Abstract
We report on transport measurement performed on a room-temperature-operating ultrasmall Coulomb blockade devices with a silicon island of sub5 nm. The charge stability at 300K exhibits a substantial change in slopes and diagonal size of each successive Coulomb diamond, but remarkably its main feature persists even at low temperature down to 5.3K except for additional Coulomb peak splitting. This key feature of charge stability with additional fine structures of Coulomb peaks are successfully modeled by including the interplay between Coulomb interaction, valley splitting, and strong quantum confinement, which leads to several low-energy many-body excited states for each dot occupancy. These excited states become enhanced in the sub5 nm ultrasmall scale and persist even at 300K in the form of cluster, leading to the substantial modulation of charge stability.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the frequency of intratumoural flow and peritumoural hepatofugal portal flow using colour Doppler sonography (CDS) on hepatic haemangiomas with arterioportal shunt (APS), and to investigate possible factors that may affect the capability of CDS to depict such findings. METHODS The study included 45 patients (35 men, 10 women; mean age, 56 years) with hepatic haemangiomas with APS on CT or MRI. Locating the tumour on greyscale sonography, the depth, size and echogenicity of the tumour were evaluated. CT or MR images were evaluated for fatty liver. CDS was performed to determine the presence of intratumoural flow and peritumoural hepatofugal portal flow. Differences in frequency of intratumoural flow and peritumoural hepatofugal portal flow according to the depth, size, echogenicity and fatty liver were evaluated by Student's t-test and Fisher's exact test. RESULTS On CDS, intratumoural flow and peritumoural hepatofugal portal flow were found in 66.7% and 60%, respectively. The tumour depth was the significant variable that affected the capability of CDS to depict such findings. The frequencies of intratumoural flow and peritumoural hepatofugal portal flow were as high as 88% and 80% for shallow (≤30 mm) lesions, and they were 40% and 35% for deep (>30 mm) lesions (p=0.0012; p=0.0051). CONCLUSION CDS can commonly depict intratumoural flow and peritumoural hepatofugal portal flow in patients with hepatic haemangiomas with APS. Therefore, CDS should be routinely performed when an incidental mass is encountered during the screening sonography, especially when the lesion is shallow.

Abstract
PtRuPd nanoparticles on carbon black were prepared and characterized as electrocatalysts for methanol oxidation reaction in direct methanol fuel cells. Nano-sized Pd (2-4 nm) particles were deposited on Pt/C and PtRu/C (commercial products) by a simple chemical reduction process. The structural and physical information of the PtRuPd/C were confirmed by TEM and XRD, and their electrocatalytic activities were measured by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. The catalysts containing Pd showed higher electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation reaction than the other catalysts. This might be attributed to an increase in the electrochemical surface area of Pt, which is caused by the addition of Pd; this results in increased catalyst utilization.

Abstract
To improve the catalytic activity of palladium (Pd) as a cathode catalyst in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs), we prepared palladium-titanium oxide (Pd-TiO2) catalysts which the Pd and TiO2 nanoparticles were simultaneously impregnated on carbon. We selected Pd and TiO2 as catalytic materials because of their electrochemical stability in acid solution. The crystal structure and the loading amount of Pd and TiO2 on carbon were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX). The electrochemical characterization of Pd-TiO2/C catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction was carried out in half and single cell systems. The catalytic activities of the Pd-TiO2 catalysts were strongly influenced by the TiO2 content. In the single cell test, the Pd-TiO2 catalysts showed very comparable performance to the Pt catalyst.

Abstract
We report on how to increase transmittance of a 0.2 mm thick polycarbonate (PC) film by periodic subwavelength anti-reflection structures in the visible spectral range. Subwavelength anti-reflection structures like moth-eyes are fabricated into the polycarbonate substrate itself by thermal nano-imprinting lithography (TH-NIL), which uses silicon stamps that have periodic structures such as gratings (lines and spaces) and pillared dots, and are fabricated by laser interference lithography (LIL) and transformer coupled plasma etching. To increase transmittance of a polycarbonate film, we control the periods and shapes of patterns, the number of patterned surfaces, and the overlapping direction of patterns that are fabricated into its surfaces. As a result of this, we show that average transmittance improves as the pattern period gets shorter and as both surfaces of the film are patterned. We also show that the spectrum range gets larger as the pattern period gets shorter and is determined by the longer pattern period in the case of designing a film to have different pattern period on its surfaces. The maximum average transmittance of a polycarbonate film increases up to approximately 6% compared to a bare sample in the 470-800 nm spectral range.

Abstract
Proper maintenance of immunosuppression is required to achieve long-term graft survival. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of change or modulation of an immunosuppressive regimen (IR) on graft survival during the posttransplant period in patients undergoing kidney transplantation. A total of 1164 patients who underwent kidney transplantation between January 1997 and December 2008 at Yonsei University Health System were enrolled. All patients initially received calcineurin inhibitor (CNI)-based double or triple IR (DIR and TIR, respectively). The causes of IR changes or modulation were reviewed retrospectively. Graft survival rate was compared according to types of maintenance immunosuppression (DIR versus TIR). Initially, DIR and TIR were adopted in 201 (17.3%) and 963 (82.7%) recipients, respectively. In 77 DIR recipients (38.8%) and 271 TIR recipients (28.1%), IRs were changed. Among recipients of an initial DIR, the most frequent reasons for IR change were acute rejection (50%) within 6 months of transplantation and chronic allograft dysfunction (70%) after 6 months. In TIR recipients, the reasons for IR change included drug toxicity or drug-related side effects (34.3%) within 6 months of transplantation and complications related to overimmunosuppression (39.3%) after 6 months. The group in which the IR was changed from the initial DIR to the later TIR had a statistically superior graft survival rate compared to the group that did not have a change in the initial DIR (P = .032). In contrast, TIR recipients without change had better graft survival rate than recipients with initial TIR change to later DIR (P < .001). Change or modulation of immunosuppression from initial DIR to later TIR could affect long-term graft survival.

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the behaviour and facial expressions of the fetus after birth by 4-dimensional (4-D) ultrasonography, and the association of the biophysical profile (BPP) with the Doppler scale. A total of 40 singleton pregnancies were included. All 4-D ultrasonographies were performed using the Accuvix XQ (Medison Co. Ltd, Seoul, Republic of Korea). The BPP and Doppler were performed on gravidas using 2-D ultrasonography. We recorded the newborn while awake no later than 48 h after delivery. The most frequent movement in fetuses and newborn was yawning and isolated arm movements, respectively. Sucking, swallowing (r = 0.78) and isolated limb movements (r = 0.72) in fetuses as observed by 4-D ultrasonography had a relationship with isolated limb movements in the newborn. Because of the limitation of ultrasonography, an overall comparison could not be made. There was a high correlation between sucking, swallowing, and isolated limb movements in fetuses and newborn.

Abstract
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has been recognized as one of the most common causes of severe respiratory tract infection in infants worldwide. As yet, a safe and effective vaccine has not been developed to protect humans from RSV. The F and G surface proteins have been widely investigated due to their potential to induce protective immunity. In addition, the M2 protein has been shown to be important in inducing a T-cell response. Our project involved the cloning of the immunodominant regions of the RSV F, M2 and G proteins into a bacterial vector, pET-32a (+). The recombinant RFM2G protein was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified using His Bind columns. The purified rRFM2G protein was analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blotting. The predicted structure of the recombinant protein built by the Swiss PDB Viewer program suggested a rod shape with a distinct swollen head and neck which was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. BALB/c female mice were immunized with either RSV, rRFM2G alone, or rRFM2G in combination with flagellin as a mucosal adjuvant. Serum was collected on days 0, 14, 28 and 49 to assess the immune response by Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Intranasal immunization of mice with the rRFM2G protein yielded significantly high serum IgG titers. Co-administration of the rRFM2G protein with flagellin did not augment the serum antibody response.

Abstract
Acute GVHD (aGVHD) is an important risk factor for predicting the incidence or severity of chronic GVHD (cGVHD). Transplant outcome can be influenced by the onset time of aGVHD in patients who have received allogeneic PBSC transplants (PBSCTs). The medical records of 134 patients who survived more than 3 months after myeloablative allogeneic PBSCT were retrospectively reviewed. In all, 38 patients (28.4%) developed grade II-IV aGVHD before day +28 (early aGVHD) and 25 patients (18.7%) after day +28 (late aGVHD). The 5-year cumulative incidence of cGVHD was 78.9% in the early-aGVHD group and 56.6% in the late-aGVHD group (P=0.034). The 5-year OS was 51.0% for the early-aGVHD and 80.8% for the late-aGVHD group (P=0.406). Infection was the primary cause of death for the early-aGVHD group (51.4 vs 16.7%, P=0.017), whereas relapse of the primary disease was higher among the patients with late aGVHD, although this was statistically insignificant (58.3 vs 25.7%, P=0.309). In a multivariate analysis, early aGVHD was identified as a risk factor for developing cGVHD (hazard ratio (HR) 2.278, P=0.004). The development of aGVHD early after allogeneic PBSCT increased the risk of cGVHD and infection-related death rate when compared with the late onset of aGVHD.

Abstract
Recent studies have established that amplification of the MET proto-oncogene can cause resistance to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines with EGFR-activating mutations. The role of non-amplified MET in EGFR-dependent signaling before TKI resistance, however, is not well understood. Using NSCLC cell lines and transgenic models, we demonstrate here that EGFR activation by either mutation or ligand binding increases MET gene expression and protein levels. Our analysis of 202 NSCLC patient specimens was consistent with these observations: levels of MET were significantly higher in NSCLC with EGFR mutations than in NSCLC with wild-type EGFR. EGFR regulation of MET levels in cell lines occurred through the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1alpha pathway in a hypoxia-independent manner. This regulation was lost, however, after MET gene amplification or overexpression of a constitutively active form of HIF-1alpha. EGFR- and hypoxia-induced invasiveness of NSCLC cells, but not cell survival, were found to be MET dependent. These findings establish that, absent MET amplification, EGFR signaling can regulate MET levels through HIF-1alpha and that MET is a key downstream mediator of EGFR-induced invasiveness in EGFR-dependent NSCLC cells.

Abstract
AIMS There is evidence suggesting that the respiratory response to sedation is different in patients with sleep apnoea, which is common in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). This study examined the respiratory response of sedation with propofol and alfentanil, whose pharmacokinetics are not affected by the renal function, in CRF patients. METHODS Chronic renal failure patients who underwent arteriovenous-fistular surgery (CRF group) and patients who underwent chemoport insertion (control group) were enrolled in this study. Sedation was induced by infusing propofol 1.5 micro/ml and alfentanil 0.2 micro/kg/min continuously in both groups. In the desaturation study, the respiratory rate and peripheral oxygen saturation in room air were checked. In the apnoea-hypopnoea study, the patient's sedation (Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation) score, apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) was recorded using a portable ventilation effort recorder (microMesam) while applying 5 l/min of oxygen through a facial mask. RESULTS The desaturation event was more common (21.5/h vs. 2/h, p = 0.001) in the CRF patients. Apnoea and hypopnoea (AHI: 13.0 vs. 1.6, p = 0.012, per cent of patients with an AHI > 5: 53.3% vs. 7.1%, p = 0.014) occurred more frequently in the CRF patients but the sedation score was not different. CONCLUSION Chronic renal failure patients have a higher risk of developing apnoea and hypopnoea during sedation, which highlights the need for careful monitoring and management in these patients.

Abstract
Posterior lingual glands consist of two sets of minor salivary glands that serve important functions in oral physiology. To investigate the hypothesis that the hypoglossal nerve provides sympathetic innervation to the posterior lingual glands, we examined ultrastructural changes in the glands following hypoglossal denervation. In the posterior deep lingual glands (of von Ebner), the serous acinar cells showed a decrease in the number of secretory granules and an increase in lipofuscin accumulation. The ratios of cells containing lipofuscin granules were 11.39, 36.49 and 50.46%, respectively, of the control, 3- and 7-day post-axotomy glands (P < 0.001). Intraepithelial phagocytotic activity was increased. The mucous acinar cells in the posterior superficial lingual glands (of Weber) also showed degenerative changes after hypoglossal denervation. One week after nerve transection, marked cytoplasmic vacuolation and fragmentation of organelles were frequently observed. Degenerative changes were also found in unmyelinated axons associated with the glands. We provide the first evidence of the structural and functional connections between the sympathetic component of the hypoglossal nerve and posterior lingual glands.

Abstract
Facial expression recognition is an essential research area in the field of Human Computer Interface. In this work, we present a spatiotemporal approach of facial expression recognition using image sequences. The system proposed in this paper describes fisher independent component analysis as a feature extractor where the higher order moment classification method (i.e., independent component analysis) is augmented with fisher linear discriminant. This procedure is simply abbreviated as FICA and produces the shape based spatial facial expression features. For recognition, we have utilized Hidden Markov Model (HMM) to learn the obtained spatial features with the temporal dynamics in six different expressions. Our proposed approach for the first time deals with sequential images of emotion-specific facial expression data analyzed with FICA and recognized with HMM. Performance of our proposed system has been compared with four conventional approaches where principal component analysis, generic independent component analysis, enhanced independent component analysis, and augmented principal component analysis with linear discriminant analysis are utilized for feature extraction. Our preliminary results show that our proposed system yields much improved recognition rates reaching the mean recognition rate of 92.85%.

Abstract
In proactive computing, human activity recognition from image sequences is an active research area. This paper presents a novel approach of human activity recognition based on Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) of Independent Component (IC) features from shape information. With extracted features, Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is applied for training and recognition. The recognition performance using LDA of IC features has been compared to other approaches including Principle Component Analysis (PCA), LDA of PC, and ICA. The preliminary results show much improved performance in the recognition rate with our proposed method.

Abstract
The variable projection (VP) method for separable nonlinear least squares (SNLLS) is presented and incorporated into the Levenberg-Marquardt optimization algorithm for training two-layered feedforward neural networks. It is shown that the Jacobian of variable projected networks can be computed by simple modification of the backpropagation algorithm. The suggested algorithm is efficient compared to conventional techniques such as conventional Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (LMA), hybrid gradient algorithm (HGA), and extreme learning machine (ELM).

Abstract
The generation and analysis of insertional mutations that perturb early postimplantation development provide a means to identify genes required at this stage of embryogenesis. We have been studying two independently generated insertional mutations termed 413.d and H beta 58 that result in early postimplantation lethality. Each mutation is associated with a distinct phenotype. 413.d mutant embryos become profoundly abnormal around the time of gastrulation: no identifiable embryonic axis or mesodermal structures are formed. H beta 58 mutant embryos proceed further in development, forming a relatively normal anteroposterior axis before developmental arrest occurs. We isolated embryonic stem cell lines homozygous for each of these mutations and assessed their differentiation abilities and developmental potential in vitro and after their introduction into wild-type blastocysts. From these studies we conclude that the 413.d mutation acts in a non-cell-autonomous fashion: mutant cells appear capable of participating, in conjunction with wild-type cells, in the formation of derivatives of all three primary cell lineages of the embryo. H beta 58 mutant embryonic stem cells are clearly pluripotent but they appear to be more restricted in their developmental potential, suggesting that the H beta 58 gene product may be required by specific tissues of the embryo.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The effectiveness of the Cobra perilaryngeal airway as a routine airway device and as a conduit for tracheal intubation has not been prospectively studied to date. This study aimed to evaluate the Cobra perilaryngeal airway for its potential role in an emergency airway rescue, by analysing its use as a bridge to blind or fibre-optic-guided intubation. METHODS In 49 patients, the procedure was carried out as follows: fibre-optic view through the Cobra perilaryngeal airway was assessed after the insertion of the Cobra perilaryngeal airway, then blind intubation through the Cobra perilaryngeal airway was attempted. After evaluating the success of blind intubation, fibre-optic-guided intubation was performed through the Cobra perilaryngeal airway. The endotracheal tube was removed after evaluating the success of fibre-optic-guided intubation, and then conventional laryngoscopy was carried out to evaluate the Cormack & Lehane grade and airway trauma. RESULTS In all, 95.9% (47/49) of patients had adequate ventilation using the Cobra perilaryngeal airway; the success rates for the blind and fibre-optic-guided intubation were 36.2% and 83.0%, respectively. The patients were divided into two groups according to the fibre-optic view. Group 1 included patients with an obstructed view by an anterior grill of the Cobra perilaryngeal airway head, and a view of the anterior epiglottis (downfolded epiglottis) with or without a visible larynx (16/47, 34.0%). Group 2 included the remaining patients (31/47, 66.0%). The success rates of the blind and fibre-optic intubations were different between the two groups (blind intubation: 12.5% vs. 48.4%, fibre-optic intubation: 62.5% vs. 93.6%, P 0.05). 42.6% of patients had blood staining after removing the device and complications such as trauma and oedema were confirmed under direct laryngoscopy. CONCLUSION This study suggests that the Cobra perilaryngeal airway could be a useful airway device as a vehicle for fibre-optic-guided intubation; however, it needs caution against airway trauma.

Abstract
Studying and understanding the joint effect of combined treatments is important in pharmacology and in the development of combination therapies. The Loewe additivity model is one of the best general reference models for evaluating drug interactions. Based on this model, synergy occurs when the interaction index is less than one, while antagonism occurs when interaction index is greater than one. We expanded the meaning of the interaction index, and propose a procedure to calculate the interaction index and its associated confidence interval under the assumption that the dose-effect curve for a single agent follows Chou and Talalay's median effect equation. In addition, we review four response surface models based on the Loewe additivity model using a single parameter to determine drug interactions. We describe each of these models in the context of Loewe additivity model and discuss their relative advantages and disadvantages. We also provide S-PLUS/R code for each approach to facilitate the implementation of these commonly used methods.

Abstract
We describe a novel automated technique for visualizing the three-dimensional distribution of fluorochrome-labelled components, in which image resolution is uncoupled from specimen size. This method is based on computer numerically controlled milling technology and combines an arrayed imaging technique with fluorescence capabilities. Fluorescent signals are segmented by emission spectra such that multiple fluorochromes present within a single specimen may be reconstructed and visualized individually or as a group. The automated nature of the system minimizes the workload and time involved in image capture and volume reconstruction. As an application, the system was used to image zones of fluorochrome-labelled microdamage within an 8-mm diameter cylinder of trabecular bone at a voxel size of 3 x 3 x 8 microm3. Our reconstruction of this specimen provides a visual map and quantitative measures of the volume of damage present throughout the cylinder, clearly demonstrating the interpretive power afforded by three-dimensional visualization. The three-dimensional nature of this highly automated and adaptable system has the potential to facilitate new diagnostic tools and techniques with application to a wide range of biological and medical research fields.
