Abstract
The enhanced metathesis activity of 1,3-dimesityl-4,5-dihydroimidazole-2-ylidene ruthenium carbene catalyst 3 significantly increases the feasibility of synthesizing macrocyclic compounds. Catalyst 3 exhibits sufficient activity in RCM to dimerize alpha,beta-unsaturated ester substrates and afford the corresponding head-to-tail (E,E)-dimeric (and trimeric) macrocycles. The dimerization appears to be under thermodynamic control with the product mixture dependent not only on the electronic and steric nature of the substrate but also on concentration.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of single-crystalline silver nanowires of atomic dimensions. The ultrathin silver wires with 0.4 nanometer width grow up to micrometer-scale length inside the pores of self-assembled calix[4]hydroquinone nanotubes by electro-/photochemical redox reaction in an ambient aqueous phase. The present subnanowires are very stable under ambient air and aqueous environments, unlike previously reported metal wires of approximately 1 nanometer diameter, which existed only transiently in ultrahigh vacuum. The wires exist as coherently oriented three-dimensional arrays of ultrahigh density and thus could be used as model systems for investigating one-dimensional phenomena and as nanoconnectors for designing nanoelectronic devices.

Abstract
Many polysaccharides isolated from plants are considered to be biological response modifiers and have been shown to enhance various immune responses in vivo and in vitro. Here, we demonstrate that polysaccharide isolated from the radix of Platycodon grandiflorum (PG) has a unique mode of immunostimulation with regard to its cell-type specificity. PG was found to markedly increase polyclonal IgM antibody production and the proliferation of B cells, and to activate iNOS transcription and NO production in macrophages. Moreover, the intraperitoneal administration of PG in mice resulted in increased IgM antibody production in B cells, which were immunized by using T-dependent antigen sheep red blood cells (sRBCs). However, PG did not affect the proliferation of T cells, the IL-2 expression of Th1 cells, or the IL-4 expression of Th2 cells. Although PG and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) had a similar mode of action in B cells and macrophages, they were differentiated by the fact that PG-induced cellular activation was not inhibited by polymyxin B, a specific inhibitor of LPS. Anti-CD19 or anti-CD79b antibody blocked B cell proliferation and anti-CD14 or anti-CD 11b antibody decreased macrophage NO production, indicating the possible cellular binding sites of PG. Our results demonstrate that PG is a specific activator of B cells and macrophages but not of T cells, and suggest that PG is quite distinct from other well-known immunostimulants, such as lentinan and schizophyllan, which mainly act upon macrophages and T cells.

Abstract
There is presently significant interest in cellular responses to physical forces, and numerous devices have been developed to apply stretch to cultured cells. Many of the early devices were limited by the heterogeneity of deformation of cells in different locations and by the high degree of anisotropy at a particular location. We have therefore developed a system to impose cyclic, large-strain, homogeneous stretch on a multiwell surface-treated silicone elastomer substrate plated with pulmonary epithelial cells. The pneumatically driven mechanism consists of four plates each with a clamp to fix one edge of the cruciform elastomer substrate. Four linear bearings set at predetermined angles between the plates ensure a constant ratio of principal strains throughout the stretch cycle. We present the design of the device and membrane shape, the surface modifications of the membrane to promote cell adhesion, predicted and experimental measurements of the strain field, and new data using cultured airway epithelial cells. We present for the first time the relationship between the magnitude of cyclic mechanical strain and the extent of wound closure and cell spreading.

Abstract
We evaluated the efficacy of beta-radiation therapy ((188)Re-MAG(3)) to inhibit intimal hyperplasia (IH) in diffuse in-stent restenosis by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) analysis in 50 patients. Nine patients who did not agree with radiation therapy, and therefore underwent rotational atherectomy and balloon angioplasty for diffuse in-stent restenosis in the same study period, were selected for control groups. Serial IVUS comparisons were available in 44 of 50 patients with radiation therapy and 7 of 9 control patients. At 6-month follow-up, there was less significant increase of IH area in patients with radiation therapy than in control patients (Delta IH area = 0.1 +/- 0.8 mm(2) vs. 2.6 +/- 1.8 mm(2), P > 0.001 in mean values, and 0.6 +/- 1.4 mm(2) vs. 2.9 +/- 2.1 mm(2), P = 0.026 in values of follow-up lesion site, respectively). In conclusion, beta-radiation therapy might be an effective treatment modality to inhibit intimal hyperplasia in patients with diffuse in-stent restenosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to evaluate: 1) the long-term outcomes of 127 selected patients receiving unprotected left main coronary artery (LMCA) stenting; and 2) the impact of the debulking procedure before stenting and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) guidance on their clinical outcomes. BACKGROUND The long-term safety of stenting of unprotected LMCA stenoses has not been established yet. METHODS A total of 127 consecutive patients with unprotected LMCA stenosis and normal left ventricular function were treated by elective stenting. The long-term outcomes were evaluated between two groups: IVUS guidance (n = 77) vs. angiographic guidance (n = 50); and debulking plus stenting (debulking/stenting; n = 40) vs. stenting only (n = 87). RESULTS Angiographic restenosis was documented in 19 (19%) of 100 patients. The lumen diameter after stenting was significantly larger in IVUS-guided group (p = 0.003). The angiographic restenosis rate was significantly lower in the debulking/stenting group (8.3% vs. 25%, p = 0.034). The reference artery size was the only independent predictor of angiographic restenosis. During follow-up (25.5 +/- 16.7 months), there were four deaths, but no nonfatal myocardial infarctions occurred. The survival rate was 97.0 +/- 1.7% at two years. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest that stenting of unprotected LMCA stenosis might be associated with a favorable long-term outcome in selected patients. Guidance with IVUS may optimize the immediate results, and debulking before stenting seems to be effective in reducing the restenosis rate. However, we need a large-scale, randomized study.

Abstract
The prevalence of Behcet's disease is the highest in the East Asian and the Mediterranean countries. Behcet's disease is also distributed in the Asian countries, but the nationwide survey has not been performed in Korea yet. The Korean Study Group for Behcet's Disease, founded in 1999, conducted a multicenter, retrospective survey on epidemiologic and clinical features of the patients with Behcet's disease from 20 hospitals around the nation from 1997 to 1999. Of 3,497 patients, 1,527 were classified into complete or incomplete type of Behcet's disease according to the revised Shimizu's classification. The sex ratio was 1:1.75 with the female predominance. Geographical distribution showed the highest frequency in Seoul (38.5%). Clinically, 98.8% had oral ulcers, 83.2% had genital ulcers, 84.3% had skin lesions and 50.9% had ocular lesions. As for the minor clinical manifestations, articular symptoms were the most frequent. The pathergy test showed positive in 15.4% of patients and revealed a higher positive rate in males (20.2%) than in females (12.7%). In conclusion, we performed the first multicenter study on Behcet's disease in Korea and revealed the female predominance, higher frequency of ocular lesions, and lower positivity of pathergy test in the patients.

Abstract
A retrospective analysis of clinical data of 71 patients with constrictive pericarditis (CP) diagnosed by echo-Doppler technique (mean age, 49+/-17) was done. In 27 patients (38%), the etiology was unknown, and the three most frequent identifiable causes were tuberculosis (23/71, 32%), cardiac surgery (8/71, 11%), and mediastinal irradiation (6/71, 9%). Pericardiectomy was performed in 35 patients (49%) with a surgical mortality of 6% (2/35), and 11 patients (15%, 11/ 71) showed complete resolution of constrictive physiology with medical treatment. Patients with transient CP were characterized by absence of pericardial calcification, shorter symptom duration, and higher incidence of fever, weight loss, and tuberculosis. The 5-yr survival rates of patients with transient CP and those undergoing pericardiectomy were 100% and 85+/-6%, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of patients without undergoing pericardiectomy (33+/-17%, p=0.0083). Mediastinal irradiation, higher functional class, low voltage in ECG, low serum albumin, and old age were the independent variables associated with a higher mortality. Tuberculosis is still the most important etiology of CP in Korea, and not infrequently, it may cause transient CP. Early diagnosis and decision-making using follow-up echocardiography are crucial to improve the prognosis of patients with CP.

Abstract
We present a new method for generating two-dimensional maps of the cerebral cortex. Our computerized, two-stage flattening method takes as its input any well-defined representation of a surface within the three-dimensional cortex. The first stage rapidly converts this surface to a topologically correct two-dimensional map, without regard for the amount of distortion introduced. The second stage reduces distortions using a multiresolution strategy that makes gross shape changes on a coarsely sampled map and further shape refinements on progressively finer resolution maps. We demonstrate the utility of this approach by creating flat maps of the entire cerebral cortex in the macaque monkey and by displaying various types of experimental data on such maps. We also introduce a surface-based coordinate system that has advantages over conventional stereotaxic coordinates and is relevant to studies of cortical organization in humans as well as non-human primates. Together, these methods provide an improved basis for quantitative studies of individual variability in cortical organization.

Abstract
We have mapped the C3H2 2(12)-1(01) transition line toward the Sgr A molecular cloud on a 1' grid spacing and derived C3H2 column densities of 3 approximately 7 x 10(14) cm-2 for molecular clouds of Sgr A. The fractional abundances of C3H2 relative to H2 are obtained to be 3 approximately 6 x 10(-9), which are slightly lower than that for the cold dark cloud TMC-1 but are enhanced by factors of 5-60 compared to those for Sgr B2 and the Orion extended ridge. We also estimate from the C3H2 column densities total masses of approximately 10(6) M(solar) for two clouds (M - 0.13-0.08 and M - 0.02-0.07), which are thought to be close to the virial equilibrium. We suggest that the large abundance of C3H2 in Sgr A may be partly due to the activities of the Galactic center.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was done to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of beta-radiation therapy with a rhenium-188-mercaptoacetyltriglycine ((188)Re-MAG(3))-filled balloon after rotational atherectomy for diffuse in-stent restenosis (ISR). BACKGROUND Rotational atherectomy has been shown to be safe and efficient for the treatment of ISR, but the recurrence rate is still high. Intracoronary beta-irradiation after rotational atherectomy may be a reasonable approach to prevent recurrent ISR. METHODS Fifty consecutive patients with diffuse ISR (length >10 mm) in native coronary arteries underwent rotational atherectomy and adjunctive balloon angioplasty, followed by beta-irradiation using a (188)Re-MAG(3)-filled balloon catheter. The radiation dose was 15 Gy at a depth of 1.0 mm into the vessel wall. RESULTS The mean lengths of the lesion and irradiated segment were 25.6 +/- 12.7 mm and 37.6 +/- 11.2 mm, respectively. Radiation was delivered successfully to all patients, with a mean irradiation time of 201.8 +/- 61.7 s. No adverse event, including myocardial infarction, death or stent thrombosis, occurred during the follow-up period (mean 10.3 +/- 3.7 months), and nontarget vessel revascularization was needed in one patient. The six-month binary angiographic restenosis rate was 10.4%, and the loss index was 0.17 +/- 0.31. CONCLUSIONS Beta-irradiation using a (188)Re-MAG(3)-filled balloon after rotational atherectomy is safe and feasible in patients with diffuse ISR, and it may improve their clinical and angiographic outcomes. Further prospective, randomized trials are warranted to evaluate the synergistic effect of debulking and irradiation in patients with diffuse ISR.

Abstract
Isomer composition of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) was measured for municipal waste incinerator fly ash samples and for emission samples produced from soot and copper-deposit experiments conducted at the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA). Two types of PCN isomer patterns were identified. One pattern contained specific PCN isomers in which chlorine atoms are substituted as if the peri(alpha-) position were dechlorinated from the higher chlorinated PCNs one by one. In another pattern, the isomers had a tendency for the chlorine atoms to assume successive positions on the naphthalene ring, which may be caused by specifically oriented chlorination. Some of these isomers increased, together with several polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDF) and a few polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) isomers. The ratios between some specific PCN, PCDF, and PCDD isomers measured for the fly ash samples agree with those obtained from the soot and copper-deposit experiments. The observations suggest that these isomers were formed possibly from de novo synthesis utilizing the carbon structure contained in soot under the catalytic effect of a copper compound. Typical isomers for PCNs and PCDFs produced from incineration emissions were identified.

Abstract
Terminal QRS complex distortion on admission has an impact on a patient's prognosis after primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We evaluated the determinants and prognostic significance of terminal QRS complex distortion in 153 consecutive patients with AMI after primary angioplasty. The study population was divided into 2 groups according to the presence (group I, n = 41) or absence (group II, n = 112) of terminal QRS complex distortion. The primary end points were the occurrence, within 6 weeks after AMI, of death, nonfatal reinfarction, or congestive heart failure. Baseline characteristics were similar between the 2 groups. However, patients in group I had higher peak levels of serum creatine kinase than those in group II (5,100 +/- 3,100 vs 3,000 +/- 1,800 U/L, respectively, p <0.01). The rate of angiographic no-reflow (Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction flow grade < or =2) was 31.7% in group I and 10.7% in group II (p <0.01). The predischarge left ventricular ejection fraction was 45.0 +/- 12.0% in group I and 54.0 +/- 8.0% in group II (p <0.01). Multivariate analysis identified the pressure-derived fractional collateral flow index and the culprit lesion in the left anterior descending coronary artery as independent determinants of the terminal QRS complex distortion. No patients died during 6 weeks of follow-up. The 2 groups were similar for life-threatening arrhythmia or reinfarction. However, there were more patients in group I than in group II with congestive heart failure (26.8% vs 5.4%, respectively, p <0.01) or who reached the primary end points (29.3% vs 5.4%, respectively, p <0.01). In conclusion, terminal QRS complex distortion on admission is associated with poor clinical outcome after primary angioplasty for AMI, and collateral flow may have a major influence on terminal QRS complex distortion during AMI.

Abstract
The pathogenic fungus, Botrytis cinerea, causing gray mold disease in a variety of plant species, secretes at least four polygalacturonases (PGs), cell wall degrading enzymes. Among them, we prepared polyclonal antibody against purified 66-kDa exo-PG in rabbit. Immunoblot analysis revealed that the antibody recognized two exo-PGs, 66 kDa and 70 kDa in molecular mass, secreted from B. cinerea cultured in the medium containing citrus pectin as a carbon source. By immunohistochemical analysis, the expression of exo-PGs was identified in cucumber leaves inoculated with spores of B. cinerea. The exo-PGs were observed 9 h after inoculation, and the amount of exo-PGs increased with time in the leaves. The exo-PGs were induced by polygalacturonic acid as well as its monomer, galacturonic acid, in vitro. The expression of 66-kDa exo-PG (exo-PG I) increased with time of culture, while 70-kDa exo-PG (exo-PG II) was transiently expressed soon after the start of culture. Therefore, exo-PGs might play an important role in pathogenesis at an early stage of infection as well as in tissue maceration of host plant.

Abstract
In developing probes for detecting beta-amyloid (Abeta) plaques in the brain of Alzheimer's disease (AD), we have synthesized 1-bromo-2,5-bis-(3-hydroxycarbonyl-4-hydroxy)styrylbenzene (5, BSB). Due to the presence of two double bonds, formation of four different isomers is possible. Four isomers, E,E-5, E,Z-5, Z,E-5, and Z,Z-5, were prepared. Surprisingly, all showed strong fluorescent labeling of Abeta plaques in the brain of postmortem brain sections of patients with confirmed AD. In vitro binding assay also showed that all four isomers of BSB (E,E-5, E,Z-5, Z,E-5, and Z,Z-5) displayed a similar high binding affinity inhibiting the binding of [(125)I]E,E-6, 1-iodo-2,5-bis-(3-hydroxycarbonyl-4-methoxy)styrylbenzene (IMSB) to Abeta(1-40) aggregates. The inhibition constants (K(i)) of E,E-5, E,Z-5, Z,E-5, and Z,Z-5 were 0.11 +/- 0.01, 0.19 +/- 0.03, 0.27 +/- 0.06, and 0.13 +/- 0.02 nM, respectively. Due to the fact that geometric stability of these styrylbenzenes is unknown, and the conversion of Z,Z-5 to E,E-5 may occur automatically in the binding or labeling assaying conditions, we have investigated the kinetics of conversion of Z,Z-5 to E,E-5 by NMR in D(2)O/NaOD at elevated temperatures (70, 95, and 115 degrees C). The activation energy was determined to be 14.15 kcal/mol. The results strongly suggest that the isomeric conversion at room temperature in aqueous buffer solution is unlikely. All of the styrylbenzene isomers clearly showed potential as useful tools for studying Abeta aggregates in the brain. The data suggest that, despite the rigidity of this series of styrylbenzenes, the binding sites on Abeta aggregates may have certain flexibility and the binding pockets could be adaptable for binding to other smaller ligands. Such information could be exploited to develop new ligands for detecting amyloid plaques in AD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pancreatoblastoma is a rare tumour of childhood. Reports of the imaging appearances are limited. OBJECTIVE To define the imaging features of pancreatoblastoma by analysis of four previously unreported cases and review of the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS Findings at CT (n = 4), US (n = 3) and MRI (n = 2) were retrospectively reviewed in four patients with pancreatoblastoma. A Medline search was performed to identify relevant literature. RESULTS Pancreatoblastoma arises most frequently in the body and/or tail, or involves the entire pancreas. Ultrasonography, CT and MRI show variable imaging features, but should in most cases permit preoperative distinction of pancreatoblastoma from other tumours that occur in this region in infancy and childhood. Detection of metastases in the liver, lymph nodes and peritoneal cavity is not significantly better with any one of these three modalities. CONCLUSION Preoperative imaging with US, CT and/or MRI will usually suggest a correct diagnosis of pancreatoblastoma. Contrary to previous reports, the tumour arises in the pancreatic head in a minority of cases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cerebral metabolic abnormalities were proposed as a potential marker of disease severity in congestive heart failure (CHF), but their prognostic significance remains uncertain. METHODS AND RESULTS We investigated the prognostic value of cerebral metabolic abnormalities in 130 consecutive patients with advanced CHF (100 men aged 42.6+/-11.9 years; left ventricular ejection fraction, 22.2+/-6.2%). Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy data were obtained from localized regions ( approximately 8 mL) of the occipital gray matter and the parietal white matter. The primary end point was the occurrence of death after the proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. During follow-up (18.5+/-14.4 months), 21 patients died and 15 underwent urgent heart transplantation. In the Cox proportional model, occipital metabolites (N-acetylaspartate, creatine, choline, and myoinositol), parietal N-acetylaspartate level, and the duration of CHF symptoms (>12 months) were validated as univariate predictors of death. In multivariate Cox analyses, however, the occipital N-acetylaspartate level was an independent predictor of death (hazard ratio, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.41 to 0.67; P<0.001). An analysis with respect to the combined end point of death or urgent transplantation showed similar results. The best cutoff value (9.0 mmol/kg) for occipital N-acetylaspartate level had 75% sensitivity and 67% specificity to predict mortality. CONCLUSIONS The occipital N-acetylaspartate level is a powerful and independent predictor of CHF mortality, suggesting that cerebral metabolic abnormalities may be used as a new prognostic marker in the assessment of patients with CHF.

Abstract
Using subpicosecond optical pump-probe techniques, coherent zone-folded longitudinal acoustic phonons (ZFLAPs) were investigated in an InGaN multiple quantum well structure. A two-pump differential transmission technique was used to generate and control coherent ZFLAP oscillations through the relative timing and amplitude of the two pump pulses. Enhancement and suppression of ZFLAP oscillations were demonstrated, including complete cancellation of generated acoustic phonons for the first time in any material system. Coherent control was used to demonstrate that ZFLAPs are generated differently in InGaN multiple quantum wells than in GaAs/AlAs superlattices.

Abstract
To identify novel peptides that inhibit the interaction between human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) envelope glycoprotein gp120 and CD4, we constructed a targeted phage-displayed peptide library in which phenylalanine and proline were fixed at the fourth and sixth positions, respectively, because Phe43 and the adjacent beta-turn of CD4 are critical for interaction with gp120. Two synthetic peptides were selected after three rounds of biopanning against gp120, and one of them, G1 peptide (ARQPSFDLQCGF), exhibited specific inhibition of the interaction between gp120 and CD4 with an IC(50) of about 50 microM. Structural analysis using NMR demonstrated that G1 peptide forms a compact cyclic structure similar to the CD4 region interacting with gp120. Two derivatives of G1 peptide, a linear hexameric peptide (G1-6) and a cyclic nonameric peptide (G1-c), were synthesized based on the structure of the G1 peptide. Interestingly, they showed higher inhibitory activities than did G1 peptide with IC(50)'s of 6 and 1 microM, respectively. Thus, this study might provide a new insight into the development of anti-HIV-1 inhibitors.

Six-month angiographic follow-up after intravascular ultrasound-guided stenting of infarct-related artery: comparison with non-infarct-related artery. Am Heart J 2001; 141:832-6. Abstract
BACKGROUND Compared with balloon angioplasty, stenting has been established as an effective treatment modality to reduce restenosis in patients with acute myocardial infarction. However, the immediate results that predict favorable long-term outcomes in the acute infarct stenting are unknown. Therefore, we evaluated long-term outcomes of stenting for infarct-related artery (IRA) lesions by using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) compared with that of stenting for non-IRA lesions. METHODS IVUS-guided coronary stenting was successfully performed in 510 native coronary lesions (105 IRA vs 405 non-IRA). A 6-month follow-up angiogram was performed in 419 (82.2%) lesions: 87 (82.9%) IRA lesions and 332 (82.0%) non-IRA lesions. Coronary stenting on the IRA lesions was successfully performed within 7 to 10 days after onset of infarction in 42 patients and within 12 hours in 45 patients. Results were evaluated by clinical, angiographic, and IVUS methods. RESULTS There were no significant differences in clinical and angiographic variables between the two groups. IVUS variables including reference vessel area and minimal stent area were also similar between the two groups. There was no significant difference in angiographic restenosis rate between the two groups in cases of minimal stent area > or = 7 mm(2): 12.8% (6 of 47) in IRA versus 19.1% (33 of 173) in non-IRA lesions (P = .315). However, the angiographic restenosis rate in cases of minimal stent area <7 mm(2) was 50% (20 of 40) in IRA lesions versus 31.5% (50 of 159) in non-IRA lesions (P = .028). CONCLUSIONS Angiographic restenosis is significantly higher in stenting for IRA lesions compared with that for non-IRA lesions in cases of minimal stent area < 7 mm(2).

Abstract
This study was conducted to develop a heating process for coating crystalline goethite on the sand surface to utilize the adsorbent properties of the coating. Goethite-coated sand was investigated for adsorbing cadmium and lead ions from water by batch and column experiments. Chemical analysis (energy dispersive analysis of X-ray, EDAX) was used for characterizing the cadmium and lead adsorption sites on goethite-coated sand. From the results of the batch experiments, the cadmium and lead ions could be adsorbed effectively on the goethite-coated sand. Maximum adsorption capacity values for cadmium and lead were 319, 704 micrograms-Cd/g-sand and 702, 1241 micrograms-Pb/g-sand at pH = 5.0, pH = 6.0, respectively. The interaction between cadmium, lead ions and goethite on sand surface was primarily to cause the chemical bonding. Results from column experiments indicated that the cadmium and lead ions could be removed higher than 95% before 110, 130 and 66, 85 numbers of pore volume of influent were treated at pH = 5.0 and pH = 6.0, respectively.

Abstract
Spontaneous recanalization (SR) occurs after the onset of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), but its clinical significance in the reperfusion era remains uncertain. We evaluated the determinants and prognostic significance of SR in 196 consecutive patients with AMI who underwent primary angioplasty at our institution. The study population was divided into 2 groups according to the presence (group I, n = 44) or absence (group II, n = 152) of SR (Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction [TIMI] anterograde > or = 2 flow on the preintervention angiogram). The primary end point was the occurrence, within 6-weeks after AMI, of death, nonfatal reinfarction, and congestive heart failure. Baseline characteristics were similar between the 2 groups. Peak levels of creatine kinase were lower in group I than in group II (2,500 +/- 1,800 vs 4,000 +/- 2,900 U/L, respectively, p < 0.05). The rate of TIMI flow grade 3 after intervention was higher in group I than in group II (93.2% vs 79.6%, respectively, p < 0.05), and patients in group I had a faster corrected TIMI frame count than those in group II (22.7 +/- 12.4 vs 30.3 +/- 22.8, respectively, p < 0.05). Preinfarction angina (odds ratio [OR] 2.18, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.10 to 4.33, p < 0.05), heavy thrombi (OR 0.10, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.74, p < 0.05), and good angiographic collaterals (OR 0.12, 95% CI 0.02 to 0.89, p < 0.05) were independent predictors of SR. Death, reinfarction, and severe arrhythmia were not different between the 2 groups. However, heart failure occurred more frequently in group II than in group I (15.1% vs 2.3%, respectively, p < 0.05). The primary end point was also significantly lower in group I than in group II (4.5% vs 18.4%, respectively, p < 0.05). In conclusion, SR in AMI is associated with faster coronary flow, smaller infarct size, and a better clinical outcome after primary angioplasty.

Abstract
Articular cartilage injuries are commonly encountered problems in sports medicine and orthopaedics. The treatment of chondral and osteochondral lesions, which possess only a very limited potential for healing, still represents a great challenge to clinicians and to scientists. Experimental investigations reported over the last 20 years have shown that a variety of methods, including implantation of periosteum, perichondrium, artificial matrices, growth factors, and transplanted cells, can stimulate formation of new cartilage. Genetic engineering--a combination of gene transfer techniques and tissue engineering--will facilitate new approaches to the treatment of articular cartilage injuries.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to monitor dynamic changes in energy-related metabolites in the cortex of gerbils subjected to cerebral ischemia by a dual probe microdialysis technique. Focal cerebral ischemia was produced in anesthetized gerbils by occlusion of the right common carotid artery and the right middle cerebral artery for 60 min. Two microdialysis probes were inserted into both sides of the cortex to simultaneously monitor extracellular glucose, lactate, pyruvate and glutamate. Dynamic and comparative changes in these analytes, on the ipsilateral and contralateral sides of the brain, were simultaneously monitored by liquid chromatography and a microdialysis analyzer. The present study demonstrated decreases in glucose and pyruvate, increases in lactate and glutamate on the ipsilateral side whereas all analytes remain constant on the contralateral side of cortex during cerebral ischemia. In vitro recovery of each microdialysis probe was performed to ensure the quality of experiments. The detection limits of pyruvate, glutamate, lactate and glucose were 0.2, 1.0, 2.0 and 20 microM, respectively. The intra- and inter-assay correlations were less than 5% in standard mixtures and pooled brain dialysates.
