Abstract
We present results of a search for R-parity-violating decay of the neutralino chi;01, taken as the lightest supersymmetric particle, to a muon and two jets. The decay proceeds through a lepton-number violating coupling lambda(')(2jk) (j=1,2; k=1,2,3), with R-parity conservation in all other production and decay processes. In the absence of candidate events from 77.5+/-3.9 pb(-1) of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.8 TeV, and with an expected background of 0.18+/-0.03+/-0.02 events, we set limits on squark and gluino masses within the framework of the minimal low-energy supergravity-supersymmetry model.

Preload-adjusted maximal power: a novel index of left ventricular contractility in atrial fibrillation. Heart 2002; 88:170-6. [PMID: 12117848 PMCID: PMC1767221 DOI: 10.1136/heart.88.2.170] [Citation(s) in RCA: 12] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/04/2022] Open
Abstract
BACKGROUND Left ventricular contractility in atrial fibrillation is known to change in a beat to beat fashion, but there is no gold standard for contractility indices in atrial fibrillation, especially those measured non-invasively. OBJECTIVE To determine whether the non-invasive index of contractility "preload-adjusted PWR(max)" (maximal ventricular power divided by the square of end diastolic volume) can accurately measure left ventricular contractility in a beat to beat fashion in atrial fibrillation. METHODS Atrial fibrillation was induced experimentally using 60 Hz stimulation of the atrium and maintained in 12 sheep; four received diltiazem, four digoxin, and four no drugs (control). Aortic flow, left ventricular volume, and left ventricular pressure were monitored simultaneously. Preload-adjusted PWR(max), the slope of the end systolic pressure-volume relation (E(max)), and the maximum rate of change of left ventricular pressure (dP/dt(max)) were calculated in a beat to beat fashion. RESULTS Preload-adjusted PWR(max) correlated linearly with load independent E(max) (p < 0.0001) and curvilinearly with load dependent dP/dt(max) (p < 0.0001), which suggested the load independence of preload-adjusted PWR(max). After five minutes of diltiazem administration, preload-adjusted PWR(max), dP/dt(max), and E(max) fell significantly (p < 0.0001) to 62%, 64%, and 61% of baseline, respectively. Changes were not significant after five minutes of digoxin (103%, 98%, and 102%) or in controls (97%, 96%, and 95%). CONCLUSIONS Preload-adjusted PWR(max) correlates linearly with E(max) and is a useful measure of contractility even in atrial fibrillation. Non-invasive application of this method, in combination with echocardiography and tonometry, may yield important information for optimising the treatment of patients with atrial fibrillation.

Abstract
We present the results of a search for leptoquark (LQ) pairs in (85.2+/-3.7) pb(-1) of pp* collider data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. We observe no evidence for leptoquark production and set a limit on sigma(pp*-->LQLQ-->nunu+jets) as a function of the mass of the leptoquark (m(LQ)). Assuming the decay LQ-->nuq, we exclude scalar leptoquarks for m(LQ) < 98 GeV/c(2), and vector leptoquarks for m(LQ) < 200 GeV/c(2) and coupling which produces the minimum cross section, at a 95% confidence level.

Abstract
We have performed a search for scalar top quark (stop) pair production in the inclusive electron-muon-missing transverse energy final state, using a sample of pp events corresponding to 108.3 pb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab. The search is done in the framework of the minimal supersymmetric standard model assuming that the sneutrino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. For the dominant decays of the lightest stop, t-->b chi+1 and t-->blnu, no evidence for signal is found. We derive cross-section limits as a function of stop ( t ), chargino ( chi+1), and sneutrino ( nu) masses.

Abstract
We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in decays of pair-produced top quarks in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV recorded by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. With no evidence for signal, we exclude most regions of the ( M(H+/-),tan(beta)) parameter space where the decay t--> H(+)b has a branching fraction >0.36 and B(H+/--->tau(nu)(tau)) is large.

Abstract
The inclusive cross section for production of isolated photons has been measured in pp macro collisions at square root of s = 630 GeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The photons span a transverse energy (E(T)) range from 7-49 GeV and have pseudorapidity absolute value of eta < 2.5. This measurement is combined with the previous D0 result at square root of s = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of the cross sections. Comparison of next-to-leading-order QCD with the measured cross section at 630 GeV and the ratio of cross sections show satisfactory agreement in most of the E(T) range.

Abstract
We describe QUAERO, a method that (i) enables the automatic optimization of searches for physics beyond the standard model, and (ii) provides a mechanism for making high energy collider data generally available. We apply QUAERO to searches for standard model WW, ZZ, and t t macro production, to searches for these objects produced through a new heavy resonance, and to the first direct search for W'-->WZ. Through this interface, we make three data sets collected by the D0 experiment at square root of [s] = 1.8 TeV publicly available.

Empirical pulmonary vein isolation in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation using a three-dimensional nonfluoroscopic mapping system: long-term follow-up. Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility and long-term results of empirical isolation of both superior pulmonary veins in patients with chronic AF. Although localizing and ablating the focal triggers of AF has been proven an effective approach, this strategy is time consuming, often requires multiple procedures, and carries the risk of pulmonary vein stenosis. Whether ostial electrical isolation of the superior pulmonary veins, without initial detailed mapping, is a more efficient approach is not known. The study included 71 consecutive patients who had chronic AF. Using a nonfluoroscopic electroanatomic mapping system, the left and right superior pulmonary veins were ablated circumferentially at the venoatrial junction, with the aim of achieving electrical isolation of the veins. Following ablation, if frequent atrial ectopies were present, mapping and ablation were considered. The patients were periodically followed with 48-hour Holter and loop recorder monitoring. After the ablation of the right and left superior pulmonary veins 59 (83%) of 71 patients maintained sinus rhythm without premature atrial beats. The remaining 12 patients underwent further mapping and ablation including 5 patients who required isolation of the left inferior pulmonary veins. True electrical isolation could be achieved only in 45 (31%) of the 147 targeted veins. At the latest follow-up (mean 29 +/- 8 months), 80% of the patients with upper vein isolation remained in sinus rhythm off medications, 62% of the patients maintained sinus rhythm on previously ineffective medications, and 17% continued to be in AF. Fourteen (20%) patients developed intermittent episodes of left atrial flutter, and mapping in these patients revealed large electrically silent areas in the left atrium. Empirical isolation of pulmonary veins appeared to be an effective approach to help maintain sinus rhythm in patients with chronic AF. True electrical isolation of the pulmonary veins was associated with a higher likelihood of long-term success. Left atrial flutter was seen in a significant number of patients at long-term follow-up.

Abstract
Recent clinical trials aimed at attenuating complications in diabetes mellitus have generated interest in the impact of drug formulation and altered pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in diabetes. Specifically, it has been proposed that the diabetic state may alter the pharmacokinetics of several cardiovascular drugs, including some calcium antagonists. The present study investigates the effects of diabetes mellitus on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of amlodipine in hypertensive subjects with and without diabetes mellitus to determine whether the diabetic state alters these parameters. This trial consisted of a 2-week placebo washout phase, a 2-week titration phase, and a 2-week maintenance phase. Study patients included 18 hypertensive patients with type II diabetes mellitus and 10 nondiabetic hypertensive patients. Blood samples were collected after administration of amlodipine and AUC, Cmax, and tmax were determined. The acute 24-hour pharmacodynamic response to amlodipine was assessed by blood pressure and telemetric heart rate measurements. There were no significant differences for either amlodipine 5 or 10 mg in AUC (p = 0.40 for 5 mg; p = 0.59 for 10 mg), Cmax (p = 0.41 for 5 mg; p = 0.45 for 10 mg), and tmax (p = 0.79 for 5 mg; p = 0.67 for 10 mg) between diabetic and nondiabetic hypertensive subjects. Similarly, the 24-hour pharmacodynamic effects of amlodipine on systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart rate did not differ between diabetic and nondiabetic subjects as assessed by repeated-measures analysis of variance. Because of the theoretical basis for anticipating that diabetes mellitus may provoke important pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic alterations, our study provides an important database in clearly demonstrating that the diabetic milieu did not alter the pharmacokinetics or pharmacodynamics of amlodipine.

Abstract
The key genetic component of methicillin resistance, the mecA determinant, is not native to Staphylococcus aureus. Thus, the evolution of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) must have begun with the acquisition of the mecA determinant from an unknown heterologous source some time before the first reported appearance of MRSA isolates in clinical specimens in the U.K. and Denmark (in the early 1960s). We compared the genetic backgrounds and phenotypes of a group of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) isolates to the properties of MRSA strains isolated in Denmark and the U.K. during the same time period, and also to the genetic profiles of contemporary epidemic clones of MRSA. All early MRSA isolates resembled a large group of the early MSSA blood isolates in phenotypic and genetic properties, including phage group, antibiotype (resistance to penicillin, streptomycin, and tetracycline), pulsed-field gel electrophoresis pattern, and spaA type and multilocus sequence type, strongly suggesting that the early MSSA examined here represented the progeny of a strain that served as one of the first S. aureus recipients of the methicillin-resistance determinant in Europe. The genetic background of this group of early MSSA isolates was also very similar to that of the widely disseminated contemporary "Iberian clone" of MRSA, suggesting that genetic determinants present in early MSSA and essential for some aspects of the epidemicity and/or virulence of these strains may have been retained by this highly successful contemporary MRSA lineage.

Abstract
We present results of searches for technirho (rho(T)), techniomega (omega(T)), and Z' particles, using the decay channels rho(T),omega(T),Z'-->e(+)e(-). The search is based on 124.8 pb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron during 1992-1996. In the absence of a signal, we set 95% C.L. upper limits on the cross sections for the processes pp-->rho(T),omega(T),Z'-->e(+)e(-) as a function of the mass of the decaying particle. For certain model parameters, we exclude the existence of degenerate rho(T) and omega(T) states with masses below about 200 GeV. We exclude a Z' with mass below 670 GeV, assuming that it has the same couplings to fermions as the Z boson.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Competition for placental amino acid transporters can affect the fetal supply of amino acids. Specifically, the branched-chain amino acids-isoleucine, leucine, and valine-may inhibit the transfer of other amino acids. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of branched-chain amino acids on the umbilical uptake of amino acids. STUDY DESIGN Six late-gestation ewes were infused sequentially for 2 hours with 3 different mixtures of amino acids: (1) one that was comparable to commercial parenteral nutrition preparations, (2) the same solution without branched-chain amino acids, and (3) branched-chain amino acids alone. Maternal and fetal blood samples were collected simultaneously for the determination of uterine and umbilical uptake values of amino acids, and for concentrations of arterial insulin, glucagon, glucose, and lactate before (control) and during (experimental) infusion. RESULTS Umbilical uptake of branched-chain amino acids increased significantly when they were present in the infusates. The fetal uptake of several other amino acids could be increased by increasing their maternal concentrations. Inhibition of umbilical uptake by branched-chain amino acids could be shown for threonine and methionine. The infusion of branched-chain amino acids alone did not affect maternal and fetal insulin or glucagon concentrations. CONCLUSIONS In late-gestation sheep, an increase in maternal plasma concentration of branched-chain amino acids led to increased branched-chain amino acid umbilical uptake, but branched-chain amino acids can also inhibit the transport of some amino acids to the fetus. Changes in fetal plasma concentration and uptake of branched-chain amino acid appear to have no significant effect on fetal insulin or glucagon.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize the response of articular chondrocytes to a specific cryoinjury that leads to cluster formation following long-term transplantation. DESIGN Osteochondral dowels from 20 adult sheep were cryopreserved to optimize the recovery of chondrocytes immediately after thawing. The dowels were transplanted as allografts and observed at 3 and 12 months. Chondrocyte distribution and viability was assessed using paravital dyes after transplantation. Chondrocyte phenotype was assessed by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry to detect type II collagen. An anticentrosome antibody was used to identify cells undergoing cell cycle progression towards mitosis. RESULTS All cryopreserved grafts showed the presence of spheroidal clusters of chondrocytes 1 year after transplantation while the host cartilage adjacent to the graft appeared morphologically normal. The average size of the clusters increased from four cells at 3 months to 12 cells at 1 year. The chondrocytes in the clusters displayed newly formed type II collagen protein and mRNA. Some cells within clusters were observed with two centrosomes, indicative of cells progressing through the S phase of the cell cycle. CONCLUSION Adult articular chondrocytes retain the ability to repopulate the matrix, an ability which is demonstrated with this specific cryoinjury. This may be an initial stage of cartilage regeneration.

Abstract
We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy ("Sleuth") to search for new high p(T) physics in approximately 100 pb(-1) of pp collisions at square root of (s) = 1.8 TeV collected by the D0 experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. We systematically analyze many exclusive final states and demonstrate sensitivity to a variety of models predicting new phenomena at the electroweak scale. No evidence of new high p(T) physics is observed.

Abstract
A previous surveillance study conducted in 12 hospitals in New York City in 1996 identified a unique multidrug-resistant genetic lineage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) that was widespread and accounted for as much as 42% of all the MRSA isolates. The purpose of the study described here was to determine possible geographic spread of this New York clone of MRSA to neighboring states. Single-patient MRSA isolates (258) from 29 health care facilities in Connecticut (CT), New Jersey (NJ), and Pennsylvania (PA) were collected during the calendar year 1998. DNA typing, consisting of fingerprinting of chromosomal macrorestriction patterns generated by SmaI digestion followed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), identified 22 patterns. PFGE type A, closely related to the PFGE type of the previously identified New York clone, accounted for 154 (60%) of 258 isolates. The clone was detected in all facilities, was predominant in 19 of the 29 health care centers, and accounted for 92% of the MRSA isolates collected in PA. The overwhelming majority of MRSA with PFGE type A was also resistant to erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, and clindamycin. One of the two most common PFGE subtypes detected in the three states sampled (PFGE subtype A1) had an identical PFGE pattern to that of the previously described vancomycin-resistant strain of S. aureus (VISA) recently detected in a hospital in Westchester, NY. The second most frequent MRSA clone with PFGE type E and accounting for 26% (68/258 isolates), also described earlier in the 12 New York City hospitals, was resistant not only to erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, and clindamycin, but also to gentamicin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim as well. The unique multidrug resistance pattern of this second clone and its geographic distribution accounted for the differences observed in the frequency of multidrug resistance among MRSA isolates recovered in the three states. The pandemic Iberian clone recently detected in New York City was not detected among the 258 MRSA isolates recovered in CT, NJ, and PA.

Abstract
Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) has become the gold standard of molecular methods in epidemiological investigations. In spite of its high resolving power, use of the method has been hampered by inadequate laboratory-to-laboratory reproducibility. In the project described here we have addressed this problem by organizing a multilaboratory effort in which the same bacterial strains (subtype variants of the Iberian and Brazilian methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus--MRSA--clones) were analyzed by twenty investigators in thirteen different laboratories according to an indentical protocol, which is reproduced here in detail. PFGE patterns obtained were analyzed at a central laboratory in order to identify specific technical problems that produced substandard macrorestriction patterns. The results including the specific technical problems and their most likely causes are described in this communication. Also listed are seven major epidemic clones of MRSA which have been characterized by molecular fingerprinting techniques and the prototypes of which have been deposited at the American Type Culture Collection, from where they will be available for interested investigators for the purpose of typing MRSA isolates. It is hoped that this communication will contribute to the improvement of the reproducibility and technical/aesthetic quality of PFGE analysis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe a normal heart left bundle branch block, inferior axis ventricular tachycardia (VT), that could not be ablated from the right or left ventricular outflow tracts. BACKGROUND Whether these VTs are epicardial and can be identified by a specific electrocardiographic pattern is unclear. METHODS Twelve patients with normal heart left bundle branch block, inferior axis VT and previously failed ablation were included in this study. Together with mapping in the right and left ventricular outflow tracts, we obtained percutaneous epicardial mapping in the first five patients and performed aortic sinus of Valsalva mapping in all patients. RESULTS No adequate pace mapping was observed in the right and left ventricular outflow tracts. Earliest ventricular activation was noted in the epicardium and the aortic cusps. All patients were successfully ablated from the aortic sinuses of Valsalva (95% CI 0% to 18%). The electrocardiographic pattern associated with this VT was left bundle branch block, inferior axis and early precordial transition with Rs or R in V2 or V3. Ventricular tachycardia from the left sinus had rS pattern in lead I, and VT from the noncoronary sinus had a notched R wave in lead I. None of the patients had complications and all remained arrhythmia-free at a mean follow-up of 8 +/- 2.6 months. The alterations of N-Methyl-D-aspartate receptor expressions and oxidative DNA damage in the CA1 area at the early time after ischemia-reperfusion insult. Neurosci Lett 2001; 301:139-42. Abstract
Delayed neuronal death in the CA1 of the hippocampus following global ischemia has been evoked by both the activation of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NR) and the generate reactive oxygen species in the neurons. In the present study, we investigated whether oxidative DNA damages may be correlated with NR subunits (NR1 and NR2A/B) expression following ischemia insults in vivo. Thirty minutes after ischemia-reperfusion, the intensities of both NR and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) immunoreactivities were markedly increased in neurons of CA1. However, NR2A/B and 8-OHdG immunoreactivities were enhanced in CA1 over 24 h after ischemia although NR1 immunoreactivity was decreased. These results suggest that oxidative stress and excitotoxicity in the CA1 may simultaneously trigger neuronal damages at early time after ischemia, and free radical damage including oxidative DNA damage may eventually promote the delayed neuronal death in this region.

Abstract
The D0 Collaboration has measured the inclusive jet cross section in barpp collisions at square root of s = 630 GeV. The results for pseudorapidities (eta)<0.5 are combined with our previous results at square root of s = 1800 GeV to form a ratio of cross sections with smaller uncertainties than either individual measurement. Next-to-leading-order QCD predictions show excellent agreement with the measurement at 630 GeV; agreement is also satisfactory for the ratio. Specifically, despite a 10% to 15% difference in the absolute magnitude, the dependence of the ratio on jet transverse momentum is very similar for data and theory.

Abstract
We report on a study of the ratio of inclusive three-jet to inclusive two-jet production cross sections as a function of total transverse energy in p&pmacr; collisions at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s] = 1.8 TeV, using data collected with the D0 detector during the 1992-1993 run of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The measurements are used to deduce preferred renormalization scales in perturbative O(alpha(3)(s)) QCD calculations in modeling soft-jet emission.

Abstract
We report a new measurement of the pseudorapidity (eta) and transverse-energy ( E(T)) dependence of the inclusive jet production cross section in pp(macro) collisions at square root of s = 1.8 TeV using 95 pb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The differential cross section d(2)sigma/(dE(T)d eta) is presented up to eta = 3, significantly extending previous measurements. The results are in good overall agreement with next-to-leading order predictions from QCD and indicate a preference for certain parton distribution functions.

Abstract
We report a search for effects of large extra spatial dimensions in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.8 TeV with the D0 detector, using events containing a pair of electrons or photons. The data are in good agreement with the expected background and do not exhibit evidence for large extra dimensions. We set the most restrictive lower limits to date, at the 95% C.L. on the effective Planck scale between 1.0 and 1.4 TeV for several formalisms and numbers of extra dimensions.

Abstract
The uptake and/or release of amino acids across the fetal liver and the placenta were studied in 8 pregnant sheep during the 5 days preceding delivery of the lamb. During spontaneous parturition, there was a significant decrease in fetal hepatic glutamine uptake, in fetal hepatic glutamate release and in placental glutamate uptake. The fetal plasma concentrations of glutamate, leucine, isoleucine, valine, phenylalanine, serine and tyrosine also decreased significantly in the 5 days preceding delivery. There was no significant net output of glucose from the fetal liver nor any change in net lactate uptake by the liver. During this same time period there was a significant increase in the fetal plasma cortisol concentration and a decrease in progesterone output by the pregnant uterus. The results are compared to the previously reported amino acid changes during dexamethasone-induced parturition.
