In vitro culture of various species of microsporidia causing keratitis: evaluation of three immortalized cell lines

Being intracellular parasites, microsporidia can only be propagated in cell culture systems. This study evaluated three cell lines to determine the most suitable host-parasite In vitro system. Confluent monolayers of vero, SIRC, and HeLa cell lines, grown in 24-well tissue culture plates, were inoculated with varying concentrations (1 x 10(4) to 1 x 10(8) spores/mL) of Vittaforma corneae, Encephalitozoon hellem, Encephalitozoon cuniculi, and Encephalitozoon intestinalis spores. Growth was compared quantitatively at weekly intervals. Encephalitozoon species showed the highest amount of growth when cultured in vero cell line, while there was no significant difference in their growth in SIRC and HeLa cell lines. In comparison, V. corneae showed the highest growth in SIRC cells, followed by vero cells. The analytical sensitivity was found to be 1 x 10(4) spores/mL for vero cell line compared to 1 x 10(5) spores/mL for SIRC cell line and 1 x 10(7) spores/mL for HeLa cell line. HeLa cells also showed rapid disruption of cells, and the spores could not be easily distinguished from cell debris. This is the first report of the comparison of vero, SIRC, and HeLa for the propagation of microsporidial spores. Vero cell line was found to be more sensitive than SIRC and HeLa cells, and we believe that the inclusion of vero cell line in the routine culture protocols of ocular parasitology laboratories would result in a significant increase in the diagnostic yield.

Relapses in multiple sclerosis are age- and time-dependent

OBJECTIVES

To examine the relative relapse-rate patterns over time in a relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) cohort and to investigate potential predictors of relapse rates and periods of low-relapse activity.

METHODS

This retrospective cohort study followed 2477 relapsing-remitting (RR) MS patients from onset to 1 July 2003. Annualised relapse rates were examined according to sex, age at onset, the patient's current age and disease duration. The relationship between relapse rates and baseline characteristics (sex, onset age and onset symptoms) were examined using Poisson regression. Time to the first 5 years relapse-free was examined using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis.

RESULTS

The mean follow-up time (from onset of MS symptoms) was 20.6 years, during which time 11,722 post-onset relapses were recorded. The relapse rate decreased by 17% every 5 years (between years 5 to 30 post-onset), but this decline increased in magnitude with increasing onset age. Women and those with onset sensory symptoms exhibited a higher relapse rate (p< or =0.001). More than three-quarters of patients (1692/2189) experienced a 5-year relapse-free period during the RR phase.

CONCLUSION

Relapse rates were age- and time-dependent. Our observations have clinical implications: 1) any drug able to modify relapse rates has the greatest potential for a population impact in patients <40 years old and within the first few demi-decades of disease; 2) continuation of drug beyond these times may be of limited value; 3) long-term follow-up studies must consider that relapse rates probably decline at different rates over time according to the patient's onset age; 4) a relapse-quiescent period in MS is not uncommon.

A comparison of glycaemic variability in CSII vs. MDI treated type 1 diabetic patients using CGMS

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate and compare glucose variability, hypoglycaemic events and daily glycaemic control in well-controlled (HbA1c <or= 7%), type 1 diabetic patients treated with either continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) using lispro or multiple daily insulin injection (MDI) using glargine once daily and lispro with meals.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS

A total of 16 patients with type 1 diabetes receiving treatment with either CSII (eight patients) or MDI (eight patients), all with HbA1c levels < 7%, wore a continuous glucose monitoring system sensor for 3 days to compare the number, duration, timing and severity of hyperglycaemic and hypoglycaemic episodes.

RESULTS

There were several more episodes of hyperglycaemic [blood glucose (BG) >or= 180 mg/dl] and hypoglycaemic (BG <or= 60 mg/dl) excursions observed in patients treated with CSII than MDI. Glycaemic exposure over 150 mg/dl was similar between the two groups. Maintenance of near-euglycaemia as determined by the average amount of time spent within the glucose range of 80-140 mg/dl was marginally significantly better for the MDI than for the CSII group. Although the CSII group had significantly more hypoglycaemic episodes below 60 mg/dl, the average duration of hypoglycaemia was not significantly different for the two groups. Similar percentages of nocturnal hypoglycaemia were seen. There were no reported major adverse events throughout the duration of the study.

CONCLUSION

Well-controlled type 1 diabetic patients treated with MDI had fewer hyperglycaemic and hypoglycaemic excursions than patients treated with CSII.

The role of carbapenems in the treatment of severe nosocomial respiratory tract infections

The prevalence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria continues to increase, particularly in patients in the intensive care unit with nosocomial pneumonia. The intention of this review is to provide an overview of severe nosocomial pneumonia, carbapenems and the problem of bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents. Attention was focused on the efficacy, safety and pharmacodynamics of imipenem, meropenem, ertapenem and doripenem. Issues on the impact of appropriate empiric antibiotic therapy for nosocomial pneumonia patients considered at risk for resistant pathogens are discussed. Critical decision making regarding the use of carbapenems for treating severe nosocomial pneumonia requires careful consideration of the four Ds of optimal antimicrobial therapy: right Drug, right Dose, De-escalated to pathogen-directed therapy and right Duration of therapy.

Simple method of preparation and characterization of new antifungal active biginelli type heterocyclic compounds

A simple, efficient and cost effective method is described for the synthesis of Biginelli type heterocyclic compounds of dihydropyrimidinones analogous. They were prepared from a reaction mixture consisting of substituted benzaldehydes, thiourea and ethylacetoacetate using ammonium dihydrogenphosphate as catalyst. The procedure for the preparation of the compounds is environmentally benign and safe which is advantageous in terms of experimentation, catalyst reusability, yields of the products, shorter reaction times and preclusion of toxic solvents. The four new synthesised compounds were tested for their antifungal activity. They have good antifungal activity comparing to the standard (Fluconazole).

Prevalence of chronic kidney disease stages 3-5 among acute medical admissions: another opportunity for screening

BACKGROUND

Early identification of chronic kidney disease (CKD) can help delay or prevent its progression, but the opportunities for systematic screening of patients are not well defined.

AIM

To define the prevalence of CKD Stages 3-5 and related anaemia among acute medical admissions.

DESIGN

Retrospective analysis.

METHODS

We studied all acute medical admissions to a major London teaching hospital during one year. The lowest creatinine, highest haemoglobin (Hb) and average mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were determined for 3 months before and after admission. Patients were categorized as CKD Stages 3-5 if the highest estimated GFR (eGFR) was <60 ml/min/1.73 m2. CKD-related anaemia was diagnosed if these patients had Hb <11 g/dl with normal MCV.

RESULTS

A total of 6073 patients were studied: male 49.0%, age 65.4 +/- 19.6 years (mean +/- SD), creatinine 82.7 +/- 46.7 micromol/l, eGFR 89.1 +/- 32.5 ml/min/1.73 m2, Hb 13.6 +/- 1.73 g/dl, MCV 87.7 +/- 7.2 fl. There was an inverse correlation between eGFR and age (r2 = 0.5; P < 0.001). Males were younger than females (63.5 +/- 18.4 years vs. 67.3 +/- 20.5) and had higher eGFR (93.6 +/- 34.1 vs. 84.7 +/- 30.2 ml/min/1.73 m2; P < 0.001). A total of 743 patients (12.2%) had raised creatinine >110 micromol/l, however using eGFR <60 ml/min/1.73 m2, 1075 patients (17.7%) were identified. The patients were categorized as follows: Stage 3: 950 (15.6%), Stage 4: 100 (1.7%), Stage 5: 25 (0.4%). Ninety-nine (9.2%) of the 1075 patients had normocytic anaemia.

CONCLUSION

We have found a high prevalence of CKD Stages 3-5 (17.7%) among acute medical admissions, of whom 9.2% had a related anaemia. Our findings highlight an important opportunity (amongst the 1.9 million acute medical admissions annually in England) for detecting patients with CKD.

Marginally low copper causes lesions of the midbrain in animal models: the implications for man

Serum copper levels must be maintained between very strict limits for the maintenance of good health. High levels have recently been linked to Alzheimer's disease while low levels during pregnancy cause enzootic ataxia (swayback disease) in offspring. In this study, we investigated the prolonged effect of serum copper that was maintained at and around 0.5 ppm, the level presently regarded as safe. Pregnant sheep and rabbits in the last trimester (1-4 weeks) of pregnancy were treated with the copper chelator ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATM). Treatment was continued until the young were one month old at which time the animals were sacrificed Serum copper levels of the parents and offspring were monitored by atomic absorption. The difference spectra (400-630 nm) was examined and SDS PAGE was used to evaluate the protein composition of the brain mitochondria. The anatomy of the midbrain was also studied. Although the young sheep and rabbits from the ATM-treated mothers showed no visible signs of disability or swayback disease, the midbrain of those young animals with serum copper between 0.3-0.9 ppm showed evidence of vacuolation, cavitation and chromatolysis. In contrast, the difference spectra and the protein composition of the brain mitochondria from these animals were all normal. These results suggest that although animals may appear normal and exhibit some normal biochemical markers, serum copper in the region of 0.5 ppm may not be safe for some breeds of sheep or rabbits. It is possible that a similar situation applies to man.

Updated research nosology for HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders

In 1991, the AIDS Task Force of the American Academy of Neurology published nomenclature and research case definitions to guide the diagnosis of neurologic manifestations of HIV-1 infection. Now, 16 years later, the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke have charged a working group to critically review the adequacy and utility of these definitional criteria and to identify aspects that require updating. This report represents a majority view, and unanimity was not reached on all points. It reviews our collective experience with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), particularly since the advent of highly active antiretroviral treatment, and their definitional criteria; discusses the impact of comorbidities; and suggests inclusion of the term asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment to categorize individuals with subclinical impairment. An algorithm is proposed to assist in standardized diagnostic classification of HAND.

Platelet activation in acute pulmonary embolism

BACKGROUND

Platelet activation is implicated in thrombotic disorders, but has not been described in acute clinical pulmonary embolism (PE).

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the natural history of platelet activation in PE and associated markers of inflammation, thrombosis and cardiac dysfunction.

METHODS

Thirty-five consecutive patients (age 62 +/-17 years) with acute PE were prospectively enrolled and followed for 6 months. Platelet activation was assessed by flow cytometry [measuring expression of platelet P-selectin, conformational activation of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa complex (PAC-1) and formation of platelet-leukocyte complexes] and by plasma soluble P-selectin. Platelet activation, right ventricular (RV) function (assessed as RV ejection area by transthoracic echocardiography), D-dimer and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were measured at presentation and repeated over 6 months follow-up.

RESULTS

Soluble P-selectin (56 +/-19 ng mL(-1), anovaP < 0.0001) and PAC-1 (1.5 +/- 1.8%, anovaP = 0.005) were mildly but significantly increased in patients with acute PE relative to healthy young men (soluble P-selectin 33 +/- 13 ng mL(-1), P < 0.001; PAC-1 binding 0.5 +/- 0.6%, P < 0.01) and age-matched controls (soluble P-selectin 31 +/- 9 ng mL(-1), P < 0.001; PAC-1 binding 0.4 +/-0.4%, P < 0.05). Platelet P-selectin expression and platelet-leukocyte complexes were not increased during acute PE. Echocardiographic RV ejection area correlated inversely with soluble P-selectin (r = -0.47, P = 0.007) and positively with platelet P-selectin (r = 0.49, P = 0.0007), suggesting P-selectin is shed from activated platelets in proportion to the severity of RV dysfunction. Elevated soluble P-selectin, D-dimer and hs-CRP demonstrated a time-dependent return to normal during 6 months follow-up.

CONCLUSION

Platelet activation is evident after acute PE. Platelet activation correlates with the severity of RV dysfunction, and can persist for several months after acute PE.

Accuracy of Arabic versions of three asthma symptoms questionnaires against the clinical diagnosis of asthma

Validation studies of asthma symptom questionnaires against provocation tests of bronchial hyperresponsiveness have shown comparable performances of written and video taped questionnaires. This study aimed to determine the test characteristics of Arabic versions of two written and one video taped questionnaires when compared to the clinical diagnosis of asthma made by two respiratory physicians. The written International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire had higher sensitivities and greater accuracy than the other two questionnaires. Comparisons between corresponding questions and scenes in the ISAAC questionnaires in general revealed no significant differences in performance. The ISAAC written questionnaire had test characteristics consistent with its potential use as a screening instrument for asthma in this population of children.

Measurement of the entropy and critical temperature of a strongly interacting Fermi gas

We report a model-independent measurement of the entropy, energy, and critical temperature of a degenerate, strongly interacting Fermi gas of atoms. The total energy is determined from the mean square cloud size in the strongly interacting regime, where the gas exhibits universal behavior. The entropy is measured by sweeping a bias magnetic field to adiabatically tune the gas from the strongly interacting regime to a weakly interacting regime, where the entropy is known from the cloud size after the sweep. The dependence of the entropy on the total energy quantitatively tests predictions of the finite-temperature thermodynamics.

Antifungal Activities of Biorelevant Complexes of Copper(II) with Biosensitive Macrocyclic Ligands

Four copper(II) complexes have been prepared using macrocyclic ligands. The macrocyclic ligands have been synthesized by the condensation reaction of diethyl phthalate with Schiff bases derived from o-phenylene diamine and Knoevenagel condensed β-ketoanilides (obtained by the condensation of acetoacetanilide and substituted benzaldehydes). The ligands and copper complexes have been characterized on the basis of Microanalytical, Mass, UV-Vis., IR and CV spectral studies, as well as conductivity data. On the basis of spectral studies, a square-planar geometry for the copper complexes has been proposed. The in vitro antifungal activities of the compounds were tested against fungi such as Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus stolonifer, Aspergillus flavus, Rhizoctonia bataicola and Candida albicans. All the synthesized copper complexes showed stronger antifungal activities than free ligands. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the copper complexes were found in the range of 8~28 µg/ml. These compounds represent a novel class of metal-based antifungal agents which provide opportunities for a large number of synthetic variations for modulation of the activities.

Safety and efficacy of rapid dose administration of quetiapine in bipolar mania

In this open-label pilot study, 20 adult patients hospitalized for acute bipolar mania received oral quetiapine as a single evening dose of 200 mg on day 1, increased by 200 mg/day on days 2, 3, and 4 until 800 mg/day taken in 2 divided doses on day 4. From day 5 onward, patients received a flexible total dose of 400-800 mg/day until completion of 3 weeks of treatment. Safety and tolerability were assessed by adverse-event (AE)-related dropouts in week 1, incidence of AEs including EPS, changes in electrocardiogram, and vital signs. Efficacy was assessed using the YMRS, PANSS, and CGI scales. Nineteen of 20 patients (95%) completed the quetiapine rapid titration during week 1. Significant improvement was observed in YMRS, PANSS, and CGI Severity of Illness scores by day 5, and was maintained throughout the study. A reduction of > or = 50% in YMRS score was achieved by 75% of patients by day 7, and maintained to day 21. Overall, 20% of patients discontinued due to AEs. Agitation was the most common cause of AE-related study discontinuation. Thirty-five per cent of patients required dose adjustment due to AEs after rapid dose administration was completed. Most patients tolerated rapid titration of quetiapine to 800 mg/day by day 4 of therapy, with a significant improvement in manic symptoms by day 7 of treatment.

Demographics and microbiological profile of pneumonia in United Arab Emirates

BACKGROUND

Pneumonia is a common respiratory disease, which has a mortality rate of approximately 14% worldwide. The management of pneumonia is based on the patient and microbiological profile existing in the community. There is a paucity of data regarding patient demographics and the microbiological profile for pneumonia in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

METHODS

We conducted a retrospective analysis of in-patients with pneumonia in the UAE. Epidemiological, clinical and microbiological data was collected from patients over the age of 16 years admitted to a single university hospital with a diagnosis of pneumonia between the years 1997 and 2002. Patients were categorised as having community acquired (CAP) or hospital acquired pneumonia (HAP).

RESULTS

Among the 361 patients, 186 were females and 175 males. The mean age (+/- SEM) of the males was 59 +/- 1.6 years and of the females, 56.9 +/- 1.5 years. The annual hospital admission rate for pneumonia increased from 410 per million population in 1997 to 760 in 2002. The pneumonia was community acquired in 289 (80%) and hospital acquired in 72 (20%). Hospitalisation for CAP showed a significant seasonal variation with peak admission rates in March and April and the nadir in August and September. The overall mortality rate was 13%, and was significantly higher for HAP (24%) than for CAP (10%, p < 0.01). The common microorganisms isolated from sputum culture in CAP were Haemophilus influenzae (18.6%) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (10%). The common pathogen in HAP was Pseudomonas aeruginosa in (50%). 4 out of 17 (23%) H. influenzae isolates were resistant to amoxicillin and 2 of 9 S. pneumoniae isolates (22%) were resistant to penicillin.

CONCLUSIONS

The hospitalisation rate for CAP has increased over the years and showed a clear seasonal trend in the UAE. H. influenzae was the most common organism among patients with CAP and P. aeruginosa in HAP. The mortality rate for HAP was significantly higher than for CAP. The drug resistance pattern was similar to reports from centres elsewhere in South East Asia.

Microsporidia: emerging ocular pathogens

Microsporidia are eukaryotic, spore forming obligate intracellular parasites, first recognized over 100 years ago. Microsporidia are becoming increasingly recognized as infectious pathogens causing intestinal, ocular, sinus, pulmonary, muscular and renal diseases, in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients. Ocular microsporidiosis, though uncommon, could be isolated or part of systemic infections. It occurs mainly in two forms: keratoconjunctivitis form, mostly seen in immunocompromised individuals; stromal keratitis form seen in immunocompetent individuals. Recent reports indicate increasing number of cases of ocular microsporidiosis in immunocompetent individuals. The ocular cases present as superficial keratitis in AIDS patients, and these differ in presentation and clinical course from the cases seen in immunocompetent individuals which mainly appear to be as deep stromal keratitis. For most patients with infectious diseases, microbiological isolation and identification techniques offer the most rapid and specific determination of the etiologic agent, however this does not hold true for microsporidia, which are obligate intracellular parasites requiring cell culture systems for growth. Therefore, the diagnosis of microsporidiosis currently depends on morphological demonstration of the organisms themselves, either in scrapings or tissues. Although the diagnosis of microsporidiosis and identification of microsporidia by light microscopy have greatly improved during the last few years, species differentiation by these techniques is usually impossible and electron microscopy may be necessary. Immuno fluorescent-staining techniques have been developed for species differentiation of microsporidia, but the antibodies used in these procedures are available only at research laboratories at present. During the last 10 years, molecular techniques have been developed for the detection and species differentiation of microsporidia.

Pancam multispectral imaging results from the Opportunity Rover at Meridiani Planum

Panoramic Camera (Pancam) images from Meridiani Planum reveal a low-albedo, generally flat, and relatively rock-free surface. Within and around impact craters and fractures, laminated outcrop rocks with higher albedo are observed. Fine-grained materials include dark sand, bright ferric iron-rich dust, angular rock clasts, and millimeter-size spheroidal granules that are eroding out of the laminated rocks. Spectra of sand, clasts, and one dark plains rock are consistent with mafic silicates such as pyroxene and olivine. Spectra of both the spherules and the laminated outcrop materials indicate the presence of crystalline ferric oxides or oxyhydroxides. Atmospheric observations show a steady decline in dust opacity during the mission. Astronomical observations captured solar transits by Phobos and Deimos and time-lapse observations of sunsets.

Complete genomic sequence of Pepper vein banding virus (PVBV): a distinct member of the genus Potyvirus

The complete genomic sequence of Pepper vein banding virus (PVBV), a potyvirus infecting chilli and other solanaceous plants in south India, was determined and compared with those of other potyviruses. The viral genome contained 9711 nucleotides, excluding the poly-A tail. The length of the 5'- and 3'-untranslated regions (UTR) were 163 and 281 nucleotides respectively. As for other potyviruses, the PVBV genome has a single open reading frame (ORF) starting at nucleotide 164 and ending at nt 9430, which encodes a polyprotein of 3088 amino acid residues. There are nine putative conserved cleavage sites within the polyprotein, which can result in ten functionally distinct protein products. Phylogenetic analysis of the potyviral polyprotein sequences showed that PVBV is a distinct species of this genus.

Effects of neurotransmitters on the chemokinesis and chemotaxis of MDA-MB-468 human breast carcinoma cells

Most patients suffering from breast carcinoma do not die due to the primary tumor but from the development of metastases. Active migration of cancer cells is a prerequisite for development of these metastases. We used time-lapse videomicroscopy and computer-assisted cell tracking of MDA-MB-468 human breast carcinoma cells, which were incorporated into a three-dimensional collagen matrix, in order to analyze the migratory activity of these cells in response to different neurotransmitters. Our results show that met-enkephalin, substance P, bombesin, dopamine, and norepinephrine have a stimulatory effect on the migration of the breast cancer cells; moreover, these cells show positive chemotaxis towards norepinephrine as was analyzed by the directionality and persistence on a single-cell basis. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) however has an inhibitory effect. Endorphin and leu-enkephalin, as well as histamin and acetylcholine, had no influence on the migratory activity of the cells. In summary, we provide evidence for a strong regulatory involvement of neurotransmitters in the regulation of breast cancer cell migration, which might provide the basis for the use of the pharmacological agonists and antagonists for the chemopreventive inhibition of metastasis development.

Effects of fruits and vegetables on levels of vitamins E and C in the brain and their association with cognitive performance

Demographic trends, together with improvements in general health and life expectancy, will greatly change the population structures of most industrialized and developing countries during the next 50 years. By 2050, approximately 30% of people in industrialized countries will be 65 years old or older. Aging is associated with increased risk for neurodegenerative disorders, which can cause significant cognitive and physical impairment and shortened lifespan, thereby causing a burden to society. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables have been shown to improve human well-being and to significantly delay the development of pathologic processes, including neurodegenerative disorders. Foods are important sources of micronutrients, including vitamins E and C, which play crucial roles in optimal cell function. Vitamin E is an important component of biologic membranes, and vitamin C acts as a cosubstrate for several enzymes. Both E and C are involved in the antioxidant defense of cells and actively contribute to the redox status of the cell. The levels of vitamins E and C provided by diet vary significantly. Vegetable oils, nuts and seeds are the main dietary sources of vitamin E, whereas fruits and vegetable are the primary sources of vitamin C. Human trials of varying doses of vitamins E and C, including low, supplemental, and pharmacologic, have found that these nutrients may improve immunity, vascular function, and brain performance. An optimal intake of these nutrients has been associated with decreased risk of developing cognitive impairments associated with aging. This paper will review the scientific literature on the sources, tissue levels and roles of vitamins E and C in cognitive performance and pathologic processes of the central nervous system in the elderly.

Dental caries prevalence and experience among the group of institutionalized hearing impaired individuals in Pondicherry--a descriptive study

A descriptive study was conducted among a group of hearing-impaired individuals in Pondicherry to assess the dental caries prevalence and experience. A total 114 individuals were examined. The data was collected by direct clinical examination using appropriate indices and findings were recorded on the proforma sheets. The data were statistically processed and the results were obtained. Prevalence of dental caries in terms of DMFT is 42.98% and dft is 45%. Mean dft +/- s.d is 1.2 +/- 1.38 and Mean DMFT +/- s.d is 1.0 +/- 1.42. It was concluded that in both permanent and deciduous dentition and the females have high caries prevalence.

Open access follow-up for lung cancer: patient and staff satisfaction

The majority of patients with lung cancer have incurable disease from presentation and a survival measured in months. Treatments offered to these patients are aimed at the palliation of symptoms with either radiotherapy or chemotherapy, or with supportive measures. It has been traditional to offer regular outpatient follow-up after initial palliative treatment. Further treatment options, which may be limited, are usually reserved for the recurrence of troublesome symptoms. A pilot 'open access' lung cancer clinic has been set up. Rather than have regular follow-up at the hospital, patients who have completed initial palliative treatments are discharged to the community with follow-up by their general practitioner and Macmillan nurse. Review at the open access clinic can be arranged at short notice if requested by the patient, carers, general practitioner or Macmillan nurse. The outcomes and level of satisfaction of patients, their relatives and staff to this method of follow-up were found to be positive. Open access follow-up may be useful for many patients after the completion of initial palliative treatment.
