Abstract
In modern times, seaweeds have become widely involved in several biotechnological applications due to the variety of their constituent bioactive compounds. The consumption of seaweeds dates to ancient times; however, only from the last few decades of research can we explain the mechanisms of action and the potential of seaweed-derived bioactive compounds, which has led to their involvement in food, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries. Macroalgae-derived bioactive compounds are of great importance as their properties enable them to be ideal candidates for the production of sustainable “green” packaging. Diverse studies demonstrate that seaweed polysaccharides (e.g., alginates and carrageenans) not only provide health benefits, but also contribute to the production of biopolymeric film and biodegradable packaging. The dispersion of plastics and microplastics in the oceans provoke serious environmental issues that influence ecosystems and aquatic organisms. Thus, the sustainable use of seaweed-derived biopolymers is now crucial to replace plasticizers with biodegradable materials, and thus preserve the environment. The present review aims to provide an overview on the potential of seaweeds in the production of bioplastics which might be involved in food or pharmaceutical packaging.

Abstract
Due to their complete non-biodegradability, current food packages have resulted in major environmental issues. Today’s smart consumer is looking for alternatives that are environmentally friendly, durable, recyclable, and naturally rather than synthetically derived. It is a well-established fact that complete replacement with environmentally friendly packaging materials is unattainable, and bio-based plastics should be the future of the food packaging industry. Natural biopolymers and nanotechnological interventions allow the creation of new, high-performance, light-weight, and environmentally friendly composite materials, which can replace non-biodegradable plastic packaging materials. This review summarizes the recent advancements in smart biogenic packaging, focusing on the shift from conventional to natural packaging, properties of various biogenic packaging materials, and the amalgamation of technologies, such as nanotechnology and encapsulation; to develop active and intelligent biogenic systems, such as the use of biosensors in food packaging. Lastly, challenges and opportunities in biogenic packaging are described, for their application in sustainable food packing systems.

Abstract
The era for eco-friendly polymers was ushered by the marine plastic menace and with the discovery of emerging pollutants such as micro-, nano-plastics, and plastic leachates from fossil fuel-based polymers. This review investigates algae-derived natural, carbon neutral polysaccharides and polyesters, their structure, biosynthetic mechanisms, biopolymers and biocomposites production process, followed by biodegradability of the polymers. The review proposes acceleration of research in this promising area to address the need for eco-friendly polymers and to increase the cost-effectiveness of algal biorefineries by coupling biofuel, high-value products, and biopolymer production using waste and wastewater-grown algal biomass. Such a strategy improves overall sustainability by lowering costs and carbon emissions in algal biorefineries, eventually contributing towards the much touted circular, net-zero carbon future economies. Finally, this review analyses the evolution of citation networks, which in turn highlight the emergence of a new frontier of sustainable polymers from algae.

Abstract
Hydrocolloids are a class of food additives with broad applications in the food industry to develop structure in food ingredients. Hydrocolloids can be synthetic, plant-based, or animal-based. Increasing consumer awareness has led to the use of natural food ingredients derived from natural sources, making algae-derived hydrocolloids more appealing nowadays. Algae-derived hydrocolloids such as carrageenan, agar, and alginate are widely used in the food industry as thickening, gelling, and emulsifying agents. Carrageenans are sulfated polysaccharides with diverse structural specificities. The safety of carrageenan use in the food industry has been widely debated recently due to the reported pro-inflammatory activities of carrageenan and the probable digestion of carrageenan by the gut microbiota to generate pro-inflammatory oligosaccharides. In contrast, both agar and alginate are primarily nontoxic, and generally no dispute regarding the use of the same in food ingredients. This review provides an overview of the algae industry, the food additives, the algae-derived hydrocolloids, the applications of algae-derived hydrocolloids in food industries, health-related studies, and other sectors, along with future perspectives. Even though differences of opinion exist in the use of carrageenan, it is continued to be used by the food industry and will be used until suitable alternatives are available. In summary, algal hydrocolloids are 'label-friendly' and considered a safe option against synthetic additives.

Abstract
Marine resources have tremendous potential for developing high-value biomaterials. The last decade has seen an increasing number of biomaterials that originate from marine organisms. This field is rapidly evolving. Marine biomaterials experience several periods of discovery and development ranging from coralline bone graft to polysaccharide-based biomaterials. The latter are represented by chitin and chitosan, marine-derived collagen, and composites of different organisms of marine origin. The diversity of marine natural products, their properties and applications are discussed thoroughly in the present review. These materials are easily available and possess excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability and potent bioactive characteristics. Important applications of marine biomaterials include medical applications, antimicrobial agents, drug delivery agents, anticoagulants, rehabilitation of diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, bone diseases and diabetes, as well as comestible, cosmetic and industrial applications.

Abstract
In the current study, film based on semi-refined ι-carrageenan/cassava starch (SRiC/CS) incorporated with SiO2-ZnO nanoparticles was fabricated and characterized to deal with serious environmental problems resulting from plastic packaging materials. This study aimed to evaluate film properties with the variation of SRiC/CS proportions of bionanocomposite films for application to minced chicken meat packaging. Increasing CS portion contributed to increased transparency, reduced surface roughness, and decreased mechanical properties of films. The variable significantly (p < 0.05) increased the water vapor permeability (WVP) and reduced the water solubility of films. The incorporation of the nanoparticles significantly (p < 0.05) increased UV screening, decreased WVP, and enhanced the antimicrobial activity of films. Furthermore, the substitution of 0.5 wt% (weight percentage) CS provided the best film characteristics. Based on the color and the total volatile base nitrogen (TVBN) results, SRiC film incorporated with the nanoparticles preserved minced chicken quality up to six days. Thus, the developed films are desirable for biodegradable food packaging.

Abstract
Food packaging with efficient antibacterial ability is highly desirable and challenging in facing the crisis of microbial contamination. However, most present packaging is based on metal-based antibacterial agents and requires a time-consuming antibacterial process. Here, the unique packaging (CC/BB films) featuring aggregation-induced emission behavior and photodynamic inactivation activity is prepared by dispersing self-assembled berberine-baicalin nanoparticles (BB NPs) into a mixed matrix of sodium carboxymethylcellulose-carrageenan (CC). The superiority of this design is that this packaging film can utilize sunlight to generate reactive oxygen species, thus eradicating more than 99% of E. coli and S. aureus within 60 min. Also, this film can release BB NPs to inactivate bacteria under all weather conditions. Surprisingly, the CC/BB nanocomposite film presented excellent mechanical performances (29.80 MPa and 38.65%), hydrophobicity (117.8°), and thermostability. The nanocomposite film is validated to be biocompatible and effective in protecting chicken samples, so this work will provide novel insights to explore safe and efficient antibacterial food packaging.

Abstract
Ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) has become the main method for the detection and analysis of food additives because of its good separation, high selectivity, and high sensitivity. The aim of this study was to establish an UHPLC-MS/MS method that can quickly and accurately measure the content of carrageenan in livestock and poultry meat. Chromatographic separation was performed on an ACQUITY UPLC BEH HILIC C18 column (2.1 mm × 50 mm, 1.7 μm) using a gradient elution with methanol and 0.1% (v/v) formic acid in water as a mobile phase. The quantitative analysis was executed using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer in which electrospray ionization, multiple reaction monitoring, and negative mode were operated. The retention time was about 1.3 min for carrageenan. The carrageenan content showed a good linear relationship from 0.05 to 1.00 g/kg. The limit of detection (LOD) was 0.06 g/kg, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.18 g/kg. The standards were spiked at three levels (low, medium, and high) and were analyzed in six replicates. The recovery values of carrageenan in pork, beef, lamb, chicken, and duck meat were 82.06-111.55%, 85.43-112.50%, 89.55-116.00%, 83.80-102.15%, and 82.41-110.90%, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were all lower than 7.51%. The developed method shows a high recovery rate and good precision and can be used for the rapid detection of carrageenan in livestock and poultry meat.

Abstract
In this work, the physicochemical properties of maleic anhydride (MAH)-modified κ-carrageenan (κCar) (MC) were characterized and compared with those of native κ-carrageenan (NC). The Fourier transform infrared spectrum of MC exhibited that κCar was successfully modified. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the thermal stability of MC was decreased. When the degree of substitution was 0.032, MC exhibited a low gel strength (759 g/cm2), gelling temperature (33.3 °C), and dehydration rate (60.3%). Given the excellent film-forming ability of κCar, MC films were then prepared and were found to have better mechanical and barrier properties (UV and water) than NC films. With regard to optical properties, MC films could completely absorb UV light in the range of 200–236 nm. The water contact angle of MC films was higher than that of NC films. Moreover, the elongation at break increased from 26.9% to 163%. These physicochemical property changes imply that MC can be employed in polysaccharide-based films.

Abstract
The chemical modification of porphyran hydrocolloid is attempted, with the objective of enhancing its antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Sulfated galactan porphyran is obtained from commercial samples of the red algae Porphyra dioica using Soxhlet extraction with water at 100 °C and precipitation with isopropyl alcohol. The extracted porphyran is then treated with modified L-tyrosines in aqueous medium in the presence of NaOH, at ca. 70 °C. The modified tyrosines L1 and L2 are prepared through a Mannich reaction with either thymol or 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, respectively. While the reaction with 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol yields the expected tyrosine derivative, a mixture of products is obtained with thymol. The resulting polysaccharides are structurally characterized and the respective antioxidant and antimicrobial activities are determined. Porphyran treated with the N-(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butyl-benzyl)-L-tyrosine derivative, POR-L2, presents a noticeable superior radical scavenging and antioxidant activity compared to native porphyran, POR. Furthermore, it exhibited some antimicrobial activity against S. aureus. The surface morphology of films prepared by casting with native and modified porphyrans is studied by SEM/EDS. Both POR and POR-L2 present potential applicability in the production of films and washable coatings for food packaging with improved protecting characteristics.

Abstract
Among the various natural polymers, polysaccharides are one of the oldest biopolymers present on the Earth. They play a very crucial role in the survival of both animals and plants. Due to the presence of hydroxyl functional groups in most of the polysaccharides, it is easy to prepare their chemical derivatives. Several polysaccharide derivatives are widely used in a number of industrial applications. The polysaccharides such as cellulose, starch, chitosan, etc., have several applications but due to some distinguished characteristic properties, seaweed polysaccharides are preferred in a number of applications. This review covers published literature on the seaweed polysaccharides, their origin, and extraction from seaweeds, application, and chemical modification. Derivatization of the polysaccharides to impart new functionalities by chemical modification such as esterification, amidation, amination, C-N bond formation, sulphation, acetylation, phosphorylation, and graft copolymerization is discussed. The suitability of extraction of seaweed polysaccharides such as agar, carrageenan, and alginate using ionic solvent systems from a sustainability point of view and future prospects for efficient extraction and functionalization of seaweed polysaccharides is also included in this review article.

Abstract
The quality and safety of chicken meat are prone to deteriorate due to bacteria reproduction and oxidation reaction. In this study, the antimicrobial and antioxidant effects of KGM-KC coatings incorporated camellia oil were evaluated to extend the shelf-life of chicken meat. The result showed that the KGM/KC-CO coating significantly (P < 0.05) decreased weight loss, pH, thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS), total volatile nitrogen (TVN) and microbial counts when compared to uncoated samples. The obtained results revealed that KGM/KC-based coating incorporated with CO significantly extended the shelf-life of chicken meat by restraining the oxidation of lipid and protein, and retarding the microbial growth. The sensory evaluation showed that the addition of CO did not affect the odor of chicken meat, maintained the overall acceptability of coated samples. The shelf-life of chicken meat was extended up to 10 days using KGM/KC-based coating containing 3.5% CO at refrigeration (4 °C) compared to control samples. These results indicated CO could be used as an active agent to be dispersed in KGM/KC matrix by emulsification method, and the prepared emulsion coating had positive effects on extending the shelf-life of chicken meat.

Abstract
Chitosan is one of the most abundant natural polymer worldwide, and due to its inherent characteristics, its use in industrial processes has been extensively explored. Because it is biodegradable, biocompatible, non-toxic, hydrophilic, cheap, and has good physical-chemical stability, it is seen as an excellent alternative for the replacement of synthetic materials in the search for more sustainable production methodologies. Thus being, a possible biotechnological application of Chitosan is as a direct support for enzyme immobilization. However, its applicability is quite specific, and to overcome this issue, alternative pretreatments are required, such as chemical and physical modifications to its structure, enabling its use in a wider array of applications. This review aims to present the topic in detail, by exploring and discussing methods of employment of Chitosan in enzymatic immobilization processes with various enzymes, presenting its advantages and disadvantages, as well as listing possible chemical modifications and combinations with other compounds for formulating an ideal support for this purpose. First, we will present Chitosan emphasizing its characteristics that allow its use as enzyme support. Furthermore, we will discuss possible physicochemical modifications that can be made to Chitosan, mentioning the improvements obtained in each process. These discussions will enable a comprehensive comparison between, and an informed choice of, the best technologies concerning enzyme immobilization and the application conditions of the biocatalyst.

Abstract
Carrageenan is a polysaccharide that is widely used in the food industry. Due to its water holding capacity, there is a higher risk of adulteration for economic reasons related to it. A verifiable method for detecting carrageenan is still missing in the food inspection sector. The detection of carrageenan in meat products is not well described. Our study describes lectin histochemistry as a novel approach for carrageenan detection. Within this study, the detection of carrageenan in meat products by lectin histochemistry is validated. Lectins of Arachis hypogaea (PNA) and Bandeiraea simlicifolia (BSA), specific for galactose units of carrageenan, were used. The samples included model meat products (ground chicken-meat products) and meat products from retail markets (chicken and pork hams, sausages, salami, and dried sausages). The limit of determination (LoD) of this method was set at 0.01 g kg-1. The method sensitivity for lectin PNA reached 1, and, for lectin BSA, it reached 0.96. Method specificity for lectin PNA was 1, and, for lectin BSA, it was 1.33. Cross-reactivity with other hydrocolloids tested was not confirmed. The results confirm that lectin histochemistry is suitable for detecting carrageenan in meat products.

Abstract
The edible films composed ofcarboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), glycerol, mucilage from Chinese yam (DOM)and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), were prepared by a casting method. To evaluate the applicability for food packaging, prepared films were characterised morphological, physical, rheological, mechanical and barrier properties, performed FT-IR, thermal analysis, and finally investigated the antibacterial activity and acute oral toxicity of films. The surface of films presented irregular arrangement with nanoparticles combined in the networks, suggesting the best "CMC to DOM weight ratio" of approximately 1:1 could provide a smooth surface. The films with 2.0 g ZnO-NPs presented antibacterial effects against both Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria. With the increase of DOM, the antibacterial rate dropped at 400 and 450 μL/mL. The film-forming solutions with higher ZnO-NPs content display shear-thinning properties and liquid-like behaviour. The edible films have a great potential to be used in application in food packaging.

Abstract
Since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, it has spread rapidly worldwide and poses a great threat to public health. This is the third serious coronavirus outbreak in <20 years, following SARS in 2002-2003 and MERS in 2012. So far, there are almost no specific clinically effective drugs and vaccines available for COVID-19. Polysaccharides with good safety, immune regulation and antiviral activity have broad application prospects in anti-virus, especially in anti-coronavirus applications. Here, we reviewed the antiviral mechanisms of some polysaccharides, such as glycosaminoglycans, marine polysaccharides, traditional Chinese medicine polysaccharides, and their application progress in anti-coronavirus. In particular, the application prospects of polysaccharide-based vaccine adjuvants, nanomaterials and drug delivery systems in the fight against novel coronavirus were also analyzed and summarized. Additionally, we speculate the possible mechanisms of polysaccharides anti-SARS-CoV-2, and propose the strategy of loading S or N protein from coronavirus onto polysaccharide capped gold nanoparticles vaccine for COVID-19 treatment. This review may provide a new approach for the development of COVID-19 therapeutic agents and vaccines.

In recent years, considerable attention has been focused on carrageenan-based biomaterials due to their multifunctional qualities, including biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, in addition to bioactive attributes, such as their antiviral, antibacterial, antihyperlipidemic, anticoagulant, antioxidant, antitumor, and immunomodulating properties. They have been applied in pharmaceutical formulations as both their bioactive and physicochemical properties make them suitable biomaterials for drug delivery, and recently for the development of tissue engineering. This article provides a review of recent research on the various types of carrageenan-based biomedical and pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
With reference to the organization of the human brain nervous system, a hardware-based approach that builds massively parallel neuromorphic circuits is of great significance to neuromorphic computing. The Bienenstock-Cooper-Munro (BCM) learning rule, which describes that the synaptic weight modulation exhibits frequency-dependent and tunable frequency threshold characteristics, is more compatible with the working principle of neuromorphic computing systems than spike-timing-dependent plasticity. Therefore, it is interesting to simulate the BCM learning rule on solid-state synaptic devices. Here, we have prepared λ-carrageenan (λ-car) electrolyte-gated oxide synaptic transistors, which exhibit good transistor performances, including a low subthreshold swing of 125 mV/dec, an on/off ratio larger than 106, and a mobility of 9.5 cm2 V-1 s-1. By modulating the initial channel current and spike frequency, the simulation of the BCM rule was successfully realized. The competitive relationship between the drift of protons under an electric field and the spontaneous diffusion of protons can explain this mechanism. The proposed λ-car-gated synaptic transistor has a great significance to neuromorphic computing.

Abstract
Polysaccharides a large chain of simple sugars covalently linked by glycosidic bonds which are obtained from living organisms and microbes commercially used in food and pharmaceutical industries. Marine macroalgae or seaweed is an unexploited natural source of polysaccharides, which contains many variant phytonutrients whose cells are enriched with sulfated polysaccharides which have been progressively read these days for their potential value in food and pharmaceutical applications. This review aims the exploration of these polysaccharides in food applications, with a focus on its types and biological properties in the view of food application.

Abstract
κ-Carrageenase cleaves the β-(1-4) linkages of κ-carrageenan into κ-carrageenan oligosaccharides (κ-COS), which exhibit various biological activities. In this study, a glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 16 κ-carrageenase gene, cgkA, was cloned from the marine bacterium Vibrio sp. SY01 and secretory expressed in a food-grade host, Yarrowia lipolytica. The specific activity of the purified CgkA was 12.5 U/mg. Determination of biochemical properties showed that CgkA was a thermo-tolerant enzyme, and 59.9% of the initial enzyme activity was recovered by immediately placing the sample at 20 °C for 30 min after enzymatic inactivation by boiling for 5 min. The recombinant CgkA was an endo-type enzyme, the main enzymatic product was κ-carradiaose (accounting for 87.6% of total products), and κ-carratetraose was the minimum substrate. Additionally, in vitro and in vivo analyses indicated that enzymatic κ-carradiaose possesses anti-oxidant activity. These features make CgkA as a promising candidate for biotechnological applications in the production of anti-oxidant κ-COS.

Abstract
Agar is a biopolymer extracted from certain red algae. The continuous and transparent film made from agar gum is becoming a common and renewable alternative for plastic-based food packaging materials. However, plain agar film suffers from brittleness, high moisture permeability, and poor thermal stability. Considerable researches have been devoted to improving the properties of agar films to extend their applications. These include reinforcements by nanomaterials, blending with other biopolymers, and incorporating plasticizers, hydrophobic components, or antimicrobial agents into their structure. This article comprehensively reviews the functional properties and defects of edible films made from agar gum. Also, it describes various strategies and components used to make an agar film with desirable properties. Moreover, the applications of agar-based edible films with improved functionality for food packaging are discussed.

Abstract
Carrageenans obtained from seaweeds can be processed into films for a range of applications including food packaging. The level of carrageenan refinement during extraction can influence the key properties, with semi-refined carrageenan (SRC) containing more impurities than the more refined carrageenan (RC). Further refinement steps, however, result in higher costs associated with the production of RC. In order to obtain a lower cost and more ecofriendly, bio-based material for food packaging applications, SRC was used in this investigation to produce a thin film reinforced with nanocellulose fibrils (NCF). Films derived from RC containing NCF were also investigated with water sensitivity and physico-mechanical and thermal properties among the properties tested. Levels of NCF were varied from 1% to 7% (w/w), and in general, the NCF reinforcement improved the overall properties of both the SRC and RC films, including the water sensitivity and moisture barrier. However, NCF inclusion in SRC film was less effective with regard to the mechanical and thermal properties compared with NCF inclusion in RC film. The enhancement in properties was attributed to the greater cohesiveness of the reinforced polymer structure and the crystalline regions formed in the structures of SRC and RC films by NCF incorporation.

Abstract
In this study, the reinforced ZnONPs/ rosemary essential oil-incorporated zein nanofibers with κ-carrageenan (Z/KC/ZnONPs/RE) were fabricated using the electrospinning technique for application in food packaging. The SEM images of Z/KC/ZnONPs/RE nanofiber displayed bead-free homogeneous morphology that its average fiber diameter was 672 ± 240 nm. The formation of new hydrogen bonds by addition of κ-carrageenan and active agents was approved by FT-IR and DSC structural conformations. The Z/KC/ZnONPs/RE nanofiber exhibited satisfactory thermal and mechanical properties, as well as high surface hydrophobicity. In addition, the Z/KC/ZnONPs/RE sample showed inhibition activity against S. aureus (18.5 ± 1.9 mm) and E. coli (14.7 ± 1.5 mm) bacteria. The DPPH scavenging activity of Z/KC/ZnONPs/RE nanofiber was 54.5 ± 3.6 %. Additionally, the fabricated nanofibers showed no cell cytotoxicity, indicating their good biocompatibility. Thus, we believe that the fabricated Z/KC/ZnONPs/RE electrospun nanofiber is a potential candidate for using as an active layer in food packaging system.
