Abstract
Changes in the levels of plasma cortisol, progesterone and total testosterone were examined in developing hairless and haired dogs. Cortisol levels in the hairless dogs seemed to be higher than those in haired dogs within the age of 4-5 weeks. No apparent changes were seen in the level of plasma progesterone between the groups of hairless females and haired females. Total testosterone levels in hairless males showed to be significantly lower than those in haired males at the age of 13-21 weeks.

Abstract
We tested the hypothesis that treatment of growing, susceptible (to hip dysplasia) pups by IM administration of glycosaminoglycan polysulfates would mitigate the signs of incipient hip dysplasia. In 1 experiment, 7 pups, selected at random from 2 litters, were administered glycosaminoglycan polysulfates (2.5 mg/kg of body weight, IM) twice weekly, and 7 control pups from the same litters were given sterile buffered 0.9% saline solution from the age of 6 weeks to 8 months. Hip joints were examined by radiography, with pups in the standard, limbs-extended position. At 8 months of age, all pups in this experiment did not manifest femoral head subluxation radiographically. The Norberg angle, a measure of coxofemoral congruity, improved from a mean +/- SEM value of 102 degrees +/- 1 degrees in controls to 106 degrees +/- 1 degrees in treated pups (P = 0.008). Pups were not subjected to necropsy. In the second experiment, 8 pups were selected at random from 2 litters and were administered 5 mg of glycosaminoglycan polysulfates/kg, IM, twice weekly from 6 weeks to 8 months of age. Similarly, 8 control pups were administered saline solution. At 8 months of age, hip joints were examined by radiography with pups in the standard position; at necropsy, intra-articular tissues were evaluated macroscopically and biochemically. Of 8 treated pups, none had subluxation radiographically, whereas 4 of 8 control dogs had femoral head subluxation. Mean Norberg angle on the radiographs was 109.7 degrees +/- 1.6 degrees for the treated group and was 101.5 degrees +/- 1.6 degrees for controls, representing a mean improvement in coxofemoral congruity of 8.2 degrees in the treated pups.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Energy intake and weight development were recorded in 5 adult Great Danes kept in outdoor kennels during maintenance, pregnancy and lactation. In periods with constant weights the energy requirement was 0.96 MJ DE/kg BW0.75/d with a minimum in summer (0.82) and a maximum in winter (1.1). In pregnancy (weight gain depending on litter size 7-15 kg) energy intake (ad-lib.-feeding) was similar to maintenance. During lactation energy intake reached 1.6-1.7 MJ DE/kg BW0.75/d with a dry matter intake of 83 g/kg BW0.75/d. Pups of great litters had to be fed with milk substitute for normal weight development.

Abstract
Numerous types of veterinary orthodontic treatments are reported in papers and during meetings, however little is generally known concerning craniofacial growth in dogs. Most statements in veterinary dental publications are drawn from human-oriented studies. This makes decision making in veterinary orthodontics difficult. The purpose of this paper is to review studies of craniofacial growth performed in dogs.

Abstract
Radiographs of 750 dogs were examined to determine whether the iliac crest ossification center was open or closed. The center was closed in most dogs by 2 years of age. Eighteen percent of dogs greater than or equal to 10 years old had open iliac crest ossification center; 10% of dogs greater than or equal to 14 years old had open iliac crest ossification center. Closure of the iliac crest ossification center is extremely variable and, in many dogs, occurs at later age than has been previously reported.

Abstract
The ontogeny of adenosine A2 receptor mRNA and adenosine A2 binding sites distributions was studied by in situ hybridization histochemistry and receptor autoradiography in pre- and post-natal rat striatum, postnatal dog striatum, and a human fetus striatum and compared to that of dopamine D1 and mu opiate receptors. The early postnatal striatum demonstrated heterogeneous distributions of adenosine A2 receptor mRNA and adenosine A2 binding sites with patches of dense labeling corresponding to dopamine D1 and mu opiate receptors enriched zones. This patchy pattern evolved to the homogeneous distribution observed in the adult. The higher intensity of adenosine A2 receptor mRNA enriched patches correspond at the microscopical level to a higher density of labeled neurons in the patches areas and also to a higher level of expression per labeled patches neuron than in the matrix ones. This demonstrates for the first time that differences in patch/matrix receptor density is at least partly linked to different levels of receptor gene expression.

Abstract
27 Great Danes (from 3 litters) were fed ad lib. (n = 9) or with an energy intake (n = 18) restricted to 80 and 70% of the paired ad lib. group, respectively, and a nearly equalized protein and nutrient supply meeting the current recommendations (8 dogs of the restricted groups were bearing weight loaded [15% of own BW] belts in the scapular region). Dogs were weighed weekly, shoulder height, approximate length of the forearm and foot were recorded in certain intervals. In plasma protein, urea, Ca, P, Cu, Zn, and alkaline phosphatase were determined. Intake of digestible energy (according to the results of digestive trials) was recorded daily.

Abstract
Juvenile dog knee with chronic carrageenin-induced arthritis was studied under general anesthesia with 15-microns and 50-microns-sized microspheres (MS) to compare the distribution of absolute and weight-standardized blood flow in normal and arthritic limbs and to localize possible sites of arteriovenous (AV) shunting. Arthritic joints had severe synovial and capsular hyperemia. Absolute as well as standardized blood flow was increased in juxta-articular epiphyses and patella. Shafts were atrophic and had decreased absolute flow but normal standardized flow. However, redistribution of blood flow occurred among regions within the shafts, e.g., in metaphyses away from growth plates. The mean nonentrapment of 15-microns MS was 13.8% in arthritic limbs and 4.2% in control limbs. The uptake of 50-microns MS was lower than that of 15-microns MS in all bony flow compartments due to differences in their rheologic behavior in larger arteries. The relative distribution of 50-microns MS and 15-microns MS varied considerably among regions within bone. Arthritis caused a net shift in the uptake of 50-microns MS relative to that of 15-microns MS from central to subchondral epiphyseal bone, evidencing precapillary vasodilation, but the relationship was strictly unchanged when bones were examined in toto. This result militates against the hypothesis of AV shunting in arthritic bone.

Abstract
The elbows of 13 puppy cadavers were dissected, samples were taken for light and electron microscopy, and the thickness of the articular cartilage of the distal humerus and proximal ulna was measured. Throughout post natal development differences were found in the arrangement of the growth plate and articular chondrocytes. At birth, the articular surface had remnants of a fibrous limiting membrane that was continuous with the perichondrium, a finding not previously recorded in dogs. Orientation of the collagen fibrils within the matrix of the articular cartilage was initially lacking but became established by three weeks. In the humerus cartilage canals were present up to 12 weeks old. The articular cartilage of the humeral condyle varied in thickness across the joint surface, being thicker on the medial than on the lateral side; it was also thicker at the apex of the medial coronoid process. These regions of thick cartilage correspond with the sites where cartilage defects arise in elbow osteochondrosis. No histological evidence was found that the medial cornoid process of the ulna is a separate centre of ossification.

Abstract
Using a 1-stage random-digit dial telephone survey, we estimated the number of pet dogs and cats and cancer case ascertainment in the principal catchment area of an animal tumor registry in Indiana, the Purdue Comparative Oncology Program (PCOP). These findings will assist in the estimation of pet cancer incidence rates for the PCOP. The estimated canine and feline populations for Marion County were 144,039 (95% confidence interval, 121,555 to 166,523) and 94,998 (74,384 to 115,648), respectively. For Tippecanoe County (excluding university housing residences), the estimated canine population was 18,000 (14,445 to 21,555), whereas the estimated feline population was 17,165 (12,569 to 21,761). The estimated cancer case ascertainment was 88.3% (dogs, 92.5%; cats, 83.0%) with no statistically significant difference in the estimated ascertainment by county of residence or by species of pet. The amount that owners report themselves willing to pay for treatment of cancer in dogs or cats, however, differed in counties polled. This method's appropriateness for estimating pet populations in general and the validity of the data gathered were supported by response rate of 88.0% and by concurrence with census data for household characteristics previously documented to be associated with pet dog and cat ownership.

Abstract
Postnatal development and variation of the bony cranial border of the lateral vertebral foramen (LVF) of the atlas was studied in 96 dogs. Developmental ossification was investigated in 8 known-aged Miniature Schnauzer pups, after each atlas was prepared either as an alizarin-red stained clearing or as a dried cleaned bone. Variation was investigated in 63 atlases from mature dogs and by study of radiographs from 25 mature dogs of various breeds. The soft tissue structures passing through the LVF and attaching to its cranial border were dissected in an additional 2 embalmed and 2 fresh cadavers. In 2-week-old pups, the LVF was represented by a notch in the cranial margin of the bony arch of the atlas, with a cartilage bar completing the foramen cranially. Between 6 and 16 weeks the bar forming the cranial bony border of the LVF ossified in its preexisting cartilage anlage. In mature dogs, the LVF was present in the craniolateral aspect of the arch of the atlas and was recognized on lateral radiographs. The vertebral artery and vein, and first cervical nerve passed through the LVF and the atlantooccipital joint capsule and dorsal membrane attached to the cranial border of the LVF. In one dog the cranial border of the LVF of the atlas was incompletely ossified bilaterally. This developmental variant was compared with variations in man and other mammals, and with proatlas neural arch derivatives.

Abstract
Feeding a dog of a large breed with a diet exceeding the National Research Council (1974) recommendations for energy, protein, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D may result in disturbances of skeletal development. The effects of excess energy and various calcium:phosphorous ratios per se have been reported by others. The role of dietary protein, especially with regard to calcium metabolism and skeletal development, in large breed-dogs is reported in this article. Seventeen Great Dane pups, 7 wk of age, were divided into three groups. During 18 wk each group received isoenergetic dry food (approximately 15 kJ metabolizable energy/g) containing 31.6, 23.1 or 14.6% protein on dry matter basis. No differences were found among the high (H-Pr), normal (N-Pr) and low protein (L-Pr) groups for the height at the shoulder. Significant differences were found between the H-Pr and L-Pr groups for body weight and plasma albumin and among all three groups for plasma urea. The differences in protein intake per se had no demonstrable consequences for calcium metabolism and skeletal development. A causative role for dietary protein in the development of osteochondrosis in dogs is unlikely.

Abstract
The influence of dietary calcium on calcium metabolism was investigated in growing dogs that reach an adult body weight similar to that of humans. Seven groups of dogs (n greater than or equal to 5) were raised on a diet with a composition meeting the National Research Council (NRC) requirements (1974), but differing in calcium content, with or without a constant ratio to phosphorus. Control dogs fed 1.1% calcium and 0.9% phosphorus (all on a dry matter basis) were fed ad libitum (n = 10) or in restricted amounts (n = 6); dogs fed high calcium (3.3%) diets received either 0.9% phosphorus (n = 6) or 3.0% phosphorus (n = 6); dogs fed low calcium (0.55%) diets received either 0.9% phosphorus (n = 5 + 6) or 0.5% phosphorus (n = 8). Food intake, circulating total calcium and inorganic phosphorus concentrations and calcium metabolism, with 45Ca kinetics, were studied at 8, 14, 20 and 26 wk of age. Except for the difference in food intake in two groups at 14 wk (i.e., 0.55% calcium-0.9% phosphorus higher and 3.3% calcium-0.9% phosphorus lower, respectively, than the controls) no differences were noticed during the rest of the study. The mean plasma calcium concentrations did not differ between groups during the studies, whereas that of inorganic phosphorus revealed temporal aberrations in two groups. An absorption coefficient alpha of 45-66% was found for the control group. High and low calcium diets gave rise to values of 23-43% and 70-97%, respectively, for alpha irrespective of the phosphorus content of the diet.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
The growth of the heart, relative to body weight, was measured by M-mode echocardiography in dogs during the first year of life. Echocardiographic measurements were obtained from 16 English Pointers at 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks of age and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months of age. Left atrial (LA), aortic (AO), left and right ventricular internal dimensions, interventricular septal and left ventricular wall thickness measurements increased in curvilinear fashion relative to increasing body weight. Least-squares regression analysis, performed on logarithmically transformed data, was used to develop power-law equations describing the relationship of echocardiographic measurements to body weight. Linear dimensions of the LA, AO, left and right ventricular internal dimensions and interventricular septal and left ventricular wall thickness changed proportionally to slightly differing exponential powers of body weight (BW), varying from 0.31 to 0.45 (BW0.31 to BW0.45). Fractional shortening and the LA to AO ratio decreased slightly, but significantly, as body weight increased. Indexing echocardiographic measurements to BW1/3 was more appropriate than indexing such measures linearly to body weight, offering a practical method for developing accurate normative graphs or tables for M-mode echocardiographic dimensions in growing dogs.

Abstract
Dog foods with similar claims for nutritional adequacy were tested by chemical analysis and the American Association of Feed Control Officials' growth trial. All foods tested were similar chemically, however, dogs given one regionally marketed food had lower growth rate and food efficiency as well as suboptimal PCV and hemoglobin values during the growth trial. Pups fed this diet also had clinical signs typical of zinc and copper deficiencies. We concluded that American Association of Feed Control Officials' approved feeding tests provide valid assessment of pet food quality, and procedures involving only chemical analysis or calculated values may not.

Abstract
Experiments were carried out to study the digestibility of a cassava (gari) diet and its effect on growth in young male dogs. Three groups of dogs were fed on diets with rice (control), cassava (gari), and rice + cyanide respectively as the carbohydrate source. Each diet contained 130 g crude protein (nitrogen x 6.25)/kg, was supplemented with vitamins and minerals, and was fed for 14 weeks. Variables measured were body-weight gain, bone growth, plasma alkaline phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.1) activity, total serum 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) and some plasma free amino acids. The apparent digestibilities of dry matter, protein and fat were not significantly different in the three groups, but the digestibility of gari fibre was significantly lower than the digestibility of rice fibre when fed to dogs (P less than 0.05). Proximate analysis of the faeces showed that the group of dogs fed on the gari diet had faeces which had a significantly higher moisture content than the faeces of the other groups (P less than 0.05), and also a significantly higher fibre content (P less than 0.05). There was no significant difference in body-weight gain and bone growth between the control and gari-fed groups of dogs, but these variables were significantly lower in the dogs fed on the rice + cyanide diet (P less than 0.05). At the end of the 14-week experimental period total serum T3 and plasma alkaline phosphatase activity were not significantly different between the control group of dogs and the gari-fed group, but were significantly lower in the rice + cyanide group. Plasma free methionine, leucine, isoleucine and valine concentrations were higher in the rice + cyanide group of dogs than in the control group and the gari group, indicating that these amino acids were accumulating and not being utilized for protein synthesis and growth to the same extent in the rice + cyanide group of dogs as in the other groups. It was concluded that the digestibilities of cassava starch and rice starch were the same in the dog but that rice fibre was more digestible in the dog than cassava fibre. It was also concluded that growth proceeded normally when a balanced gari diet or a balanced rice diet containing 130 g crude protein/kg was fed to dogs, but growth was retarded when a balanced rice + cyanide diet containing 130 g crude protein/kg was fed to dogs because total serum T3 concentration became greatly depressed.

Abstract
Two diets similar in caloric density and mineral content, but markedly different in protein content, were used to study the effects of dietary protein on renal function and morphologic and histopathologic changes in dogs that had functional renal tissue reduced by seven-eights nephrectomy. The effects of moderate protein intake (MPrI = 15% protein; dry-matter basis) and high-protein intake (HPrI = 31% protein; dry-matter basis) were studied for the initial 7 months (period 1 [P1]) after renal mass reduction. Diets were then switched between groups during the following 7 months (period 2 [P2]) to evaluate the effects of increased or decreased protein intake. The HPrI caused significantly (P less than 0.05) greater glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and renal growth than did MPrI during P1. Dogs that maintained HPrI during P1 and MPrI during P2 (group 1) had significant (P less than 0.05) reduction in GFR during P2. Dogs that maintained MPrI during P1 and HPrI during P2 (group 2) had significant (P less than 0.05) improvement in GFR and renal growth during P2. At the end of the study, renal reserve was evaluated in both groups of dogs before and after group 1 was returned to HPrI for 2 weeks. During this 2-week feeding trial, group-1 dogs had marked improvement in renal reserve, relative to group 2, and GFR increased to the terminal P1 values. Results indicate a possible residual benefit from HPrI during the early phase of compensatory renal growth in the form of functional compensatory memory to HPrI. The severity of renal lesions was indistinguishable between dogs of dietary groups during both study phases.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Development of the testis, epididymis and prostate in 53 male beagles was examined histologically with PAS-hematoxylin stain from birth to sexual maturity. The diameter of the seminiferous tubules of the testes was less than 100 microns until 20 weeks of age, however, it increased markedly between 22 and 28 week of age, reaching 180 +/- 7 (mean +/- SD) microns at 28 weeks of age. Only Sertoli cells and gonocytes (or spermatogonia) were detected in the seminiferous tubules until 16 weeks of age. Spermatocytes and spermatids appeared in the tubules at 20 and 22 weeks of age, respectively. Spermatozoa were first observed in the testes of 2 of the 5 dogs at 26 weeks of age and were found in the testes of all the 3 dogs at 28 weeks of age. The diameter of the ducts in the cauda epididymidis was 146 +/- 4 microns at 20 weeks of age. Thereafter it increased markedly, reaching 341 +/- 14 microns at 28 weeks of age. The height of the epithelium and stereocilia in the ducts of the caput epididymidis increased markedly at about 28 weeks of age. A large number of spermatozoa was seen in the lumens of the ducts of the corpus and cauda epididymidis after 32 weeks of age. The shape of the lumens in the glandular alveoli of the prostate became irregular as a result of projection of the glandular epithelium into the enlarged lumens and the epithelial cells of the alveoli became PAS-positive at 24 weeks of age.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
In a 15-month study, the effects of prepubertal gonadectomy on skeletal growth, weight gain, food intake, body fat, secondary sex characteristics, and behavioral development were investigated in 32 mixed-breed dogs. Male and female pups from 5 litters were randomly allotted to 3 groups: group I, neuter at 7 weeks (n = 14); group II, neuter at 7 months (n = 8); and group III, sexually intact dogs (n = 10). Growth plate closure was delayed (group I vs group III; P less than 0.000001; group II vs group III, P less than 0.000001) in all neutered dogs, as compared with sexually intact dogs. Growth plate closure was delayed longer (group I vs group II, P less than 0.000045) in dogs neutered at 7 weeks old, compared with dogs neutered at 7 months old. The rate of growth was unaffected by gonadectomy, but the extended growth period resulted in greater final radial/ulnar length in all male dogs and bitches neutered at 7 weeks. Gonadectomy did not influence food intake, weight gain, or back-fat depth. Penile development was immature in the adult group-I males (mean +/- SEM diameter of pars glandis = 11.1 +/- 1.0 mm), compared with adult group-II (16.3 +/- 0.5 mm) and group-III (21.0 +/- 2.2 mm) males. Subjectively, the prepuce and os penis of the group-I males were immature, compared with those of group-II and group-III males. Vulvar development in group-I and group-II bitches was less mature than vulvar development in the sexually intact bitches. Of 7 behavioral characteristics assessed, only general activity and excitability rated differently among treatment groups. All neutered dogs were judged to be more active (group I, P less than 0.004) than sexually intact dogs. Group-I males were judged to be more excitable (P less than 0.02) than group-III males. It was concluded that with respect to skeletal, physical, and behavioral development, the effect of neutering pups at 7 weeks old was similar to that of neutering pups at 7 months old.

Abstract
Recordings of averaged brain stem auditory-evoked potentials were obtained from 13 Beagle pups of both genders to document the postnatal development of the response from age 1 to 76 days. Responses were recorded between needle electrodes placed on the vertex and the ipsilateral ear, with ground at the interorbital line. Recordings were performed without sedation. Low-amplitude responses to high-intensity stimuli could be recorded from animals prior to opening of the ear canals. Peak latencies did not change after day 20 for peak I, day 30 for peaks II and III, and day 40 for peak V. As a result, the interpeak latencies between peaks I and III did not change after day 30, but continued to decrease until day 40 for peaks III-V and I-V. Peak amplitudes reached plateau values by day 20 (peak I) or day 30 (peaks II, III, and V). All of the measured latency and amplitude values had significant (P less than 0.001) linear regression lines of latency vs age and amplitude vs age. The brain stem auditory-evoked potential thresholds were mature by day 20.

Abstract
The optimal level of beet pulp (BP) inclusion in a meat-based dog diet and the effects of graded levels of dietary BP on fecal excretion responses and mean retention time of marked fiber in the gastrointestinal tract of the dog were evaluated using 30 female English Pointers assigned to isonitrogenous diets containing 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 or 12.5% BP (DM basis). Beet pulp replaced portions of dietary cornstarch. Digestibilities of DM and OM decreased by an average of 6% when comparing diets containing BP to the control diet, and quadratic and cubic responses were noted in digestibilities of fiber constituents (lower values at the 7.5 and 10.0% levels, higher values at the 2.5, 5.0 and 12.5% levels). Digestible energy (DE) and ME intakes (kcal/d) were not affected by treatment, but when expressed as a percentage of GE, values decreased (4.8% for DE; 6.2% for ME) linearly with increasing BP levels. Wet weight of feces increased (from 117 to 374 g/d) linearly as percentage of dietary BP increased. Frequency of defecation was higher (P less than .05) for dogs fed the diet containing 12.5% BP than for dogs fed the other diets (5.2 vs mean value of 2.8/24 h). Mean retention time of marked fiber decreased linearly (high value of 23.4 h for the 2.5% BP treatment, low value of 13.0 h for the 10.0% BP treatment) with increased level of BP. Beet pulp levels up to 7.5% of diet DM appear acceptable as a dietary fiber source in a meat-based canine diet.
