Li Plating Regulation on Fast-Charging Graphite Anodes by a Triglyme-LiNO3 Synergistic Electrolyte Additive

Graphite anodes are prone to dangerous Li plating during fast charging, but the difficulty to identify the rate-limiting step has made a challenging to eliminate Li plating thoroughly. Thus, the inherent thinking on inhibiting Li plating needs to be compromised. Herein, an elastic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with uniform Li-ion flux is constructed on graphite anode by introducing a triglyme (G3)-LiNO3 synergistic additive (GLN) to commercial carbonate electrolyte, for realizing a dendrite-free and highly-reversible Li plating under high rates. The cross-linked oligomeric ether and Li3 N particles derived from the GLN greatly improve the stability of the SEI before and after Li plating and facilitate the uniform Li deposition. When 51 % of lithiation capacity is contributed from Li plating, the graphite anode in the electrolyte with 5 vol.% GLN achieved an average 99.6 % Li plating reversibility over 100 cycles. In addition, the 1.2-Ah LiFePO4 | graphite pouch cell with GLN-added electrolyte stably operated over 150 cycles at 3 C, firmly demonstrating the promise of GLN in commercial Li-ion batteries for fast-charging applications.

Toughening of Ni-Mn-Based Polycrystalline Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys

Solid-state refrigeration technology is expected to replace conventional gas compression refrigeration technology because it is environmentally friendly and highly efficient. Among various solid-state magnetocaloric materials, Ni-Mn-based ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (SMAs) have attracted widespread attention due to their multifunctional properties, such as their magnetocaloric effect, elastocaloric effect, barocaloric effect, magnetoresistance, magnetic field-induced strain, etc. Recently, a series of in-depth studies on the thermal effects of Ni-Mn-based magnetic SMAs have been carried out, and numerous research results have been obtained. It has been found that poor toughness and cyclic stability greatly limit the practical application of magnetic SMAs in solid-state refrigeration. In this review, the influences of element doping, microstructure design, and the size effect on the strength and toughness of Ni-Mn-based ferromagnetic SMAs and their underlying mechanisms are systematically summarized. The pros and cons of different methods in enhancing the toughness of Ni-Mn-based SMAs are compared, and the unresolved issues are analyzed. The main research directions of Ni-Mn-based ferromagnetic SMAs are proposed and discussed, which are of scientific and technological significance and could promote the application of Ni-Mn-based ferromagnetic SMAs in various fields.

Effect of temperature on the dynamic parameters of silty clay in a seasonally frozen region

The effect of temperature on the dynamic parameters of silty clay in a seasonally frozen region was assessed using a GDS dynamic triaxial test system. The strength parameters, dynamic elastic modulus, damping ratio, and other dynamic parameters of the soil samples were analyzed under different temperature conditions. The results demonstrated that the shear strength parameters (internal friction angle and cohesion) of the silty clay under a dynamic load increased significantly with decreasing temperature, and the internal friction angle increased sharply below 0 °C. The dynamic elastic modulus increased as the temperature decreased and changed significantly in the ice-water phase change region. The slope of the dynamic stress-strain curve of the soil sample increased significantly with decreasing temperature. As the temperature decreased, the damping ratio reduced, and the ability of the soil to absorb seismic waves declines. The research results provide new data and information to guide construction projects in seasonally frozen region.

Difunctional Magnetic Nanoparticles Employed in Immunochromatographic Assay for Rapid and Quantitative Detection of Carcinoembryonic Antigen

Immunochromatographic assay (ICA) plays an important role in in vitro diagnostics because of its simpleness, convenience, fastness, sensitivity, accuracy, and low cost. The employment of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), possessing both excellent optical properties and magnetic separation functions, can effectively promote the performances of ICA. In this study, an ICA based on MNPs (MNP-ICA) has been successfully developed for the sensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). The magnetic probes were prepared by covalently conjugating carboxylated MNPs with the specific monoclonal antibody against CEA, which were not only employed to enrich and extract CEA from serum samples under an external magnetic field but also used as a signal output with its inherent optical property. Under the optimal parameters, the limit of detection (LOD) for qualitative detection with naked eyes was 1.0 ng/mL, and the quantitative detection could be realized with the help of a portable optical reader, indicating that the ratio of optical signal intensity correlated well with CEA concentration ranging from 1.0 ng/mL to 64.0 ng/mL (R2 = 0.9997). Additionally, method comparison demonstrated that the magnetic probes were beneficial for sensitivity improvement due to the matrix effect reduction after magnetic separation, and the MNP-ICA is eight times higher sensitive than ICA based on colloidal gold nanoparticles. The developed MNP-ICA will provide sensitive, convenient, and efficient technical support for biomarkers rapid screening in cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

A Silver Lining of Neuropathic Pain: Predicting Favorable Functional Outcome in Spinal Cord Injury

Background

Neuropathic pain (NP) is a common and severe problem following spinal cord injury (SCI). However, its relationship with functional outcome remains unclear.

Methods

A retrospective explorative analysis was performed on SCI patients admitted to a tertiary academic medical center between January 2018 and June 2022. The candidate predictor variables, including demographics, clinical characteristics and complications, were analyzed with logistic and linear regression. Spinal Cord Independence Measure (SCIM) scores at discharge and mean relative functional gain (mRFG) of SCIM were as outcome parameters.

Results

A total of 140 SCI patients included for the final analysis. Among them, 44 (31.43%) patients were tetraplegics, and 96 (68.57%) patients were paraplegics; 68 (48.57%) patients developed NP, and 72 (51.43%) patients did not. Logistic and linear regression analyses of SCIM at discharge both showed that NP [OR=3.10, 95% CI (1.29,7.45), P=0.01; unstandardized β=11.47, 95% CI (4.95,17.99), P<0.01; respectively] was significantly independent predictors for a favorable outcome (SCIM at discharge ≥ 50, logistic regression results) and higher SCIM total score at discharge (linear regression results). Besides, NP [unstandardized β=15.67, 95% CI (8.94,22.41), P<0.01] was also independently associated with higher mRFG of SCIM scores. Furthermore, the NP group had significantly higher mRFG, SCIM total scores and subscales (self-care, respiration and sphincter management, and mobility) at discharge compared to the non-NP group. However, there were no significant differences in mRFG, SCIM total score or subscales at discharge among the NP subgroups in terms of locations (at level pain, below level pain, and both) or timing of occurrence (within and after one month after SCI). This study also showed that incomplete injury, lumbar-sacral injury level and non-anemia were significantly independent predictors for a favorable outcome, and higher mRFG of SCIM scores (except for non-anemia).

Conclusion

NP appears independently associated with better functional recovery in SCI patients, suggesting the bright side of this undesirable complication. These findings may help to alleviate the psychological burden of NP patients and ultimately restore their confidence in rehabilitation.

Nanomaterial Production from Metallic Vapor Bubble Collapse in Liquid Nitrogen

Nanomaterials with unique structural and properties can be synthesized by rapid transition of the thermodynamic state. One promising method is through electrical explosion, which possesses ultrafast heating/quenching rates (dT/dt~10⁹ K/s) of the exploding conductor. In this study, experiments were performed with fine metallic wire exploding in liquid nitrogen (liq N2, 77 K) under different applied voltages. For the first time in the literature, the physical image of the electrical explosion dynamics in liq N2 is depicted using electro-physical diagnostics and spatial-temporal-resolved photography. Specifically, the pulsation and collapse processes of the vapor bubble (explosion products) have been carefully observed and analyzed. As a comparison, an underwater electrical explosion was also performed. The experimental results suggest that the vapor bubble behavior in liq N2 differs from that in water, especially in the collapse phase, characterized by secondary small-scale bubbles in liq N2, but multiple bubble pulses in water; correspondingly, the products' characteristics are discrepant.

From polyphenol to o-quinone: Occurrence, significance, and intervention strategies in foods and health implications

Polyphenol oxidation is a chemical process impairing food freshness and other desirable qualities, which has become a serious problem in fruit and vegetable processing industry. It is crucial to understand the mechanisms involved in these detrimental alterations. o-Quinones are primarily generated by polyphenols with di/tri-phenolic groups through enzymatic oxidation and/or auto-oxidation. They are highly reactive species, which not only readily suffer the attack by nucleophiles but also powerfully oxidize other molecules presenting lower redox potentials via electron transfer reactions. These reactions and subsequent complicated reactions are capable of initiating quality losses in foods, such as browning, aroma loss, and nutritional decline. To attenuate these adverse influences, a variety of technologies have emerged to restrain polyphenol oxidation via governing different factors, especially polyphenol oxidases and oxygen. Despite tremendous efforts devoted, to date, the loss of food quality caused by quinones has remained a great challenge in the food processing industry. Furthermore, o-quinones are responsible for the chemopreventive effects and/or toxicity of the parent catechols on human health, the mechanisms by which are quite complex. Herein, this review focuses on the generation and reactivity of o-quinones, attempting to clarify mechanisms involved in the quality deterioration of foods and health implications for humans. Potential innovative inhibitors and technologies are also presented to intervene in o-quinone formation and subsequent reactions. In future, the feasibility of these inhibitory strategies should be evaluated, and further exploration on biological targets of o-quinones is of great necessity.

A Computational Model of Cn2 Profile Inversion for Atmospheric Laser Communication in the Vertical Path

In this paper, an atmospheric structure constant Cn2 model is proposed for evaluating the channel turbulence degree of atmospheric laser communication. First, we derive a mathematical model for the correlation between the atmospheric coherence length r0, the isoplanatic angle θ0 and Cn2 using the Hufnagel-Valley (HV) turbulence model. Then, we calculate the seven parameters of the HV model with the actual measured r0 and θ0 data as input quantities, so as to draw the Cn2 profile and the θ0 profile. The experimental results show that the fitted average Cn2 contours and single-day Cn2 contours have superior fitting performance compared with our historical data, and the daily correlation coefficient between the single-day computed θ0 contours and the measured θ0 contours is up to 87%. This result verifies the feasibility of the proposed method. The results validate the feasibility of the proposed method and provide a new technical tool for the inversion of turbulence Cn2 profiles.

Isolation and Characterization of Yeast with Benzenemethanethiol Synthesis Ability Isolated from Baijiu Daqu

Baijiu, a prevalent alcoholic beverage, boasts over 2000 aroma compounds, with sulfur-containing compounds being the most influential in shaping its flavor. Benzenemethanethiol, a distinctive odorant in baijiu, is known to enhance the holistic flavor profile of baijiu. Despite its importance, there is very little literature on the biotransformation mechanism of benzenemethanethiol. Thus, extensive research efforts have been made to elucidate the formation mechanism of this compound in order to improve baijiu production. In this study, 12 yeast strains capable of generating benzenemethanethiol were isolated from baijiu daqu, and the Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain J14 was selected for further investigation. The fermentation conditions were optimized, and it was found that the optimal conditions for producing benzenemethanethiol were at 28 °C for 24 h with a 4% (v/v) inoculum of 3.025 g/L L-cysteine. This is the first time that yeast has been shown to produce benzenemethanethiol isolated from the baijiu fermentation system. These findings also suggest that benzenemethanethiol can be metabolized by yeast using L-cysteine and benzaldehyde as precursor substrates.

Antibiotic Conditioning Shapes Pseudosterile Mouse Models by Deleting Colonic Microbes Rather than Small Intestinal Microbes

A simple model of alternative microbiota in the developing intestinal environment has been highly desirable for the study of health and disease in the gut. The pattern of antibiotic depletion of natural gut microbes is necessary for this model. However, the effects and loci of antibiotic deletion of gut microbes remain unclear. In this study, a mixture of three proven broad-spectrum antibiotics was selected to study their effects on microbial deletions in the jejunum, ileum, and colon of mice. The 16S rRNA sequencing results showed that antibiotics significantly reduced colonic microbial diversity, with limited effects on the jejunum and ileum. At the level of microbial genera, only 93.38% of Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia and 5.89% of Enterorhabdus were present in the colon after antibiotic treatment. However, such changes were not observed in the microbial composition of the jejunum and ileum. Our results suggest that the antibiotics depleted intestinal microorganisms by acting primarily in the colon and not in the small intestine (jejunum and ileum). IMPORTANCE Many studies have applied antibiotics to delete intestinal microbes to shape pseudosterile mouse models and further used for fecal microbial transplantation. However, few studies have explored the spatial location of antibiotic action in the intestine. This study shows that the selected antibiotics effectively deleted microbiota in the colon of mice, with limited effects on microbes in the jejunum and ileum. Our study provides guidance for the application of a mouse model of antibiotic deletion of intestinal microbes.

SlERF.H6 mediates the orchestration of ethylene and gibberellin signaling that suppresses bitter-SGA biosynthesis in tomato

Steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs) constitute a characteristic class of antinutritional metabolites that are found in certain Solanum species. Despite the considerable studies on SGA biosynthesis, the mechanisms of crosstalk between hormone signaling pathways that regulate SGA content still remain to be elucidated. Here, we performed a metabolic genome-wide association study (mGWAS) based on the levels of SGA metabolites and identified SlERF.H6 as a negative regulator of bitter-SGA biosynthesis. SlERF.H6 repressed the expression of SGA biosynthetic glycoalkaloid metabolism (GAME) genes and caused a subsequent decrease in the abundance of bitter SGAs. Furthermore, SlERF.H6 were shown to act downstream of GAME9, a regulator of SGA biosynthesis in tomato. We also uncovered the interplay between ethylene and gibberellin (GA) signaling in regulating SGA biosynthesis. SlERF.H6, acting as a downstream component in ethylene signaling, modulated GA content by inhibiting SlGA2ox12 expression. Increasing levels of endogenous GA₁₂ and GA₅₃ in SlERF.H6-OE could inhibit of GA on SGA biosynthesis. Additionally, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) treatment decreased the stability of SlERF.H6, weakening its inhibition on GAME genes and SlGA2ox12, and caused bitter-SGA accumulation. Our findings reveal a key role of SlERF.H6 in the regulation of SGA biosynthesis through the coordinated ethylene-gibberellin signaling.

Single-cell profiling reveals a potent role of quercetin in promoting hair regeneration

Hair loss affects millions of people at some time in their life, and safe and efficient treatments for hair loss are a significant unmet medical need. We report that topical delivery of quercetin (Que) stimulates resting hair follicles to grow with rapid follicular keratinocyte proliferation and replenishes perifollicular microvasculature in mice. We construct dynamic single-cell transcriptome landscape over the course of hair regrowth and find that Que treatment stimulates the differentiation trajectory in the hair follicles and induces an angiogenic signature in dermal endothelial cells by activating HIF-1α in endothelial cells. Skin administration of a HIF-1α agonist partially recapitulates the pro-angiogenesis and hair-growing effects of Que. Together, these findings provide a molecular understanding for the efficacy of Que in hair regrowth, which underscores the translational potential of targeting the hair follicle niche as a strategy for regenerative medicine, and suggest a route of pharmacological intervention that may promote hair regrowth.

Efficacy and Safety of Acupuncture for Cyclic Mastalgia: Study Protocol for a Randomized, Sham-Controlled Trial

Purpose

Cyclic mastalgia is prevalent among women and negatively impairs their daily life and work. There is still a lack of effective therapies for mastalgia, and acupuncture may be a promising method. We design this multicenter randomized trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on cyclic mastalgia.

Study Design and methods

Sixty participants with moderate-to-severe cyclic breast pain (with a duration of 5-21 days and the worst pain scoring 5 points or more on Numerical Rating Scale [NRS]) will be recruited at three hospitals in China. They will be randomly assigned to acupuncture group or sham-acupuncture group at 1:1 ratio to receive 16-session treatment during 3 consecutive menstrual cycles, and follow-up for 6 menstrual cycles after treatment. The primary outcome is the change from baseline in the NRS score on the worst breast pain during the third cycle of treatment period. All statistical tests will be two-sided and P value <0.05 will be considered statistically significant.

Comprehensive Analysis of Metabolome and Transcriptome Reveals the Regulatory Network of Coconut Nutrients

Coconut flesh is widely consumed in the market for its good flavor. However, a comprehensive and dynamic assessment of the nutrients in coconut flesh and their molecular regulatory mechanisms is lacking. In this study, the metabolite accumulation and gene expression of three representative coconut cultivars belonging to two subspecies were investigated using ultra performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 6101 features were detected, of which 52, 8, and 158 were identified as amino acids and derivatives, polyamines, and lipids, respectively. The analysis of the metabolite pathway showed that glutathione and α-linolenate were the main differential metabolites. Transcriptome data revealed significant differences in the expression of five glutathione structural genes and thirteen polyamine-regulated genes, consistent with trends in metabolite accumulation. Weighted correlation network and co-expression analyses showed that a novel gene WRKY28 was implicated in the regulation of lipid synthesis. These results broaden our understanding of coconut nutrition metabolism and provide new insights into the molecular basis of coconut nutrition metabolism.

Imaging of Fiber Waviness in Thick Composites with Unknown Material Properties Using Probability-Based Ultrasound Non-Reciprocity

Fiber waviness and voids may be produced in thick composites due to improper manufacturing conditions and consequently pose a risk of structural failure. A proof-of-concept solution for imaging fiber waviness in thick porous composites was proposed from both numerical and experimental studies, via calculating ultrasound non-reciprocity along different wave paths in a sensing network constructed by two phased array probes. Time-frequency analyses were conducted to reveal the cause of ultrasound non-reciprocity in wavy composites. Subsequently, the number of elements in the probes and excitation voltages was determined for fiber waviness imaging using the ultrasound non-reciprocity with a probability-based diagnostic algorithm. The fiber angle gradient was observed to cause ultrasound non-reciprocity and fiber waviness in the thick wavy composites were successfully imaged regardless of presence of voids. This study proposes a new feature for the ultrasonic imaging of fiber waviness and is expected to contribute to processing improvement in thick composites without prior knowledge of material anisotropy.

SESN1 is a FOXO3 effector that counteracts human skeletal muscle ageing

Sarcopenia, a skeletal muscle disorder in which loss of muscle mass and function progresses with age, is associated with increased overall frailty, risk of falling and mortality in the elders. Here, we reveal that SESN1 safeguards skeletal muscle from ageing downstream of the longevity gene FOXO3, which we recently reported is a geroprotector in primate skeletal muscle. Knockdown of SESN1 mimicked the human myotube ageing phenotypes observed in the FOXO3-deficient human myotubes, whereas genetic activation of SESN1 alleviated human myotube senescence. Of note, SESN1 was identified as a protective secretory factor against muscle atrophy. Administration of recombinant SESN1 protein attenuated senescence of human myotubes in vitro and facilitated muscle regeneration in vivo. Altogether, we unveil a key role of SESN1 downstream of FOXO3 in protecting skeletal muscle from ageing, providing diagnostic biomarkers and intervention strategies for counteracting skeletal muscle ageing and related diseases.

Automatic Pretreatment of Dispersive Liquid Liquid Microextraction Based on Immunomagnetic Beads Coupled with UPLC-FLD for the Determination of Zearalenone in Corn Oils

Sample pretreatment is a vital step in the detection of mycotoxins, and traditional pretreatment methods are time-consuming, labor-intensive and generate much organic waste liquid. In this work, an automatic, high-throughput and environmentally friendly pretreatment method is proposed. Immunomagnetic beads technology and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction technology are combined, and the zearalenone in corn oils is directly purified and concentrated under the solubilization effects of surfactant. The proposed pretreatment method allows for the batch pretreatment of samples without pre-extraction using organic reagents, and almost no organic waste liquid is produced. Coupled with UPLC-FLD, an effective and accurate quantitative detection method for zearalenone is established. The recovery of spiked zearalenone in corn oils at different concentrations ranges from 85.7 to 89.0%, and the relative standard deviation is below 2.9%. The proposed pretreatment method overcomes the shortcomings of traditional pretreatment methods and has broad application prospects.

Theoretical Modeling and Experimental Verification of the Bending Deformation of Fiber Metal Laminates

Fiber metal laminates have been widely used as the primary materials in aircraft panels, and have excellent specific strength. Bending deformation is the most common loading mode of such components. An accurate theoretical predictive model for the bending process for the carbon reinforced aluminum laminates is of great significance for predicting the actual stress response. In this paper, based on the metal-plastic bending theory and the modified classical fiber laminate theory, a modified bending theory model of carbon-fiber-reinforced aluminum laminates was established. The plastic deformation of the thin metal layer in laminates and the interaction between fiber and metal interfaces were considered in this model. The bending strength was predicted analytically. The FMLs were made from 5052 aluminum sheets, with carbon fibers as the reinforcement, and were bonded and cured by locally manufacturers. The accuracy of the theory was verified by three-point bending experiments, and the prediction error was 8.4%. The results show that the fiber metal laminates consisting of three layers of aluminum and two layers of fiber had the best bending properties. The theoretical model could accurately predict the bending deformation behaviors of fiber metal laminates, and has significant value for the theoretical analysis and performance testing of laminates.

Saturated fatty acid intake, genetic risk and colorectal cancer incidence: A large-scale prospective cohort study

Previous investigations mainly focused on the associations of dietary fatty acids with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, which ignored gene-environment interaction and mechanisms interpretation. We conducted a case-control study (751 cases and 3058 controls) and a prospective cohort study (125 021 participants) to explore the associations between dietary fatty acids, genetic risks, and CRC. Results showed that high intake of saturated fatty acid (SFA) was associated with a higher risk of CRC than low SFA intake (HR =1.22, 95% CI:1.02-1.46). Participants at high genetic risk had a greater risk of CRC with the HR of 2.48 (2.11-2.91) than those at low genetic risk. A multiplicative interaction of genetic risk and SFA intake with incident CRC risk was found (P_Interaction  = 7.59 × 10^-20 ), demonstrating that participants with high genetic risk and high SFA intake had a 3.75-fold greater risk of CRC than those with low genetic risk and low SFA intake. Furthermore, incorporating PRS and SFA into traditional clinical risk factors improved the discriminatory accuracy for CRC risk stratification (AUC from 0.706 to 0.731). Multi-omics data showed that exposure to SFA-rich high-fat dietary (HFD) can responsively induce epigenome reprogramming of some oncogenes and pathological activation of fatty acid metabolism pathway, which may contribute to CRC development through changes in gut microbiomes, metabolites, and tumor-infiltrating immune cells. These findings suggest that individuals with high genetic risk of CRC may benefit from reducing SFA intake. The incorporation of SFA intake and PRS into traditional clinical risk factors will help improve high-risk sub-populations in individualized CRC prevention.

Brevilin A is a potent anti-metastatic CRC agent that targets the VEGF-IL6-STAT3 axis in the HSCs-CRC interplay

BACKGROUND

More than half of the colorectal cancer (CRC) patients will develop liver metastasis that underlies the cancer mortality. In the hepatic tumor microenvironment, the interplay between CRC cells and hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), and the activation of HSCs to become carcinoma-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) will further promote the cancer development. Nevertheless, the critical signaling molecule that involved in these processes remains unknown, which hinders the development of effective therapeutic agents for the treatment of metastatic CRC (mCRC).

METHODS

Conditioned medium system and co-cultured system were used to examine the interplay between CRC cells and HSCs. Luminex liquid suspension chip detection and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used to screen for the mediators in the conditioned medium that facilitated the CRC-HSCs interplay and HSCs-to-CAFs differentiation. Cell and animal models were used to examine whether brevilin A inhibited CRC liver metastasis via the VEGF-IL6-STAT3 axis.

RESULTS

In the CRC-HSCs interplay, CRC promoted HSCs-to-CAFs differentiation by releasing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF); and HSCs released interleukin 6 (IL6) that activated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in the CRC and hence increased the cancer metastatic potential. The functions of the VEGF-IL6-STAT3 axis in the HSCs-CRC interplay were further validated by VEGF recombinant protein and IL6 neutralizing antibody. More importantly, brevilin A, an active compound isolated from Centipeda minima (L.) A. Br. et Aschers, targeted the VEGF-IL6-STAT3 axis in the CRC-HSCs interplay, hence significantly inhibited colorectal liver metastasis and cancer growth both in vitro and in vivo.

CONCLUSIONS

We are the first to demonstrate brevilin A possesses potent anti-mCRC effect by targeting the VEGF-IL6-STAT3 axis in the CRC-HSCs interplay. Our findings not only support the development of brevilin A as a novel therapeutic agent for mCRC treatment, but also pave the path for the development of other VEGF-IL6-STAT3 targeting therapeutic strategies.

Mechanistic insights into the changes of enzyme activity in food processing under microwave irradiation

Microwave (MW) and enzyme catalysis are two emerging processing tools in the field of food industry. Recently, MW has been widely utilized as a novel type of green and safe heating energy. However, the effect of MW irradiation on enzyme activity is not described clearly. The intrinsic mechanisms behind enzyme activation and inactivation remain obscure. To apply better MW to the field of enzyme catalysis, it is essential to gain insights into the mechanism of MW action on enzyme activity. This review summarizes the changes in various enzyme activity during food processing, especially under MW irradiation. The intrinsic mechanism of thermal and nonthermal effects of MW irradiation was analyzed from the perspective of enzyme reaction kinetics and spatial structure. MW irradiation temperature is a vital parameter affecting the catalytic activity of enzymes. Activation of the enzyme activity is achieved even at high MW power when the enzyme is operating at its optimum temperature. However, when the temperature exceeds the optimum temperature, the enzyme activity is inhibited. In addition to MW dielectric heating effect, nonthermal MW effects also alter the microenvironment of reactive system. Taken together, enzyme activity is influenced by both thermal and nonthermal MW effects.

Thickness-Dependent Topological Hall Effect in 2D Cr5 Si3 Nanosheets with Noncollinear Magnetic Phase

Antiferromagnets with noncollinear spin order are expected to exhibit unconventional electromagnetic response, such as spin Hall effects, chiral abnormal, quantum Hall effect, and topological Hall effect. Here, 2D thickness-controlled and high-quality Cr5 Si3 nanosheets that are compatible with the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology are synthesized by chemical vapor deposition method. The angular dependence of electromagnetic transport properties of Cr5 Si3 nanosheets is investigated using a physical property measurement system, and an obvious topological Hall effect (THE) appears at a large tilted magnetic field, which results from the noncollinear magnetic structure of the Cr5 Si3 nanosheet. The Cr5 Si3 nanosheets exhibit distinct thickness-dependent perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), and the THE only emerges in the specific thickness range with moderate PMA. This work provides opportunities for exploring fundamental spin-related physical mechanisms of noncollinear antiferromagnet in ultrathin limit.

Association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome: linear and nonlinear Mendelian randomization analyses

BACKGROUND

Observational studies have found that both short and long sleep duration are associated with increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study aimed to examine the associations of genetically determined sleep durations with MetS and its five components (i.e., central obesity, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hyperglycemia) among a group of elderly population.

METHODS

In 335,727 participants of White British from the UK Biobank, linear Mendelian randomization (MR) methods were first employed to examine the causal association of genetically predicted continuous sleep duration with MetS and its each component. Nonlinear MR analyses were performed to determine the nonlinearity of these associations. The causal associations of short and long sleep duration with MetS and its components were further assessed by using genetic variants that associated with short (≤ 6 h) and long sleep (≥ 9 h) durations.

RESULTS

Linear MR analyses demonstrated that genetically predicted 1-h longer sleep duration was associated with a 13% lower risk of MetS, a 30% lower risk of central obesity, and a 26% lower risk of hyperglycemia. Non-linear MR analyses provided evidence for non-linear associations of genetically predicted sleep duration with MetS and its five components (all P values < 0.008). Genetically predicted short sleep duration was moderately associated with MetS and its four components, including central obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and hyperglycemia (all P values < 0.002), whereas genetically long sleep duration was not associated with MetS and any of its components.

CONCLUSIONS

Genetically predicted short sleep duration, but not genetically predicted long sleep duration, is a potentially causal risk factor for MetS.

Multi-layered roles of BBX proteins in plant growth and development

Light and phytohormone are external and internal cues that regulate plant growth and development throughout their life cycle. BBXs (B-box domain proteins) are a group of zinc finger proteins that not only directly govern the transcription of target genes but also associate with other factors to create a meticulous regulatory network to precisely regulate numerous aspects of growth and developmental processes in plants. Recent studies demonstrate that BBXs play pivotal roles in light-controlled plant growth and development. Besides, BBXs have been documented to regulate phytohormone-mediated physiological procedures. In this review, we summarize and highlight the multi-faced role of BBXs, with a focus in photomorphogenesis, photoperiodic flowering, shade avoidance, abiotic stress, and phytohormone-mediated growth and development in plant.

Effects of glyphosate on the growth, development, and physiological functions of silkworm, Bombyx mori

Glyphosate is an herbicide widely used worldwide, but whether it is safe to nontarget organisms is controversial. In this study, the lepidopteran model insect silkworm was used to investigate the effects of glyphosate residues. The LC50 (72 h) of glyphosate on silkworm was determined to be 14875.98 mg/L, and after exposure to glyphosate at 2975.20 mg/L (a concentration comparable to that used for weed control in mulberry fields), silkworm growth was inhibited by 9.00%, total cocoon weight was lowered by 10.53%, feed digestibility was decreased by 7.56%, and the activities of alpha-amylase and trypsin were reduced by 10.41% and 21.32%, respectively. Pathological analysis revealed that glyphosate exposure led to significantly damaged midgut, along with thinner basal layer, shedding microvilli, blurred cytoplasmic membrane, and appearance of vacuoles. Exposure to glyphosate also led to accumulation of peroxides in the intestinal tissue; the messenger RNA transcription of SOD, Cu/Zn-SOD, and Mn-SOD was all significantly upregulated by glyphosate treatment for 24 h, while CAT transcription was increased at 24, 48, and 72 h. The activity of SOD was increased significantly at 24 h, while significant activity changes were observed for CAT at 72 and 96 h. These results indicated that exposure to glyphosate caused oxidative stress in the midgut of silkworm and affected the midgut's physiological function. This study provides important insights in evaluating the impact of glyphosate residues in the environment on nontarget organisms.
