Abstract
We aimed to clarify the changes in facial morphology of cats in relation to their interactions with humans. In Study 1, we compared the facial morphology of cats (feral mixed breed, owned domestic mixed breed, and owned domestic purebreds) with that of African wildcats. After collecting 3295 photos, we found that owned domestic cats' noses were significantly shorter than those of African wildcats and feral mixed breed, and there were no significant differences between the latter two. The eye angles were significantly more gradual in owned domestic purebreds than in the other groups. In Study 2, we examined the correlation between facial morphology and years with the owner, and found that the former is not affected by the latter. This suggests that changes in facial morphology are possibly transgenerational changes. The difference in facial morphology between wildcats and owned cats might be caused by domestication, and that between feral cats and owned cats might be due to feralization. In Study 3, we investigated whether cats' facial features affect cuteness ratings. We asked human participants to evaluate the cuteness of cats' face images and found that faces with shorter nose lengths were considered cuter. This suggests that owned domestic cats' facial morphology is preferred by humans.

Abstract
We investigated whether Father Christmas has a distinguishable facial phenotype by performing a cross-sectional cohort study examining the facial feature vectors of all publicly available photographs obtained from a google image search of individuals meeting our eligibility criteria presenting as Father Christmas compared with other adult and elderly bearded men. Facial feature vectors were determined using the open-source OpenFace facial recognition system and assessed by support vector machines (SVM). SVM classifiers were trained to distinguish between the facial feature vectors from our groups. Accuracy, precision, and recall results were calculated and the area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) were reported for each classifier. SVM classifiers were able to distinguish the face of Father Christmas from other adult men with a high degree of accuracy and could discriminate Father Christmas from elderly bearded men but with lower accuracy. Father Christmas appears to have a distinct facial phenotype when compared to adult men and elderly bearded men. This will be reassuring to children who may be keen to recognise him but raises some interesting questions about the careful use of two-dimensional facial analysis, particularly when employed to explore the relationships between genotype and facial phenotype in a clinical dysmorphology setting.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SZ) are characterized by difficulty with social cognition and atypical reception of facial communication - a key area in the Research Domain Criteria framework. To identify areas of overlap and dissociation between ASD and SZ, we review studies of event-related potentials (ERP) to faces across ASD and SZ populations, focusing on ERPs implicated in social perception: P100, N170, N250, and P300. There were many inconsistent findings across studies; however, replication was strongest for delayed N170 latency in ASD and attenuated N170 amplitude in SZ. These results highlight the challenges of replicating research findings in heterogeneous clinical populations and the need for transdiagnostic research that continuously quantifies behavior and neural activity across neurodevelopmental disorders.

Abstract
In this study, we explored the factors relating to face and body visibility in young men who have sex with men (YMSM) from online dating applications. Research on visual self-presentation in online dating applications, especially in YMSM, remains scarce. The sample consisted of 339 young men (ages 18-24 years) who had casual sex with one or more male partners from online dating applications. Participants completed an online survey asking how visible their face and body were on their profile pictures. For body visibility, participants rated the visibility of their upper and lower body separately. We also computed difference scores between face and body visibility to measure face visibility in relation to body visibility (e.g., showing more-visible face compared to body). Predictors included self-rated attractiveness, fear of being identified on the applications, and motives for application use. Participant age and duration of application use were statistically controlled in all analyses. Results showed that higher perceived attractiveness related to higher upper- and lower-body visibility on profile pictures. Greater fear of being identified related to lower face visibility and less-visible face relative to upper- and lower-body visibility. Having a relationship motive was associated with higher face visibility. Older age and longer duration of application use were associated with more-visible face relative to lower body. The findings contribute to the literature on visual self-presentation in online dating applications in young and vulnerable sexual minorities.

Abstract
Konrad Lorenz, an ethologist, proposed that certain physical elements are perceived as cute and induce caretaking behavior in other individuals, with the evolutionary function of enhancing offspring survival. He called these features Kindchenschema, baby schema. According to his introspection, these include a large forehead, chubby round features, and chubby cheeks. Previous studies are limited to examining the effects of these facial features on perceived cuteness. However, other morphological factors may be related to perceived cuteness. This study uses Bayesian optimization, one of the global sequential optimization methods for estimating unknown functions, to search for facial morphological features that enhance the perceptions of facial cuteness. We applied Bayesian optimization incorporating Gaussian process ordinal regression (GPOR), which allows an estimation of the latent cuteness function based on evaluations using the Likert scale. A total of 96 preschool children provided the facial images used in this study. We summarized the facial shape variations using methodologies of geometric morphometrics and principal component analysis (PCA) up to the third principal component (PC), which we refer to as the face space. A total of 40 participants evaluated the images created by warping the average facial texture of the children's faces with randomly generated parameters in the face space. Facial traits related to perceived cuteness were estimated based on the averaged cuteness function. Perceived cuteness was linked to the relative lower position of facial components and narrower jawline but not to the forehead height.

Abstract
Research suggests that own-race faces are naturally memorized in a more elaborate (e.g., many features of a face or the whole face) way, whereas other-race faces are memorized in a less elaborate (e.g., only selected features of the face) manner. Here, we tested if instructions for judgements about the whole face and a single facial feature modulated the other-race effect in face memory. White participants performed whole-face and single-feature tasks while memorizing White and Black faces for later recognition. Encoding instructions had a stronger impact on own-race than other-race faces. Whole-face instructions increased the other-race effect, whereas single-feature instructions decreased it. Own-race faces in the whole-face task demonstrated event-related potential (ERP) patterns of memory encoding comparable to previously observed natural memory encoding, suggesting naturally more elaborate encoding of own-race faces. ERPs of memory encoding for other-race faces were similar between task conditions and comparable to previously observed natural encoding patterns, suggesting naturally less elaborate encoding. No impact of the encoding tasks was found on ERPs related to memory retrieval, which may be an artefact of a perceptual task that does not enhance semantic details in memory. The current results indicate that some contributions to the other-race effect are more elaborate (more detailed) memory encoding for own-race faces and less elaborate (less detailed) memory encoding for other-race faces. This study also provides evidence for more malleability of own-race than other-race faces through task instructions, consistent with assumptions of perceptual learning theories of the other-race effect.

Abstract
Detection of changes in facial emotions is crucial to communicate and to rapidly process threats in the environment. This function develops throughout childhood via modulations of the earliest brain responses, such as the P100 and the N170 recorded using electroencephalography. Automatic brain signatures can be measured through expression-related visual mismatch negativity (vMMN), which reflects the processing of unattended changes. While increasing research has investigated vMMN processing in adults, few studies have been conducted on children. Here, a controlled paradigm previously validated was used to disentangle specific responses to emotional deviants (angry face) from that of neutral deviants. Latencies and amplitudes of P100 and N170 both decrease with age, confirming that sensory and face-specific activity is not yet mature in school-aged children. Automatic change detection-related activity is present in children, with a similar vMMN pattern in response to both emotional and neutral deviant stimuli to what previously observed in adults. However, vMMN processing is delayed in children compared to adults and no emotion-specific response is yet observed, suggesting nonmature automatic detection of salient emotional cues. To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating expression-related vMMN in school-aged children, and further investigations are needed to confirm these results.

Abstract
People differ in their tendency to infer others' personalities and abilities from their faces. An extreme form of such face-based trait inference (FBTI) is problematic because of its unwarranted impact on real-world decision making. Evolutionary perspectives on FBTI suggest that its inter-individual variation would be trait-specific: e.g. those who make extreme face-based inferences about trustworthiness may not necessarily do so about dominance. However, there are several psychological variables that can increase the FBTI extremity across traits. Here, we show that there is a generalized individual tendency to make extreme FBTI across traits, in support of the latter view. We found that the degrees of extremity of face-based inferences about seven traits had high cross-trait correlations, constituting a general factor. This generalized FBTI extremity had good test-retest reliability and was neither an artefact of extreme nor socially desirable response biases. Moreover, it was positively associated with facial emotion recognition ability and tendencies to believe physiognomy and endorse stereotypes. Our results demonstrate that there are individuals who have a temporally stable disposition to draw extreme conclusions about various traits of others from facial appearance as well as their psychological characteristics.

Abstract
There has been a wide use of thermal images of the human body in recent years, specifically images with thermal information of regions of interest (ROI) in the face; this information can be used for epidemiological, clinical, and/or psychological purposes. Due to this, it is important to have plenty of information on temperature in these ROIs in the basal state that allows their use as a reference in terms of their thermal analysis. In this work, a face thermal map of the Mexican population in the basal state (n = 196) is created, adding the comparison between different population groups, such as gender, age, and clinical status, obtaining results of great interest for future research. The t-test for independent samples was applied to the ROIs with normal distribution and Mann−Whitney u-test to the ones that did not present normal distribution. Statistically significant differences were found in some of the ROI comparisons like the corrugator, the supraorbitals, and the chin between the control and clinical groups, as well as in the differentiation by age (p < 0.05).

Abstract
Facial skin temperature has been applied to evaluate thermal comfort in a few studies, but the related theoretical basis is not sufficient. We conducted a climate-controlled experiment in winter. The air temperatures were 12, 15, 18, 21, and 24°C, and the relative humidity was set to 60%. During exposure (140 min), the subjects were in a sedentary state, and their thermal sensation, comfort, and acceptability of perceived thermal environments were documented many times. iButton instruments were used to continuously and automatically record skin temperatures on the forehead, nose, right ear, right cheek, left cheek, left ear, and chin. The measurement accuracy of the corrected skin temperature was within 0.1°C after calibrating each i-Button. The experimental results showed that the skin temperatures at different measurement points varied significantly. The forehead skin temperature was the highest, whereas the nose, being the facial part, exhibited the lowest skin temperature (except 24°C). The uneven degree of the skin temperature distribution increased as air temperature decreased. Correlation analysis confirmed that the facial skin temperature can be used to evaluate thermal sensation. Nose skin temperature and the average skin temperature of the forehead, nose, and chin are the most suitable indicators of thermal sensation. The correlation between facial skin temperature and the thermal sensation was significantly higher after 15 min of exposure time than that during 0-15 min. This study provides a theoretical basis for using facial skin temperature to dynamically monitor thermal sensations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate COVID-19 cases and vaccine responses among workers in the gaming/entertainment industry. METHODS Participants provided detailed information on occupational risk factors, demographics, COVID-19 history, and vaccination status through questionnaire. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to measure serum antiviral antibodies and neutralizing capacity. RESULTS Five hundred-fifty individuals participated with n = 228 (41.5%) returning for follow-up. At least 71% of participants were fully vaccinated within 8 months of vaccine availability and COVID-19 rates declined concomitantly. Serum anti-spike IgG levels and neutralizing capacity were significantly (P < 0.001) associated COVID-19 history and vaccine type, but not occupational risk factors, and declined (on average 36%) within 5 months. Few vaccine nonresponders (n = 12) and "breakthrough" infections (n = 1) were noted. CONCLUSIONS COVID-19 vaccination was associated with a marked decrease in infections; however, individual humoral responses varied and declined significantly over time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate three of the main verbal models that have been proposed to explain the relationship between fluctuating asymmetry and fitness in humans: the "good genes," the "good development," and the "growth" hypotheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS A formal model was generated for each verbal model following three steps. First, based on the literature, a theoretical causal model and the theoretical object of inquiry were outlined. Second, an empirical causal model and the targets of inference were defined using observational data of facial asymmetries and life-history traits related to fitness. Third, generalized linear models and causal inference were used as the estimation strategy. RESULTS The results suggest that the theoretical and empirical assumptions of the "good genes" hypothesis should be reformulated. The results were compatible with most of the empirical assumptions of "the good development" hypothesis but suggest that further discussion of its theoretical assumptions is needed. The results were less informative about the "growth" hypothesis, both theoretically and empirically. There was a positive association between facial fluctuating asymmetry and the number of offspring that was not compatible with any of the empirical causal models evaluated. CONCLUSIONS Although the three hypotheses focus on different aspects of the link between asymmetry and fitness, their overlap opens the possibility of a unified theory on the subject. The results of this study make explicit which assumptions need to be updated and discussed, facilitating the advancement of this area of research. Overall, this study elucidates the potential benefit of using formal models for theory revision and development.

Abstract
The human face is one of the most visible features of our unique identity as individuals. Interestingly, monozygotic twins share almost identical facial traits and the same DNA sequence but could exhibit differences in other biometrical parameters. The expansion of the world wide web and the possibility to exchange pictures of humans across the planet has increased the number of people identified online as virtual twins or doubles that are not family related. Herein, we have characterized in detail a set of "look-alike" humans, defined by facial recognition algorithms, for their multiomics landscape. We report that these individuals share similar genotypes and differ in their DNA methylation and microbiome landscape. These results not only provide insights about the genetics that determine our face but also might have implications for the establishment of other human anthropometric properties and even personality characteristics.

Abstract
Infant and young child electrophysiology studies have provided information regarding the maturation of face-encoding neural processes. A limitation of previous research is that very few studies have examined face-encoding processes in children 12-48 months of age, a developmental period characterized by rapid changes in the ability to encode facial information. The present study sought to fill this gap in the literature via a longitudinal study examining the maturation of a primary node in the face-encoding network-the left and right fusiform gyrus (FFG). Whole-brain magnetoencephalography (MEG) data were obtained from 25 infants with typical development at 4-12 months, and with follow-up MEG exams every ∼12 months until 3-4 years old. Children were presented with color images of Face stimuli and visual noise images (matched on spatial frequency, color distribution, and outer contour) that served as Non-Face stimuli. Using distributed source modeling, left and right face-sensitive FFG evoked waveforms were obtained from each child at each visit, with face-sensitive activity identified via examining the difference between the Non-Face and Face FFG timecourses. Before 24 months of age (Visits 1 and 2) the face-sensitive FFG M290 response was the dominant response, observed in the left and right FFG ∼250-450 ms post-stimulus. By 3-4 years old (Visit 4), the left and right face-sensitive FFG response occurred at a latency consistent with a face-sensitive M170 response ∼100-250 ms post-stimulus. Face-sensitive left and right FFG peak latencies decreased as a function of age (with age explaining greater than 70% of the variance in face-sensitive FFG latency), and with an adult-like FFG latency observed at 3-4 years old. Study findings thus showed face-sensitive FFG maturational changes across the first 4 years of life. Whereas a face-sensitive M290 response was observed under 2 years of age, by 3-4 years old, an adult-like face-sensitive M170 response was observed bilaterally. Future studies evaluating the maturation of face-sensitive FFG activity in infants at risk for neurodevelopmental disorders are of interest, with the present findings suggesting age-specific face-sensitive neural markers of a priori interest.

Abstract
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by treponema pallidum. Its rash usually affects the trunk and limbs extensively, including the palms and soles of the feet. Secondary syphilis confined to the face is extremely rare. We report a case of annular rupioid secondary syphilis, which was misdiagnosed as verruca vulgaris. The patient's lesions were confined to the face and resembled oyster shells. According to epidemiological history, clinical presentation, non-treponemal tests, treponemal tests, and effective benzathine penicillin G treatment, confirmed secondary syphilis.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This review aimed to evaluate the association between craniofacial features in children and adolescents with pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). METHODS Seven databases were searched to fulfill our research objectives. Clinical studies that included participants younger than 18 years with fully diagnosed OSA or without OSA and that evaluated skeletal, soft craniofacial features, or dental arch morphology were considered for this review. The risk of bias and certainty of evidence were assessed. A meta-analysis was performed when low methodological and clinical heterogeneity were detected. This review followed the protocols recommended by the Preferred Reporting Items for a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA-2020) guidelines. RESULTS Nine studies were identified at the end of the selection process, from which 5 did not report differences. Four studies reported differences between craniofacial features when OSA was compared to an asymptomatic control group. Mandibular retrognathia, reduced anteroposterior linear dimensions of the bony nasopharynx (decreased pharyngeal diameters at the levels of the adenoids), longer facial profile, and a narrower intercanine width were described among children with OSA. A meta-analysis was performed considering the studies with a similar methodological approach, and no differences were observed in all the considered cephalometric angles (SNA, SNB, ANB, NSBa, U1-L1, U1-SN). All the included studies were considered at low risk of bias even though some limitations were noted. CONCLUSIONS Due to the very low to moderate level of certainty, neither an association nor a lack thereof between craniofacial morphology and pediatric OSA can be supported by these data. Abstract
Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common precancerous condition found on chronically sun-damaged skin, particularly on the face, scalp, arms, and legs. Early and effective treatment of AKs is important to prevent progression to squamous cell carcinoma. Many topical treatments for AKs are often limited because of poor tolerability, prolonged treatment duration, and reduced adherence. Tirbanibulin 1% ointment, a new topical field therapy for AKs, reduces these issues. It requires a consecutive 5-day application period and is effective, demonstrating complete (100%) clearance of AK lesions in 49% of patients, partial (>75%) clearance in 72%, and a median reduction in lesion count of 87.5% while exhibiting a favorable safety profile, mild adverse events, improved tolerability, and long-term results.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVE Childhood participation in boxing and martial arts has increased over the past decade, and these activities are well-known causes of traumatic injury. We hypothesized that the face is frequently injured in the setting of pediatric boxing and martial arts trauma in the United States and that there are identifiable injury patterns. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional study of consecutive pediatric patients in the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2019. Patients were included in our study if they were younger than 18 years of age and evaluated in the emergency department (ED) after boxing or martial arts trauma. Primary outcome was facial injury. Other variables of interest include age, sex, ED disposition, type and location of injury. Descriptive and univariate statistics of the primary outcome were computed with these variables. RESULTS There were 4,978 total pediatric patients injured due to boxing and martial arts trauma reported by NEISS-participating EDs during the study period, and 264 patients experienced injury to the face (264/4978; 5.3%). Over 20% (n = 60) of reported facial injuries were fractures; the most fractured structure was the nose (42/60; 70), orbit (11/60; 18.3%), and mandible (6/60; 10%). Almost 20% (11/60%) of pediatric facial fractures due to boxing and martial arts trauma involved fighting a family member or friend, and a punch was the most common mode of fracture (42/58; 72.4%). CONCLUSIONS Facial injuries comprise about 5% of injuries after boxing and martial arts trauma and 22% of these facial injuries are fractures. If children choose to participate, parents, coaches, trainers, officials, and community leaders should make the greatest effort possible to minimize risk, including the mandatory use of head and face protective gear and elimination of training fighting, or "sparring."

Abstract
The chemotherapeutic agent oxaliplatin is commonly used to treat colorectal cancer. Although effective as a chemotherapeutic, it frequently produces painful peripheral neuropathies. These neuropathies can be divided into an acute sensitivity to cool temperatures in the mouth and face, and chronic neuropathic pain in the limbs and possible numbness. The chronic neuropathy also includes sensitivity to cool temperatures. Neurons that detect cool temperatures are reported to utilize Transient Receptor Potential Cation Channel, Subfamily M, Member 8 (TRPM8). Therefore, we investigated the effects of oxaliplatin on facial nociception to cool temperatures (18°C) in mice and on TRPM8 expressing trigeminal ganglion (TRG) neurons. Paclitaxel, a chemotherapeutic that is used to treat breast cancer, was included for comparison because it produces neuropathies, but acute cool temperature sensitivity in the oral cavity or face is not typically reported. Behavioral testing of facial sensitivity to 18°C indicated no hypersensitivity either acutely or chronically following either chemotherapeutic agent. However, whole cell voltage clamp experiments in TRPM8 expressing TRG neurons indicated that both oxaliplatin and paclitaxel increased Hyperpolarization-Activated Cyclic Nucleotide-Gated channel (HCN), voltage gated sodium channel (Nav), and menthol evoked TRPM8 currents. Voltage gated potassium channel (Kv) currents were not altered. Histological examination of TRPM8 fibers in the skin of the whisker pads demonstrated that the TRPM8 expressing axons and possible Merkel cell-neurite complexes were damaged by oxaliplatin. These findings indicate that oxaliplatin induces a rapid degeneration of TRG neuron axons that express TRPM8, which prevents evoked activation of the sensitized neurons and likely leads to reduced sensitivity to touch and cool temperatures. The changes in HCN, Nav, and TRPM8 currents suggest that spontaneous firing of action potentials may be increased in the deafferented neurons within the ganglion, possibly producing spontaneously induced cooling or nociceptive sensations.

Abstract
Keratosis pilaris rubra (KPR) is a subtype of keratosis pilaris (KP) presenting with numerous "grainlike" follicular papules in a background of confluent erythema most often affecting the face and upper extremities with persistence beyond puberty. Treatment has remained challenging with inconsistent benefit from topical therapies such as emollients, keratolytics, corticosteroids, and retinoids, though case reports documenting success with pulsed dye laser therapy have been found. We present a case of KPR in a 15-year-old boy who was successfully treated with topical sirolimus 1% cream.

Abstract
Darwin's book on expressions of emotion was one of the first publications to include photographs (Darwin, The expression of the emotions in Man and animals, 1872). The inclusion of expression photographs meant that readers could form their own opinions and could, like Darwin, survey others for their interpretations. As such, the images provided an evidence base and an 'open source'. Since Darwin, increases in the representativeness and realism of emotional expressions have come from the use of composite images, colour, multiple views and dynamic displays. Research on understanding emotional expressions has been aided by the use of computer graphics to interpolate parametrically between different expressions and to extrapolate exaggerations. This review tracks the developments in how emotions are illustrated and studied and considers where to go next.

Abstract
A case of large ulcerative basal cell carcinoma was reported here. The patient had a history of skin ulceration on the right face 20 years ago, which has not been paid attention to. Recently the area of ulcer gradually increasing, and consciously affects the function, so the patient came to our hospital for the sake of treatment. The diagnosis of right facial basal cell carcinoma (T4NXMX) was made by MRI, CT and histopathological examination. After improving the preoperative examination, surgical treatment was performed on May 10, 2020, the postoperative flap survived, the face recovered well, there was no recurrence after 6 months follow-up, the result was satisfied, and it is still in the follow-up.

Abstract
Drug-induced hyperpigmentation is an adverse cutaneous effect; it has been associated with several systemic medications. A healthy 40-year-old man developed facial and dorsal hand hyperpigmentation within two weeks of beginning doxycycline monohydrate 100 milligrams twice daily for acne. Skin pigmentation significantly diminished at a follow-up evaluation two months after discontinuing the medication. Doxycycline-associated skin hyperpigmentation, albeit uncommon, has been described in 18 patients in the literature, including our patient. The demographics included 13 males and five females ranging in age from 11 to 87 years; eight of the patients were less than 50 years old and ten of the patients were over 60 years old. Doxycycline-associated hyperpigmentation frequently occurs on the face and can occur at the site of a previous scar. In most cases, doxycycline was discontinued with the resolution of hyperpigmentation.

Abstract
It is widely agreed that China is experiencing a substantial transition toward modernization. However, both business behavior and day-to-day life in China are still greatly influenced and regulated by the traditional culture that has been embedded in Chinese society for thousands of years. Therefore, when studying social phenomena in China, researchers must take the indigenous cultural context into account. Focusing on the young generation in China, the authors explore the relationships between the most fundamental traditional concepts and various value dimensions. Three hundred and thirty-two university students in Southeast China took part in the survey and data were analyzed with SPSS. The result might help both scholars and practitioners to better understand the contemporary Chinese culture. The discussion and implications are also offered.

Abstract
The homunculus in primary somatosensory cortex (S1) is famous for its body part selectivity, but this dominant feature may eclipse other representational features, e.g., information content, also relevant for S1 organization. Using multivariate fMRI analysis, we ask whether body part information content can be identified in S1 beyond its primary region. Throughout S1, we identify significant representational dissimilarities between body parts but also subparts in distant non-primary regions (e.g., between the hand and the lips in the foot region and between different face parts in the foot region). Two movements performed by one body part (e.g., the hand) could also be dissociated well beyond its primary region (e.g., in the foot and face regions), even within Brodmann area 3b. Our results demonstrate that information content is more distributed across S1 than selectivity maps suggest. This finding reveals underlying information contents in S1 that could be harnessed for rehabilitation and brain-machine interfaces.
