Abstract
A novel marine hypotrichous ciliate, Sterkiella subtropica sp. nov., was recently isolated from a mangrove wetland in Hong Kong. Its morphology, morphogenesis and systematic position have been investigated. The novel species is diagnosed by combined features of morphology, ciliature and nuclear apparatus, while its ontogenetic events present a stable pattern: (i) the six streaks of the undulating membrane (UM) and cirral anlagen are segmented in a 1 : 3 : 3 : 3 : 4 : 4 pattern from left to right, and form three frontal, four frontoventral, one buccal, five ventral and five transverse cirri; (ii) the dorsal structure is similar to most other oxytrichids; that is, in a '4+2' pattern with three caudal cirri being formed. Based on the small-subunit rDNA sequence, the novel species is different from its congeners by between 21 and 35 bp, with sequence identities from 0.978 to 0.987. All molecular trees exhibited a similar topology: the monophyly of species of the genus Sterkiella is not completely supported in our analyses, and approximately unbiased tests (both including and excluding the novel species) also reject the possibility that Sterkiella is a monophyletic lineage, as indicated by the morphology-based classification.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the informativeness of magnetic resonance venography (MRV) in the diagnosis of different types of inferior vena cava (IVC) obstruction. PATIENTS AND METHODS 56 patients with IVC obstruction underwent MRV scans. These scans were evaluated for morphology of the obstruction and compared with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) images. RESULTS Using DSA, we determined that 47 patients had complete obstruction and 9 had partial obstruction. MRV scans revealed 6 cases of partial obstruction. Using MRV, we determined the morphology of the proximal and distal ends of the complete obstructions in the IVC. We classified our observations into cone, plateau, and irregular subtypes. Both DSA and MRV scans were compared to assess the consistency between two methods. MRV demonstrated high sensitivity (100%) for diagnosing a complete obstruction of the IVC, and its specificity was 66.7%. The positive and negative predictive values of MRV were 94% and 100%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS MRV imaging is a valuable alternative to DSA for detection of obstructions in the IVC in Budd-Chiari syndrome, particularly in the distal end, which could expedite the decision making for interventional treatment programmes. However, MRV imaging is less suitable for observing the morphology of the proximal ends of obstructions due to the limitations of the scanning plane and the influence of pseudo shadows.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to improve the understanding of FBA in children and to decrease the rate of misdiagnosis, missed diagnosis and morbidity. PATIENTS AND METHODS We analyzed the clinical features and the three-dimensional reconstructed CT images of 590 children with foreign body aspiration (FBA) in the Xuzhou area of the Jiangsu province. RESULTS CT imaging revealed common complications of FBA including emphysema (n = 379), pneumonia (n = 174), and atelectasis (n = 26). The remaining 120 patients had no visible complications on the three-dimensional reconstructed CT images. Serious complications including pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, subcutaneous emphysema, pneumatorrhachis could also be observed. The types of foreign bodies were diverse: the most common were peanuts and sunflower seeds. The diagnostic accuracy of the three-dimensional CT imaging was high, with a sensitivity and specificity of 99.83% and 99.89%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS 3D CT imaging is an accurate, non-invasive technique to evaluate children with suspected FBA that can help decrease the rate of misdiagnosis and eliminate a delay in treatment for this potentially life-threatening condition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Despite growing popularity of ketamine misuse in Asia, there is a lack of a validated instrument to measure the severity of ketamine dependence. Psychometric properties of Chinese Severity of Dependence Scale for ketamine (C-SDS-K) were examined in a sample of treatment-seeking ketamine users in Hong Kong. METHODS A total of 80 treatment-seeking ketamine users were recruited from 3 treatment centres. The C-SDS-K was administered to assess their severity of dependence on ketamine in the previous month. The diagnosis of their ketamine misuse as per the DSM-IV criteria, and the count of dependence criteria fulfilled in the previous month were determined by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I). RESULTS The C-SDS-K showed high internal consistency (α = 0.74) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.95). Total score of C-SDS-K correlated positively with frequency (rs = 0.73, p < 0.001) and dose (rs = 0.89, p < 0.001) of ketamine use per week in the previous month, duration of regular ketamine use (rs = 0.28, p = 0.01), and the count of DSM-IV ketamine dependence criteria met in the previous month (rs = 0.84, p < 0.001). All items loaded strongly on a single factor (factor loading ≥ 0.60) in principal component analysis. CONCLUSION The findings support SDS as a reliable and valid tool for measuring the severity of dependence in the treatment-seeking population of Chinese ketamine users.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Braunwald classification and TIMI (Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction) risk score are used to stratify cardiovascular risk in patients with unstable angina (UA). However, these scores have a limited capacity in the practice of cardiology. OBJECTIVES This study sought to develop a new score, based on blood biomarkers and coronary computed tomographic angiography (CCTA) characteristics, for patients with UA. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study group consisted of 201 patients with confirmed UA. Follow-up time was 1 year; major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) included cardiovascular death, recurrent acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and re-admission to hospital. Blood biomarkers including high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (Hs-cTnT), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP), myeloperoxidase (MPO) N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) were measured. CCTA characteristics such as stenosis, plaque, epicardial fat volume (EFV), and calcification were evaluated. After analysis of relationships, the novel risk BETTER (BiomarkErs and compuTed Tomography scorE on Risk stratification) score was assessed in 201 patients. RESULTS In all, 25 MACEs (12.44 %) occurred: 2 cardiac deaths (1.00 %), 13 non-fatal myocardial infarctions (6.47 %), 10 recurrent ACS and re-admission in hospital (4.96 %). Serum levels of MPO, NT-proBNP, Hs-TnT, Hs-CRP, and IMA were correlated with MACEs (r = 0.20, r = 0.40, r = 0.18, r = 0.24, p < 0.01, respectively; r = 0.12, p > 0.05). CCTA characteristics of stenosis, plaque, EFV, and calcification were significantly correlated with MACEs (r = 0.53, r = 0.57, r = 0.42, and r = 0.52, all p < 0.01 respectively) and were significantly higher in the MACEs group than in the non-MACEs group. Thus, a new risk score was created combining biomarkers and CCTA statistics into a Cox multivariable for risk prediction of 1-year MACEs: BETTER risk score = MPO•0.1 + Hs-TnT•50 + Hs-CRP•0.4 + stenosis•9 + plaque•13 + EFV•0.2. The areas under the curve (AUC) for the prediction by Hs-cTnT, Hs-CRP, and MPO were 0.536 (95 % CI 0.409-0.662), 0.745 (95 % CI 0.641-0.850), and 0.650 (95 % CI 0.541-0.760), respectively. The AUC for the prediction of CCTA characteristics of stenosis, plaque, and EFV were 0.905 (95 % CI 0.860-0.950), 0.912 (95 % CI 0.867-0.957), and 0.835 (95 % CI 0.752-0.917), respectively. In addition, the AUC was 0.621 (95 % CI 0.492-0.750) for the Braunwald classification and 0.680 (95 % CI 0.559-0.801) for the TIMI score. The AUC for the BETTER risk score was 0.937 (95 % CI 0.902-0.972). CONCLUSION The BETTER risk score is new tool specifically developed for patients with UA. The score displays higher prediction accuracy in terms of discrimination and calibration than other currently available scores for risk stratification.

Abstract
Here, 248 endophytic bacterial strains were isolated to assess the distribution and population diversity of endophytic bacteria in ginger plants. A total of 10.4 x 10(4) to 20.2 x 10(4) CFU/g fresh weight endophytic bacteria of different growth stages were isolated. Maximum bacterium numbers were obtained at the seedling stage. A total of 107 functional strains were screened, including 17 antibacterial strains and 90 indole acetic acid-producing strains. Based on 16S rDNA sequence restriction fragment length polymorphism and 16S rDNA sequences, these 107 strains were mapped and grouped into 16 genera. Bacillus and Pseudomonas were the dominant genera; however, the bacteria belonged to a tremendous range of genera, with the highest species richness being observed at the seedling stage. Sixteen strains exhibited antimicrobial activity against Pythium myriotylum Drechsler, while 7 strains exhibited antimicrobial activity against Phyllosticta zingiberi Hori. Bacillus was the dominant antibacterial strain. Pseudomonas fluorescens, B. megaterium, and Enterobacter ludwigii produced remarkably high levels of IAA. Only a few endophytic bacterial strains were inhibited in fresh ginger juice. Most of these strains were present during seedling stage, including Roseateles depolymerans, Chryseobacterium taiwanense, E. ludwigii, Agrobacterium larrymoorei, P. fluorescens, and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. This study indicates that the community of endophytic bacteria in ginger changes with the synthesis of antibacterial substances.

KIR3DS1*0130107 differs from the first member of the KIR3DS1*013 subgroup (KIR3DS1*0130101) by a single mutation at position 8922A>G (intron 5), just nine nucleotides away from the start of exon 6.

Abstract
This paper deals with the solution of the spherically symmetric time-dependent Hartree-Fock approximation applied to nuclear giant monopole resonances in the small amplitude regime. The problem is spatially unbounded as the resonance state is in the continuum. The practical requirement to perform the calculation in a finite-sized spatial region yields an artificial boundary, which is not present physically. The question of how to ensure the boundary does not interfere with the internal solution, while keeping the overall calculation time low is studied. Here we propose an absorbing boundary condition scheme to handle the conflict. The derivation, via a Laplace transform method, and implementation is described. An inverse Laplace transform required by the absorbing boundaries is calculated using a method of nonlinear least squares. The accuracy and efficiency of the scheme is tested and results presented to support the case that they are an effective way of handling the artificial boundary.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate dual-energy CT (DECT) findings of pulmonary ischaemic-reperfusion injury (PIRI) and its pathophysiological correlation in the canine model. METHODS A PIRI model was established in 11 canines, utilizing closed pectoral balloon occlusion. Two control canines were also included. For the PIRI model, the left pulmonary artery was occluded with a balloon, which was deflated and removed after 2 h. DECT was performed before, during occlusion and at 2, 3 and 4 h thereafter and was utilized to construct pulmonary perfusion maps. Immediately after the CT scan at the fourth hour post reperfusion, the canines were sacrificed, and lung specimens were harvested for pathological analysis. CT findings, pulmonary artery pressure and blood gas results were then analysed. RESULTS Data at every time point were available for 10 animals (experimental group, n = 8; control group, n = 2). Quantitative measurements from DECT pulmonary perfusion maps found iodine attenuation values of the left lung to be the lowest at 2 h post embolization and the highest at 1 h post reperfusion. In the contralateral lung, perfusion values also peaked at 1 h post reperfusion. Continuous hypoxia and acid-based disorders were observed during PIRI, and comprehensive analysis showed physiological changes to be worst at 3 h post reperfusion. CONCLUSION DECT pulmonary perfusion mapping demonstrated pulmonary perfusion of the bilateral lungs to be the greatest at 1 h post reperfusion. These CT findings corresponded with pathophysiological changes. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE DECT pulmonary perfusion mapping can be used to evaluate lung ischaemia-reperfusion injury.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the efficacy of the Ilizarov technique with bone segment extension in tibial infected nonunion. METHODS From September 2003 to June 2011, we treated 30 patients (21 males, 9 females; age 19-49 years, mean 34.1 years) for tibial infected nonunion with bone defects. Eleven cases were compound fractures internally fixed with steel plates, nine were compound fractures internally fixed with IM Nails, eight were compound fractures externally fixed with external fixation devices, and two were closed fractures internally fixed with steel plates. All 30 patients underwent debridement followed by the Ilizarov technique using bone segment extension. RESULTS After follow-up of 12 months-6 years (mean 29 months), stable union of fracture was achieved in all 30 patients. The time from bone fracture to union was 6-24 months, mean 8.8 months; external fixation was in place for 8-14 months, mean 10 months. External fixation index was 41 days/cm. Complications were three cases of pin site infection, one skin allergy, two fractures malunion, one early mineralization and one wire breakage. There were no cases of deep infection, nonunion or stiffness of the knee joint. According to the Paley fracture healing score criteria, 30 cases had excellent outcomes and two were good. CONCLUSIONS The Ilizarov technique with bone segment extension is effective in treating tibial infected nonunion with large bone defects.

Abstract
Many scuticociliatid ciliates are regarded as devastating pathogens in aquaculture. Among these, Pseudocohnilembus persalinus is a facultative pathogen that often results in refractory diseases of mariculture fish. Although traditional silver staining methods have been successfully used to identify these ciliates, their identification is hampered by their small size and their morphological similarity to closely related species. We designed an alternative method of identification of P. persalinus using an SSU-rDNA targeted oligonucleotide probe labeled with a fluorochrome, and optimized in a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) protocol. The assay results in a clear identification by strong fluorescence signals from the oligonucleotide probe. The method can be used for quick and early detection of P. persalinus infections on host fish, as well as other susceptible organisms in aquiculture water. It may also be used in studies of the geographical distribution of this scuticociliate.

Abstract
We investigated the expression of Src homology 2 domain-containing phosphatase (SHP-2) in laryngeal carcinoma and its clinical significance. Expression of SHP-2 was detected by immunohistochemical staining in normal mucosal tissues and various grades of laryngeal carcinoma. We looked for possible correlations between expression of SHP-2 in laryngeal carcinoma and clinical staging and lymph node metastasis. Immunochemical staining results revealed that the SHP-2 expression was significantly higher (88.24%) in laryngeal carcinoma than in normal mucosal tissue (25%). Additionally, the expression of SHP-2 was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis, but not with clinical stage and gender of patients with laryngeal carcinoma. Therefore, SHP-2 may be useful as a prognostic marker for laryngeal carcinoma and as a therapeutic target in laryngeal carcinoma treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Convergent studies provide support for abnormalities in the structure and functioning of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and the amygdala, the key components of the neural system that subserves emotional processing in major depressive disorder (MDD). We used resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine potential amygdala-PFC functional connectivity abnormalities in treatment-naive subjects with MDD. METHODS Resting-state fMRI data were acquired from 28 individuals with MDD and 30 healthy control (HC) subjects. Amygdala-PFC functional connectivity was compared between the MDD and HC groups. RESULTS Decreased functional connectivity to the left ventral PFC (VPFC) from the left and right amygdala was observed in the MDD group, compared with the HC group (p < 0.05, corrected). CONCLUSIONS The treatment-naive subjects with MDD showed decreased functional connectivity from the amygdala to the VPFC, especially to the left VPFC. This suggests that these connections may play an important role in the neuropathophysiology of MDD at its onset.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A hematopoietic deficit is a serious complication after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. It has been shown that fetal blood-derived endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) can promote hematopoietic reconstitution after transplantation. This study investigated whether EPCs from bone marrow (BM) of adult mice could promote hematopoietic reconstitution. METHODS Lethally irradiated BALB/c mice were administered BM cells or BM cells plus EPCs. RESULTS The results showed that EPC-treated mice displayed accelerated recovery of peripheral blood white blood cells and reticulocytes. But the platelets were not significantly different with versus without EPCs. Accelerated recovery of BM sinusoidal vessels, promotion of stem cell implantation, and decreased adipocyte formation were associated with the mechanism. Systemic administration of anti-vascular endothelial cadherin antibody neutralized these effects significantly. CONCLUSION These data showed that BM-derived EPC infusions augmented hematopoiesis suggesting a new approach to promote hematopoiesis.

Abstract
We describe a case-control study performed in Jiangsu, China, to evaluate risk factors for human infection with novel avian influenza A(H7N9) virus. Twenty-five cases and 93 controls matched by age, sex, and location were included in the study. Direct contact with poultry or birds in the two weeks before illness onset, chronic medical conditions (hypertension excluded), and environment-related exposures were significantly associated with A(H7N9) infection.

Abstract
We investigated the microbial genetic diversity and ciliate community in coastal soil from five sites with an environmental gradient using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), gene sequencing and the Ludox-QPS method. The analyses of both the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene and 18S rRNA gene DGGE resulted in equal or even a higher number of bands found in the samples taken from the high-salinity sites IV and V than in those taken from the low-to-moderate-salinity sites I-III. Cluster analysis of both DGGE profiles classified the five sites into three main groups (sites I, II and III and IV and V), which corresponded well to the analysis of environmental factors. There were 13 species observed at site I, three species at site II and nine species at site III, while no active ciliates were observed at the high-salinity sites IV and V. By contrast, the ciliate-specific DGGE revealed a higher number of bands in the samples taken from the high-salinity soil. Furthermore, gene sequencing suggested that the ciliates in the high-salinity soil comprised forms originating not only from soil but also from marine environments. The data indicate that saline soil may maintain a high diversity of ciliates and soil salinity might be the most influential factor regulating the community structure of ciliates.

The rheological and mechanical properties of PVC-lignin blends were studied, and their alterations were investigated after lignin was treated with poly(ethyl acrylate-co-maleic anhydride). The addition of lignin changes the early rheological properties of the blend comparing with PVC control because the rigidity of lignin particles leads to more intensive shearing in the system, but has little effect on its rheology during the equilibrium period. The processing stability slightly decreases with the increase of lignin content in the blend. The mechanical properties of the blends are worse than that of PVC control. The rheological properties of the blends are little influenced after lignin is treated with polyacrylate, but the mechanical properties, especially toughness, are improved, and the maximum impact strength is 37.7% higher than that of PVC control.

Abstract
The Yellow River delta in China is one of the most active regions of land-ocean interaction. It has suffered serious salinization due to drying-up of the Yellow River, rising sea level, and seashore erosion, and thus represents a special and extreme environment. We evaluated the microeukaryotic molecular diversity and its response to change of seasons and environmental variables, in particular salinity in the soil of the Yellow River delta, by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and gene sequencing. The sequencing of the microeukaryotic DGGE bands revealed the presence of diverse groups dominated by protists in particular ciliates. We further recovered a high diversity of marine and soil ciliates inhabiting in coastal soil using the ciliate-specific DGGE. The neighbor-joining tree indicated that the ciliate 18S rDNA sequences from high-salinity soil were affiliated to Colpodea, Spirotrichea, Litostomatea, and Oligohymenophorea, while all the sequences unique to the low-salinity soil were affiliated to Colpodea. Statistical analysis indicated that the microeukaryotic molecular diversity was significantly different among sites, while statistically indistinguishable among seasons. Soil salinity might be the main factor regulating the distribution of microeukaryotes in the soil from the Yellow River delta.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC), also known as osteonectin, plays an important role in osteoblast formation, maturation, and survival. Here, we report the effects of recombinant human parathyroid hormone (1-34) [rhPTH (1-34)], a bone formation-stimulating agent, and elcatonin on plasma SPARC levels in patients with osteoporosis. The rhPTH (1-34) treatment significantly increased plasma SPARC levels, and the change of plasma SPARC correlated positively with changes of lumbar bone mineral density (BMD) at L2-L4. These results unveil that SPARC may be a novel marker related to the regulation of bone formation. INTRODUCTION rhPTH (1-34) is known to influence osteoclast maturation and activity through modulation of osteoblast-derived cytokines. SPARC is the most abundant noncollagenous extracellular matrix protein in the bone. So far, however, no study has reported the effects of rhPTH (1-34) administration on plasma SPARC levels in patients with osteoporosis. The purpose of this study was to compare the response of SPARC and BMD to rhPTH (1-34) and elcatonin in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. METHODS Women were randomized to either once-daily subcutaneous injection of rhPTH (1-34) (20 μg, N = 89) or once-weekly intramuscular injection of elcatonin (200 U, N = 35) for 12 months. Plasma biochemical markers of bone turnover and BMD were measured at baseline, 6 and 12 months after treatment. RESULTS At baseline, plasma SPARC levels correlated positively with lumbar spine BMD in all patients (r = 0.45, p = 0.001). Compared with baseline, at 12 months, rhPTH (1-34) significantly increased lumbar spine BMD and plasma SPARC levels (p = 0.008 and p = 0.001, respectively), whereas elcatonin was ineffective. More importantly, the changes of plasma SPARC correlated positively with changes of lumbar BMD at L2-L4 (r = 0.47, p = 0.001) in the rhPTH (1-34)-treated group, but not in the elcatonin group. CONCLUSION The increase in plasma SPARC levels during the rhPTH (1-34) treatment may have contributed to the anabolic effect on bone formation, and SPARC may be a novel marker related to the regulation of bone formation.

Abstract
Methods were investigated for biofilm regeneration on carriers in a moving bed biofilm reactor used for vitamin C production wastewater treatment. Three ordinary chemical cleaning agents (hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, and sodium hypochlorite) and physical drying were chosen for evaluation as methods for biofilm detachment. The results showed that these methods all had some degree of biofilm removal effectiveness. Treatment with 3% hydrochloric acid (w/w) achieved the maximum degree of biofilm detachment, at 75.2%. Biofilm biomass re-formed on carriers, from the maximum degree of biofilm detachment, quickly by an increase of 76.17 g m(-2) month(-1). It was concluded that treatment with 3% acid was the best choice for biofilm removal and regeneration.

Abstract
A taxonomic study of Eunice species based on material deposited in the Marine Biological Museum of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (MBMCAS) including recently collected specimens from coastal regions of Hainan Island, yielded two new species: Eunice hainanensis n. sp. and E. carrerai n. sp. Both species were collected from dead coral rocks in the reefs of the coastal region of Hainan Island, northern South China Sea. Eunice hainanensis has translucent bidentate subacicular hooks and branchiae present over an extensive region of the body. Within the Eunice group possessing these characters, the new species highly resembles E. schizobranchia Claparède, 1870 in having a numerous chaetigers and a very late start of branchiae (348-570 chaetigers with branchiae from chaetigers 69-72 vs. 731 chaetigers with branchiae from chaetiger 67). However, the two species differ by the presence of the maxillary plate VI (MxVI) in the new species (vs. absent in the latter). Besides, E. hainanensis is much smaller (1.7-1.9 mm vs. 5 mm in maximal width). Eunice carrerai belongs to the Eunice group that has dark bidentate subacicular hooks and branchiae present over an extensive region of the body. It can be distinguished from similar congeners that have the branchiae starting from chaetigers 3-4 and prostomial appendages with moniliform articulations by a combination of characters such as the presence of MxVI, notopodial articulations limited to anterior chaetigers, peristomial cirri articulated and extending to anterior edge of first peristomial ring. A key to 16 species of Eunice identified from China seas in the material examined with notes on their distribution is provided. The major characters of these species are briefly summarized.

Abstract
Two acontiate sea anemones, Phytocoetes sinensis n. sp. within the family Halcampactinidae and Telmatactis clavata (Stimpson, 1855) within the family Andvakiidae, are described from the coastal region of Chinese waters. Phytocoetes sinensis is an elongated sea anemone discovered from the intertidal mudflat in the East China Sea. The new species is very similar to its only congener P. gangeticus, but differs distinctly by the larger body size (length usually 61-130 mm vs. no more than 30 mm) and a higher number of mesenteries (48 pairs vs. 12 or probably 24 pairs) and tentacles (usually 72-118 vs. 50-65). This is the first record of Halcampactinidae in China. Telmatactis clavata has been reported only from the warm waters of Japan. We redescribed the species in more details based on specimens collected from the South China Sea. So far the species is known only from warm waters in the western Pacific.
