Abstract
The reactivity of sodium phosphaethynolate Na(OCP) towards various Mayr's reference electrophiles was investigated using conventional UV-visible and laser-flash photolysis techniques. The kinetic data, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, enabled the first experimental quantification of the phosphorus nucleophilicity of [OCP]-. Product studies of these reactions demonstrate the formation of secondary as well as tertiary phosphines. The mechanism of this unprecedented phosphorus-atom transfer reaction is thoroughly discussed, with key intermediates successfully isolated and characterized. Importantly, some bulky secondary phosphine oxides synthesized using this approach, have demonstrated high efficiency as ligands in the Suzuki coupling reaction.

Abstract
Nitroso compounds, R-N=O, are common intermediates in organic synthesis, and are typically amenable to storage and manipulation at ambient temperature under aerobic conditions. By contrast, phosphorus-containing analogues, such as R-P=O (R = OH, CH3, OCH3, Ph), are extremely reactive and need to be studied in inert gas matrices at ultralow temperatures (3-15 K). These species are believed to be key intermediates in the degradation/combustion of organic phosphorus compounds, a class of chemicals that includes chemical warfare agents and flame retardants. Here we describe the isolation of a two-coordinate phosphorus(III) oxide under ambient conditions, enabled by the use of an extremely bulky amine ligand. Reactivity studies reveal that the phosphorus centre can be readily oxidized, and that in doing so, the P-O bond remains intact, an observation that is of interest to the proposed reactivity of transient phosphorus(III) oxides.

Abstract
Carbonyl nitrenes are versatile intermediates that have been extensively characterized; however, their phosphorus analogues remain largely unknown. Herein, we report the observation of a rare example of carbonyl phosphinidene NH2C(O)P, which was generated through the photolytic (193 nm) dehydrogenation of phosphinecarboxamide (NH2C(O)PH2) in a solid N2-matrix at 12 K. The characterization of NH2C(O)P in the triplet ground state with matrix-isolation IR and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy is supported by comprehensive isotope labeling experiments (D and 15N) and quantum chemical calculations. Upon visible-light irradiation at 680 nm, NH2C(O)P inserts into dihydrogen by the reformation of NH2C(O)PH2 with concomitant isomerization to the more stable aminophosphaketene (NH2PCO). Additionally, the photoisomerization of NH2C(O)PH2 to NH2C(OH) = PH along with decomposition by yielding hydrogen-bonded complexes HNCO···PH3 and HPCO···NH3 has been observed in the matrix.

Abstract
The diatomic molecule PH is very reactive, and it serves as the parent compound for phosphinidenes featuring a monovalent phosphorus atom. Herein, we report the characterization and reactivity of a rare hydrogen-bonded complex of PH. Specifically, the molecular complex between PH and HCl has been generated by photolysis of chlorophosphine (H2PCl) at 254 nm in a solid Ar-matrix at 10 K. The IR spectrum of the complex HP⋅⋅⋅HCl and quantum chemical calculations at the UCCSD(T)-F12a/haTZ level consistently prove that the phosphorus atom acts as a hydrogen bond acceptor with a binding energy (D0) of -0.6 kcal mol-1. In line with the observed absorption at 341 nm for the binary complex, the triplet phosphinidene PH undergoes prototype H-Cl bond insertion by reformation of H2PCl upon photoexcitation at 365 nm. However, this hydrogen-bonded complex is unstable in the presence of N2 and HCl, as both molecules prefers stronger interactions with HCl than PH in the observed complexes HP⋅⋅⋅HCl⋅⋅⋅N2 and HP⋅⋅⋅2HCl.

Abstract
Herein, we describe the synthesis of a 1,2σ3λ3-oxaphosphetane from ethylene oxide and its reactions with alkyl halides to form β-halo phosphane oxides in an Arbuzov-type reaction. When methyl triflate was used as a hard electrophile, cationic oligomerisation of 1,2-oxaphosphetanes was observed. DFT calculations indicate 1,2-oxaphosphetan-2-iums as intermediates and reveal differences between the Arbuzov and the potential Perkow reaction pathway.

Abstract
Phosphinidenes are heavy congeners of nitrenes that have been broadly used as in situ reagents in synthetic phosphorus chemistry and also serve as versatile ligands in coordination with transition metals. However, the detection of free phosphinidenes is largely challenged by their high reactivity and also the lack of suitable synthetic methods, rendering the knowledge about the fundamental properties of this class of low-valent phosphorus compounds limited. Recently, an increasing number of free phosphinidenes bearing prototype structural and bonding properties have been prepared for the first time, thus enabling the exploration of their distinct reactivity from the nitrene analogues. This Concept article will discuss the experimental approaches for the generation of the highly unstable phosphinidenes and highlight their distinct reactivity from the nitrogen analogues so as to stimuate future studies about their potential applications in phosphorus chemistry.

Abstract
Phosphaketenes of divalent group 14 compounds can potentially serve as precursors for the synthesis of heavy multiple-bond systems. We have employed the dtbp Cbz substituent (dtbp Cbz=1,8-bis(3,5-ditertbutylphenyl)-3,6-ditertbutylcarbazolyl) to prepare such phosphaketenyltetrylenes [(dtbp Cbz)EPCO] (E=Ge, Sn, Pb). While the phosphaketenyltetrylenes are stable at ambient conditions, they can be readily decarbonylated photolytically. For the germylene and stannylene derivatives, dimeric diphosphene-type products [(dtbp Cbz)EP]2 (E=Ge, Sn) were obtained. In contrast, photolysis of the phosphaketenylplumbylene, via isomerisation of the [(dtbp Cbz)PbP] intermediate to [(dtbp Cbz)PPb], afforded an unsymmetric and incompletely decarbonylated product [(dtbp Cbz)2 Pb2 P2 CO] formally comprising a [(dtbp Cbz)PPb] and a [(dtbp Cbz)PbPCO] moiety.

Abstract
The reaction of the stannyl phosphaketene (Nacnac)SnPCO 1 (Nacnac = CH{(CMe)(2,6-iPr2C6H3N)}2) with B(C6F5)3 produced the 1,4-addition product of (Nacnac)SnPCO(B(C6F5)3). However, the corresponding reactions in the presence of dimethyl maleate, diisopropyl fumarate or diethyl-but-2-ynedioate gave [2+2] addition yielding four-membered phosphacycles, ((Nacnac)Sn(MeO2C))CHPC(OB(C6F5)3)CH(CO2Me), [(C6F5)3B)PC(OSn)C(CO2Me)CH(CO2Me)]2, (Nacnac)Sn(iPrO2C)CC(OAl(C6F5)3)P[CH(CO2iPr)CH2(CO2iPr)]CH(CO2iPr), and (Nacnac)SnP (EtO2CCC(CO2Et))CO(B(C6F5)3), respectively. In contrast, the corresponding reaction of phenylacetylene gave the FLP-addition product (Nacnac)SnOC(P)C(Ph)CH(B(C6F5)3). Collectively, this reactivity demonstrates that the stannyl phosphaketene 1 can act as a synthon for P-analogues of β-lactam derivatives.

Abstract
The simplest diphosphene HPPH and isomeric diphosphinyldene PPH2 features prototype phosphorus-phosphorus multiple bonding properties that have been of long-standing interest in main-group chemistry. Herein, we report the observation of cis-HPPH, trans-HPPH, and PPH2 among the respective laser photolysis products of phosphine (PH3 ) and diphosphine (P2 H4 ) in solid N2 - and Ar-matrices at 10 K. The identification of these P2 H2 isomers with matrix-isolation IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy is supported by D-isotope labeling and the quantum chemical calculations at the CCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVTZ-F12 level using configuration-selective vibrational configuration interaction theory (VCI). Bonding analyses suggest that the two conformers of HPPH contain standard PP double bonds, whereas, PPH2 resembles P2 in having partial PP triple bond due to the H2 P←P π bonding interaction.

Abstract
We report phosphinidenes (PR) stabilized by an intramolecular frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chelate. These adducts include the parent phosphinidene, PH, which is accessed via thermolysis of coordinated HPCO. The reported FLP-PH species acts as a springboard to other phosphorus-containing compounds, such as FLP-adducts of diphosphorus (P2 ) and InP3 . Our new adducts participate in thermal- or light-induced phosphinidene elimination (of both PH and PR, R=organic group), transfer P2 units to an organic substrate, and yield the useful semiconductor InP at only 110 °C from solution.

Abstract
Diazophosphane HPN2, a heavy analogue of hydrazoic acid (HN3), has been synthesized at low temperature (10 K) through photolytic reactions of molecular nitrogen (N2) with phosphine (PH3) and phosphaketene (HPCO) under irradiations at 193 and 365 nm, respectively. The characterization of HPN2 and its isotopologues DPN2 and HP15N2 by matrix-isolation IR and UV-vis spectroscopy is supported by quantum chemical calculations at the CCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVTZ-F12 level of theory. Upon irradiation at 266 nm, the P-N bond in HPN2 breaks, whereas its photolysis at 193 nm generates the elusive phosphinyl radical •PN2.

Abstract
Although 1,2σ5λ5-oxaphosphetanes have been known for a long time, the “low-coordinate” 1,2σ3λ3-oxaphosphetanes have only been known since their first synthesis in 2018 via decomplexation. Apart from ligation of this P-heterocycle to gold(I)chloride and the oxidation using ortho-chloranil, nothing on their chemistry has been reported so far. Herein, we describe the synthesis of new 1,2σ3λ3-oxaphosphetane complexes (3a–e) and free derivatives (4a–e), as well as reactions of 4a with chalcogens and/or chalcogen transfer reagents, which yielded the P-chalcogenides (14–16a; Ch = O, S, Se). We also report on the theoretical results of the reaction pathways of C-phenyl-substituted 1,2 σ3λ3-oxaphosphetanes and ring strain energies of 1,2σ4λ5-oxaphosphetane P-chalcogenides.

Abstract
The highly elusive isocyanatoborane radical HBNCO has been generated by the reaction of laser-ablated boron atoms with HNCO and also by the light-induced chemical transformation of the hydrogen-bonded molecule-radical complex BNH···CO in solid neon matrix. IR spectroscopic and theoretical studies indicate that the HBNCO radical possesses a quasilinear B═N═C═O heterocumulenic structure with the unpaired electron mainly located at the boron atom. This is in sharp contrast to the bonding properties of the isoelectronic analogues HCCCO and NCCO, in which the unpaired electron is located at the terminal CO moiety.

Abstract
Over the past decade, the reactivity of 2-phosphaethynolate (OCP-), a heavier analogue of the cyanate anion, has been the subject of momentous interest in the field of modern organometallic chemistry. It is used as a precursor to novel phosphorus-containing heterocycles and as a ligand in decarbonylative processes, serving as a synthetic equivalent of a phosphinidene derivative. This perspective aims to describe advances in the reactivities of phosphaethynolate and arsaethynolate anions (OCE-; E = P, As) with main-group element, transition metal, and f-block metal scaffolds. Further, the unique structures and bonding properties are discussed based on spectroscopic and theoretical studies.

Abstract
The vibrational spectra of the simplest phosphaketene HPCO and its isotopologue DPCO in solid Ar-matrices at 12.0 K have been analyzed with the aid of the computations at the CCSD(T)-F12a/cc-pVTZ-F12 level using configuration-selective vibrational configuration interaction (VCI). In addition to the four IR fundamentals, four overtone and ten combination bands have been unambiguously identified. Furthermore, the photochemistry of HPCO in the matrix has been investigated for the first time. Upon UV-light irradiation (365 or 266 nm), CO-elimination occurs by forming the parent phosphinidene HP that can be trapped by ˙NO to yield the elusive phosphinimine-N-oxyl radical HPNO˙. In contrast, an excimer laser (193 nm) irradiation of HPCO causes additional decomposition to H˙ and ˙PCO with concomitant formation of the long-sought phosphaethyne HOCP.

Abstract
Primary acyl-phosphines are scarce in the literature. Here we show that the reaction of Ph3 GePCO with the ylide Ph3 PCH2 proceeds to give the species Ph3 PCHC(O)PH(GePh3 ) 1. Deprotonation of 1 with Na[N(SiMe3 )2 ] generates the salt [Na(THF)2 ][Ph3 PCHC(O)P(GePh3 )] 2 which provides subsequent access to the bis-germanylated acylphosphine, Ph3 PCHC(O)P(GePh3 )2 3. Alternatively, treatment of 1 with HCl in dioxane affords the primary acylphosphine Ph3 PCHC(O)PH2 4. Compound 4 is a rare example of an air stable primary acyl-phosphines and the first devoid of a stabilizing heteroatom adjacent to the carbonyl fragment.

Abstract
We describe the synthesis of N-functionalised phosphinecarboxamides obtained by reaction of the 2-phosphaethynolate anion (PCO-) with diamines, specifically hydrazine, methylenediamine and ethylenediamine, in the presence of acid. The resulting neutral compounds can be deprotonated to generate phosphide anions that, when further reacted with electrophiles, form secondary phosphines.

Abstract
Six monosolvated cyanate analogue clusters ECX-·Sol (ECX- = NCSe-, AsCSe-, and AsCS-; Sol = H2O and CH3CN) were investigated using negative ion photoelectron spectroscopy (NIPES). NIPES experiments show that these clusters possess similar spectra overall compared to their respective isolated ECX- anions but shift to higher electron binding energy with CH3CN solvent, stabilizing the excess electrons slightly more than H2O. For the ECX-·H2O series, vertical detachment energies and their increments relative to the bare species are measured to be 3.700/0.370, 3.085/0.415, and 3.085/0.430 eV for NCSe-, AsCSe- and AsCS-, respectively, while the corresponding values in the ECX-·CH3CN series are 3.835/0.505, 3.145/0.475, and 3.135/0.480 eV. Ab initio electronic structure calculations indicate that the excess charges were located at the terminal N and Se atoms in NCSe- and migrated to the central C atom in AsCSe- and AsCS-. For NCSe-, the solvation is driven by the interactions with the two negatively charged terminal ends, while for AsCSe- and AsCS-, the solvation revolves around the interactions with the central C atom, where all the excess negative charge is concentrated. Two nearly degenerate isomers for NCSe-·H2O are identified, one forming a single strong N···H-O hydrogen bond (HB) and the other featuring a bidentate HB with two hydroxyl H atoms pointing to N and Se ends. In contrast, the negative central C atom in AsCSe-/AsCS- allows the formation of a bifurcated HB with H2O. Similar effects are observed for the acetonitrile case, in which the three H atoms of the methyl group interact with the two negatively charged terminal ends in NCSe-, while preferring to bind to the central negative carbon atom in AsCSe-/AsCS-. The different binding motifs derived in this work may suggest different solvation properties in NCSe- versus AsCSe-/AsCS- with the former anion leading to asymmetric solvation at the N end of the solute, while the latter species creates more "isotropic" solvation around the central C equatorial plane.

Abstract
We present a new adduct of carbon dioxide with dihydrogenphosphide, that may be prepared either by direct reaction of NaPH2 with carbon dioxide or by hydrolysis of the phosphaethynolate ion (PCO- ). In this hydrolysis transformation, a new mechanism is proposed for the electrophilic reactivity of the phosphaethynolate ion. Protonation to form phosphine carboxylic acid (PH2 COOH) and functionalization to form esters is shown to increase the strength of the P-C interaction, allowing for comparisons to be drawn between this species and the analogous carbamic (NH2 COOH) and carbonic acids (H2 CO3 ). Functionalization of the oxygen atom is found to stabilize the phosphine carboxylate while also allowing solubility in organic solvents whereas phosphorus functionalization is shown to facilitate decarboxylation. Substituent migration occurs in some cases.

Abstract
The trapping of classical hydrogen pseudohalides (HX, X = pseudohalogen = CN, N3, NCO, NCS, and PCO) utilizing a phosphorus-centered cyclic biradicaloid, [P(μ-NTer)]2, is reported. These formal Brønsted acids were generated in situ as gases and passed over the trapping reagent, the biradicaloid [P(μ-NTer)]2, leading to the formation of the addition product [HP(μ-NTer)2PX] (successful for X = CN, N3, and NCO). In addition to this direct addition reaction, a two-step procedure was also applied because we failed in isolating HPCO and HNCS addition products. This two-step process comprises the generation and isolation of the highly reactive [HP(μ-NTer)2PX]+ cation as a [B(C6F5)4]- salt, followed by salt metathesis with salts such as [cat]X (cat = PPh4, n-Bu3NMe), which also gives the desired [HP(μ-NTer)2PX] product, with the exception of the reaction with the PCO- salt. In this case, proton migration was observed, finally affording the formation of a [3.1.1]-hetero-propellane-type cage compound, an OC(H)P isomer of a HPCO adduct. All discussed species were fully characterized.

Abstract
In the presence of μ-nitridobis(triphenylphosphonium) cation, [PPN]+, it was possible to stabilize and isolate [PPN]+-salts bearing the highly labile hydrogen cyanide aggregate anions of pseudohalides X (X = N3, OCN and SCN). From a concentrated solution of the [PPN]X salts in HCN, crystals of [PPN][X(HCN)3] (X = N3, OCN) or [PPN][SCN(HCN)2] could be obtained, when the crystallization was carried out fast and at low temperatures. The reaction of liquid HCN with the PCO- salt led to formation of dicyanophosphide, which crystallized as HCN disolvate [P(CN·HCN)2]-. All synthesized salts with hydrogen-bridged pseudohalide solvate anions are thermally unstable. Immediate loss of HCN was observed in the crystals outside the HCN solution. Oligomerization begins at ambient temperature, even in HCN solution. All discussed species were characterized by means of Raman spectroscopy, single crystal X-ray analysis and quantum-chemical calculations.

Abstract
Reactions of Ph3GePCO with KP(t-Bu)2 and Ph3SiCl, or direct reaction with Ph3SiP(t-Bu)2 provides the (Z)- and (E)-isomers of the phosphaalkene (t-Bu2)PC(OSiPh3)P(GePh3) 2, respectively. These isomers interconvert thermally and photochemically, while 2 also undergoes silyl and phosphide exchange with silylphosphines, consistent with a mechanism involving the reversible silylphosphination of Ph3GePCO.

Abstract
The phosphaketene Ph3 GePCO is shown to react with the phosphide KP(tBu)2 to generate the anion [Ph3 GePC(O)P(tBu)2 ]- 1. This species reacts with CH3 I or ClGePh3 to give the dissymmetric diphospha-ureas (tBu)2 PC(O)P(GePh3 )(CH3 ) 2 and (Ph3 Ge)2 PC(O)P(tBu)2 3 respectively. Sequential treatment of 2 with a base and CH3 I affords a route to (tBu)2 PC(O)P(CH3 )2 5. These species are products of the first modular diphospha-urea synthesis. The subsequent thermal and photochemical reactivity of these species was also probed and described.

Abstract
When [PPN]SCN (1; PPN = [Ph3P-N-PPh3]) is treated with Me3Si-SCN in methanol, [PPN][H(NCS)2] (2), a hydrogen diisothiocyanate salt bearing the [H(NCS)2]- anion, was generated, isolated, and fully characterized. Pure heavy E(NCS)3 [E = Sb (3), Bi (4)] species were obtained from the reaction of EF3 and an excess of Me3Si-SCN, while the tetrahydrofuran (THF) solvates E(NCS)3·THF were isolated when the product was recrystallized from THF. When 2 equiv of 1 was combined with Me3Si-SCN and SbF3, [PPN]2[Sb(NCS)5] (5) could be isolated. When 1 was added to BiF3, [PPN]2[Bi(NCS)3(SCN)2·THF] (6·THF), containing three SCN- ions coordinating via the N atom and two coordinating via the S atom, was isolated after recrystallization from THF. The structures of 1, 2, 3·THF, 4·THF, 5, and 6·THF were determined. 3·THF displayed a typical [3 + 3] coordination mode with a trigonal-pyramidal environment in the first coordination sphere of the Sb3+ ion, and the dianion of 5, [Sb(NCS)5]2-, featured a classical square-pyramidal molecular geometry around the Sb3+ ion with one additional Menshutkin-type interaction to one aryl ring of the [PPN]+ cation. 4·THF exhibited a distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal structure within a two-dimensional network, while in 6·THF, an octahedrally surrounded Bi3+ ion was observed.

Abstract
After many decades of intense research in low-coordinate phosphorus chemistry, the advent of Na[OCP] brought new stimuli to the field of CHOP isomers and derivatives thereof. The present theoretical study at the CCSD(T)/def2-TZVPP level describes the chemical space of CHOP isomers in terms of structures and potential energy surfaces, using oxaphosphirene as the starting point, but also covering substituted derivatives and COP- isomers. Bonding properties of the P⁻C, P⁻O, and C⁻O bonds in all neutral and anionic isomeric species are discussed on the basis of theoretical calculations using various bond strengths descriptors such as WBI and MBO, but also the Lagrangian kinetic energy density per electron as well as relaxed force constants. Ring strain energies of the superstrained 1H-oxaphosphirene and its barely strained oxaphosphirane-3-ylidene isomer were comparatively evaluated with homodesmotic and hyperhomodesmotic reactions. Furthermore, first time calculation of the ring strain energy of an anionic ring is described for the case of oxaphosphirenide.

Abstract
Here we report the photochemical reactions of triplet phenylphosphinidene with carbon monoxide and nitric oxide. The photolysis of phenylphosphirane in carbon monoxide-doped matrices enabled the first spectroscopic identification of phenylphosphaketene, the hitherto unreported phosphorus analogue of phenyl isocyanate. The hitherto undisclosed phosphinimine-N-oxyl radical formed upon UV irradiation of the phenylphosphinidene with nitric oxide in argon matrices at 10 K.

Abstract
In all likelihood the first synthesis of the phosphaethynolate anion, PCO- , was performed in 1894 when NaPH2 was reacted with CO in an attempt to make Na(CP) accompanied by elimination of water. This reaction was repeated 117 years later when it was discovered that Na(OCP) and H2 are the products of this remarkable transformation. Li(OCP) was synthesized and fully characterized in 1992 but this salt proved to be too unstable to allow for a detailed investigation of its chemistry. It was not until the heavier analogues of this lithium salt were isolated, Na(OCP) and K(OCP) (both of which are remarkably stable and can be even dissolved in water), that the chemistry of this new functional group could be explored. Here we review the chemistry of the 2-phosphaethynolate anion, a heavier phosphorus-containing analogue of the cyanate anion, and describe the wide breadth of chemical transformations for which it has been thus far employed. Its use as a ligand, in decarbonylative and deoxygenative processes, and as a building block for novel heterocycles is described. In the mere twenty-six years since Becker first reported the isolation of this remarkable anion, it has become a fascinating reagent for the synthesis of a vast library of, often unprecedented, molecules and compounds.

Abstract
The neutral PCO derivative Ph3GePCO undergoes addition of borohydride to generate the anion [Ph3GePC(H)OBPh3]-. A subsequent deprotection strategy provides access to the monomethyl and dimethylformyl phosphines, Ph3GeP(Me)C(H)O and Me2PC(H)O, respectively. The latter species which is the phosphorus analogue of DMF, was characterized and shown to complex via phosphorus to Ru. A computational study also highlights the similarities and differences between the P- and N-containing molecules.

Abstract
Cyclic PON, a first 16-electron triatomic ring consisting of two first-row elements, has been generated through 193 nm laser photolysis of OPN in cryogenic matrices. When the photolysis (365 nm) was performed in the presence of CO, OPN combines CO and furnishes an exotic acyclic molecule OPNCO. Upon the 193 nm laser irradiation, OPNCO dissociates mainly to OPN and CO with traces of PN and CO2 . The identification of cyclic PON and OPNCO with IR spectroscopy is supported by 15 N-labeling experiments and quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract
Over the course of the last six years, research on the synthesis and reactivity of molecular metal phosphaketenes (M-PCO) has gained increasing attention. However, lanthanide complexes of the heavier group 15 cyanate analogue PCO- have not been investigated so far. Herein we present exemplar studies on the nature and reactivity of rare-earth phosphaethynolato-complexes using three characteristic representatives of the rare-earth metals: Y, Nd and Sm. Our investigations comprise both +2 and +3 redox states, and one defined amidinate-based ligand set, as well as novel reaction pathways in the presence of the sequestering agents 18-crown-6 and 2,2,2-crypt.

Abstract
While 1,2σ5λ5-oxaphosphetanes are well known intermediates from the Wittig-reaction, no 1,2σ3λ3-oxaphosphetanes have been described, so far. Herein, we present the first synthesis of 1,2σ3λ3-oxaphosphetanes derived from their κP-Mo(CO)5 complexes and first investigations towards metal coordination and P-oxidation. Bonding, ring strain energy and potential retro-[2+2] cycloaddition reactions of the 1,2-oxaphosphetane ring were studied by DFT methods.

Abstract
Synthesis of a novel tricyclic 1,4-diphosphinine I and, subsequently, of a stable anionic 1,4-diphosphinine II is reported; while II can be used as precursor for 1,4-disubstitution products, its oxidation leads to the formation of the P–P coupling product III.

Abstract
The reactions of the phosphaethynolate anion ([PCO]- ) with a range of boranes were explored. BPh3 and [PCO]- form a dimeric anion featuring P-B bonds and is prone to dissociation at room temperature. The more Lewis acidic borane B(C6 F5 )3 yields a less symmetric dimer of [PCO]- with P-B and P-O bonds. Less sterically demanding HB(C6 F5 )2 and H2 B(C6 F5 ) boranes form a third isomer with [PCO]- featuring both boranes bound to the same phosphorus atom. Despite the unexpected thermodynamic preference for P-coordination, computational data illustrate that electronic and steric features impact the binding modes of the resulting dianionic dimers.
