noncontact excitation of LSWs in brain tissue and high-resolution detection of heterogeneous brain biomechanical properties.

A network meta-analysis of risk factors of infection among close contacts of COVID-19

Objective

We aimed to use network meta-analysis to compare the impact of infection risk factors of close contacts with COVID-19, identify the most influential factors and rank their subgroups. It can provide a theoretical basis for the rapid and accurate tracking and management of close contacts.

Methods

We searched nine databases from December 1, 2019 to August 2, 2023, which only took Chinese and English studies into consideration. Odd ratios (ORs) were calculated from traditional meta-estimated secondary attack rates (SARs) for different risk factors, and risk ranking of these risk factors was calculated by the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA).

Results

25 studies with 152647 participants identified. Among all risk factors, the SUCRA of type of contact was 69.6 % and ranked first. Among six types of contact, compared with transportation contact, medical contact, social contact and other, daily contact increased risk of infection by 12.11 (OR: 12.11, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 6.51-22.55), 7.76 (OR: 7.76, 95 % CI: 4.09-14.73), 4.65 (OR: 4.65, 95 % CI: 2.66-8.51) and 8.23 OR: 8.23, 95 % CI: 4.23-16.01) times, respectively. Overall, SUCRA ranks from highest to lowest as daily contact (94.7 %), contact with pollution subjects (78.4 %), social contact (60.8 %), medical contact (31.8 %), other (27.9 %), transportation contact (6.4 %).

Conclusion

The type of contact had the greatest impact on COVID-19 close contacts infection among the risk factors we included. Daily contact carried the greatest risk of infection among six types of contact, followed by contact with pollution subjects, social contact, other, medical contact and transportation contact. The results can provide scientific basis for rapid assess the risk of infection among close contacts based on fewer risk factors and pay attention to high-risk close contacts during management, thereby reducing tracking and management costs.

Postoperative ratio of C-reactive protein to albumin is an independent prognostic factor for gastric cancer

OBJECTIVE

The role of postoperative of the ratio of c-reactive protein to albumin (CRP/Alb ratio) in the prognosis of gastric cancer is rarely evaluated. Our purpose was to investigate the correlation of the postoperative CRP/Alb ratio and long-term prognosis of gastric cancer.

METHODS

We enrolled 430 patients who suffered from radical gastrectomy. The commonly used inflammatory indices, clinical-pathological characteristics and oncologic outcomes were recorded. The median was used to the cut-off value for preoperative and postoperative CRP/Alb ratio, respectively. Kaplan-Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression model were performed to determine its prognostic significance.

RESULTS

In univariate analysis, there were significant differences were observed in overall survival (OS) according to perioperative CRP/Alb ratio, c-reactive protein (CRP), serum albumin (Alb), respectively. According to the multivariate analysis, higher postoperative CRP/Alb ratio (HR 2.03, 95% CI 1.55-2.66, P < 0.001), lower postoperative albumin (Alb), higher preoperative c-reactive protein (CRP) and higher postoperative CRP were indicated a shorter overall survival.

CONCLUSION

Postoperative inflammatory factors in patients with gastric cancer should be pay attention, especially postoperative CRP/Alb ratio may be an independent predictor of long-term prognosis of gastric cancer.

Terminally Chlorinated and Thiophene-linked Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor Structured 3D Acceptors with Versatile Processability for High-efficiency Organic Solar Cells

To exploit the potential of our newly developed three-dimensional (3D) dimerized acceptors, a series of chlorinated 3D acceptors (namely CH8-3/4/5) were reported by precisely tuning the position of chlorine (Cl) atom. The introduction of Cl atom in central unit affects the molecular conformation. Whereas, by replacing fluorinated terminal groups (CH8-3) with chlorinated terminal groups (CH8-4 and CH8-5), the red-shift absorption and enhanced crystallization are achieved. Benefiting from these, all devices received promising power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 16 % as well as decent thermal/photo-stabilities. Among them, PM6:CH8-4 based device yielded a best PCE of 17.58 %. Besides, the 3D merits with multi alkyl chains enable their versatile processability during the device preparation. Impressive PCEs of 17.27 % and 16.23 % could be achieved for non-halogen solvent processable devices prepared in glovebox and ambient, respectively. 2.88 cm2 modules also obtained PCEs over 13 % via spin-coating and blade-coating methods, respectively. These results are among the best performance of dimerized acceptors. The decent performance of CH8-4 on small-area devices, modules and non-halogen solvent-processed devices highlights the versatile processing capability of our 3D acceptors, as well as their potential applications in the future.

Silicon-Cantilever-Enhanced Single-Fiber Photoacoustic Acetylene Gas Sensor

A single-fiber photoacoustic (PA) sensor with a silicon cantilever beam for trace acetylene (C2H2) gas analysis was proposed. The miniature gas sensor mainly consisted of a microcantilever and a non-resonant PA cell for the real-time detection of acetylene gas. The gas diffused into the photoacoustic cell through the silicon cantilever beam gap. The volume of the PA cell in the sensor was about 14 μL. By using a 1 × 2 fiber optical coupler, a 1532.8 nm distributed feedback (DFB) laser and a white light interference demodulation module were connected to the single-fiber photoacoustic sensor. A silicon cantilever was utilized to improve the performance when detecting the PA signal. To eliminate the interference of the laser-reflected light, a part of the Fabry-Perot (F-P) interference spectrum was used for phase demodulation to achieve the highly sensitive detection of acetylene gas. The minimum detection limit (MDL) achieved was 0.2 ppm with 100 s averaging time. In addition, the calculated normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient was 4.4 × 10-9 W·cm-1·Hz-1/2. The single-fiber photoacoustic sensor designed has great application prospects in the early warning of transformer faults.

Correlation between androgen receptor expression and pathological response rate in pre-operative HER2-positive breast cancer patients

PURPOSE

In this study, we aimed to explore the potential significance of AR expression in HER2-positive breast cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant targeted therapy. Specifically, we investigated the correlation between AR expression levels and pathological complete response (pCR) rates. Our objective was to determine whether there were significant differences in pCR rates among HER2-positive breast cancer patients with different levels of AR expression.

METHODS

We conducted a retrospective analysis of 258 HER-2 positive breast cancer patients who underwent neoadjuvant dual-blocked standard therapy (following the NCCN Guideline 2021) at three breast cancer centers in southwest China. We analyzed the clinicopathological features and pCR rates of these patients. The cut-off value for AR expression level was calculated as the median value of 70%. We used the chi-square test to investigate the correlation between AR expression level and pCR rate, as well as other clinicopathological features.

RESULTS

Out of the 258 patients analyzed, 154 (59.69%) achieved pCR. Based on the cut-off value of 70%, AR expression level was classified as low (AR ≤ 70%) or high (AR > 70%) expression. Our analysis revealed a significant correlation between AR expression level and pCR rate in HER2-positive breast cancer patients (P = 0.031). We also found a significant association between pCR rate and clinical stage (P = 0.033) and chemotherapy regimen (P = 0.034). Furthermore, subgroup analyses showed that the pCR rate was higher in patients with high AR expression levels compared to those with low AR expression levels. Additionally, we observed that patients with an ER/AR ratio of less than 1 had a higher pCR rate than those with an ER/AR ratio greater than 1 (P = 0.038).

CONCLUSION

Our study findings suggest that HER2-positive breast cancer patients with high AR expression levels may achieve higher pCR rates when treated with neoadjuvant dual-blocked therapy. Overall, our results support the idea that AR expression levels have a significant correlation with pCR rates in HER2-positive breast cancer patients receiving this particular form of treatment.

Construction of a Flexible Optogenetic Device for Multisite and Multiregional Optical Stimulation Through Flexible µ-LED Displays on the Cerebral Cortex

Precisely delivering light to multiple locations in biological tissue is crucial for advancing multiregional optogenetics in neuroscience research. However, conventional implantable devices typically have rigid geometries and limited light sources, allowing only single or dual probe placement with fixed spacing. Here, a fully flexible optogenetic device with multiple thin-film microscale light-emitting diode (µ-LED) displays scattering from a central controller is presented. Each display is heterogeneously integrated with thin-film 5 × 10 µ-LEDs and five optical fibers 125 µm in diameter to achieve cellular-scale spatial resolution. Meanwhile, the device boasts a compact, flexible circuit capable of multichannel configuration and wireless transmission, with an overall weight of 1.31 g, enabling wireless, real-time neuromodulation of freely moving rats. Characterization results and finite element analysis have demonstrated excellent optical properties and mechanical stability, while cytotoxicity tests further ensure the biocompatibility of the device for implantable applications. Behavior studies under optogenetic modulation indicate great promise for wirelessly modulating neural functions in freely moving animals. The device with multisite and multiregional optogenetic modulation capability offers a comprehensive platform to advance both fundamental neuroscience studies and potential applications in brain-computer interfaces.

The Temporal and Spatial Changes of Autophagy and PI3K Isoforms in Different Neural Cells After Hypoxia/Reoxygenation Injury

There are limited therapeutic options for patient with traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Phosphoinositide 3-kinase family (PI3Ks) are the key molecules for regulating cell autophagy, which is a possible way of treating SCI. As we know, PI3K family are composed of eight isoforms, which are distributed into three classes. While the role of PI3Ks in regulating autophagy is controversial and the effects may be in a cell-specific manner. Different isoforms do not distribute in neural cells consistently and it is not clear how the PI3K isoforms regulate and interact with autophagy. Therefore, we explored the distributions and expression of different PI3K isoforms in two key neural cells (PC12 cells and astrocytes). The results showed that the expression of LC3II/I and p62, which are the markers of autophagy, changed in different patterns in PC12 cells and astrocytes after hypoxia/reoxygenation injury (H/R). Furthermore, the mRNA level of eight PI3K isoforms did not change in the same way, and even for the same isoform the mRNA activities are different between PC12 cells and astrocytes. What is more, the results of western blot of PI3K isoforms after H/R were inconsistent with the relevant mRNA. Based on this study, the therapeutic effects of regulating autophagy on SCI are not confirmed definitely, and its molecular mechanisms may be related with different temporal and spatial patterns of activation and distributions of PI3K isoforms.

An umbrella review exploring the effect of radiotherapy for head and neck cancer patients on the frequency of jaws osteoradionecrosis

OBJECTIVE

Efforts have been made to reduce epidemiological indicators of osteoradionecrosis in patients with head and neck cancer over recent years. This umbrella review aims to synthesize the information of the systematic reviews/meta-analyses investigating the effect of radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer on the frequency of osteoradionecrosis and to identify and analyze the gaps in current scientific literature.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A systematic review of systematic reviews with and without meta-analysis of intervention studies was conducted. Qualitative analysis of the reviews and their quality evaluation were performed.

RESULTS

A total of 152 articles were obtained, and ten of them were selected for the final analysis, where six were systematic reviews and four were meta-analysis. According to the guide Assessing the Methodological Quality of Systematic Reviews (Amstar), eight articles included were of high quality and two of medium quality. These descriptive systematic reviews/meta-analyses included a total of 25 randomized clinical trials, showing that radiotherapy has positive effects on the frequency of osteoradionecrosis. Even though a reduction in the incidence of osteoradionecrosis was observed back in the history, in systematic reviews with meta-analysis, overall effect estimators were not significant.

CONCLUSIONS

Differential findings are not enough to demonstrate that there is a significant reduction in the frequency of osteoradionecrosis in patients with head and neck cancer treated by radiation. Possible explanations are related to factors such as the type of studies analyzed, indicator of irradiated complication considered, and specific variables included in the analysis. Many systematic reviews did not address publication bias and did identify gaps in knowledge that require further clarification.

Dynamic detection of ppb-level SO2 based on a differential photoacoustic cell coupled with UV-LED

We design a photoacoustic (PA) SO2 sensor based on the coupling of a differential photoacoustic cell (DPAC) and cost-effective UV-LED, which realized the dynamic monitoring of SO2 gas at the ppb level. Aiming at the limitation of UV-LED divergence, a light source combination module with high condensing efficiency was devised based on a lens through theoretical derivation and experimental analysis. The PA signal with the optimum matching of the lens was 20-times larger than the direct coupling of the UV-LED. Due to the excellent beam collimation effect of the lens assembly, the background interference was only 1 ppm. In addition, the DPAC gathered the merits of doubling the PA signal and reducing the flow noise interference. The analysis of Allan-Werle deviation showed that the detection limit of SO2 was 1.3 ppb with the averaging time of 100 s.

Apparent Diffusion Coefficient as Imaging Biomarker for Identifying IDH Mutation, 1p19q Codeletion, and MGMT Promoter Methylation Status in Patients With Glioma

BACKGROUND

Glioma genotypes are of importance for clinical decision-making. This data can only be acquired through histopathological analysis based on resection or biopsy. Consequently, there is a need for alternative biomarkers that noninvasively provide reliable information for preoperatively identifying molecular characteristics.

PURPOSE

To investigate apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) as imaging biomarker for preoperatively identifying glioma genotypes based on the 2021 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of central nervous system (CNS) tumors.

STUDY TYPE

Retrospective.

SUBJECTS

One hundred and fifty-nine patients (47.6 ± 14.4 years) diagnosed with WHO grade 2-4 glioma including 93 males and 66 females.

FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE

A 3 T/spin echo echo planner imaging.

ASSESSMENT

The ADC measurements were assessed by two neuroradiologists (both with 6 years of experience). Three different lowest portions inside the tumors without overlap were manually drawn on the ADC maps as regions of interest (ROIs). The mean ADC value of the three ROIs was defined as the minimum ADC value (ADCmin ). An ROI was placed in the contralateral normal appearing white matter (NAWM) to obtain the ADC value (ADCNAWM ). The ADCmin to ADCNAWM ratio (ADCratio ) was calculated. Genetics results were retrospectively recorded from pathologic and genetic test reports.

STATISTICAL TESTS

Two-sample independent t-tests, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, and intraclass correlation coefficient analysis were used. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05.

RESULTS

Isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH)-mutated glioma showed higher ADCmin and ADCratio than IDH wild-type glioma. Among IDH-mutated glioma, higher ADCmin and ADCratio were found in 1p19q intact glioma than in 1p19q codeletion glioma. ADC parameters enabled differentiation of IDH mutation status with area under the curve (AUC) of 0.84 and 0.86.

DATA CONCLUSION

ADC has potential discriminative value for IDH mutation and 1p19q codeletion status.

Human aortic smooth muscle cell regulation by METTL3 via upregulation of m6A NOTCH1 modification and inhibition of NOTCH1

Background

Thoracic aortic dissection (TAD) is a very serious vascular condition that requires immediate treatment. Phenotypic conversion of human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs) has been reported to be a causal factor for TAD development. Genetic variations affecting RNA modification may play a functional role in TAD. In this study, we aimed to explore the potential role of the methyltransferase like 3 (METTL3) and notch homolog 1 (NOTCH1) N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification mechanisms in HASMCs.

Methods

HASMCs were cultured. METTL3 was knocked down and overexpressed. Then, both METTL3 and NOTCH1 were simultaneously knocked down in HASMCs. HASMC proliferation was determined using Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8). METTL3, NOTCH1, α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), smooth muscle protein 22-alpha (SM22α), and calponin expressions were monitored with quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and Western blotting. An m6A dot blot assay was used to examine the m6A modification levels. The NOTCH1 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) m6A modification was analyzed using SRAMP and RMBase v. 2.0. A methylated RNA immunoprecipitation (MeRIP) assay was used to evaluate the METTL3 overexpression effect on m6A modification of NOTCH1 messenger RNA (mRNA). A dual-luciferase assay was used to investigate the effect of METTL3 binding of the NOTCH1 mRNA m6A modification site. YTH domain family 2 (YTHDF2)-RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) was used to detect the change in YTHDF2's ability to bind to NOTCH1 mRNA after METTL3 overexpression.

Results

Overexpression of METTL3 inhibited α-SMA, SM22α, calponin, and NOTCH1 expressions and promoted HASMC proliferation. Knocking down METTL3 had the opposite effect. The cointerference of the METTL3 and NOTCH1 results suggested that METTL3 regulated NOTCH1, contributing to HASMC phenotypic changes. The MeRIP assay showed that the m6A modification of NOTCH1 mRNA increased after METTL3 overexpression. The dual-luciferase assay indicated that the NOTCH1 mRNA m6A modification site and METTL3 overexpression promoted NOTCH1 mRNA degradation. YTHDF2-RIP further demonstrated that the binding ability of YTHDF2 and NOTCH1 mRNA was enhanced after METTL3 overexpression.

Conclusions

METTL3 regulated the phenotypic changes of HASMC by upregulating m6A modification of NOTCH1 and inhibiting NOTCH1.

Heteroatom Functionalization of H-Terminated Diamond Surfaces

Diamond surface functionalization has received significant research interest recently. Specifically, H-termination has been widely adopted because it endows the diamond surface with negative electron affinity and the hole carrier is injected in the presence of surface transfer dopants. Exploring different functional groups' attachment on diamond surfaces and their impact on the electronic structure, using wet and dry chemical approaches, would hence be of interest in engineering diamond as a semiconductor. Here, we report the functionalization of the H-terminated diamond surface with nitrogen and sulfur heteroatoms. Surface characterization of functionalized diamond surfaces shows that these groups are well-distributed and covalently bonded to diamonds. Four chemical functional groups (-SH, -S-S-, -S-O, and -S=O) were found on the sulfurized diamond surface, and two groups (-NH2 and =NH) upon amination. We also report co-functionalization of surface with N and S (N-S), where sulfurization promotes sequential amination efficiency with reduced exposure time. Electrical measurement shows that heteroatom-modified diamond surfaces possess higher conductivity than H-terminated diamonds. Density functional theory (DFT) shows that upon functionalization with various N/S ratios, the conduction band minimum and valence band maximum downshift, which lowers the bandgap in comparison to an H-terminated diamond. These observations suggest the possibility of heteroatom functionalizations with enhanced surface electrical conductivity on the diamond that are useful for various electronic applications.

Extending Se substitution to the limit: from 5S to 5Se in high-efficiency non-fullerene acceptors

Based on the newly synthesized seleno[3,2-b]selenophene unit, two near-infrared non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) of 4Se and 5Se are constructed by replacing four or all sulfurs with selenium in high-efficiency Y-series NFAs. Consequently, binary devices based on 4Se and 5Se afford PCEs of 15.17% and 15.23%, respectively, with a photoelectric response approaching 1000 nm. More excitingly, the energy loss of the 5Se-based device was as low as 0.477 eV along with almost the smallest non-radiative loss of ∼0.15 eV thus far.

Membrane metalloendopeptidase (MME) is positively correlated with systemic lupus erythematosus and may inhibit the occurrence of breast cancer

BACKGROUND

Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have a lower risk of breast cancer (BRCA) than the general population. In this study, we explored the underlying molecular mechanism that is dysregulated in both diseases.

METHODS

Weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) was executed with the SLE and BRCA datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) website and identified the potential role of membrane metalloendopeptidase (MME) in both diseases. Then, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analyses of related proteins and miRNAs were performed to investigate the potential molecular pathways.

RESULTS

WGCNA revealed that MME was positively related to SLE but negatively related to BRCA. In BRCA, MME expression was significantly decreased in tumor tissues, especially in luminal B and infiltrating ductal carcinoma subtypes. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis identified MME as a valuable diagnostic biomarker of BRCA, with an area under the curve (AUC) value equal to 0.984 (95% confidence interval = 0.976-0.992). KEGG enrichment analysis suggested that MME-related proteins and targeted miRNAs may reduce the incidence of BRCA in SLE patients via the PI3K/AKT/FOXO signaling pathway. Low MME expression was associated with favorable relapse-free survival (RFS) but no other clinical outcomes and may contribute to resistance to chemotherapy in BRCA, with an AUC equal to 0.527 (P value < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

In summary, MME expression was significantly decreased in BRCA but positively correlated with SLE, and it might reduce the incidence of BRCA in SLE patients via the PI3K/AKT/FOXO signaling pathway.

The characteristics of brain network in patient with post-stroke depression under cognitive task condition

Objectives

Post-stroke depression (PSD) may be associated with the altered brain network property. This study aimed at exploring the brain network characteristics of PSD under the classic cognitive task, i.e., the oddball task, in order to promote our understanding of the pathogenesis and the diagnosis of PSD.

Methods

Nineteen stroke survivors with PSD and 18 stroke survivors with no PSD (non-PSD) were recruited. The functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) covering the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was recorded during the oddball task state and the resting state. The brain network characteristics were extracted using the graph theory and compared between the PSD and the non-PSD subjects. In addition, the classification performance between the PSD and non-PSD subjects was evaluated using features in the resting and the task state, respectively.

Results

Compared with the resting state, more brain network characteristics in the task state showed significant differences between the PSD and non-PSD groups, resulting in better classification performance. In the task state, the assortativity, clustering coefficient, characteristic path length, and local efficiency of the PSD subjects was larger compared with the non-PSD subjects while the global efficiency of the PSD subjects was smaller than that of the non-PSD subjects.

Conclusion

The altered brain network properties associated with PSD in the cognitive task state were more distinct compared with the resting state, and the ability of the brain network to resist attack and transmit information was reduced in PSD patients in the task state.

Significance

This study demonstrated the feasibility and superiority of investigating brain network properties in the task state for the exploration of the pathogenesis and new diagnosis methods for PSD.

Inclusion of interleukin-6 improved the performance of postoperative acute lung injury prediction for patients undergoing surgery for thoracic aortic disease

Background

We studied acute lung injury (ALI) in thoracic aortic disease (TAD) patients and investigated the predictive effect of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in acute lung injury after thoracic aortic disease.

Methods

Data on 188 TAD patients, who underwent surgery between January 2016 to December 2021 at our hospital, were enrolled in. We analyzed acute lung injury using two patient groups. Patients with No-ALI were 65 and those with ALI were 123. Univariate logistic, LASSO binary logistic regression model and multivariable logistic regression analysis were performed for acute lung injury.

Results

Preoperative IL-6 level was lower (15.80[3.10,43.30] vs. 47.70[21.40,91.60] pg/ml, p < 0.001) in No-ALI group than in ALI group. The cut-off points, determined by the ROC curve, were preoperative IL-6 > 18 pg/ml (area under the curve: AUC = 0.727). Univariate logistic regression analysis showed 19 features for TAD appeared to be early postoperative risk factors of acute lung injury. Using LASSO binary logistic regression, 19 features were reduced to 9 potential predictors (i.e., Scrpost + PLTpost + CPB > 182 min + D-dimerpost + D-dimerpre + Hypertension + Age > 58 years + IL6 > 18 pg/ml + IL6). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that Postoperative creatinine, CPB > 182 min and IL-6 > 18 pg/ml were early postoperative risk factors for ALI after TAD, and the odds ratios (ORs) of postoperative creatinine, CPB > 182 min and IL-6 > 18 pg/ml were 1.006 (1.002-1.01), 4.717 (1.306-19.294) and 2.96 (1.184-7.497), respectively. When postoperative creatinine, CPB > 182 min and IL-6 > 18 pg/ml (AUC = 0.819), the 95% confidence interval [CI] was 0.741 to 0.898. Correction curves were nearly diagonal, suggesting that the nomogram fit well. The DCA curve was then drawn to demonstrate clinical applicability. The DCA curve showed that the threshold probability of a patient is in the range of 30% to 90%.

Conclusions

The inclusion of interleukin-6 demonstrated good performance in predicting ALI after TAD surgery.

Phase Stability of Hexagonal/Cubic Boron Nitride Nanocomposites

Boron nitride (BN) is an exceptional material, and among its polymorphs, two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal and three-dimensional (3D) cubic BN (h-BN and c-BN) phases are most common. The phase stability regimes of these BN phases are still under debate, and phase transformations of h-BN/c-BN remain a topic of interest. Here, we investigate the phase stability of 2D/3D h-BN/c-BN nanocomposites and show that the coexistence of two phases can lead to strong nonlinear optical properties and low thermal conductivity at room temperature. Furthermore, spark-plasma sintering of the nanocomposite shows complete phase transformation to 2D h-BN with improved crystalline quality, where 3D c-BN possibly governs the nucleation and growth kinetics. Our demonstration might be insightful in phase engineering of BN polymorph-based nanocomposites with desirable properties for optoelectronics and thermal energy management applications.

A rare case of brominated small molecule acceptors for high-efficiency organic solar cells

Given that bromine possesses similar properties but extra merits of easily synthesizing and polarizing comparing to homomorphic fluorine and chlorine, it is quite surprising very rare high-performance brominated small molecule acceptors have been reported. This may be caused by undesirable film morphologies stemming from relatively larger steric hindrance and excessive crystallinity of bromides. To maximize the advantages of bromides while circumventing weaknesses, three acceptors (CH20, CH21 and CH22) are constructed with stepwise brominating on central units rather than conventional end groups, thus enhancing intermolecular packing, crystallinity and dielectric constant of them without damaging the favorable intermolecular packing through end groups. Consequently, PM6:CH22-based binary organic solar cells render the highest efficiency of 19.06% for brominated acceptors, more excitingly, a record-breaking efficiency of 15.70% when further thickening active layers to ~500 nm. By exhibiting such a rare high-performance brominated acceptor, our work highlights the great potential for achieving record-breaking organic solar cells through delicately brominating.

Ambient Air Pollutants and Olfaction among Women 50-79 Years of Age from the Sister Study

BACKGROUND

Poor olfaction is common in older adults and may have profound adverse implications on their health. However, little is known about the potential environmental contributors to poor olfaction.

OBJECTIVE

We investigated ambient fine particulate matter [PM ≤ 2.5 μ m in aerodynamic diameter (PM 2.5 )] and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) in relation to poor olfaction in middle-aged to older women.

METHODS

The Sister Study is a nationwide cohort of 50,884 women in the United States with annual average air pollutant exposures estimated based on participants' residences from enrollment (2003-2009) through 2017. This analysis was limited to 3,345 women, 50-79 years of age as of January 2018, who completed the Brief Smell Identification Test (B-SIT) in 2018-2019. Poor olfaction was defined as a B-SIT score of ≤ 9 in the primary analysis. We conducted multivariable logistic regressions, accounting for covariates and study sampling design.

RESULTS

Overall, we found little evidence for associations of air pollutants with poor olfaction. The odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of poor olfaction for each interquartile range (IQR) increment of air pollutants in 2006 were 1.03 (95% CI: 0.91, 1.17) for PM 2.5 (per 3.3   μ g / m 3 ) and 1.08 (95% CI: 0.96, 1.22) for NO 2 (per 5.7  ppb ). Results were similar in the analyses using the most recent (2017) or the cumulative average (2006-2017) air pollutant exposure data. Secondary analyses suggested potential association in certain subgroups. The OR per IQR was 1.35 (95% CI: 1.11, 1.65) for PM 2.5 among younger participants (< 54.2 years of age) and 1.87 (95% CI: 1.29, 2.71) for NO 2 among current smokers.

DISCUSSION

This study did not find convincing evidence that air pollutants have lasting detrimental effects on the sense of smell of women 50-79 years of age. The subgroup analyses are exploratory, and the findings need independent confirmation. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP12066.
