Abstract
Urinary bladder paragangliomas are rare with a reported incidence of <1% of bladder tumors. In the absence of typical clinical features, histopathology helps in rendering definitive diagnosis. We describe a case of nonfunctional urinary bladder paraganglioma in a 28-year-old male who presented with the chief complaint of abdominal pain. The final diagnosis was made by histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis. It is important to distinguish paraganglioma from urothelial carcinoma as the treatment differs. This is an additional case of nonfunctional urinary bladder paraganglioma in a male patient with a brief review of the literature.

Abstract
Purpose
– The combined heat and power dispatch (CHPD) aims to optimize the outputs of online units in a power plant consisting thermal generators, co-generators and heat-only units. Identifying the operating point of a co-generator within its feasible operating region (FOR) is difficult. This paper aims to solve the CHPD problem in static and dynamic environments.
Design/methodology/approach
– The CHPD plant operation is formulated as an optimization problem under static and dynamic load conditions with the objectives of minimizations of cost and emissions subject to various system and operational constraints. A novel bio-inspired search technique, grey wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm is used as an optimization tool.
Findings
– The GWO-based algorithm has been developed to determine the preeminent power and heat dispatch of operating units within the FOR region. The proposed methodology provides fuel cost savings and lesser pollutant emissions than those in earlier reports. Particularly, the GWO always keeps the co-generator’s operating point within the FOR, whereas most of the existing methods fail.
Originality/value
– The GWO is applied for the first time to solve the CHPD problems. New dispatch schedules are reported for 7-unit system with the objectives of total fuel cost and emission minimizations, 24-unit system for economic operation and 11-unit system in dynamic environment. The simulation experiments reveal that GWO converges quickly, consistent and the statistical performance clears its applicability to CHPD problems.

Abstract
The change in water quality arising from the open storage of groundwater (GW) and its impact on chlorination and chlorination by-product formation were investigated. Water quality descriptors, such as temperature, pH, chlorophyll, and dissolved oxygen contents of GW undergo substantial alteration when stored in a reservoir. Dissolved organic content (DOC) measured in the two water sources studied, i.e., GW and open reservoir water (RW), varied from 0.41 mg/L to 0.95 mg/L and 0.93 mg/L to 2.53 mg/L, respectively. Although DOC demonstrated wide variation, UV absorbance at 254 nm (UVA254) values for GW (0.022-0.067) and RW (0.037-0.077) did not display reciprocal variations. The chlorine demand (CD) of RW was always higher than that of GW for the corresponding sampling period. Average trihalomethane (THM) formation for RW was 50-80% higher compared to GW and thus poses an enhanced health risk. Appreciable amounts of bromide present in these water sources (0.15-0.26 mg/L in GW and 0.17-0.65 mg/L in RW) have resulted in the non-selective distribution of the four THM species. The formation of more toxic brominated THM due to chlorination of these near-coast drinking water sources must be regarded as a decisive factor for the choice of water disinfection regime.

Abstract
Genetic and environmental factors contribute to the onset and severity of asthma. Molecular pathogenesis of asthma involves changes in gene expression by a variety of inflammatory mediators acting in autocrine and paracrine fashion on effector cells of the airways. Transcriptional regulation of gene expression in resident airway cells has been studied extensively. However, protein function in a target cell can be regulated at multiple levels starting from transcription followed by post-transcription, translation, and post-translation steps. In this context, small noncoding RNAs known as microRNAs (miRNAs) have evolved as one of the key regulators of gene expression post-transcriptionally. Most importantly, miRNA expression is dynamic in nature and can be regulated by a variety of external stimuli. Altered expression of individual or a group of miRNAs is thought to contribute to human diseases. Recent studies have implicated differential expression of miRNAs in the lungs during inflammation. Most importantly, advanced biochemical and molecular tools could be used to manipulate miRNA expression thereby effecting functional changes in target cells and organ systems. This review summarizes the current understanding of miRNA in the regulation of airway function in health and disease, and highlights the potential clinical utility of mRNAs as biomarkers of airway diseases and as potential therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Recently, the study of ancient DNA (aDNA) has been greatly enhanced by the development of second-generation DNA sequencing technologies and targeted enrichment strategies. These developments have allowed the recovery of several complete ancient genomes, a result that would have been considered virtually impossible only a decade ago. Prior to these developments, aDNA research was largely focused on the recovery of short DNA sequences and their use in the study of phylogenetic relationships, molecular rates, species identification and population structure. However, it is now possible to sequence a large number of modern and ancient complete genomes from a single species and thereby study the genomic patterns of evolutionary change over time. Such a study would herald the beginnings of ancient population genomics and its use in the study of evolution. Species that are amenable to such large-scale studies warrant increased research effort. We report here progress on a population genomic study of the Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae). This species is ideally suited to ancient population genomic research because both modern and ancient samples are abundant in the permafrost conditions of Antarctica. This species will enable us to directly address many of the fundamental questions in ecology and evolution.

Abstract
Androgen deficiency in men increases body fat, but the mechanisms by which testosterone suppresses fat deposition have not been elucidated fully. Adipose tissue macrophages express the androgen receptor (AR) and regulate adipose tissue remodeling. Thus, testosterone signaling in macrophages could alter the paracrine function of these cells and thereby contribute to the metabolic effects of androgens in men. A metabolic phenotyping study was performed to determine whether the loss of AR signaling in hematopoietic cells results in greater fat accumulation in male mice. C57BL/6J male mice (ages 12-14 weeks) underwent bone marrow transplant from either wild-type (WT) or AR knockout (ARKO) donors (n = 11-13 per group). Mice were fed a high-fat diet (60% fat) for 16 weeks. At baseline, 8 and 16 weeks, glucose and insulin tolerance tests were performed, and body composition was analyzed with fat-water imaging by MRI. No differences in body weight were observed between mice transplanted with WT bone marrow [WT(WTbm)] or ARKO bone marrow [WT(ARKObm)] prior to initiation of the high-fat diet. After 8 weeks of high-fat feeding, WT(ARKObm) mice exhibited significantly more visceral and total fat mass than WT(WTbm) animals. Despite this, no differences between groups were observed in glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, or plasma concentrations of insulin, glucose, leptin, or cholesterol, although WT(ARKObm) mice had higher plasma levels of adiponectin. Resultant data indicate that AR signaling in hematopoietic cells influences body fat distribution in male mice, and the absence of hematopoietic AR plays a permissive role in visceral fat accumulation. These findings demonstrate a metabolic role for AR signaling in marrow-derived cells and suggest a novel mechanism by which androgen deficiency in men might promote increased adiposity. The relative contributions of AR signaling in macrophages and other marrow-derived cells require further investigation.

Abstract
Insulin resistance in obesity is believed to be propagated by adipose tissue and liver inflammation. HMGB1 is a multifunctional protein that is pro-inflammatory when released from cells. It has been previously demonstrated that anti-HMGB1 antibody reduces atherosclerotic lesion pro-inflammatory cells and progression of atherosclerosis in a mouse model. To test the potential beneficial role of blocking HMGB1 in adipose tissue and liver inflammation in mice fed an obesogenic diet, we administered anti-HMGB1 antibody to C57Bl/6 mice fed a high (60%)-fat diet. The mice were treated with weekly injections of an anti-HMGB1 antibody or anti-KLH antibody (isotype control) for 16 weeks. Mice that received the anti-HMGB1 antibody gained less weight than the control-treated animals. Anti-HMGB1 treatment also reduced hepatic expression of TNF-alpha and MCP-1, molecules that promote inflammation. However, adipose tissue inflammation, as measured by gene expression analyses and immunohistochemistry, did not differ between the two groups. There also were no differences in glucose or insulin tolerance between the two groups. When feeding mice a high-fat diet, these data suggest that HMGB1 may have a crucial role in weight gain and liver inflammation.

Abstract
Purpose
– The purpose of the paper is to solve hydrothermal scheduling (HTS) problem for energy-efficient management by allocating the optimal real power outputs for thermal and hydroelectric generators.
Design/methodology/approach
– HTS can be formulated as a complex and non-linear optimization problem which minimizes the total fuel cost and emissions of thermal generators subject to various physical and operational constraints. As the artificial bee colony algorithm has proven its ability to solve various engineering optimization problems, it has been used as a main optimization tool to solve the fixed-head HTS problem.
Findings
– A meta-heuristic search technique-based algorithm has been implemented for hydrothermal energy management, and the simulation results show that this approach can provide trade-off between conflict objectives and keep a rapid convergence speed.
Originality/value
– The proposed methodology is implemented on the standard test system, and the numerical results comparison indicates a considerable saving in total fuel cost and reduction in emission.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sea urchin gonad is considered as a highly prized delicacy in several countries. It is also rich in valuable bioactive compounds including polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and β-carotene. This study was undertaken to examine the antimicrobial properties of the ovary extract from sea urchin Diadema setosum against selected Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS The ovary extract was obtained using two different solvents such as methanol and chloroform. The obtained extract was used to examine its potential antimicrobial properties against the following 11 bacterial species using the disc diffusion method: Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella typhi, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aeromonas hydrophila, Acinetobacter sp, Citrobacter freundii and Klebsiella pneumonia) and Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus). The activity was measured in terms of zone of inhibition (mm). RESULTS The methanol extract exhibited a higher zone of inhibition against all the bacteria taken for examination. Whereas, the ovary extract obtained by chloroform did not show any antimicrobial activity against S. typhi, S. epidermidis, C. freundii and K. pneumonia. The results indicated that the ovary extract obtained by methanol extracts are capable of inhibiting the growth of pathogenic microbes taken for analysis. Moreover, the result indicates the presence of antimicrobial agents in sea urchin ovary. CONCLUSIONS The study suggests that the ovary extract of D. setosum may be a potential source of antimicrobial agent for pathogenic microorganisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Selection of an insecticide and its appropriate formulation is a prerequisite of formulating any chemical control strategy against vectors. A hut scale field trial was carried out to study the effectiveness of house spraying with capsule suspension (CS) formulation of lambdacyhalothrin in comparison with its wettable powder (WP) formulation on mortality, density and behaviour of malaria vector in Malkangiri district, Odisha, India. METHODS The two formulations were tested at 20 and 30 mg (a.i.)/m 2 for their effectiveness in terms of deterrence, excito-repellency, blood-feeding success, mortality and residual activity against Anopheles fluviatilis, the major malaria vector, in experimental huts in Malkangiri district, Odisha State, India. RESULTS Both CS and WP formulations prevented the entry of An. fluviatilis in to the sprayed huts by >90 per cent for >6 months, the entire peak malaria transmission season in the area. The exit rate increased (90-99%) with different treatments and the feeding rate was reduced (91-97%). There was no significant difference between WP 30, CS 20 and CS 30 mg/m 2 in these respects. However, WP 20 mg/m 2 caused a lesser effect than the other three groups. The formulations or the dosages differed only in causing vector mortalities. Overall, the total mortality rate of An. fluviatilis was higher in the huts sprayed with CS 30 (58%) than the huts sprayed with CS 20 (48%), WP 20 (37%) and WP 30 mg/m 2 (47%). INTERPRETATION & CONCLUSIONS Considering the duration of residual action and the effect on entry, exit, feeding and mortality of An. fluviatilis, the dosage 20 mg/m 2 of CS formulation of lambdacyhalothrin could be considered for further use.

Abstract
During the 2012 soybean growing season, soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) plants submitted to South Dakota State University Plant Diagnostic Clinic exhibited symptoms typical of sudden death syndrome (SDS) caused by Fusarium virguliforme (Aoki, O'Donnell, Homma, & Lattanzi). In the 2013 soybean growing season, a soybean survey targeting SDS-symptomatic plants was carried out in 20 eastern South Dakota counties between July and August when plants were at the beginning seed and beginning seed maturity growth stages. Soybean plants with SDS-like symptoms were found in eight counties at very low incidence (<3%). Approximately 15 plants per field that had symptoms resembling those of SDS were collected and fungal isolations were made. Leaf symptoms included some necrosis and slight interveinal chlorosis. The tap roots also had areas of necrosis and the vascular system was brown. Isolations were made from the symptomatic tap root sections. The tap root sections were surface sterilized using a 10% NaOCl for 1 min and then rinsed once for 1 min with sterile water before being placed on an acidified potato dextrose agar. Slow growing isolates of F. virguliforme with characteristic blue sporodochia were isolated from these symptomatic plant roots. The conidia were banana-shaped with 4 to 5 septae, a typical characteristic for F. virguliforme. Koch's postulates were performed using a modified layer test method (2). Briefly, the conidia from the isolate (PL1200158 from Yankton county, SD) was used to infest sterile sorghum seed. In the greenhouse, three holes were punched in the bottom of 32 oz. Styrofoam cups. The bottom 11 cm of the cup was then filled with vermiculite. A 2-cm layer of fully colonized sorghum seed was placed on top of the vermiculite. This was covered with a 2- to 5-cm layer of vermiculite. Fifteen soybean cv. Sloan seeds were placed on top of this vermiculite layer and covered with approximately 2 cm more vermiculite for each cup for a total of 12 cups. The temperature in the greenhouse was approximately 23°C with 14 h of light and 10 h of darkness for 21 days. Leaves began to show necrosis and the roots had brown, rotted lesions. Symptoms did not develop on non-inoculated controls. After 5 weeks under greenhouse conditions, the roots of infected plants were removed, surface sterilized, and F. virguliforme was re-isolated. SDS was further confirmed by PCR using primers designed from FvTox1 gene. FvTox1, a single-copy gene, has been found to be highly species specific and primers from this region delineate F. virguliforme from other Fusarium species (1). The PCR product size matched that of expected size. The PCR product was sequenced and a BLAST search matched (100%) only the sequences of F. virguliforme FvTox1 gene (GenBank Accession No. JF440964). The confirmation of SDS in eight counties in South Dakota indicates that SDS may be widespread and a concern for soybean production when conditions are conducive for SDS to develop. Abstract
AIM This work aims to develop receptor based alternatives to the conventional colloidal tracers in sentinel lymph node (SLN) detection. In this study, we report the detailed biological evaluation of two dextran pyrazolyl mannose derivatives towards this purpose. METHODS The dextran pyrazolyl mannose derivatives (DAPM4 and DAPM8) were labeled with the [99mTc(CO)3(H2O)3]+ core. In vitro saturation binding studies for the ligands were performed in mannose receptor-bearing RAW 264.7 macrophage precursor cells. Localization and pharmacokinetics studies of the tracers were conducted in normal Wistar rats with different ligand concentrations using in vivo activity distribution and scintigraphic imaging techniques. RESULTS The ligands were labeled with the [99mTc(CO)3)]+ core in high yield and radiochemical purity (>90%). DAPM4 and DAPM8 showed specific uptake in RAW 264.7 cells. In vivo localization studies showed concentration-dependent uptake and selective retention of the [99mTc]-labeled complexes of DAPM4 and DAPM8 in the sentinel node with highly favorable values of popliteal extraction [PE] (%PEDAPM4=92.94%,%PEDAPM8=91.80% at 180 min p.i.) and rapid clearance from the site of injection when administered at 50 µg/mL ligand concentration. CONCLUSION [99mTc(CO)3]-complexes of DAPM4 and DAPM8 show good in vivo potential to undergo further testing as agents for SLN detection in the clinic and their biological efficacy varies depending upon the concentration of ligands used for the procedure.
