[Clinical study of mature B-cell lymphoma in 11 children with chromosome 11 long-arm abnormalities]

Objective: To explore the clinical, pathological, diagnostic, treatment, and prognostic features of children with mature B-cell lymphoma (MBCL) . Methods: This retrospective study included pediatric patients with MBCL with chromosome 11 long-arm abnormalities who were diagnosed and treated at our hospital from December 2018 to February 2023. Results: Among the 11 pediatric patients with MBCL, nine were male and two were female, with a median age of 9 (2-13) years and a median disease course of 1.8 (0.5-24) months. The clinical manifestations were cervical lymph node enlargement in four patients, nasal congestion and snoring in four patients, abdominal pain in two patients, and difficulty breathing in one patient. There were seven cases of Burkitt's lymphoma, two of follicular lymphoma, and two of advanced B-cell lymphoma according to the pathological morphology examination. No patients had central nervous system or bone marrow involvement, and no extensive metastasis was observed on B-ultrasound or positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT). One patient had a huge tumor lesion. The Revised International Pediatric Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Staging System classified four patients as stage Ⅱ, five as stage Ⅲ, and two as stage Ⅳ. 11q probe detection showed five cases of 11q gain, three of 11q loss, and three of both gain and loss. FISH showed positive MYC expression in three patients, including eight with advanced B-cell lymphoma with 11q abnormalities and three with Burkitt's lymphoma with 11q abnormalities. According to the 2019 edition of the National Health Commission's diagnostic and treatment guidelines for invasive MBCL in children, one patient was classified as Group A, two as Group B, and eight as Group C. Early evaluation of the efficacy showed complete remission. After mid-term evaluation, the intensity of chemotherapy was reduced in Group B and Group C. Among two cases of chemotherapy, the remaining nine cases had a median follow-up of 32 (6-45) months, and none had event-related survival. Conclusion: The incidence of MBCL with 11q abnormalities in children is low, clinical symptoms are mild, and progression is slow. The absence of MYC, BCL2, BCL6 rearrangements, C-MYC negative and 11q abnormalities on FISH is an important diagnostic indicator, and reducing the intensity of chemotherapy can improve prognosis.

Rabies virus-based barcoded neuroanatomy resolved by single-cell RNA and in situ sequencing

Mapping the connectivity of diverse neuronal types provides the foundation for understanding the structure and function of neural circuits. High-throughput and low-cost neuroanatomical techniques based on RNA barcode sequencing have the potential to map circuits at cellular resolution and a brain-wide scale, but existing Sindbis virus-based techniques can only map long-range projections using anterograde tracing approaches. Rabies virus can complement anterograde tracing approaches by enabling either retrograde labeling of projection neurons or monosynaptic tracing of direct inputs to genetically targeted postsynaptic neurons. However, barcoded rabies virus has so far been only used to map non-neuronal cellular interactions in vivo and synaptic connectivity of cultured neurons. Here we combine barcoded rabies virus with single-cell and in situ sequencing to perform retrograde labeling and transsynaptic labeling in the mouse brain. We sequenced 96 retrogradely labeled cells and 295 transsynaptically labeled cells using single-cell RNA-seq, and 4,130 retrogradely labeled cells and 2,914 transsynaptically labeled cells in situ. We found that the transcriptomic identities of rabies virus-infected cells can be robustly identified using both single-cell RNA-seq and in situ sequencing. By associating gene expression with connectivity inferred from barcode sequencing, we distinguished long-range projecting cortical cell types from multiple cortical areas and identified cell types with converging or diverging synaptic connectivity. Combining in situ sequencing with barcoded rabies virus complements existing sequencing-based neuroanatomical techniques and provides a potential path for mapping synaptic connectivity of neuronal types at scale.

False negative result of polymerase chain reaction in very early stages of acute retinal necrosis

BACKGROUND

Viral nucleic acid testing of intraocular fluid using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a major laboratory examination in the diagnosis of acute retinal necrosis (ARN). Importantly, false negative PCR results may occur in several special situations. We reported a case of ARN with a negative PCR result in the aqueous humour in the very early stages of disease.

CASE PRESENTATION

A female patient presented to the ophthalmologist with complaints of blurred vision and redness in her left eye. Her medical history included ARN in her right eye 10 years prior. Although the result of the aqueous viral analysis by PCR in her left eye was negative the first time (one day after the appearance of ocular symptoms), ARN in her left eye was presumed based on the clinical signs. With timely antiviral and anti-inflammatory treatments, the retinal lesions diminished. The viral load of herpes simplex virus (HSV) turned positive (7.25 × 103 copies/mL) one week later, increased to 2.49 × 105 copies/mL after three weeks, and finally turned negative about five weeks after the onset of disease. The initial HSV-IgG level in the aqueous humour was 0.01 U/mL and increased to 222.64 U/mL in the final sampling.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of PCR analysis can be negative in the very early stages of ARN. Diagnosis of ARN should be made based on the clinical features, and antiviral treatments should not be delayed. Repeated PCR analysis of the aqueous humour is necessary to confirm the diagnosis and monitor the disease process.

Relativistic ultrafast electron diffraction at high repetition rates

The ability to resolve the dynamics of matter on its native temporal and spatial scales constitutes a key challenge and convergent theme across chemistry, biology, and materials science. The last couple of decades have witnessed ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) emerge as one of the forefront techniques with the sensitivity to resolve atomic motions. Increasingly sophisticated UED instruments are being developed that are aimed at increasing the beam brightness in order to observe structural signatures, but so far they have been limited to low average current beams. Here, we present the technical design and capabilities of the HiRES (High Repetition-rate Electron Scattering) instrument, which blends relativistic electrons and high repetition rates to achieve orders of magnitude improvement in average beam current compared to the existing state-of-the-art instruments. The setup utilizes a novel electron source to deliver femtosecond duration electron pulses at up to MHz repetition rates for UED experiments. Instrument response function of sub-500 fs is demonstrated with < 100 fs time resolution targeted in future. We provide example cases of diffraction measurements on solid-state and gas-phase samples, including both micro- and nanodiffraction (featuring 100 nm beam size) modes, which showcase the potential of the instrument for novel UED experiments.

Saikosaponin A alleviates Staphylococcus aureus-induced mastitis in mice by inhibiting ferroptosis via SIRT1/Nrf2 pathway

Mastitis is a common and serious bacterial infection of the mammary gland. Saikosaponin A (SSA) is a triterpenoid saponin isolated from Bupleurum falcatum that has the ability to treat various diseases. However, little is known about the role of SSA in achieving mastitis remission. Here, we found that SSA alleviated Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)-induced mastitis by attenuating inflammation and maintaining blood-milk barrier integrity. Furthermore, S. aureus activated nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathway by upregulated p-p65 and p-IκB. S. aureus also induced ferroptosis in mammary gland in mice, mainly characterized by excessive iron accumulation, mitochondrial morphological changes and impaired antioxidant production. However, S. aureus-induced NF-κB activation and ferroptosis were prevented by SSA. Moreover, SAA could upregulate the expression of SIRT1, Nrf2, HO-1 and GPX4. And the inhibitory effects of SAA on inflammation and ferroptosis were reversed by SIRT1 inhibitor EX-527. In conclusion, SAA protected S. aureus-induced mastitis through suppressing inflammation and ferroptosis by activating SIRT1/Nrf2 pathway.

Caveolin-1 protects against liver damage exacerbated by acetaminophen in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease by inhibiting the ERK/HIF-1α pathway

Acetaminophen (APAP) is a common antipyretic and analgesic drug that can cause long-term liver damage after an overdose. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) increases susceptibility to APAP. In NAFLD, excessive accumulation of lipids leads to an abnormal increase in hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α). Caveolin-1 (CAV1) may protect against NAFLD by inhibiting HIF-1α. This research aimed to determine whether CAV1 could attenuate APAP-exacerbated liver injury in NAFLD by inhibiting oxidative stress involving HIF-1α. In this study, 7-week-old C57BL/6 mice were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for eight weeks, followed by the instillation of APAP. Levels of oxidative stress and liver lipid deposition were determined, and p-ERK1/2 and HIF-1α protein expression were measured by the Western blot (WB) method. In the APAP-treated group, the level of CAV1 was decreased, while the levels of HIF-1α and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were significantly increased. AML12 cells were treated with a mixture of palmitic acid (PA) and oleic acid (OA) (1:2 mix) for 48 h, and APAP was added for the last 24 h. Overexpression of CAV1 in AML12 cells significantly inhibited the expression of ROS and HIF-1α. And the results of immunofluorescence after treatment with CAV1-SiRNA showed that the HIF-1α levels were significantly increased in mitochondria. In conclusion, our experimental results suggest that CAV1 has a protective function in the fatty liver based on preventing oxidative stress, which involves HIF-1α. Thus, upregulation of CAV1 may attenuate APAP-exacerbated liver injury in NAFLD.

The impact of internet use in the digital age on the subjective well-being of older adults -- an empirical study based on CGSS2021 data

The main objective of this study is the effect of Internet use on the subjective well-being of older adults. Based on the China General Social Survey 2021 cross-sectional data, 11 variables were selected from the perspective of sociology and demography. These variables include one dependent variable, three independent variables, and seven control variables. A binary logistic model was used to study the effects of the three dimensions of Internet use in the digital age (independent variables) on the subjective well-being of the elderly (dependent variable) with the elderly as the research object (N = 1836). The results of the study revealed that Internet use (P < 0.001, Exp(B) = 1.567), information sources (P < 0.001, Exp(B) = 1.695), and frequency of Internet use (P < 0.001, Exp(B) = 0.858) of the elderly had significant effects on their subjective well-being. To improve the subjective well-being of the elderly in the digital era, this paper proposes the following suggestions and countermeasures: 1) strengthen the digital infrastructure for the elderly and create an "Internet + elderly" model; 2) formulate relevant protective policies to promote Internet use among the elderly; 3) regulate the frequency of Internet access to maintain a balance between the virtual and real world. Conclusion: A thoughtful digitalization approach for the elderly can ensure they keep up with the times, bridge the "digital divide" between generations, extend their working lives, and enhance their subjective well-being. This study has some limitations. The object of the study is only the elderly in China, while the elderly in every country in the world have certain differences in subjective or objective conditions.

Estradiol on trigger day: Irrelevant to live birth rates of fresh cycles but positively associated with cumulative live birth rates

OBJECTIVE

To assess the effects of estradiol (E2) on trigger day on cumulative live birth rates (CLBRs), and pregnancy outcomes after fresh and frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET).

METHODS

This multicenter retrospective cohort study included 42 315 patients from five reproductive centers. Six subgroups were divided according to E2 on trigger day (<1000, 1000-2000, 2000-3000, 3000-4000, 4000-5000, >5000 pg/mL). Smooth curve fitting and nonlinear mixed-effects models were used.

RESULTS

When E2 was <5500 pg/mL, the CLBR increased by 10% for every 1000 pg/mL increase in E2. When E2 was between 5500 and 13 281 pg/mL, CLBR increased by 1.8% for every 1000 pg/mL increase in E2. When E2 was >13 281 pg/mL, CLBR decreased by 3% for every 1000 pg/mL increase in E2. From group E2 < 1000 to group E2 > 5000 pg/mL, pregnancy and live birth rates in fresh cycles were not related to E2. The live birth rate after FET was higher in the E2 ≥ 5000 pg/mL group than in the E2 < 1000 pg/mL group (odds ratio [OR] 4.03, and 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.74-4.35; adjusted OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.05-1.37).

CONCLUSION

CLBR is associated with E2 on trigger day in a segmented manner. Pregnancy and live birth rates in fresh cycles were not associated with E2. The live birth rate in FET cycles was highest when E2 ≥ 5000 pg/mL.

The Mechanism and Fine-Tuning of Chiral Plexcitons in the Strong Coupling Regime

Chiral plexcitons, produced by the strong interaction between plasmonic nanocavities and chiral molecules, can provide a promising direction for controlling chiroptical responses on the nanoscale. Here, we reveal the chiral origin and electromagnetic hybridization process in chiral strongly coupled systems. The mechanism and unique advantages of chiral plexcitons for fine-tuning circular dichroism (CD) responses are demonstrated, providing a rule for controlling chiral light-matter interactions in complex chiral nanosystems. Furthermore, we experimentally demonstrate the fine-tuning of chiral plexcitons in hybrid systems consisting of plasmonic nanoparticles and chiral J-aggregates. Continuous and precise tuning of the CD resonance positions was successfully achieved in a given structure. Compared with the previous work, the CD spectral tuning accuracy has been improved by an order of magnitude, which can reach the level of 1 nm. Our findings provide a feasible strategy and theoretical basis for accurately controlling chirality in multiple dimensions.

Tipping points of nitrogen use efficiency in freshwater phytoplankton along trophic state gradient

Eutrophication and harmful algal blooms have severe effects on water quality and biodiversity in lakes and reservoirs. Ecological regime shifts of phytoplankton blooms are generally thought to be driven by the rapidly rising nutrient use efficiency of bloom-forming species over short periods, and often exhibit nonlinear dynamics. Regime shifts of trophic state, eutrophication, stratification, and clear or turbid waters are well-studied topics in aquatic ecology. However, information on the prevalence of regime shifts in relationships between trophic states and phytoplankton resource transfer efficiencies in ecosystems is still lacking. Here, we provided a first insight into regime shifts in nitrogen use efficiency of phytoplankton along the trophic state gradient. We explored the regime shifts of phytoplankton resource use efficiency and detected the tipping points by combining four temporal or spatial datasets from tropical to temperate zones in Asia and Europe. We first observed significant abrupt transitions (abruptness > 1) in phytoplankton nitrogen use efficiency along the trophic state gradient. The tipping point values were lower in subtropical/tropical waterbodies (mesotrophic states; TSIc: around 50) than those in temperate zones (eutrophic states; TSIc: 60-70). The regime shifts significantly reduced the primary production transfer efficiency via zooplankton (from 0.15 ± 0.03 to 0.03 ± 0.01; mean ± standard error) in the aquatic food web. Nitrogen-fixing filamentous cyanobacteria can drive eutrophication under mesotrophic state. Our findings imply that the time-window of opportunity for harmful algae prevention and control in lakes and reservoirs is earlier in subtropical/tropical regions.

Diosmetin alleviates S. aureus-induced mastitis by inhibiting SIRT1/GPX4 mediated ferroptosis

AIMS

Microbial infection is the main factor that induces mastitis. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a major pathogen associated with mastitis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of diosmetin on S. aureus-induced mastitis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The mice were divided into six groups: control group, S. aureus group, diosmetin (12.5, 25, 50 mg/kg) + S. aureus groups, and diosmetin (50 mg/kg) + S. aureus + EX-527 (10 mg/kg) group. S. aureus was injected into the mammary gland to establish a mouse mastitis model. Diosmetin was administered 1 h before S. aureus treatment.

KEY FINDINGS

Our results showed that diosmetin significantly alleviated the pathological changes of mammary gland induced by S. aureus. Diosmetin alleviated myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity, and the release of TNF-α and IL-1β, and nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) activation. Moreover, diosmetin inhibited malondialdehyde (MDA) and Fe2+ levels induced by S. aureus. Diosmetin upregulated ATP, glutathione (GSH) production and glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) expression, which were decreased by S. aureus. Furthermore, the expression of Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), nuclear factor erythroid2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1) was upregulated by diosmetin. In addition, the inhibitory effects of diosmetin on S. aureus-induced inflammation and ferroptosis were prevented by the SIRT1 inhibitor EX-527.

SIGNIFICANCE

In conclusion, the data indicated that diosmetin suppressed S. aureus-induced mastitis by attenuating inflammation and ferroptosis.

Drumhead surface states promoted hydrogen evolution reactions in type-II nodal-line topological catalyst Mg3Bi2

An excellent catalyst generally meets three indicators: high electron mobility, high surface density of states and low Gibbs free energy (ΔG) [H. Luo et al. Nat. Rev. Phys., 2022, 4, 611-624]. Recent studies have confirmed that topological materials exhibit more advantages than conventional precious metals with regard to the above-mentioned indicators. Herein, based on DFT calculations and symmetry analysis, we discovered for the first time that the topological surface states of Mg3Bi2 with a Kagome lattice promote hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). In particular, there exists a snake-like type-II nodal loop (NL), located on kz = 0 plane in Mg3Bi2. Besides, the NL forms a topologically protected drumhead surface state on the (001) surface. It was found that the ΔG (0.176 eV) value of the (001) surface is comparable to that of the precious metal Pt. Then, through hole doping and strain regulation, it was found that the catalytic activity of Mg3Bi2 is closely related to the drumhead surface state formed by NL. With the above-mentioned results, this study not only provides a promising candidate material for hydrogen electrolysis, but also deepens our understanding of the dominant factors of NL semimetals for the catalytic activity.

Investigation of Erase Cycling Induced Joint Dummy Cell Disturbance in Dual-Deck 3D NAND Flash Memory

To satisfy the increasing demands for more word-line (WL) layers, the dual-deck even triple-deck architecture has emerged in 3D NAND Flash. However, the new reliability issues that occurred at the joint region of two decks became a severe challenge for developing multiple-deck technology. This work reported an abnormal reliability issue introduced by erasing disturbance of the dummy WLs at the joint region (Joint-DMYs) under multiple cycling. More specifically, after several erase cycling stresses, the increasing joint-DMY's threshold voltage (Vt) due to the operational stress will finally result in additional disturbance to the adjacent data WLs. In this paper, we proposed this disturbance during erase originates from the backward injected electrons through FN tunneling based on our TCAD simulation result. Moreover, we also proposed an optimal erase scheme to reduce the backward electron injection and suppress the abnormal joint-DMY disturbance during the erase cycling.

SMYD2 Imparts Gemcitabine Resistance to Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Cells by Upregulating EVI2A

Although gemcitabine (GEM) is the first‑line drug for advanced pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD), the development of GEM resistance severely limits the effectiveness of this chemotherapy. This study investigated the mechanisms of ecotropic viral integration site 2 A (EVI2A) for resistance to GEM and immune evasion in PAAD. GEM resistance-related biomarkers were predicted using GEO datasets, and GEM-resistant PAAD cells were generated. EVI2A was found expressed highly in GEM-resistant PAAD cells. Gain-of-function analyses revealed that EVI2A encouraged the proliferation and motility of GEM-resistant cells and prevented apoptosis. In addition, EVI2A reduced T cell effector activation. SMYD2 was overexpressed in GEM-resistant cells, and SMYD2 enhanced H3K36me2 modification of EVI2A, thereby promoting EVI2A expression. SMYD2 reduced the sensitivity of GEM-resistant cells, which was reversed by EVI2A knockdown. SMYD2 increased the amount of M2 macrophages (co-cultured with PAAD cells) and decreased T cell effector activation (co-cultured with macrophage supernatant), and the number of M2 macrophages was decreased and T cell effectors were activated following EVI2A knockdown. Our findings indicate that EVI2A, manipulated by the SMYD2-H3K36me2 epigenetic axis, promoted GEM resistance and M2 macrophage-mediated immune evasion in PAAD. Therefore, EVI2A might represent a therapeutic target for overcoming GEM resistance and immunosuppressive environment in PAAD.

The Effect of Latent Tuberculosis Infection on Ovarian Reserve and Pregnancy Outcomes among Infertile Women Undergoing Intrauterine Insemination: A Retrospective Cohort Study with Propensity Score Matching

Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) widely exists in patients with unexplained infertility, and whether LTBI would affect the ovarian reserve and pregnancy outcome of infertile women undergoing intrauterine insemination (IUI) is still unknown. A single-center, retrospective, cohort study was designed that included infertile women undergoing IUI at the Department of Reproductive Medicine, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, from January 2018 to December 2020. The primary outcomes of this study were ovarian reserve and live birth rate. Secondary outcomes included pregnancy outcomes and maternal and neonatal complications. As a result, 3066 IUI cycles were eventually enrolled in this study. Of these women, 9.6% (295/3066) had LTBI evidence. After propensity score matching (PSM), there was no significant difference in the baseline between the LTBI and non-LTBI groups. The data showed that women who had LTBI had trends toward lower biochemical pregnancy rates (12.9% vs. 17.7%, p-value 0.068), lower clinical pregnancy rates (10.8% vs. 15.1%, p-value 0.082) and lower live birth rates (8.1% vs. 12.1%, p-value 0.076), with no significant differences. There were also no significant differences in ovarian reserve and other secondary outcomes between the two groups. In conclusion, there were no significant differences in ovarian reserve, perinatal or neonatal complications between women with and without LTBI. Women with LTBI tended to have worse pregnancy outcomes after receiving IUI, but the difference was not significant.

Surface engineering of two-dimensional hexagonal boron-nitride for optoelectronic devices

Two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (2D h-BN) is being extensively studied in optoelectronic devices due to its electronic and photonic properties. However, the controlled optimization of h-BN's insulating properties is necessary to fully explore its potential in energy conversion and storage devices. In this work, we engineered the surface of h-BN nanoflakes via one-step in situ chemical functionalization using a liquid-phase exfoliation approach. The functionalized h-BN (F-h-BN) nanoflakes were subsequently dispersed on the surface of TiO2 to tune the TiO2/QDs interface of the optoelectronic device. The photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices based on TiO2/F-h-BN/QDs with optimized addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and scattering layers showed 46% improvement compared to the control device (TiO2/QDs). This significant improvement is attributed to the reduced trap/carrier recombination and enhanced carrier injection rate of the TiO2-CNTs/F-h-BN/QDs photoanode. Furthermore, by employing an optimized TiO2-CNTs/F-h-BN/QDs photoanode, QDs-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs) yield an 18% improvement in photoconversion efficiency. This represents a potential and adaptability of our approach, and pathway to explore surface-engineered 2D materials to optimize the interface of solar energy conversion and other emerging optoelectronic devices.

Hepatic vitamin D receptor expression is negatively associated with liver inflammation and fibrosis in patients with chronic HBV infection

The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is a nuclear transcription factor that acts as the main transducer in response to vitamin D (VD), regulating about 3% of the gene expression in the human genome. This study investigated the expression of VDR in the liver of patients with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and determined its correlation with liver inflammation and fibrosis. We evaluated the effects of HBV infection on the expression of VDR in vivo and in vitro and further investigate the potential mechanism. Subsequently, the associations between hepatic VDR expression with liver inflammation and fibrosis were statistically analyzed. Results showed that hepatic VDR expression was significantly decreased in patients with chronic HBV infection as compared to healthy individuals. Similarly, in vitro experiments further confirmed that HBV infection could inhibit the expression of VDR in hepatocytes. Mechanistically, HBV was able to directly induce the expression of miR-125a which inhibited the mRNA and protein levels of VDR. Statistical analysis showed that hepatic VDR expression was significantly negatively correlated with liver inflammation and fibrosis in patients. We conclude that inhibition of hepatic vitamin D receptor expression by HBV/miR-125a is negatively associated with liver inflammation and fibrosis in patients with chronic HBV infection.

Application of artificial intelligence in gametes and embryos selection

Gamete and embryo quality are critical to the success rate of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) cycles, but there remains a lack of methods to accurately measure the quality of sperm, oocytes and embryos. The ability of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to analyze large amounts of data, especially video and images, is particularly useful in gamete and embryo assessment and selection. The well-trained model has fast calculation speed and high accuracy, which can help embryologists to perform more objective gamete and embryo selection. Various artificial intelligence models have been developed for gamete and embryo assessment, some of which exhibit good performance. In this review, we summarize the latest applications of AI technology in semen analysis, as well as selection for sperm, oocyte and embryo, and discuss the existing problems and development directions of artificial intelligence in this field.

An additive manufacturing approach based on electrohydrodynamic printing to fabricate P3HT:PCBM thin films

Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the production of high value and high performance components with applications from aerospace to biomedical fields. We report here on the fabrication of poly(3-hexylthiophene): phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) thin films through the electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) process and its integration as absorber layer for organic solar cells. Prior to the film fabrication, the optimization of the process was carried out by developing the operating envelope for the P3HT:PCBM ink to determine the optimal flow rate and the appropriate applied voltage to achieve a stable-cone deposition mode. The EHDA printed thin-film's topography, morphology and optical properties were systematically analyzed. The root-mean-square roughness was found to vary significantly with the annealing temperature and the flow rate and ranged from 1.938 to 3.345 nm. The estimated film mass and thickness were found between 3.235 and 23.471 mg and 597.5 nm to 1.60 µm, respectively. The films exhibited a broad visible absorption spectrum ranging from ~ 340 to ~ 600 nm, with a maximum peak λmax located at ~ 500 nm. As the annealing temperature and the flow rate were increased, discernible alterations in the PCBM clusters were consequently observed in the blends of the film and the size of the PCBM clusters has decreased by 3% while the distance between them was highly reduced by as much as 82%.

[Early results of modified Bikini approach periacetabular osteotomy for the treatment of developmental hip dysplasia under 50 years of age]

Objective: To investigate the efficacy and safety of modified Bikini approach periacetabular osteotomy in the treatment of developmental hip dysplasia under 50 years of age. Methods: The clinical data of 39 patients with developmental hip dysplasia who underwent periacetabular osteotomy in the Department of Orthopedics, Guizhou Provincial People's Hospital from June 2016 to June 2021 were retrospectively analyzed.Among them, 20 patients (21 hips) underwent the improved Bikini approach (study group) and 19 patients (20 hips) underwent the improved Smith-Petersen approach (control group).In the study group, there were 3 males and 17 females, aged(M(IQR))27.5 (14.3) years (range:11 to 44 years).In the control group, there were 2 males and 17 females, aged 27.5 (19.3) years (range:17 to 47 years).Both groups were sutured in the same manner by the same physician.Incision length, operation time, intraoperative blood loss and complications were recorded.X-ray images, anterior central marginal angle (ACE), lateral central marginal Angle (LCE) and acetabulum tilt angle (Tonnis AI) were measured before and after the operation.The coverage rate of acetabulum to femoral head (AHI) was measured and calculated, and the healing time was observed.Harris Hip score, International Hip score (IHOT)-12 and visual analogue scale (VAS) were recorded before and after surgery.Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) score and patient and observer scar assessment scale (POSAS) score were recorded 12 months after surgery.The independent sample t test,Wilcoxon rank sum test, χ2 test or Fisher exact test were used to compare the clinical efficacy between the two groups. Results: All patients successfully completed the operation.There was no significant difference in operation time and intraoperative blood loss between the two groups (all P>0.05).The incision length of the study group was smaller than that of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (10.5(5.0)cm vs.15.0(3.0),W=309.000,P=0.007).Patients were followed up for (19.1±11.1) months (range:12 to 60 months).Femoral nerve stretching injury occurred in 2 cases and sciatic branch fracture occurred in 1 case in the study group, all of which recovered to normal at 3 months follow-up, while no corresponding injury occurred in the control group.Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve injury occurred in 3 cases in the study group and 2 cases in the control group.Delayed wound healing occurred in 1 case in each of the two groups, and both healed after re-operation debridement and suture.Pubic branch nonunion occurred in 4 patients in the study group and 5 patients in the control group.There were no serious complications such as sciatic nerve and femoral blood vessel injury between the 2 groups, and there was no statistical significance in the incidence of complications between the 2 groups (52.4%(11/21)vs.40.0%(8/20),χ2=0.631,P=0.427).The clinical healing time of the patient was (4.5±1.3) months after surgery (range:3.0 to 8.0 months).There were no significant differences in ACE, LCE, Tonnis AI and AHI between the 2 groups (all P>0.05).At the last follow-up, there were no significant differences in VAS,Harris hip score and IHOT-12 score between the two groups (all P>0.05).The incision scars in the study group were smaller than those in the control group, and the differences in VSS and POSAS were statistically significant (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Compared with the improved Smith-Petersen approach, the improved Bikini approach has the same early clinical efficacy in the treatment of patients with developmental hip dysplasia under the age of 50, and has the advantages of smaller postoperative incision scars, more hidden and beautiful incision, and no serious complications, which is worthy of further study and promotion.

[Research progress and future trends on neurosurgical robots]

Brain surgery requires high flexibility,accuracy,safety,and stability.With radiographic imaging and navigation development,robots have been introduced into neurosurgery.Nowadays,domestic stereotactic surgical robots in China have made significant advancements,which are widely utilized in frameless stereotactic surgeries,including electrode implantation,intracranial biopsy and aspiration drainage.On the international front,classic stereotactic robots dominate the mainstream market.Additionally,emerging magnetic resonance-compatible robots incorporate intelligent techniques such as tremor filtering,motion scaling,obstacle avoidance,and force sensing.The specific future research in the field of neurosurgical robotics will focus on several key areas,such as precise perception,artificial intelligence,telesurgery,and magnetic resonance compatibility for space,materials,driving and imaging.

Plexcitonic optical chirality in the chiral plasmonic structure-microcavity-exciton strong coupling system

Chiral plexcitonic systems exhibit a novel chiroptical phenomenon, which can provide a new route to design chiroptical devices. Reported works focused on the two-mode strong coupling between chiral molecules and nanoparticles, while multiple-mode coupling can provide richer modulation. In this paper, we proposed a three-mode coupling system consisting of a chiral Au helices array, a Fabry-Pérot cavity, and monolayer WSe2, which can provide an extra chiral channel, a more widely tunable region, and more tunable methods compared to two-mode coupled systems. The optical response of this hybrid system was investigated based on the finite element method. Mode splitting observed in the circular dichroism (CD) spectrum demonstrated that the chiroptical response successfully shifted from the resonant position of the chiral structure to three plexcitons through strong coupling, which provided a new route for chiral transfer. Furthermore, we used the coupled oscillator model to obtain the energy and Hopfield coefficients of the plexciton branches to explain the chiroptical phenomenon of the hybrid system. Moreover, the tunability of the hybrid system can be achieved by tuning the temperature and period of the helices array. Our work provides a feasible strategy for chiral sensing and modulation devices.

Investigation of the Connection Schemes between Decks in 3D NAND Flash

Dual-deck stacking technology is an effective solution for solving the contradiction between the demand for increasing storage layers and the challenge of the deep hole etching process in 3D NAND flash. The connection scheme between decks is a key technology for the dual-deck structure. It has become one of the necessary techniques for 3D NAND flash storage density improvement. This article mainly studies the impact of connection schemes between decks on cell reliability. Based on experimental data and simulation analysis, unfavorable effects were found as the gate channeling the breakdown and data retention characteristics of the top cells in the lower deck deteriorated due to the local electric field enhancement in the connection scheme without a poly-plug. This mainly contributed to the structural change of these cells within process impact. They will suffer secondary etching during the upper deck channel etching process due to alignment issues between the upper and lower decks. In another scheme with a poly-plug connection between decks, the saturation current of the channel decreased and the current variation increased. The fundamental cause of the current anomaly is that the Poly-plug has a certain shielding effect on channel inversion and the weak inversion region becomes a bottleneck for the channel current. The increase in variation is due to the shielding effect differences in the different structures of the poly-plug. Therefore, for the connection scheme without a poly-plug, the article proposes to improve device reliability by increasing the oxide thickness between decks and setting the top cells of the lower decks to be virtual cells. For the connection scheme with a poly-plug, the plug's N-type doping scheme is proposed to avoid the current dropping anomaly.

Prevalence and Trends of Birth Defects - Five Counties, Shanxi Province, China, 2003-2022

The Shanxi Province, located in northern China, holds the highest prevalence of birth defects (BDs) across the country. Following the implementation of a nationwide folic acid supplementation program in 2009, a significant reduction of 53.89% in the prevalence of neural tube defects (NTDs) was observed in Shanxi from 2012 to 2017. However, despite this decrease, the prevalence rate for congenital heart defects (CHDs) in 2017 was over four times that of the 2012 rate. Since 2014, CHDs have emerged as the most predominant BD in Shanxi.

The present study has identified a marked reduction in the prevalence of both total BDs and NTDs in five counties within Shanxi over the past two decades. As of 2017-2022, NTDs continue to be the most prevalent BDs recorded in this region.
