Abstract
The BN analogue of ortho-benzyne, 1,2-azaborine, is shown to bind carbon monoxide and a xenon atom under matrix isolation conditions, demonstrating its strongly Lewis acidic superelectrophilic nature. The Lewis acid-base complexes involving CO and Xe can be cleaved photochemically and reformed by mildly annealing the matrices. The interaction energy of 1,2-azaborine with Xe is 3 kcal mol-1 according to quantum chemical computations, and is similar to that of the superelectrophilic carbene difluorovinylidene.

Abstract
1-Boraphenalenes have been synthesized by reaction of BBr3 with 1-(aryl-ethynyl)naphthalenes, 1-ethynylnaphthalene, and 1-(pent-1-yn-1-yl)naphthalene and they can be selectively functionalized at boron or carbon to form bench-stable products. All of these 1-boraphenalenes have LUMOs localized on the planar C12 B core that are closely comparable in character to isoelectronic phenalenyl cations. In contrast to the comparable LUMOs, the aromatic stabilization of the C5 B ring in 1-boraphenalenes is dramatically lower than the C6 rings in phenalenyl cations. This is due to the occupied orbitals of π symmetry being less delocalised in the 1-boraphenalenes.

Abstract
The photochemistry of 1,2-dihydro-1,2-azaborinine derivatives was studied under matrix isolation conditions and in solution. Photoisomerization occurs exclusively to the Dewar valence isomers upon irradiation with UV light (>280 nm) with high quantum yield (46 %). Further photolysis with UV light (254 nm) results in the formation of cyclobutadiene and an iminoborane derivative. The thermal electrocyclic ring-opening reaction of the Dewar valence isomer back to the 1,2-dihydro-1-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-2-mesityl-1,2-azaborinine has an activation barrier of (27.0±1.2) kcal mol-1 . In the presence of the Wilkinson catalyst, the ring opening occurs rapidly and exothermically (ΔH=(-48±1) kcal mol-1 ) at room temperature.

Abstract
Electronic and steric factors have been investigated in the thermal ring expansion of boroles with organic azides, a reaction that provides access to highly arylated 1,2-azaborinines, BN analogues of benzene. Reactions of a variety of boroles and organic azides demonstrate that the synthetic method is quite general in furnishing 1,2-azaborinines, but the respective reaction rates reveal a strong dependence on the substituents on the two reactants. The products have been characterized by UV/Vis, electrochemical, NMR, and X-ray diffraction methods, clarifying their constitutions and highlighting substituent effects on the electronic structure of the 1,2-azaborinines. Furthermore, analysis of several possible mechanistic pathways for 1,2-azaborinine formation, as studied by DFT, revealed that a two-step mechanism involving azide-borole adduct formation and nitrene insertion is favored.

Abstract
The first examples of biologically active monocyclic 1,2-azaborines have been synthesized and demonstrated to exhibit not only improved in vitro aqueous solubility in comparison with their corresponding carbonaceous analogues, but in the context of a CDK2 inhibitor, also improved biological activity and better in vivo oral bioavailability. This proof-of-concept study establishes the viability of monocyclic 1,2-azaborines as a novel pharmacophore with distinct pharmacological profiles that can help address challenges associated with solubility in drug development research.

Abstract
The BN-doped organic analogues are interesting as aliphatic amineboranes for hydrogen storage, precursors for aromatic borazines and adsorbent cage azaboranes. However, BN-doped aliphatic polyenes remained undeveloped. Herein, we perform theoretical calculations on two mono BN-doped aliphatic lower polyenes, 1,3-butadiene and 1,3,5-hexatriene. A general rule is proposed, i.e., isomers with terminal nitrogen and directly BN-connected, N-B(R), in particular, are of significant thermodynamic stability as compared with their inverse analogues (where boron is at the terminal position). The N-B(R) type isomers are found to be the most stable ones in both polyenes. Isomers with terminal B and N are of intermediate stability. Highly destabilized isomers are those with one terminal methylene group and one terminal heteroatom in the butadiene series, and two terminal methylene groups in the hexatriene series. Rules established here may lead researchers to synthesize isomers with particular thermodynamic stability.

Abstract
The synthesis of O-doped polyaromatic hydro- carbons in which two polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon sub units are bridged through one or two O atoms has been achieved. This includes high-yield ring-closure key steps that, depending on the reaction conditions, result in the formation of furanyl or pyranopyranyl linkages through intramolecular C-O bond formation. Comprehensive photophysical measurements in solution showed that these compounds have exceptionally high emission yields and tunable absorption properties throughout the UV/Vis spectral region. Electrochemical investigations showed that in all cases O annulation increases the electron-donor capabilities by raising the HOMO energy level, whereas the LUMO energy level is less affected. Moreover, third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) measurements on solutions or thin films containing the dyes showed very good values of the second hyperpolarizability. Importantly, poly(methyl methacrylate) films containing the pyranopyranyl derivatives exhibited weak linear absorption and NLO absorption compared to the nonlinearity and NLO refraction, respectively, and thus revealed them to be exceptional organic materials for photonic devices.

Abstract
Four members of a new class of cycloborylated hexa-, octa-, and deca-helicenes (1 a-d) have been prepared in enantiopure form, along with two cycloplatinated deca-helicenes (1 d', 1 d1 ), further extending the family of cycloplatinated hexa- and octa-helicenes reported previously. The azabora[n]helicenes display intense electronic circular dichroism and large optical rotations; the dependence of the optical activity on the size of the helix (n=6, 8, 10) and the number of boron atoms (1 or 2) has been examined in detail both experimentally and theoretically. The photophysical properties (nonpolarized and circularly polarized luminescence) of these new fluorescent organic helicenes have been measured and compared with the corresponding organometallic phosphorescent cycloplatinated derivatives (1 a1 -d1 ).

Abstract
A simple and general method for the synthesis of a wide range of monocyclic 1,4-azaborines, including the first examples containing B heteroatoms is described. Post-heterocycle-formation olefin isomerization was employed as a key strategy. This new synthetic method provides fundamental insight into the resonance stabilization and photophysical properties of 1,4-azaborines.

Abstract
The regioselective syntheses of 1,2-azaborinines is achieved using an unsymmetrical iminoborane through both catalytic and stepwise modular routes. The 1,2-azaborinine ring can be selectively functionalized in the 4- and/or 6-position through control of the stepwise reaction sequence, allowing access to vinyl-functionalized and redox-active, luminescent, donor-functionalized 1,2-azaborinines. The electrochemistry and photochemistry of a tetraarylamine-substituted 1,2-azaborinine are studied. Cyclic voltammetry of this compound, relative to a non-B,N-substituted reference molecule, showed an additional oxidation wave assigned to the oxidation of the azaborinine ring, while emission spectroscopy indicated that the azaborinine was significantly more fluorescent than the reference.

Abstract
Despite the great potential of both π-conjugated organoboron polymers and BN-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in organic optoelectronics, our knowledge of conjugated polymers with B-N bonds in their main chain is currently scarce. Herein, the first examples of a new class of organic-inorganic hybrid polymers are presented, which consist of alternating NBN and para-phenylene units. Polycondensation with B-N bond formation provides facile access to soluble materials under mild conditions. The photophysical data for the polymer and molecular model systems of different chain lengths reveal a low extent of π-conjugation across the NBN units, which is supported by DFT calculations. The applicability of the new polymers as macromolecular polyligands is demonstrated by a cross-linking reaction with Zr(IV) .

Abstract
The regioregular synthesis of the first azaborine oligomers and a corresponding conjugated polymer was accomplished by Suzuki-Miyaura coupling methods. An almost perfectly coplanar syn arrangement of the heterocycles was deduced from an X-ray crystal structure of the dimer, which also suggested that NH⋅⋅⋅π interactions play an important role. Computational studies further supported these experimental observations and indicated that the electronic structure of the longer azaborine oligomers and polymer resembles that of poly(cyclohexadiene) more than poly(p-phenylene). A comparison of the absorption and emission properties of the polymer with those of the oligomers revealed dramatic bathochromic shifts upon chain elongation, thus suggesting highly effective extension of conjugation.

Abstract
Mild thermolysis of Lewis base stabilized phosphinoborane monomers R(1)R(2)P-BH2⋅NMe3 (R(1),R(2)=H, Ph, or tBu/H) at room temperature to 100 °C provides a convenient new route to oligo- and polyphosphinoboranes [R(1)R(2)P-BH2]n. The polymerization appears to proceed via the addition/head-to-tail polymerization of short-lived free phosphinoborane monomers, R(1)R(2)P-BH2. This method offers access to high molar mass materials, as exemplified by poly(tert-butylphosphinoborane), that are currently inaccessible using other routes (e.g. catalytic dehydrocoupling).

Abstract
Access to novel imine-substituted 1,2-azaborinines, as well as highly arylated boracyclohexa-3,5-dienes has been developed by ring expansion of boroles with diazoalkanes with varying degrees of steric bulk. The formation of a diazoalkane intermediate is also discussed for the reaction of ortho-brominated p-tolyl-azide with 1,2,3,4,5-pentaphenylborole. Structural details as well as UV/Vis spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric data are provided. These boron-containing heterocycles have the potential to serve as building blocks for boron-containing materials.

Abstract
New BN-heterocyclic compounds have been found to undergo double arene photoelimination, forming rare yellow fluorescent BN-pyrenes that contain two BN units. Most significant is the discovery that the double arene elimination can also be driven by excitons generated electrically within electroluminescent (EL) devices, enabling the in situ solid-state conversion of BN-heterocycles to BN-pyrenes and the use of BN-pyrenes as emitters for EL devices. The in situ exciton-driven elimination (EDE) phenomenon has also been observed for other BN-heterocycles.
