A survey of interventions used by speech-language pathologists for children with speech sound disorders in the Middle East

PURPOSE

While many examples of speech pathology intervention approaches for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs) exist in English and some other European languages, approaches with children in other languages are largely unknown. The aim was to determine current speech-language pathologists (SLPs) intervention practices with children with SSDs in the ME, and to then compare these with international practices.

METHODS

Data were collected by online questionnaire using Qualtrics. One hundred and eighty-nine SLPs completed the survey. Participants were required to be Arabic first language speaking SLPs practicing in the ME (e.g. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Egypt), working with children with SSDs.

RESULTS

The respondents reported a frequent use of phonological awareness, traditional articulation therapy, auditory discrimination, minimal pairs, and whole language therapy approaches in the treatment of children with SSDs, like their counterparts in Australia, the USA, UK, and Portugal. Gaps between research recommendations for evidence-based practice and actual clinical practice are identified, and discussed.

CONCLUSIONS

Future research should investigate the efficacy of speech-therapy approaches to improve service delivery for Arabic-speaking children with SSDs in the ME.

Transcultural and familial factors in bilingualism and language transmission: A qualitative study of maternal representations of French-Maghrebi Arabic bilingual children

This qualitative exploratory study examined transcultural and familial factors involved in bilingualism and minority language transmission among French and Arabic-speaking children. Participants included 30 children aged 4 to 6 years, born in France, and their bilingual French-Maghrebi Arabic-speaking parents. Children's bilingual language profiles were assessed with the ELAL Scale for Maghrebi Arabic (minority language) and the Neel Scale for French (majority language). Mothers participated in qualitative interviews about cultural and language practices and representations. Interview contents were compared with the children's language profiles. Results indicated that parents closely associated the transmission of the Arabic language with their cultural heritage transmission. The parents of fluent bilinguals had a strong desire to transmit the minority language. Mothers of minority language dominant bilingual children reported little perception of change in their lives since migration. Half of the mothers of majority language dominant bilingual children reported relationship or emotional difficulties with their children. Four minority language transmission types were identified: direct parent-child transmission; indirect transmission through private classes; indirect transmission through visits to family in the parents' native countries; and alternative transmission by another family member. Direct parent-child transmission was most frequent among the fluent bilinguals. Families' processes of hybridity were related to language transmission and bilingual development of children. Parental cultural affiliations to native country were related to minority language transmission. Perception of change since migration and affiliation to host country may also play a role in harmonious bilingual development. Moreover, the quality of family relationships can affect minority language transmission.

Writing Units or Decades First in Two Digit Numbers Dictation Tasks: The Case of Arabic-An Inverted Language

This study investigated the effect of educational level and of the syntactic representation of numbers in Arabic on the task of transcoding two-digit numbers from dictation. The participants were primary, junior-high, and high school pupils and higher education students. All spoke Arabic as a mother tongue. They performed a transcoding task, namely writing two-digit numbers from dictation. Units first\decades first writing patterns were collected depending on the differential syntactic structures of the two-digit number dictated (decades first: whole tens; units first: teen numbers; identical units and decades, remaining two-digit numbers). The findings reveal that in general, Arabic speakers adopt a decades-first writing pattern for two-digit numbers, especially when it is consistent with the syntactic structure of two-digit numbers, as in whole-tens numbers. This decade-first writing pattern is more evident and consistent in junior-high school, high school, and higher education than in primary school due to the improvement in mathematical skills and second and third languages. However, this pattern is modulated by the syntactic complexity of the unit-decade structure. This complexity is more pronounced in two-digit numbers whose processing is more dependent on numerical syntax. Thus, whole-tens numbers, teen numbers, and identical-decade-unit numbers are less complex than the remaining two-digit numbers.

A multi-centric study on validation of the Fear Scale for COVID-19 in five Arabic speaking countries

BACKGROUND

The Eight-item Fear Scale is a unidimensional scale evaluating the perceived feelings of fear associated with the thought of the coronavirus.

AIM

The Arabic version of this scale did not exist; hence, this study aimed to translate and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Fear Scale in participants aged 18 years and above in five Arabic countries: Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan by using a cross-sectional survey design.

METHOD

The English version of the COVID-19 Fear Scale was translated into Arabic following the guidelines and disseminated through social media. Factorial and convergent validity and internal reliability were evaluated.

RESULTS

The total number of participants was 2783; the majority was young (41.9%) and female (60.5%). Fear scores were moderate in four countries and severe in Egypt. The scale showed good structural validity, with the items explaining up to 70% of the variance. The scale items correlated significantly with the total scores, and the Cronbach alpha was above 0.9.

CONCLUSION

The study concluded that the Arabic Fear Scale is a psychometrically robust scale that can be used to evaluate the perceived feelings of fear with the thought of the coronavirus or pandemic in general.

The Epic of the Thalamus in Anatomical Language

Understanding the origin of Greek and Latin words used as metaphors to label brain structures gives a unique window into how scientific and medical knowledge was produced, preserved, and transmitted through generations. The history of the term thalamus exemplifies the complex historical process that led to the current anatomical terminology. From its first mention by Galen of Pergamon in the 2nd century A.D. to its definitive and current use by Thomas Willis in 1664, the thalamus had an epical journey through 1500 years across Europe, the Middle East, and the North of Africa. The thalamus was confusingly described by Galen, in the Greek language, as a chamber to the brain ventricles. The term thalamus was transferred from Greek to Syriac through the translations of Galen’s books done in Baghdad and also from Syriac to Arabic. Then, it was translated in Europe during the Middle Ages from the Arabic versions of Galen’s books to Latin. Later, during the Early Renaissance, it was translated again to Latin directly from the Greek versions of Galen’s books. Along this epical journey through languages, the term thalamus switched from referring to a hollow structure connected to brain ventricles to naming a solid structure at the rostral end of the brainstem. Finally, the thalamus was translated from Latin to modern languages, where it is used, until today, to name a nuclear complex of subcortical gray matter in the lateral walls of the third ventricle.

Validation of the Arabic and French Versions of a Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) Questionnaire on Tranquilizer Misuse

Tranquilizer misuse is an emerging international public health concern. The psychosocial determinants of this misuse remain understudied. Instruments to measure the Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) of tranquilizer misuse are unavailable, except for a recently published questionnaire validated in the Spanish language. We translated the KAP questionnaire into Arabic and French, adapted it and undertook a complete validation procedure in the general adult population in Lebanon. The content validity indicators were good: item content validity index ranged between 0.89 and 1.00, the content validity index scale average was ≥0.95 and the modified Kappa statistic for each of the KAP items was equal to I-CVI. The intra-class correlation coefficient values (n = 100) were ≥0.62 for all Knowledge and Attitudes items, demonstrating the item reliability. Confirmatory factorial analysis (n = 1450) showed that the selected model of Knowledge and Attitude constructs has adequate fit indicators and encompassed three factors that showed acceptable internal reliability: Knowledge (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.72), personal Attitudes towards tranquilizers (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.79) and Attitudes towards healthcare providers (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.65). The Arabic/French questionnaire was highly accepted, with a response rate of 95.72% and item non-response rate ≤3.6%. The availability of a cross-cultural adapted and multilingual validated questionnaire would stimulate research on tranquilizer misuse.

Adaptation and Validation of the Mini-Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination in Dementia in Arabic Speakers in Egypt

BACKGROUND

The mini-Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination (m-ACE) is a brief cognitive battery that assesses 5 subdomains of cognition (attention, memory, verbal fluency, visuospatial abilities, and memory recall). It is scored out of 30 and can be administered in under 5 min providing a quick screening tool for assessment of cognition.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to adapt the m-ACE in Arabic speakers in Egypt and to validate it in dementia patients to provide cutoff scores.

METHODS

We included 37 patients with dementia (Alzheimer's disease [n = 25], vascular dementia [n = 8], and dementia with Lewy body [n = 4]) and 43 controls.

RESULTS

There was a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) on the total m-ACE score between dementia patients (mean 10.54 and standard deviation [SD] 5.83) and controls (mean 24.02 and SD 2.75). There was also a statistically significant difference between dementia patients and controls on all sub-score domains of the m-ACE (p < 0.05). Performance on the m-ACE significantly correlated with both the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-III (ACE-III). Using a receiver operator characteristic curve, the optimal cutoff score for dementia on the m-ACE total score was found to be 18 (92% sensitivity, 95% specificity, and 94% accuracy).

CONCLUSIONS

We adapted the m-ACE in Arabic speakers in Egypt and provided objective validation of it as a screening tool for dementia, with high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy.

Validation of the Arabic version of the Ocular Surface Disease Index Questionnaire

AIM

To develop an Arabic version of the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and to assess its reliability and validity.

METHODS

A cross sectional study was carried out to validate the Arabic version of the OSDI questionnaire. Initially, forward-backward translation was used to translate the English version of OSDI into Arabic. The translated questionnaire was tested for equivalence and cultural adaptability. Totally 200 subjects were then recruited from a non-clinical population and asked to complete the Arabic version of the OSDI (ARB-OSDI). The reliability of the questionnaire was assessed using Cronbach's-α. A subgroup of 30 participants was asked to complete the questionnaire on two occasions to test the test-retest reliability.

RESULTS

A total of 200 participants were enrolled in the study. The average age of the study participants was 31.21±13.2y and 57% were male. An acceptable internal consistency level for the ARB-OSDI questionnaire measured by Cronbach's-α was revealed. All questions showed good internal consistency. Test-retest reliability analysis revealed good stability (interclass correlation coefficient, r=0.832, P<0.001). The construct validity for the questionnaire was also high.

CONCLUSION

The ARB-OSDI questionnaire shows very good psychometric properties (acceptable internal consistency and test-retest reliability). That makes the questionnaire a valid potential tool to use in Arabic-speaking countries to monitor symptoms of dry eye disease in a larger population.

Validation of the Arabic version of the Dusseldorf Orthorexia Scale (DOS) among Lebanese adolescents

BACKGROUND

Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) is defined as a pathological preoccupation characterized by obsessive beliefs and compulsive behaviors regarding 'pure' eating behaviors. Many scales have been established and display good results regarding reliability and validity measures, including but not limited to ORTO-R (revised version of ORTO-15), Eating Habits Questionnaire, Teruel Orthorexia Scale (TOS) and the Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale (DOS). Among these, the DOS seems to be a promising measure for multiple reasons. The current paper aims to validate the DOS, a measure of ON, in a non-Western population of Lebanese adolescents.

METHODS

This was a cross-sectional designed study, conducted between May and June 2020, which enrolled 555 adolescents (15-18 years old; 75.7% females). Due the coronavirus pandemic outbreak, the data were gathered through snowball sampling using an online questionnaire. The DOS, TOS and ORTO-R scales were used in this study to screen for orthorexic tendencies and behaviors.

RESULTS

We tested four competing structural models of the DOS assessing its factorial validity. The results of the current investigation revealed that the one-factorial model is the best one to represent the structure of the questionnaire. We provided evidence for validity for the DOS through demonstrating that it correlates significantly with other measures of orthorexic behaviours (Teruel Orthorexia Scale and ORTO-R). Finally, we have gathered evidence that the orthorexic behaviours as measured by DOS are not associated with age (r = -.02; p = .589), household crowding index (r = .02; p = .578), and Body Mass Index (r = .04; p = .297). Yet, females as compared to males achieved higher scores (M = 20.07, SD = 6.38 vs M = 18.29, SD = 6.37; p = .005; d = .28).

CONCLUSION

The Arabic version of the DOS seems to be a structurally valid and internally consistent questionnaire measuring orthorexic eating behavior in a sample of Lebanese adolescents. This tool may be useful for psychologists, psychiatrists, dietitians and other clinicians in the assessment and the treatment of the multidimensional nature of ON.

The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 21: Development and Validation of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale 8-Item in Psychiatric Patients and the General Public for Easier Mental Health Measurement in a Post COVID-19 World

Despite extensive investigations of the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21) since its development in 1995, its factor structure and other psychometric properties still need to be firmly established, with several calls for revising its item structure. Employing confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), this study examined the factor structure of the DASS-21 and five shortened versions of the DASS-21 among psychiatric patients (N = 168) and the general public (N = 992) during the COVID-19 confinement period in Saudi Arabia. Multigroup CFA, Mann Whitney W test, Spearman's correlation, and coefficient alpha were used to examine the shortened versions of the DASS-21 (DASS-13, DASS-12, DASS-9 (two versions), and DASS-8) for invariance across age and gender groups, discriminant validity, predictive validity, item coverage, and internal consistency, respectively. Compared with the DASS-21, all three-factor structures of the shortened versions expressed good fit, with the DASS-8 demonstrating the best fit and highest item loadings on the corresponding factors in both samples (χ2(16, 15) = 16.5, 67.0; p = 0.420, 0.001; CFI = 1.000, 0.998; TLI = 0.999, 0.997; RMSEA = 0.013, 0.059, SRMR = 0.0186, 0.0203). The DASS-8 expressed configural, metric, and scalar invariance across age and gender groups. Its internal consistency was comparable to other versions (α = 0.94). Strong positive correlations of the DASS-8 and its subscales with the DASS-21 and its subscales (r = 0.97 to 0.81) suggest adequate item coverage and good predictive validity of this version. The DASS-8 and its subscales distinguished the clinical sample from the general public at the same level of significance expressed by the DASS-21 and other shortened versions, supporting its discriminant validity. Neither the DASS-21 nor the shortened versions distinguished patients diagnosed with depression and anxiety from each other or from other psychiatric conditions. The DASS-8 represents a valid short version of the DASS-21, which may be useful in research and clinical practice for quick identification of individuals with potential psychopathologies. Diagnosing depression/anxiety disorders may be further confirmed in a next step by clinician-facilitated examinations. Brevity of the DASS-21 would save time and effort used for filling the questionnaire and support comprehensive assessments by allowing the inclusion of more measures on test batteries.

Validation of the Arabic Childbirth Care Satisfaction Survey

Background

Measuring maternal satisfaction in Arab countries is an essential indicator of care quality. However, existing surveys have limited psychometric properties and inclusion criteria.

Aims

To present the psychometric properties of the Arabic Childbirth Care Satisfaction Survey (CCSS).

Methods

The Arabic CCSS was developed from 2 English surveys. In 2017, 13 mothers assessed survey items in terms of clarity, importance and acceptability. The CCSS was distributed to all mothers who delivered a live baby during the 4-week study period in 9 hospitals in Oman. A sample of 461 participants was used for principal component analysis (PCA) and another sample of 408 participants (after removing missing data) was used for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Two-sample independent t tests were conducted to establish discriminant validity. Stata software was used for the analysis.

Results

The survey demonstrated good face and content validity with all items rated above 3 out of 5. Out of the 3566 targeted population, 958 (26.9%) mothers participated. PCA identified 2 factors labelled as communication and control (Cronbach's α = 0.90) and care organization (Cronbach's α = 0.68) with good internal reliability. CFA demonstrated good model fit, confirming construct validity. Mothers who had vaginal delivery were more satisfied (P < 0.05) compared with those who underwent caesarean section, thus establishing good discriminant validity.

Conclusion

A short Arabic CCSS tool was developed. This new 10-item tool had good face and content validity, good internal reliability, construct validity and discriminant validity. It can provide valuable information to clinicians and decision-makers about the quality of maternity services.

Social Media Monitoring of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Influenza Epidemic With Adaptation for Informal Language in Arabic Twitter Data: Qualitative Study

BACKGROUND

Twitter is a real-time messaging platform widely used by people and organizations to share information on many topics. Systematic monitoring of social media posts (infodemiology or infoveillance) could be useful to detect misinformation outbreaks as well as to reduce reporting lag time and to provide an independent complementary source of data compared with traditional surveillance approaches. However, such an analysis is currently not possible in the Arabic-speaking world owing to a lack of basic building blocks for research and dialectal variation.

OBJECTIVE

We collected around 4000 Arabic tweets related to COVID-19 and influenza. We cleaned and labeled the tweets relative to the Arabic Infectious Diseases Ontology, which includes nonstandard terminology, as well as 11 core concepts and 21 relations. The aim of this study was to analyze Arabic tweets to estimate their usefulness for health surveillance, understand the impact of the informal terms in the analysis, show the effect of deep learning methods in the classification process, and identify the locations where the infection is spreading.

METHODS

We applied the following multilabel classification techniques: binary relevance, classifier chains, label power set, adapted algorithm (multilabel adapted k-nearest neighbors [MLKNN]), support vector machine with naive Bayes features (NBSVM), bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT), and AraBERT (transformer-based model for Arabic language understanding) to identify tweets appearing to be from infected individuals. We also used named entity recognition to predict the place names mentioned in the tweets.

RESULTS

We achieved an F1 score of up to 88% in the influenza case study and 94% in the COVID-19 one. Adapting for nonstandard terminology and informal language helped to improve accuracy by as much as 15%, with an average improvement of 8%. Deep learning methods achieved an F1 score of up to 94% during the classifying process. Our geolocation detection algorithm had an average accuracy of 54% for predicting the location of users according to tweet content.

CONCLUSIONS

This study identified two Arabic social media data sets for monitoring tweets related to influenza and COVID-19. It demonstrated the importance of including informal terms, which are regularly used by social media users, in the analysis. It also proved that BERT achieves good results when used with new terms in COVID-19 tweets. Finally, the tweet content may contain useful information to determine the location of disease spread.

Psychometric Properties of the Arabic Version of Medication Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale-Revised in Hypertension

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Cultural adaptation of Medication Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale-Revised is lacking in the Arabs population. This study tested the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Medication Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale-Revised.

METHODS

The study included 199 Omani hypertensive patients. The scale was translated into Arabic. Reliability and construct and convergent validity were examined.

RESULTS

Scale's reliability was α = .93. One factor was identified and explained about 57.5% of the variance. A new modified model with covariance suggested a better model fit. A significant relationship between the scale and Morisky medication adherence scale was found (r = .53, p < .001).

CONCLUSIONS

The Arabic version scale is reliable, valid, and could be applied in the clinical settings to improve medication adherence.

Validation of the Arabic version of the Eating Attitude Test in Lebanon: a population study

OBJECTIVES

To validate an Arabic version of the Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26) and identify factors (such as depression, stress, anxiety and body dissatisfaction) that might be associated with disordered eating among a sample of the Lebanese population.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study.

SETTING

All Lebanese governorates.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of 811 participants randomly selected participated in this 5-month study (January-May 2018).

RESULTS

The EAT-26 scale items converged over a solution of six factors that had an eigenvalue over 1, explaining a total of 60·07 % of the variance (Cronbach's α = 0·895). The prevalence of disordered eating attitudes was 23·8 %. Higher EAT-26 scores (disordered eating attitudes) were significantly associated with higher depression (β = 0·325), higher emotional eating (β = 0·083), daily weighing (β = 3·430), higher physical activity (β = 0·05), starving to reduce weight (β = 4·94) and feeling pressure from TV/magazine to lose weight (β = 3·95).

CONCLUSIONS

The Arabic version of EAT-26 can be a useful instrument for screening and assessing disordered eating attitudes in clinical practice and research. Some factors seem to be associated with more disordered eating attitudes among participants for whom psychological counseling may be needed. Yet, our findings are considered preliminary, and further studies are warranted to confirm them.

Validity and reliability of the Arabic version of Muller's prenatal attachment inventory

PURPOSE

Maternal fetal attachment (MFA) is the bond between the mother and her unborn baby. Presently no tools measuring MFA are available in Arabic. The aim of this study was to translate Muller's Prenatal Attachment Inventory (PAI) from English to Arabic, examine the cultural appropriateness of this tool, and test its psychometric properties with pregnant women in an Arab country.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The PAI was translated from English into Arabic using the Universal Translation Approach (modified tool) and assessed for content validity. During this process four additional items were identified for measurement relevance and cultural acceptability resulting in the revised tool. The psychometric properties of the modified and revised tools were assessed after 250 pregnant Arab women completed the PAI. Factor analysis was conducted to assess construct validity, while reliability was assessed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient.

RESULTS

Both tools were shown to be unidimensional with excellent reliability (Cronbach's alpha = 0.88 for the modified tool and 0.89 for the revised tool). Nulliparity, planning to breastfeed the baby, feeling fetal movements, and downloading a smartphone app to follow the baby's growth were associated with increased MFA in the PAI, while only planning to breastfeed the baby, feeling fetal movements, and downloading a smartphone app to follow the baby's growth were associated with increased MFA in the revised PAI.

CONCLUSION

The Arabic version of the PAI is a culturally appropriate tool to measure MFA amongst Arabic-speaking women.

The validation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Arabic version of the pregnancy physical activity questionnaire

Objectives:

To translate the pregnancy physical activity questionnaire (PPAQ) into Arabic language, cross-culturally adapt and test its reliability and validity among Saudi pregnant women.

Methods:

Pregnancy physical activity questionnaire, which consisted of 36 items, was translated to Arabic following the World Health Organization’s guidelines for tool translation (forward translation, expert panel and back translation, pretesting and cognitive interviewing, and final version), followed by validation by experts. This is a cross-sectional study and data were collected from 118 healthy pregnant Saudi women from May to June 2019. Validity included content validity indices (CVI) and construct validity by Rasch analysis. Reliability was assessed by test-retest reliability and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient.

Results:

The mean age of the participants was 30.15 ± 5.59 years; 38.2% of them had normal pre-gestational body mass index (n=45). The median of total energy expenditure in physical activity was 356.1 METs.h/week (IQR=162.3-648.3). Item content validity index was good ranging between 0.8-1. Rasch analysis showed good construct validity and excellent reliability for all types of physical activity (>0.89).

Conclusion:

This Arabic PPAQ is a reliable and valid tool that can be used in Arab countries.

Translation, cultural adaptation, and evaluation of the psychometric properties of an Arabic diabetes distress scale: A cross sectional study from Saudi Arabia

Objectives:

To translate, validate, and adapt the diabetes distress scale (DDS)-17 to a Saudi Arabian (SA) DDS (SADDS-17). Also, to evaluate the psychometric properties of the newly adapted SADDS-17.

Methods:

This was a cross-sectional study evaluating the psychometric properties of the DDS. The DDS was translated using the forward-backward translation from English to Arabic at King Saud University Medical City (KSUMC), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in January 2016. Statistical analyses included exploratory factor analysis, internal consistency, testretest reliability, and construct validity. Moreover, contingent validity was evaluated using hospital anxiety and depression scale, visual analogue scale, and the World Health Organization quality of life assessment instrument.

Results:

A total of 109 participants were included in this study. The exploratory factor analysis of our Arabic scale supported the original DDS with 4 sub-scales. Correlations ranged from 0.376 to 0.718 for items in regimen-related distress, 0.327 to 0.533 for items in emotional burden, 0.413 to 0.722 for items in physician-related distress, and 0.492 to 0.556 for items in interpersonal distress. The Cronbach’s alpha value of the SADDS was 0.848 for the total scale. The test-retest reliability value was 0.78.

Conclusion:

Our SADDS is a valid and reliable instrument for detecting diabetes distress among Saudi Arabian patients with type 2 diabetes.

Validation and clinical application of the Arabic rhinoplasty outcomes evaluation questionnaire

Objectives:

To carry out translation, cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of the rhinoplasty outcome evaluation (ROE) into Arabic.

Methods:

This non-randomized, prospective study included 50 patients from the Otorhinolaryngology Department, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia who underwent primary rhinoplasty from January to October 2020 and a control group of 89 healthy individuals. The reliability of the Arabic (ROE) was tested using Cronbach’s alpha. The test-retest reliability was assessed by estimating the intra-class correlation coefficient for the total Arabic (ROE) score and individual items. Discriminant validity was used to examine the validity of the Arabic (ROE) by comparing the scores of the patients and the control group. The Friedman test was used to measure differences in Arabic (ROE) ratings within the study patients’ group, including preoperative, and 2 weeks, and 3 months postoperative ratings.

Results:

The internal consistency and reliability of the Arabic (ROE) were good. There was a significant difference in ratings between rhinoplasty patients and the control group regarding both the individual questions and total scores. Significant improvement was observed in the patient group ratings at 2 weeks and 3 months postoperatively compared to the preoperative rating (p<0.0001).

Conclusions:

The Arabic version of the (ROE) showed good reliability and validity and can be used in the assessment of rhinoplasty outcomes in the Arabic population.

Psychometric Validation of the Arabic Fear of Illness and Virus Evaluation

Global infectious pandemics can affect the psychology and behavior of human beings. Several tools were developed to evaluate the psychological impact of such outbreaks. The present study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Arabic translated version of Fear of Illness and Virus Evaluation scale (FIVE). FIVE is a 35-item tool consisting of four subscales that measure Fears about Contamination and Illness, Fears about Social Distancing, Behaviors Related to Illness and Virus Fears and Impact of Illness and Virus Fears. The tool was translated into Arabic by using a forward-backward translation. The online questionnaire contained the following sections: demographics, FIVE, Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) and face validity questions. Non-probability convenient sampling technique was used to recruit participants via a mobile instant messaging application. Reliability, concurrent validity, face validity and factor analysis were examined. The data consisted of 509 adult participants who reside in Saudi Arabia. The internal consistency of the Arabic FIVE subscales was high (0.84-0.91) with strong concurrent validity indicated by positive correlations of FIVE subscales with FCV-19S. Factor analysis suggested slightly different factor structures (Fears of Getting Sick, Fears that Others Get Sick, Fears of the Impact on Social Life and Behaviors Related to Illness and Virus Fears). Our data showed a better fit using the proposed structures. The Arabic version of the FIVE showed robust validity and reliability qualities to assess fear of COVID-19 on Arabic adult population.

Reliability and validity of the Arabic translation of the palliative performance scale

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to translate the Palliative Performance Scale (PPSv2) into Arabic and to test the reliability and validity of the PPS Arabic translation (PPS-Arabic).

METHOD

The PPSv2 was translated into Modern Standard Arabic using a forward-backward method. Inter-rater and intra-rater reliabilities were tested in a pilot study that included 20 patients. The validation study included 150 cancer patients. Patients were divided according to their treatment plan into three groups (in-remission, palliative chemotherapy, and best supportive care) to perform hypothesis-testing construct validity. Validity was further evaluated by correlating PPS-Arabic with the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) scale, and Physical Functioning (PF2) and Role Functioning (RF2) scales of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality of life questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30).

RESULTS

The intraclass correlation coefficients for the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability were 0.935 (95% CI: 0.88-0.965; p < 0.001) and 0.965 (95% CI: 0.934-0.981; p < 0.001), respectively. The PPS-Arabic internal consistency Cronbach's alpha was 0.986. The average PPS-Arabic score differed significantly (p < 0.001) between the three groups of patients being 89 for in-remission, 58 for palliative chemotherapy, and 38 for best supportive care. The PPS-Arabic score correlated significantly (p < 0.001) with the KPS, ECOG performance scale, and the EORTC QLQ-C30 PF2 and RF2 scales.

CONCLUSION

The PPS-Arabic is a reliable and valid tool for the assessment of performance status of cancer patients.

Validation of the Egyptian-Arabic Version of the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) in Diagnosing Dementia

INTRODUCTION

The Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination III (ACE-III) (2012) is a brief cognitive battery that assesses five sub-domains of cognition (attention and orientation, memory, verbal fluency, language, and visuospatial abilities) which are commonly impaired in dementia.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to validate the Egyptian-Arabic ACE-III in dementia patients, and to provide cut-off scores for the ACE-III in diagnosing dementia in Egyptian-Arabic speakers.

METHODS

We included 37 patients with dementia (Alzheimer's disease, n = 25, vascular dementia, n = 8, and dementia with Lewy bodies, n = 4) and 43 controls.

RESULTS

There was a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) in the total ACE-III score between dementia patients (mean 49.81 ± 18.58) and controls (mean 84.84 ± 6.36). There was also a statistically significant difference between dementia patients and controls in all sub-score domains of the ACE-III (p < 0.001). Using a receiver operator characteristic curve, the optimal cut-off score for dementia on the ACE-III total score was 72, (89% sensitivity, 95% specificity, 92% accuracy).

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study provide objective validation of the Egyptian-Arabic version of the ACE-III as a screening tool for dementia, with high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy comparable to other translated versions of the ACE-III.

Bias and comparison framework for abusive language datasets

Recently, numerous datasets have been produced as research activities in the field of automatic detection of abusive language or hate speech have increased. A problem with this diversity is that they often differ, among other things, in context, platform, sampling process, collection strategy, and labeling schema. There have been surveys on these datasets, but they compare the datasets only superficially. Therefore, we developed a bias and comparison framework for abusive language datasets for their in-depth analysis and to provide a comparison of five English and six Arabic datasets. We make this framework available to researchers and data scientists who work with such datasets to be aware of the properties of the datasets and consider them in their work.

Disfluency characteristics of Omani Arabic-English bilingual speakers

This study examined the oral reading and conversational speech of eight bilinguals who stutter (BWS). The participants spoke Omani Arabic as the dominant and English as the less-dominant language. The samples were examined with particular reference to the production of overall disfluency, stuttering-like disfluencies (SLDs) and other-disfluencies (ODs) occurring at the syllable and word level. The results indicated no difference in the amount of overall disfluency or ODs between the two languages in either reading or conversation. A significantly higher amount of SLDs were found to occur in words during reading in Arabic compared to English, which was attributed to the linguistic complexity of formal Arabic. A higher amount of SLDs in syllables were found in English compared to Arabic during conversation, although no such difference was found at the word level. The results align with a small body of research suggesting equivalent amounts of stuttering between dominant and less-dominant languages during conversation. The finding of a higher amount of stuttering during reading in Arabic is suggestive of motor differences in the production of the two languages that differentially affect speech fluency.

Participant Perceptions of a Free Fresh Produce Market at a Health Center

OBJECTIVE

To examine participant perceptions of a free, monthly produce market at a health center in Massachusetts.

DESIGN

Participants were recruited at a produce market between June 2019 and January 2020 and engaged in a 30-65-minute focus group (n = 3 English language; n = 2 Spanish; n = 2 Arabic) conducted by trained facilitators using a semistructured guide.

PARTICIPANTS

Adults (n = 49) who had attended the market at least twice in the previous 6 months.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Participant-reported facilitators, barriers, perceived benefits, and opportunities for improvement.

ANALYSIS

Conventional content analysis.

RESULTS

Reported facilitators included accessibility (eg, convenient location and timing), program experience (eg, positive volunteer interactions), and characteristics of goods and services (eg, acceptable variety of produce). Barriers fell under similar themes and included transportation challenges, poor weather, and insufficient quantity of produce for larger households. Participants perceived the market as improving diet and finances and offered suggestions for improvement: distributing nonproduce foods (eg, meat) or nonfood items (eg, toiletries) and augmenting existing initiatives aimed to help attendees make use of the produce (eg, handing out recipe cards).

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

The produce market was widely accepted, and targeted areas for improvement were identified. Findings may improve existing and future charitable produce markets among diverse populations.

Rapid mental health screening in conflict zones: a translation and cross-cultural adaptation into Arabic of the shortened Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS-25)

Background

During conflict, children and adolescents are at increased risk of mental health problems and in particular, anxiety and depression. However, mental health screening in conflict settings is problematic and carries risk making the need for fast, easy-to-administer, screening instruments paramount. The shortened version of the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS-25) is one method of rapidly assessing anxiety and depressive symptoms in youths. This self-report questionnaire demonstrates good internal consistency and diagnostic capacity in clinical and non-clinical populations. Nevertheless, few studies have tested the psychometric properties of translated versions of the RCADS-25 limiting its applicability worldwide.

Objectives

To expand the reach and utility of the RCADS-25, the present study sought to develop an Arabic version of the instrument (RCADS25-Arabic) and to explore its reliability and underlying factor structure. In light of changes to DSM classification, the effects of removing indicator variables for obsessive-compulsive disorder on the psychometrics of the RCADS25-Arabic were also explored.

Method

The scale was back translated into Modern Standard Arabic and administered to 250 Arabic speaking schoolchildren between 8 and 15 years of age in Syria. Mean and standard deviation were used to characterise the sample and summarize scores. The reliability and factor structure of the RCADS25-Arabic was explored using confirmatory factor analysis.

Results

Females were 127 and mean age was 12.11 ± SD 2.35. Males scored lower on anxiety (M 15.05 SD ± 8.0, t(248) = − 3.15, p = .003, d = 0.39) and internalizing factors (M 26.1 SD ± 13.1, t(248) = − 2.36, p = .0160, d = 0.31) with no statistical gender difference recorded for depression (t(248) = − 1.27, p = .202). Fit statistics were good for two- and one-factor solutions (χ²/df = 1.65, RMSEA 0.051, CFI .91, TLI .90 and χ²/df = 1.64 and RMSEA 0.051, CFI .91 and TLI .89 respectively). DIFFTEST showed no significant difference between models (χ²_diff (1) = 0.03, p < 0.86) indicating a one-factor (internalizing) solution was preferable. No improvement in scale integrity was found after deleting obsessive-compulsive disorder items.

Conclusion

The RCADS25-Arabic is useful for rapid screening of depression and anxiety but is better used to identify a one-factor internalizing construct. Obsessive-compulsive disorder items should be retained in the RCADS-25.
