Abstract
Perturbations in cellular chloride concentrations can affect cellular pH and autophagy and lead to the onset of apoptosis. With this in mind, synthetic ion transporters have been used to disturb cellular ion homeostasis and thereby induce cell death; however, it is not clear whether synthetic ion transporters can also be used to disrupt autophagy. Here, we show that squaramide-based ion transporters enhance the transport of chloride anions in liposomal models and promote sodium chloride influx into the cytosol. Liposomal and cellular transport activity of the squaramides is shown to correlate with cell death activity, which is attributed to caspase-dependent apoptosis. One ion transporter was also shown to cause additional changes in lysosomal pH, which leads to impairment of lysosomal enzyme activity and disruption of autophagic processes. This disruption is independent of the initiation of apoptosis by the ion transporter. This study provides the first experimental evidence that synthetic ion transporters can disrupt both autophagy and induce apoptosis.

Abstract
Fifty-five mono- and disaccharide analogues were prepared and used for the construction of microarrays to uncover lectin-selective ligands. The microarray study showed that two disaccharide analogues, 28' and 44', selectively bind to Solanum tuberosum lectin (STL) and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), respectively. Cell studies indicated that 28' and 44' selectively block the binding of STL and WGA to mammalian cells, unlike the natural ligand LacNAc, which suppresses binding of both STL and WGA to cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To assess the efficacy of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs), the authors retrospectively reviewed our 7-year experience. We evaluated the obliteration rate, improvement in clinical symptoms, and complications. METHODS Thirty patients with DAVF underwent SRS using a Gamma Knife between 2009 and 2015. Twenty-three patients were treated with SRS alone, and seven patients underwent SRS for residual or recurrent DAVFs after embolization or surgery. Chemosis, diplopia, and pulsating tinnitus were the most common symptoms. Median target volume was 2.9 cm3 (range, 0.8-13.6 cm3), and median radiation dose to the target was 17 Gy (range, 12-20 Gy). Median follow-up period was 33 months (range, 6-82 months). RESULTS At the last neuroimaging follow-up, DAVFs were totally obliterated in 23 patients (77%) and subtotally in 7 (23%). At the last clinical follow-up, 21 patients (70%) showed complete recovery, and 9 (30%) showed incomplete recovery in symptoms or signs. None experienced worsening symptoms or signs. Asymptomatic perilesional edema after SRS occurred in one patient (3%). Total obliteration rates after SRS were 43% at 1 year, 79% at 2 years, and 95% at 5 years. Improvement rates of neurological function after SRS were 12% at 1 month, 52% at 2 months, 72% at 3 months, and 96% at 6 months. A multivariate analysis revealed that Borden type 1 (p = 0.019, hazard ratio, 3.254, 95% confidence interval, 1.216-8.707) was significantly associated with symptom improvement. CONCLUSIONS SRS for intracranial DAVFs provided a high obliteration rate and a relatively low risk of radiation-induced complications. In selected benign cases without cortical venous drainage, SRS is a safe and effective treatment for symptom relief and fistula obliteration, even though the time course of improvement is longer than those of embolization and surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We reviewed our 7-year experience to assess the efficacy of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for dural carotid cavernous fistulas (DCCFs). We analyzed the clinical outcome, complications, and angiographic results. METHODS We performed a retrospective analysis of 18 consecutive patients with DCCFs treated by SRS alone using Gamma Knife between 2009 and 2015. Median target volume was 2.6 cm3 (range, 0.6-11.6 cm3), and median radiation dose to the target was 17 Gy (range, 14-19 Gy). Median follow-up period was 30 months (range, 6-65 months). RESULTS Fifteen patients (83%) achieved total obliteration of the DCCF, and a subtotal obliteration of the DCCF was achieved in 3 patients (17%). Total obliteration rates after SRS were 53% at 1 year and 90% at 2 years. Twelve patients (67%) showed complete recovery from symptoms or signs, and 6 patients (33%) showed incomplete recovery. Improvement rates of neurologic function after SRS were 56% at 1 month, 72% at 3 months, and 94% at 6 months. None of the patients experienced radiation-related complications. A univariate analysis revealed that absence of hypertension (P = 0.025), seizure (P = 0.025), and cortical venous drainage (P = 0.013) were significantly associated with symptoms improvement. CONCLUSIONS SRS for DCCFs offered a high obliteration rate with low risk of radiation-induced complications. In patients with benign DCCFs that are not amenable to embolization or microsurgery, SRS is a safe and effective treatment for complete obliteration of the arteriovenous shunt and for improving quality of life.

Abstract
PurposeTo investigate the association between urinary cotinine levels as an objective biological marker for exposure to nicotine and refractive status.Patients and methodsThis cross-sectional study analyzed data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2008 and 2011. A total of 1139 Korean adolescents aged 12-18 years were enrolled. Urinary cotinine concentrations and other potential risk factors for myopia were examined. Correlation analyses and multivariate regression analysis were performed to investigate the association between urinary cotinine level and refractive error.ResultsSpherical equivalent correlated significantly with urinary cotinine concentration (r=0.104, P=0.011). Lower urinary cotinine level was associated with a trend toward more myopic refractive errors (P for trend=0.003). After adjusting for age, sex, area of residence, physical activity, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D level, parental income level, and receipt of basic livelihood security, subjects with a low urinary cotinine level had a significantly increased risk of myopia <-0.5 D (odds ratio (OR) 1.95, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18-3.21), <-3.0 D (OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.29-3.2), and <-6.0 D (OR 2.2, 95% CI, 1.15-4.23) when compared with subjects with a high urinary cotinine level. As urinary cotinine level decreased, the risks of myopia <-0.5 D, <-3.0 D, and <-6.0 D increased significantly (P for trend <0.05).ConclusionA trend toward less myopic refractive error was observed among Korean adolescents with higher urinary cotinine levels. This result provides the epidemiologic evidence implying nicotine as a potential modulator related with refractive development. Further studies with full consideration for myopia-associated risk factors are required to yield clear answers on the direct effect of smoking to the refractive status.

Abstract
PurposeTo identify the risk factors for, and clinical features and treatment outcomes of aggressive posterior retinopathy of prematurity (APROP) in Korean infants.MethodsAmong 770 premature infants who underwent screening, 105 infants (198 eyes, 13.63%) received treatment for ROP. A total of 24 infants (48 eyes, 3.12%) developed APROP while 81 infants (150 eyes, 10.52%) developed non-APROP treatment-requiring type. The medical records of ROP-treated infants were reviewed retrospectively. The associated systemic and maternal risk factors were analyzed and anatomical outcomes were compared according to the severity of ROP and treatment modalities.ResultsThe mean gestational age and birth weight at birth in the APROP group were significantly lower than those in the non-APROP group (P=0.019, P<0.001, respectively). Infants who were born small for their GA developed APROP more frequently than non-APROP patients (P<0.001). Chorioamnionitis-positive infants also showed higher incidence rate of APROP (APROP vs non-APROP; P<0.001 and zone I APROP vs posterior zone II APROP; P=0.036, respectively). Infants with APROP required heavier laser treatment with a higher retreatment rate compared to infants with non-APROP. Favorable anatomical outcomes were achieved in 95.3% from treatment-requiring non-APROP group, 85.7% from zone I APROP and 84.6% from posterior zone II APROP group.ConclusionIntrauterine growth restriction and chorioamnionitis were associated with development of APROP. These findings suggest that perinatal maternal environment inhibiting normal retinal vascular growth in utero may contribute to increasing the risk of APROP in premature infants.

Abstract
Abstract
Background : Wound infection after breast cancer surgery is considered to be factors that increase the discomfort of the patient and increase of the extension and the use of antibiotics in the treatment time period, in particular breast cancer postoperative wound infection resulting slow the implementation of adjunctive therapy such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy after surgery can cause, it is important to effectively prevent, there has been a development of a variety of skin wound therapeutic agent to reduce them. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the wound dressing with existing wound dressing Neo dermal activator compared to the patients receiving preoperative chemotherapy.
Methods : A total of 54 breast cancer patients who recieved BCS & mastectomy devided two group(each 27 patients) through the random assignment between Jan, 2016 and June, 2016. Day one weeks after surgery to examine the wound infection rate (surgical site infection, SSI rate). After six months of outpatient surgery visits to check the wounds of patients, using the VAS records the scar of the wound satisfaction. For patients who underwent radiation therapy, check out the time it took to begin radiation therapy after surgery.
All tests were two-sided. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 20.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, Illinois, USA).
Eligbility criteria is :
- one side breast cancer
- not inflammatory breast cancer
- recieved BCS and mastectomy only (without immediate reconstruction surgery)
- stage IV breast cancer.

Abstract
Background/Rationale: The non-receptor tyrosine kinase PTK6/Brk is highly expressed in the ER+/Luminal breast cancer subtypes. PTK6 expression has prognostic significance for patients with ER+ disease; higher transcript levels are associated with poorer survival. The functions of PTK6 in the context of ER+ breast cancer and sensitivity to endocrine therapy have not been explored. We sought to determine the functional roles of PTK6 in ER+ breast cancer cells, including those that are relatively resistant to current endocrine therapies. Methods/Results. We modulated the expression of PTK6 using both gain- and loss-of-function approaches. Enhanced expression of PTK6 in Tamoxifen-sensitive ER+ breast cancer cells was sufficient to confer relative Tamoxifen resistance. Furthermore, downregulation of PTK6 in ER+ breast cancer cells, including those that have acquired resistance to Tamoxifen, induced apoptosis, as evidenced by an increase in AnnexinV+ cells and increased levels of cleaved PARP. PTK6 downregulation impaired growth of Tamoxifen-resistant variants of ER+ MCF7 and T47D cells (MCF7TamR and T47DTamR) in 3D Matrigel culture, and virtually abrogated primary tumor growth of MCF7TamR xenografts. Mechanistically, p38MAPK activation is critical for PTK6 downregulation-induced apoptosis of ER+ breast cancer cells, as p38 inhibition partially rescues cells from PTK6 shRNA-associated apoptosis. Conclusions: Our studies highlight the critical role that PTK6 plays in the survival of ER+ breast cancer cells, including those that are resistant to endocrine therapy. Enhanced PTK6 expression in ER+ breast cancer cells is sufficient to promote endocrine therapy resistance, which could contribute to the poorer prognosis associated with higher PTK6 expression in ER+ patient tumors. As small molecule PTK6 inhibitors are becoming available, our studies support further evaluation of PTK6 as a candidate therapeutic target for endocrine therapy resistant ER+ breast cancers.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Lysyl oxidase (LOX) is an extracellular matrix enzyme that catalyzes the
cross-linking of collagens or elastin. Our hypothesis is that LOX contributes to the formation
of a fibrotic focus (FF), which is related to inflammation in breast carcinogenesis.
In this study, we analyzed the association between the expression LOXs and FF, and
investigated prognostic significance in breast cancer.
Methods: Tissue microarrarys were constructed from the specimens of 444 patients
with primary invasive breast cancer. Immunohistochemical staining for LOX, LOXlike
(LOXL)-, LOXL-2 and LOXL-3 was performed. The status of FF within the tumor
was assessed. The number of CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, CD68+ macrophages was
counted, and intratumoral and peritumoral lymphocyte infiltration were evaluated.
The clinicopathologic characteristics of the patients were analyzed.
Result: The percentage of positive FF was 39.2% and positive rate of LOX expression
was 50% in primary breast cancer tissues. FF was found to be significantly associated
with intratumoral and peritumoral inflammation, lymph node metastasis, high histologic
grade, larger tumor size. LOX was associated with intratumoral and peritumoral
inflammation, CD8+ T cells and menopausal status. LOXL-3 was significantly associated
with positive expression of ER and PR, and molecular subtype.
Conclusions: FF and the expression of LOX were associated with inflammation in
breast cancer in this study. Our results suggest that LOXs may contribute to the formation
of a FF indirectly in relation with inflammation in breast cancer. Further studies
are needed to clarify the role of LOXs, FF and inflammation in tumorigenesis and
prognostic value of them in breast cancer.

Abstract
AIMS The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of sarcopenia and to examine its impact on patients with degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (DLSS). PATIENTS AND METHODS This case-control study included two groups: one group consisting of patients with DLSS and a second group of control subjects without low back or neck pain and related leg pain. Five control cases were randomly selected and matched by age and gender (n = 77 cases and n = 385 controls) for each DLSS case. Appendicular muscle mass, hand-grip strength, sit-to-stand test, timed up and go (TUG) test, and clinical outcomes, including the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores and the EuroQol EQ-5D were compared between the two groups. RESULTS The prevalence of sarcopenia, as defined by hand-grip strength, was significantly higher in the DLSS group (24%) when compared with the age- and gender-matched control group (12%) (p = 0.004). In the DLSS group, the sarcopenia subgroup demonstrated inferior results for the TUG test and ODI scores when compared with the non-sarcopenia subgroup (p = 0.006 and p = 0.039, respectively) after adjusting for age and gender. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated a higher prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with DLSS and highlighted its negative effect on clinical outcomes. Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2016;98-B:1093-8.

Abstract
BACKGROUND OBJECTIVE The present study investigated the effect of monosaccharides in a glycerol-free tris (GFT) extender on reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and apoptosis in cryopreserved dog spermatozoa. MATERIALS AND METHODS The sperm pellets were resuspended (5 × 107 mL-1) with GFT containing 172 mM glucose (G), 86 mM glucose + 86 mM fructose (GF), 86 mM glucose + 86 mM galactose (Gg), 172 mM fructose (F), 172 mM galactose (g) or 86 mM fructose + 86 mM galactose (Fg). The sperm (500 µL) were loaded in 0.5 mL straws and cooled for 50 min at 4 degree C. The straws were then frozen 7 cm from the surface of liquid nitrogen (LN2) for 20 min and were finally plunged into LN2. After freezing-thawing, the sperm motility and viability were evaluated. The ROS level (H2O2) and apoptosis index were assessed by using flow cytometry. RESULTS GFT supplemented with GF resulted in significantly higher (P < 0.05) progressive sperm motility and viability followed by only G, which had greater ROS reducing capacity. However, sperm cell apoptosis had no significant differences among all the experimental groups. CONCLUSION Cryopreservation of dog sperm in GFT containing GF yields more motile and viable sperm followed by only G, which has greater ROS reducing efficiency.

After having been applied by total-etch XP bond (Dentsply Caulk, Milford, DE, USA) and light curing, the teeth were restored with the following resin composites: group 1, Filtek Z350 (3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA); group 2, SDR (Dentsply Caulk, Milford, DE, USA) + Z350; group 3, Venus Bulk Fill (Heraeus Kulzer, Dormagen, Germany) + Z350; group 4, Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein); and group 5, SonicFill (Kerr, West Collins, Orange, CA, USA). After thermo-mechanical load cycling, cross-sectional microcomputerized tomography (micro-CT) images were taken. Internal adaptation was measured as imperfect margin percentage (IM%), which was the percentage of defective margin length relative to whole margin length. On the micro-CT images, IM% was measured at five interfaces. Linear polymerization shrinkage (LS) and polymerization shrinkage stress (PS) were measured on each composite with a custom linometer and universal testing machine. To explore the correlation of IM% and LS or PS, the Pearson correlation test was used. RESULTS The IM% of the gingival and pulpal cavity floors were inferior to those of the cavity walls. The IM% values of the groups were found to be as follows: group 5 ≤ groups 1 and 4 ≤ group 2 ≤ group 3. The correlation analysis showed that the p value was 0.006 between LS and IM% and 0.003 between PS and IM%, indicating significant correlations (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Flowable bulk-fill composites had a higher IM% and polymerization shrinkage stress than did packable bulk-fill and hybrid composites. In class II composite restoration, the gingival floor of the proximal box and pulpal floor of the cavity had higher IM% than did the buccal and lingual walls of the proximal box. LS and PS, which were measured under compliance-allowed conditions, were significantly related to internal adaptation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a navigation program for patients with thyroid cancer. The navigation program was developed following an analysis of the unmet needs of patients who underwent surgery for thyroid cancer. Ninety-nine patients in the control group received usual care, and 95 in the navigation group were managed with a navigation program during the perioperative period. The effectiveness of the navigation program was assessed by administering a questionnaire to both groups. Overall satisfaction scores were significantly higher in the navigation than in the control group (p = .025), as were satisfaction scores on the continuity of information (p < .001), the continuity of management (p = .002), the continuity of relationships with healthcare providers (p<.001), and patient empowerment (p < .001). The newly developed navigation program for patients with thyroid cancer was effective in raising satisfaction levels and in actively managing the disease during the perioperative period.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a combined mixture of phytogenic extracts (garlic and coriander) and probiotics on growth performance and immune responses in laying hens based on the results of in vitro studies to screen for immunomodulatory potency of each ingredient. Several parameters of immunomodulatory potency were estimated using lamina propria leucocytes (LPLs) isolated from rat intestinal mucosa tissue. Results show that the combined mixture enhanced LPLs proliferation, increased LPL-mediated cytotoxicity against YAC-1 tumour cells, and decreased lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cytokine production including tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in LPLs. For in vivo study, laying hens (n = 50/each diet group) were fed with control diet, a diet containing antibiotics (0.01% per kg feed) or the combined mixture (0.02% per kg feed) for 21 days. The dietary combined mixture improved egg production (p < 0.05) but not growth performance and carcass traits. Interestingly, the patterns of suppressing plasma IFN-γ productions during inflammation by LPS injection and decreasing caecal E. coli counts in the combined mixture group were comparable to those in the antibiotics group. Taken together, our results suggested that the 0.02% of combined mixture of phytogenic extracts and probiotics as ingredients has potential immunomodulatory effects in laying hens.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Increased expression of angiogenic factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), is associated with the pathogenesis of cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs). The purpose of this study was to investigate plasma levels of VEGF in normal subjects and in patients with CCM and to evaluate change in these levels following stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). METHODS Peripheral venous blood was collected from 6 patients with CCM before SRS using Gamma Knife and at the 1 week, 1 month, 3month, and 6 month follow-up visits. Plasma VEGF levels were measured using commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Peripheral blood samples were obtained from 10 healthy volunteers as controls. RESULTS Mean plasma VEGF level of 41.9 pg/mL (range, 11.7-114.9 pg/mL) in patients with CCM at baseline was higher than that of the healthy controls (29.3 pg/mL, range, 9.2-64.3 pg/mL), without significant differences between CCM patients and controls (p=0.828). Plasma VEGF level following SRS dropped to 24.6 pg/mL after 1 week, and decreased to 18.5 pg/mL after 1 month, then increased to 24.3 pg/mL after 3 months, and 32.6 pg/mL after 6 months. Two patients suffering from rebleeding after SRS showed a higher level of VEGF at 6 months after SRS than their pretreatment level. CONCLUSION Plasma VEGF levels in patients with CCM were elevated over controls at baseline, and decreased from baseline to 1 month after SRS and increased further for up to 6 months. Theses results indicated that anti-angiogenic effect of SRS might play a role in the treatment of CCMs.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the intensity of trauma influences the pathogenesis of traumatic chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH). MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-one patients treated surgically for traumatic CSDH were divided into high-impact and lowimpact groups according to the intensity of trauma. They were respectively evaluated with respect to clinical and radiological findings at presentation, and the subdural concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor, and beta-trace protein (ΒTP) [a highly specific protein in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)] related to the pathogenesis of CSDH. If ΒTP (subdural fluid/serum) was > 2, an admixture of CSF to the subdural fluid was indicated. RESULTS The ΒTP (subdural fluid/serum) was > 2 in all patients with a traumatic CSDH. The mean concentration of subdural ΒTP in the high-impact group was higher than in the low-impact group (6.1 mg/L versus 3.9 mg/L), and the difference was statistically significant (p=0.02). In addition, mean concentrations of IL-6, IL-8 and VEGF were higher in the high-impact group, as compared to the low-impact group, though the differences did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSION Trauma may be related to CSF leakage into the subdural space in CSDH, and the intensity of trauma may influence the amount of CSF leakage. Although there is no direct correlation between the amount of CSF leakage and other subdural molecules, the intensity of trauma may be associated with larger concentrations of molecules in traumatic CSDH.

Abstract
Given the mode of transmission of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), healthcare workers (HCWs) in contact with MERS patients are expected to be at risk of MERS infections. We evaluated the prevalence of MERS coronavirus (CoV) immunoglobulin (Ig) G in HCWs exposed to MERS patients and calculated the incidence of MERS-affected cases in HCWs. We enrolled HCWs from hospitals where confirmed MERS patients had visited. Serum was collected 4 to 6 weeks after the last contact with a confirmed MERS patient. We performed an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to screen for the presence of MERS-CoV IgG and an indirect immunofluorescence test (IIFT) to confirm MERS-CoV IgG. We used a questionnaire to collect information regarding the exposure. We calculated the incidence of MERS-affected cases by dividing the sum of PCR-confirmed and serology-confirmed cases by the number of exposed HCWs in participating hospitals. In total, 1169 HCWs in 31 hospitals had contact with 114 MERS patients, and among the HCWs, 15 were PCR-confirmed MERS cases in study hospitals. Serologic analysis was performed for 737 participants. ELISA was positive in five participants and borderline for seven. IIFT was positive for two (0.3%) of these 12 participants. Among the participants who did not use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), seropositivity was 0.7% (2/294) compared to 0% (0/443) in cases with appropriate PPE use. The incidence of MERS infection in HCWs was 1.5% (17/1169). The seroprevalence of MERS-CoV IgG among HCWs was higher among participants who did not use appropriate PPE.

Abstract
Background: Inflammatory stimuli can induce neutrophils to release nuclear DNA combined with histones into the extracellular space, forming neutrophil extracellular traps. Because inflammation contributes to diabetic retinopathy, it is plausible that neutrophil extracellular trap formation actively occurs in diabetic retinopathy. This case-control study investigated the clinical relevance of circulating levels of neutrophil extracellular trap components as risk factors of diabetic retinopathy, and further evaluated whether glucose induced neutrophil extracellular trap formation in vitro using whole blood from healthy volunteers. Methods: Circulating levels of DNA-histone complexes, cell free double-stranded DNA, and polymorphonuclear neutrophil elastase, considered to be markers of neutrophil extracellular trap formation, were measured in patients with diabetic retinopathy (n=28) and without (n=62) and in 28 healthy controls. Results: Circulating DNA-histone complex and polymorphonuclear neutrophil elastase levels were significantly increased in patients with diabetic retinopathy compared with those without retinopathy. Multivariable logistic regression analysis, adjusted for glycated hemoglobin levels and fasting blood glucose, revealed that DNA-histone complex and polymorphonuclear neutrophil elastase levels were significant independent risk factors of retinopathy. In vitro experiments also showed that glucose significantly increased markers of neutrophil extracellular trap formation in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusions: Markers of neutrophil extracellular trap formation were independent risk factors of diabetic retinopathy. This finding provides a new insight into the potential therapeutic and preventive approaches to dampen neutrophil extracellular trap formation.

Abstract
The actin-binding protein fascin has been associated with clinically aggressive tumors and poor prognosis. The purpose of this study was to investigate possibility of fascin expression as a prognostic factor in a newly diagnosed primary glioblastoma (GBM). Between July 2007 and December 2013, 37 out of 126 patients diagnosed with GBM satisfied the following inclusion criteria: (1) the presence of immunohistochemically-available tissue, (2) a new primary GBM, (3) gross-total resection, and (4) standardized adjuvant treatment, known as the Stupp regimen. The median follow-up period was 18 months (range 5-95). According to the staining intensity of fascin, progression-free survival (PFS) in the low-intensity fascin group (median PFS 9.0 months; 95 % CI 6.0-12.0) was longer than PFS in the high-intensity fascin group (median PFS 7.0 months; 95 % CI 5.6-10.4; p = 0.024). Overall survival (OS) in the low-intensity fascin group (median OS 20.0 months; 95 % CI 17.7-22.4) was longer than OS in the high-intensity fascin group (median OS 13.0 months; 95 % CI 8.2-17.8; p = 0.031). And, the staining intensity of fascin was a statistically significant factor in PFS and OS according to univariate and multivariate analyses (univariate analysis p = 0.043 and p = 0.043; multivariate analysis p = 0.041 and p = 0.044). Our clinical study showed that fascin expression intensity may be correlated with clinical outcomes of a newly diagnosed primary GBM, especially with regard to PFS and OS.

Abstract
Hsc70 is known to be involved in clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME) by which cells take up various extracellular materials. More specifically, this protein promotes the disassembly of clathrin-coated vesicles (CCVs) by directly binding to clathrin during CME. As the ATPase activity of Hsc70 is required for its association with clathrin, we have investigated the effect of an inhibitor (apoptozole, Az) of an ATPase domain of Hsc70 on CME. The results of biochemical studies show that Az binds to Hsc70 and Hsp70 without binding to other types of heat shock proteins. Structure-activity relationship studies provide information on the structural features responsible for the inhibition of the ATPase activity of Hsc70. The results obtained from cell experiments reveal that Az disrupts the interaction of Hsc70 with clathrin in cells, thereby leading to the accumulation of transferrin in CCVs and suppression of release of free Fe(3+) from CCVs during transferrin receptor-mediated endocytosis.

Abstract
This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial studied the effectiveness of pulsed electromagnetic therapy (PEMT) in patients with chronic lower back pain. Active PEMT ( n = 17) or placebo treatment ( n = 19) was performed three times a week for 3 weeks. Patients were assessed using a numerical rating scale (NRS) and revised Oswestry disability scores for 4 weeks after therapy. PEMT produced significant pain reduction throughout the observation period compared with baseline values. The percentage change in the NRS score from baseline was significantly greater in the PEMT group than the placebo group at all three time-points measured. The mean revised Oswestry disability percentage after 4 weeks was significantly improved from the baseline value in the PEMT group, whereas there were no significant differences in the placebo group. In conclusion, PEMT reduced pain and disability and appears to be a potentially useful therapeutic tool for the conservative management of chronic lower back pain.

Abstract
Corneal dystrophy typically refers to a group of rare hereditary disorders with a heterogeneous genetic background. A comprehensive molecular genetic analysis was performed to characterize the genetic spectrum of corneal dystrophies in Korean patients. Patients with various corneal dystrophies underwent thorough ophthalmic examination, histopathologic examination, and Sanger sequencing. A total of 120 probands were included, with a mean age of 50 years (SD = 18 years) and 70% were female. A total of 26 mutations in five genes (14 clearly pathogenic and 12 likely pathogenic) were identified in 49 probands (41%). Epithelial-stromal TGFBI dystrophies, macular corneal dystrophy and Schnyder corneal dystrophy (SCD) showed 100% mutation detection rates, while endothelial corneal dystrophies showed lower detection rates of 3%. Twenty six non-duplicate mutations including eight novel mutations were identified and mutations associated with SCD were identified genetically for the first time in this population. This study provides a comprehensive characterization of the genetic aberrations in Korean patients and also highlights the diagnostic value of molecular genetic analysis in corneal dystrophies.

Abstract
Most craniosynostoses are sporadic, but may have an underlying genetic basis. Secondary and syndromic craniosynostosis accompanies various systemic diseases or associated anomalies. Early detection of an associated disease may facilitate the interdisciplinary management of patients and improve outcomes. For that reason, systematic evaluation of craniosynostosis is mandatory. The authors reviewed systematic evaluation of craniosynostosis with an emphasis on genetic analysis.
