Abstract
Density functional theory calculations have been carried out to investigate 12-electron reduced alpha, beta, gamma, delta, and epsilon Keggin-like [(MoO4)Mo12O12S12(OH)12]2- polyoxothiometalates (POTMs), which show that the stability order is alpha < beta < gamma < delta < epsilon that is perfectly inverse to the well-known trend of the classical Keggin polyoxometalates. Energy decomposition analysis reveals that the enhanced stabilities of gamma, delta, and epsilon isomers originate the favorable arrangements of their Mo12O12S12(OH)12 shell, in which the edge-sharing [MoV2(mu-S)2O2] fragment plays a fundamental role in stabilizing the overall structure. Both frontier orbital analysis and Mayer indexes exhibit that a Mo-Mo single bond is formed inside the [MoV2(mu-S)2O2] fragment, which leads to the localization of the two reduced electrons. As compared with experimentally discovered cyclic [(C9H3O6)@Mo12O12S12(OH)12]3-, all Keggin POTM structures are less stable due to their disfavored cage framework and the disadvantageous host-guest interaction. However, the epsilon-type Keggin POTM that has the largest similarity to the cyclic species is possibly available in the presence of appropriate templates.

Abstract
Representative members of a new family of covalently bonded charge-transfer molecular hybrids, of general formula [(eta5-C5H5)Fe(mu,eta6:eta1-p-RC6H4NN)Mo(eta2-S2CNEt2)3] +PF6- (R: H, 5+PF6-; Me, 6+PF6-; MeO, 7+PF6-) and [(eta5-C5Me5)Fe(mu,eta6:eta1-C6H5NN)Mo(eta2-S2CNEt2)3]+PF6-, 8+PF6-, have been synthesized by reaction of the corresponding mixed-sandwich organometallic hydrazines [(eta5-C5H5)Fe(eta6-p-RC6H4NHNH2)]+PF6- (R: H, 1+PF6-; Me, 2+PF6-; MeO, 3+PF6-) and [(eta5-C5Me5)Fe(eta6-C6H5NHNH2)]+PF6-, 4+PF6-, with cis-dioxomolybdenum(VI) bis(diethyldithiocarbamato) complex, [MoO2(S2CNEt2)2], in the presence of sodium diethyldithiocarbamato trihydrate, NaSC(=S)NEt2.3H2O, in refluxing methanol. These iron-molybdenum complexes consist of organometallic and inorganic fragments linked each other through a pi-conjugated aryldiazenido bridge coordinated in eta6 and eta1 modes, respectively. These complexes were fully characterized by FT-IR, UV-visible, and 1H NMR spectroscopies and, in the case of complex 7+PF6-, by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Likewise, the electrochemical and solvatochromic properties were studied by cyclic voltammetry and UV-visible spectroscopy, respectively. The electronic spectra of these hybrids show an absorption band in the 462-489 and 447-470 nm regions in CH2Cl2 and DMSO, respectively, indicating the existence of a charge-transfer transition from the inorganic donor to the organometallic acceptor fragments through the aryldiazenido spacer. A rationalization of the properties of 5+PF6--8+PF6- is provided through DFT calculations on a simplified model of 7+PF6-. Besides the heterodinuclear complexes 5+PF6--8+PF6-, the mononuclear molybdenum diazenido derivatives, [(eta1-p-RC6H4NN)Mo(eta2-S2CNEt2)3] (R: H, 9; Me, 10; MeO, 11), resulting from the decoordination of the [(eta5-C5H5)Fe]+ moiety of complexes 5+PF6--7+PF6-, were also isolated. For comparative studies, the crystalline and molecular structure of complex 10.Et2O was also determined by X-ray diffraction analysis and its electronic structure computed.

Abstract
A detailed study is reported of the influence of protons, metal cations, and media on the redox chemistry of lacunary anions [alpha-SiW11O39]8- and [alpha-PW11O39]7- of high formal negative charge. Each anion displayed a single chemically reversible one-electron reduction process in carefully dried aprotic CH3CN solution. This process was detected at very negative potentials just prior to the solvent limit. Addition of 0.3 equiv of acid gave rise to a new reduction process at considerably less negative potentials, which is attributed to formation of the protonated species [SiW11O38(OH)]7- and [PW11O38(OH)]6-. Voltammograms derived from simulations based on a double-square scheme are in excellent agreement with experiment. Previous data reported the presence of several processes in CH3CN and appear to have been influenced by the presence of protons and/or adventitious water. Not surprisingly, protonation reactions coupled to charge transfer contribute significantly to the voltammetry of these lacunary anions in buffered aqueous media over the pH range 2-6. A multi-square-scheme mechanism allowed the essential thermodynamic and kinetic features of this system to be captured and an assessment of the relative significance of possible individual pathways. The high formal anionic charges of [SiW11O39]8- and [PW11O39]7- appear to provide highly basic reduced forms that are able to abstract protons from water to produce protonated species which are reduced at potentials more than a volt less negative than those for the processes [SiW11O39]8-/9- and [PW11O39]7-/8- found in dry aprotic media.

Abstract
The dipole polarizabilities, second-order polarizabilities, and origin of second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of trisorganotin-substituted beta-Keggin polyoxotungstate [XW9O37(SnR)3](11-n)- (X = P, Si, Ge, R = Ph; X = Si, R = PhNO2, PhCCPh) have been investigated by using time-dependent density functional response theory. This class of organic-inorganic hybrid complexes possesses a remarkably large molecular second-order NLO response, especially for [SiW9O37(SnPhCCPh)3]7- (system 5) with the static second-order polarizability (beta(vec)) computed to be 1569.66 x 10(-30) esu. Thus, these complexes have the possibility to be excellent second-order nonlinear optical materials. Analysis of the major contributions to the beta(vec) value suggests that the charge transfer from the heteropolyanion to the organic segment along the z-axis plays the key role in the NLO response of [XW9O37(SnR)3](11-n)-. The computed beta(vec) values increase as a heavy central heteroatom changes in the order Ge > Si > P. Furthermore, nitro substitution on the aryl segment and the lengthening of organostannic pi-conjugation are more important in enhancing the optical nonlinearity, especially for the latter factor. The present investigation provides important insight into the origin of the NLO properties of trisorganotin-substituted heteropolyoxotungstate.

Abstract
New Ru(II) and Os(II) derivatives of the monovacant [alpha-PW(11)O(39)](7-) anion ([PW(11)O(39){M(DMSO)(3)(H(2)O)}](5-) (M = Ru (1), Os (2)) and [PW(11)O(39){Os(eta(6)-p-cym)(H(2)O)}](5-) (3)) have been synthesized and characterized. The binding mode of the d(6)-{M(II)L(3)(H(2)O)}(2+) moieties in these compounds is similar to that in the previously described [PW(11)O(39){Ru(eta(6)-p-cym)(H(2)O)}](5-) (4) complex: bidentate, on two nonequivalent oxygen atoms of the lacuna, leading to a loss of the C(s) symmetry of the parent anion, which thus plays the role of a prochiral bidentate ligand. The density functional theory (DFT) (B3PW91) computation of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of the {ML(3)(H(2)O)}(2+) (M = Os, Ru; L(3) = fac-(DMSO)(3), eta(6)-C(6)H(6)) fragments reveals the similarities between their electrophilic properties. The origin of the regioselectivity of the grafting was investigated through a DFT (B3PW91) analysis of (i) the highest occupied molecular orbital of [alpha-PW(11)O(39)](7-) and (ii) the relative energies of the different potential regioisomers obtained by a bidentate grafting of the {ML(3)(H(2)O)}(2+) moiety onto the lacuna of [alpha-PW(11)O(39)](7-). The role of the water ligand in the stabilization of this peculiar structure was studied.

Abstract
Polyoxometalate compounds continue to be widely studied due to their relevance in various fields such as catalysis or magnetochemistry. In this article, we will focus on two topics we recently developed, the functionalization of rare earth polyoxometalates by organic ligands, which has led to compounds ranging from magnetic macromolecular complexes to a 3D open-framework system, and the functionalization of first row transition metal substituted polyoxometalates by azido ligands, which has allowed the isolation of complexes exhibiting the largest ferromagnetic exchange couplings observed to date in polyoxometalate chemistry.

Abstract
Several novel compounds with the non-linear optical chromophore 2-amino-5-nitropyridine (2A5NP) and Keggin polyoxoanions (alpha-isomers), having the general formula (2A5NP)(m)H(n)[XM12O40].xH2O, M = Mo, W, were synthesised. Compounds were obtained with X = P, n = 3, m = 3 and 4 and X = Si, n = m = 4 (x = 2-6). Thus, for each of the anions [PMo12O40]3- and [PW12O40]3- two different compounds were obtained, with the same anion and organic counterpart but with a different stoichiometric ratio. These presented different charge transfer properties and thermal stability. All compounds were characterised by spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The single crystal X-ray diffraction structure of (2A5NP)4H3[PMo12O40].2.5H2O.0.5C2H5OH showed that the water solvent molecules and the organic chromophores are assembled via infinite one-dimensional chains of hydrogen bonds with formation of open channels, which accommodate [PMo12O40]3- and ethanol solvent molecules.

Abstract
The history of aerobic catalytic oxidation mediated by a subclass of polyoxometalates, the phosphovanadomolybdates of the Keggin structure, [PV(x)Mo(12-x)O40](3+x)-, is described. In the earlier research it was shown that phosphovanadomolybdates catalyze oxydehydrogenation reactions through an electron-transfer oxidation of a substrate by the polyoxometalate that is then reoxidized by oxygen. These aerobic oxidations are selective and synthetically useful in various transformations, notably diene aromatization, phenol dimerization and alcohol oxidation. Oxygen transfer from the polyoxometalate to arenes and alkylarenes was also discussed as a homogeneous analog of a Mars-van Krevelen oxidation. "Second generation" catalysts include binary complexes of the polyoxometalate and a organometallic compound useful, for example, for methane oxidation and nanoparticles stabilized by polyoxometalates effective for aerobic alkene epoxidation.

Abstract
Two Anderson-type heteropolyanion-supported copper phenanthroline complexes, [Al(OH)6Mo6O18[Cu(phen)(H2O)2]2]1+ (1c) and [Al(OH)6Mo6O18[Cu(phen)(H2O)Cl]2]1- (1a) complement their charges in one of the title compounds [Al(OH)6Mo6O18[Cu(phen)(H2O)2]2][Al(OH)6Mo6O18[Cu(phen)(H2O)Cl]2].5H2O [1c][1a].5 H2O 1. Similar charge complementarity exists in the chromium analogue, [Cr(OH)6Mo6O18[Cu(phen)(H2O)2]2][Cr(OH)6Mo6O18[Cu(phen)(H2O)Cl]2].5 H2O [2c][2a].5 H2O 2. The chloride coordination to copper centers of 1a and 2a makes the charge difference. In both compounds, the geometries around copper centers are distorted square pyramidal and those around aluminum/chromium centers are distorted octahedral. Three lattice waters, from the formation of intermolecular O-H.....O hydrogen bonds, have been shown to self-assemble into an "acyclic water trimer" in the crystals of both 1 and 2. The title compounds have been synthesized in a simple one pot aqueous wet-synthesis consisting of aluminum/chromium chloride, sodium molybdate, copper nitrate, phenanthroline, and hydrochloric acid, and characterized by elemental analyses, EDAX, IR, diffuse reflectance, EPR, TGA, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Both compounds crystallize in the triclinic space group P. Crystal data for 1: a = 10.7618(6), b = 15.0238(8), c = 15.6648(8) angstroms, alpha = 65.4570(10), beta = 83.4420(10), gamma = 71.3230(10), V = 2182.1(2) angstroms3. Crystal data for 2: a = 10.8867(5), b = 15.2504(7), c = 15.7022(7) angstroms, alpha = 64.9850(10), beta = 83.0430(10), gamma = 71.1570(10), V = 2235.47(18) angstroms3. In the electronic reflectance spectra, compounds 1 and 2 exhibit a broad d-d band at approximately 700 nm, which is a considerable shift with respect to the value of 650-660 nm for a square-pyramidal [Cu(phen)2L] complex, indicating the coordination of [M(OH)6Mo6O18]3- POM anions (as a ligand) to the monophenanthroline copper complexes to form POM-supported copper complexes 1c, 1a, 2c, and 2a. The ESR spectrum of compound 1 shows a typical axial signal for a Cu2+ (d9) system, and that of compound 2, containing both chromium(III) and copper(II) ions, may reveal a zero-field-splitting of the central Cr3+ ion of the Anderson anion, [Cr(OH)6Mo6O18]3-, with an intense peak for the Cu2+ ion.

Abstract
The reactivity of divanadium-substituted silicotungstate, gamma-H2SiV2W10O40(4-) (I), with hydroxo compounds of alcohols, carboxylic acids, and water is reported. The reaction of the bis(mu-hydroxo) divanadium site in I with primary alcohols and formic acid smoothly proceeds to form corresponding monoesters and monoformate, respectively, and the crystal structures of the monomethyl and monoethyl esters and the monoformate of I are determined. The oxygen exchange between the hydroxo group and water proceeds easily. On the other hand, bulky compounds of 2-propanol, tert-butyl alcohol, and acetic acid hardly react with the bis(mu-hydroxo) divanadium site (equilibrium constant < 0.01) because of the steric crowding between the methyl groups and the polyoxometalate framework.

Abstract
The alkoxo-polyoxovanadium clusters [V6O7(OR)12]n+ (R = -CH3, -C2H5) are fully alkylated polyoxometalate derivatives comprising a hexavanadate core with the vanadium ions organized in an octahedral fashion, a classic isopolyoxometalate structure (Lindqvist) which as an entity is not known for vanadium. The clusters are highly redox-active compounds, displaying a large number of thermodynamically stable redox isomers of which the chemical syntheses and structural characterization of the neutral and cationic V(IV)/V(V) mixed-valence species [V(IV)(4-n)V(V)(2+n)O7(OR)12]n+ [SbCl6]n (R = -CH3, n = 0, 1; R = -C2H5, n = 0, 1, 2) are presented here. Neutral and positively charged clusters remain exceptional in the field of polyoxometalate chemistry. Results obtained from cyclic voltammetry, infrared spectroscopy, and from valence sum calculations conducted on X-ray structural data classify these clusters as class II mixed-valence compounds. Their highly symmetrical molecular structures make them particularly interesting as model compounds for the investigation of intervalence charge transfer and electron delocalization in the hexanuclear core. Furthermore, the large number of isostructural redox isomers affords a high variability in d-electron content. Accordingly, a dependency could clearly be established between the extent of electron delocalization and the V(IV)/V(V) ratio in a cluster species. A further interesting observation concerns the neutral ethoxo compound [V(IV)4V(V)2O7(OC2H5)12] (3) which exhibits a crystallographic phase transition accompanied by the conversion from a structure at 173 K with fully localized valencies to a room-temperature modification displaying complete d-electron delocalization.

Abstract
A phenanthroline ligand has been covalently modified at the 2 and 9 positions by an aminophenylhexamolybdate substituent. The 1H NMR spectrum indicated a strong electron-withdrawing effect of the hexamolybdate (Mo6O19(2-)) moiety on the phenanthroline ligand. UV-vis and cyclic voltammetry showed extended conjugation of the hybrid phenanthroline-polyoxometalate compound and the possibility of easy oxidation of the extended phenanathroline ligand. Further EPR experiments provided strong evidence for an intramolecular charge-transfer process with the formation of a phenanthroline cation radical and a reduced hexamolybdate.

Abstract
Hybrid organic/inorganic Wells-Dawson polyoxotungstates have been prepared through addition of functionalized tricholorostannanes to lacunary alpha(2)- and alpha(1)-[P(2)W(17)O(61)](10-). Coupling of amines and alcohols to polyoxotungstate platforms led to new structures in good yields. Coupling of chiral amines to the previously unknown organotin-substituted alpha(1) derivatives allowed the isolation of diastereomers, which feature in some cases split (1)H, (13)C, and (31)P NMR spectra. This is the first example of NMR observation of a single pair of diastereomers in the alpha(1)-Wells-Dawson series. It opens the way to potential resolution of those chiral polyoxotungstates.

Abstract
Reaction of [Ru(arene)Cl(2)](2) (arene = benzene, toluene, p-cymene, hexamethylbenzene) with K(7)[PW(11)O(39)].14H(2)O provided two series of organometallic derivatives of heteropolytungstates: type-1 and type-2 complexes of general formulas [PW(11)O(39){Ru(arene)(H(2)O)}](5-) and [{PW(11)O(39){Ru(arene)}}(2){WO(2)}](8-), respectively. All compounds were characterized by infrared and multinuclear NMR ((1)H, (31)P, (183)W) spectroscopies. The crystal structures of Na(4)K(4)[{PW(11)O(39){Ru(benzene)}}(2){WO(2)}].6H(2)O (NaK-2a.6H(2)O), K(7)H[{PW(11)O(39){Ru(toluene)}}(2){WO(2)}].4H(2)O (K-2b.4H(2)O), and Cs(3)K(2)[PW(11)O(39){Ru(p-cymene)(H(2)O)}].4H(2)O (CsK-1c.4H(2)O) were obtained and revealed that the {Ru(arene)} fragment is supported on the oxometallic framework. Photochemical reactivity of [PW(11)O(39){Ru(arene)(H(2)O)}](5-) (arene = toluene, p-cymene) in the presence of various ligands L (L = H(2)O, dimethyl sulfoxide, tetramethylene sulfoxide, and diphenyl sulfoxide) was investigated, and led to the formation of [PW(11)O(39){Ru(L)}](5-), in which the ruthenium is incorporated into the lacunary [PW(11)O(39)](7-) anion.
