Abstract
Lipoproteins are essential in removing lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from blood during bacterial inflammation. The physicochemical properties of lipoproteins and environmental factors can impact LPS uptake. In this work, synthetic lipid droplets containing triglycerides, cholesterols, and phospholipids, were prepared to mimic lipoproteins. The physicochemical properties of these lipid droplets, such as charges, sizes, and lipid compositions, were altered to understand the underlying factors affecting LPS uptake. The amphiphilic LPS could spontaneously adsorb on the surface of lipid droplets without lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP); however, the presence of LBP can increase LPS uptake. The positively charged lipid droplets also enhance the uptake of negatively charged LPS. Most interestingly, the LPS uptake highly depends on the concentrations of Ca2+ near the physiological conditions, but the impact of Mg2+ ions was not significant. The increase of Ca2+ ions can improve LPS uptake by lipid droplets; this result suggested that Ca2+ may play an essential role in LPS clearance. Since septic shock patients typically suffer from hypocalcemia and low levels of lipoproteins, the supplementation of Ca2+ ions along with synthetic lipoproteins may be a potential treatment for severe sepsis.

Abstract
This study aimed to optimize a novel green CEO nanoemulsions (CEO NEs) and explore its physicochemical properties and the effect on the shelf-life of strawberries during storage at environmental temperature (20-25 °C). We used CEO as oil phase and tea saponin (TS) as a natural surfactant to formulate the novel green CEO NEs, and its potential as an antimicrobial agent was also investigated. The results showed that CEO NEs had a droplet size about 170 nm with uniform distribution and regularly spherical. These CEO NEs exhibited excellent storage stability, thermal stability, pH stability and centrifugal stability. The antimicrobial test indicated that the minimal inhibitory concentration and the minimal bactericidal (fungicidal) concentration of CEO NEs against Escherichia coli, Botrytis cinerea and Aspergillus flavus were 17.81 μg/mL and 35.62 μg/mL, 35.62 μg/mL and 71.25 μg/mL, 2.23 μg/mL and 4.45 μg/mL, respectively, which were significantly lower than those of pure CEO (333.75 μg/mL and 667.5 μg/mL, 667.5 μg/mL and 1335 μg/mL, 41.72 μg/mL and 83.44 μg/mL). More interestingly, after soaking strawberries in CEO NEs for 2 min, the shelf-life of strawberries can be extended to 7 days at environmental temperature, and a lower rate of weight loss and mildew were showed in the group of CEO NEs than other control groups, especially the strawberries in ultrapure water group went bad first, obviously shranked, and contaminated by molds after 3 days. The above results indicate that CEO NEs prepared in this study has great potential as a new green antimicrobial agent in fruit preservation.

Abstract
This study investigated the influence of chitosan (CH) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (H), along with ultrasound power, on the physicochemical properties, antifungal activity, and stability of oil-in-water (O/W) nanoemulsions containing thymol and cinnamaldehyde in a 7:3 (v/v) ratio. Eight O/W formulations were prepared using CH, H, and a 1:1 (v/v) blend of CH and H, both with and without ultrasonication (U). Compared to untreated samples, U-treated nanoemulsions had lower droplet sizes (433-301 nm), polydispersity index (0.42-0.47), and zeta potential (-0.42-0.77 mV). The U treatment decreased L* and b* values, increased a* color attribute values, and increased apparent viscosity (0.26-2.17) at the same shear rate. After 28 days, microbiological testing of nanoemulsions treated with U showed counts below the detection limits (< 2 log CFU mL-1). The U-treated nanoemulsions exhibited stronger antifungal effects against R. stolonifer, with the NE/CH-U and NE/CH-H-U formulations demonstrating the lowest minimum inhibitory and fungicidal concentrations, measured at 0.12 and 0.24 μL/mL, respectively. On day 28, U-treated nanoemulsions demonstrated higher ionic, thermal, and physical stability than untreated samples. These findings suggest that the stability and antifungal efficacy of polysaccharide-based nanoemulsions may be improved by ultrasonic treatment. This study paves the way for innovative, highly stable nanoemulsions.

Abstract
According to data in the literature, natural products and essential oils are often used in dental practice. To develop a new oromucosal spray for the treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity, clove CO2 extract and essential oils of lavender and grapefruit were used as active pharmaceutical ingredients. Clove extract was obtained by the method of subcritical extraction from various raw materials, the choice of which was based on the yield of the CO2 extract and the study of its phytochemical and microbiological properties. Based on the results of microscopic and diffraction analyses, the rational time of ultrasonic exposure for the emulsion of active pharmaceutical ingredients was established. Mucoadhesive polymers were used as stabilizers of the two-phase system and prolongators. This article discusses the impact of the type and concentration of mucoadhesive polymers on the stability of the emulsion system; the viscous, textural, adhesive, and film characteristics of oromucosal spray; and the parameters determining sprayability.

Abstract
For the first time, ultrasonic emulsification was studied for cinnamon essential oil (CEO) Pickering emulsion, stabilized by cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) from rice straw. Sonication proved to be an effective method for emulsifying CEO, creating small emulsion droplets around 700 nm in size, with an even dispersion characterized through a low polydispersity index. The biomass-derived CNC exhibits high encapsulation efficiency (> 95 %) with varying CEO concentration (5-25 vol%), creating droplets with negative surface charge with limited aggregation of emulsions. Optimization through the Box Behnken design using response surface methodology provides a model for the interaction and effects of variables towards the formulation. Optimal condition was concluded to be at 11.47 vol% CEO, 0.84 wt/vol% CNC and at 6 sonication cycles. The optimized Pickering emulsions retain the antimicrobial properties of CEO, with a large inhibition zone and low MIC value of around 0.048 vol% CEO. DPPH inhibition assay indicates that the emulsification process enhances the antioxidation properties of cinnamon essential oil, expressed through a lower IC50 of 0.90 vol% CEO, in comparison to pure essential oil at 1.33 vol% CEO. Overall, this research proposes a novel approach towards using nanocellulose as carriers for essential oil with potential in a large variety of applications.

Abstract
The health benefits of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCn-3PUFA) intake have been well documented. However, currently, the consumption of oily fish (the richest dietary source of LCn-3PUFA) in the UK is far below the recommended level, and the low digestibility of LCn-3PUFA bulk oil-based supplements from triglyceride-based sources significantly impacts their bioavailability. LCn-3PUFA-rich microalgal oil offers a potential alternative for populations who do not consume oily fish, and nanoemulsions have the potential to increase LCn-3PUFA digestibility and bioavailability. The aims of this study were to produce stable algal oil-in-water nanoemulsions with ultrasonic technology to increase DHA digestibility, measured using an in vitro digestion model. A nanoemulsion of LCn-3PUFA algal oil was developed with 6% w/w emulsifiers: lecithin (LE) or an equal ratio of Tween 40 (3%) and lecithin (LTN) (3%), 50% w/w, algal oil and 44% w/w water using rotor-stator and ultrasound homogenization. The in vitro digestion experiments were conducted with a gastric and duodenal digestion model. The results showed the creation of nanoemulsions of LCn-3PUFA algal oils offers potentially significant increases in the bioavailability of DHA in the human body. The increase in digestibility can be attributed to the smaller particle size of the nanoemulsions, which allows for higher absorption in the digestive system. This showed that the creation of nanoemulsions of LCn-3PUFA algal oils offers a potentially significant increase in the bioavailability of DHA in the human body. The LE and LTN nanoemulsions had average droplet sizes of 0.340 ± 0.00 µm and 0.267 ± 0.00 µm, respectively, but the algal oil mix (sample created with same the components as the LTN nanoemulsion, hand mixed, not processed by rotor-stator and ultrasound homogenization) had an average droplet size of 73.6 ± 6.98 µm. The LTN algal oil nanoemulsion was stable in the gastric and duodenal phases without detectable destabilization; however, the LE nanoemulsion showed signs of oil phase separation in the gastric phase. Under the same conditions, the amount of DHA digested from the LTN nanoemulsion was 47.34 ± 3.14 mg/g, compared to 16.53 ± 0.45 mg/g from the algal oil mix, showing DHA digestibility from the LTN nanoemulsion was 2.86 times higher. The findings of this study contribute to the insight of in vitro DHA digestion under different conditions. The stability of the LTN nanoemulsion throughout digestion suggests it could be a promising delivery system for LCn-3PUFAs, such as DHA, in various food and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
This research investigated the synergic outcome of high intensity ultrasound (HIU) treatment and wet-dry combined aging (WDCA) on physiochemical characteristics and lipid oxidation during refrigerated storage to ameliorate pork meat's quality and shelf life. The CIE b* values, cooking loss (CL %), and pH of the HIU treated samples were higher than those of the control over the aging period. They were significantly (p<0.05) modified by the aging period and ultrasound (US) treatment. However, the released water (RW %) and moisture were not significantly influenced by US treatment (p>0.05). The Warner-Bratzler shear force of HIU-treated samples was lower over control values except in 7-14 d, and it showed a significant difference between control and US treatment according to the significance of HIU (p<0.05). The thiobarbituric acid reactive substance of HIU-treated samples was significantly higher (p<0.05) than control values over the aging period. These results suggested that HIU treatment and WDCA showed a synergistic effect of maximizing the tenderness, but lipid oxidation was higher than before ultrasonic treatment. In agreement with this, the most favorable approach would involve implementing wet aging for a period of two weeks followed by dry aging for a period not exceeding one week after the application of HIU.

Abstract
Nanotechnology is a captivating contemporary technology owing to its extensive range of potential applications. This study emphasizes nanomaterials, substances with a size <100 nm, offering better qualities than coarse particles. Nanoparticles have several advantages compared with conventional drug delivery methods, including enhanced bioavailability and a larger surface area because of their smaller particle size. These characteristics make the nanoparticles a viable clinical candidate. Controlled-release drug delivery systems and targeted drug delivery systems rely heavily on nanoparticles. Because traditional drug delivery methods fail to achieve targeted drug delivery, resulting in toxicity, low bioavailability, poor therapeutic outcomes, and so on, these drug nanoparticles excel in all these areas. Researchers are already interested in developing drug delivery systems such as niosomes, bilosomes, and dendrimers. Nanoemulsion is one of these technologies; nanoemulsions outperform traditional emulsions in terms of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. Nanoemulsion effectively surpasses the constraints of standard emulsions, primarily by offering enhanced bioavailability, reduced toxicity, improved absorption, and the potential to be used in targeted drug delivery or controlled-release drug delivery systems. This particular work explores several aspects of nanoemulsions, including their constituents, classification, techniques for preparation, criteria for assessment, commercial applications, and future prospects.

Abstract
Curation meat products involves multiple stages, including pre-curing processing (thawing, cleaning, and cutting), curing itself, and post-curing processing (freezing, and packaging). Ultrasound are nonthermal processing technology widely used in food industry. This technology is preferred because it reduces the damages caused by traditional processing techniques on food, while simultaneously improving the nutritional properties and processing characteristics of food. The utilization of ultrasonic-assisted curing technology has attracted significant attention within the realm of meat product curing, encouraging extensive research efforts. In terms of curing meat products, ultrasonic-assisted curing technology has been widely studied due to its advantages of accelerating the curing speed, reducing nutrient loss, and improving the tenderness of cured meats. Therefore, this article aims to comprehensively review the application and mechanism of ultrasound technology in various stages of meat product curing. Furthermore, it also elaborates the effects of ultrasonic-assisted curing on the tenderness, water retention, and flavor substances of the meat products during the curing process. Besides, the implication of the ultrasound in the processing of meat curation plays a potent role together with other technologies or methods. The use of ultrasound technology in the process of meat curation was analyzed, which might be a theoretical insight for the industrialization prospects of the meat product.

Abstract
Background Repaglinide (REP) is an antidiabetic drug with limited oral bioavailability attributable to its low solubility and considerable first-pass hepatic breakdown. This study aimed to develop a biodegradable chitosan-based system loaded with REP-solid lipid nanoparticles (REP-SLNs) for controlled release and bioavailability enhancement via transdermal delivery. Methods REP-SLNs were fabricated by ultrasonic hot-melt emulsification. A Box-Behnken design (BBD) was employed to explore and optimize the impacts of processing variables (lipid content, surfactant concentration, and sonication amplitude) on particle size (PS), and entrapment efficiency (EE). The optimized REP-SLN formulation was then incorporated within a chitosan solution to develop a transdermal delivery system (REP-SLN-TDDS) and evaluated for physicochemical properties, drug release, and ex vivo permeation profiles. Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics were assessed using experimental rats. Results The optimized REP-SLNs had a PS of 249±9.8 nm and EE of 78%±2.3%. The developed REP-SLN-TDDS demonstrated acceptable characteristics without significant aggregation of REP-SLNs throughout the casting and drying processes. The REP-SLN-TDDS exhibited a biphasic release pattern, where around 36% of the drug load was released during the first 2 h, then the drug release was sustained at around 80% at 24 h. The computed flux across rat skin for the REP-SLN-TDDS was 2.481±0.22 μg/cm2/h in comparison to 0.696±0.07 μg/cm2/h for the unprocessed REP, with an enhancement ratio of 3.56. The REP-SLN-TDDS was capable of sustaining greater REP plasma levels over a 24 h period (p<0.05). The REP-SLN-TDDS also reduced blood glucose levels compared to unprocessed REP and commercial tablets (p<0.05) in experimental rats. Conclusion Our REP-SLN-TDDS can be considered an efficient therapeutic option for REP administration.

Abstract
Novel nanoparticles (Z-R/H) were successfully fabricated by a resveratrol-grafted zein covalent conjugate (Z-R) combined with quaternary ammonium chitosan (HTCC), which were used as stabilizers to prepare peppermint oil (PO) Pickering emulsions with antioxidant activity. HTCC effectively adjusted wettability of Z-R conjugate, and three-phase contact angle of Z-R/H3:1 was moderate (95.01°). The influencing factors of Pickering emulsion formation, including volume fraction of PO, concentration of Z-R/H, and mass ratio of Z-R to HTCC, were evaluated by droplet size, ζ-potential, microscopic observation, and stability index analysis. Pickering emulsions stabilized by Z-R/H3:1 showed excellent physical stability under heat treatment. Z-R/H nanoparticles adsorbed on the oil-water interface yielded a dense filling layer as a physical barrier to improve the emulsion stability, which was validated by confocal laser-scanning microscopy. After 4 weeks of storage, retention rate of PO in Pickering emulsion stabilized by Z-R/H3:1 remained high (72.1 %). Electronic nose analysis showed that Z-R/H3:1-stabilized emulsion effectively prevented volatilization of PO aroma components. Additionally, PO and Z-R/H nanoparticles provided an additive antioxidant effect of Pickering emulsions against DPPH and ABTS free radicals. In summary, these novel Z-R/H nanoparticle offer promising applications as a stabilizer with great potential in preparing functional Pickering emulsions to improve essential oil delivery.

Abstract
Importance of nanotechnology may be seen by penetration of its application in diverse areas including the food sector. With investigations and advancements in nanotechnology, based on feedback from these diverse areas, ease, and efficacy are also increasing. The food sector may use nanotechnology to encapsulate smart foods for increased health, wellness, illness prevention, and effective targeted delivery. Such nanoencapsulated targeted delivery systems may further add to the economic and nutritional properties of smart foods like stability, solubility, effectiveness, safeguard against disintegration, permeability, and bioavailability of smart/bioactive substances. But in the way of application, the fabrication of nanomaterials/nanostructures has several challenges which range from figuring out the optimal technique for obtaining them to determining the most suitable form of nanostructure for a bioactive molecule of interest. This review precisely addresses concepts, recent advances in fabrication techniques as well as current challenges/glitches of nanoencapsulation with special reference to smart foods/bioactive components. Since dealing with food materials also raises the quest for safety and regulatory norms a brief overview of the safety and regulatory aspects of nanomaterials/nanoencapsulation is also presented.

Abstract
An ultrasonic microreactor with rough microchannels is presented in this study for oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion generation. Previous accounts have shown that surface pits or imperfections localize and enhance cavitation activity. In this study cavitation bubbles are localized on the rough microchannels of a borosilicate glass microreactor. The cavitation bubbles in the microchannel are primarily responsible for emulsification in the ultrasonic microreactor. We investigate the emulsification mechanism in the rough microchannels employing high-speed imaging to reveal the different emulsification modes influenced by the size and oscillation intensity of the cavitation bubbles. The effect of emulsification modes on the O/W emulsion droplet size distribution for different surface roughness and frequency is demonstrated. The positive effect of the frequency on minimizing the droplet size utilizing a reactor with large pits is presented. We also demonstrate microreactor systems for a successful generation of miniemulsions with high dispersed phase volume fractions up to 20%. The observed emulsification mechanism in the rough microchannel offers new insights into the utility and scale-up of ultrasonic microreactors for emulsification.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Combined usage of Layer-by-Layer (LbL) coating and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) - responsive charge reversal strategies can improve the cellular internalisation of the colloidal drug delivery systems by also decreasing their cytotoxic effects. EXPERIMENTS Anionic core NLCs were formed by combining the melt emulsification method and ultrasonication. The resulting core NLCs were coated sequentially first with protamine (Prot NLCs) and then with sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) or sodium polyphosphate (Graham's salt, PP) generating TPP or PP NLCs, respectively. The developed NLCs were characterised regarding their size and zeta potential. Enzyme-induced charge reversal of the TPP and PP NLCs was evaluated by zeta potential measurements upon their incubation with alkaline phosphatase (ALP). In parallel, time-dependent phosphate release was monitored in the presence of isolated as well as cell-associated ALP. Morphological evaluations were performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies. Moreover, cell viability and cellular uptake studies were carried out in vitro on Caco-2 cells. FINDINGS The core NLCs were obtained with a mean size of 272.27 ± 5.23 nm and a zeta potential of -25.70 ± 0.26 mV. Upon coating with protamine, the zeta potential raised to positive values with a total change up to Δ29.3 mV also displaying an increase in particle size. The second layer coating with TPP and PP provided a negative surface charge. Subsequent to ALP treatment, the zeta potential of the TPP and PP NLCs reversed from negative to positive values with total changes of Δ8.56 and Δ7.47 mV, respectively. Conformably, significant amounts of phosphate were released from both formulations. Compared with core NLCs, improved cellular viability as well as increased cellular uptake were observed in case of Prot, TPP and PP NLCs.

Abstract
The scarcity of fossil fuel has led to the recent worldwide commercialization of biodiesel-blended diesel. The benefits associated with emulsion fuels have encouraged researchers to study the blended emulsified fuels in diesel engines. Recent results show the effectiveness of blended emulsified fuels in terms of better fuel economy and less harmful emissions. Investigation on the stability of these blended emulsified fuels during storage in the fuel tank is equally crucial for commercialization and practical application. A systematic study on the storage stability of water in biodiesel/diesel blend nanoemulsions (nEs) is presented in this work. A mixture of two biodegradable surfactants, Span 80 and Tween 80, is used to stabilize the nEs. The nEs are formulated by subjecting a mixture of 5 vol % of each surfactant, 5 vol % of water, and 85 vol % of pure or blended diesel to high shear homogenization at 5000 rpm for 2 min. Storage stability of the emulsified fuels is studied for 65 days at 25 °C with the help of dynamic light scattering and viscosity measurements. The mean droplet size increases, and the stability decreases with an increase in the biodiesel concentration. The smallest mean droplet size is 32 nm for emulsified fuel using pure diesel, and these emulsions remain stable for 65 days. No macroscopic phase separation is observed for any sample aged for 24 days. A moderate increment in droplet sizes is observed during this period. The droplet size increases significantly when more than 15 vol % biodiesel is used in the fuel blend. Those samples show stratification after 65 storage days. An increment in the zero-shear viscosity of the samples over aging helps hinder the rapid coalescence of the droplets, thus preventing phase separation. Furthermore, the thermal stability of the samples is also investigated at elevated temperatures up to 50 °C. The nEs are found to be highly stable within this temperature range and showed a moderate change in mean droplets size, especially when the concentration of biodiesel in the emulsified fuel blend is less than 15 vol %.

Abstract
Tadalafil (TAD) is a poorly soluble, phosphodiesterase inhibitor used to treat erectile dysfunction. The primary goal of this project was to prepare nano-emulsions using ultrasonic technology to address TAD bioavailability concerns. The Box−Behnken design was employed to find prominent correlations between factors impacting the sono-emulsification process. The emulsifier concentration, amplitude level, and ultrasonication time were the independent factors, whereas the average droplet size (ADS) and polydispersity index (PDI) were designated as the response variables. TAD-loaded nano-emulsions (93−289 nm) were generated and the emulsifier concentration showed a crucial role in directing emulsion droplet size. The model desirability function was utilized to optimize a nano-emulsion with a small ADS (99.67 ± 7.55 nm) and PDI (0.45 ± 0.04) by adjusting the emulsifiers concentration, amplitude level, and ultrasonication time at 9.85%, 33%, 49 s, respectively. The optimized nano-emulsions did not demonstrate any precipitation or phase separation after stability stress tests. TAD jellies were formulated based on the optimized nano-emulsion and subjected to in vitro evaluation for physical characteristics; TAD content, pH, spreadability, viscosity, syneresis, and taste-masking ability. An optimized nano-emulsion-based jelly (NEJ) formulation showed more than 96% drug dissolution in 30 min relative to 14% for the unprocessed TAD. In vivo assessment of NEJ in experimental rats demonstrated a significant enhancement (p < 0.05) of TAD bioavailability with an AUC0−24h of 2045 ± 70.2 vs. 259.9 ± 17.7 ng·h·mL−1 for the unprocessed TAD. Storage stability results revealed that NEJ remained stable with unremarkable changes in properties for 3 months. Overall, NEJ can be regarded as a successful therapeutic option for TAD administration with immediate-release properties and improved bioavailability.

Abstract
The kinetics of spontaneous emulsification is investigated on aqueous pendant drops in paraffin oil. Optical microscopy in transmission mode is used for high-spatial-resolution image recording. The influence of a lipophilic surfactant (Span 80) and two water-soluble surfactants (CTAB and SDS) is investigated. As time runs, the drop interface turns opaque due to the formation of microstructures associated with spontaneous emulsification. The time evolution of this phenomenon is shown to depend upon temperature and surfactant concentration, which leads to an overall shrinkage due to gradual water uptake and transport into paraffin oil. Spontaneous emulsification kinetics depends upon the chemical composition. Higher concentrations of Span 80 and CTAB (resp. SDS) are shown to promote (resp. hinder) water transport. This work provides new insights into the understanding of spontaneous emulsification when combining the properties of non-ionic and ionic surfactants.

Abstract
The present review emphasizes the role of hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) and acoustic cavitation in clean and green technologies for selected fuels (of hydrocarbon origins such as gasoline, naphtha, diesel, heavy oil, and crude oil) processing applications including biodiesel production. Herein, the role of cavitation reactors, their geometrical parameters, physicochemical properties of liquid media, liquid oxidants, catalyst loading, reactive oxygen species, and different types of emulsification and formation of radicals, formation as well as extraction of formed by-products are systematically reviewed. Among all types of HC reactors, vortex diode and single hole orifices revealed more than 95 % desulfurization yield and a 20 % viscosity reduction in heavy oil upgrading, while multi-hole orifice (100 holes) and slit Venturi allowed obtaining the best biodiesel production processes in terms of high (%) yield, low cost of treatment, and short processing time (5 min; 99 % biodiesel; 4.80 USD/m3). On the other hand, the acoustic cavitation devices are likely to be the most effective in biodiesel production based on ultrasonic bath (90 min; 95 %; 6.7 $/m3) and desulfurization treatment based on ultrasonic transducers (15 min; 98.3 % desulfurization; 10.8 $/m3). The implementation of HC-based processes reveals to be the most cost-effective method over acoustic cavitation-based devices. Finally, by reviewing the ongoing applications and development works, the limitations and challenges for further research are addressed emphasizing the cleaner production and guidelines for future scientists to assure obtaining comprehensive data useful for the research community.

Abstract
In this study, it was aimed to develop a topical piperine nanoemulsion (P-NE) using an ultrasonic emulsification process to find an alternative treatment option for some hypopigmentation disorders such as vitiligo.Results showed that 150 mg piperine loaded NE with 1:2 oil phase to Smix ratio and manufactured with 20 minutes ultrasonication duration with pre-emulsification step was the most durable formulation with a mean globule size of 216.00 ± 2.65, a PdI value of 0.094 ± 0.02 and a zeta potential value of -27.50 ± 2.48 mV.After three months of storage, the selected P-NE (coded as F3P2) remained kinetically stable without visual changes. This formulation displayed a sustained release pattern with a release of 81.92% ± 3.04% piperine after 72 hours. According to our in vitro activity experiments, it was determined that the P-NE had no toxic effect including dose of 5 mg/mL, and the highest P-NE formulation dose of 5 mg/mL increased tyrosinase activity by 32.77% ± 9.09% and melanogenesis activity by 34.90% ± 0.73%.In conclusion, it was demonstrated that the P-NE formulation may serve as a promising therapy for efficient treatment of vitiligo. Moreover, P-NE formulation may also help in preventing irregular pigmentation and skin cancer, associated with the conventional treatment methods.

Abstract
Ultrasonic technology is being increasingly explored in minerals processing. In this paper, ultrasonic treatment was introduced as a novel method for microbial desulfurization of sulfide ores. A Box–Behnken experiment was performed to find the best combination of factor levels for the following experiments; consequently, the combination of factor levels at the maximum 5-day average desulfurization rate at 20 g of ore was a particle size of 120–140 mesh, a shaker speed of 175 rpm, and a dosage of 111 mL of bacterial solution. Under these conditions, a microbial desulfurization experiment of sulfide ores by ultrasonic treatment was carried out, and the effect of the particle size, the ultrasonic action time, and the ultrasonic power were investigated. Results indicated that the ultrasonic effect was not significant for ore samples with larger particle sizes, and the appropriate increase in ultrasonic action time was beneficial to the improvement of desulfurization rate, but the effect showed a decreasing trend when it exceeded 50 min, and the best desulfurization effect was achieved when the power was 300 W. This study demonstrated that the effect of microbial desulfurization can be greatly enhanced by ultrasonic treatment.

Abstract
Peppermint oil emulsions were prepared by using zein-lecithin-EGCG (Z-L/E) complex nanoparticles as emulsifiers. The preparation conditions of emulsions were optimized via measuring the particle size, surface tension and stability of emulsions, and peppermint oil of 3% (particle size = 375 nm, polydispersity index (PDI) = 0.45), the zein:lecithin ratio of 4:1 (w/w) (particle size = 396 nm), and the zein:EGCG ratio of 10:1 (w/w) (surface tension = 47.32 N/m) was the optimal condition. The rapid stability analysis showed that the instability mechanism of emulsions was ascribed to creaming and stratification, and the stability mechanism of emulsions was explored, indicating that the complex nanoparticles adsorbed on the surface of oil droplets to give Pickering emulsions. Electronic tongue experiments showed that the Z-E/L4:1 stabilized emulsion was distinguished from the other three samples due to its good stability. The electronic nose experiment could distinguish the emulsions with different droplet sizes.

Abstract
Pickering emulsions are eco-friendly, stabilized by solid particles, and have an essential role in leading industries. Although Pickering emulations have found several applications, surprisingly few investigations have attempted to explore the effectiveness of various mechanical processes for its production. To fill these gaps, the present investigation comprehensively examined the application of various Pickering emulsion preparation processes such as rotor-stator homogenization emulsification (R-SH), ultrasonic emulsification, and their combined processes by using nano-silica particles. The influences of emulsification time and intensity on emulsion droplets' distribution were analyzed as indicative factors. The kerosene/water nano-silica Pickering emulsion was utilized for all assessments. The obtained results demonstrated that the main distribution peak of the emulsion prepared by R-SH occurred where the chord length was greater than 40 μm. Micro-scale nano-silica-aggregates generated large droplets, while the fine-emulsion fraction was significantly increased after ultrasonic treatment. The experimental results showed that the emulsion prepared only by ultrasound needed substantial power to form a Pickering emulsion since the oil phase was difficult to disperse in the water phase. Finally, it was concluded that preprocessing by R-SH could form a stable and uniform emulsion speedily, which is essential for ultrasound emulsion preparation.

Abstract
Dioxin-contaminated soil has attracted worldwide attention due to its potential negative impacts on human health and the ecosystem. Thus, technological development aiming at high treatment efficiency and low cost for dioxin-contaminated soil is largely needed. In this review, approximately 200 documents were involved to summarize up-to-date scientific achievements of soil washing technology for the remediation of dioxin-contaminated soil. The mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of physical separation techniques (e.g. mechanical stirring, mechanical shaking, ultrasonication, and froth flotation) and washing solutions (e.g. organic solvents, edible oils, and surfactants) used for chemical extraction were comprehensively reviewed. Froth flotation is very promising for field-scale soil washing, whereas organic solvents show high removal efficiencies (up to 99%) of dioxins from contaminated soil. Further, the combination of physical separation and chemical extraction can help enhance dioxin removal efficiency (from 1.5 to 2 times), reducing energy consumption and cost (about 2 times). Among available remediation technologies for dioxin-contaminated soil, soil washing is truly promising since it has shown high removal efficiency (66-99% different remediation scales) with reasonable cost (46 - 250 USD per metric ton). However, the washed solution and volatile organic compounds generated during the process remain a concern and should be addressed in future research.

Abstract
Phytosterols oleogel-based flavor emulsions were successfully fabricated for the first time using natural tea saponin as emulsifier and one-pot ultrasonic technique. The effects of ultrasonic time and power, surfactant concentration, and type of flavor oils (e.g., orange, lemon and peppermint) on the emulsion droplet size were investigated. Submicron emulsions with a dispersed phase made by flavor oil (20 wt%) + phytosterol (4 wt%) were stabilized with 3 wt% saponin were obtained by applying an ultrasonic time of 5 min and ultrasonic power of 280 W. The natural tea saponin emulsions exhibited a superior stability and encapsulation efficiency of phytosterol, compared to traditional emulsifiers. Flavor oil-phytosterol enriched powders were prepared by spray-drying and characterized by SEM, XRD and repose angle. The natural saponin encapsulated oil + phytosterol powders had excellent fluidity, redispersion behavior and low phytosterol crystallinity. It was demonstrated that ultrasound is an effective and suitable technique for fabricating fortified flavor emulsions and microcapsules, which may be used for developing functional lipids-based applications in the food, beverage and cosmetic industries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The properties and stability of emulsion rely greatly on the emulsification method and emulsifier. In this study, different emulsification methods (high-speed homogenization, ultrasonic treatment and their combination) were employed for the preparation of emulsions stabilized by soybean protein isolate (SPI) and soy lecithin (SLT) at three ratios. The microstructure, hydrodynamic average diameter, ζ-potential, creaming stability and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation behaviors of emulsions were investigated. RESULTS The results indicated that the influence of emulsification method was closely related to the ratio of SPI/SLT. Overall, the SPI-SLT-stabilized emulsion treated by ultrasound showed better stability and uniformity, while the combined treatment of high-speed homogenization and ultrasound was helpful in improving the uniformity and stability of SPI-stabilized Pickering emulsion. However, the SLT-stabilized emulsions all exhibited worse uniformity in terms of particle size distribution and polydispersity index. CONCLUSION These results will be helpful for selecting an appropriate emulsification method and emulsifier to improve the stability of emulsions. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The efficient use of supplied energy is the basis of the discrete-impulse energy supply (DIES) concept. In order to explore the possibility of using DIES to intensify the hydromechanical processes, the emulsification of milk fat (homogenization of milk, preparation of spreads) and, in particular, the processing of cream cheese masses, were studied. Whole non-homogenized milk, fat emulsions, and cream cheese mass were the object of investigation. To evaluate the efficiency of milk homogenization, the homogenization coefficient change was studied, which was determined by using the centrifugation method, as it is the most affordable and accurate one. To provide the proper dispersion of the milk emulsion, six treatment cycles must be carried out under the developed cavitation mode in a static-type apparatus, here resulting in a light grain-like consistency, and exhibiting the smell of pasteurized milk. The emulsions were evaluated according to the degree of destabilization, resistance and dispersion of the fat phase. On the basis of the obtained data with respect to the regularities of fat dispersion forming in the rotor-type apparatus, the proper parameters required to obtain technologically stable fat emulsion spreads, possessing a dispersion and stability similar to those of plain milk creams, were determined. It was determined that under the DIES, an active dynamic effect on the milk globules takes place. The rheological characteristics of cheese masses were evaluated on the basis of the effective change in viscosity. The effect of the mechanical treatment on the structure of the cheese masses was determined.

Abstract
The use of ultrasound to generate mini-emulsions (50 nm to 1 μm in diameter) and nanoemulsions (mean droplet diameter < 200 nm) is of great relevance in drug delivery, particle synthesis and cosmetic and food industries. Therefore, it is desirable to develop new strategies to obtain new formulations faster and with less reagent consumption. Here, we present a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based microfluidic device that generates oil-in-water or water-in-oil mini-emulsions in continuous flow employing ultrasound as the driving force. A Langevin piezoelectric attached to the same glass slide as the microdevice provides enough power to create mini-emulsions in a single cycle and without reagents pre-homogenization. By introducing independently four different fluids into the microfluidic platform, it is possible to gradually modify the composition of oil, water and two different surfactants, to determine the most favorable formulation for minimizing droplet diameter and polydispersity, employing less than 500 µL of reagents. It was found that cavitation bubbles are the most important mechanism underlying emulsions formation in the microchannels and that degassing of the aqueous phase before its introduction to the device can be an important factor for reduction of droplet polydispersity. This idea is demonstrated by synthetizing solid polymeric particles with a narrow size distribution starting from a mini-emulsion produced by the device.

Abstract
Ultrasonic emulsification (USE) assisted by cavitation is an effective method to produce emulsion droplets. However, the role of gas bubbles in the USE process still remains unclear. Hence, in the present paper, high-speed camera observations of bubble evolution and emulsion droplets formation in oil and water were used to capture in real-time the emulsification process, while experiments with different gas concentrations were carried out to investigate the effect of gas bubbles on droplet size. The results show that at the interface of oil and water, gas bubbles with a radius larger than the resonance radius collapse and sink into the water phase, inducing (oil-water) blended liquid jets across bubbles to generate oil-in-water-in-oil (O/W/O) and water-in-oil (W/O) droplets in the oil phase and oil-in-water (O/W) droplets in the water phase, respectively. Gas bubbles with a radius smaller than the resonance radius at the interface always move towards the oil phase, accompanied with the generation of water droplets in the oil phase. In the oil phase, gas bubbles, which can attract bubbles nearby the interface, migrate to the interface of oil and water due to acoustic streaming, and generate numerous droplets. As for the gas bubbles in the water phase, those can break neighboring droplets into numerous finer ones during bubble oscillation. With the increase in gas content, more bubbles undergo chaotic oscillation, leading to smaller and more stable emulsion droplets, which explains the beneficial role of gas bubbles in USE. Violently oscillating microbubbles are, therefore, found to be the governing cavitation regime for emulsification process. These results provide new insights to the mechanisms of gas bubbles in oil-water emulsions, which may be useful towards the optimization of USE process in industry.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of US on the properties of the fluconazole emulsions prepared using imidazolium-based ILs ([Cn C1im]Br). The effects of the preparation method (mechanical stirring or US), US amplitude, alkyl chain length (of [C12C1im]Br or [C16C1im]Br), and IL concentration on the physicochemical properties were evaluated. Properties such as droplet size, span index, morphology, viscosity encapsulation efficiency, and drug release profile were determined. The results showed that US-prepared emulsions had a smaller droplet size and smaller polydispersity (Span) than those prepared by mechanical stirring. Additionally, the results showed that emulsions prepared with [C16C1im]Br and US had spherical shapes and increased stability compared to emulsions prepared by MS, and also depended on the IL concentration. The emulsion prepared by US at 40% amplitude had increased encapsulation efficiency. US provided a decrease in the viscosity of emulsions containing [C12C1im]Br; however, in general, all emulsions had viscosity close to that of water. Emulsions containing [C16C1im]Br had the lowest viscosities of all the emulsions. The emulsions containing the IL [C16C1im]Br had more controlled release and a lower cumulative percentage of drug release. The IL concentration required to prepare these emulsions was lower than the amount of conventional surfactant required, which highlights the potential synergic effects of ILs and US in preparing emulsions of hydrophobic drugs.
