Abstract
Gold nanostars, possessing multiple sharp spikes, have emerged as promising plasmonic particles in the field of ultrasensitive sensing. We have developed a water-based method for high-yield synthesis of size-tunable anisotropic gold nanoparticles with a varying number of spiky surface protrusions, and performed systematic experimental and theoretical analyses of the optical properties of the single gold nanostars by characterizing them simultaneously with scanning electron microscopy and dark-field scattering spectroscopy. The morphologies and corresponding scattering spectra of the individual gold nanostars have been compared with electromagnetic simulations of the plasmonic resonances utilizing the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The study provides a correlation between the experimental and calculated scattering spectra and charge distributions of the different plasmon modes in the individual gold nanostars with varying numbers and relative orientations of surface protrusions. Our results provide guidelines for choosing gold nanostars with a proper number of spikes and appropriate dimensions of the core and arms for particular plasmonic applications as well as for further developing preparation methods of multispiked metal nanoparticles.

Abstract
In this contribution, we report an effective and relatively simple route to grow triangular flat-top silver nanoparticles (NPs) directly on a solid substrate from smaller NPs through a wet photochemical synthesis. The method consists of fixing small, preformed nanotriangles (NTs) on a substrate and subsequently irradiating them with light in a silver seed solution. Furthermore, the use of linearly polarized light allows for exerting control on the growth direction of the silver nanotriangles on the substrate. Evidence for the role of surface plasmon resonances in governing the growth of the NTs is obtained by employing linear polarized light. Thus, this study demonstrates that light-induced, directional synthesis of nanoparticles on solid substrates is in reach, which is of utmost importance for plasmonic applications.

Abstract
We describe a method of controlled evaporation on a textured substrate for self-assembling and shaping gold-nanorod-based materials. Tridimensional wall features are formed over areas as large as several square millimeters. Furthermore, analyses by small-angle X-ray scattering and scanning electron microscopy techniques demonstrate that colloids are locally ordered as a smectic B phase. Such crystallization is in fact possible because we could finely adjust the nanoparticle charge, knowledge that additionally enables tuning the lattice parameters. In the future, the type of ordered self-assemblies of gold nanorods we have prepared could be used for amplifying optical signals.

Abstract
A functional ionic liquid (IL) (IL=4-acetyl-N-butyl pyridinium hexafluorophosphate) was synthesized and conjugated with low toxicity of nanospheres (RBITC@SiO(2)), forming a new kind of fluorescent core-shell ellipsoidal RBITC@SiO(2)-IL nanoparticle. In vitro assay results indicate that particle shape plays an important role in cellular interactions with NPs. Furthermore, the positively charged ellipsoidal RBITC@SiO(2)-IL nanoparticles can enter into HeLa cells and induce the cells to condense, split and decrease on the oxygen consumption. The enhanced cell image and decrease of mitochondria potential indicate that the ellipsoidal RBITC@SiO(2)-IL nanoparticles could be uptaken by HeLa cells through mitochondria involved path. Experimental results give us a new path to design nano-medicines through ionic liquid modified silica nanoparticles to target mitochondria.

Abstract
The first use of non-centrosymmetric Janus Au-TiO(2) photocatalysts in efficient, plasmon-enhanced visible-light hydrogen generation is demonstrated. The intense localization of plasmonic near-fields close to the Au-TiO(2) interface, coupled with optical transitions involving localized electronic states in amorphous TiO(2) brings about enhanced optical absorption and the generation of electron-hole pairs for photocatalysis.

Abstract
This paper reports a facile method to prepare gold nanocubes with an average size length of 13 ± 2 nm, a shape selectivity >90%, and a very good reproducibility. The gold nanocubes were prepared by photocatalytic reduction of Au(III) using a cationic, water soluble porphyrin as the photocatalyst, and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as the capping agent. The synthesis is performed in water, at pH 7, and room temperature. The nanocubes were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray phototelectron spectroscopy. Shape selectivity for the synthesis of nanocubes is due to a different rate of growth of the (100) and (111) facets of the nanoparticles, and such control in this synthesis is achieved by careful selection of the initial gold precursor for the photocatalytic cycle.

Abstract
Palladium and platinum nanocrystals are synthesized by the liquid-liquid phase transfer method, which is a suitable way to produce anisotropic metallic nanoparticles and control their shape at the nanoscopic scale. The process leading to shape control is, however, quite complex as all the physical and chemical parameters could play an important role. In this paper, we have demonstrated the primordial role of the dissolved gases (O(2), H(2), N(2)) in the solvent medium on the nanomorphology of platinum and palladium nanocrystals. In particular, it shows the specific role of H(2) in the formation of platinum nanocubes.

Abstract
A plasmonic Ag/AgBr nanohybrid has been synthesized by in situ thermal reduction of AgBr nanoparticles in polyols. This directly converted Ag/AgBr shows significant absorption over the full visible spectrum. The enhanced light absorption in the spectral region of 450 nm to 800 nm was due to the plasmonic nanosized Ag grown on the surface of AgBr nanoparticles with mixed morphologies and increased sizes. Under visible light irradiation, the plasmonic Ag/AgBr exhibits high activity and stability for the photodegradation of organic pollutants, e.g. methylene blue. The contribution of the SPR and its synergistic effect with the photosensitive AgBr in the photocatalytic activity were verified. Based on the plasmon-mediated charge injection and the band structure of the metal-semiconductor heterojunction, a mechanism of the plasmon synergistically enhanced photocatalytic process was proposed.

Abstract
We report a near-field imaging study of colloidal gold nanocubes. This is accomplished through a photochemical imaging method in which molecular displacements are vectorial in nature, enabling sensitivity to the polarization of the optical near-field of the nanocubes. We analyze the confinement of both electromagnetic hot and "cold" spots with a resolution of λ/35 and emphasize the particularly high spatial confinement of cold spots. The concept of a cold spot complements the well-known electromagnetic hot spot but can have significant advantages. The application of the ultraconfined cold spots to high resolution imaging and spectroscopy is discussed.

Abstract
Gold (Au) nanoparticles, particularly nanorods, are actively employed as imaging probes because of their special nonblinking and nonbleaching absorption, scattering, and emitting properties that arise from the excitation of surface plasmons. Herein, we report a novel sensing method that detects feature orientation at the nanoscale via the defocused imaging of individual Au nanorods (AuNRs) with an ordinary wide-field optical microscope. By simultaneously recording defocused images and two-photon luminescence intensities for a large number of individual AuNRs, we correlate their defocused images with their three-dimensional spatial orientations. The spatial orientation of many individual AuNRs can be monitored in situ and in real-time within a single frame, enabling its use as a technique for high-throughput sensing. The probe size can be as small as several nanometers, which is highly desirable for minimization of any potential interference from the probe itself. Furthermore, the sensing property is insensitive to the excitation polarization and the distribution of the probe aspect ratio, which allows AuNRs of any length within a proper regime to be used as orientation sensors without changing the laser frequency and polarization. These unique features make the orientation probes proposed here outstanding candidates for optical imaging and sensing in materials science and biological applications.

Abstract
Understanding the control of the optical and plasmonic properties of unique nanosystems--gold nanostars--both experimentally and theoretically permits superior design and fabrication for biomedical applications. Here, we present a new, surfactant-free synthesis method of biocompatible gold nanostars with adjustable geometry such that the plasmon band can be tuned into the near-infrared region 'tissue diagnostic window', which is most suitable for in vivo imaging. Theoretical modelling was performed for multiple-branched 3D nanostars and yielded absorption spectra in good agreement with experimental results. The plasmon band shift was attributed to variations in branch aspect ratio, and the plasmon band intensifies with increasing branch number, branch length, and overall star size. Nanostars showed an extremely strong two-photon photoluminescence (TPL) process. The TPL imaging of wheat-germ agglutinin (WGA) functionalized nanostars on BT549 breast cancer cells and of PEGylated nanostars circulating in the vasculature, examined through a dorsal window chamber in vivo in laboratory mouse studies, demonstrated that gold nanostars can serve as an efficient contrast agent for biological imaging applications.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Gold nanostars offer unique plasmon properties that efficiently transduce photon energy into heat for photothermal therapy. Nanostars, with their small core size and multiple long thin branches, exhibit high absorption cross-sections that are tunable in the near-infrared region with relatively low scattering effect, making them efficient photothermal transducers. Here, we demonstrate particle tracking and photothermal ablation both in vitro and in vivo. Using SKBR3 breast cancer cells incubated with bare nanostars, we observed photothermal ablation within 5 minutes of irradiation (980-nm continuous-wave laser, 15 W/cm2). On a mouse injected systemically with PEGylated nanostars for 2 days, extravasation of nanostars was observed and localized photothermal ablation was demonstrated on a dorsal window chamber within 10 minutes of irradiation (785-nm continuous-wave laser, 1.1 W/cm2). These preliminary results of plasmon-enhanced localized hyperthermia are encouraging and have illustrated the potential of gold nanostars as efficient photothermal agents in cancer therapy. FROM THE CLINICAL EDITOR Gold nanostars are tunable in the near-infrared region with low scattering, thus enable photothermal therapy. Encouraging preliminary results of plasmon-enhanced localized hyperthermia both in vitro and in vivo demonstrate that Au nanostars may be efficient photothermal agents for cancer therapy.

Abstract
The shape control of noble metal nanocrystals is crucial to their optical properties and catalysis applications. In this Progress Report, the recent progress of shape-controlled synthesis of Pd and Pt nanostructures assisted by small adsorbates is summarized. The use of small strong adsorbates (e.g., I(-) , CO, amines) makes it possible to fabricate Pd and Pt nanostructures with not only well-defined surface structure but also morphologies that have not been achieved by other synthetic strategies. The roles of small adsorbates in shape control of Pd and Pt nanocrystals are discussed in the Report. Also presented in the Report are unique optical and catalytic properties of several Pd and Pt nanostructures (e.g., ultrathin Pd nanosheets, concave Pt octapod, concave Pd tetrahedra), as well as their bioapplications, to demonstrate the power of using small strong adsorbates in the shape control of Pt and Pd nanostructures.

Abstract
We demonstrate scaffolding of plasmonic nanoparticles by topological defects induced by colloidal microspheres to match their surface boundary conditions with a uniform far-field alignment in a liquid crystal host. Displacing energetically costly liquid crystal regions of reduced order, anisotropic nanoparticles with concave or convex shapes not only stably localize in defects but also self-orient with respect to the microsphere surface. Using laser tweezers, we manipulate the ensuing nanoparticle-microsphere colloidal dimers, probing the strength of elastic binding and demonstrating self-assembly of hierarchical colloidal superstructures such as chains and arrays.

Abstract
We report a general approach to bimodify gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with two different DNA strands via DNA template reaction. Two thioctic acid modified DNA strands, one at 5' end and one at 3' end, were attached to GNPs through bivalent thiol-gold bond. By sequence design, assemblies of 5 nm GNPs chains, 10 nm GNPs chains and alternative arrangement of 5 and 10 nm GNPs could be achieved. Gel electrophoresis, transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-vis spectra were used to characterize the assemblies. It is believed that this new kind of bimodified GNPs with two different DNA strands at different ends would enrich the toolbox of DNA-GNP conjugates and provide diverse selectivity for further assembly.

Abstract
The ferroxidase activity of horse spleen apoferritin (HSAF) is increased by nine-fold in the presence of platinum nanoparticles. HSAF was mixed with varying concentrations of K2PtCl4 followed by a 20-fold concentration of sodium borohydride to afford Pt:HSAF nanoparticle complexes in a ratio of between 1:250 and 1:4000. Typical colour changes, from colourless or pale yellow to brown, occurred that were dependent on the amount of platinum present. These complexes were characterized by UV/vis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that the size of nanoparticles increased as the molar ratio of platinum to HSAF increased with an average size diameter of 2-6 nm generated with HSAF:platinum molar ratios of 1:250-1:4000. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra showed no distinct changes in the structure of HSAF but confirmed that the nanoparticles were attached to the protein. The effect of platinum nanoparticles on the ferroxidase activity of HSAF showed a specific activity of 360 ρmol min(-1) mg(-1), (nine-fold increase over the control) at the molar ratio of HSAF:platinum nanoparticles of 1:1000.

Abstract
AbstractIn order to meet the challenges of effective healthcare, the clinical laboratory is constantly striving to improve testing sensitivity while reducing the required time and cost. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are proposed as one of the most promising tools to meet such goals. They have unique optophysical properties which enable sensitive detection of biomarkers, and are easily amenable to modification for use in different assay formats including immunoassays and molecular assays. Additionally, their preparation is relatively simple and their detection methods are quite versatile. AuNPs are showing substantial promise for effective practical applications and commercial utilization is already underway. This article covers the principles of preparation of AuNPs and their use for development of different diagnostic platforms.

Abstract
Organic nanoparticles made of a push-pull triarylamine dye with an average diameter of 60 nm, were prepared by reprecipitation. We study their photophysical properties by a combination of photothermal and fluorescence microscopy. Photothermal contrast provides a quantitative measure of the number of absorbers. The size of nanoparticles estimated from the absorption measurements was compared with sizes measured by AFM. Fluorescence and absorption microscopy provide quantum yield on the single-particle level as a function of excitation intensity. The quantum yield strongly decreases at high intensities because of singlet-singlet or singlet-triplet annihilation. We also report the formation of molecular thin layers and of labyrinth-shaped structures on glass substrates, presumably induced by dewetting.

Abstract
Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with controlled geometrical, optical, and surface chemical properties are the subject of intensive studies and applications in biology and medicine. To date, the ever increasing diversity of published examples has included genomics and biosensorics, immunoassays and clinical chemistry, photothermolysis of cancer cells and tumors, targeted delivery of drugs and antigens, and optical bioimaging of cells and tissues with state-of-the-art nanophotonic detection systems. This critical review is focused on the application of GNP conjugates to biomedical diagnostics and analytics, photothermal and photodynamic therapies, and delivery of target molecules. Distinct from other published reviews, we present a summary of the immunological properties of GNPs. For each of the above topics, the basic principles, recent advances, and current challenges are discussed (508 references).

Abstract
Porous platinum is of high technological importance due to its various applications in fuel cells, sensors, stimulation electrodes, mechanical actuators and catalysis in general. Based on a discussion of the general principles behind the reduction of platinum salts and corresponding deposition processes this article discusses techniques available for platinum electrode fabrication. The numerous, different strategies available to fabricate platinum electrodes are reviewed and discussed in the context of their tuning parameters, strengths and weaknesses. These strategies comprise bottom-up approaches as well as top-down approaches. In bottom-up approaches nanoparticles are synthesized in a fi rst step by chemical, photochemical or sonochemical means followed by an electrode formation step by e.g. thin fi lm technology or network formation to create a contiguous and conducting solid electrode structure. In top-down approaches fabrication starts with an already conductive electrode substrate. Corresponding strategies enable the fabrication of substrate-based electrodes by e.g. electrodeposition or the fabrication of self-supporting electrodes by dealloying. As a further top-down strategy, this review describes methods to decorate porous metals other than platinum with a surface layer of platinum. This way, fabrication methods not performable with platinum can be applied to the fabrication of platinum electrodes with the special benefit of low platinum consumption.

Abstract
Highly stable dispersions of nanosized silver particles were synthesized using a straightforward, cost-effective, and ecofriendly method. Nontoxic glucose was utilized as a reducing agent and poly-α, γ, L-glutamic acid (PGA), a naturally occurring anionic polymer, was used as a capping agent to protect the silver nanoparticles from agglomeration and render them biocompatible. Use of ammonia during synthesis was avoided. Our study clearly demonstrates how the concentration of the capping agent plays a major role in determining the dimensions, morphology, and stability, as well as toxicity of a silver colloidal solution. Hence, proper optimization is necessary to develop silver colloids of narrow size distribution. The samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and zeta potential measurement. MTT assay results indicated good biocompatibility of the PGA-capped silver nanoparticles. Formation of intracellular reactive oxygen species was measured spectrophotometrically using 2,7-dichlorofluorescein diacetate as a fluorescent probe, and it was shown that the PGA-capped silver nanoparticles did not induce intracellular formation of reactive oxygen species.

Abstract
A simple and green chemical method has been developed to synthesize stable bare and capped silver nanoparticles based on the reduction of silver ions by glucose and capping by poly(α,γ,L-glutamic acid) (PGA). The use of ammonia during synthesis was avoided. PGA has had a dual role in the synthesis and was used as a capping agent to make the silver nanoparticle more biocompatible and to protect the nanoparticles from agglomerating in the liquid medium. The synthesized PGA-capped silver nanoparticles in the size range 5-45 nm were stable over long periods of time, without signs of precipitation. Morphological examination has shown that the silver nanoparticles had a nearly spherical, multiply twinned structure. The effects of the reaction temperature and the reaction time during the synthesis were investigated too. The biocompatibility of the PGA-capped silver nano-particles is discussed in terms of in vitro toxicity with human intestinal Caco-2 cells. The samples were characterized by UV-Visible spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and zeta potential measurements.
