Phototransformation of the fungicide tebuconazole, and its predicted fate in sunlit surface freshwaters

The fungicide tebuconazole (TBCZ) is expected to undergo negligible direct photolysis in surface freshwaters, but it can be degraded by indirect photochemistry. TBCZ mainly reacts with hydroxyl radicals and, to a lesser extent, with the triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (³CDOM*). Indirect photochemistry is strongly affected by environmental conditions, and TBCZ lifetimes of about one week are expected in sunlit surface waters under favourable circumstances (shallow waters with low concentrations of dissolved organic carbon, DOC, during summer). In these cases, the time trend would follow pseudo-first order kinetics (mono-exponential decay). Under less favourable conditions, photoinduced degradation would span over a few or several months, and TBCZ phototransformation would depart from an exponential trend because of seasonally changing sunlight irradiance. The TBCZ phototransformation products should be less toxic than their parent compound,thus photodegradation has potential to decrease the environmental impact of TBCZ. Hydroxylation is a major TBCZ transformation route, due to either OH attack, or one-electron oxidation sensitised by ³CDOM*, followed by reaction of the oxidised transient with oxygen and water.

Development of 2D graphene oxide sheets-based voltammetric sensor for electrochemical sensing of fungicide, carbendazim

Incorporating new pollutants and environmental pollution has become a formidable issue as new pollutants are introduced into it and have become a significant concern in recent years. Detection of such pollutants needs a susceptible, selective, and cost-effective sensor that can sense their presence and quantify them at a trace level. In the present study, we have designed a 2D graphene oxide (GO)-based glassy carbon electrode (GCE) electrochemical sensor (GO/GCE) and utilized it as a sensing material for the detection and determination of CRZ. The voltammetric behavior of CRZ was studied using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) techniques. The SWV was applied to quantify and analyze CRZ in actual samples. A better response of CRZ was noticed at GO/GCE when phosphate buffer solution of pH 4.2 was used as a supporting electrolyte for to experiment. The SWV technique achieved trace-level detection of CRZ. A linearity plot was obtained for the concentration range of 1.0 × 10^-7 M to 2.5 × 10^-4 M with a limit of detection of 1.38 × 10^-8 M. The selectivity of the modified sensor was verified by the interference study of metal ions and other pesticides with CRZ. The agricultural and environmental significance of the developed method was successfully tested by estimating CRZ in water and soil samples.

Copper Glufosinate-Based Metal-Organic Framework as a Novel Multifunctional Agrochemical

Pesticides are agrochemical compounds used to kill pests (insects, rodents, fungi, or unwanted plants), which are key to meet the world food demand. Regrettably, some important issues associated with their widespread/extensive use (contamination, bioaccumulation, and development of pest resistances) demand a reduction in the amount of pesticide applied in crop protection. Among the novel technologies used to combat the deterioration of our environment, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as innovative and promising materials in agroindustry since they possess several features (high porosity, functionalizable cavities, ecofriendly composition, etc.) that make them excellent candidates for the controlled release of pesticides. Moving toward a sustainable development, in this work, we originally describe the use of pesticides as building blocks for the MOF construction, leading to a new type of agricultural applied MOFs (or AgroMOFs). Particularly, we have prepared a novel 2D-MOF (namely, GR-MOF-7) based on the herbicide glufosinate and the widely used antibacterial and fungicide Cu²⁺. GR-MOF-7 crystallizes attaining a monoclinic P2₁/c space group, and the asymmetric unit is composed of one independent Cu²⁺ ion and one molecule of the Glu^2- ligand. Considering the significant antibacterial activity of Cu-based compounds in agriculture, the potential combined bactericidal and herbicidal effect of GR-MOF-7 was investigated. GR-MOF-7 shows an important antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli (involved in agricultural animal infections), improving the results obtained with its individual or even physical mixed precursors [glufosinate and Cu(NO₃)₂]. It is also an effective pesticide against germination and plant growth of the weed Raphanus sativus, an invasive species in berries and vines crops, demonstrating that the construction of MOFs based on herbicide and antibacterial/antifungal units is a promising strategy to achieve multifunctional agrochemicals. To the best of our knowledge, this first report on the synthesis of an MOF based on agrochemicals (what we have named AgroMOF) opens new ways on the safe and efficient MOF application in agriculture.

Massoia Lactone Displays Strong Antifungal Property Against Many Crop Pathogens and Its Potential Application

Massoia lactone could be released from liamocins produced by Aureobasidium melanogenum M39. The obtained Massoia lactone was very stable and highly active against many fungal crop pathogens which cause many plant diseases and food unsafety. Massoia lactone treatment not only could effectively inhibit their hyphal growth and spore germination, but also caused pore formation in cell membrane, reduction of ergosterol content, rise in intracellular ROS levels, and leakage of intracellular components, consequently leading to cellular necrosis and cell death. The direct contact of Massoia lactone with Fusarium graminearum spores could stop the development of Fusarium head blight symptom in the diseased wheats. Therefore, Massoia lactone could be a promising candidate for development as an effective and green bio-fungicide because of its high anti-fungal activity and the multiplicity of mode of its action.

Attenuation of toxicity and occurrence of degradation products of the fungicide tebuconazole after combined vacuum UV and UVC treatment of drinking water

Antifungal azoles are the most frequently used fungicides worldwide and occur as active ingredients in many antifungal pharmaceuticals, biocides, and pesticides. Azole fungicides are frequent environmental contaminants and can affect the quality of surface waters, groundwater, and drinking water. This study examined the potential of combined vacuum UV (185 nm) and UVC (254 nm) irradiation (VUV/UVC) of the azole fungicide tebuconazole and the transformation product 1,2,4-trizole on degradation and changes in ecotoxicity. In vivo ecotoxicity was examined before and after UV treatment using bioassays with test organisms from different trophic levels to integrate changes in biological effect of the parent compound and the degradation products. The test battery included the luminescent bacterium Aliivibrio fischeri, the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis, the fungus Fusarium graminearum, the green microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata, and the crustacean Daphnia magna. The combined VUV/UVC treatment of tebuconazole in drinking water efficiently degraded the parent compound at the µg/L-mg/L level and resulted in transformation products with lower toxicity than the parent compound. A direct positive correlation was observed between the applied UV dose (fluence, J/cm²), the disappearance of tebuconazole, and the decrease in ecotoxicity. The combined VUV/UVC process does not require addition of supplementary oxidants or catalysts and our study suggests that VUV/UVC-mediated photolysis of azole fungicides in water can decrease the overall toxicity and represent a potentially environmentally friendly treatment method.

Simultaneous determination of benzimidazole fungicides in food using signal optimized label-free HAu/Ag NS-SERS sensor

Extensively employed pesticide in agriculture causes residue in food products that would threaten public health safety. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal reliant on double sensing of carbendazim and thiabendazole in a single step is achieved without the aid of any bio-recognition element. A label-free anisotropic bimetallic hollow Au/Ag nanostars (HAu/Ag NS) SERS substrate was synthesized with numerous hot spots for Raman molecule through a galvanic displacement-free deposition. The individual and mixed analyte calibration results were compared based on the identified peak at 1224 (carbendazim) and 778 (thiabendazole) cm^-1 and exhibited insignificant differences. The sensor could detect carbendazim and thiabendazole up to 4.28 × 10^-4 and 6.04 × 10^-4 µg·g^-1 or µg·mL^-1 in both individual and mixture of their extract. The recovery for accuracy and precision analysis was 91.54-98.26 % in rice and water. Finally, validation results were achieved satisfactorily (p > 0.05) with HPLC.

A pilot study for enhanced transformation of a metabolite 3,5-dichloroaniline derived from dicarboximide fungicides through immobilized laccase mediator system

This pilot investigation aimed to evaluate the removal efficiency and the underlying biocatalytic pathways of immobilized fungal laccase during the oxidative biotransformation of a non-phenolic metabolite, 3,5-dichloroaniline (3,5-DCA) derived from dicarboximide fungicides. The maximum loading of laccase on the microporous support surfaces could reach 36.4 mg/g. The immobilized laccase on the microporous support surfaces exhibited excellent thermal stability, pH adaptability, storage stability, and reusability compared to free laccase. The ILMS assay indicated that the immobilized laccase efficiently removed studied 3,5-DCA (99-100%) in the aqueous medium, within 72 h in the presence of catechol. In this study, we identified three coupling reaction products during the removal of 3,5-DCA through an ILMS assay. Based on the identified coupling reaction products, we proposed the reaction pathway for the biotransformation of 3,5-DCA by immobilized laccase, which was shown to be potentially useful in the sustainable environmental remediation of aniline metabolite (i.e., 3,5-DCA) derived from dicarboximide fungicides.

Rational Design Yields Molecular Insights on Leaf-Binding of Anchor Peptides

In times of a constantly growing world population and increasing demand for food, sustainable agriculture is crucial. The rainfastness of plant protection agents is of pivotal importance to reduce the amount of applied nutrients, herbicides, and fungicides. As a result of protective agent wash-off, plant protection is lost, and soils and groundwater are severely polluted. To date, rainfastness of plant protection products has been achieved by adding polymeric adjuvants to the agrochemicals. However, polymeric adjuvants will be regarded as microplastics in the future, and environmentally friendly alternatives are needed. Anchor peptides (APs) are promising biobased and biodegradable adhesion promoters. Although the adhesion of anchor peptides to artificial surfaces, such as polymers, has already been investigated in theory and experimentally, exploiting the adhesion to biological surfaces remains challenging. The complex nature and composition of biological surfaces such as plant leaves and fruit surfaces complicate the generation of accurate models. Here, we present the first detailed three-layered atomistic model of the surface of apple leaves and use it to compute free energy profiles of the adhesion and desorption of APs to and from that surface. Our model is validated by a novel fluorescence-based microtiter plate (MTP) assay that mimics these complex processes and allows for quantifying them. For the AP Macaque Histatin, we demonstrate that aromatic and positively charged amino acids are essential for binding to the waxy apple leaf surface. The established protocols should generally be applicable for tailoring the binding properties of APs to biological interfaces.

Using biobeds for the treatment of fungicide-contaminated effluents from various agro-food processing industries: Microbiome responses and mobile genetic element dynamics

Agro-food processing industries generate large amounts of pesticide-contaminated effluents that pose a significant environmental threat if managed improperly. Biopurification systems like biobeds could be utilized for the depuration of these effluents although direct evidence for their efficiency are still lacking. We employed a column leaching experiment with pilot biobeds to (i) assess the depuration potential of biobeds against fungicide-contaminated effluents from seed-producing (carboxin, metalaxyl-M, fluxapyroxad), bulb-handling (thiabendazole, fludioxonil and chlorothalonil) and fruit-packaging (fludioxonil, imazalil) industries, (ii) to monitor microbial succession via amplicon sequencing and (iii) to determine the presence and dynamics of mobile genetic elements like intl1, IS1071, IncP-1 and IncP-1ε often associated with the transposition of pesticide-degrading genes. Biobeds could effectively retain (adsorbed but extractable with organic solvents) and dissipate (degraded and/or not extractable with organic solvents) the fungicides that were contained in the agro-industrial effluents with 93.1-99.98% removal efficiency in all cases. Lipophilic substances like fluxapyroxad were mostly retained in the biobed while more polar substances like metalaxyl-M and carboxin were mostly dissipated or showed higher leaching potential like metalaxyl-M. Biobeds supported a bacterial and fungal community that was not affected by fungicide application but showed clear temporal patterns in the different biobed horizons. This was most probably driven by the establishment of microaerophilic conditions upon water saturation of biobeds, as supported by the significant increase in the abundance of facultative or strict anaerobes like Chloroflexi/Anaerolinae, Acidibacter and Myxococcota. Wastewater application did not affect the dynamics of mobile genetic elements in biobeds whose abundance (intl1, IS1071, IncP-1ε) showed significant increases with time. Our findings suggest that biobeds could effectively decontaminate fungicide-contaminated effluents produced by agro-food industries and support a rather resilient microbial community.

Design and synthesis of novel 2,2-dimethylchromene derivatives as potential antifungal agents

In order to find novel environment-friendly and effective antifungal agents, four series of 2,2-dimethyl-2H-chromene derivatives were designed, synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic analysis. The antifungal activities of all the target compounds against nine phytopathogenic fungi were evaluated in vitro. Preliminary results indicated that most of the target compounds exhibited obvious antifungal activity at the concentration of 50 μg/mL. Among them, compound 4j displayed more promising antifungal potency against Fusarium solani, Pyricularia oryzae, Alternaria brassicae, Valsa mali and Alternaria alternata strains than the two commercially available fungicides chlorothalonil and hymexazol, with the corresponding EC₅₀ values of 6.3, 7.7, 7.1, 7.5, 4.0 μg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the cell experiments results suggested that the target compounds had low cytotoxicity to the PC12 cell. This research will provide theoretical basis for the future application of 2,2-dimethyl-2H-chromenes as botanical fungicides in agriculture. Four series of novel, potent and low-toxicity 2,2-dimethyl-2H-chromene derivatives were designed and synthesized as agricultural antifungal agents. The in vitro antifungal experiments showed that compound 4j exhibited higher antifungal efficacy against five strains than the two commercially-available fungicides chlorothalonil and hymexazol.

Natural plant products as effective alternatives to synthetic chemicals for postharvest fruit storage management

Fruits contain enormous source of vitamins that provides energy to the human body. These are also affluent in essential and vital vitamins, minerals, fiber, and health-promoting components, which has led to an increase in fruit consumption in recent years. Though fruit consumption has expanded considerably in recent years, the use of synthetic chemicals to ripen or store fruits has been steadily increasing, resulting in postharvest deterioration. Alternatives to synthetic chemicals should be considered to control this problem. Instead of utilizing synthetic chemicals, this study suggests using natural plant products to control postharvest decay. The aim of this study indicates how natural plant products can be useful and effective to eliminate postharvest diseases rather than using synthetic chemicals. Several electronic databases were investigated as information sources, including Google Scholar, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Semantic Scholar, MEDLINE, and CNKI Scholar. The current review focused on the postharvest of fruits has become more and more necessary because of these vast demands of fruits. Pathogen-induced diseases are the main component and so the vast portion of fruits get wasted after harvest. Besides, it may occur harmful during harvesting and subsequent handling, storage, and marketing and after consumer purchasing and also causes for numerous endogenous and exogenous diseases via activating ROS, oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, etc. However, pathogenicity can be halted by using postharvest originating natural fruits containing bioactive elements that may be responsible for the management of nutritional deficiency, inflammation, cancer, and so on. However, issues arising during the postharvest diseases must be controlled and resolved before releasing the horticultural commodities for commercialization. Therefore, the control of postharvest pathogens still depends on the use of synthetic fungicides; however, due to the problem of the development of the fungicide-resistant strains there is a good demand of public to eradicate the use of pesticides with the arrival of numerous diseases that are expanded in their intensity by the specific chemical product. By using of the organic or natural products for controlling postharvest diseases of fruits has become a mandatory step to take. In addition, antimicrobial packaging may have a greater impact on long-term food security by lowering the risk of pathogenicity and increasing the longevity of fruit shelf life. Taken together, natural chemicals as acetaldehyde, hexanal, eugenol, linalool, jasmonates, glucosinolates, essential oils, and many plant bioactive are reported for combating of the postharvest illnesses and guide to way of storage of fruits in this review.

Association between pesticide exposure and obesity: A cross-sectional study of 20,295 farmers in Thailand

Background: Obesity is a serious condition because it is associated with other chronic diseases which affect the quality of life. In addition to problems associated with diet and exercise, recent research has found that pesticide exposure might be another important risk factor. The objective of this study was to determine the association between pesticide exposure and obesity among farmers in Nakhon Sawan and Phitsanulok province, Thailand. 

Methods: This study was a population-based cross-sectional study. Data on pesticide use and obesity prevalence from 20,295 farmers aged 20 years and older were collected using an in-person interview questionnaire. The association was analysed using multivariable logistic regression, adjusted for its potential confounding factors. 

Results: Obesity was found to be associated with pesticide use in the past. The risk of obesity was significantly predicted by types of pesticides, including insecticides (OR = 2.10, 95% CI 1.00-4.38), herbicides (OR = 4.56, 95% CI 1.11-18.62), fungicides (OR = 2.12, 95% CI 1.34-3.36), rodenticides (OR = 2.55, 95% CI 1.61-4.05), and molluscicides (OR = 3.40, 95% CI 2.15-5.40). Among 35 surveyed individual pesticides, 22 were significantly associated with higher obesity prevalence (OR = 1.78, 95% CI 1.10-2.88 to OR = 8.30, 95% CI 2.54-27.19), including herbicide butachlor, 15 insecticides (two carbamate insecticides, five organochlorine insecticides, and eight organophosphate insecticides), and six fungicides. 

Conclusion: This study found obesity in farmers in Nakhon Sawan and Phitsanulok province, Thailand, to be associated with the long-term use of several types of pesticides. The issue should receive more public attention, and pesticide use should be strictly controlled.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Substrates for Food Safety and Quality Analysis

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has been identified as a fundamental surface-sensitive technique that boosts Raman scattering by adsorbing target molecules on specific surfaces. The application of SERS highly relies on the development of smart SERS substrates, and thus the fabrication of SERS substrates has been constantly improved. Herein, we investigate the impacts of different substrates on SERS technology including plasmonic metal nanoparticles, semiconductors, and hybrid systems in quantitative food safety and quality analysis. We first discuss the fundamentals, substrate designs, and applications of SERS. We then provide a critical review of the recent progress of SERS in its usage for screening and detecting chemical and biological contaminants including fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, hazardous colorants, and biohazards in food samples to assess the analytical capabilities of this technology. Finally, we investigate the future trends and provide practical techniques that could be used to fulfill the requirements for rapid analysis of food at a low cost.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Stemphylium Leaf Blight and Potential Inoculum Sources in New York Onion Fields

Stemphylium leaf blight (SLB) caused by Stemphylium vesicarium is the dominant foliar disease affecting large-scale onion production in New York. The disease is managed by fungicides, but control failures are prevalent and are attributed to fungicide resistance. Little is known of the relative role of inoculum sources in initiation and spread of SLB epidemics. Plate testing of 28 commercially available organic onion seedlots from 2016 and 2017 did not detect S. vesicarium. This finding suggests that although S. vesicarium has been reported as seed-transmitted, this is unlikely to be a significant inoculum source in commercially available organic seed lots and even less so in fungicide-treated seed used to establish conventional fields. The spatial and spatiotemporal dynamics of SLB epidemics in six onion fields were evaluated along linear transects in 2017 and 2018. Average SLB incidence increased from 0 to 100% throughout the cropping seasons with an average final lesion length of 28.3 cm. Disease progress was typical of a polycyclic epidemic and the logistic model provided the best fit to 83.3% of the datasets. Spatial patterns were better described by the beta-binomial than binomial distribution in half of the datasets (50%) and random patterns were more frequently observed by the index of dispersion (59%). Geostatistical analyses also found a low frequency of datasets with aggregation (60%). Spatiotemporal analysis of epidemics detected that the aggregation was influenced by disease incidence. However, diseased units were not frequently associated with the previous time period according to the spatiotemporal association function of spatial analyses by distance indices. Variable spatial patterns suggested mixed inoculum sources dependent upon location, and likely an external inoculum source at the sampling scale used in this study. A small-plot replicated trial was also conducted in each of 2 years to quantify the effect of S. vesicarium-infested onion residue on SLB epidemics in a field isolated from other onion fields. SLB incidence was significantly reduced in plots without residue compared with those in which residue remained on the soil surface. Burial of infested residue also significantly reduced epidemic progress in 1 year. The effect of infested onion residue on SLB epidemics in the subsequent onion crop suggests rotation or residue management may have a substantial effect on epidemics. However, the presence of an inoculum source external to fields in onion production regions, as indicated by a lack of spatial aggregation, may reduce the efficacy of in-field management techniques.

Carbendazim shapes microbiome and enhances resistome in the earthworm gut

BACKGROUND

It is worrisome that several pollutants can enhance the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment, including agricultural fungicides. As an important bioindicator for environmental risk assessment, earthworm is still a neglected focus that the effects of the fungicide carbendazim (CBD) residues on the gut microbiome and resistome are largely unknown. In this study, Eisenia fetida was selected to investigate the effects of CBD in the soil-earthworm systems using shotgun metagenomics and qPCR methods.

RESULTS

CBD could significantly perturb bacterial community and enrich specific bacteria mainly belonging to the phylum Actinobacteria. More importantly, CBD could serve as a co-selective agent to elevate the abundance and diversity of ARGs, particularly for some specific types (e.g., multidrug, glycopeptide, tetracycline, and rifamycin resistance genes) in the earthworm gut. Additionally, host tracking analysis suggested that ARGs were mainly carried in some genera of the phyla Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. Meanwhile, the level of ARGs was positively relevant to the abundance of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and some representative co-occurrence patterns of ARGs and MGEs (e.g., cmx-transposase and sul1-integrase) were further found on the metagenome-assembled contigs in the CBD treatments.

CONCLUSIONS

It can be concluded that the enhancement effect of CBD on the resistome in the earthworm gut may be attributed to its stress on the gut microbiome and facilitation on the ARGs dissemination mediated by MGEs, which may provide a novel insight into the neglected ecotoxicological risk of the widely used agrochemicals on the gut resistome of earthworm dwelling in soil. Pesticide Importation in Sierra Leone, 2010–2021: Implications for Food Production and Antimicrobial Resistance

There are no previous studies reporting the type and quantity of pesticides for farming from Sierra Leone and the impact of Ebola or COVID-19 on importation. This study reviewed imported farming pesticides by the Sierra Leone, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF), between 2010–2021. It was a descriptive study using routinely collected importation data. We found the MAF imported pesticides for farming only during 2010, 2014 and 2021, in response to growing food insecurity and associated with Ebola and COVID-19 outbreaks. Results showed insecticide importation increased from 6230 L in 2010 to 51,150 L in 2021, and importation of antimicrobial pesticides (including fungicides) increased from 150 kg in 2010 to 23,560 kg in 2021. The hazard class risk classification of imported pesticides decreased over time. Increasing amounts of imported fungicides could increase the risk of future fungal resistance among humans. We found that in responding to escalating food insecurity, the government dramatically increased the amount of pesticide importation to improve crop production. Further support is necessary to decrease the risk of worsening food shortages and the possible threat of emerging antimicrobial resistance. We recommend continued monitoring and surveillance, with further studies on the most appropriate response to these multiple challenges.

New Approaches to an Old Problem: Dollar Spot of Turfgrass

Dollar spot, caused by fungal pathogens Clarireedia spp. (formerly Sclerotinia homoeocarpa), is the most common and widely distributed disease of turfgrass worldwide. It can drastically reduce the quality of turfgrass species and affect their aesthetic value and playability. Management of dollar spot typically includes a costly program of multiple application of fungicides within a growing season. Consequently, there have been reported cases of fungicide resistance in populations of Clarireedia spp. Host resistance could be an important component of dollar spot management; however, this approach has been hampered by the lack of sources of resistance because nearly all known warm- and cool-season turfgrass species are susceptible. With the recent advancement in genome sequencing technologies, studies on pathogen genomics and host-pathogen interactions are emerging with the hope of revealing candidate resistance genes in turfgrass and genes for virulence and pathogenicity in Clarireedia spp. Large-scale screening of turfgrass germplasm and quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis for dollar spot resistance are important for resistance breeding, but only a handful of such studies have been conducted to date. This review summarizes currently available information on the dollar spot pathosystem, taxonomy, pathogen genomics, host-pathogen interaction, genetics of resistance, and QTL mapping and also provides some thoughts for future research prospects to better manage this disease.

Monitoring of the copper persistence on plant leaves using pulsed thermography

Copper-based fungicides are largely used in agriculture in the control of a wide range of plant diseases. Applied on plants, they remain deposited on leaf surfaces and are not absorbed into plant tissues. Because of accumulation problems and their ecotoxicological profiles in the soil, their use needs to be monitored and controlled, also by using modern technologies to better optimize the efficacy rendering minimum the amount of copper per season used. In this work, we test a novel approach based on pulsed thermography to evaluate the persistence of the copper on plant leaves so that the time between two applications should be the minimum needs. We monitored the thermal response observed on different treatments of both grapevine and tobacco plants over a 3-week period. Our experimental results demonstrate that the new methodological approach based on pulsed thermography can be an effective tool to evaluate in real time the presence of copper on differently treated plants allowing a tentative quantification and, therefore, to optimize its use in the agricultural practices, according also to the European Regulation n. 1107/2009.

Tree age and cultivar-oriented use of mineral oil added to fungicide tank mixture for the control of citrus black spot in sweet orange orchards

BACKGROUND

Mineral oil added to fungicide spray mixtures has been a frequently used strategy to control citrus black spot (CBS) worldwide. Although mineral oil may increase the efficacy of control, its use represents around 15% of the costs of a CBS spray program. This study aimed to assess the performance of different proportions of mineral oil added to a fungicide tank mixture for CBS control in young (less than 10 years old) and old (more than 12 years old) sweet orange orchards of early ('Hamlin'), mid-season ('Pera') and late-maturing ('Valencia') cultivars in São Paulo state, Brazil. The efficacy of 0.15%, 0.20% or 0.25% mineral oil added to a fungicide spray mixture was determined by assessing CBS incidence, severity and fruit drop in six orchards over two seasons.

RESULTS

Fungicide programs with or without oil were effective in reducing 100% CBS symptom expression in both young and old 'Hamlin' orchards and in the young 'Pera' orchard. The lowest mineral oil rate tested (0.15%) showed a reduction in CBS intensity of around 90%, similar to the highest rate tested in the old 'Pera' orchard. The highest cost-benefit program to control CBS in the old 'Valencia' orchard was obtained with the mineral oil rate of 0.25%, commonly used in the São Paulo citrus belt, which reduced CBS severity by up to 97%.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrated that mineral oil rates for CBS control can be adjusted according to tree age and cultivar. These findings contribute to the establishment of more sustainable citrus production by reducing spray costs while maintaining the efficacy of CBS control. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Impact of natural products on discovery of, and innovation in, crop protection compounds

Natural products (NPs) have long been an important source of, and inspiration for, developing novel compounds to control weeds, pathogens and insect pests. In this review, we use a dataset of 800 historic, current and emerging crop protection compounds to explore the influence of NPs on the introduction of new crop protection compounds (fungicides, herbicides, insecticides) as a function of time. NPs, their semisynthetic derivatives (NPDs) and compounds inspired by NPs (NP mimics, NPMs) account for 17% of all crop protection compounds. NPs, NPDs, and NPMs have been a fairly constant source of new agrochemicals over the past 70 years. NP synthetic equivalents (NPSEs) is a fourth group of NP-related crop protection compounds composed of synthetic compounds which by chance also happen to have an NP model (but are not involved in the discovery). If NPSE compounds are also included, then 50% of all crop protection compounds hypothetically could have had a NP origin. Similar trends also hold true for the impact of NPs on the discovery of new modes of action (MoA) or innovation in crop protection compounds as measured by the number of first-in-class compounds. NPs have had the largest impact on the numbers and global sales (2018 USD) of insecticides compared to fungicides and herbicides. The present analysis highlights NPs as a long-standing and continuing source of new chemistry, new MoAs and innovation in crop protection compound discovery. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Four Propiconazole Stereoisomers: Stereoselective Bioactivity, Separation via Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry, and Dissipation in Banana Leaves

In this study, we evaluated the stereoselective bioactivity of four propiconazole stereoisomers against the causal agents of the banana leaf spot disease (Curvularia lunata and Colletotrichum musae). We also evaluated the stereoselective degradation of the stereoisomers in banana leaves under field test conditions. The Superchiral S-OX column successfully separated the four propiconazole stereoisomers. X-ray single-crystal diffraction confirmed that the absolute configuration of the cis-stereoisomer-(+)-A of propiconazole was (2R,4S)-propiconazole and that of the cis-stereoisomer-(-)-A of propiconazole was (2S,4R)-propiconazole. In vitro antibacterial results revealed that (2R,4S)-(+)-propiconazole had the highest activity against the two target plant fungi. In this study, a new and efficient high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method was developed for the determination of the four stereoisomeric residues of propiconazole in banana leaves. The mean recoveries of the method for the stereoisomers were 76.3-103% with relative standard deviations of 1.25-11.4%. The four propiconazole stereoisomers had a detection limit of 0.002-0.006 mg/kg and a limit of quantification of 0.02-0.03 mg/kg in banana leaves. Propiconazole-(-)-B and propiconazole-(-)-A degraded slightly faster than their corresponding enantiomers propiconazole-(+)-B and propiconazole-(+)-A in banana leaves collected from three typical banana production areas.
