Temperature influences lipid content in the red harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus

Temperature is one of the most important environmental conditions affecting physiological processes in ectothermic organisms like ants. Yet, we often lack information on how certain physiological traits covary with temperature across time. Here, we test predictions on how one trait-lipid content-covaries with temperature using a conspicuous, ground-dwelling harvester ant. We focus on lipid content as fat bodies are metabolically active tissues that are important for storing and releasing energy in response to demand, which could be vital for survival under variable temperatures. From March to November, we extracted lipids from surface workers of 14 colonies while simultaneously recording ground temperature. We first assessed if lipid content was highest during cooler temperatures when ants were less active and less metabolically stressed. In doing so, we found that lipid content of ants declined almost 70% from cool months (November lipid content = 14.6%) to hot months (August lipid content = 4.6%). We next assessed if lipid levels from a group of ants collected at a single time point could change by placing individuals into environmental chambers set at 10, 20, and 30°C (i.e., the approximate span of average temperatures from March to November). Temperature again had a significant impact such that after 10 days, lipid content of ants in the hottest chamber (30°C) had decreased by more than 75%. While intraspecific variation in physiological traits often follows seasonal patterns, our results suggest fluctuations in temperature may account for a portion of the variance observed in traits like lipid content.

Needs and Procedures for a National Anthropometry Study of Law Enforcement Officers

OBJECTIVES

This research aims to determine the need and extent for a national anthropometry survey of law enforcement officers (LEOs) via an exploratory investigation of anthropometric changes of LEOs in four decades and comparisons of the LEO data with three existing military and civilian anthropometry sources.

BACKGROUND

The best available anthropometric dataset of LEOs is 45 years old and has largely become outdated due to demographic changes. Assessing the extent of anthropometric changes of LEOs through a sample and evaluating the differences of the sample against existing anthropometric datasets is a step toward ascertaining the necessity for a national LEO anthropometry study.

METHOD

Thirty-two body dimensions of 67 regional male LEOs and seven female LEOs were measured, and the data of males were compared with the best available LEO anthropometry data from 1975 and three recent non-LEO anthropometry databases.

RESULTS

Anthropometric dimensions were significantly different between this LEO study and existing data sources, especially in chest circumference and body weight. Most of the significant differences are important differences for LEO protective gear and vehicle design.

CONCLUSION

The study confirmed that the existing 45-year-old LEO dataset and recent Army and civilian datasets would not be suitable for armor and equipment design for the current LEO population.

APPLICATION

The study results are useful in supporting the decision of investing in a national LEO anthropometry survey and for equipment manufacturers to recognize the distinctiveness of LEO anthropometry from other populations and the magnitude of anthropometry changes of LEOs over the past 45 years.

Shrinking body size and climate warming: Many freshwater salmonids do not follow the rule

Declining body size is believed to be a universal response to climate warming and has been documented in numerous studies of marine and anadromous fishes. The Salmonidae are a family of coldwater fishes considered to be among the most sensitive species to climate warming; however, whether the shrinking body size response holds true for freshwater salmonids has yet to be examined at a broad spatial scale. We compiled observations of individual fish lengths from long-term surveys across the Northern Hemisphere for 12 species of freshwater salmonids and used linear mixed models to test for spatial and temporal trends in body size (fish length) spanning recent decades. Contrary to expectations, we found a significant increase in length overall but with high variability in trends among populations and species. More than two-thirds of the populations we examined increased in length over time. Secondary regressions revealed larger-bodied populations are experiencing greater increases in length than smaller-bodied populations. Mean water temperature was weakly predictive of changes in body length but overall minimal influences of environmental variables suggest that it is difficult to predict an organism's response to changing temperatures by solely looking at climatic factors. Our results suggest that declining body size is not universal, and the response of fishes to climate change may be largely influenced by local factors. It is important to know that we cannot assume the effects of climate change are predictable and negative at a large spatial scale.

Unexpected decadal density-dependent shifts in California sea lion size, morphology, and foraging niche

Many marine mammal populations are recovering after long eras of exploitation.^1,2 To what degree density-dependent body size declines in recovering species reflect a general response to increased resource competition is unknown. We examined skull size (as a proxy for body size), skull morphology, and foraging dynamics of the top marine predator, the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus), which have been steadily increasing over the last few decades and have approached or reached their carrying capacity in southern California.³ We show that, contrary to predictions, male California sea lions increased rather than decreased their average body size over a 46-year (1962-2008) recovery period. Larger males had proportionally longer oral cavities and more powerful bite strength, and their foraging niche expanded. Females between 1983 and 2007 maintained stable skull dimensions, but their isotopic niche was broader than contemporary males. Increased male body size is compatible with an intensification of density-dependent sexual selection for larger and more competitive individuals concurrent with an expanding foraging niche. High foraging variability among females would explain their body size stability during decades of population recovery. We demonstrate that body size reduction is not the universal response to population recovery in marine mammals and show that selective ecological dynamics could contribute to protecting populations against the increased density-dependent intraspecific competition. However, prey shifts associated with climate change will likely prevent California sea lions (and other marine mammals) from attaining these ecological dynamics, augmenting their vulnerability to resource competition and diminishing their capacity to overcome it.

Three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging analysis shows sex-specific patterns in changes in anterior cruciate ligament cross-sectional area along its length

Smaller anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) size in females has been hypothesized to be a key contributor to a higher incidence of ACL tears in that population, as a lower cross-sectional area (CSA) directly corresponds to a larger stress on the ligament for a given load. Prior studies have used a mid-length CSA measurement to quantify ACL size. In this study, we used magnetic resonance imaging to quantify the CSA along the entire length of the intact ACL. We hypothesized that changes in the ACL CSA along its length would have different patterns in males and females. We also hypothesized that changes in ACL CSA along its length would be associated with body size or knee size with different associations in females and males. MR images of contralateral ACL-intact knees of 108 patients (62 females, 13-35 years) undergoing ACL surgery were used to measure the CSA along the ACL length, using a custom program. For both females and males, the largest CSA was located at 37%-39% of ACL length from the tibial insertion. Compared to females, males had a significantly larger CSA only within the distal 41% of the ACL (p < 0.001). ACL CSA was associated with patient height and weight in males (r > 0.3; p < 0.05), whereas it was associated with intercondylar notch width in females (r > 0.3; p < 0.05). These findings highlight the importance of standardizing the location of measurement of ACL CSA.

Sexually antagonistic selection maintains genetic variance when sexual dimorphism evolves

Genetic variance (VG) in fitness related traits is often unexpectedly high, evoking the question how VG can be maintained in the face of selection. Sexually antagonistic (SA) selection favouring alternative alleles in the sexes is common and predicted to maintain VG, while directional selection should erode it. Both SA and sex-limited directional selection can lead to sex-specific adaptations but how each affect VG when sexual dimorphism evolves remain experimentally untested. Using replicated artificial selection on the seed beetle Callosobruchus maculatus body size we recently demonstrated an increase in size dimorphism under SA and male-limited (ML) selection by 50% and 32%, respectively. Here we test their consequences on genetic variation. We show that SA selection maintained significantly more ancestral, autosomal additive genetic variance than ML selection, while both eroded sex-linked additive variation equally. Ancestral female-specific dominance variance was completely lost under ML, while SA selection consistently sustained it. Further, both forms of selection preserved a high genetic correlation between the sexes (rm,f). These results demonstrate the potential for sexual antagonism to maintain more genetic variance while fuelling sex-specific adaptation in a short evolutionary time scale, and are in line with predicted importance of sex-specific dominance reducing sexual conflict over alternative alleles.

Does paternal care influence mate preference? Male and female mating behavior in Threespine Stickleback ecotypes that differ markedly in parental care

Reproductive isolation can occur due to divergence in sexual selection for particular traits. For example, differences in mate preference associated with body size can play an important role in divergence between groups. The importance of mate preference for population divergence may be influenced by other aspects of a mating system, such as the requirement for parental care. In Nova Scotia, Canada, two ecotypes of marine Threespine Stickleback occur sympatrically: a “common” ecotype wherein males provide parental care, and a “white” ecotype that does not exhibit paternal care. The goal of our study was to examine differences in male mate preference between white and common stickleback males to test the prediction that males who invest more in parental care may be more selective about their mates. Because of the link between size and fecundity in this species, we predict that males that invest in parental care should prefer large females, while males that do not provide care will not exhibit preference for larger female size. We found that common male stickleback preferred larger‐bodied females of both ecotypes, while white males showed a preference for larger‐bodied common females. Secondarily, we assessed whether females differed in their willingness to mate with males of different sizes and ecotypes. Common female stickleback had a higher response rate toward smaller white males, which may be associated with their relatively high courtship rates. Counter to previous studies on these ecotypes that suggest that mating is completely assortative, interecotype matings occurred in half of the observed spawning events. This observation, coupled with the results that males may prefer females based mainly on size and females respond to males who court more rigorously regardless of their ecotype, may lend insight into recent genetic evidence for hybridization in the wild.

Applying stochastic and Bayesian integral projection modeling to amphibian population viability analysis

Integral projection models (IPMs) can estimate the population dynamics of species for which both discrete life stages and continuous variables influence demographic rates. Stochastic IPMs for imperiled species, in turn, can facilitate population viability analyses (PVAs) to guide conservation decision-making. Biphasic amphibians are globally distributed, often highly imperiled, and ecologically well suited to the IPM approach. Herein, we present a stochastic size- and stage-structured IPM for a biphasic amphibian, the U.S. federally threatened California tiger salamander (CTS) (Ambystoma californiense). This Bayesian model reveals that CTS population dynamics show greatest elasticity to changes in juvenile and metamorph growth and that populations are likely to experience rapid growth at low density. We integrated this IPM with climatic drivers of CTS demography to develop a PVA and examined CTS extinction risk under the primary threats of habitat loss and climate change. The PVA indicated that long-term viability is possible with surprisingly high (20%-50%) terrestrial mortality but simultaneously identified likely minimum terrestrial buffer requirements of 600-1000 m while accounting for numerous parameter uncertainties through the Bayesian framework. These analyses underscore the value of stochastic and Bayesian IPMs for understanding both climate-dependent taxa and those with cryptic life histories (e.g., biphasic amphibians) in service of ecological discovery and biodiversity conservation. In addition to providing guidance for CTS recovery, the contributed IPM and PVA supply a framework for applying these tools to investigations of ecologically similar species.

Systemic orchestration of cell size throughout the body: influence of sex and rapamycin exposure in Drosophila melanogaster

Along with differences in life histories, metazoans have also evolved vast differences in cellularity, involving changes in the molecular pathways controlling the cell cycle. The extent to which the signalling network systemically determines cellular composition throughout the body and whether tissue cellularity is organized locally to match tissue-specific functions are unclear. We cultured genetic lines of Drosophila melanogaster on food with and without rapamycin to manipulate the activity of target of rapamycin (TOR)/insulin pathways and evaluate cell-size changes in five types of adult cells: wing and leg epidermal cells, ommatidial cells, indirect flight muscle cells and Malpighian tubule epithelial cells. Rapamycin blocks TOR multiprotein complex 1, reducing cell growth, but this effect has been studied in single cell types. As adults, rapamycin-treated flies had smaller bodies and consistently smaller cells in all tissues. Regardless, females eclosed with larger bodies and larger cells in all tissues than males. Thus, differences in TOR activity and sex were associated with the orchestration of cell size throughout the body, leading to differences in body size. We postulate that the activity of TOR/insulin pathways and their effects on cellularity should be considered when investigating the origin of ecological and evolutionary patterns in life histories.

Feeding morphology and body size shape resource partitioning in an eared seal community

Body size and feeding morphology influence how animals partition themselves within communities. We tested the relationships among sex, body size, skull morphology and foraging in sympatric otariids (eared seals) from the eastern North Pacific Ocean, the most diverse otariid community in the world. We recorded skull measurements and stable carbon (δ¹³C) and nitrogen (δ¹⁵N) isotope values (proxies for foraging) from museum specimens in four sympatric species: California sea lions (Zalophus californianus), Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus), northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) and Guadalupe fur seals (Arctocephalus townsendi). Species and sexes had statistical differences in size, skull morphology and foraging significantly affecting the δ¹³C values. Sea lions had higher δ¹³C values than fur seals, and males of all species had higher values than females. The δ¹⁵N values were correlated with species and feeding morphology; individuals with stronger bite forces had higher δ¹⁵N values. We also found a significant community-wide correlation between skull length (indicator of body length), and foraging, with larger individuals having nearshore habitat preferences, and consuming higher trophic level prey than smaller individuals. Still, there was no consistent association between these traits at the intraspecific level, indicating that other factors might account for foraging variability.

Widespread Torpor Use in Hummingbirds from the Thermally Stable Lowland Tropics

AbstractTorpor, the temporary reduction of metabolic rate and body temperature, is a common energy-saving strategy in endotherms. Because of their small body size and energetically demanding life histories, hummingbirds have proven useful for understanding when and why endotherms use torpor. Previous studies of torpor in hummingbirds have been largely limited to tropical montane species or long-distance migrants that regularly experience challenging thermal conditions. Comparatively little is known, however, about the use of torpor in hummingbirds of the lowland tropics, where relatively high and stable year-round temperatures may at least partially negate the need for torpor. To fill this knowledge gap, we tested for the occurrence of torpor in tropical lowland hummingbirds (n=37 individuals of six species) from central Panama. In controlled experimental conditions simulating the local temperature regime, all six species used torpor to varying degrees and entered torpor at high ambient temperatures (i.e., ≥28°C), indicating that hummingbirds from the thermally stable lowland tropics regularly use torpor. Torpor reduced overnight mass loss, with individuals that spent more time in torpor losing less body mass during temperature experiments. Body mass was the best predictor of torpor depth and duration among and within species-smaller species and individuals tended to use torpor more frequently and enter deeper torpor. Average mass loss in our experiments (∼8%-10%) was greater than that reported in studies of hummingbirds from higher elevation sites (∼4%). We therefore posit that the energetic benefits accrued from torpor may be limited by relatively high nighttime temperatures in the lowland tropics, although further studies are needed to test this hypothesis.

Predicting age and mass at maturity from feeding behavior and diet in Manduca sexta: An empirical test of a life history model

Feeding for most animals involves bouts of active ingestion alternating with bouts of no ingestion. In insects, the temporal patterning of bouts varies widely with resource quality and is known to affect growth, development time, and fitness. However, the precise impacts of resource quality and feeding behavior on insect life history traits are poorly understood. To explore and better understand the connections between feeding behavior, resource quality, and insect life history traits, we combined laboratory experiments with a recently proposed mechanistic model of insect growth and development for a larval herbivore, Manduca sexta. We ran feeding trials for 4th and 5th instar larvae across different diet types (two hostplants and artificial diet) and used these data to parameterize a joint model of age and mass at maturity that incorporates both insect feeding behavior and hormonal activity. We found that the estimated durations of both feeding and nonfeeding bouts were significantly shorter on low-quality than on high-quality diets. We then explored how well the fitted model predicted historical out-of-sample data on age and mass of M. sexta. We found that the model accurately described qualitative outcomes for the out-of-sample data, notably that a low-quality diet results in reduced mass and later age at maturity compared with high-quality diets. Our results clearly demonstrate the importance of diet quality on multiple components of insect feeding behavior (feeding and nonfeeding) and partially validate a joint model of insect life history. We discuss the implications of these findings with respect to insect herbivory and discuss ways in which our model could be improved or extended to other systems.

Decoupling pioneering traits from latitudinal patterns in a north American bird experiencing a southward range shift

Ecogeographic rules describe spatial patterns in biological trait variation and shed light on the drivers of such variation. In animals, a consensus is emerging that 'pioneering' traits may facilitate range shifts via a set of bold, aggressive and stress-resilient traits. Many of these same traits are associated with more northern latitudes, and most range shifts in the northern hemisphere indicate northward movement. As a consequence, it is unclear whether pioneering traits are simply corollaries of existing latitudinal variation, or whether they override other well-trodden latitudinal patterning as a unique ecogeographic rule of phenotypic variation. The tree swallow Tachycineta bicolor is a songbird undergoing a southward range shift in the eastern United States, in direct opposition of the poleward movement seen in most other native species' range shifts. Because this organic range shift countervails the typical direction of movement, this case study provides for unique ecological insights on organisms and their ability to thrive in our changing world. We sampled female birds across seven populations, quantifying behavioural, physiological and morphological traits. We also used GIS and field data to quantify a core set of ecological factors with strong ties to these traits as well as female performance. Females at more southern expansion sites displayed higher maternal aggression, higher baseline corticosterone and more pronounced elevation of corticosterone following a standardized stressor, contrary to otherwise largely conserved latitudinal patterning in these traits. Microhabitat variation explained some quantitative phenotypic variation, but the expansion and historic ranges did not differ in openness, distance to water or breeding density. This countervailing range shift therefore suggests that pioneering traits are not simply corollaries of existing latitudinal variation, but rather, they may override other well-trodden latitudinal patterning as a unique ecogeographic rule of phenotypic variation.

Declines in body size of sockeye salmon associated with increased competition in the ocean

Declining body sizes have been documented for several species of Pacific salmon; however, whether size declines are caused mainly by ocean warming or other ecological factors, and whether they result primarily from trends in age at maturation or changing growth rates remain poorly understood. We quantified changes in mean body size and contributions from shifting size-at-age and age structure of mature sockeye salmon returning to Bristol Bay, Alaska, over the past 60 years. Mean length declined by 3%, corresponding to a 10% decline in mean body mass, since the early 1960s, though much of this decline occurred since the early 2000s. Changes in size-at-age were the dominant cause of body size declines and were more consistent than trends in age structure among the major rivers that flow into Bristol Bay. Annual variation in size-at-age was largely explained by competition among Bristol Bay sockeye salmon and interspecific competition with other salmon in the North Pacific Ocean. Warm winters were associated with better growth of sockeye salmon, whereas warm summers were associated with reduced growth. Our findings point to competition at sea as the main driver of sockeye salmon size declines, and emphasize the trade-off between fish abundance and body size.

Facial expression modifies female body perception

The judgment of female body appearance has been reported to be affected by a range of internal (e.g., viewers' sexual cognition) and external factors (e.g., viewed clothing type and colour). This eye-tracking study aimed to complement previous research by examining the effect of facial expression on female body perception and associated body-viewing gaze behaviour. We presented female body images of Caucasian avatars in a continuum of common dress sizes posing seven basic facial expressions (neutral, happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, and disgust), and asked both male and female participants to rate the perceived body attractiveness and body size. The analysis revealed an evident modulatory role of avatar facial expressions on body attractiveness and body size ratings, but not on the amount of viewing time directed at individual body features. Specifically, happy and angry avatars attracted the highest and lowest body attractiveness ratings, respectively, and fearful and surprised avatars tended to be rated slimmer. Interestingly, the impact of facial expression on female body assessment was not further influenced by viewers' gender, suggesting a 'universal' role of common facial expressions in modifying the perception of female body appearance.

Biodiversity patterns diverge along geographic temperature gradients

Models applying space-for-time substitution, including those projecting ecological responses to climate change, generally assume an elevational and latitudinal equivalence that is rarely tested. However, a mismatch may lead to different capacities for providing climatic refuge to dispersing species. We compiled community data on zooplankton, ectothermic animals that form the consumer basis of most aquatic food webs, from over 1200 mountain lakes and ponds across western North America to assess biodiversity along geographic temperature gradients spanning nearly 3750 m elevation and 30° latitude. Species richness, phylogenetic relationships, and functional diversity all showed contrasting responses across gradients, with richness metrics plateauing at low elevations but exhibiting intermediate latitudinal maxima. The nonmonotonic/hump-shaped diversity trends with latitude emerged from geographic interactions, including weaker latitudinal relationships at higher elevations (i.e. in alpine lakes) linked to different underlying drivers. Here, divergent patterns of phylogenetic and functional trait dispersion indicate shifting roles of environmental filters and limiting similarity in the assembly of communities with increasing elevation and latitude. We further tested whether gradients showed common responses to warmer temperatures and found that mean annual (but not seasonal) temperatures predicted elevational richness patterns but failed to capture consistent trends with latitude, meaning that predictions of how climate change will influence diversity also differ between gradients. Contrasting responses to elevation- and latitude-driven warming suggest different limits on climatic refugia and likely greater barriers to northward range expansion.

Heat tolerance variation reveals vulnerability of tropical herbivore-parasitoid interactions to climate change

Assessing the heat tolerance (CTmax) of organisms is central to understand the impact of climate change on biodiversity. While both environment and evolutionary history affect CTmax, it remains unclear how these factors and their interplay influence ecological interactions, communities and ecosystems under climate change. We collected and reared caterpillars and parasitoids from canopy and ground layers in different seasons in a tropical rainforest. We tested the CTmax and Thermal Safety Margins (TSM) of these food webs with implications for how species interactions could shift under climate change. We identified strong influence of phylogeny in herbivore-parasitoid community heat tolerance. The TSM of all insects were narrower in the canopy and parasitoids had lower heat tolerance compared to their hosts. Our CTmax-based simulation showed higher herbivore-parasitoid food web instability under climate change than previously assumed, highlighting the vulnerability of parasitoids and related herbivore control in tropical rainforests, particularly in the forest canopy.

Variability in bat morphology is influenced by temperature and forest cover and their interactions

Multiple climatic and landscape drivers have been linked to variations in bat body size and wing functional traits. Most previous studies used proxies rather than actual climate and land-use data, and their interactions are rarely explored. We investigate whether higher summer average temperatures are driving decreasing bat body size as predicted by Bergmann's rule or increasing appendage size as per Allen's rule. We also explore whether temperature or resource availability (namely forest cover) is responsible for changes in wing functional traits. Using land-use data from historical maps and national statistics combined with climatic data, we assessed the effect of temperature and resource availability on bat morphology. We used 464 museum specimens of three bat species (Eptesicus nilssonii, Pipistrellus pygmaeus, and Plecotus auritus), spanning 180 years, across a 1200 km latitudinal gradient. We found no evidence of higher summer average temperatures driving decreases in body size in bats. Jaw sizes of P. auritus and P. pygmaeus changed over time but in different directions. The geographical variation of forest cover was also related to differences in wing functional traits in two species. Crucially, there was a significant antagonistic interactive effect of forest and temperature on tip index in P. pygmaeus whereby above 14.5°C the relationship between forest and tip index actually reversed. This could indicate that higher temperatures promote more pointed wings, which may provide energetic benefits. Our results show the importance of including both climatic and land-use variables when assessing trends in bat morphology and exploring interactions. Encouragingly, all three species have shown an ability to adapt their body size and functional traits to different conditions, and it could demonstrate their potential to overcome future negative impacts of climate and land-use change.

Mothers of small-bodied children and fathers of vigorous sons live longer

Life-history traits (traits directly related to survival and reproduction) co-evolve and materialize through physiology and behavior. Accordingly, lifespan can be hypothesized as a potentially informative marker of life-history speed that subsumes the impact of diverse morphometric and behavioral traits. We examined associations between parental longevity and various anthropometric traits in a sample of 4,000-11,000 Estonian children in the middle of the 20th century. The offspring phenotype was used as a proxy measure of parental genotype, so that covariation between offspring traits and parental longevity (defined as belonging to the 90th percentile of lifespan) could be used to characterize the aggregation between longevity and anthropometric traits. We predicted that larger linear dimensions of offspring associate with increased parental longevity and that testosterone-dependent traits associate with reduced paternal longevity. Twelve of 16 offspring traits were associated with mothers' longevity, while three traits (rate of sexual maturation of daughters and grip strength and lung capacity of sons) robustly predicted fathers' longevity. Contrary to predictions, mothers of children with small bodily dimensions lived longer, and paternal longevity was not linearly associated with their children's body size (or testosterone-related traits). Our study thus failed to find evidence that high somatic investment into brain and body growth clusters with a long lifespan across generations, and/or that such associations can be detected on the basis of inter-generational phenotypic correlations.

Black Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas agassizii) Life History in the Sanctuary of Colola Beach, Michoacan, Mexico

Sea turtles present strategies that have allowed them to survive and reproduce. They spend most of their lives in the sea, except when they emerge as hatchlings from the nest and when the adult females return to nest. Those moments of their life cycle are vital for their reproductive success, conservation, and knowledge of their biology. This study reports the life history traits exhibited by female black sea turtles from Colola Beach, Mexico using morphometric and reproductive data obtained during 15 sampling seasons (1985-2000, n = 1500). The results indicate that nesting females have a mean body size of 85.7 cm and reach sexual maturity at 24 years old at a minimum size of 68 cm. Females deposit a mean of 69.3 eggs per clutch, and the mean fecundity was 196.4 eggs per female per season. The remigration intervals of 3 and 5 years were the most frequent registered. The life history traits found in the black sea turtle population present the lowest values reported with respect to studies conducted in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific green turtle populations, which supports the hypothesis that this population is recovering, since morphometric and reproductive data represent young nesting turtles.

Body size influences heart rate in children aged 6 to 18 years old

Previous research established age-related normal limits for children's heart rates (HRs). However, children of the same age can have significantly different HRs, depending on whether they are overweight or underweight, tall or short. Studies on children HR have failed to find a clear correlation between HR and body size. The goal of our study was to create Z scores for HR based on weight (W), height (H), body mass index (BMI), and body surface area (BSA) and compare them to normal age-related HR limits. Electrocardiograms were recorded from a total of 22,460 healthy children ranging in age from 6 to 18 years old using BTL machines. A comparison was made between different age groups, in function of W, H, BMI, and BSA, based on the HR that was automatically detected by using the digitally stored electrocardiogram. Z scores were computed for each of the categories that were mentioned. Incremental Z score values between -2.5 and 2.5 were calculated to establish upper and lower limits of HR. The BSA's estimation of HR is the most accurate of the available methods and can be utilized with accuracy in clinical practice. Z scores for HR in children differ in function of the age, W, H, BMI and BSA. The best estimation is based on BSA. The novelty of our study is that we developed Z scores for HR in relation to body size, age and sex, producing a standardized, consistent, and reproducible result without requiring practitioners to learn and remember cutoff values for a wide range of variables across age groups and sexes. Z scores minimize observer and institutional bias, hence generating uniform and reproducible standards.

Testing the Role of Natural and Sexual Selection on Testes Size Asymmetry in Anurans

Directional asymmetry in testes size is commonly documented in vertebrates. The degree of testes size asymmetry has been confirmed to be associated with natural and sexual selection. However, the role of natural and sexual selection driving variations in testes size asymmetry among species of anurans are largely unknown. Here, we studied the patterns of variations in testes size asymmetry and the factors shaping its variations among 116 anuran species. The results indicated that the left size-biased testes in 110 species (94.83% of 116 species) is more common than the right size-biased testes in six species. For all studied species, the degree of testes size asymmetry was positively associated with relative livers and body fat mass, following the prediction of the packaging hypothesis. We also found that the postcopulatory sperm competition (e.g., residual testes size) was positively associated with the degree of testes asymmetry. However, environmental stress (e.g., high latitude, precipitation seasonality and temperature seasonality) did not promote more symmetrical testes for all species. Our findings suggest that both natural selection for larger livers in body space and sexual selection for rapid increase in testis mass for most species during the breeding season can play key roles in driving in testes size asymmetry across anuran species.

A body-size-dependent series of Chinese adult standing phantoms for radiation dosimetry

Phantoms of different sizes, as indicated by several studies, have a significant impact on the accuracy of dose calculations. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a body-size-dependent series of Chinese standing adult phantoms to improve the accuracy of radiation dosimetry. In this study, the Chinese reference polygon-mesh phantomsCRAM_S/CRAF_Shave been refined and a method for automatically constructing lymph nodes in a mesh phantom has been proposed. Then, based on the refined phantoms, this study has developed 42 anthropometric standing adult computational phantoms, 21 models for each gender, with a height range of 145-185 cm and weight as a function of body mass index corresponding to healthy, overweight and obese. The parameters were extracted from the National Occupational Health Standards (GBZ) document of the People's Republic of China, which covers more than 90% of the Chinese population. For a given body height and mass, phantoms are scaled in proportion to a factor reflecting the change of adipose tissue and the internal organs. The remainder is adjusted manually to match the target parameters. In addition, the constructed body-size-specific phantoms have been implemented in the in-house THUDose Monte Carlo code to calculate the dose coefficients (DCs) for external photon exposures in the antero-posterior, postero-anterior and right lateral geometries. The results showed that organ DCs varied significantly with body size at low energies (<2MeV) and high energies (>8MeV) due to the differences in anatomy. Organ DC differences between a phantom of a given size and a reference phantom vary by up to 40% for the same height and up to 400% for the whole phantom. The influence of body size differences on the DCs demonstrates that the body-size-dependent Chinese adult phantoms hold great promise for a wide range of applications in radiation dosimetry.

Resource availability modulates the effect of body size on reproductive development

Within-species variation in animal body size predicts major differences in life history, for example, in reproductive development, fecundity, and even longevity. Purely from an energetic perspective, large size could entail larger energy reserves, fuelling different life functions, such as reproduction and survival (the "energy reserve" hypothesis). Conversely, larger body size could demand more energy for maintenance, and larger individuals might do worse in reproduction and survival under resource shortage (the "energy demand" hypothesis). Disentangling these alternative hypotheses is difficult because large size often correlates with better resource availability during growth, which could mask direct effects of body size on fitness traits. Here, we used experimental body size manipulation in the freshwater cnidarian Hydra oligactis, coupled with manipulation of resource (food) availability to separate direct effects of body size from resource availability on fitness traits (sexual development time, fecundity, and survival). We found significant interaction between body size and food availability in sexual development time in both males and females, such that large individuals responded less strongly to variation in resource availability. These results are consistent with an energy reserve effect of large size in Hydra. Surprisingly, the response was different in males and females: small and starved females delayed their reproduction, while small and starved males developed reproductive organs faster. In case of fecundity and survival, both size and food availability had significant effects, but we detected no interaction between them. Our observations suggest that in Hydra, small individuals are sensitive to fluctuations in resource availability, but these small individuals are able to adjust their reproductive development to maintain fitness.

The selected genes NR6A1, RSAD2-CMPK2, and COL3A1 contribute to body size variation in Meishan pigs through different patterns

The high-fertility Meishan pig is currently categorized into medium sized (MMS) and small sized (SMS) based on body size. To identify causal genes responsible for the variation in body size within the two categories, we sequenced individuals representing the entire consanguinity of the existing Meishan pig. This enabled us to conduct genome selective signal analysis. Our findings revealed the genomes of MMS and SMS are stratified, with selective sweep regions formed by differential genomic intervals between the two categories enriched in multiple pig body size related quantitative trait loci (QTLs). Furthermore, the missense mutation c.575T > C of candidate causal gene NR6A1, accounting for the variation in lumbar vertebrae number in pigs, was positively selected in MMS only, leading to an increase in body length of MMS at 6 months of age. To precisely identify causal genes accounting for body size variation through multi-omics, we collected femoral cartilage and liver transcription data from MMS and SMS respectively, and re-sequencing data from pig breeds exhibiting varying body sizes. We found that two selected regions where the RSAD2-CMPK2 and COL3A1 genes are located, respectively, showed different haplotypes in pig breeds of varying body size, and was associated with body or carcass length in hybridized Suhuai pig. Additionally, the above three hub genes, were significantly greater expressed in SMS femoral cartilage and liver tissues compared to MMS. These three genes could strengthen the pathways related to bone resorption and metabolism in SMS, potentially hindering bone and skeletal development and resulting in a smaller body size in SMS. These findings provide valuable insights into the genetic mechanism of body size variation in Meishan pig population.
