The paper presents a comprehensive bibliometric and contextual analysis, followed by a literature review, to shed light on the vast potential of computational methods in this domain. It reveals that most existing methods focus on single biofabrication process stages and components, and there is a significant gap in approaches that utilize accurate models encompassing both biological and technological aspects. This analysis underscores the indispensable role of these methods in understanding and effectively manipulating complex biological systems and the necessity for developing computational methods that span multiple stages and components. The review concludes that such comprehensive computational methods are essential for developing innovative and efficient Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine biofabrication solutions, driving forward advancements in this dynamic and evolving field.

Sharp needle reconstructs peripheral outflow for patients with malfunctional arteriovenous fistula

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of combining ultrasound-guided sharp needle technique with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) for treating outflow stenosis or dysfunction in arteriovenous fistula (AVF) among hemodialysis patients.

METHODS

From October 2021 to March 2023, patients with occluded or malfunctional fistula veins not amenable to regularly angioplasty were retrospectively enrolled in the study. They underwent ultrasound-guided sharp needle intervention followed by PTA. Data on the location and length between the two veins, technical success, clinical outcomes, and complications were collected. Patency rates post-angioplasty were calculated through Kaplan-Meier analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 23 patients were included. The mean length of the reconstructed extraluminal segment was 3.18 cm. The sharp needle opening was performed on the basilic vein (60.9%), brachial vein (26.1%), or upper arm cephalic vein (13%) to create outflow channels. Postoperatively, all cases presented with mild subcutaneous hematomas around the tunneling site and minor diffuse bleeding. The immediate patency rate for the internal fistulas was 100%, with 3-month, 6-month, and 12-month patency rates at 91.3%, 78.3%, and 43.5%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Sharp needle technology merged with PTA presents an effective and secure minimally invasive method for reconstructing the outflow tract, offering a new solution for recanalizing high-pressure or occluded fistulas.

Nanosponge hydrogel of octadecyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propanoate of Alcaligenes faecalis

Octadecyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propanoate (ODHP) was extracted in a previous study from the culture broth of soil isolate Alcaligenes faecalis MT332429 and showed a promising antimycotic activity. This study was aimed to formulate ODHP loaded β-cyclodextrins (CD) nanosponge (NS) hydrogel (HG) to control skin fungal ailments since nanosponges augment the retention of tested agents in the skin. Box-Behnken design was used to produce the optimized NS formulation, where entrapment efficiency percent (EE%), polydispersity index (PDI), and particle size (PS) were assigned as dependent parameters, while the independent process parameters were polyvinyl alcohol % (w/v %), polymer-linker ratio, homogenization time, and speed. The carbopol 940 hydrogel was then created by incorporating the nanosponges. The hydrogel fit Higuchi's kinetic release model the best, according to in vitro drug release. Stability and photodegradation studies revealed that the NS-HG remained stable under tested conditions. The formulation also showed higher in vitro antifungal activity against Candida albicans compared to the control fluconazole. In vivo study showed that ODHP-NS-HG increased survival rates, wound contraction, and healing of wound gap and inhibited the inflammation process compared to the other control groups. The histopathological examinations and Masson's trichrome staining showed improved healing and higher records of collagen deposition. Moreover, the permeability of ODHP-NS-HG was higher through rats' skin by 1.5-folds compared to the control isoconazole 1%. Therefore, based on these results, NS-HG formulation is a potential carrier for enhanced and improved topical delivery of ODHP. Our study is a pioneering research on the development of a formulation for ODHP produced naturally from soil bacteria. KEY POINTS: • Octadecyl 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propanoate was successfully formulated as a nanosponge hydrogel and statistically optimized. • The new formula exhibited in vitro good stability, drug release, and higher antifungal activity against C. albicans as compared to the fluconazole. • Ex vivo showed enhanced skin permeability, and in vivo analysis showed high antifungal activity as evidenced by measurement of various biochemical parameters and histopathological examination.

Dialdehyde starch cross-linked aminated gelatin sponges with excellent hemostatic performance and biocompatibility

Developing a hemostatic material suitable for rapid hemostasis remains a challenge. This study presents a novel aminated gelatin sponge cross-linked with dialdehyde starch, exhibiting excellent biocompatibility and hemostatic ability. This aminated gelatin sponge features hydrophilic surface and rich porous structure with a porosity of up to 80 %. The results show that the aminated gelatin sponges exhibit superior liquid absorption capacity and can absorb up to 30-50 times their own mass of simulated body fluid within 5 min. Compared with the commercial gelatin hemostatic sponge and non-aminated gelatin hemostatic sponge, the aminated gelatin hemostatic sponge can accelerate the hemostatic process through electrostatic interactions, demonstrating superior hemostatic performance in both in vitro and in vivo hemostasis tests. The aminated gelatin sponge can effectively control the hemostatic time within 80 s in the in vivo rat femoral artery injury model, significantly outperforming both commercial and non-aminated gelatin sponges. In addition, the aminated gelatin sponge also exhibits good biocompatibility and certain antibacterial properties. The proposed aminated gelatin sponge has very good application prospects for the management of massive hemorrhage.

A biguanide chitosan-based hydrogel adhesive accelerates the healing of bacterial-infected wounds

The development of tissue adhesives with good biocompatibility and potent antimicrobial properties is crucial for addressing the high incidence of surgical site infections in emergency and clinical settings. Herein, an injectable hydrogel adhesive composed of chitosan biguanidine (CSG), oxidized dextran (ODex) and tannin (TA) was synthesized primarily through Schiff-base reactions, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions. TA was introduced into the CSG/ODex hydrogel to prepare a physicochemically double cross-linked hydrogel. The hydrogel formulation incorporating 2 wt% TA (CSG/ODex-TA2) exhibited rapid gelation, moderate mechanical properties, good tissue adhesion, and sustained release behavior of TA. Both in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that CSG/ODex-TA2 showed significantly enhanced adhesion and antibacterial effectiveness compared to the CSG/ODex hydrogel and commercial fibrin glue. Leveraging the positive charge of CSG, the CSG/ODex-TA2 hydrogel demonstrated a strong contact antibacterial effect, while the sustained release of TA provided diffusion antibacterial capabilities. By integrating contact and diffusion antibacterial mechanisms into the hydrogel, a promising approach was developed to boost antibacterial efficiency and accelerate the healing of wounds infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The CSG/ODex-TA2 hydrogel has excellent biocompatibility, hemostatic properties, and antibacterial capabilities, making it a promising candidate for improving in vivo wound care and combating bacterial infections.

Locally released dexamethasone and its effects on osteogenic activity at implant-tissue interface

The osseointegration of titanium implants within the host tissue holds crucial importance. The introduction of functional coatings at tissue-implant interface enhances the bioactivity of titanium implants, improves their therapeutic outcomes, and enhances the effectiveness of treatments. In this study, we focused on enhancing the bioactivity of titanium-based implant materials by coating the titanium surfaces with chitosan microspheres, which are loaded with osseointegration-promoting agent dexamethasone (DEX). Initially, chitosan microspheres were successfully produced, followed by DEX loading through diffusion, resulting in a drug loading efficiency of around 50.2 (wt %). The subsequent drug release profile displayed a 24-hour duration, releasing approximately 32.6 (wt %) of the loaded DEX. In cell proliferation assays using human osteosarcoma (SAOS-2) cells, Ti surfaces coated with DEX-loaded chitosan microspheres initially exhibited lower cell numbers compared with DEX-free ones. This observation was attributed to transient osteogenic differentiation effects of DEX, since a notable increase in cell proliferation was observed on the 7th day. Von Kossa staining revealed mineralization beginning on the 14th day, particularly evident in DEX-loaded samples. Moreover, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity displayed a pattern of initial increase and subsequent decrease, with DEX release from chitosan microspheres showing a clear influence on the osteogenic differentiation, especially on the 7th day. These findings align with literature, highlighting DEX's potential to enhance osteogenic differentiation and cellular behavior on chitosan microsphere-coated titanium surfaces. This study emphasizes the promising implications for functionalizing surfaces of implant materials with DEX-loaded chitosan microspheres to improve their biocompatibility and bioactivity.

Numerical simulation study on opening blood-brain barrier by ultrasonic cavitation

Experimental studies have shown that ultrasonic cavitation can reversibly open the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to assist drug delivery. Nevertheless, the majority of the present study focused on experimental aspects of BBB opening. In this study, we developed a three-bubble-liquid-solid model to investigate the dynamic behavior of multiple bubbles within the blood vessels, and elucidate the physical mechanism of drug molecules through endothelial cells under ultrasonic cavitation excitation. The results showed that the large bubbles have a significant inhibitory effect on the movement of small bubbles, and the vibration morphology of intravascular microbubbles was affected by the acoustic parameters, microbubble size, and the distance between the microbubbles. The ultrasonic cavitation can significantly enhance the unidirectional flux of drug molecules, and the unidirectional flux growth rate of the wall can reach more than 5 %. Microjets and shock waves emitted from microbubbles generate different stress distribution patterns on the vascular wall, which in turn affects the pore size of the vessel wall and the permeability of drug molecules. The vibration morphology of microbubbles is related to the concentration, arrangement and scale of microbubbles, and the drug permeation impact can be enhanced by optimizing bubble size and acoustic parameters. The results offer an extensive depiction of the factors influencing the blood-brain barrier opening through ultrasonic cavitation, and the model may provide a potential technique to actively regulate the penetration capacity of drugs through endothelial layer of the neurovascular system by regulating BBB opening.

Optical Marker-Based Motion Capture of the Human Spine: A Scoping Review of Study Design and Outcomes

Biomechanical analysis of the human spine is crucial to understanding injury patterns. Motion capture technology has gained attention due to its non-invasive nature. Nevertheless, traditional motion capture studies consider the spine a single rigid segment, although its alignment changes during movement. Moreover, guidelines that indicate where markers should be placed for a specific exercise do not exist. This study aims to review the methods used to assess spine biomechanics using motion capture systems to determine the marker sets used, the protocols used, the resulting parameters, the analysed activities, and the characteristics of the studied populations. PRISMA guidelines were used to perform a Scoping Review using SCOPUS and Web of Science databases. Fifty-six journal and conference articles from 1997 to 2023 were considered for the analysis. This review showed that Plug-in-Gait is the most used marker set. The lumbar spine is the segment that generates the most interest because of its high mobility and function as a weight supporter. Furthermore, angular position and velocity are the most common outcomes when studying the spine. Walking, standing, and range of movement were the most studied activities compared to sports and work-related activities. Male and female participants were recruited similarly across all included articles. This review presents the motion capture techniques and measurement outcomes of biomechanical studies of the human spine, to help standardize the field. This work also discusses trends in marker sets, study outcomes, studied segments and segmentation approaches.

Spiral groove bearing design for improving plasma skimming in rotary blood pumps

High-efficiency plasma skimming is hopeful to prevent hemolysis inside spiral groove bearings (SGBs) because it can exclude red blood cells from the ridge gap with a high shear force. However, no study reveals the shape design of SGBs to improve plasma skimming. Therefore, this study proposed and applied a groove design strategy to designing an optimal SGB for enhancing plasma skimming in a rotary blood pump (RBP). Initially, we proposed the design strategy that the shape of the groove for enhancing plasma skimming corresponds to the direction of blood flow in the ridge gap. Second, we visualized the cell flow in a specially designed experimental RBP to determine the direction of blood flow, which was helpful in the subsequent SGB design. Then, we created an SGB to provide superior plasma skimming and applied it to the experimental RBP. We evaluated the plasma skimming effect of SGB at rotational speeds ranging from 2400 to 3000 rpm and hematocrit conditions between 1% and 40%. At a 1% hematocrit, the plasma skimming efficiency for the entire SGB was greater than 95%. In all hematocrit conditions, the efficiency at the inner ridges of the SGB was greater than 80%. The results showed the designed SGB successfully induced excellent plasma skimming within ridge gaps. This study is the first to propose and apply a shape design strategy to generate excellent plasma skimming within an SGB. This study may contribute to the prevention of SGB hemolysis inside SGB for use in RBPs.

Effect of argon cold plasma composition on orthodontic bonding-new insights into input parameters and protocols

PURPOSE

Cold atmospheric plasma can functionalize enamel without damaging the substrate morphology. It therefore has the potential to be a gentle alternative to conventional acid etching. To realize the full potential of cold atmospheric plasma in orthodontic bonding, the input parameters and protocols that are most beneficial to surface modification must first be identified. We aimed to clarify how the admixture of oxygen to cold atmospheric plasma and the rewetting of the enamel affect the conditioning properties for orthodontic bonding.

METHODS

First, we illustrated the morphological effects of different plasma compositions on the enamel surface by means of scanning electron microscopy. Then, we measured the shear bond strength resulting from different conditioning techniques on bovine enamel specimens: conventional acid etching; no conditioning; pure argon plasma; argon plasma plus 0.5% oxygen admixture; argon plasma plus 0.5% oxygen and rewetting after plasma application. Brackets were bonded using light cured adhesive; all specimens were subjected to thermocycling. The shear bond strength of each specimen was measured in a universal testing machine and compared using Welch one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Games-Howell post hoc test.

RESULTS

Specimens conditioned with argon plasma plus 0.5% oxygen and rewetting showed a significantly higher shear bond strength than specimens conditioned with conventional acid etching. Conditioning with pure argon plasma and argon plasma plus 0.5% oxygen without rewetting yielded significantly lower shear bond strength.

CONCLUSION

Admixing 0.5% oxygen and rewetting the enamel after plasma application are crucial steps that could help make cold atmospheric plasma a gentle conditioning technique in orthodontic bonding.

MFS-DBF: A trustworthy multichannel feature sieve and decision boundary formulation system for Obstructive Sleep Apnea detection

The fine identification of sleep apnea events is instrumental in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) diagnosis. The development of sleep apnea event detection algorithms based on polysomnography is becoming a research hotspot in medical signal processing. In this paper, we propose an Inverse-Projection based Visualization System (IPVS) for sleep apnea event detection algorithms. The IPVS consists of a feature dimensionality reduction module and a feature reconstruction module. First, features of blood oxygen saturation and nasal airflow are extracted and used as input data for event analysis. Then, visual analysis is conducted on the feature distribution for apnea events. Next, dimensionality reduction and reconstruction methods are combined to achieve the dynamic visualization of sleep apnea event feature sets and the visual analysis of classifier decision boundaries. Moreover, the decision-making consistency is explored for various sleep apnea event detection classifiers, which provides researchers and users with an intuitive understanding of the detection algorithm. We applied the IPVS to an OSA detection algorithm with an accuracy of 84% and a diagnostic accuracy of 92% on a publicly available dataset. The experimental results show that the consistency between our visualization results and prior medical knowledge provides strong evidence for the practicality of the proposed system. For clinical practice, the IPVS can guide users to focus on samples with higher uncertainty presented by the OSA detection algorithm, reducing the workload and improving the efficiency of clinical diagnosis, which in turn increases the value of trust.

Therapeutic potential of Aloe vera-coated curcumin encapsulated nanoparticles in an Alzheimer-induced mice model: behavioural, biochemical and histopathological evidence

OBJECTIVE

The main purpose of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Aloe vera-coated curcumin encapsulated nanoparticles in mitigating Alzheimer's disease progression in mice, by examining behavioural changes, biochemical markers, and histopathological alterations, thus elucidating its potential as a treatment strategy.

METHODS

The green synthesis method was used to synthesise this nanoformulation, which was then characterised using a variety of techniques, including percentage encapsulation efficacy, UV-visible spectroscopy, DLS, FT-IR, FESEM, and EDX. Several in-vivo assessments, including behavioural evaluations, dose optimisation studies, oxidative stress marker estimation, and histological studies, were conducted to determine the potential therapeutic impact of nanoformulation on the Alzheimer-induced mice model.

RESULTS

The synthesised nanoparticles show a mean diameter of 76.12 nm ±1.23, a PDI of 0.313 ± 0.02, a zeta potential of 6.27 ± 0.65 mV, and the percentage encapsulation efficiency between 90% and 95% indicating good stability of synthesised nanoformulation. With the help of Morris water maze, Y-maze, and novel object recognition assay, the learning capacity and memory were assessed, and the results show that the synthesised nanoformulation significantly decreased the transfer latency to reach baited arm or to the hidden platform within 7 days.

CONCLUSION

The formulation demonstrated significant biochemical benefits and remarkable cognitive advantages, establishing it as a prospective therapeutic intervention option that is both safe and effective.

Automatic Quantitative Assessment of Muscle Strength Based on Deep Learning and Ultrasound

Skeletal muscle is a vital organ that promotes human movement and maintains posture. Accurate assessment of muscle strength is helpful to provide valuable insights for athletes' rehabilitation and strength training. However, traditional techniques rely heavily on the operator's expertise, which may affect the accuracy of the results. In this study, we propose an automated method to evaluate muscle strength using ultrasound and deep learning techniques. B-mode ultrasound data of biceps brachii of multiple athletes at different strength levels were collected and then used to train our deep learning model. To evaluate the effectiveness of this method, this study tested the contraction of the biceps brachii under different force levels. The classification accuracy of this method for grade 4 and grade 6 muscle strength reached 98% and 96%, respectively, and the overall average accuracy was 93% and 87%, respectively. The experimental results confirm that the innovative methods in this paper can accurately and effectively evaluate and classify muscle strength.

Effects of quercetin- and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum-containing bioactive films on physicochemical properties and microbial safety of grass carp

In this study, the electrospinning technique was used to co-encapsulate Quercetin (Qu) and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 1-24-LJ in PVA-based nanofibers, and the effect of bioactive films on fish preservation was evaluated at the first time. The findings indicated that both Lpb. plantarum 1-24-LJ and Qu were successfully in the fibers, and co-loaded fibers considerably outperformed single-loaded fiber in terms of bacterial survival and antioxidant activity. Following fish preservation using the loaded fibers, significant reductions were observed in TVB-N, TBARS, and microbial complexity compared to the control group. Additionally, the co-loaded fibers more effectively reduced the counts of H2S-producing bacteria and Pseudomonas. In the future, fibers with both active substances and LAB hold promise as a novel approach for fish preservation.

Numerical assessment of using various outlet boundary conditions on the hemodynamics of an idealized left coronary artery model

Vascular diseases are greatly influenced by the hemodynamic parameters and the accuracy of determining these parameters depends on the use of correct boundary conditions. The present work carries out a two-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) simulation to investigate the effects of outlet pressure boundary conditions on the hemodynamics through the left coronary artery bifurcation with moderate stenosis (50%) in the left anterior descending (LAD) branch. The Carreau viscosity model is employed to characterise the shear-thinning behaviour of blood. The results of the study reveal that the employment of zero pressure at the outlet boundaries significantly overestimates the values of hemodynamic variables like wall shear stress (WSS), and time-averaged wall shear stress (TAWSS) compared with human healthy and pulsatile pressure outlet conditions. However, the difference between these variables is marginally low for human healthy and pulsatile pressure outlets. The oscillatory shear index (OSI) remains the same across all scenarios, indicating independence from the outlet boundary condition. Furthermore, the magnitude of negative axial velocity and pressure drop across the plaque are found to be higher at the zero pressure outlet boundary condition.

The influence of neutral MDP-Na salt on dentin bond performance and remineralization potential of etch-&-rinse adhesive

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the effect of neutral 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate salt (MDP-Na) on the dentin bond strength and remineralization potential of etch-&-rinse adhesive.

METHODS

Two experimental etch-&-rinse adhesives were formulated by incorporating 0 wt% (E0) or 20 wt% (E20) neutral MDP-Na into a basic primer. A commercial adhesive, Adper Single Bond 2 (SB, 3 M ESPE), served as the control. Sixty prepared teeth were randomly allocated into three groups (n = 20) and bonded using either one of the experimental adhesives or SB. Following 24 h of water storage, the bonded specimens were sectioned into resin-dentin sticks, with four resin-dentin sticks obtained from each tooth for microtensile bond strength (MTBS) test. Half of the sticks from each group were immediately subjected to tensile loading using a microtensile tester at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min, while the other half underwent tensile loading after 6-month incubation in artificial saliva (AS). The degree of conversion (DC) of both the control and experimental adhesives (n = 6 in each group) and the adsorption properties of MDP-Na on the dentin organic matrix (n = 5 in each group) were determined using Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry. Furthermore, the effectiveness of neutral MDP-Na in promoting the mineralization of two-dimensional collagen fibrils and the adhesive-dentin interface was explored using transmission electron microscopy and selected-area electron diffraction. Two- and one-way ANOVA was employed to assess the impact of adhesive type and water storage on dentin bond strength and the DC (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The addition of MDP-Na into the primer increased both the short- and long-term MTBS of the experimental adhesives (p = 0.00). No difference was noted in the DC between the control, E0 and E20 groups (p = 0.366). The MDP-Na remained absorbed on the demineralized dentin even after thorough rinsing. The intra- and extra-fibrillar mineralization of the two-dimensional collagen fibril and dentin bond hybrid layer was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and selected-area electron diffraction when the primer was added with MDP-Na.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of neutral MDP-Na results in high-quality hybrid layer that increase the dentin bond strength of etch-&-rinse adhesive and provides the adhesive with remineralizing capability. This approach may represent a suitable bonding strategy for improving the dentin bond strength and durability of etch-&-rinse adhesive.

Two Decades of Advances and Limitations in Organ Recellularization

The recellularization of tissues after decellularization is a relatively new technology in the field of tissue engineering (TE). Decellularization involves removing cells from a tissue or organ, leaving only the extracellular matrix (ECM). This can then be recellularized with new cells to create functional tissues or organs. The first significant mention of recellularization in decellularized tissues can be traced to research conducted in the early 2000s. One of the landmark studies in this field was published in 2008 by Ott, where researchers demonstrated the recellularization of a decellularized rat heart with cardiac cells, resulting in a functional organ capable of contraction. Since then, other important studies have been published. These studies paved the way for the widespread application of recellularization in TE, demonstrating the potential of decellularized ECM to serve as a scaffold for regenerating functional tissues. Thus, although the concept of recellularization was initially explored in previous decades, these studies from the 2000s marked a major turning point in the development and practical application of the technology for the recellularization of decellularized tissues. The article reviews the historical advances and limitations in organ recellularization in TE over the last two decades.

Biological Functions of Macromolecular Protein Hydrogels in Constructing Osteogenic Microenvironment

Irreversible bone defects resulting from trauma, infection, and degenerative illnesses have emerged as a significant health concern. Structurally and functionally controllable hydrogels made by bone tissue engineering (BTE) have become promising biomaterials. Natural proteins are able to establish connections with autologous proteins through unique biologically active regions. Hydrogels based on proteins can simulate the bone microenvironment and regulate the biological behavior of stem cells in the tissue niche, making them candidates for research related to bone regeneration. This article reviews the biological functions of various natural macromolecular proteins (such as collagen, gelatin, fibrin, and silk fibroin) and highlights their special advantages as hydrogels. Then the latest research trends on cross-linking modified macromolecular protein hydrogels with improved mechanical properties and composite hydrogels loaded with exogenous micromolecular proteins have been discussed. Finally, the applications of protein hydrogels, such as 3D printed hydrogels, microspheres, and injectable hydrogels, were introduced, aiming to provide a reference for the repair of clinical bone defects.

Correlation between Na-Cs Ion Exchange Properties in the Alkaline Form and Acid Strength in the Proton Form of Zeolite

The ion exchange function of zeolite is useful for such a purpose as the removal of radioactive Cs species from water. In the very early days of zeolite science, the affinity of zeolites for metal cations was explained based on geometry. After the explanation presented above was proposed, many new zeolites and related materials were discovered or synthesized. Furthermore, it has become clear that the chemical nature of the ion exchange sites is strongly dependent on the framework topology. In this study, the ion exchange behavior between Na-form zeolites with different framework topologies and Cs-containing aqueous solutions was analyzed, and the equilibrium constant was calculated based on the Langmuir type equation to investigate the influence of the chemical nature of the zeolite framework on ion selectivity. The equilibrium constants at room temperature were in the order FAU < LTA < MFI < YFI < MOR. This order is the same as the order of Bro̷nsted acid strengths in the corresponding proton form zeolites. It is suggested that the delocalization of charge around the ion exchange site stabilizes a large cation whose charge is delocalized. In contrast, the equilibrium constant was not related to the pore and cavity size. This opens new insight into the influence of the chemical nature of zeolite on the affinity to cation.

Implant Design and Cervical Spinal Biomechanics and Neurorehabilitation: A Finite Element Investigation

INTRODUCTION

The cervical spine, pivotal for mobility and overall body function, can be affected by cervical spondylosis, a major contributor to neural disorders. Prevalent in both general and military populations, especially among pilots, cervical spondylosis induces pain and limits spinal capabilities. Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery, proposed by Cloward in the 1950s, is a promising solution for restoring natural cervical curvature. The study objective was to investigate the impacts of ACDF implant design on postsurgical cervical biomechanics and neurorehabilitation outcomes by utilizing a biofield head-neck finite element (FE) platform that can facilitate scenario-specific perturbations of neck muscle activations. This study addresses the critical need to enhance computational models, specifically FE modeling, for ACDF implant design.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We utilized a validated head-neck FE model to investigate spine-implant biomechanical interactions. An S-shaped dynamic cage incorporating titanium (Ti) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) materials was modeled at the C4/C5 level. The loading conditions were carefully designed to mimic helmet-to-helmet impact in American football, providing a realistic and challenging scenario. The analysis included intervertebral joint motion, disk pressure, and implant von Mises stress.

RESULTS

The PEEK implant demonstrated an increased motion in flexion and lateral bending at the contiguous spinal (C4/C5) level. In flexion, the Ti implant showed a modest 5% difference under 0% activation conditions, while PEEK exhibited a more substantial 14% difference. In bending, PEEK showed a 24% difference under 0% activation conditions, contrasting with Ti's 17%. The inclusion of the head resulted in an average increase of 18% in neck angle and 14% in C4/C5 angle. Disk pressure was influenced by implant material, muscle activation level, and the presence of the head. Polyetheretherketone exhibited lower stress values at all intervertebral disc levels, with a significant effect at the C6/C7 levels. Muscle activation level significantly influenced disk stress at all levels, with higher activation yielding higher stress. Titanium implant consistently showed higher disk stress values than PEEK, with an orders-of-magnitude difference in von Mises stress. Excluding the head significantly affected disk and implant stress, emphasizing its importance in accurate implant performance simulation.

CONCLUSIONS

This study emphasized the use of a biofidelic head-neck model to assess ACDF implant designs. Our results indicated that including neck muscles and head structures improves biomechanical outcome measures. Furthermore, unlike Ti implants, our findings showed that PEEK implants maintain neck motion at the affected level and reduce disk stresses. Practitioners can use this information to enhance postsurgery outcomes and reduce the likelihood of secondary surgeries. Therefore, this study makes an important contribution to computational biomechanics and implant design domains by advancing computational modeling and theoretical knowledge on ACDF-spine interaction dynamics.

Current Therapeutic Strategies of Intervertebral Disc Regenerative Medicine

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is one of the most frequent causes of low back pain. No treatment is currently available to delay the progression of IDD. Conservative treatment or surgical interventions is only used to target the symptoms of IDD rather than treat the underlying cause. Currently, numerous potential therapeutic strategies are available, including molecular therapy, gene therapy, and cell therapy. However, the hostile environment of degenerated discs is a major problem that has hindered the clinical applicability of such approaches. In this regard, the design of drugs using alternative delivery systems (macro-, micro-, and nano-sized particles) may resolve this problem. These can protect and deliver biomolecules along with helping to improve the therapeutic effect of drugs via concentrating, protecting, and prolonging their presence in the degenerated disc. This review summarizes the research progress of diagnosis and the current options for treating IDD.

Intra-articular interventions in osteoarthritis: Navigating the landscape of hyaluronic acid, mesenchymal stem cells, and platelet-rich plasma

Osteoarthritis (OA) poses a substantial burden on patients, leading to pain, functional decline, and reduced quality of life. While conventional treatments focus on symptom management, disease-modifying interventions are yet to be established. This review explores the efficacy of intra-articular interventions, particularly hyaluronic acid (HA), mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), in the context of OA management. HA injections, with diverse formulations like Hylan G-F20, sodium hyaluronate, and hyaluronan, present varying outcomes, necessitating a nuanced understanding of their effectiveness and timing. MSC therapy, derived from adipose tissue, umbilical cord, or bone marrow, shows promising results in clinical improvement, with adipose-derived MSCs demonstrating efficacy in maintaining benefits over 6 mo. Conversely, bone-marrow-derived MSCs show limited effectiveness, highlighting the need for source-specific considerations. PRP has emerged as a superior option for long-term pain reduction and quality of life improvement, with leukocyte-poor formulations and a critical platelet count of 10 billion demonstrating optimal results. This comprehensive analysis underscores the potential of intra-articular interventions in OA management, emphasizing the need for personalized and evidence-based approaches to enhance treatment efficacy and patient outcomes.

Recent advances in nanostructured delivery systems for vancomycin

Despite the development of new generations of antibiotics, vancomycin remained as a high-efficacy antibiotic for treating the infections caused by MRSA. Researchers have explored various nanoformulations, aiming to enhance the therapeutic efficacy of vancomycin. Such novel formulations improve the effectiveness of drug cargoes in treating bacterial infections and minimizing the risk of adverse effects. The vast of researches have focuses on enhancing the permeation ability of vancomycin through different biological barriers especially those of gastrointestinal tract. Increasing the drug loading and tuning the drug release from nanocarrier are other important goal for many conducted studies. This study reviews the newest nano-based formulations for vancomycin as a key antibiotic in treating hospitalized bacterial infections.

Antithrombotic and anticariogenic activity of peptide fractions from cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) protein hydrolysates

BACKGROUND

Protein-derived peptide fractions can play a key role in the physiological and metabolic regulation and modulation of the body, which suggests that they could be used as functional ingredients to improve health and to reduce the risk of disease. This work aimed to evaluate the in vitro antithrombotic and anticariogenic bioactivity of hydrolysates and protein fractions obtained from cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) by biocatalysis.

RESULTS

Cowpea protein concentrate was hydrolyzed by sequential action with two enzyme systems, Pepsin-Pancreatin or Alcalase-Flavourzyme. There was extensive enzymatic hydrolysis, with degrees of hydrolysis of 34.94% and 81.43% for Pepsin-Pancreatin and Alcalase-Flavourzyme, respectively. The degree of hydrolysis for the control treatments, without the addition of the enzymes Pepsin-Pancreatin and Alcalase-Flavourzyme was 1.1% and 1.2%, respectively. The hydrolysates were subjected to fractionation by ultrafiltration, with five cut-off points according to molecular weight (<1, 1-3, 3-5, 5-10 and >10 kDa). The Alcalase-Flavourzyme hydrolysate led to 100% inhibition of platelet aggregation, while the Pepsin-Pancreatin hydrolysate showed 77.41% inhibition, but this was approximately 100% in the ultrafiltered fractions. The highest anticariogenic activity was obtained with the Pepsin-Pancreatin system, with 61.55% and 56.07% for calcium and phosphorus demineralization, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Hydrolysates and their peptide fractions from Vigna unguiculata exhibited inhibition of platelet aggregation and protection of tooth enamel and have the potential for use in the development of functional products with beneficial health effects. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Recent advances of bone tissue engineering: carbohydrate and ceramic materials, fundamental properties and advanced biofabrication strategies ‒ a comprehensive review

Bone is a dynamic tissue that can always regenerate itself through remodeling to maintain biofunctionality. This tissue performs several vital physiological functions. However, bone scaffolds are required for critical-size damages and fractures, and these can be addressed by bone tissue engineering. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) has the potential to develop scaffolds for repairing critical-size damaged bone. BTE is a multidisciplinary engineered scaffold with the desired properties for repairing damaged bone tissue. Herein, we have provided an overview of the common carbohydrate polymers, fundamental structural, physicochemical, and biological properties, and fabrication techniques for bone tissue engineering. We also discussed advanced biofabrication strategies and provided the limitations and prospects by highlighting significant issues in bone tissue engineering. There are several review articles available on bone tissue engineering. However, we have provided a state-of-the-art review article that discussed recent progress and trends within the last 3-5 years by emphasizing challenges and future perspectives.

Machine learning and wearable sensors for automated Parkinson's disease diagnosis aid: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

The diagnosis of Parkinson's disease is currently based on clinical evaluation. Despite clinical hallmarks, unfortunately, the error rate is still significant. Low in-vivo diagnostic accuracy of clinical evaluation mainly relies on the lack of quantitative biomarkers for an objective motor performance assessment. Non-invasive technologies, such as wearable sensors, coupled with machine learning algorithms, assess quantitatively and objectively the motor performances, with possible benefits either for in-clinic and at-home settings. We conducted a systematic review of the literature on machine learning algorithms embedded in smart devices in Parkinson's disease diagnosis.

METHODS

Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we searched PubMed for articles published between December, 2007 and July, 2023, using a search string combining "Parkinson's disease" AND ("healthy" or "control") AND "diagnosis", within the Groups and Outcome domains. Additional search terms included "Algorithm", "Technology" and "Performance".

RESULTS

From 89 identified studies, 47 met the inclusion criteria based on the search string and four additional studies were included based on the Authors' expertise. Gait emerged as the most common parameter analysed by machine learning models, with Support Vector Machines as the prevalent algorithm. The results suggest promising accuracy with complex algorithms like Random Forest, Support Vector Machines, and K-Nearest Neighbours.

DISCUSSION

Despite the promise shown by machine learning algorithms, real-world applications may still face limitations. This review suggests that integrating machine learning with wearable sensors has the potential to improve Parkinson's disease diagnosis. These tools could provide clinicians with objective data, potentially aiding in earlier detection.

Hydrogen-treated CoCrMo alloy: a novel approach to enhance biocompatibility and mitigate inflammation in orthopedic implants

In recent decades, orthopedic implants have been widely used as materials to replace human bone tissue functions. Among these, metal implants play a crucial role. Metals with better chemical stability, such as stainless steel, titanium alloys, and cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloy, are commonly used for long-term applications. However, good chemical stability can result in poor tissue integration between the tissue and the implant, leading to potential inflammation risks. This study creates hydrogenated CoCrMo (H-CoCrMo) surfaces, which have shown promise as anti-inflammatory orthopedic implants. Using the electrochemical cathodic hydrogen-charging method, the surface of the CoCrMo alloy was hydrogenated, resulting in improved biocompatibility, reduced free radicals, and an anti-inflammatory response. Hydrogen diffusion to a depth of approximately 106 ± 27 nm on the surface facilitated these effects. This hydrogen-rich surface demonstrated a reduction of 85.2% in free radicals, enhanced hydrophilicity as evidenced by a decrease in a contact angle from 83.5 ± 1.9° to 52.4 ± 2.2°, and an increase of 11.4% in hydroxyapatite deposition surface coverage. The cell study results revealed a suppression of osteosarcoma cell activity to 50.8 ± 2.9%. Finally, the in vivo test suggested the promotion of new bone formation and a reduced inflammatory response. These findings suggest that electrochemical hydrogen charging can effectively modify CoCrMo surfaces, offering a potential solution for improving orthopedic implant outcomes through anti-inflammatory mechanisms.

Assessment of cranial reconstruction utilizing various implant materials: finite element study

The human head can sometimes experience impact loads that result in skull fractures or other injuries, leading to the need for a craniectomy. Cranioplasty is a procedure that involves replacing the removed portion with either autologous bone or alloplastic material. While titanium has traditionally been the preferred material for cranial implants due to its excellent properties and biocompatibility, its limitations have prompted the search for alternative materials. This research aimed to explore alternative materials to titanium for cranial implants in order to address the limitations of titanium implants and improve the performance of the cranioplasty process. A 3D model of a defective skull was reconstructed with a cranial implant, and the implant was simulated using various stiff and soft materials (such as alumina, zirconia, hydroxyapatite, zirconia-reinforced PMMA, and PMMA) as alternatives to titanium under 2000N impact forces. Alumina and zirconia implants were found to reduce stresses and strains on the skull and brain compared to titanium implants. However, PMMA implants showed potential for causing skull damage under current loading conditions. Additionally, PMMA and hydroxyapatite implants were prone to fracture. Despite these findings, none of the implants exceeded the limits for tensile and compressive stresses and strains on the brain. Zirconia-reinforced PMMA implants were also shown to reduce stresses and strains on the skull and brain compared to PMMA implants. Alumina and zirconia show promise as alternatives to titanium for the production of cranial implants. The use of alternative implant materials to titanium has the potential to enhance the success of cranial reconstruction by overcoming the limitations associated with titanium implants.

Licochalcone A: a review of its pharmacology activities and molecular mechanisms

Licorice, derived from the root of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch, is a key Traditional Chinese Medicine known for its detoxifying, spleen-nourishing, and qi-replenishing properties. Licochalcone A (Lico A), a significant component of licorice, has garnered interest due to its molecular versatility and receptor-binding affinity. This review explores the specific roles of Lico A in various diseases, providing new insights into its characteristics and guiding the rational use of licorice. Comprehensive literature searches using terms such as "licorice application" and "pharmacological activity of Lico A" were conducted across databases including CNKI, PubMed, and Google Scholar to gather relevant studies on Lico A's pharmacological activities and mechanisms. Lico A, a representative chalcone in licorice, targets specific mechanisms in anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activities. It also plays a role in post-transcriptional regulation. This review delineates the similarities and differences in the anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory mechanisms of Lico A, concluding that its effects on non-coding RNA through post-transcriptional mechanisms deserve further exploration.

Central blood pressure and peripheral augmentation index following acute submaximal arm versus leg exercise

BACKGROUND

Aerobic exercises like running and cycling may lower cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk through favorable effects on central blood pressure and vascular function. Arm ergometry is a popular exercise modality used in rehabilitation settings, but little is known regarding the central hemodynamic and vascular effects of this form of exercise.

PURPOSE

To compare the acute effects of leg versus arm exercise on central blood pressure and vascular function.

METHODS

Twenty-one participants (n = 11 female, Age 21 ± 3, BMI 24.5 ± 3.2 kg/m2) completed two visits to the Human Performance Laboratory. Central systolic blood pressure (cSBP), central diastolic blood pressure (cDBP), and peripheral augmentation index (pAIx) were measured using a brachial oscillometric blood pressure cuff with measures being taken before and after 20 min of acute moderate-intensity (submaximal) arm or leg cycling exercise.

RESULTS

There was a condition-by-time interaction for pAIx (p = 0.011). pAIx slightly increased following arm exercise but significantly decreased following leg exercise. There was a condition-by-time interaction for cDBP (p = 0.011). cDBP significantly decreased following arm exercise but increased immediately following leg exercise. There was no condition-by-time interaction for cSBP (p = 0.721). There were similar acute increases in cSBP immediately post-exercise for both conditions.

CONCLUSION

Arm exercise increased pAlx and decreased cDBP compared to leg exercise. As an increase in pAIx may increase left ventricular work and a reduction in cDBP may reduce coronary perfusion pressure, these findings suggest that a single bout of arm exercise may not have the same favorable acute effect on central hemodynamic load as a single bout of leg exercise.

Immunomodulatory Antibacterial Hydrogel for Wound Infection Management

Background

Wound healing has always been a focal point in clinical work. Bacterial infections and immune microenvironment disorders can both hinder normal wound healing. Current wound dressings only serve a covering function. Developing wound dressings with antibacterial and immunomodulatory functions is crucial for aiding wound healing. To address this issue, we have developed a hydrogel with antibacterial and immunomodulatory functions for managing infected wounds.

Methods

The present study describes a photo-crosslinked antibacterial hydrogel composed of curcumin, silver nanoparticles-loaded reduced graphene oxide, and silk fibroin methacryloyl for the treatment of infected wounds. The study assessed its antibacterial properties and its capacity to induce macrophage M2 polarization through in vitro and in vivo experiments.

Results

The hydrogel demonstrates robust antibacterial properties and enhances macrophage M2 polarization in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Moreover, it accelerates the healing of infected wounds in vivo by stimulating collagen deposition and angiogenesis.

Conclusion

Overall, this hydrogel shows great potential in managing wound infections.

Enhanced boxing punch impact with silicone cushioning

Introduction

Elastic cushioning materials protect human tissue from injury by absorbing impact energy and delaying its transfer. However, the potential compromise in force delivery to the hitting target remains unknown.

Methods

To examine if silicone cushioning compromises punch force delivery to a hitting target, a double-blind crossover trial with 12 elite boxers was conducted following material tests. Each boxer delivered five maximal punches under two conditions: silicone-hand wrapping and gauze-hand wrapping, in counterbalanced order, with a 3-day interval between sessions. Force distribution along the Z-axis indicated the punch's intended direction, while forces along the X and Y axes represented force dissipation toward unwanted direction.

Results

The material tests (based on ASTM International, West Conshohocken, PA, USA) demonstrated substantially higher compression to disruption for silicone than gauze of similar thickness. During the punching trials, the silicon-based hand wrapping exhibited slightly higher total force production (436 ± 33 N vs. 372 ± 12 N, p < 0.001) than the gauze-based hand wrapping. Moreover, force wastage, calculated as the sum of forces along the X and Y axes vs. the total force produced in percentage, was notably lower for silicone material (2.0% wastage) compared to gauze (3.8% wastage) (p < 0.001). The use of silicone materials lengthened the contact time between the punching fist and the hitting target from 35 ms to 50 ms (p < 0.001).

Conclusion

The elastic cushion does not compromise the force delivery of the boxing glove to the hitting target. Instead, it appears to allow for additional maneuvering time for alignment during the fist-target contact with higher impact.

Predictive Data Analytics in Telecare and Telehealth: Systematic Scoping Review

BACKGROUND

Telecare and telehealth are important care-at-home services used to support individuals to live more independently at home. Historically, these technologies have reactively responded to issues. However, there has been a recent drive to make better use of the data from these services to facilitate more proactive and predictive care.

OBJECTIVE

This review seeks to explore the ways in which predictive data analytics techniques have been applied in telecare and telehealth in at-home settings.

METHODS

The PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews) checklist was adhered to alongside Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework. English language papers published in MEDLINE, Embase, and Social Science Premium Collection between 2012 and 2022 were considered and results were screened against inclusion or exclusion criteria.

RESULTS

In total, 86 papers were included in this review. The types of analytics featuring in this review can be categorized as anomaly detection (n=21), diagnosis (n=32), prediction (n=22), and activity recognition (n=11). The most common health conditions represented were Parkinson disease (n=12) and cardiovascular conditions (n=11). The main findings include: a lack of use of routinely collected data; a dominance of diagnostic tools; and barriers and opportunities that exist, such as including patient-reported outcomes, for future predictive analytics in telecare and telehealth.

CONCLUSIONS

All papers in this review were small-scale pilots and, as such, future research should seek to apply these predictive techniques into larger trials. Additionally, further integration of routinely collected care data and patient-reported outcomes into predictive models in telecare and telehealth offer significant opportunities to improve the analytics being performed and should be explored further. Data sets used must be of suitable size and diversity, ensuring that models are generalizable to a wider population and can be appropriately trained, validated, and tested.

Nanoparticle co-delivery of carboplatin and PF543 restores platinum sensitivity in ovarian cancer models through inhibiting platinum-induced pro-survival pathway activation

Resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy is the major cause of poor prognosis and cancer-associated mortality in ovarian cancer patients, so novel therapeutic strategies to restore platinum sensitivity are needed to improve patient outcomes. Sphingosine Kinase (SphK) 1 is involved in regulating multiple pro-survival pathways, key mediators in the sensitivity of tumor cells toward platinum. By encapsulating CBP and the SphK1 inhibitor PF543 in PLGA (poly lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles, a dual-drug delivery system (C/PNPs) was formed to simultaneously deliver CBP and PF543. The physicochemical characteristics, cell uptake rate and biodistribution behavior of C/PNPs were evaluated. Then the anti-tumor ability of C/PNPs in vitro and in vivo was further investigated. The C/PNPs could deliver CBP and PF543 simultaneously to a platinum-insensitive cell line (SKOV3) both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, benefiting from the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect of PLGA NPs, C/PNPs exhibited an improved tumor region accumulation. As a result, a synergistic anti-tumor effect was found in the SKOV3 tumor-bearing mice, with tumor volume inhibiting rates of 84.64% and no side effects in major organs. The mechanistic studies confirmed that the inhibition of SphK1 by PF543 sensitized SKOV3 cells to CBP chemotherapy, partly by inhibiting the CBP-induced activation of pro-survival pathways, including ERK, AKT and STAT3 signaling. Our study reveals that C/PNPs can serve as an efficient dual-drug delivery system to restore platinum sensitivity in ovarian cancer models partly through inhibiting platinum-induced pro-survival pathway activation.

A Mesenchymal stem cell Aging Framework, from Mechanisms to Strategies

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are extensively researched for therapeutic applications in tissue engineering and show significant potential for clinical use. Intrinsic or extrinsic factors causing senescence may lead to reduced proliferation, aberrant differentiation, weakened immunoregulation, and increased inflammation, ultimately limiting the potential of MSCs. It is crucial to comprehend the molecular pathways and internal processes responsible for the decline in MSC function due to senescence in order to devise innovative approaches for rejuvenating senescent MSCs and enhancing MSC treatment. We investigate the main molecular processes involved in senescence, aiming to provide a thorough understanding of senescence-related issues in MSCs. Additionally, we analyze the most recent advancements in cutting-edge approaches to combat MSC senescence based on current research. We are curious whether the aging process of stem cells results in a permanent "memory" and if cellular reprogramming may potentially revert the aging epigenome to a more youthful state.

Intelligent devices for assessing essential tremor: a comprehensive review

Essential tremor (ET) stands as the most prevalent movement disorder, characterized by rhythmic and involuntary shaking of body parts. Achieving an accurate and comprehensive assessment of tremor severity is crucial for effectively diagnosing and managing ET. Traditional methods rely on clinical observation and rating scales, which may introduce subjective biases and hinder continuous evaluation of disease progression. Recent research has explored new approaches to quantifying ET. A promising method involves the use of intelligent devices to facilitate objective and quantitative measurements. These devices include inertial measurement units, electromyography, video equipment, and electronic handwriting boards, and more. Their deployment enables real-time monitoring of human activity data, featuring portability and efficiency. This capability allows for more extensive research in this field and supports the shift from in-lab/clinic to in-home monitoring of ET symptoms. Therefore, this review provides an in-depth analysis of the application, current development, potential characteristics, and roles of intelligent devices in assessing ET.

Characterization of dental light-curing resin composites incorporating multiple modified low-shrink monomers

OBJECTIVE

Polymerization shrinkage poses a significant challenge in dental resin composites. The objective of this study is to introduce spiroorthocarbonate monomer 3,9-dimethylene-1,3,5,7-tetraoxa-spiro[5,5]undecane (BMSOC) and epoxy resin monomer 3,4-epoxycyclohexylmethyl-3,4-epoxycyclohexane carboxylate (ECHM-ECHC) into bisphenol-S-bis(3-methacrylato-2-hydroxy propyl)ether (BisS-GMA) based resin composites to develop composites with reduced shrinkage properties.

METHODS

BMSOC and BisS-GMA were synthesized and thoroughly mixed with ECHM-ECHC, followed by inorganic fillers and photoinitiators. Based on the composition of the resin matrix, five groups of experimental composites were prepared, with traditional bisphenol A-dimethacrylate glycidyl ester (Bis-GMA)/triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) based composite serving as the control. The polymerization properties, including degree of conversion (DC) and polymerization shrinkage (PS), as well as marginal microleakage, wettability, flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), and biocompatibility were evaluated.

RESULTS

The results demonstrated that compared with the control group, the PS of BisS-GMA based composites containing BMSOC and ECHM-ECHC were significantly reduced (P < 0.05), and the lowest PS (0.96 ± 0.08 %) was observed when the ratio of BisS-GMA: (Epoxy + BMSOC) was 4:6. Additionally, the experimental composites also exhibited improved DC, minimal microleakage, low hydrophilicity, enhanced mechanical properties, qualified in vivo biocompatibility, and slight/moderate in vitro biocompatibility.

SIGNIFICANCE

The resin composites incorporating multiple modified low-shrink monomers are promising for dental applications to prevent various clinical problems caused by PS and extend restoration longevity.

Biomechanical Effects on the Prostheses and Vertebrae of Three-Level Hybrid Surgery: A Finite Element Study

PURPOSE

Three-level hybrid surgery (HS) consisting of cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) has been partly used for the treatment of multi-level cervical degenerative disc disease (CDDD). The complications related to the implants and the collapse of the surgical vertebral bodies had been reported in multi-level anterior cervical spine surgery. Thus, this study aimed to explore the biomechanical effects on the prostheses and vertebrae in three-level HS.

METHODS

A FE model of cervical spine (C0-T1) was constructed. Five surgical models were developed. They were FAF model (ACDF-CDA-ACDF), AFA model (CDA-ACDF-CDA), FFF model (three-level ACDF), SF model (single-level ACDF), and SA model (single-level CDA). A 75-N follower load and 1.0-N·m moment was applied to produce flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation.

RESULTS

Compared with the intact model, the range of motion (ROM) of total cervical spine in FAF model decreased by 34.54%, 54.48%, 31.76%, and 27.14%, respectively, in flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation, which were lower than those in FFF model and higher than those in AFA model. The ROMs of CDA segments in FAF and AFA models were similar to the intact model and SA model. Compared with the intact model, the ROMs at C3/4 segment in FFF model increased from 5.71% to 7.85%, and increased from 5.31% to 6.81% at C7/T1 segment, following by FAF model, then the FAF model. The maximum interface pressures of the Prestige-LP in FAF model were similar to SA model, however the corresponding values were increased in AFA model. The maximum interface pressures of the Zero-P were increased in FAF and AFA model compared with those in SF and FFF models. The stress was mainly distributed on the screws. In AFA model, the maximum pressures of the ball and trough articulation in superior and inferior Prestige-LP were all increased compared with those in SA and FAF model. In FFF model, the maximum pressures of the vertebrae were higher than those in other models. The stress was mainly distributed on the anterior area of the vertebral bodies.

CONCLUSIONS

HS seemed to be more suitable than ACDF for the surgical treatment of three-level CDDD in consideration of the biomechanical effects, especially for the two-level CDA and one-level ACDF construct. But a more appropriate CDA prosthesis should be explored in the future.

Migraine aura discrimination using machine learning: an fMRI study during ictal and interictal periods

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies on migraine with aura are challenging due to the rarity of patients with triggered cases. This study optimized methodologies to explore differences in ictal and interictal spatiotemporal activation patterns based on visual stimuli using fMRI in two patients with unique aura triggers. Both patients underwent separate fMRI sessions during the ictal and interictal periods. The Gaussian Process Classifier (GPC) was used to differentiate these periods by employing a machine learning temporal embedding approach and spatiotemporal activation patterns based on visual stimuli. When restricted to visual and occipital regions, GPC had an improved performance, with accuracy rates for patients A and B of roughly 86-90% and 77-81%, respectively (p < 0.01). The algorithm effectively differentiated visual stimulation and rest periods and identified times when aura symptoms manifested, as evident from the varying predicted probabilities in the GPC models. These findings contribute to our understanding of the role of visual processing and brain activity patterns in migraine with aura and the significance of temporal embedding techniques in examining aura phenomena. This finding has implications for diagnostic tools and therapeutic techniques, especially for patients suffering from aura symptoms.

Zebrafish live imaging: a strong weapon in anticancer drug discovery and development

Developing anticancer drugs is a complex and time-consuming process. The inability of current laboratory models to reflect important aspects of the tumor in vivo limits anticancer medication research. Zebrafish is a rapid, semi-automated in vivo screening platform that enables the use of non-invasive imaging methods to monitor morphology, survival, developmental status, response to drugs, locomotion, or other behaviors. Zebrafish models are widely used in drug discovery and development for anticancer drugs, especially in conjunction with live imaging techniques. Herein, we concentrated on the use of zebrafish live imaging in anticancer therapeutic research, including drug screening, efficacy assessment, toxicity assessment, and mechanism studies. Zebrafish live imaging techniques have been used in numerous studies, but this is the first time that these techniques have been comprehensively summarized and compared side by side. Finally, we discuss the hypothesis of Zebrafish Composite Model, which may provide future directions for zebrafish imaging in the field of cancer research.

Evaluation of physiological responses to mental workload in n-back and arithmetic tasks

Working memory tasks, such as n-back and arithmetic tasks, are frequently used in studying mental workload. The present study investigated and compared the sensitivity of several physiological measures at three levels of difficulty of n-back and arithmetic tasks. The results showed significant differences in fixation duration and pupil diameter among three task difficulty levels for both n-back and arithmetic tasks. Pupil diameters increase with increasing mental workload, whereas fixation duration decreases. Blink duration and heart rate (HR) were significantly increased as task difficulty increased in the n-back task, while root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) and standard deviation of R-R intervals (SDNN) were significantly decreased in the arithmetic task. On the other hand, blink rate and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) were not sensitive enough to assess the differences in task difficulty for both tasks. All significant physiological measures yielded significant differences between low and high task difficulty except for SDNN.Practitioner summary: This study aimed to assess the sensitivity levels of several physiological measures of mental workload in n-back and arithmetic tasks. It showed that pupil diameter was the most sensitive in both tasks. This study also found that most physiological indices are sensitive to an extreme change in task difficulty levels.

Development and Characterization of Heparin-Containing Hydrogel/3D-Printed Scaffold Composites for Craniofacial Reconstruction

Regeneration of cartilage and bone tissues remains challenging in tissue engineering due to their complex structures, and the need for both mechanical support and delivery of biological repair stimuli. Therefore, the goal of this study was to develop a composite scaffold platform for anatomic chondral and osteochondral repair using heparin-based hydrogels to deliver small molecules within 3D-printed porous scaffolds that provide structure, stiffness, and controlled biologic delivery. We designed a mold-injection system to combine hydrolytically degradable hydrogels and 3D-printed scaffolds that could be employed rapidly (< 30 min) in operating room settings (~23 °C). Micro-CT analysis demonstrated the effectiveness of our injection system through homogeneously distributed hydrogel within the pores of the scaffolds. Hydrogels and composite scaffolds exhibited efficient loading (~94%) of a small positively charged heparin-binding molecule (crystal violet) with sustained release over 14 days and showed high viability of encapsulated porcine chondrocytes over 7 days. Compression testing demonstrated nonlinear viscoelastic behavior where tangent stiffness decreased with scaffold porosity (porous scaffold tangent stiffness: 70%: 4.9 MPa, 80%: 1.5 MPa, and 90%: 0.20 MPa) but relaxation was not affected. Lower-porosity scaffolds (70%) showed stiffness similar to lower ranges of trabecular bone (4-8 MPa) while higher-porosity scaffolds (80% and 90%) showed stiffness similar to auricular cartilage (0.16-2 MPa). Ultimately, this rapid composite scaffold fabrication method may be employed in the operating room and utilized to control biologic delivery within load-bearing scaffolds.

Distinguishing essential tremor from Parkinson's disease: clinical and experimental tools

INTRODUCTION

Essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are the most common causes of tremor and the most prevalent movement disorders, with overlapping clinical features that can lead to diagnostic challenges, especially in the early stages.

AREAS COVERED

In the present paper, the authors review the clinical and experimental studies and emphasized the major aspects to differentiate between ET and PD, with particular attention to cardinal phenomenological features of these two conditions. Ancillary and experimental techniques, including neurophysiology, neuroimaging, fluid biomarker evaluation, and innovative methods, are also discussed for their role in differential diagnosis between ET and PD. Special attention is given to investigations and tools applicable in the early stages of the diseases, when the differential diagnosis between the two conditions is more challenging. Furthermore, the authors discuss knowledge gaps and unsolved issues in the field.

EXPERT OPINION

Distinguishing ET and PD is crucial for prognostic purposes and appropriate treatment. Additionally, accurate diagnosis is critical for optimizing clinical and experimental research on pathophysiology and innovative therapies. In a few years, integrated technologies could enable accurate, reliable diagnosis from early disease stages or prodromal stages in at-risk populations, but further research combining different techniques is needed.

Silver phosphate-modified carbonate apatite honeycomb scaffolds for anti-infective and pigmentation-free bone tissue engineering

Bone regeneration using synthetic materials has a high rate of surgical site infection, resulting in severe pain for patients and often requiring revision surgery. We propose Ag3PO4-based surface modification and structural control of scaffolds for preventing infections in bone regeneration. We demonstrated the differences in toxicity and antibacterial activity between in vitro and in vivo studies and determined the optimal silver content in terms of overall anti-infection effects, bone regeneration, toxicity, and pigmentation. A honeycomb structure comprising osteoconductive and resorbable carbonate apatite (CAp) was used as the base scaffold. CAp in the scaffold surface was partially replaced with different concentrations of Ag3PO4 via controlled dissolution-precipitation reactions in an AgNO3 solution. Both bone regeneration and infection prevention were achieved at 860-2300 ppm of silver. Despite the absence of Ag3PO4, honeycomb scaffolds were less susceptible to infection, even under conditions where infection occurs in clinically used three-dimensional porous scaffolds. Regardless of in vitro cytotoxicity at >5200 ppm of silver, increasing the silver content to 21,000 ppm did not adversely affect in vivo bone formation and scaffold resorption or cause acute systemic toxicity. Rather, bone formation was enhanced with 5200 ppm of silver. However, pigmentation was observed at that concentration. Hence, we concluded that the optimal silver concentration range is 860-2300 ppm for anti-infective and pigmentation-free bone regeneration. Bone regeneration was achieved via surface modification, resulting in the rapid release of silver ions immediately after implantation, followed by gradual release over several months. The scaffold structure may also aid in preventing bacterial growth within the scaffolds.

Haptic coordination: Squeezing a vibrating stress ball decreases anxiety and arousal

We evaluated the effect of haptic coordination on anxiety and arousal. Participants looked at a stressful or calming image and then repeatedly squeezed a vibrating stress ball for 20 s. Using a pre-post paradigm with a control group, we showed that squeezing the vibrating ball reduced anxiety and arousal, as assessed by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and electrodermal activity, respectively. The stability of haptic coordination was manipulated by varying the detuning between the spontaneous squeezing frequency and the intrinsic frequency of ball vibration. Coordination stability affected arousal and stress affected stability. The data were discussed in the light of Kahneman's attentional resource-sharing model.

Applications of Bioactive Strontium Compounds in Dentistry

Divalent cations have captured the interest of researchers in biomedical and dental fields due to their beneficial effects on bone formation. These metallic elements are similar to trace elements found in human bone. Strontium is a divalent cation commonly found in various biomaterials. Since strontium has a radius similar to calcium, it has been used to replace calcium in many calcium-containing biomaterials. Strontium has the ability to inhibit bone resorption and increase bone deposition, making it useful in the treatment of osteoporosis. Strontium has also been used as a radiopacifier in dentistry and has been incorporated into a variety of dental materials to improve their radiopacity. Furthermore, strontium has been shown to improve the antimicrobial and mechanical properties of dental materials, promote enamel remineralization, alleviate dentin hypersensitivity, and enhance dentin regeneration. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive review of the applications of strontium in dentistry.

The effect of surface treatment and thermal aging on the bonding of clear aligner attachments to provisional resin-based material: shear bond strength analysis

Objectives

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the shear bond strength (SBS) of clear aligner attachments bonded to Bis-acryl provisional crowns.

Methods

120 cylindrical bisacrylic composite material (ProTemp type) specimens were prepared and divided into six groups (n = 20) based on surface treatment, control: (no treatment); super coarse grit diamond bur, carbide bur, alumina-blasting, non-thermal plasma treatment, and Er:YAG laser treatment. The features of treated surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A flowable composite resin (Transbond XT; 3M Unitek) was bonded to the specimens forming the attachment. Half of specimens were subjected to thermal cycling (5,000 cycles). SBS was measured before and after thermal cycling. Each specimen was loaded at the attachment/resin interface at a speed of 0.5 mm/min until failure. The nature of the failure was analyzed using the composite remnants index (CRI). Two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD were used for data analysis α =  0.5. For CRI scores analysis, Kruskal-Wallis test and Dunn's multiple comparison were used as post-hoc test.

Results

SEM analysis showed that all surface treatments altered surface properties and increase surface bonding area. The specimens treated with plasma, Er:YAG laser, and alumina-blasting had higher SBS values before and after thermal cycling. In comparison to control plasma, Er:YAG laser, and alumina-blasting showed a significant increase in SBS (P < 0.001) while carbide and diamond bur groups showed no significant differences (P > 0.05). Thermal cycling significantly decreased the SBS of control, carbide bur, diamond bur, and Er:YAG laser while no significant effect of alumina-blasting and plasma group. Er:YAG laser and plasma groups significantly exhibited more dominance for scores 2 and score 3 and the absence of score 0.

Conclusion

Alumina-blasting, Er:YAG laser, or non-thermal plasma surface treatments increased the shear bond strength between clear aligner attachments and resin-based restorations.

Novel nano composites from Citrus limon and Citrullus colocynthis agricultural wastes for biomedical applications

In recent years, academic and industrial research has focused on using agro-waste for energy and new material production to promote sustainable development and lessen environmental issues. In this study, new nanocomposites based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-Starch using two affordable agricultural wastes, Citrus limon peels (LP) and Citrullus colocynthis (Cc) shells and seeds powders with different concentrations (2, 5, 10, and 15 wt%) as bio-fillers were prepared. The nanocomposites were characterized by Dielectric Spectroscopy, Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and water swelling ratio. The antimicrobial properties of the nanocomposites against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans were examined to investigate the possibility of using such composites in biomedical applications. Additionally, the biocompatibility of the composites on human normal fibroblast cell lines (HFB4) was tested using MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. The results demonstrate that the filler type and concentration strongly affect the film's properties. The permittivity ε', dielectric loss ε″ and conductivity σdc increased by increasing filler content but still in the insulators range that recommend such composites to be used in the insulation purposes. Both bio fillers control the water uptake, and the samples filled with LP were more water resistant. The polyvinyl alcohol/starch incorporated with 5 wt% LP and Cc have antimicrobial effects against all the tested microorganisms. Increasing the filler content has a negative impact on cell viability.

A Combination Technique of N-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate and Minimal Coils with Flow Control for Parent Artery Occlusion of a Giant Internal Carotid Artery Aneurysm: A Technical Note

Parent artery occlusion for large or giant internal carotid artery aneurysms remains a necessary procedure in the era of flow diverters. Endovascular parent artery occlusion is currently performed using detachable balloons or coils, which are difficult to obtain or costly. At our institution, we have devised a technique for combining n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate and coils with flow control to solve this problem. Patients who underwent parent artery occlusion for large or giant internal carotid artery aneurysms with a follow-up period of more than 12 months were included. Imaging outcomes were evaluated for complete or incomplete aneurysmal occlusion and with or without aneurysmal shrinkage. The clinical outcome was based on changes in the modified Rankin Scale. Ten patients (ten aneurysms) were included. Their average age and average follow-up period were 68.4 years and 36 months, respectively. Complete occlusion and favorable clinical outcome were observed in all cases. The parent artery occlusion using a combination of coils and n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate with flow control technique is effective for both imaging and clinical outcomes.

Effectiveness of resin infiltration in the management of anterior teeth affected by molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH): A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effectiveness of resin infiltration in improving the aesthetic appearance of anterior teeth affected by molar-incisor hypomineralisation (MIH).

DATA SOURCES

PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched from 2009 to 2024. The protocol was registered in the International Prospective Database of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO CRD42023461909).

STUDY SELECTION

Interventional or comparative studies comparing resin infiltration and other treatments in MIH-affected anterior teeth were included. The risk of bias was evaluated using the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomised Studies of Interventions (ROBINS-I tool) and the Risk of Bias 2 (RoB 2.0) tool. Meta-analysis utilized a random-effects model.

DATA

Eighteen studies met the inclusion criteria, and twelve were included in the meta-analysis. Resin infiltration showed a higher color difference (ΔE) before and after treatment (mean difference 2.21, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 0.04-4.38, p < 0.001, I2 = 98.61 %, p < 0.001) and better optical improvement (standardised mean difference [SMD] 2.68; 95 %CI 0.30-5.06; p = 0.027, I2 = 97.8 %, p < 0.001) compared to controls. The estimated success rate based on dentist assessment was 92 % (95 %CI 88-95 %, I2 = 17.92 %, p = 0.06). Non-randomised trials showed high (8/14) or moderate (6/14) risk of bias, mainly from confounding and selection issues. Randomised trials had high risk (1/3) or some concerns (2/3) due to missing data.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that resin infiltration significantly improves aesthetic outcomes in MIH-affected anterior teeth, as evidenced by higher colour difference and optical improvement compared to controls.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

While our study shows promising results for resin infiltration, including high success rates and aesthetic improvements, larger-scale studies with longer follow-up periods are necessary to confirm these findings and assess its long-term efficacy.
