Abstract
Twenty-four finishing pigs (twelve Iberian and twelve Landrace) were used in a growing and slaughtering experiment. Animals were fed two diets differing in their ingredients, maize (diet C) or sorghum-acorn (diet A). At an average weight of 107.0 kg pigs were slaughtered and hindgut digesta sampled to study the effect of breed and diet on large bowel fermentation. Flows of digesta to the hindgut compartment were estimated based on an indigestible flow marker (Cr2O3) and were higher in Iberian than in Landrace pigs (P<0.001), and higher in animals fed diet A than diet C (P=0.07). The higher flows in Iberian pigs were mainly associated with a higher voluntary feed intake (3.50 v. 2.70 kg/d, P<0.01) and lower ileal digestibility of NSP (-12.8 v. 47.8, P<0.01). Differences between diets were mainly associated with a lower ileal digestibility of starch from diet A (89.2 v. 96.9 %, P=0.06), although no differences in the resistant starch content were observed in vitro. Fermentation of different carbohydrates through the large bowel showed that NSP-glucose had lower digestibility in Iberian than in Landrace pigs (62.5 v. 94.2 %, P<0.001), but no differences were observed in starch, or other NSP-fibre fractions (arabinose, xylose and galactose). The type and amount of carbohydrates reaching the large bowel were related to the diet but also to breed, and promoted differences in the fermentative activity associated with different volatile fatty acid patterns and changes in microbial enzymic activity.

Abstract
Cuentepec is a rural village of central Mexico, where 1300 pigs were bred at the time of the study in conditions that favor Taenia solium transmission. The tongues of 1087 (84%) of these pigs were visually examined and 33% were found to be cysticercotic. Castration of male pigs increased prevalence from 23 to 50% (P < 0.001) and pregnancy in sows also increased their prevalence from 28 to 59% (P < 0.001). Thus, endocrinological conditions characterized by low levels of androgens or high levels of female hormones probably influence the susceptibility of pigs to T. solium cysticercosis as observed in mice infected with Taenia crassiceps. Delaying castration of male pigs and confinement of sows during pregnancy might significantly decrease the prevalence of pig-cysticercosis and help curb transmission without much cost or difficulty.

Abstract
PURPOSE We present the clinical, genetic and histopathologic findings in two siblings with Muscle-Eye-Brain Disease (MEB-D), an autosomal recessive disease characterized by mental retardation, muscular dystrophy, retinal hypoplasia and brain abnormalities. METHODS Clinical, histopathologic and gene mapping studies of a family with two normal and two children with MEB-D. RESULTS Two siblings presented in the first few months of life with developmental delay, hypotonia, and strabismus. MRI of the brain showed colpocephaly, pontine and cerebellar atrophy, and diffuse white matter disease. Both patients were blind and had high myopia, strabismus, and retinal and optic nerve abnormalities. The older boy had glaucoma. Both children died from uncontrolled seizures. There was retinal, choroidal and RPE atrophy and optic nerve hypoplasia on ocular histopathology. Both patients shared the same parental haplotypes at the MEB locus on chromosome 1p, while an unaffected sibling did not, indicating possible linkage to the MEB locus. CONCLUSIONS Patients with MEB-D have severe visual impairment from retinal and optic nerve hypoplasia. High myopia appears to be a consistent finding. The ocular manifestations of MEB-D appear to be distinct from those of patients with Walker-Warburg syndrome.

Abstract
Mental retardation is a pervasive societal problem, 25 times more common than blindness for example. Fragile X syndrome, the most common form of inherited mental retardation, is caused by mutations in the FMR1 gene. Fragile X patients display neurite morphology defects in the brain, suggesting that this may be the basis of their mental retardation. Drosophila contains a single homolog of FMR1, dfxr (also called dfmr1). We analyzed the role of dfxr in neurite development in three distinct neuronal classes. We find that DFXR is required for normal neurite extension, guidance, and branching. dfxr mutants also display strong eclosion failure and circadian rhythm defects. Interestingly, distinct neuronal cell types show different phenotypes, suggesting that dfxr differentially regulates diverse targets in the brain.

Abstract
We calculate the energy and condensate fraction for a dense system of bosons interacting through an attractive short range interaction with positive s-wave scattering length a. At high densities n>>a(-3), the energy per particle, chemical potential, and square of the sound speed are independent of the scattering length and proportional to n(2/3), as in Fermi systems. The condensate is quenched at densities na(3) approximately 1.

Abstract
Whole ungutted pota and octopus were stored in bulk in stainless steel refrigerated containers under controlled atmospheres. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of this treatment, physicochemical tests (pH, trimethylamine nitrogen, total volatile basic nitrogen, 2-thiobarbituric acid) and sensory assessments (inspection) were done. For both pota and octopus, the control lot had the highest physicochemical values and the lowest sensory values, and of the two assayed atmospheres, the 60/15/25% atmosphere (CO2/O2/N2) had the best physicochemical results. pH, trimethylamine nitrogen, and total volatile basic nitrogen levels were lower (P < or = 0.05) in octopus than in pota, and the inspection results were significantly (P < or = 0.05) higher. However, the octopus had a higher 2-thiobarbituric acid index than the pota. Therefore, the application of controlled atmospheres on these cephalopods during chilled bulk storage considerably increases their shelf life.

Abstract
To examine human leukocyte antigen (HLA) involvement in the development of all grades of cervical neoplasia, a nested case-control study of 10,077 women in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, was conducted. Participants had invasive cervical cancer, high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs; n=166), or low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSILs); were positive for human papillomavirus (HPV) with no evidence of cervical neoplasia (n=320); or were HPV negative with no evidence of cervical neoplasia but with a history of high-risk sexual behavior (n=173). Compared with women who were HPV negative, women with HLA-DRB1*1301 were associated with decreased risk for cancer/HSILs (odds ratio [OR], 0.4; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.2-0.7) and for LSILs/HPV (OR, 0.6; 95% CI, 0.3-0.9). Women with both HLA-B*07 and HLA-DQB1*0302 had an 8.2-fold increased risk for cancer/HSILs (95% CI, 1.8-37.2) and a 5.3-fold increased risk for LSILs/HPV (95% CI, 1.2-23.7). These results support the hypothesis that multiple risk alleles are needed in order to increase risk for cervical neoplasia, but a single protective allele may be sufficient for protection.

Abstract
Previous reports of genital conditions, such as nonspecific genital infection/sore or vaginal discharge associated with cervical cancer (L. A. Brinton et al., J. Natl. Cancer Inst. (Bethesda), 79: 23-30, 1987; C. J. Jones et al., Cancer Res., 50: 3657-3662, 1990), suggest a possible link between either genital tract inflammation or changes in bacteria flora consistent with bacterial vaginosis (BV) and cervical cancer. To test whether changes in vaginal bacterial flora or the degree of cervical inflammation are associated with women having a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection or with women infected with oncogenic HPV having high-grade cervical lesions (high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions or cancer), we conducted a case-control study of women <50 years old enrolled in the Costa Rican natural history study of HPV and cervical neoplasia. To test whether BV and inflammation were associated with HPV DNA positivity, Analysis 1 was restricted to women with no or mild (low-grade or equivocal) cytological abnormalities, and the degree of inflammation and Nugent score (a measure of BV) were compared between women infected (n = 220) and not infected (n = 130) with HPV. To test whether BV and inflammation were associated with high-grade lesions, Analysis 2 was restricted to women infected with oncogenic HPV, and the degree of inflammation and Nugent score were compared between women with (n = 95) and without (n = 158) high-grade cervical lesions. In Analysis 1, BV and cervical inflammation were not associated with HPV infection. In Analysis 2, BV was not associated with high-grade lesions. However, we found a marginally significant positive trend of increasing cervical inflammation associated with high-grade lesions in oncogenic HPV-infected women, (P(trend) = 0.05). Overt cervicitis was associated with a 1.9-fold increase in risk of high-grade lesions (95% confidence interval, 0.90-4.1). The results of this study suggest that cervical inflammation may be associated with high-grade lesions and may be a cofactor for high-grade cervical lesions in women infected with oncogenic HPV.

Abstract
Little is known about the mechanism of hepatitis C virion assembly. So the capacity of the entire Hepatitis C virus core protein (HCcAg) produced in Pichia pastoris to form particles either in its native soluble state or after detergent treatment of HCcAg associated to cell debris were studied. Size exclusion chromatography suggested that HCcAg assembled into high molecular weight structures. HCcAg was also specifically recognized by a serum from a chronic HCV carrier patient. This antigen migrated with buoyant density values similar to those obtained for native nucleocapsid particles from infected patients when analyzed using sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The analysis by electron microscopy of purified HCcAg showed aggregates resembling virus-like particles (VLPs) with an average diameter of 30 nm. These results indicated that the HCcAg obtained from P. pastoris assembled into VLPs resembling HCV nucleocapsid particles in a mature stage. Such HCcAg aggregates characterized here could be a valuable tool to elucidate the mechanisms of HCV nucleocapsid assembly.
